Morals & Ethics Take A Nosedive In Sinhala-Buddhist Sri Lanka

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

As a Sri Lankan first, as a member of the predominant ethnic community – Sinhalese, as a follower of the Buddhist philosophy and as a grandmother, I have taken it upon myself to address the youth and young adults of Sri Lanka, amongst them – the future leaders of Sri Lanka – through this open letter, as I consider it incumbent upon those of us now in our 50s and beyond to advise and do our utmost, to guide those of you who have obviously been misguided and led astray by the unethical and unpatriotic, with selfish and devious agendas.

Dear people, for 70 years, we as a people have been used, abused and made fools of by politicians, irrespective of the political party they represent. Today, you, your parents and even your grandparents are used, abused and fooled products of those self-serving politicians.

To start with, over the years, the quality of our sacrosanct free education system has been tampered with and made to deteriorate by successive governments to such an extent that it now focuses ONLY on academic qualifications. This defacing of the education system has been cleverly designed to produce academically qualified fools who are easily hoodwinked, brainwashed and are unable to think independently for him/herself. And those of you who have fallen victim to this phenomenon, are the primary manipulative tools of the devious politician.

Our education structure no longer encompasses the crucial areas of ‘reading comprehension’ and ‘Ethics’- the moral principles on how one should behave decently, honorably and respectfully in society. One who holds only an academic qualification sans reading comprehension skills and ethics/integrity, is doomed to fail and is of no use to society at large. In fact, such a person is more of a curse than a blessing to society.

Unfortunately, most of those engaged in the teaching profession lack ethics and reading comprehension skills themselves or are unaware of such. So, how can such a teacher teach their students something they have no knowledge of hence don’t practice it themselves? Who is there to teach the teacher?

My interaction on social media has been a stark eye-opener for me as a journalist and a writer on sociopolitical issues, as I have come across a cross section of society I wouldn’t otherwise meet. Therein I have found, those belonging to varying social strata, from the well-rounded educated and ethical to the common street thug. Hence social media is a useful platform for those of us focussed on evolving sociopolitical issues in Sri Lanka.

Besides networking decently, social media is also a platform where people display their true colours or their dark side without realising it. The cunning amongst them hide behind fake names and profiles to launch their racist and sexist attacks on the other, and the foolish do it under their own names and faces. These are the people who are referred to as ‘trolls’ on social media. The majority of these trolls are ill bred and uncouth men with a handful of their female counterparts included, but, the males are in the majority. This is not at all surprising in a society where a woman cannot walk freely in public or use public transport without being harassed by sexually depraved men.

These trolls are basically cowards suffering from acute and varying forms of inferiority complexes who take cover behind a phone or a computer to attack the other. If you ask any one of them to meet you physically and repeat to your face what they do hiding behind a keyboard, you can bet your bottom dollar they never will. I know this from experience. They wear masks in society to hide their true selves, yet inadvertently expose their dark side on social media. Hence you will never know the real person behind the mask when you meet them face to face but on social media, you will.

Amongst these trolls are professionals such as Doctors, Lawyers etc., including Journalists who will even sell their souls for a free laptop or less. Their behavior brings them down to the level of the uncouth, ill-bred common thug on the streets. Hence the medical, legal and journalism which were once amongst professions which regarded ethics as sacrosanct, is no more!

These trolls, including the above mentioned ‘Professionals’ resort to using what is referred to as “raw filth” in their racist and sexist attacks on the other or when they disagree with the views expressed by others, simply because they lack the intelligence and integrity to disagree decently and respectfully. Most of them are also parents of impressionable young children. Hence through their conduct, what is the example they are setting for their children to emulate?

It is all well and good to be armed with academic qualifications – degrees, PhDs etc., but, if you lack ‘Integrity'(morality, courtesy and decency), your academic qualifications are of no use, because, a decent society will judge you first NOT by your academic qualification, but, by your conduct in society. Hence a ‘Professional’ and others who lack integrity ends up spitting on his/her own face, their families, schools, religion, the profession he/she is engaged in and last but not least, the ethnic community you identify yourself with and as a Sri Lankan.

