{"id":74235,"date":"2013-02-19T09:41:11","date_gmt":"2013-02-19T09:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=74235"},"modified":"2013-02-26T00:42:24","modified_gmt":"2013-02-26T00:42:24","slug":"video-sri-lanka-mass-grave-called-a-crime-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/video-sri-lanka-mass-grave-called-a-crime-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Sri Lanka Mass Grave Called &#8216;A Crime Site&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Human remains in central Matale district is &#8220;the scene of a crime&#8221;, a forensic medical officer has told Al Jazeera.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The remains of more than 150 people have been\u00a0excavated in the town of Matale in central Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0skeletal remains\u00a0were discovered late\u00a0last year\u00a0by workers building a facility at a hospital in Matale.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ajith Jayasena, Matale hospital&#8217;s judicial medical officer in charge of the investigation, told Al Jazeera that the site &#8220;is a crime scene&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W16wTDaS45I<\/p>\n<p>Bone samples will be sent abroad to find out when they died and soil analysis of the area is also being done, investigators said.<\/p>\n<p>Basil Fernando, the executive director of the Asian Human Rights Commission, told Al Jazeera\u00a0that\u00a0&#8220;criminal justice&#8221; remains the &#8220;greater area of difficulty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is only one mass grave, I&#8217;m sure\u00a0there are many, many mass graves in Sri Lanka,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Crimes were committed&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are allegations that the bodies are those of victims of a small pox outbreak from a hundred years ago, while others believe they may be those killed by a flood some years ago.<\/p>\n<p>But other theories hold that the people died in political contexts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SNTYnSr6HL4<\/p>\n<p>The Matale area was an epicentre of a late 1980s\u00a0uprising by leftist Sinhalese group, the JVP, in which the state matched the guerrillas&#8217; extreme violence.<\/p>\n<p>The group says this site could potentially be where some of its members may have been buried.<\/p>\n<p>Jayasena\u00a0told Al Jazeera\u00a0that no real conclusions could be drawn until a detailed analysis of the skeletal\u00a0remains is carried out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The real story behind the dozens of people found buried here can only be known with more comprehensive investigations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0added that &#8220;evidence of decapitation, dismemberment and concealment&#8221; indicates that &#8220;crimes were committed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were bundles and bundles of skeletal remains.
