The fact is: we don\u2019t know what motivated these men. There will be a trial \u2013 and then we will know more. In the mean time, the American media has been throwing out\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2013\/04\/20\/the_roots_of_chechen_rage\">every possible stereotype<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(<em>indominable mountain men!!!<\/em>) and disjointed factoid from Wikipedia their interns could gather.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Juan Cole isn\u2019t really \u201cthe media,\u201d and I normally enjoy his analysis of Middle East affairs quite a bit \u2013 but I was perplexed by\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2013\/04\/fathers-sons-chechnya.html\" target=\"_blank\">his trying to use 19th century literature<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to explain Monday\u2019s actions\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/opinion\/2013\/04\/2013421145859380504.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in absence of thorough knowledge about the motive\u2019s of the alleged bombers<\/span>.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<strong>They were playing the nihilists Arkady and Bazarov in Turgenev\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>Fathers and Sons<\/strong><em>,\u201d\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2013\/04\/fathers-sons-chechnya.html\" target=\"_blank\">explained\u00a0<\/a><\/span>scholar Juan Cole, citing an 1862 Russian novel to explain the motives of a criminal whose\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/J_tsar\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter account\u00a0<\/a><\/span>was full of American rap lyrics. One does not recall such use of literary devices to ascertain the motives of less exotic perpetrators, but who knows?