Further, unsurprisingly, I also discovered by going through the profiles of these trolls on social media that 99.9% of them were Sinhala-Buddhists. Now, who set the example for such people to emulate over the past eighteen years, ably assisted by sections of the Buddhist clergy? A youth who was 18 years old in 2005 is today around his/her mid 30s, and it is amongst them and those much younger and little older who have become the ethically depraved and destructive generation of Sri Lankans.

The above mentioned generation of Sinhala-Buddhists will eventually lead to the destruction of the Sinhalese as an ethnic community because they will breed their own kind. Therefore, the threat to the Sinhalese DOES NOT come from those of other ethnic groups or religions, BUT, it comes from within the Sinhalese and amongst the Sinhalese, with the examples set by racist and bigoted Sinhala-Buddhist politicians, and many amongst the Buddhist clergy.

For a country to develop economically, it first and foremost needs an educated, principled and ethical populace. Hence a country like ours CANNOT and will NEVER develop economically and socially as long as its people are unprincipled. Because, it is from amongst such people – the citizens of Sri Lanka – that politicians are elected to represent us and lead our country.

Therefore as long as the majority of this country remains gullible, unethical and unprincipled, we will continue to have unethical and unprincipled politicians as our political leaders. Remember, the person you vote for is a reflection of who you are. If you are unethical and unprincipled yourself, you will chose to vote for an unethical and unprincipled candidate at any election, irrespective of the political party.

Last but not least, I lay the blame for this societal degradation in Sri Lanka, fairly and squarely at the feet of our Buddhist clergy, save a handful. The majority of our Buddhist clergy, starting with the Mahanayakes downward are guilty of violating the Vinaya Pitaka. Their first violation was segregating themselves according to the repugnant caste system the Buddha totally denounced, and from their onwards, the rot started.

Morally, the main and only reason a man or woman choses Buddhist ordination is to live a simple and meditative life and ultimately attain nirvana and in the meantime, teach the Buddhist laity the philosophy of the Buddha- the Dhamma. Today, how many amongst those referred to as ‘Buddhist monks’ behave and live the morally righteous life? How many of these ‘monks’ know and understand the Buddha’s teachings or reflect it in order to teach the laity? How can they teach what they do not know?

Instead, they have adopted a self-serving pseudo religion called “Buddhagama” (‘Agama’ means religion as in Hinduism, Christianity and Islam) concocted by their predecessors aeons ago and continue to propagate it amongst the gullible Sinhalese, instead of teaching what they should be rightfully teaching the laity – the Dhamma, which makes absolutely no reference to a religion called “Buddhagama”.

These pseudo ‘Buddhist monks’ are the primary cause of the morally bankrupt Sinhala-Buddhist laity of Sri Lanka, for they have led the laity astray with lies and deceit. And, if the right-thinking educated Buddhists of this country don’t take it upon themselves to take these pseudo ‘Buddhist monks’ to task and stop them in their destructive tracks, right now, they will continue to contribute to the ultimate destruction of the Sinhalese as an ethnic community.

Given the moral-lows Sri Lanka’s society has dropped to, it will take nothing less than a righteous ‘Benevolent Autocrat’ to cleanse our country of the societal scourge that has taken hold, which is the primary impediment to the development of our country. This is the only option for the greater good of the future generations of Sri Lanka!

The benevolent Autocrat isn’t Gota R. I am not sure that there is one in the majority race.
Sharmini S can contest for the next Presidential Election.
We could see a better country within 5 Years.

