Journalism A Failed Profession In Sri Lanka

By Suranimala Umagiliya

Recent reports in two Sunday newspapers highlighted updated versions of the investigations into the abduction, torture and assault of journalist Keith Noyahr and murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge the late Editor of The Sunday Leader. Keith Noyahr, of the Nation was abducted on his way home on the 22nd of May 2008 and Lasantha Wickrematunge was murdered on the 8th of January 2009.

Gota

The Sunday Times of 15th of April 2018 in an article by the Cafe Spectator refers to Dr Rajitha Senaratne, stating that two Defence Ministers ie. Sri Lankan and Ukrainian, signed the infamous MiG deal. The report goes on to state that the FCID had certified copies of the agreement to purchase the MiG aircraft which were signed between Bellimissa Holdings, a BVI Company and Sri Lanka Air Force with T.S. Lee of DS Alliance from Singapore featuring as a key go between. T.S. Lee through DS Alliance featured in the previous MiG sales to Sri Lanka.

The tenor of the article in the Sunday Times is to pinpoint two important issues. The first being that Dr Rajitha Senaratne was way off the mark with his facts and the second being the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge continues to be used conveniently for political gain. The intrepid Editor’s murder was due to his knowledge of the inside story of the MiG purchases has also been questioned.

The FCID seemingly has reported to Court through a B report that T.S Lee is considered a suspect in this case. T.S Lee being a businessman is within his rights to sell to any bidder provided the end user certificates are not erroneous. It is the Air Force and by such extension the Defence Ministry of Sri Lanka and the the Government of Sri Lanka that is criminally liable. The Ukraine government is on record that they did not sell any aircraft to the Government of Sri Lanka. This would mean the earlier purchases of MiG were also not Government to Government sales.

Be that as it may, the report in the Sunday Times confines it to showing the two issues but begs further questions. That being to pin the liability not only on Udayanga Weeratunga, who was Ambassador to Russia at the time but on such person who had the ultimate authority to sanction the tainted purchase of MiG aircraft on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka.

It is a publicly known fact that the former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was in office at the time of such deal filed action in the Mt Lavinia Courts, a defamation action against the late Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge and his Sunday Leader claiming a colossal amount. It is also a publicly known fact that the former Secretary of Defence in his evidence in Chief and Cross Examination under oath, stated that the MiG purchases were a Government to Government deal between Sri Lanka and Ukraine. He justified his action in public interviews to the BBC with Chris Morris and in the Hard Talk programme saying he did the “right thing” by filing action and would wish the Sunday Leader to fold up. The two interviews are yet on You Tube.

It is a publicly known fact that the court record in this case has mysteriously gone missing from the Mt Lavinia Court. What is not known publicly is whether the authorities have initiated an investigation as how this record went missing. It is a serious crime which needs a proper investigation to prevent future repetitions. Investigators routinely would assess as to who had a motive to illegally prise out such record. At best this would have been a futile effort as the lawyers from both sides would have certified copies of the proceedings. Most certainly the lawyer defending Lasantha Wickramatunge would have one.

The Sunday Observer of 15.04.2018 carried a detailed and exhaustive report in to the abduction, torture and assault inflicted on the Nation journalist Keith Noyahr in 2008. The report details the trail of telephone conversations between various Army Officers including Gen Kapila Hendawitharne, Maj Gen Amal Karunasekera and Major Bulathwatte. Bulathwatte has received his call at a location in Dompe alleged to be the scene of the crime. The telephone records go further. Lalith Allahakkoon the Editor of the Nation at the time Keith Noyahr was abducted calls President Rajapaksa who in turn calls his brother, the serving Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa who calls (the civilian as per the explanation of Gotabaya ) Gen Hendawitharne who then calls Maj Gen Karunasekera who finally calls Bulathwatte. Noyahr in his statement to the CID refers to hearing one of the abductors answering a call saying “yes sir, yes sir” before being released. All these calls are after 11 pm. Meanwhile ex DIG Anura Senanayake (presently in remand in connection with the Wasim Thajudeen murder) too is in the area after receiving instructions from Gotabaya Rajapaksa together with DIG Sisira Mendis, presently the security adviser to President Maithripala Sirisena.

Former Defence Secreatary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has filed action in court to prevent his arrest in connection with an inquiry into the construction of DA Rajapaksa foundation. Former IGP Wickremaratne has done the same in the Lasantha Wickrematunge murder investigation.

