AKD’s Burden: It’s Quite Heavy, My Friend

By Vishwamithra

“Even extreme grief may ultimately vent itself in violence—but more generally takes the form of apathy.” ~ Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness

The foremost responsibility of the AKD government is one: safety and security of its people. Everything else falls second to it. Sustained prosperity, a superior education system and a healthy upbringing of her children are amongst them. President Dissanayake and his government is facing today a global situation which is unique; its architecture and design, its roots and its branching out, its very sustenance depends not on the narrow implementation of the domestic policies and monitoring.

As of March 2026, Sri Lanka has been navigating a delicate balance between economic recovery via the IMF, securing foreign investment (from both India and China), and managing foreign policy challenges. The AKD government must navigate external pressures, such as debt restructuring with global creditors and the ongoing impacts of West Asian conflicts on energy supplies, requiring more than just domestic policy to succeed.

On the other hand, India, Sri Lanka’s closest neighbor, is increasingly becoming an enigmatic player on the field. Her primary concern is to feed, clothe and house her vast population. While India remains a country of “extremes”, it is currently characterized more by its resilient growth and welfare-backed stability than by a population on the verge of a poverty-induced eruption. Being prone to eruptions every now and then, her numbers—in terms of population—sometimes act as both her strength and weakness. Her GDP is amongst the first five, ranking number 4 behind, US, China and Germany. She is not a poor country now. Yet vast numbers are still struggling to put food on the table, while the richest families can compete with any in the world.

While the upper classes in India benefit from a well-ordered environment, the middle and lower classes, who face the brunt of high socioeconomic pressures and public infrastructure scarcity, often show behaviors that appear chaotic or undisciplined, reflecting a struggle for resources rather than an inherent lack of principle. In the midst of the US/Israel-Iran war, the lengthening lines for fuel do not seem to be a representation of the whole of India. One does not see modern and latest vehicles on these lines. On the other hand, the fuel scarcity triggered by our rulers’ economic mismanagement became a grand equalizer, hitting every class of consumer alike.

Some may argue that comparing India and Sri Lanka is an exercise in false equivalence. Yet, Sri Lanka and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake cannot operate in isolation from the complex geopolitics of the current international milieu. It was the Aragalaya-22 that fundamentally dismantled the old political order, creating the unique circumstances for voters to embrace AKD and the NPP as the only viable alternative to a failed establishment.

She is seemingly unfathomable, and despite her ostensible neutrality, one is led to believe that she is neither fish nor fowl insofar as the US/Israel-Iran war is concerned. Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is carrying the proverbial torch to the brim, so to say, giving full expression to his Master’s, Prime Minister Modi’s, views and postures. But neither of them has been found to be uttering falsehoods in any given context. Diplomacy, the nuanced language, is frequently employed to navigate conflicting interests, resulting in statements that are neither blatant falsehoods nor complete truths, but rather carefully crafted narratives tailored for the audience.

But one cannot question Modi’s patriotism nor his determined commitment to execute all policies and principles in order to achieve his geopolitical goals. Friendliness with Russia and a pragmatic engagement with China are two essential ingredients in that recipe and Modi is measuring his pounds ounces to the last decimal in that exercise.

While India is engaged in this strategically sound exercise of diplomacy, China maintains a complex balancing act. Xi Jinping remains a critical partner for Tehran; China currently absorbs nearly 90% of Iran’s oil exports, which provides a vital economic lifeline for the regime despite global sanctions. In a comparative sense, Iran is more significantly dependent on China than vice versa. Time and time again, China has proven to be a reliable partner and some nations treat China as a trustworthy global friend.

Nevertheless, a significant segment of the Sri Lankan public holds a negative view of China’s influence, accusing it of exploiting past administrations—particularly the Rajapaksas—through opaque deals and unsustainable debt, creating long-term sovereignty concerns. But insofar as the current US/Israel-Iran war is concerned, the position China is adopting now seems to be only reasonable diplomatic bearing a twenty first century superpower should take.

China has been a friend of Sri Lanka for many decades. She has been extraordinarily aggressive in her pursuit of friendship; however, since of late, she has shown a very keen sense of urgency in asserting herself in a given circumstance. Acting as a ruthless executive of authority and wielding all available leverage, China has, more often than not, advanced its cause of global dominance through economic assistance and strategic business partnerships.

