On that basis this prevents the UNDP funds for being utilised for this meeting. However, it is reported that the judges will proceed with the meeting for one day with their own personal contributions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_65384\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/the-government-fears-gatherings-of-judges-and-prevents-the-funds\/vasudeva-nanayakkara\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-65384\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65384\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65384\" title=\"Vasudeva-Nanayakkara\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Vasudeva-Nanayakkara.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vasudeva Nanayakkara<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Judicial Service Association (JSA), the association of the judges of the original court, \u00a0had organised the Annual Judges Conference, sponsored by the UNDP &#8211; under the \u00a0Equal Access to Justice Programme, which is scheduled for 21 and 22nd of December 2012. This programme comes under the Ministry of \u00a0Languages and Social Intrigration <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Vasudeva+Nanayakkara&amp;x=11&amp;y=9\">Vasudeva Nanayakkara<\/a><\/span>. The Secretary to the Ministry Malkanthi Wickramasinghe had informed the JSA on 18th December that the Minister does not wish to sponsor this conference, notwithstanding the MOU singed and an advance \u00a0being paid for the venue of the Conference. Thus the sponsorship of UNDP has been withdrawn officially due to arbitrary and politically motivated decision of the Ministry.&#8221; says the\u00a0Lawyers Collective .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The JSA has however \u00a0decided to hold the conference at the original venue, Taj Samudra Hotel but limited to one day (i.e. 22nd December), with the voluntary contributions from the Judges themselves. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shirani+Bandaranayake&amp;x=6&amp;y=3\">Chief Justice Bandaranayaka<\/a><\/span> will be the chief guest while Justice Wigneswaran will be the key note speaker.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif;\">&#8220;In a further development there is\u00a0uncertainty\u00a0whether the vehicles (cars) \u00a0that had been imported recently for the use of Superior Courts Judges (Court of Appeal and Supreme Court) \u00a0would be released to the judges.&#8221; the Lawyers Collective further says.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Meanwhile issuing a statement the\u00a0Asian Human Rights Commission says;<strong> &#8220;<\/strong>Obviously, the government has tried to stop this annual gathering where the judges normally spend two days and also have the opportunity to interact with each other and to socialize. The obvious fear would be that the judges will naturally talk about the threat faced by the independence of the judiciary in Sri Lanka. Recently many events of concern have happened such as the attack by a minister with others on the Magistrate&#8217;s Court and the High Court of Mannar. The magistrate complained also that he was threatened by the Industries Minister Risath Bathiudeen. A contempt of court issue as well as criminal is pending on the matter. Then there was the attempted kidnapping and assault on the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission.