The investigations into the disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda and the murder of Rugby player Wasim Thajudeen have been off the radar lately. The assault on Editor Upali Tennekoon has suffered a similar fate. Upali Tennekoon at the time of his assault was fronting a newspaper that favoured former President Rajapaksa. There were suspicions that Upali Tennekoon who was attacked a couple of weeks after the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge was to deflect a finger being pointed to the Rajapaksa government over the late Editors murder. Tennekoon at an identification parade has recognised Premananda Udalagama who was from the Army intelligence as one who assaulted him. Lasantha Wickrematunge murder also has been reported to Court as an Army Intelligence operation as with the Keith Noyahr abduction, assault and torture.

There has not been any inquiry of worth into the abduction, assault and torture into the complaint made by journalist Poddala Jayantha.

Journalists in Sri Lanka have woefully failed to hold persons accountable for murder, abduction, assault and torture of brethren practising their profession but instead are unashamedly promoting such ilk back in to high office.

Srilankan Journalists are dogs waiting to pick up scraps other than they have no other purpose.
Rajaballas have stolen state wealth , so the jurnos are there to pick up the scraps.
They are dogs should be treated like stray dogs.

This is way off the mark!
It is Bondscam Ranil who has US handlers and other CORRUPT POLITICIANS who are blocking investigations in to US citizen Gota, who is the Manchurian Candidate of the CIA in Sri Lanka.

While some journalists are corrupt it is ridiculous to blame journalists for the lack of progress in the murders committed by US citizen Gota who is protected by his country’s secret services and Bondscam Ranil

The need for removing RW from the leadership of UNP is essential to move forward . A suitable UNPer ( with no files) need to be nominated to proceed with CLEAN UP.
Clean up and remove the garbage for once and for all.
Then only this country can move forward.
These mega thieves need to be banged up . Who will be suitable to do this JOB from the UNP??
The Parasitic Mahanayakes need a lesson or two on the 10 Precepts of Lord Buddha to put the record straight. This is for them firstly.

        10 Precepts: to Refrain from:
        Taking life
        Stealing
        Sexual misconduct
        Lying
        Using intoxcants
        Gossiping
        Praising oneself
        Meanness
        Aggression
        Slandering.
” TURNING A BLIND EYE SUPPORTING CRIMINALS ” Is not in the Buddha Teachings.

Until then the country is festered with ” Incurable Wounds.”

No any academic achievement and qualification to hold any position.
Unfortunately Sirisena and Ranil failed to incarcerate this man for life .
This perpetrator has committed numerous crimes.

GoTa was educated enough to become a Gas Station Assistant in a run-down neighbourhood in US. What else you need for someone to be president of Sri Lanka. As long as Bodu Bala Sena and corrupt Buddhist monks are behind, there is no doubt this White Van Goon and notorious murderer will be the president of Sri Lanka.

Maharage, a person who has enough humility to do a minimum wage job as much as the capability to end a 30 year old war is the type of person who should be at the helm of any country, it is appalling when people like you think a person’s character, capability and education is linked to a job category. Modi was a tea boy at one time, did you know that?

Well said Wannihami. Willy Brandt was an illegitimate child, Harold Wilson the son of a high street dispenser, Thatcher the daughter of a greengrocer, John Major the son of an unemployed trapeze artiste, but all became leaders.

“a person who has enough humility to do a minimum wage job as much as the capability to end a 30 year old war is the type of person who should be at the helm of any country,”

Come on, Dr Gota (DSc) and his brother Dr Mahinda (LLD + PhD X 3) told media immediately after the end of war that without Hindia, Sri Lanka would not have won the war and Dr Mahinda said they fought Hindia’s war.

The irony was that both VP and Dr Mahinda (Sri Lanka) worked hard for Hindia.
Hindians paid for Dr Mahinda’s presidential victory in 2005.

Well I don’t mind your fantasies however I object to you believing them.

          Wannihami,
It is Sarath Fonseka who crafted and executed strategic moves to end the 30 yeaer ealam war. GoTa left the war at its most critical stage and migrated to US as a refugee where I met him while working as a Gas Assistant. Again when the war was on its winning stretch, GoTa was brought back by MaRa to steal the credit. Finally, ungrateful MaRa and GoTa arrested SF and put him in jail for fear of being a threat to their hold on power. What else you need to know GoTa’s career. Refer to trail of killings from Matale Mass Grave to Lasantha’s killing for details of GoTa’s career

From 20/011/2005 to 07/01/2015 who had ruled the country ? who has taken all the credit for all the positive aspect of their achievements ? is it remotely possible for any other person/group to commit such ghastly crimes in a raw ? on the other hand who would harm /kill known anti Rajapakse journalists ?