India and China are the two closest and most influential allies Sri Lanka could have today. India’s relations with Sri Lanka go a way back to the very birth of Ceylon as a nation. According to Mahawamsa (The Great Chronicle), Vijaya, the founder of Sinhala nation, was a prince who was banished by his father-King, hailed from Vanga and Kalinga kingdoms (present day Bengal and Odisha). This relationship-thread that Sinhalese have with Northern Indians may have been tempered by the Tamils of India whose birthrights are deeply rooted in the Deep South of India, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, for instance.

Against this macro context of Sino-India paradigm, Sri Lanka might stand quite puny; economically, the gulf could not have been wider, but culturally and socially they could well be soulmates. Deep-rooted in Eastern social ways, all three nations have been subjects of outside imperial powers. President Dissanayake of Sri Lanka sits in the middle of this triangle, contemplating as to how his government could navigate the stormy waters of twenty first century clashes between fellow nations.

AKD has to grapple with the macro economic factors as well as those micro economic aspects of a rural population whose sole aspirations are often constrained by the immediate demands of daily subsistence. The path that the Aragalaya-22 showed to the country was no winding curve. It was direct, straightforward, clear, and unambiguous. The demands, purpose, and impact of the Aragalaya-22 were not confusing, hidden, or manipulative, but rather a direct confrontation of power. AKD and NPP being carried to power on the shoulders of those who organized, planned and executed of Aragalaya-22 is no shame; in fact it was their pride and privilege.

AKD and the NPP cannot afford to rest; any loss of momentum risks surrender to the very stagnation they promised to change. But the war in the Mideast may have altered the trajectory of Sri Lanka’s post-bankruptcy journey. So long as public confidence in AKD and the NPP holds, managing these complex challenges may prove less strenuous.

Can you or other blind believers in AKD leadership still have the same opinion?

We have been waiting for someone who is well-read to enlighten us on the ground realities.?

The Kumara-Kumara symbiosis will be the catalyst to bring down this government. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to the next Aragalaya in the making.

Can we have a few instances how this ‘global dominance’ manifests itself?

Practically all states have geopolitical goals. I can’t recall any that act solely in the interests of other states.

Isn’t that rather contradictory? Is Vishwamitra suggesting sauce for the goose but not the gander?

To me, yes, but to some who speak highly of their knowledge and concerns, AKD is the best president, and Vijitha Herath is the best FM since independence…. with Thanakola eaters from Unwatuna bragging about the silly reactions of the current L-BOARD government. Aiyyo… just looking at how they have renovated public toilets in Pettah busstand says it all.

“Sauce for the goose but not the gander” has become an apt way to describe the current political moment in Sri Lanka. Actions that were once strongly criticized under Ranil Wickremesinghe are now met with relative silence under Anura Kumara Dissanayake, raising serious concerns about double standards and selective accountability.
The earlier economic direction; working with the International Monetary Fund to rebuild foreign reserves and prepare for structured debt repayment from 2028—appears to have stalled, while no equally clear alternative has emerged. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens face mounting hardship, with rising electricity tariffs, fuel costs, and increasing shortages of essential inputs such as fertilizer and energy resources, all contributing to a rapidly escalating cost of living.

“when Americas has the biggest stockpile of Nukes in the world others/Iran can’t have ………”
As of 2026, Russia holds the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons, with over 5,400 total warheads, including around 4,300 active nuclear warheads.
But, on the other hand, even Putin is sane compared to the ass in the video and his boss. How can the idiot talk about international law while stopping ships on the high seas taking oil to Cuba?

    Readers,
Fuel prices in Sri Lanka continue to strain households and businesses, especially when contrasted with recent reductions seen in countries like India and Australia.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh5827LDt74

For many, the gap between expectations and outcomes over the past year has become increasingly difficult to ignore. While some remain supportive of the current direction, others are questioning whether enough tangible progress has been made to justify that confidence.

At the same time, public discourse is being heavily shaped by social media, where narratives can be amplified, repeated, and sometimes mistaken for consensus. This makes it even more important to separate perception from reality. Rather than dismissing differing views, the moment calls for sharper public scrutiny, honest evaluation of policy outcomes, and a willingness to hold leadership accountable. Sustained public trust cannot be built on messaging alone—it must be earned through clear, measurable results.