      Dear Ms Serasinghe,
Thanks very much for the current piece. I think you you have articulated it as no others. You have focused on the essential aspects of practising buddhism in today s srilanka.
      .
Each time visiting my home country, I become very allegic not being able to express what I feel about the way how blind the people have been misled by unconventional buddhist practises today than those days. As one who lives abroad for such a long time, I can see it cleary that buddhism has now only being caught by sivuru wearing hypocrites.
      .
Most of the men hidden behind SAFRON ROBEs but being worshiped by extremist politicians (Rajapakshes and their back lickers)are either psychologically sick or homosexuals. I am no against LGBT right but vehemently against those abuse lanken buddhism being pseudo monks for their practises. Uduwe Dhammalooka is one of them and several others are known to many today. And some of them are born extremists. We can easily judge by their behaviours on the screen. One of the worst is now kept in Prison going by his criminal records. There is one another is yet scot free, in that Mangalaaramaya temple in EAST province. Impunity they enjoy as monks is the other advantage, whatever the high crime they would committ can be understated so long they wear the SIVURU:
      :
I am in full agreement with you particularly about the paragraphs in which you have clearly stated the way how today#s lankens practise the BUDDHAGAMA today.
      .
None of us can keep on arguing on a religion since it is a belief. However the levels of lanken buddhism has been brought, is speechless to me.

        Ms Serasinghe,

You have said it “as is” directly without taking cover in/behind anything.

Strangely enough, it comes off as an emotional piece but appeals to the intellect than to the emotions.

        A rare feat! Thanks.

I’m not too sure if Lankans/humans will ever change …………….. all we can do is try to usher in the post-gullible age ….. humanity/Lankans have gone through several phases ……… and a post-gullible age in Lanka is a distinct possibility. :))

from the Dhammapada Verses 307 and 308:-
“Those who put on the Saffron Robe, but remain ill-mannered and undisciplined,
are dragged down by their Evil Deeds”
“It is better for an Undisciplined Monk to swallow a red-hot Ball of Iron,
Than to Live on the Charity of the Devout”

      Dear Ms. Sharmini Serasinghe,

RE: Morals & Ethics Take A Nosedive In Sinhala-Buddhist Sri Lanka

“As a Sri Lankan first, as a member of the predominant ethnic community – Sinhalese, as a follower of the Buddhist philosophy and as a grandmother, I have taken it upon myself to address the youth and young adults of Sri Lanka, amongst them – the future leaders of Sri Lanka – through this open letter, as I consider it incumbent upon those of us now in our 50s and beyond to advise and do our utmost, to guide those of you who have obviously been misguided and led astray by the unethical and unpatriotic, with selfish and devious agendas. “

Thank you. Yes, if every grandmother, mother, aunt, sister, wife, daughter and every grandfather, father, uncle, husband and son, can be educated to guide those who have obviously been misguided and led astray by the unethical and unpatriotic, with selfish and devious agendas, Sri Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah Aethoo, illegally occurred by the Paras can be a better place for ALL Paras.

However, the corrupt have their own agendas. The mean IQ of the Land is 79, and there are plenty of misguided and fooled the land to go around.

What is amazing is that the president who did an illegal and unconstitutional coup is still the president, and his FAKE PM is now the leader of the Opposition in Parliament, and both are at large, and the parliament is NOT prosecuting them.

But the obvious problem is in a society, where “the educated” is given almost no place, she will have no chance. That is crystal clear ot me as one who has been analysing TODAY’s srilanka being out of the country.
      :
Theoretically yes, we could assume the good educated could succeed it, since writers of Shamini Serasinghe articulate the facts as they really are. She would not shy to express the truth as it is. Just compare it as given in current article, no matter what edcuation they possess, whole lot of people today dont respect FACTs. From what they add to Social media, it has already proved. Comments filled with ” raw filth” often insulting the ” mother” if comment content would not meet with their BOXEs.
      :
I would like to take a good example here to make it clear to our CT readership. The best ever example before our eyes is ” Dr. Dayan SILVA Jayathilaka”. From what he has uttered to CT forums, according to him, he should be from a COLOMBO upper class family ( dont forget these are just based on his own verbal diarrhea. But as we know he had the chance to develop himself as a DIPLOMAT during years he worked as a diplomat. Let alone, he sits with pro-extremist groups in the country. His pieces of writings are no better to that of low life Wimal Modawanse (wimal s profile is 1000 times beneath to that of DJ).
      .
SRILANKA is no FRANCE, where a candiate from a small party could win the elections. The french are 1000 times knowledgeble people comapared to to srilankens whose larger majority caught by astrologers /balithowil promoters/hakgediya promoters. And lankens provably suffer from Inferiority complex as no other folks so that they would never be able to see it right.

