GR’s Muslim Carpetbaggers

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

History will remember the fatal day of 22 October 2020, when a group of Muslim carpetbaggers joined the ruling gang and supported the controversial 20th Amendment, which is destined to pave the way for the slow death of democracy in Sri Lanka and establishment of a clannish autocracy. In the future, after tasting the bitter fruits of an autocracy, generations of Sri Lankan Muslims would lament over the folly of their forefathers for choosing community leaders without any commitment to the welfare of the country and community. Do Muslims need enemies when they have such betrayers as leaders?

Of all the communities in the country, it is the Muslim community that has suffered most in recent years.  With the emergence of a Sinhala-Buddhist ethno-religious supremacist movement in the aftermath of the civil war, manifesting itself in the shape of several radical political and pressure groups, this community began to face an existential threat.  After more than a millennium of peaceful co-existence and integration not only with Buddhists, but also with followers of other religions, Muslims, in the eyes of these supremacists, appeared as aliens deserved to be banished from the country. A wave of anti-Muslim phobia with attendant violence was therefore unleashed after 2009. Neither the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) nor its breakaway faction All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) nor any Muslim leader from the national parties could do anything to arrest that trend and prevent the cycles of violence. In fact, it was their powerlessness and indifference that was partly responsible for a bunch of Muslim fanatics and extremists to embark on a revenge mission that killed two hundred and fifty innocent Sinhalese and Tamil Christian worshippers on that bloody Easter Sunday, last year.

Political analysts and observers have established that Gotabaya Rajapaksa (GR) won his presidency with the full support of the supremacists and their commercial and financial backers. Although he promised to deliver ‘prosperity and splendour’ within a ‘secure, virtuous, disciplined and lawful’ society, yet, from day one of his victory he proved to be a president for Buddhists only and not for all. He began to show a total disregard to problems faced by minorities and Muslims in particular, except to parrot that he governs for the benefit of every community. For example, when a Buddha statue was stealthily erected at close proximity to a century old mosque in Nelundeniya, he refused to intervene and allowed the district court to handle the matter. The court decided to allow the statue to remain permanent with a wall built separating it from the mosque, a cause for future trouble and eventual closure of that mosque.  Similarly, when security forces guarding the prison in Mahara took over the mosque there and converted it into a recreation cum worship centre, GR refused to stop it and Muslims have lost that mosque too.  Also, when Muslims protested against cremating bodies of virus-killed bodies, he refused to intervene and supported the Chief Medical Officer, who without any scientific evidence maintained that the virus would spread if dead bodies were buried. Finally, when Muslim private lands were encroached into by GR’s Archaeological Task Force in Pottuvil, people there had to come out to the street and threatened violence to stop losing their lands. Lately, how humiliating was it for Muslims to watch over the media the way one of their elected representatives, brought to the parliament a couple of days ago?  Couldn’t the President have ordered a more civilized way of bringing him?  Is this how the so called One-Law-One-Country operates?

The Muslim carpetbaggers, who voted to strengthen GR’s hands and are prepared to remain just curry leaves under his autocracy cannot plead ignorance of all this.  Discrimination against Muslims in government appointments, in hospital treatment, in the private rental market, in getting land grants, in the distribution of distress allowances and so on, has become a norm and is public knowledge.  Where is justice and equity in matters relating to Muslims?

One does not know what has been promised to these black sheep in return for their support. But one thing is sure. Muslim community is bound to suffer even more in the future.  Don’t these shameless leaders know that discriminatory restrictions have already been issued against building mosques, and not to places of worship of other religions?

From ancient times and under the reign of Buddhist monarchs, Sri Lanka successfully managed and protected its plural society and prospered. After independence from colonial rule, the country earned worldwide reputation as the most senior and thriving liberal democracy in Asia. There may be flaws in that democracy as there are flaws in all democracies.  Yet, there is no better political model for a plural society than liberal democracy. To a Muslim minority in particular, there is a considerable level of “overlapping consensus” between the tenets of liberal democracy and teachings of political Islam as meticulously researched by political scientist, Andrew F. March in his Islam and Liberal Democracy: The Search for an Overlapping Consensus, Oxford University Press, 2009.  In contrast, an autocracy with a supremacist religious and cultural agenda is a threat to the country’s plural polity and heterogeneity.  Beyond that however, Muslims have an additional reason to fear about the emerging autocracy.

