{"id":93371,"date":"2013-06-28T21:54:13","date_gmt":"2013-06-28T16:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=93371"},"modified":"2013-07-08T03:10:36","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T21:40:36","slug":"the-face-of-buddhist-terror-sri-lanka-to-ban-time-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/the-face-of-buddhist-terror-sri-lanka-to-ban-time-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"The Face Of Buddhist Terror: Sri Lanka To Ban Time Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sri Lankan Government is likely to ban the latest edition of the Time Magazine after political\u00a0Buddhist groups have taken offence at an article appearing on the news magazine&#8217;s cover, Colombo Telegraph learns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/the-face-of-buddhist-terror-sri-lanka-to-ban-time-magazine\/time-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-93375\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-93375\" title=\"Time\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Time1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Time1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Time1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Bodu+Bala+Sena&amp;x=4&amp;y=1\">Bodu Bala Sena<\/a><\/span> Group has lobbied the Media Ministry and Secretary to the Ministry of\u00a0Defence\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Gotabaya+Rajapaksa&amp;x=12&amp;y=4\">Gotabhaya Rajapaksa<\/a><\/span> to ensure the offending issue never reaches the news stands in Sri Lanka, Media Ministry sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The cover story on the July 1 issue of Time Magazine is entitled &#8216;The Face of Buddhist Terror and features Myanmar&#8217;s extremist monk <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Wirathu&amp;x=11&amp;y=5\">Wirathu<\/a><\/span>, who has been accused of stoking anti-Muslim sentiments with his 969 movement, launched in February, which calls on Buddhists to boycott Muslim shops and businesses. There have been at least three anti-Muslim riots this year in central and northern Myanmar, leaving thousands homeless. In June 2012, Buddhist communities in the Rakhine State attacked Rohingya Muslims, leaving 167 people dead and 125,000 people homeless.<\/p>\n<p>Media Ministry Secretary <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Charitha+Herath&amp;x=8&amp;y=2\">Charitha Herath<\/a><\/span> is reportedly consulting with Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella about how to approach the issue.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ministry sources, the BBS is demanding that Herath consult with the Defence Secretary to tear off the cover story in the magazine before it is allowed on the newsstands in Sri Lanka. If the ban goes ahead, this will be the first time an international magazine is banned in Sri Lanka for a story that has nothing to do with Sri Lanka directly. Sources said the Government is planning to ban the online version of the story as well.
