{"id":72355,"date":"2013-02-04T17:47:16","date_gmt":"2013-02-04T17:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=72355"},"modified":"2013-02-05T10:24:41","modified_gmt":"2013-02-05T10:24:41","slug":"lawyers-collective-regrets-independent-scrutiny-of-rule-of-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/lawyers-collective-regrets-independent-scrutiny-of-rule-of-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawyers Collective Regrets Denial Of Visa To IBA; Urges Government To Be Transparent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Lawyers+Collective&amp;x=7&amp;y=0\">Lawyers Collective<\/a> &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is reported that visas issued to a delegation of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=International+Bar+Association&amp;x=11&amp;y=10\">International Bar Association<\/a><\/span> (IBA), consisting of eminent jurists, headed by the distinguished former Chief Justice of India\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=J.S.+Verma&amp;x=7&amp;y=9\">J.S. Verma<\/a><\/span>, \u00a0had later been revoked. The delegation was expected to conduct meetings with a diversity of stakeholders on the development of the legal profession, rule of law and the independence of the judiciary in Sri Lanka. This was not the first time IBA missions visited Sri Lanka\u00a0and in fact, on two previous\u00a0occasions\u00a0the IBA visited and compiled reports, which enriched the legal profession and judiciary \u00a0immensely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/not-be-misled-by-false-propaganda-of-state-media-lawyers-collective\/lawyers-collective\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-64616\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-64616\" title=\"Lawyers collective\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Lawyers-collective.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a>The International Bar Association, established in 1947, is the world&#8217;s leading association of legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. \u00a0It has a membership of more than 50,000 individual lawyers and over 200 bar associations and law societies spanning all continents. It has considerable expertise in providing assistance to the global legal community. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is a member of the IBA.\u00a0<strong>Sri Lankan legal community is an\u00a0integral\u00a0part of the global legal fraternity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of Sri Lanka has constantly stated that the impeachment against its Chief Justice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shirani+Bandaranayake&amp;x=7&amp;y=11\">Shirani Bandaranayake<\/a><\/span> has been done in accordance with the constitutional and international best practices. An independent assessment would have assisted the Government of Sri Lanka to prove its\u00a0credibility. It is\u00a0regrettable\u00a0that the Government of Sri Lanka has denied visas to the members of this\u00a0delegation, consisting of persons of highest\u00a0credibility\u00a0and recognition. Lawyers Collective believes that if the government did not have anything to hide, or it had followed Latimer House principles, the mission would have been permitted. <strong>We wish to remind those who matter that the only country which denied visas to IBA missions ever was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Fiji&amp;x=6&amp;y=7\">Fiji<\/a><\/span> in 2008, which was later suspended from Commonwealth in 2009.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lawyers Collective urges the Government of Sri Lanka in the circumstances to be\u00a0transparent and be open for scrutiny of its impeachment process and Rule of Law. <strong>Such openness would help the democracy in Sri Lanka in general and the professional standards of the Sri Lankan legal professionals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":64616,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-72355","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Lawyers Collective Regrets Denial Of Visa To IBA;