Along with moves to demolish democracy is the downward spiraling of the economy. The current wave of the pandemic is adding momentum to that spiral. Apart from difficulties that the government is facing at the macro level, households are confronting difficulties every day at micro level.  Shortages of food and other necessities are increasing prices to unaffordable heights; panic buying is lengthening disorderly queues in front of shops; consumer debt is escalating. In short there is an acute deficiency of income syndrome (AIDS), which widens the wealth gap and is impoverishing the masses.  In times of economic adversity public discontent at the authorities is unavoidable. When that happens, authorities could always try to divert that anger on to private distributors.  The ordinary shopkeeper will therefore become the first victim of consumer unrest. The Muslim community, branded as a business community, is therefore in a vulnerable position.  The supremacists and their anti-Muslim commercial backers who brought the GR-MR regime to power would be waiting to exploit such an eventuality.  Will GR with his tri-forces protect the Muslims and dare risking the support of supremacists?

In the meantime, there was another comic scene in the 20A drama. The so-called Muslim party SLMC, demonstrated its organizational chaos and party indiscipline when its members deserted their leader and moved en masse to support the motion. Whether it was the result of a deal between the party leader and the ruling regime or a deliberate and conspiratorial revolt against that leader one does not know.  However, it is time that both parties, SLMC and ACMC, are dissolved. They have become a liability to the Muslim community.

To end this short note, 20A presented a golden opportunity for Muslim leaders to show some courage and demonstrate to the government how frustrated and dissatisfied is their community at the way it has been treated by the new regime. Whether these leaders were intimidated, bribed or cajoled, their support to this amendment is a historic blunder, which will be regretted and condemned over many years to come.

Tamil nationalism by the time of Vaddkkoddai Resolution was not interested in the Muslims or Hill Country Tamils.
Hostility was evident among proto-Tamil-militants in various contexts since Standardization.
The LTTE was hostile all along. Some of the others like PLOTE were more accommodating, but resented Muslim asserion of their distinct socio-ethnic identity.
Tamil nationalism has yet to come to terms with its parochial attitudes and cultural conservatism, which includes male chauvinism and casteism.
The LTTE, alongside its political consistency, represented the worst of Tamil parochial attitudes.

Do you also condemn the killing , ethnic cleansing and stealing of Tamil lands in the east by the Muslim home guards who were heavily armed by the Sri Lankan state. The number of Tamils who were ethnically cleansed by these Muslims and the Sri Lankan state ,. are far higher than the number of Muslims were expelled by the LTTE in the North. What about all the Tamil homes, shops and businesses down south that were burnt destroyed , by Muslim mobs, what about all the Tamil civilians down south who were killed and raped the same Muslim mobs . Due you also condemn this? As you are a self hating Tamils and very quick to attack and condemn Tamils. What about all the treachery and backstabbing by the Muslim politicians and elite against the island’s Tamils from the time of independence , just to get some crumbs from the Sinhalese table ? Do you condemn this too? You are very silent about this . The LTTE did not expel the northern Muslims just because they felt like it. They expelled them due to all the above matters, especially what happened in the east and these northern Muslims were caught collaborating with the Sri Lankan armed forces against the Tamils and hoarding arms. Start condemning me as usual

Even the LTTE showed some remorse about its actions in the early years of this century (it came close to an apology but stopped short by expressing regret), but not the disgraceful defenders of its evil deeds.

The passing of the 20 A amendment to the constitution is another indicator that the SLPP is the only political party that hold political power in the country.

they have outsmarted the UNP and dissolved the SLFP the SJP is just a shadow of an opposition.
JVP is a toothless – political party that has lost its bite.
TNA is diluted because of Wiggy – and Richard and the Muslim Congress is in their pockets.
    So check mate!!!
Any way Sajith and Ruwan are not made of leadership material so SLPP will be here to stay for a very long time.
Let’s hope and pray that the Rajapaksa clan will run the country with the same efficiency they out stead the UNP / SLFP and gained unprecedented political power.