Gota remains Scot-free due to various reasons
        1) Both Ranil and MY3 are dead scared of possible teribution
        2) Most of the SL judiciary are the direct beneficiaries of the notorious clan..

GoTa the murderer has already been tipped for next President of this Banana Republic. Sinhala Buddhists inspired by Racial ramblings of Mahavamsa of Maharana are in full euphoria about this Cardboard Hero becoming next President.

Mysterious killings, abductions, torturing of innocent civilians, journalists, political opponents are just a clear and sound harbinger to how a dangerous dictator and mass murderer like GoTa would behave in the future. If it is the wish of gullible Sinhala Buddhists in Sri Lanka, no one can help them and save Sri Lanka from becoming the next Killing Fields.

The fundamental requirement to be the head of this Buddha land is simply kill some Tamils or Muslims and carry out a propaganda Tamil Terrorists are almost there to massacre Sinhalese or Islamist Terrorists are almost there to eradicate Sinhalese from this Buddha land. So Lord Buddha is on the right hand, Threat of terrorism against Sinhalese on the left hand. If and when they need India & USA as enemies of Sinhalese and Russians & Chinese are saviours of Sinhalese. For most Sinhalese, Lasantha is an LTTE ally, Noyar is LTTE himself. Mahinda & Gota are hero’s because they killed to LTTE Terrorists. Killing LTTE terrorists is not a crime in this Buddha land because Lord Buddha was killed by our heros.

Yes, it is the wish of gullible Sinhala Buddhists. If that is a problem for Kallathonis they can get lost. Sinhalayo did not invite you guys to this country. Camels who were allowed to put their heads into the tent coming to tell how this country should be governed.

Who invited the Sinhalese to come and take refuge in this Island 2000 years ago?

Most of them only arrived 400-100 years ago from South India and this includes Blind Eagles and Shenal’s ancestors. Even the Tamil ancestors of Bandaranaicke and Jayawardene arrived in the island in the 1700s

It does not matter when the Sinhalese came to this island, or whether they are really ‘low caste’Tamils as the Tamil diaspora is fond of claiming. What matters is that they are the majority. Accept it or ‘go forth and multiply’

              “on a Sinhalese website.”

When did Colombo Telegraph claimed to be a Sinhalese website?
Even if it is owned by Sinhalese it does not mean “others” cannot comment on it unless the website specifically exclude non Sinhalese from accessing or using it. The comment policy does not exclude anyone on the basis of race, class, religion, language, region, gender, …………………….

Where on earth did you get the idea CT is Sinhalese website?
Is it going to be another Sinhala/Buddhist myth?

” What matters is that they are the majority.”

Does it mean the majority can get away from murder? Haven’t you heard of ‘Tyranny of the Majority’ and the need to protect the minorities from the tyrants? It means you have more stupid people than the rest of the people put together.

Sri Lankan Media, especially Maharaja Group and Hiru are hell bent on attacking the Prime Minister. They are not interested in true relevant news but only on promoting hatred against the PM. Unfortunately Sri Lankan media do not know media freedom means. Most of the media organizations do not Fact Check news before they put it out but at the same time they promote attacks against the PM. Derana on the other hand on their website do not allow comments by readers if the news is about Mahinda or JO/SLPP (mostly). Its time the Government of Sri Lanka brings laws to punish such organizations putting out or even promoting Fake News.

        Jim Softy

You would have been told in school “supporting and speaking for the Devil is not a crime” but ” involving directly in the crimes a Devil does certainly is a crime”.

In that sense TNA only supported and spoke for the LTTE which by itself is not a crime. You have to then prove they got actively involved. At least prove they bought weapons and supplied to the LTTE and show direct proof. If not it is merely a speculation by which you cannot even arrest leave alone punish the TNA

The journalists I have come to know frequently wanted to bring out the truth and were willing to take considerable risks. I may point to the reports of DBS Jeyaraj and Qadri Ismail of state terror in the East during the mid-1980s, when reporting the truth was becoming increasingly difficult and frightening. They had then the backing of the Island’s editor Vijitha Yapa. I could point to several such instances in the subsequent years.

We should not blame the journalists for the failure of our elite, the civil society and particularly our academics and bankrupt universities. We have many contemporary reports of academics going to prison and suffering torture or humiliation in Turkey, Iran, China, Egypt, Hong Kong and even Singapore. In India, universities take the lead in dissent. The contrast with us speaks loud.

