A High Level Of Cunning Is Not A High Level Of Intelligence

By Suranimala –

The Rajapaksa family cannot be credited with intelligence or wisdom. But, they have village cunning. Cunning can deceive an ill-educated mass who have been led to believe that the Country is in peril, “Buddhism is in danger and the Sinhala race will be a minority”. That is the slogan, which of course is stuff and nonsense, but a great sell. Not done out of belief but out of great convenience. Why? It works for the Rajapaksas.

It is pertinent to recall the words of Robert Knox. “The Cingalese have a high level of cunning, which they mistake for a high level of intelligence”. I am one (a Sinhalese and born a Buddhist ) but I am also a homo sapien of the world order. Today the words of Knox are not common to all Sinhalese but hold true when it comes to crafty politicians, Also, to a great extent, it exists in village life. The politicians massage the mindset of the masses to kneel down before the Bo tree, Saffron robe, and the peals of the Temple bell. We believe that would bring us to a better place in our next life. Religion and religious philosophy should be very private to each individual and has no place in a nation’s Constitution. Many may rise in arms at this, but please face reality. This is the truth. Nothing but the truth. Buddhism is NOT UNDER THREAT. It will never be. It would if we continue to move away from Buddha’s words in their true essence. It is being pushed in that direction as of now. The Enlightened One’s teaching is under threat from distorted application jointly foisted upon a gullible public ( educated and not ) by a section of politicians ( for personal gain ) and Sanga (out of fear), I hope. I will not include the section of Sanga that is politically active within that thought process. Let us forget them. Why? The politically active Sanga and the larger section who stay within the teaching of Buddha’s word are far apart from each other as chalk and cheese. Sadly, it is the former who are heard by the public. Sadly, it is the former who are knighted by the politicians in power. Sadly the knighted Sanga believe that they deserve such accolades and the Politician KNOW that they benefit from bestowing such. A low level of cunning is mistaken for a high level of intelligence. See?

Be that as it may, let me give some unsolicited advice to the Rajapaksa family.
None of us are going to get out of this place alive after we are born. You included. Tirupathi, Mahanayake’s combined nor all the known and unknown deities and genies will give you eternal life. In time you have to face the Jury upstairs. Whatever the number of faiths the Rajapaksas’ place their bets with the rules are the same. As age catches up with you Mahinda, as it must with the rest of your clan in the future, you cannot cheat, lie to a higher being for mercy for what you have brought upon a gullible yet innocent people who trusted you. And your family who you taught to plunder at will. But, more importantly, you changed the mindset of a serene Buddhist majority to hate the minorities to suit your singular purpose. History will never forget that nor can you and your family buy yourselves out through stolen billions. I do not wish nor long to predict history. Yet I did say this before too, remember?

Our Judicial system deems that a person is innocent until proven guilty in a Court of Law. But you are the law! Who will prove you guilty? If anyone does try they do so at their own peril. You have extended that facility to your minions as well. Your brother, who you unleashed on us has taken it to another level. Examples galore. Sheer arrogance or is it narcissism? Within Sri Lanka, the hallowed protectorate of Buddhism, you have cheated, even the Buddha. You must know that. Return the ill-gotten bounty to the people and you may find peace in the evening of your life.

The country is bleeding. People are hungry. This is 2022. Food at an affordable price is but normal across the world. The wolf is at the door of our rural folk who believed in you. Buying a Jet to stand by to get away for medical treatment or from a marauding public is but a temporary reprieve. Mahinda, you set your brother and family upon the people as messiahs. They thought you and your clan will give them a touch more. They did not understand or know that there was more to life than three meals of rice. You and your family try to keep them thinking that it is so. But even the three meals of rice are a stretch now. They hoot you. It is spontaneous. Using the Police or Army to stop it will only make it worse in time. Friendly nations may come forward to help temporarily. The Sri Lankan people at large will have to pay back your profligacy. I do not think that you are daft enough to believe that it would be the country that pays back and not the people.

It is time. In your own interest in the evening of your life please Go. If and when you do, make certain that you remove all of your family from public life as you have not taught them the basics of humanity and being of honest service to the people.

