Canadian Liberal Party Leader Bob Rae yesterday expressed concern over\u00a0the impeachment process against the Chief Justice Dr. Shirani\u00a0Banadaranayake<\/a><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bob Rae<\/p><\/div>\n

According to the media release issued by Rae,\u00a0 he has also asked the\u00a0Canadian Foreign Ministry to raise the issue with the Common Wealth\u00a0Secretary General and the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, which\u00a0has the mandate to disciplining violations of the association\u2019s basic\u00a0\u00a0principles<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a member of the Commonwealth and the designated host of the 2013\u00a0Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Sri Lanka has a duty to\u00a0uphold democracy and the rule of law. As they have failed to do so,\u00a0Canada has an obligation to hold its government to account at the\u00a0highest level.\u201d<\/p>\n

“As recently raised by the Canadian Bar Association, the lack of due process and open attack on the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law are deeply troubling. They are part of a continuing deterioration of democracy in Sri Lanka and directly violate the Commonwealth’s fundamental values.”<\/p>\n