    Dear Ms. Serasinghe,

While thanking you for the brilliant article and agreeing with you on most points and details articulated there, I cannot agree with the following statement:

“Remember, the person you vote for is a reflection of who you are. If you are unethical and unprincipled yourself, you will chose to vote for an unethical and unprincipled candidate at any election, irrespective of the political party”

When almost all candidates presented to us today are unprincipled and unethical, perhaps, we have no choice, but vote someone from the lot; perhaps, we may have to choose one “pig” stinking less than the rest.

    • 5
      3

      Maharage,

Why must we silently suffer the candidates presented to us? We as the voters have every right to protest and object to a candidate if we don’t deem him/her fit for the job.

We do have a choice if we want one. The problem is with the voter at the grassroots and above. They don’t open their mouths and object. If they do, collectively, we can see a complete change for the better from the current corrupt system where any Tom, Dick, Harry, kassipu and drug dealers are given nominations, made candidates without any background checks and ultimately end up in parliament.

If the voter does not force the change to happen, the politicians are definitely not going to do it.

        Ms Serasinghe,
        .
Why cant ELECTION COMMISSION be powerful enough not allowing any Tom, Dick, Harry, kassipu and drug dealers are given nominations, made candidates without any background checks and ultimately end up in parliament.?
        .
I have no idea the criteria based on nominations, but I do believe, there should be a list filled with inclusion and exclusion criteria.?
        .
As one another commenter questioned above, why do SRILANKENS take exeeding amount of time to drag on with discussions in and out of parliament. And in the end, not even the least is achieved ? Be it regarding nominations of any other areas, they just lag somewhere. What blocks them not being able to do the due timely ?
        :
Not even modern day Ethiopia (once upon a time only it was the poorest in the world) would take that long to get passed any agreements in their parliament.
Today, from flowers to vegetables imported to Europe are from Ethiopia and few other countries in Africa.

“The problem is with the voter at the grassroots and above. They don’t open their mouths and object”

When the grass root is full of idiots from all communities, it is easy for a bad politician to market himself to the targeted voters just how a bad product is marketed on huge scale budgets with supporting lies and there are gullible buyers instantly available. A good politician doesn’t have the budget, other supporting elements, weight of the party or another senior politician, and he doesn’t want to make use of racism to target this group of voters. Unfortunately in SL this group is much larger.

Even if people open their mouths objecting a bad politician, there comes double, triple or more of that number of people to counter object those. So the paid marketing of a bad politician coupled with targeted tactics always wins here

        Sharmini
        Thank you.
Your point about why we as voters should suffer the candidates presented is valid, but that is where the whole problem lies.
Why is the grass root voter unwilling to collectively exercise his/ her initiative to force a change?
Isn’t it because the presented candidate’s mindset exactly fits like a glove with theirs?
Unless they unite as one people cutting across racial, religious ,cultural and language differences, open their minds and are sincere and honest about loudly declaring openly without any reservations or suspicions, they will have to suffer with the imposed unethical and unprincipled candidates.
When voter’s mindset change their polititician will change.