Remember Knox. “Cingalese have a low level of cunning which they mistake for a high level of Intelligence. “Many Cingalese are now educated and will as they must, bring Sri Lanka back to her full potential. Sadly, Mahinda, you nor your family will not have a role in that play. Your time is done on earth as it is in heaven (hell). You may note that I have not touched upon your brothers and the rest of your extended family that you have thrust upon us. They do not matter as the blame lies squarely at your feet.

Let someone else prove Knox wrong as it must. We deserve to be more than a people who are of a low level of cunning believing that it passes off as intelligence. Just glance at the scores that excel overseas. I rest my case. I hope you do too.

Thank you. The great value in this article is that it is from a respected writer who is both a Sinhalese and a Buddhist.
I wish the 69 lakhs who voted for this regime will have access to this article in the Sinhalese language.
A lot of what we write in English is lost on those who need most to read it.

Very aptly replied to the point.

Have you noticed that Blind eagle has nothing else to say, other than racist slur?

Anyone with a human sense who tells the truth is a traitor. This is how the majority of the yellow pets also think and reason.
          .
I think all this resentment is due to built up regrets from childhood, mainly due to poverty, neglect, hunger, etc. Parents are responsible for bringing up such negative minded psychos to this world.

There are speculations, that those secret printed materials could well be DOLLARS in billions.

The weight of $1 billion depends on the denominations that were used. If the currency were strictly in $100 bills, $1 billion would weigh roughly 10 tons. If one is using $1 bills, $1 billion would weigh 1,000 tons, which is equal to 2 million pounds.

            https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/what-is-the-ugandan-link-and-shady-dealings-with-sri-lankas-kings/

There were also rumours that over 102 tons of printed materials were airlifted to Uganda – not keeping that secret. Why on earth not yet a single citizen questioned, what this was. ?

There is a saying in sinhala vernacular

සමහර මිනිසුන් ඌරගෙ මස් උරගෙ ඇන්ගෙ තියාගෙන කපන විඩියට හැදිල… some butchers prepare pork meat, by cutting them keeping on pigs for some reasons., the kind of people are that tasteless. Likewise, they looted the last cent, but their POLITICALmight has turned to be their right – is being used to hide them publicly – making arrangments abusing their powers……. why the citizens stay as if they are made permament blind and deaf ?
              :
RTI rights were passed, to some extent, they should be able to reveal the TRUTH behind the hidden, secret printed materials weighed 102 tones ( 102 x 1000 kg).
              .
The speculations are there, if 1 billion of US dollars would be 10 tons, – the sum of the load of printed material should be 10 billions….
              .
National reserves fo the CB not even 1.5 billion of US dollars.
              .

What exactly did Elvis Presley mean “In The Ghetto”?
I never enjoyed his music anyway.
          Are you a fan?

            Native,

“What exactly did Elvis Presley mean “In The Ghetto”?”

Read the lyrics …….. it’s about the hopelessness of children born into poverty – mostly Black and Hispanic – in the ghetto (poor slums.)

“I never enjoyed his music anyway.
            Are you a fan?”

Early Rock and Roll emerged from the Blues and Gospel-music and all the pioneers were Black. You’ll be shocked to learn the godfather of Rock was a woman: Sister Rosetta Tharpe! :)) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gELe5Rj_tXU Chuck Berry and Little Richards copied her. Even Jimi Hendrix’s riffs/licks go all the way back to her.

In a predominantly White society they needed a White face to bring Rock and Roll to them and Elvis took the opportunity and reaped all the fame and wealth. The Black pioneers stayed poor. Even Jimi Hendrix’s catalogue of music was owned by Paul Allen (Bill Gates’ early Microsoft partner.)

Then the Whites from England took over and made all the money …….. Beatles are nothing but a Rock-fied version of the Everly Brothers, who themselves ripped off the music of Sam Cooke. Listen, the similarities are pretty obvious.

