United Arab Emirates<\/a><\/span>\u00a0urged not to deport Sri Lankan Tamil journalist Rathimohini Lokini. \u00a0Human Rights Watch (HRW) today said\u00a0Lohini, an ethnic Tamil, “would be at grave risk of torture” if sent back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cFor the UAE to return recognized Tamil refugees to a grave risk of torture in Sri Lanka would signal a total disregard for their well-being \u2013 and the most basic principle of international refugee and human rights law,\u201d said\u00a0Bill Frelick<\/a><\/span>, refugee program director at Human Rights Watch. \u201cSri Lanka\u2019s treatment of Tamils they deem politically suspect is dismal and under no circumstances should the UAE deport this group there.\u201d<\/div>\n
Rathimohini Lokini\u00a0is an ethnic Tamil born in northern Sri Lanka. Prior to 2009, she lived in the Kilinichchi District in the Northern Province which remained under the control of the Tamil rebels. She joined the LTTE run NTT television (National Television of Tamil Eelam) in June 2006 and worked as a news caster. She was one of the main female newscasters of the television station and therefore became widely known.\u00a0She worked for the TV until December 2008 and left the rebel controlled areas on the 08the of December 2008.<\/div>\n