You are correct. Evn then, I say, you have a soft corner for non-buddhists. YOu praise always UNP and their cohorts. YOu never acknowledge the work 225 or the two major parties destrouying the country. buddhism does not say THIS WHAT BUDDHA SAID YOU MUST FOLLOW THIS IF NOT YOU GO TO HELL. What Lord budda said, this is the correct path and this is the wrong path. Buddha did not teach only the nirvana. budda Sais No to Liquor, no to violence. no to lies. Anyway, you never talk about how two major parties destroy the country. Thye privatize education, and health. Sri lanka has 40,000 or so reservoirs. Yet even the water is commercialized. Pornography, HIV AIDS which comes with tourism, male prostitution which will follow LGBTQ will be the norm, Liquor Shops every where. that is all 225 are responsible. YOu say It is Rajapakses and no talk about your UNP. It is no colour. It is everybody. You are taking stupid shots at Buddhism. when the buddhists are only 70%.

      .
If UNP or JVP would do right things, why not to praise ? Even LANKEN extremists group leader- MAHINDA Rajaakshe is up to do good things, we need not to hide it. right ?:
      :
Lanken BUDDHAGAMA which is being practised today is MILEs away from LORD BUDDHA’s teachings
      .
      1) Why lanken monks get easily caught by any unethical steps being played on them by Rajapakshe today ?. Rajakashes abuse the religion for their political surivival. This is now public secret. Just imagine, how big wasteful religious gatherings are seen in his presences today ?
People over 42% of lanken populace struggle for their 3 meals. How wasteful those ceremonies are – Do you think those costs are paid by MEDAMULA private funds ? Parades of buddhist monks are arranged to take part in his meetings, misleading the very same nation.
      .
2). Innocient masses would not have the brain to differentiate it but to take whatever being easily spread through media machines.
Derana TV the key loud speaker RAJAPAKSHE propaganda is a highly abusive media company. They woudl not care what they telecast today. Indian films that for example bring nothing for the HUMAN development of our people are on their TV sender round the clock ?
Who earns millions if not billions through the contracts being made between Derana TV or the like senders and Indian companies ?
Why not LANKEN AUTHORITIES stay MUM on the kind of destructive programs today ?
Just because RAJAPAKSHE allowed them to telecast anything, why cant we STOP if those films are harmful to lanken culture. Most of them contain incidents that could promote CRIMEs in this country. Why cant the RESPONSIBLE authorities work on studying them ? The culture is already well established under the guidance of Rajapakshe brutal rule.
Fans would stand against today, if these would not be telecasted anymore… Instead of TALK SHOWs that could bring MORE awareness but MONARCHIAL INDIAN SERIES ? why why why ?

    Ms. Sharmini Serasinghe,

You are a rare brave lady who calls a spade a spade. Our education system doesn’t seem to teach that commitment on their professions and integrity are non-negotiable. It is true education provides a better future for an individual, but it is misinterpreted as only a tool to make money – and that is it.

Second reason might be, we, as usual are making a very late entry into the technology as a nation. Majority of these so said, doctors, lawyers, teachers etc are just enjoying their new toys, so abusing is not something unexpected too.

Morals and ethics and good governance is under threat everywhere Ms. Serasinghe. Look at my nation US of A. Can you see any other vile bozo more vile than Trump right now with lies, and swamp politicis and absurd hysteria? Not a single Leader of Sri Lanka can be compared to My President; who has 60 million Baiyas who will adore him even if he shot a person on 5th avenue as he bragged. For them the Russia issue is not an issue; but if it were OBama they would be out with lynch mobs. Some of my rightwing students use the word “libtard” to insult liberals and generally democrats too. So a former student of mine sent me a suggestion to call those Republicans of the same sack cloth who are vile and have no class : “Retardlican”. Please do not get upset ; the world is changing. More and more nations are going on rightwing nationalist path. Brazil, Hungary, USA , Poland and soon other nations are going the fascist path. Hate mongering of illegal immigrants and scaremongering is policy now. You will have to be patient and be aware that the US preaches what it fails to practice. So what good is lamenting about little Sri Lanka when Trump is like this?

    Sharmini Serasinghe;
“Instead, they have adopted a self-serving pseudo religion called “Buddhagama””

I agree with you Whole Heartedly, about ‘Buddhagama’ being a Pseudo Religion.
Unfortunately, Humans have evolved over the last 2,500 years, into a Species that requires an Entity, like a God, to look up to, and ask for Favours from!