        – not long ago, how many of them in that family – were alleged and cases were filed against them, incl…. the first citizen, who became the president thanks to misleads and torchbearing yellow pets.
-Mahinda Rajapkshe- though became the SELF made king thanks to stupid artists and other men, that hayed while the sun was shining.
        – There were some doubts being defeated in 2015, whether or not the men were real capable of doing some good work….. however, their reelection proved to even little children, GOTA, MARA, NAMA, CHAMA; and all other criminals incl, bandit queen who made the most popular gold buiscuit queen to colombo business circles that their capabilites are not its all cracked up to be.

        Dear Eagle Eye

The Rajapakses and before others of their ilk came to power on the basis of getting the sinhales to hate the tamils.

THIS has resulted in now ceylonese tamils like me hating the sinhalas with a vengeance too.

SInhales are even shocked when they even face mild negatives from majorities when they migrate from their beggar sinhale.

Anyway keep up the good work of helping the sinhala traitors of THEIR OWN PEOPLES destroy the country! GOOD JOB.

Another factor is that the RAJAPAKSES’ not merely themselves but their descendants are forever cursed for the murders that they did and will face the inevitable KARMA.

        Dear Ajith,
…” Religion and religious philosophy should be very private to each individual and has no place in a nation’s Constitution.”….
May be from one’s own point of view, but the facts are that still they do, otherwise.
“Throughout history, many kingdoms and nations have closely aligned themselves with religion by establishing official, government-endorsed faiths. TODAY, more than 80 countries either have an official religion or favor one or more religious groups over others, according to a new Pew Research Center report.Oct 3, 2017. “

          Dear Ajith,
In fact we are no different from Norway:
“All inhabitants of the realm shall have the right to free exercise of their religion. The Church of Norway, an Evangelical-Lutheran church, will remain the Established Church of Norway and will as such be supported by the State”.
Not that I subscribe to that principle, but that is the way in this topsy turvy world we live in.

          • 0
            0

            My View,
Thanks for your response. I don’t know all those 80 countries included the religion in the constitution. So, more than 100 countries it is not. Considering the fact that Buddhists Monks and Politicians mis use the religion to oppress other religions and religious people in this country is it right to include that in the Sri lankan constitution?

Now what left is – STAPLE of the majority to be made RATATHANAKOLA – or better cow dung. That could perhaps open the eyes of the people, at least for the next election.

This country/nation suffers today – not because of lack of resources in the country, nor lack of literacy rates, but because MLECHCHA POLITICS of a far devious family. There were youth, ,that louded, if DA RAJAPAKSHE used condoms not allowing any offsprings to that family, things would have gone “flourished” to entire srilanka.Latter can now be considered as one of the best match among the mushrooming “wisdom quotes of the day”:

“A lot of what we write in English is lost on those who need most to read it. “

In reality, it is not so. The material appear in CT has to reach as much as possible educated Ceylonese. It is they who have to squash the Sinhala Buddhist Intellectuals (The Viyathmaha) and take over the stage. Many of the materials here is not graspable to laymen even in their vernacular languages. The educated Ceylonese has to liberate this peasant group. This kind of forceful liberation said in Hindu tale Valli Thiru Manam. Lord Muruga went to take Valli with him. She was a native mountain girl, had no knowledge of Muruga. Without knowing the value, she was seeking her protection hiding behind the wild animals she was rearing, which are the deer and peacock, boars & the like birds. Failing on his bid, Muruga called his elephant brother. Fearing of elephant, she abandoned her wild friends and surrendered to Muruga. The Status of the 6.9 million is that they cannot take medicine materials directly from the Weththa (CT). The medicine has to be mixed by mother with her breast milk and fed to the child. The neighbors who are like teachers, vithanaies, office workers and others have to feed the laymen in the meeting occasions like, vegetable market, temple unions and other occasions.

      Dear H.
This is not quite fair to blame one person only. As from 1930’s all contributed in some way or another to drag the country – each one jockeying to get ahead selling some idea which created divisions and not to unite. Tamil, Religion, Anti Western sentiment, False National Security, et al, were the slogans – not any one really beneficial to the country as a whole, but good enough to get elected.