The gap between rural and urban Sri Lanka is not just about roads or hospitals—it’s about competence. Rural schools, teachers, and doctors are struggling to meet the demands of the modern world, while urban counterparts thrive. Many rural doctors cannot even communicate effectively in English, leaving visitors and patients frustrated. Politicians and leaders, elected on promises of “world-class” governance, fail at the most basic tasks—like producing an accurate primary school textbook. The truth is clear: the abilities of those in power are often an illusion, built on layers of lies and empty rhetoric.

The NPP government, with full facilities and a strong mandate, has proven it cannot deliver even when the stakes are low.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFg9Vc9WOoY (BORUWA OVERTOOK HORA).

Premier Minister Dr. Amarasooriya and the ruling party parade luxury cars and grand speeches, yet fail in the small but crucial matters that affect everyday lives. Voters were misled, fooled by exaggerations and false promises, and the consequences are now visible for all to see. Sri Lankans should have thought twice before voting, instead of being blinded by campaign theatrics. Competence matters, not just charm or slogans—and the cost of ignoring that truth is the disappointment we are living today.

    ” AKD’s Burdon………”

I thought it would be a well-arranged and constructive ‘Opposition’. But all my wishes fell apart as I continuously watched its performances in the Legislature and outside. Just watch how their performances are being portrayed to the country at large by the social media.

    https://youtu.be/9mcQMaNr-8A?si=fRX25QO5FnjSTmYk

Do we have any hope of a future, other than AKD? In the above social media, all those claiming to be ‘Strong’ and ready to undertake Governing functions are presented with their own views.

In this context, AKD has no “Burdon” at all.

      Readers,
May our laundry men, such as “known THANAKOLKA eater aka former murderous JVP activist from Unawatuna,” be endowed with intelligence. The following schoolchildren undoubtedly give an unforgettable lesson to this tremendous rhetoric of the government minister, chatty Nipunarachchi.

Why should the incapable be tasked with bleaching the unclean because their country failed? Please emphasis on the kids who are concerned about “fraud in coal purchase.”
The only way out would be to appoint a commission (by appointing good young ministers that proved their job well during the previous govt) akin to Weimar to control this country for at least 3-4 years while sending the NPP government home. Thambuthegama has done more harm to the hopes of this country than any other leader to far.

“Do we have any hope of a future, other than AKD? “
We are not experts to predict what will happen in the future to Sri Lanka . It is an accident that happened unexpected. The fact is that “Aragalaya 22” is not fully represented by AKD. It is just a change of leadership, not change of system of governance, understanding what made this nation to fall into the bankruptcy and what sort of system which will make Sri Lanka is their mother land by all citizens where there is no influence of any religion in governance.

“We are not experts to predict what will happen to Sri Lanka in the future.”

You don’t need to have studied rocket science if you can use your five senses objectively. There, your instincts would tell you that those who have seized power are either jokers or very untrained, powerless idiots.

They may be adept at distorting the truth in favor of their survival methods, but I have the impression that people across the country, having not done their homework correctly, picked an imbecile to be the state’s leader.

His ministers are simply provocative men, and nothing has been done to help the common good of the people in the last 15 months.

The long-awaited opportunity given to leftist leadership has, in practice, drifted onto the same path as right-wing governanceo; nly at a slower, more hesitant pace.

Public anger toward political leadership is not misplaced when patterns of inconsistency, weak preparation, and ideological drift become impossible to ignore. Humans are not governed by raw instinct in politics; they are shaped by discipline, education, and accountability. When leaders emerge without strong analytical grounding or the ability to translate ideals into practical policy, the result is rhetoric without delivery. In Sri Lanka’s case, the expectation was for a decisive break from the past, yet what many citizens witness instead is a recycling of the same approaches under different labels, often exposed during critical forums where clarity and competence are most needed.

If the post-crisis period following July 2022 had been used to clearly identify and communicate the structural failures of political actors; especially those within established party systems—the electorate might have been better equipped to demand and elect truth-driven leadership. That missed opportunity continues to echo today. A functioning democracy depends not on slogans or shifting ideological masks, but on leaders who speak honestly, act consistently, and withstand scrutiny with substance.

Only when truth is made visible and unavoidable to the public can genuinely accountable leadership rise above political convenience, Period !