In this country the universities confer doctorates to war criminals.

What profession has not failed in Sri Lanka ? They cannot perform in anything without giving it a bad name.

Journalism is a highly respected profession all over the whole world . Whether it is a failed profession in Sri Lanka is a big question. Every law abiding citizen of Sri Lanka would want to have answers to the murders and abductions etc mentioned in the article.

Don’t worry folks, all these Ballige Putha’ s mouth piece news papers will go on putting the Thieves and murderers in the Pedestal just because they have to sing for their supper , the stolen money speaks for the murderous family to keep them Smile and be happy.
They will never come back to power.
All a humbug to fool the people.
They haven’t got any legs to stand let alone becoming future President or PM.
They the Rajaballas just throw their swindled money to the Cooly dogs the journalists prostitutes.
They keep, their aspirations alive as long as they live.
Theyre finished just like our Present President.
Let them carry on licking their wounds which are festered.

Suranimala Umagiliya is rather harsh in “Journalism A Failed Profession In Sri Lanka”
Let us not forget that it was journalists who brought out wrong doings – for example the Lasantha, Prageeth, Thajudeen cover-ups, recent expose’ of the Welikade prison massacre and so on. These journalists have to overcome ig-journalists of the Dayan J ilk.
At one stage, journalists of ‘Uthayan’ (Tamil newspaper) were literally pulped by the then NP Governor GA Chandrasiri. They weathered the brutal onslaughts.
The failure in SL is ‘Law & Order’.

gota will never win, even he get a chance to run. In the first place who is going to back him as a candidate SLPP wont that is Basils party, he did not even get a chance to appear on the stage in local election campaign, he (and DJ) was not on the stage for last May day (Basil organised). in 2016 May day those two were very prominent on the stage.

UNP at present has a very high chance with RW as candidate and SLFP MS is likely to run but there is a chance worse case scenario Gota might be lucky to be the candidate. But MR wont be able to back Gota,

Even Gota contest on SLPP (which is vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery unlikely they will not get 50% because Muslims, Tamils and Christian Sinhalese will not vote for Gota he may ge around 30%. People voting for Gota is likely to place RW as the second choice but those who dont vote for Gote as the first choice will not place him as second choice. So RW is likely to win in the second count.

There is a steady decline in MR support base in the last 3 elections, UNPs sins have been partially forgiven by the NCM, and Bond issue will be no issue in the next election. We can see the effect of MRs over confident foolish NCM in the PC elections.

Though this murderer has high hopes there are other aspirants who will surface next year. Gota will be worn off by that time.

You said the truth. CIA funded NGO – web site says that. It is a fight against majority of the majority of 69%. versus the superior christians, Tamils (again christians) and muslims. I read Paksithan Outlawed Ahmedia. why Sri lanka cannot outlaw Sunni and Shia both. then the risahd Bathiuddin also goes down. Even Saudi arabia who are sunnis kill Shia. Why do we have t give them rigths.

I thought on the 8th of January 2015,SL had seen the light at the end of the very long tunnel of suffering and hardships.
But,alas, that was a mere dream.
The current GoSL too is being run badly. The previous rulers who committed crimes are still free and enjoying the loot. It is a really very sad story. Nightmare continues
    God save Mother Lanka!!!

Even the foreign press knows tht English media in Sri lanka is paid by foreign spy agencies. We very well know that english medium papers in Sri lanka pro-christian, pro tamil etc., Sinhala news papers do not tell the truth to the public too. Ithink Mahinda Rajapakse gave them the best response. chased them out and for others who at a time of a crucial war, who defended LTTE were beaten “homba kedenda”. Sri lanka had to have retroactive legislation. to defend the country from those journalsits. Now for Suranimal UMagiliya is trying to what Ranil and govt of bank thieves di dnot do. I heard parliament had enought thefts to hide. IT looks Suranimal Umagiliya also want some extra cash. Ask Palimentarians if you do not have anything to report (I kmow that is not the objective) YOu are trying present the Govt of Bank robbers for the next elelction. Even now, some westerncountries had asked to buy good from them saying they would supply it almiost free below cost of production. Parliamentarians had said NO, NO, charge us more “that is OK. give us commis”.