      But Mr Harishchandra,
      .
Can we say beautiful about ” our majority of people in SL” ?
      .
If there mindset would have been beautiful – no bunch of ANIMAL-LIKE politicians would repeatedly be re-elected to the parliament …… is not that so ?

Mahinda Rajapakshe travels to THIRUPATHI and other DEWALEs today, sometimes more than he is used to go to his wash room/ why ? Our stupid majority did not let him relinquish from his greedy politics.
      .
All varioius kind of ANAYLST today, prove that huge debt installments that the state have to pay off today – have been made during the second term (2010 to 2015) of Rajapkseh misadministration.
We all know how HIS EXTRAVAGANT – POMPOUS WASTEFUL activities emptied the state then.
CHOGEM to his loads of MEN AND WOMEN toured to US and EUOPREAN cities were no second to some kings of tribal africa also in this century. Harishchandra,
        .
I dont think outcome today is only based on power shifted from a cabinet to a president – if the candidates would have been out of Rajakashes family – to ones with ” sure of instincts to sensible politics/ ones with wholeheartedness to people s issues (meaning not to the rich but to the majority suffering people)…. things would have improved for SURE.

Also, I think it would have been much better, a decent apolitical candidate got elected as the president. THeir genetics – I mean those born to MEDAMUNALA cave are special. ….unique to that criminal family … no doubt.
        .
We know how GOTA-BAYA stood against prevailing law and order at the time he was investigated for that matter- having looted/abused statefunds for building their family museums…… no punishment was given to him, but every simple simon is being imprisoned for stealing a mango or a mustard seed.

“Today the words of Knox are not common to all Sinhalese but hold true when it comes to crafty politicians,”
    —-
It is good that Mahinda Rajapakshe is a cunning person. He used his cunningness to fool Prabhakaran and became the President. If Mahinda Rajapakshe did not become the President, probably the people in this country are still going through hell under terrorism of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

If MR didn’t end the war, it’s possible that we may still be fighting but are we any better now that the war had ended almost 20 years ago? Whether the Rajapakses ended the war singlehandedly is arguable but it certainly does not gives them the right to plunder the country.

          .
The way these comments get arranged on the computer display (with only the slightest of indents) it becomes difficult to find out at whom your comment is directed. Who knows, it may be at me!
          .
Some comments have got so infantile that even old men like me might regress into childhood. It would certainly help if in the case of almost all comments, the name/pseudonym of the guy being targeted is mentioned.
          .
Words seem to lose all meaning. Nobody seems to even google a word before asking for help. Nathan asked. I gave my explanation relating to types of dictionaries and thesaurus because I used to do workshop sessions just to get teachers of English to give some thought to the dictionaries they recommend. Many ask their students to buy an “Oxford Dictionary” period!

It is true that Rajapaksas family cannot be credited with intelligence or wisdom. They are filthy politicians and Statesmen. They are concerned of the next election. They cannot be leaders. They are not concerned of the future generation. Their concern is to stay in power to keep the position to secure at the next election. This is why they cannot lead the country. They focus on programs and not on vision. Their priority is to secure at the next election and pre-occupied with promises and not progress of the country. That is why they are not Statesmen and the country is suffering for which they are not the least concerned as they rely on military power.

“Despite riots, wars, violence, human rights abuses, second class citizen treatment, etc., etc. minorities still want to live under Sinhala rule.
        This is called Stockholm syndrome.”

“Stockholm syndrome is an emotional response. It happens to some abuse and hostage victims when they have positive feelings toward an abuser or captor.”
        Source: https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/what-is-stockholm-syndrome

Minorities in Sinhale are not abused by anyone. If they are abused, the number of people from minority communities cannot keep on increasing in Colombo city turning indigenous Sinhalayo to a minority.

The ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ is applicable to indigenous Sinhalayo in Sinhale who tolerate minorities despite the fact that they abuse Sinhala majority through riots, wars, violence, terrorism, human rights violations, war crimes, vandalizing Sinhala Buddhist heritage sites and spewing racist slur such as ‘Sinhalayo are not welcome in the North’.
To give an example, Tamils declared war against Sinhala nation and massacred Sinhala Buddhists for three decades but after Tamil terrorists were defeated Sinhala Buddhists from South sent lorry loads of food and other essential items to Tamils in Yapanaya.