If not for ‘Buddhagama’ the Average Sri Lankan, would not know that A person called Siddhartha Gautama, attained Budddhahood, and Lived and Taught all those years ago! In Fact, Sri Lankans would now be worshipping Hindu Gods, a Christian God or an Islamic Prophet!
At least now, Those with only a ‘Little Dust in their Eyes’, would go beyond the ‘Agama’, and try to Understand the ‘Dhamma’ of the Buddha!
Sharmini, we must practise Meththa, Karuna to those who still go to Buddhist Temples, but require the Prop of Something/Someone beyond themselves, and Hope that they would in Time, begin to Understand, ‘What the Buddha Really Taught’!

Thought you might get a laugh from this report. Yes there are evangelical christian whites who even justify the wall this way.. Baiyas for Trump 2020!

An evangelical preacher is using the Bible to defend President Donald Trump’s dream of building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border ― suggesting that even heaven will have a wall around it.

Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Dallas Church in Texas and a longtime Trump supporter, appeared on “Fox & Friends” Sunday to push back on the argument from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democrats that the wall is “immoral.”

“The Bible says even Heaven itself is gonna have a wall around it,” Jeffress said on the show. “Not everybody is going to be allowed in. So if walls are immoral, then God is immoral.”

Chuckle; chuckle Ms. Serasinghe I enjoyed your opinion column but USA has tossed out ethics, good governance and has blatant nepotism and corruption at its core now. The sacred institutions of democracy are under severe assault, it may not survive 6 more years of Trump. Sad to say this but that is the reality now

US President Donald Trump is facing criticism once again for taunting Democrat Elizabeth Warren over her purported Native American heritage.

The following is from BBC. Ms. Serasinghe, Wounded Knee was when White Christian US soldiers massacred women and children and men of Native American blood/ or what we as ignorant Sri LAnkans referred to as Red Indians.

On Sunday, Mr Trump said the senator, a 2020 presidential hopeful, should have filmed a commercial “from Bighorn or Wounded Knee” in “full Indian garb”. Wounded Knee was one of the worst native massacres in US history.Native Americans have decried Mr Trump’s language, calling it insensitive and racist.Mr Trump’s barb was a response to an Instagram live by Ms Warren on New Year’s Eve, just after she announced she was running for president.

I do not know of a single Sri Lankan President or Prime Minister who has spoken the way Trump speaks.

“Morals & Ethics Take A Nosedive In Sinhala-Buddhist Sri Lanka”

Isn’t this statement a contradiction in itself if you call yourself fair minded?

If Lanka is Sinhala Buddhist, that itself shows it to racist, ignoring the Tamils and Muslims, as if they don’t exist, or don’t matter.

If you start your article with this premise where else can it go other than lop-sided, warped conclusions?

More war crimes, more looters in the government, more nepotism, more riots against the minorities, more detention without charges, more disappearances, more impunity for crooks, criminals, ……………… more commissions for the clan, …

‘Given the moral-lows Sri Lanka’s society has dropped to, it will take nothing less than a righteous ‘Benevolent Autocrat’ to cleanse our country of the societal scourge that has taken hold, which is the primary impediment to the development of our country. This is the only option for the greater good of the future generations of Sri Lanka! ‘
Is Sharmini Serasinghe promoting a dictatorship for Sri Lanka? With Ranil Wickremesinghe as Executive MP / benevolent autocrat? She has consistently attacked the majority of voters- Sinhala Buddhist, and made her case to indirectly support the delay of elections by these actions. Now that she appears to be no fan of Ranil Wickremesiinghe, she can now fan discontent and hope people will be duped into buying this!!!….After all ‘in journalism truth is a process’. What ‘truth’? Who’s ‘process’?…..Think if any of the readers are capable!!!