      Whimpy Kid,
You are right it is the SLPP (Rajapakse Family) have the political power in this country. 20th amendment proves it at the moment. However, how long they will hold power is a question. The way they loose the popularity among Buddhist Sinhala Monks and how they are going to deal with China, USA, and India and the impact Corona on economy indicates that there is a great challenge in the coming years. As an opposition SJB has potential for getting more support from Buddhist Sinhala using the same tactics played by Rajapakse. Don’t think that Muslim UNP votes in getting through the two third majority is free and it is very costly. So, there are many political challenges to Rajapakse family and Buddhist Sinhala voters.

        1

The 20th Amendment washed away all gratitude and sympathy in Sinhalese Buddhists towards the Rajapaksa clan forever. Their betrayal will never be forgiven.
20A is only to facilitate Basil Rajapaksa’s short term plan to grab power. Knowing full well that he will not be accepted by Sinhalese Buddhists, he has turned towards Muslims while making necessary legal provisions to allow immigrants to vote, which easily could be rigged in his favour.

Why the society is fallen to that depth ? Please read below. You can NOT be proud of being supportive to SLPP, which would promote facism and thugism in this country on behalf of a family rule.
Why should tax payers maintain that brutal family any more ? THe kind of suppression would pave the way another 89 style insurgency in the near future, for sure. I have no doubt about. I THINK srilanken genetics would not learn it from the past. They only focus on surface values, not into sutatinable solutions. Be it regarding economy, education, health or whatever, they would not move towards the progress. Former Minister of Health achieveda lot for the benefit of the masses, but media mafia did not let the news being outreached to the masses. Consequence is people thought, GOOD governance did not achieve much. Horaminiha of the current regime – that 10% Basil was pumping black money in millions into Derana and Hiru TV for their come back.
      .
Entire society is misled by blant lies being breaking news to the same audience over the years. Who has been doing it – Pro-Rajapakshe media owners. Today as had been few decades ago, people are not used to read news papers, their prime source of info has been through TV news.

The foundations for fascist rule were laid by JR Jayawardene in 1978.
Everything that followed pointed to the suppression of legal rights.

People showed their displeasure to the SLPP by boycotting the last Parliamentary election. The voter turnout was poor. Only less than 40% voted.
Over 700,000 ballots were also rejected. This is the official number. I guess the actual number of rejected ballots were around 1 million.
Many MPs “won” on the second ballot. There were massive irregularities and rigging.

    Brilliant.

Can you now tell us as to why Mahinda is celebrating Navaratri nights? Did Modi order him to do so if he ever has to bail out this island?

Gota and goons claim this is a Sinhala/Buddhist country well before Buddha was born yet his brother teaching his sons, wife and his grandchild the goodness or greatness of the celebration of gods representing knowledge/wisdom, wealth and valor in Hindu mythology.

    I am confused.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is amusing that after my comments (appeared on the other page), there are a lot of activities in the Abhayaramaya Temple involving the Rajapaksas.
When prominent Buddhist monks protested against 20A, not a single Rapajapaksa visited Abhayaramaya. Instead, they summoned the protesting Buddhist monks to their feet, to the Presidential Secretariat. This change is incredible.
Even if the Alawaka Yaka or the ghost of Hitler visited Abhayaramaya, the Buddhist monks have to receive, show kindness and say a few words on TV in support of them, which is understandable.
A wide section of the society boycotted the general election or tampered their ballots without the guidance of Maha Sangha, for there are many others whose advice is followed by them.
Anyways, the irreparable harm is done and the fall of Pohottuwa and the rise of a new movement is imminent.

Where is Wimal Sangili Karuppan who wanted to boycott American companies and product?

Will he now protest Pompeo’s visit to this island as you know Prime Minister of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam, Visvanathan Rudrakumaran is still being protected by USA.