For balance, British had similar things to say about Tamils too.

    1. “The Tamil coolie may be a shocking barbarian in point of intellect and civilization as compared with his master, but making allowances for his origin and opportunities he is by no means an unfortunate or contemptible character.”

    – H. W. Cave, Golden Tips (Cassel, London 1904) cited by Donovan Moldrich in Bitter Berry Bondage, The nineteenth century coffee workers of Sri Lanka, – p.VI,

    2. “Untruthfulness comes as naturally to a Tamil as its mother’s milk.”

    – Ibid – p.VI, cited from William Sabonadiere, The Coffee Planter of Ceylon (Guernsey, UK, 1806) p.86.

Jadam is quoting from the racist anti Thamizh Chingkalla extremist site Lanka Lies from an article wrtten by Mahindapla posted on the 06.01.2014. Robert Knox’s observations are historical and very useful. It was made long before British colonialism and explotation occurred in this region. However these nasty racist observations by uneducated British colonial white supremacist racists , who had come to exploit the Indian subcontinent and its people and call not only the Thamizh but many other South Asian people by various derogative terms like eg. Niggers. Sly cunning but kept on using and exploting them to produce immense wealth from themselves eg in the tea rubber estates, diamond mines etc. Shows how despicable these largely undeducated white British and other racist racist colonials and the immese damage they created, which is still reverberating in many parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is even more despicable when racists and anti Thamiizh like Jadam keep quotign these racist dribble and nonsense that was quoted by largely uneducated white trash British colonial white supremacist racist planters who had come to exploit , to justify Chingkalla Buddhist racsim against the island’s Thamizh.

In 1806 The kandyan kingdom was not captured by the British . Even the Vanni which was under the last Thamizh king/chief Pandara Vanniyan was only captured by the British in 1803, when Pandara Vanniyan was defeated and captured by them. The Kandyan kingdom , where 90% of these cofee plantations were established was only captured in 1815. A new colony called Ceylon was only established by the British only in 1833, by merging the then separate Chingkallam and Thamizh parts of the island, that had remained separate for more than a thousand years and had also been ruled separately as different colonies by the Dutch and the Portuguese . The cofee plantations were started much later, largely in the Kandyan central highlands somewhere in the 1850s and peaked around the 1860s . It is around this time, that the British started to import indentured Thamizh labour from South India to work on these cofee plantations that later got converted to tea plantations. Therefore it is strange that the so called Coffee Planter of Ceylon William Sabobadiere , is quoting about Coffee plantations and Ceylon in 1806, when there were no Cofee plantations, a colony called Ceylon which only was established in 1833. The Kandyan kingdom was still not captured at that time and they had just captured the Thamizh Vanni from Pandara Vanniyan and and the British were still in their early stages of rule on the island and lastly Tamil labour from South India only started to arrive in the 1850s. Good try

            Old,
If the correct grammar is “His”, not “Their”, then other than that, how accurate I am on my point on that line; Highly? Then, thanks for correcting my grammar and guiding me to point at Svenson and releasing me from the guilt of intentionally using “Their” and standardizing the Sinhala Buddhists, where the erudite author of this essay too is a member.
Self-criticism is wiped out of this community in the name of saving the land Vijaya the lion secured, by the “Cunning, but not Intelligent” , for their masters’ political advantage. Irrelevance of Robert Knox’s correctness, as Svenson claims, there is an outdated perceptional era that has passed in between the lapsed two centuries, where Robert Knox lived and we live in, in this world. If Professor Hawking talked about black-hole yesterday or Eisenstein talked about relativity the day before yesterday, I am entitled to learn about those and become another Sundar Pichai. I do not have to learn Sinhala Only or Mahawamsa to understand that how Vijaya’s Grandpa, the beast, had sex with a woman and had children. They (Sinhala society) either has to scrape off Mahavamsa or the science. But they willingly added the Modern Dutugemunu war victory to that folktale only to teach it to Tamil Students as history.

