{"id":69014,"date":"2013-01-11T14:55:43","date_gmt":"2013-01-11T14:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=69014"},"modified":"2013-01-15T13:35:33","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T13:35:33","slug":"chief-justice-impeached","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/chief-justice-impeached\/","title":{"rendered":"Chief Justice Impeached"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/\">Colombo Telegraph<\/a><\/span> &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shirani+Bandaranayake&amp;x=10&amp;y=8\">Chief Justice<\/a><\/span> is impeached a short while ago. \u00a0Parliament votes 155 for the motion\u00a049 against it\u00a0<strong>and 20 abstained<\/strong> . Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said that motion against the Chief Justice was passed in parliament.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Issuing a press statement the United States Embassy Colombo says it remains deeply concerned by the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, which were conducted in defiance of a Supreme Court order.\u00a0 This impeachment calls into question issues about the separation of powers in Sri Lanka and the impact of its absence on democratic institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The Embassy is also concerned about accounts of violence during several of the protests.\u00a0 The Embassy calls on all sides to respect the right of peaceful protest, and calls on the government to ensure that non-violent protesters are protected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The United States, along with our partners in the international community, continue to urge the Government of Sri Lanka to uphold the rule of law and respect the principles of democratic governance&#8221; the US says.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) says it vehemently condemns the resolution passed by Parliament today to impeach Sri Lanka\u2019s Chief Justice, Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake.