Has Wimal stopped demanding Prime Minister Rudra’s deportation?
It appears he has, what a shame.

    Dr Ammr Ali

It is Muslims who want to become Arabs in this country and to separate from others as much as possible. They wanted to dress like Arabs, change the language into Arab, separate Laws, foods, schools etc & finally to make SL a part in a Islamic Caliphate. They even couldn’t tolerate Buddha statues, so started to destroy them. They couldn’t understand where they are living. Blaming Sinhalese Buddhists for every thing, they started killing Sinhalese & Tamil Catholics. First comments appeared here after Easter bombing was it is Buddhists killing Catholics. There peaceful religion promises material & sexual gifts for killing non believers. So believers think they can bring peace by killing others. This, we can see every where in the world.

Hakeem unified all Muslims MPs and went Mecca. Came back and promised to support Old King on his Coup but voted against the Coup. Then he brought down the Yahapalanaya by all 22 Muslim MPs and ministers resigning together. Now he again pretended his support to opposition, but voted to government for 20A. When the reporters asked why SLMC supported Dutugamunu Party, Hakeem said my colleges fear because Tamils are on the North of Kalmunai. By their unity, Muslims are keeping UNP and SLFP on the North and South poles. Same way they are keeping Tamils and Sinhalese too on the North-South poles.
Vaalaiththodam Jr, not listening to Ranil advice, has already killed his future. Now he is learning who Hakeem and Rishard (, only if he has more than two weeks of memory) are. Hakeem had a fake Central Committee meeting to decide if his Muslims MPs voted 20A have to be dismissed. During Vaalaiththodam Sr’s time (30 years ago) without any interference he decided to split Kalmunai as it has grown up for keep as one unit. Muslim MPs argued the split will give the administration of one unit to Tamils so they refused to release the throat tight control on the Kalmunai Tamils.

  • 5
    2

So after that meeting now Hakeem says the Muslims MPs voted 20A has explained to him that Royals having dictatorial hold over Lankawe will prevent Tamils getting a unit in Kalmunai. For that racial explanation, Hakeem should have fire all of them immediately, but ugly racist Hakeem only praised them. These pretentious patriotic nationalistic Muslims parties are explaining that to keep Tamils out of Kalmunai Local Council, they sold the entire country to dogs. Do you think Sinhalese will believe this racists’ word that they want to live with Sinhalese peacefully that is why they voted with Sinhala Buddhist Extremists. That is why Sinhalese fear the Hakeem & Company will not stop Arabian conversion with Kalmunai as the next like Kattankudy. (In the PCoI Hisbullah was asked why did he planted Dates in Kalmunai, he asked back, “without planting Dates you want me to plant Rambutan (A south East Asian fruit flourish in up country from British time)?”. This Hakeem another time told Tamils are showing their beggar wound to beg. Hakeem is telling “we cut the nose to punish the face”. SJB saying they have arranged to fire their rule breakers. But Hakeem, who accepted the explanation want his MPs allowed back SJB. The Theory under this seems to be Vaalaiththodam Sr. took a decision against Muslims in Kalmunai so they want to go against Vaalaiththodam Jr. in 20A.

  • 4
    2

Vaalaiththodam Jr. is not concerned on this Hakeem’s betrayal, but some SJB members are. Sumanthiran said unless Muslim leadership take action on its members for supporting 20A, Tamils cannot have any more faithful relationship with Muslims parties. This is matter has to be taken into count by IC community, who insist minorities should be unified together for them to talk with Government about minorities’ problem. This is a problem minority for being untied together. When government is using all monitory, military and Minister Post resources to divide minorities, then minorities cannot be unified. Remember, here we are talking about the notorious politics unity. But, other than any other communities, Muslim has shown endurance to stay together in religious matters. But when politics comes, Muslims leaders are perceived in the Island as the least sincere group. We know communal, racial competition started with the 1915 Perahera stampede. That incidence is no indicator of taut or tension existed between Muslim and Sinhalese, before or after the incident. It was Tamils, who brought the end to the rivalry by approaching the British parliament. Some contemporary Muslims are not happy with Tamils for that end. So from 1948, Muslim leaders were willing to maintain extra cozy relationship to punish Tamils, who were neutral on 1915 communal riots