          • 0
            0

I agree with you, as I too a Tamil and “Their” is the politest form in Tamil for “his” (Tamil has four forms of addressing “Adeai or Adeei, Nee, Neer & Neengal) though on occasions, “his” could be the correct grammar. But that is only if after the toddy seeped through and bugs only left with us. My point is not holding Svenson for his thinking that the Colonialists were the only racists, but SinhaLE are being angels. This idea is forcefully fed into “them” by the government Establishment of Lankawe. Two months ago, on the 70 th anniversary of CCP, Ranil and Old King Rowdy said that Ma O brought the freedom to Sinhalese from the Tamil occupiers and because of that obligation, Sinhala Community has to be sold to China. Lowest bidder, to exploit Lankawe. Yesterday Ranil said in an interview that the New King, who is fighting with everybody, is fighting with Royal Aanduwa, and soon going to fight with him, In Tamil they say, the man who is going to die will not cooperate to be fed the medicine. Remember, Ranil went to Oxford to lecture about European Colonists, (probably some points appearing in Mahavamsa, noted by Mahanama) for Western Students. Ranil’s talk is obviously showing that his Mr. Clean era has passed by long before, the reaming on is opportunistic Naria.

Shrewdness/Craftiness/Cunningness are the characteristics of Rajapaksas’.
+ that of the previous PMs and Presidents. They were all interested in keeping the POWER at any cost to the country. Their actions/activities of sowing ethnic and religious differences brought our country into this plight. Had some of the educated /Sensible Singhalese voiced the opposition to these crooked Politicians , our Country would not be in the current pathetic situation.

    Surinimala
I think nothing much has changed since the time of Robert Knox.
We Sinhalese have remained the same over the years.
Anyone who uses the heart instead of the head is a bloody fool.
How else can you explain electing these same scoundrels as our Saviour’s again and again?
They say actions speak louder than words.
    .
At least now let us make a start by calling a spade a spade and addressing the elephant in the room.
That is the only way forward.

      Hi HT,
“How else can you explain electing these same scoundrels as our Saviour’s again and again?”
I agree with you whole heartedly.
That should never happen in a country where the constituent citizens are people with a soul with a sound mind and body to complement.
It happens in virtuous Sri Lanka, time and time again! WHY?
The electors are not mature enough to discharge their duties and right to Universal Suffrage!
      Is it not that clear??

      Hi HT
What do you make of the ‘Leader’ of a Country and People (read as electors 6.9 million, with an elected legislature of 2/3 majority to boot, laments in a public meeting, “Why are the people (voters) electing the same scoundrels as their Leader’s again and again, if ‘they’ are unhappy with the way they govern?”
Indirectly (Meaning/implying) they – the voters are ‘Yakkos’ –uneducated fools!
      Is it not!?
It is clear, that the Leader avoided saying, “Why are the people (voters) electing US – ‘scoundrels’ as their Leader’s again and again, if they are unhappy with the way WE govern”?
In fact that was very cunning, ‘village style’ and not wise, implying “I am the virtuous and you are mere minions and fools, to be used and discarded as I progress”.
The king does not appear to realise what he is saying, consequences of his uttering or doing?
Displaying his vanity, lack of education, knowledge maturity of thought process, wisdom and exposure?
Is he fit enough to be the Leader of Sri Lanka?
      What a Leader?
      Whither Sri Lanka?

Let us sit back and reason for a second.
In 2005 when CKB handed over power to MR and Co. Sri Lanka was the no 1 producer of tea in the world, was at our best in the Garment industry, Sri Lankan airlines was making good money, LKR had good purchasing power and corruption was not the order of the day. All this was with the war still on, in its 22nd year.
In the years that followed in Maras tenure, we lost our status as no1 tea producer, our garment industry went to hell, Sri Lankan was destroyed and became a liability, corruption hit high heaven, rule of law is non-existent, Foreign reserves at it’s lowest, Chinese debt at its peak and Chinese influence unbearable. And now the agricultural sector was needlessly sabotaged by the fertilizer saga. Buddhist monks steamrolled into needlessly getting involved in Racist politics, undermining the essence of Buddhist Dharma and the sacred Buddhist image.
Are these things not so obvious?
Should anyone in his right senses need to look any further to realize who the real traitors are?
They are the curse of our country.
Most of our People are like Eagle eye, as blind as Bats.
    Stewing in ignorance.
Hanging on to primal thoughts, their minds stuck in prisons they have created for themselves.
So sad. So sad. 73 years of independence wasted. Just think about it.