This country has produced enough and more material to write not short articles but books on the unfortunate retardation that it has been subjected to since the introduction of the Presidential system of governance and the author should give serious consideration to same with her inherent skills.
We can go on writing, reading and commenting but there will be nothing we could do to stop this country descending to a state of anarchy, if it not is, already. With our IQ levels on par with countries in Africa, with all the hyperbole about our literacy rates, and our voters choosing actors over much respected politicians to represent them in Parliament, I am most sceptical about there being a drastic change of the status quo.

    Dear Sharmini

Thank you. I just want to say this applies to all the people/languages/religions of SL and not just limited Sinhala Buddhists.

I just want to say the head line for your article is unfair………….Morals & Ethics Take A Nosedive in SL is more appropriate???

If reforms needed for the cleargy this requires a separate article evaluating the case?

Social media is a tool indeed misused by everyone for misinformation ??

Are we saying misinformation in the social media by the so called ‘undeservingly educated’ supporting a segment of the clergy who need reforms??? (this time you are focused on the Buddhists Clergy and their Sinhala speaking base?)

I hear the well meaning intent but the head line is more stereotypical used by all other wrong forces too to undermine the innocent segment of the same too???

May God save Buddhism from the “Sinhala Bawuddhayas” of Sri Lanka! Even if the Buddha himself appears in Sri Lanka today , the “Sinhala-Bawuddhayas” led astray by bloody “Mahana Yakaas” and politicos will murder him! I do not think that there are any real Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

How can you ask God to save Buddhism when Buddhism is non-committal about a God.

Ms Serasinha deserves high praise for having the guts to speak out on a subject that is considered ‘politically incorrect’ in our ‘conservative’ society. No doubt the misinformed & misguided extremists will be howling for her blood or even placing a bounty on her head as radical Muslims did some years ago for Salaman Rashdi.
Some Sinhalese believe that the Sinhala race as the guardians of Buddhism with the religion & the race inseparably entwined. They seem to have a superiority complex (just like the white supremacists) & supported by some Buddhist clergy (same as the evangelical church of middle America who support Trump), have rewritten Buddhism to suit their agenda. It is this ritualistic & distorted Buddhism that is taught in many schools. Buddhist monks are expected to lead a simple life, having left all material things behind in search of ‘Nirvana’ when they were ordained, their principal objective being to provide solace & comfort by spiritual guidance & make us better human beings with compassion & tolerance. Unfortunately, in SL, Buddhist monks in particular, have been exploited by generations of politicians by corrupting them with materiel comforts, such as, luxury vehicles & a comfortable lifestyle (ever herd of Buddhist monks celebrating birthdays?). Therefore, it is refreshing to see Western Monks, such as, Ajan Sumedho, Ajan Chah, & those who reside in Buddhist monasteries in UK (no doubt in other countries too) who follow the teachings of the Buddha to the word, in contrast to the hate mongering, politically motivated thugs who masquerade as Buddhist monks (as well as, those who don’t want to rock the boat) in SL.
It is also appalling to see some so-called educated professionals, living in comfort abroad, share the same bigoted views & a distorted understanding of Buddhism.

The standard of ‘Morals & Ethics’ is on the decline the world over. In this article Sharmini Serasinghe shows her apprehension and angst in Lankan context. She has harsh words on Buddhism as practiced. Thank you Sharmini for initiating this lateral thinking.
To the best of my knowledge Hindus and Christians are averse to self criticism. Dr Ameer Ali is one example of a self-critical Muslim.
    .
Education in general and tertiary education in particular have got commercialised the world over. Up to a point, the ill effects have been contained in countries which retained meritocracy.
    .
All religions have evolved to promote the respective clergy and/or handful of ‘investors’.
Th silver lining is laypersons are not as docile as they were.
The ‘danger’ to all religions are from within.

Sharmini Serasinghe’s bravery is standing alone and talking.