  • 4
    2

Even in Aluthgama riots, it was only a Tamil DIG, Indran, controlled rioters against Muslims peasants and he was dismissed by Chitanta government for that. Because of this biased relationship Muslims leaders were able to hold with Sinhala Extremists, they held substantial share in the governmental ruling from 1948. The past ruling political parties have been either Sinhala UNP or Sinhala SLFP, until the last election. But irrelevant of the Sinhala Part ruling, Muslims had steady partnership in the governments. So the ruling government has been always the same Muslim leadership + any one Sinhala Party, (UNP or SLFP) Sinhala government. This policy less attitude of Muslim politicians gave an upper hand in deciding which Sinhala Party could rule, especially when the winning party majority was marginal enough to form government. Situation became more threaded when PR system was introduced and still tighter when the section limit reduced from 12.5 to 5%. So after 1994, in all governments Muslim MPs had high dictating ability, even at the time Old King managed to cross 75 Opposition MPs to his party. So the newly formed Slap Party used the aged old technique to overcome the Muslim Leaderships’ control in the parliament with less than 25 MPs.

  • 4
    2

In the 1950s and 1960s Sinhala government were having problems in passing laws against Tamils because of S 29 of the Soulbury constitution and the Privy Council’s position as the final legal authority of the Island, Ceylon. Sinhala Leaders went to the Sinhala Buddhist and appealed for a mandate to get rid of the Soulbury constitution and rescue the Sinhala Population from Dominion Status. To milk the needed 2/3 majority from Sinhala Buddhists, Sinhala Intellectuals had to infuse a high dose of racial venom to Sinhala Buddhists. That practically split the Tamil & Sinhalese permanently on racial lines. In 1972, Successfully, Sinhala Intellectuals got rid of the Soulbury constitution and plunge the country into dire situation. War started. These newly developing situations gave upper hand to Muslims as their service in Tamil was highly useful in war against Tamils. Muslims leaders pretended they were highly patriotic than Sinhala Buddhists while converting Kattankudy & Kalmunai into Arabian Peninsula. Their dominance in politics put them in economically advantage position, i.e. the last community in economic and education, in one generational, became most educated and affluent community in the country. That turned out to be disadvantage too, now Sinhala intellectuals went to Sinhala Buddhists and asked for an absolute majority for curb the Muslims’ dominance in the country.

  • 3
    2

Sinhala Buddhists gave the needed 2/3 majority to Royals and they formed the government without the support of the Muslims King makers. When Sinhala Buddhists descended towards Royal for permanent leadership, they looked for loyalty too. They wanted to shed the disloyal Muslim leadership from any association with them. Some Muslims forecasted the current negative situation to arise in time. But, most of them think that they could hold permanently by party switching between SLFP-UNP without any loyalty forever. They seem to have calculated they in two party dominance Sinhala Buddhists would always need them and there won’t be any alternative this situation. Until war when the Sinhala government wanted to prove IC it is not the Sinhala Buddhist are racist, but it is only LTTE is terrorists, by keeping Muslim leadership pampered with money and women. . Muslim blocked Tamils attempt to explain IC that Tamils are most crime free society until Standardization and it is only after that Sinhala Buddhists managed creating Tamils as terrorist. But now Sinhala Buddhists created terrorism in Muslims by pampering them to build Sharia University with 2000 private Islamic lectured from ME countries, during Yahapalanaya time, and have created ISIS in Muslims.

Ameer Ali, did anyone expect anything different ???So sorry for the disappointment. Yes, time and again Muslim politicos, parties and the community blindly lead by these corrupt, have proven that they are carpetbaggers. The community claims this as “living in harmony”, what is actually a symbiotic parasitic opportunism. Did anyone think they cared for Thaj, Dr.Shaffi or Hijaz. Like Richard their turn is yet to come. Worse Lankan history will mark the community and the leaders for ever, as such.