I was agreeing with you until “…………corruption was not the order of the day….”
It was!! As plain as the back of your palm!! Chandrika promised to bring in ‘human face’ to the open economy free of cronies in 1994 but she absolutely did the opposite! Remember Thilan Wijesinha, Sanath Gunathilaka, Sumal Perera and hundreds of others?? And Baddagane Sanjeeva? PSD murderers??? Go back to archives please!

Let me make make myself clear, when I say “corruption was not the order of the day” I do not mean that there was zero corruption or that CBK was a saint.
I am saying that corruption was way less then, in comparison to the Mara era.
        .
Mara and co institutionalised corruption in Sri 🇱🇰, I hope you agree with me on that point.
        .
        Anyway thanks for your observation.
I will research on the point you have raised. Every bit of constructive feedback is beneficial.

          Dear HT,
…..I am saying that corruption was way less then, in comparison to the Mara era. Mara and co institutionalised corruption in Sri 🇱🇰, I hope you agree with me on that point….
          Yes very true.
But as night follows day, it is natural that streams become rivers in time. What CBK started with Tawakkal, built up to mass scale plunder. In fact Lakshman Kadir pulled this up publicly, thinking it was Nimal Siripala as Minister of Cement Industries, but fell silent when he realised who was at the bottom.

People from many parts of the world are taking up jobs suitable to them in any other
part of the world for a couple of reasons and mainly for a change and Holiday with
an earning . Teaching a foreign language could be top on the list . These guys , Basil
and Nandasena are no different . Just look at their age and go back fifteen years to
look for job prospects in the US for their age and qualifications ! For a clever non native
English speaker , it takes at least from ten to twenty years to pick up native and both
formal and informal English in any of the English speaking country . It is I believe ,
now easy to work out why these two guys are here playing with the life of their own
people . Mahinda is the man who planned to share the wealth with the family and
for this , his only weapon was Racism ! He chose this as his politics to defeat the
opponents . He knew the pulse of the majority of the majority and he created a
situation to let those racists take the matter into their hands and give them the
leadership . This is what they are still trying to achieve to continue in power . Who
gives them jobs at this age in the US ? Not even in a canteen ! Srilankans are 90%
literate , so cheap items !

I will not only blame the Rajapakse family, especially Mahinda for where we are today. The blame should be equally attributed to Ranil, Maithripala, past and present Speakers of the Parliament, and the slave MPs who got nominations from Mahinda in SLFP and SLPP. They have all stolen money from the kitty and protected each other. We need a regime change and the manifesto of the party must say that a local and foreign investigation group/judges will be appointed to investigate and adjudicate on actions taken by politicians from 2005 to date.

“ Be that as it may, let me give some unsolicited advice to the Rajapaksa family.
None of us are going to get out of this place alive after we are born. You included. Tirupathi, Mahanayake’s combined, nor all the known and unknown deities and genies will give you eternal life. In time you have to face the Jury upstairs. “

Don’t be that much uneasy Surinimala. Take it easy. When we (Royals) go there, not by own jets, but we promise to take the conventional Boat, that shuttles between the lands through the Sagra (in Hinduism, a water buffalo), as an experience of death and rebirth. Of cause when we are there we will ask for “SINHALA ONLY JURY ONLY”. Our case cannot be heard & concluded there, so judges dismiss the case. Hell extradites us back to our native land. Then we will come back to enjoy our left behind wealth in the hell, which we created in this heaven. It is the wealth that we deposited here but the Enlightened one (and you too) named it as the Karma, in his disquisition.

