{"id":68180,"date":"2013-01-07T11:23:02","date_gmt":"2013-01-07T11:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=68180"},"modified":"2013-01-11T14:30:35","modified_gmt":"2013-01-11T14:30:35","slug":"breaking-news-writ-issued-by-court-of-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/breaking-news-writ-issued-by-court-of-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking News: Writ Issued By Court Of Appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/\">Colombo Telegraph<\/a><\/span>&#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the application filed by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shirani+Bandaranayake&amp;x=8&amp;y=5\">Chief Justice<\/a><\/span>, the Court of Appeal has issued a Writ of Certiorari quashing the proceedings of the Parliamentary Select Committee on the impeachment.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, there is no valid, actable finding under the law as pronounced by the Appeal Court on the basis of which a vote can be carried in the legislature to remove the Chief Justice from office.<\/p>\n<p>The position endorsed by the Court is effectively that steps need to be taken to provide by legislation (as opposed to Standing Orders) for the impeachment of Superior Court judges.
