{"id":99366,"date":"2013-08-09T01:21:25","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T19:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=99366"},"modified":"2013-08-13T05:26:29","modified_gmt":"2013-08-12T23:56:29","slug":"tna-uses-kadir-land-case-to-address-northern-land-grab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/tna-uses-kadir-land-case-to-address-northern-land-grab\/","title":{"rendered":"TNA Uses Kadir Land Case To Address Northern Land Grab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Using the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Lakshman+Kadirgamar&amp;x=13&amp;y=5\">Lakshman Kadirgamar<\/a><\/span> land acquisition case to highlight the ongoing Government land grab in the north, the Tamil National Alliance brought the issue up before Parliament yesterday.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">TNA Leader <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=R.+Sampanthan&amp;x=9&amp;y=4\">R. Sampanthan<\/a><\/span> slammed the Government\u2019s ongoing forcible acquisition of land belonging to Northern Tamils, claiming it was part of a greater design to alter the demographic in the predominantly Tamil area.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4076\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/tna-psc-and-the-danger-of-wrong-turnings\/sampanthan-leader-of-the-political-proxy-of-the-tamil-tigers-the-tamil-national-alliance-addresses-reporters-during-a-media-conference-in-colombo-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4076\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4076\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4076\" title=\"Sampanthan, leader of the political proxy of the Tamil Tigers, the Tamil National Alliance, addresses reporters during a media conference  in Colombo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/samapanthan-colombo-telegraph1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/samapanthan-colombo-telegraph1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/samapanthan-colombo-telegraph1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sampanthan<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to the TNA Leader, the Government was forcibly keeping some 25,000 rightful owners of 6381 acres of land in Valikamam in the Northern Province. Many of them have now sought legal action against these moves by the Government, Sampanthan said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cEven the late Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar\u2019s son is one of the petitioners filing action against the forceful acquisition of his private property,\u201d he told the House.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sampanthan said that four years after the war ended, high security zones still remain in the Jaffna peninsular. \u201cMany Northern families are unable to return to their land and resettle because of this involvement by the Government,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The TNA Leader said the move indicated a greater design to alter the cultural and linguistic identity of the North and East and to change the demographic composition.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt points to the Government pursuing a secret agenda, that would ensure that there is no need for a political resolution to the ethnic struggle that will lead to genuine reconciliation,\u201d the TNA Leader told Parliament.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The TNA\u2019s decision to raise the adjournment motion on the Northern land struggles resulted in Parliament being suspended for about 15 minutes after objections were raised by UPFA MP A.H.M. Azwer. A Party Leaders\u2019 meeting was then summoned to decide on the issue.
