(American author and Professor of Biochemistry \u2013 4 October 1919 to 6 April 1992)<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>Two years ago (29\/11\/2010),<\/em> Mr Subramaniam Sivanayagam<\/a><\/span> known as \u2018Iyah\u2019, editor of \u201cHot Spring\u201d<\/em>, \u201cTamil <\/em>Nation\u201d<\/em> and \u201cSaturday Review\u201d<\/em>,<\/em><\/strong> passed away.<\/p>\n

Subramaniam Sivanayagam<\/p><\/div>\n

Mr Sivanayagam worked for the \u2018Ceylon Daily News\u2019<\/em>, the \u2018Daily Mirror\u2019<\/em>,<\/em><\/strong> J. Walter Thompson and the Ceylon Tourist Board. Soon after the \u2018Saturday Review\u201d was banned by the government Mr. Sivanayagam went to India and worked there for the \u201cTamil Information Centre\u201d for a few years. Then along with his friends, he started an English fortnightly newspaper, \u201cTamil Nation\u201d<\/em>.<\/em><\/strong> While he was working for Tamil Nation, he was arrested by the Indian authorities under TADA and detained for a few years in India.<\/p>\n

As soon as he was released from prison, he came to France, sought political asylum and lived in Paris for some years. While in Paris, he started publishing the monthly magazine \u201cHot Spring\u201d <\/em>and while in France he underwent a heart operation. Due to his friends\u2019 encouragement Mr Sivanayaragam move to United Kingdom and continued to publish the popular \u201cHot Spring\u201d magazine.<\/p>\n

Mr Sivanayaragam published two books, \u201cThe Pen and the Gun\u201d & \u201cSri Lanka \u2013 Witness to History\u201d \u2013 A journalist\u2019s Memoirs 1930 \u2013 2004 <\/em>which contain his popular articles and writings, expressing his experiences as a journalist and the effects of politics in Sri Lanka. In 1987 he published \u201cSri Lanka : 10 years of Jayewardene Rule\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

As his illness worsened, he decided to live with his family and he returned to Colombo in 2005. He passed away on 29 November 2010, leaving his wife, two daughters, grandchildren and his son-in-law.<\/p>\n

This courageous popular journalist is remembered for his life\u2019s work, his contribution to his people.<\/p>\n

On the 2nd<\/sup> death anniversary of Mr Sivanayagam, we, the Tamil Centre for Human Rights \u2013 TCHR<\/em>,<\/em><\/strong> along with many other solidarity organisations renew our expressions of sympathy to his wife, daughters and other family members.<\/p>\n

For Iyah (Mr) Sivanayagam<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Lovely soul has passed today<\/p>\n

from Earth to the next place.<\/p>\n

Full of humour, light an<\/p>\n

Mischievous love<\/p>\n

of life, of laughter \u2013 of people in<\/p>\n

the broadest sense \u2013 humanity \u2013<\/p>\n

and His people.<\/p>\n

Tireless journalist \u2013 writer of truth<\/p>\n

I feel limp with sorrow<\/p>\n

like a leaf without water<\/p>\n

but salt water flows from my eyes<\/p>\n

in a wellspring of grief.<\/p>\n

This history \u2013 this path of an<\/p>\n

oppressed people \u2013 trod by<\/p>\n

many \u2013 drew all of us together<\/p>\n

attempting to speak out and<\/p>\n

expose the injustice.<\/p>\n

What a herculean task<\/p>\n

He did<\/p>\n

Over the decades.<\/p>\n

History will recognise his feat.<\/p>\n

The Sunday Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Sunday Leader 20 February 2005 – <\/strong>Subramaniam Sivanayagam, born in Jaffna, Ceylon in 1930 during British colonial rule in Jaffna had his secondary education at Kokuvil Hindu College and Jaffna College, Vaddukoddai. In Colombo, he had worked on the editorial staff of the Ceylon Daily News and the Ceylon Daily Mirror. He was founder editor of the Jaffna based Saturday Review. While in India in 1986, he edited the fortnightly Tamil Nation. In Paris in 1994 he edited the newly launched monthly journal, Hot Spring which later shifted base to London (Excerpt)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