But her allegiance to Ranil UNP cannot be repudiated by that. She supported New King in Jan 2015 election. She supported Ranil in August 2015. They both pledged “No leader, No Commander No Soldier will be prosecuted”. That is the only promise they both are delivering, now. Until recently Ranil kept saving all criminals. When he show the dam is taking too much water and it cannot hold, he offered to New and Old Kings to resign. The Coup is on the background of Ranil not being able to ensure continuous safety for criminals. They all are hypocrites.

It is the crude and unrefined social media took serious charge in reversing the Coup. No laptop, flamboyant Colombo Media, dominated by Derana, Sirasa, Hiru….(It is not a denial of the need of social media bloggers respecting norms.)

Buddhism is only one of the three elements destroying Lankawe. It could be the leading one, but cannot be by a big margin. Other two are Liberal Democracy and Laissez Faire economy. The need of the hour is to reverse the Universal Franchise. Monks have to be moved to educational- Monastery questers. Temples should be placed in the hands of people’s trustees, including Dalada Maligawa. That is the only way to reverse parasitic combined form of “Autocracy, Kleptocracy and Theocracy” that has set in Lankawe using the Modaya voting Universal Franchise.

Let us hope there will be more and more Sri Lankans like Sharmini attempting to reform the youth in the country and try to lead them along the right path. For that
attempt to succeed this valuable article of Sharmini must be translated into Sinhala and made available to every Sinhala reader. It is only then that our hopes of a better tomorrow in Sri Lanka would materialize.

It must be translated to Arabic perhaps, and printed as a leaflet and sprinkled from from a helicopter around Mawanella, Gampola, Hingula and all other heavy concentrations of Muslims (Galle, Colombo, Kandy to name a few).

Will that be a good idea Iqbal? Perhaps not according to your plans!

How come you get a brilliant idea, and we don’t.

How about Prakrit, Sanskrit, Tamil and Pali (in Brahmi) versions inscribed on Tablets of stones and dropped, distributed & sprinkled from a helicopter in the south?

You know I am inspired by you and am only trying to help you by developing your idea further.
        Please don’t thank me.
        No, don’t …………….

“How come you get a brilliant idea, and we don’t.”

Because you have no frucking brains, but only hatred of the Buddhists. The problem is your brains are not enough even to understand that!

You waste space on our country, stolen.

You stupid descendants of Kallthonies , you are the curse of my ancestral land.
Go get your women folks from Middle East Medieval countries if you have b***s. First go get yourself a job to look after them.

For the first time in the US, the head of Government Ethics QUIT in 2017 in disgust at the blatant violation of Ethics by Trump and his crony cabinet. Office of Government Ethics Director Walter Shaub Jr. quit following months of clashes with the White House over issues such as President Trump’s refusal to divest his businesses and the administration’s delay in disclosing ethics waivers for appointees.
Are you aware that foreign entities like Saudi Arabia are pumping in tens of millions to the Trump hotel which saw an increase in business and occupancy by tremendous amounts? Why is that? This is like if Bandaranaikes or Rajapakses had a hotel and suddenly it is booming.
    See report here
The Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C., which opened its doors days before the 2016 election, is thriving under Donald Trump’s presidency. New filings released on Wednesday show that revenues topped $40 million in 2017—its first full year of operations—as Trump supporters, corporate tycoons and foreign officials poured into the place for $25 cocktails, $110 steaks and, in some cases, $18,000 suites.
Those high prices afford guests something few hotels can: the chance of running into the President of the United States, who has dined there ten times since taking office, according to the Washington Post. Conservative pundits and celebrities are known to mingle in the lobby. Former chief economic advisor Gary Cohn was said to be living there at one point, alongside Cabinet members Steven Mnuchin and Linda McMahon. verbatim From WaPo.
More people have been under investigation, quit or had to resign in his(Trump’s) regime than any other previous regime. Honorable military leaders like Maddog Mattis and General Kelly quit in disgust. Ethics, values, integrity are all “down the pallan” as Lankans say in the USA.

But why be moral or ethical? All these structures are created nothing but to enforce opression. What right do you have over others to define what morality or what’s ethical or not?