    ” AKD’s Burden………” Dear Readers:

I viewed this subject from different angles, and in one of my comments, I directed your attention to a ‘Comedial’ presentation by a YouTube channel. It was purely to show you how shallow our Opposition (leaders and frontliners) are.

This ‘Shallowness’ (immaturity and partisanship) appears in this ‘Forum’ too. It can be seen from the type of ‘Insults’, ‘Derogatory.’ (mostly personal) and ‘Indecencies’ are included in ‘Comments’ forms. I firmly believe that this should not happen in a ‘Forum’ like this, where a large number of decent, intelligent, and knowledgeable presenters and commentators meet. Instead, we must be able to discuss ways and means of doing something, even in a small measure, to uplift our country from where we are. In this regard, I found a very interesting presentation by a YouTuber. Please watch:

    https://youtu.be/68EQog6yqoY?si=LJeT-pJMl0CkXUAT

Please leave aside the two persons (Samanmalee & Sudantha) taken to discuss, but seriously think of the ‘Message’ he tries to convey. Thank you.

India is not an ally. Looking at recent events in the Middle East, JR should never have allowed “paripu drop” or other nonsense. Those planes should have shot down . Excluding the use of nuclear weapons, India cannot win a war with Sri Lanka.

“ Sustained prosperity, a superior education system and a healthy upbringing of her children”
These CAN NOT be achieved by not achieving reconciliation and looking into the grievances of the Tamil Speaking Citizens in SL and abroad ( Diaspora)
Maintaining the army camps in the North and East even after 2009, is not conducive to achieve harmony in the country. As long as the GoSL isn’t treating them (TSC of SL) differentially Tamils are not keen in getting Eelam.
The current Ministers not being able toThink and speak in English shows the education they had over the last 4 decades!

We all know that if Ranil, that Govigama, Royalist English-speaking scion of an ancient Radala family was in power, the cost of living would have been brought down, the economic miracle that is Sri Lanka would now have the greatest GDP in Asia, near to or surpassing India and Australia ! We’d all be speaking good, approved English (yes, even our politicians), the war on Iran would have no effect on energy prices, fertiliser availability nor climate-change. There would have been no floods (he would have commanded the rain to fall elsewhere) , Village schools would have the same quality of teachers as Royal and St. Thomas’ (and buildings to match) and he, the Man from Batalanda, would have done this all in the same time-frame !

He should have been President but I guess Public anger toward his political leadership took place when patterns of inconsistency, weak preparation, and ideological drift become impossible to ignore. Add to that his obvious authoritarian streak added fuel to the fire and he architected his own downfall,

      MTS,
      .
Did you know that there was a time in our country, when Sinhala was NOT given priority. My paternal relatives told me about this in the past. During that period, they relied entirely on the English language. For this reason, older generations often speak English in a manner similar to native speakers.
This is not unique to Sri Lanka; it can also be observed in countries such as India, Ghana, Tansania, Cameroon, South Africa, and many other African nations.

I personally encountered these realities after leaving the country for my studies in Europe in the early 1990s, when I lived in a hostel in Germany with international students. I was compelled to learn and adapt quickly.

At the very least, we should now try to view these matters with an open mind so that accusations and prejudices can be avoided. Only then can our society be shaped based on facts and historical truths.

I have even come across individuals who criticize others despite not being able to read or write Sinhala themselves, while relying entirely on English. This situation is not uncommon among earlier generations who were heavily influenced by colonial English education.

    cont.
If young Indians can learn several languages, why can’t Sri Lankans become trilingual? Languages are the future of any country.

Sri Lankan society today reflects a clear divide between English-speaking individuals and those educated primarily in Sinhala or other national languages. This division has its roots in history, particularly during the colonial period when English was the dominant language of administration, education, and social mobility.

After independence, the shift toward prioritizing Sinhala aimed to restore national identity and cultural pride. However, this transition was not managed in a balanced way, and the role of English as a practical link language weakened over time.
In contrast, countries like India have successfully encouraged multilingualism among younger generations. It is also common in smaller European nations to prioritize bilingual or multilingual education. For example, in countries such as Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland, young people are strongly encouraged to become fluent in both English and their native languages. I have personally lived in the German-speaking part of Switzerland and observed how naturally this multilingual ability is developed.

As a result, differences in language proficiency have contributed to social and professional inequalities in Sri Lanka. Many university graduates and professionals, including doctors, study in English but struggle to communicate fluently in it.
