Approximately one hundred British Tamils, human rights and workers&#8217; rights campaigners, and trade union members attended this inaugural event, which was designed to foster closer ties between the British Tamil community and unions in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The Solidarity Day event was addressed by representatives from many of the UK&#8217;s most influential and largest trade unions \u2013 including UNISON, the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCU), the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the RMT transport union and Unite \u2013 as well as social activists and campaigners for other persecuted communities. Attendees also had the opportunity to view artwork and exhibitions on the persecution faced by Eelam Tamils.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/uks-most-influential-trade-unions-to-support-tamil-freedom-struggle\/sd-pic-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-90893\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-90893\" title=\"SD pic 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SD-pic-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SD-pic-1.jpg 448w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SD-pic-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a>All the speakers expressed their support for the three current objectives of the Tamil freedom struggle:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Granting of the Tamil people&#8217;s right to self-determination;<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0An international, independent inquiry into the atrocities committed in 2009 and recognition of the genocide that has been perpetrated against the Tamil people by the Sri Lankan state over the last 65 years;<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Relocation of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November 2013, which is currently set to be held in Colombo \u2013 or, failing that, a boycott of this meeting by leading Commonwealth member states such as the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the unions emphasised the common ground that exists between their organisations and the British Tamil community. They stressed the dual benefits the Tamil community stands to gain from playing a more active role in UK trade unions \u2013 both in terms of improving the welfare of the community in the UK and in bringing the suffering of Tamils in Sri Lanka to the attention of a large and sympathetic UK-wide audience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/uks-most-influential-trade-unions-to-support-tamil-freedom-struggle\/sd-pic-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-90894\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-90894\" title=\"SD pic 3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SD-pic-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SD-pic-3.jpg 448w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SD-pic-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a>The union representatives recounted the role the unions have historically played in bringing global injustices \u2013 such as Apartheid in South Africa \u2013 to the attention of the British public.