Yes, the unfiar thing is CBK, A promoter of 31% is superior than the Majority of the Majority 69% (as base of view of CPA) says, als bought MIGs. That is not questioed. when you weapons or military hardware, for sure, commis come the other way. That is not a quarion. the question is why no govt has a authority to handle those purchases. Even Horapalayana was like that, Orumiththa givt would have lik that if they existed. Who knws who comes after NCM. None of 225 are honest. they look for opportunities. Probably Suranimal Umagiliya is looking for Diplomat post. that is how the SL govts work. In Africa, Zambia is called African – Sri lanka. why CBK was called CHORA RUJINA. Ranil and Maithripala Sirisena came to clean it, are they clean except for power ? How about John amaratunga, Kiriella, Rajitha Senarathne, Mangala Samaraweera who gets grants from MCC, Fertilizer contracts, then rice contracts, Paddy had been sold at far bedow prices at private mills. there are no GOVT Tender boards. It is all by phone saying I GAve it to you. Why di d not Ranil arrest Udayanga Weeratunga who is aUkranina citizen I heard.

What this articel says, next govt should prosecute Ministry Secretaries for everything. So, for the bond scandle, Ranil’s ministry will be prosecuted, for Ravi the LIAR finance ministry Secretary will be Prosecuted. Malik Samrawickrama had been said to some blunders in order to sign a FREE trade agreement with Singapore. that is just ahed of the signing the agreement, Singapore had invited the group who discussed it for a training session at their expense. singpore also had calculated the profits for them for $1500 million or some figure like that. So, the Malik samrawickrama’s Secretary will be prosecuted. John amaratunga gave a tourism advertisign contract to CNN (americans go to MExico and latin america and they do not coem this far excpt for Spy work). so his secretary will be prosecuted. There are so many ministers like. How about Rajitha Senarathen who did not go to FCID because he knew both the prewsident and the PM.

Amidst a plethora of statements what is of significance is in the last paragraph. Leave alone journalism, we find terrible failures in all professions in Sri Lanka. Even in the Wasim Thajudeen case, the doctor who gave the original medical opinion to the effect that it was an accident was finally dealt by the medical council though the adequacy of the measure taken is questionable. The underlying factor degrading the professions are the craze for money and power coupled with the fear instituted by the powers that may be. Two persons who held the position of Chief Justice was indirectly threatened by the powers that may be using Parliamentary privilege, one was an indirect reference and the other was direct attack. Above all there is no political will to build Sri Lanka as a society and its institutions.

In the last News Line – Maharaja Media TV discussion which was anchored by Faraz and the other participant Rusiripala Tennekone, the topic was Prorogation of the Parliament. But out of the 30 minute discussion, within 9 minute it became a show to attack Ranil Wickremasinghe the PM. What a shameful media Maharaja TV has become. This is another good example how the SL media is being made to fail.

Yes, Lankawe Media published a lot about when New King pretend like releasing another innocent, Sivayogan Ginnivan from prison as the one attempted him but he was pardoning him. But the entire Tamil community begged this iron hearted person to release Anadasuthahran. Again he played popularity game on that. He thinks releasing him will affect his Pro Racist Image that he is attempting to build, with association of Colombo Media, to beat Old Royal and Ranil in the next year election. This man is not ready to release that orphan children’s father. But Sampanthar is camping in North that he is going to bring Secret Solution from this man. What a joke.

The very question CT has raised, “Journalism is a failed profession in
Sri Lanka, answers the question. It has not failed. CT is able to raise
the question only because journalism is quite active though some
may look at it with a jaundiced eye.

I do agree that politicians have not been taken to task as much as
they should have been over national issues. Even the death of Lasantha
Wickremetung is one such case. A minister who has NO credibility is
embarking on his own course to achieve political ends.

If Gotabaya Rajapaksa is responsible, of course hang him. That is after
an impartial investigation and a free and fair trial. Don’t hang him for
the wrong thing. He has a lot of blood in his hands and should be charge
    for it.

Who killed Lasantha. Short of saying who, I would only say if you are with
the government and shed crocodile tears, nothing will happen. You go
scott free. That is the truth. Don’t blame it on journalism CT.

      Nelson Moses
I agree with you totally , where would we be if not for CT.
I applaud for their courage in exposing the ills of happenings in SL.
They are of course the best , ” one in a million ” of the SL Journalists .
Negative Comments made about the SL journalism applies to majority of the Journalists who writes garbage to fatten their pockets with blood money received from their master rogues of SL.
They will not survive for ever.
They have no morality as a journalist but vultures of the profession which can be compared to PROSTITUTION.