“Knox Dutu Lakdiva” is a book by Premachandra Alwis which translates Robert KNox writtings into Sinhalese. This book should be essential reading for our youngsters. It teaches about our own customs and short comings as seen by an outsider. This type of history is eye opening and will help guide our Yakkos to hopefully become better at choosing their political leaders. We see three opposition forces jockying for power. The NPP, the SJB and the SLFP. None of them talk about how we got into this mess. Who bought us here. The NPP makes vague promises including the restoration of fertilizer and a new constitution. Both these things are unachievable. To the NPP explain the problem, identify the culprit then explain how you punish the culprit and safeguard the country from this family. Then explain how you go about restructuring the debt so the the country can breath before vaxing about constitutional reform.

Continued.. To the SJB I read with great interest the goings on at your first meeting in the new year. Ditto to all those who criticized your leader. He richly deserves it and more. I wrote many moons ago that the appointment by him of Dayan Jayathilake is and act to of sabotage. I urged that he be removed. Dayan was put there to ensure that the engineered breakup of the UNP would not be reversed ever. Your foolishness or even worse cunning blackmail type manipulation by the Rajapakshes is aimed at keeping your party out of action. Look at what Dayan has been up to a life time hater of RW admiring the NPP instead!! You are either fools or willing conspirators if you do not fix this problem immediately. I may be bold enough to suggest the if your leader cannot act then maybe it is time to mend your fences with the party that you all came from. Kudos to Eran, Harsha and Kabir for giving some clarity on the economic front but more needs to be explained particularly identifying the man solely responsible for getting us here and what you propose to do to keep his thieving family permanently out of politics.

Cunning and Lying have been the key traits of most politicians and “mudalalis” and the new “darlings” in the Sri Lanka corporate sector – cardboard heroes who do not walk the talk. People laugh about how they fooled someone to “gain a benefit” and it has become ingrained into the DNA. Starting from admitting kids to schools – everyone knows the documentation is doctored and many people “paid off” but everyone “follows the corrupt process” as business as usual. Children are taught by parents to lie at the school interviews. Fast forward 13 years in school, we expect teenagers to be truthful and with high morals? it’s like “asking a fish to climb a tree” as Albert Einstein once said. The mess we are in has deep roots in our upbringing – lies, win-lose attitude, extreme selfishness, extreme arrogance (Hubris?), looking down on others, respect based on money status and material wealth.. I can go on and on.

I cant recall Knox saying precisely that about a ‘high level of cunning’, but in ‘Concerning the Inhabitants of this Island,’ there are certainly remarks which could add up to the same thing:

‘But I am to speak only of the natural proper People of the Island, which they call Chingulays.
Of these Natives there be two sorts, Wild and Tame. I will begin with the former. For as in these Woods there are Wild Beasts so Wild Men also.’ [And here he discusses the Vaddas.]

‘But to come to the civilized Inhabitants, whom I am chiefly to treat of. They are a people proper and very well favoured, beyond all people that I have seen in India….’
    But, he says later:
‘They are crafty & treacherous, not to be trusted upon any protestations: for their manner of speaking is very smooth & courteous, insomuch that they who are unacquainted with their dispositions & manners, may easily be deceived by them. For they make no account nor conscience of lying, neither is it any shame or disgrace to them, if they be catched in telling lyes: it is so customary.’

  • 1

‘…The Natures of the Inhabitants of the Mountains and Low-lands are very different. They of the Low-lands are kind, pittiful, helpful, honest and plain, compassionating Strangers, which we found by our own experience among them. They of the Up-lands are ill-natured, false, unkind, though outwardly fair and seemingly courteous, and of more complaisant carriage, speech and better behaviour, than the Low-landers…In their Promises very unfaithful, approving lying in themselves, but misliking it in others…’

I must stress that I am only quoting Knox here, & don’t subscribe to such observations myself. Although I do remember that when I first came here I took a long time to discover that “Yes” didn’t always mean “Yes”! And “No” when something offered is refused, didn’t necessarily mean “No’ & one had to repeat the offer. Ok, nothing to do with cunning, but a small example of misunderstanding a different culture.

[I repeated the 1st para here as i anticipate it being cut by CT.
