Your Excellency,<\/p>\n

America\u2019s Resolution at Geneva<\/strong><\/p>\n

Permit me to remind you once again the fact that the Mahinda Chinthanaya<\/a><\/span>, in my opinion is fast losing its credibility now, due to the irresponsible utterances of some responsible persons. Those responsible for this tragic situation seem to be deliberately doing so to cause you much embarrassment and knowingly or unknowingly to bring discredit to you. Please do not allow this trend to go unabated. It is in the best interest of the country that you cry halt to the expression of views by various people, at random.<\/p>\n

Our people have short memories. But you cannot say that of the Government and your advicers. Most informations are recorded by relevant authorities for your guidance. Furthermore there is the media too to guide you.<\/p>\n

May I remind you that almost all countries, except one or two, fully backed you to win the war against the LTTE<\/a><\/span> by banning them in their respective countries and even offered various assistance to achieve it. Even now the LTTE remains banned in many such countries. Now that a few of these countries are supporting the resolution, moved and to be moved, it is not fair and reasonable on our part to accuse them as Pro-LTTE. We should not forget that each country that has its mission in Sri Lanka has its own source of information too, which they share among themselves. In this matter no country can influence the other unless they have some vested interest. Various disturbing statements had been made, irresponsibly by various people, without specifically mentioning the name, accusing some NGOs of supplying mercenaries to the LTTE, a very serious accusation that resulted in limiting the operation of NGOs in the country. Even today NGOs are not permitted to operate in the North resulting in putting to starvation people in many parts of seriously affected areas in the North, who would have otherwise had the opportunity of getting various assistances including food for themselves and milk for the children.<\/p>\n

India had and has a bigger role to play during and after the war. If the Tamil Naad police had not been put on alert, thousands of tons of steel balls and chemicals used for the manufacture of bombs and hand grenades etc would have found their way into various parts of the North and through the North to the other parts of the country and the consequences would have been far beyond our imagination. There is no doubt that the Sri Lankan forces won the war but the fact that without the support of the civilians, it would not have been easy sailing for the forces and without the Tamil Naad police the war could not have been won.<\/p>\n

I wish to quote from an appeal I made to the leaders of all political parties, important personalities and religious dignitaries in India \u201c Long ago it was Mahatma Gandhi who had said that India and Sri Lanka can\u2019t afford to quarrel. I do not say that everything is fine in Sri Lanka. There are very many concerns the Sri Lankan Tamils have. In many instances such concerns go beyond the limits of tolerance, necessitating the intervention at high level. Whether we like it or not feelings between the two neighbouring countries are very much strained. At this rate the two Nations will soon face strong repercussions, before which both countries should cry halt to this trend and take remedial measures to soon clear all misunderstandings between the two, in the best interest of both countries\u201d.<\/p>\n

The above point of view should be given serious consideration by you. Citizens of both India and Sri Lanka should take the trouble to sort out all their differences so that good will and co-operation will prevail between the two countries. As a first step you should take the initiative to save India from facing any embarrassment, in the event of America moving fresh resolutions at the meeting of the Human Rights Commission<\/a><\/span> of the UN in Geneva, at the forthcoming session. Only 22 miles of Palk Strait separate Sri Lanka from India. Hence I repeat that we can\u2019t afford to fight between us.
\nYour Excellency, you should take a bold step at this juncture to meet the requirements under the resolutions based on the fact that as President you owe a duty to the people and as Minister of Defense to defend the forces.<\/p>\n
