Profit Before Principle: Khashoggi’s Disappearance & US-Saudi Relations

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The mysterious disappearance of a Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, from inside the Saudi Embassy complex in Turkey on 2nd of October and an array of circumstantial evidence surrounding his disappearance, lead one to suspect that he was possibly abducted and murdered by a fifteen member death squad, sent by Saudi authorities. Although the Saudi government vehemently denied the allegation at the start, according to President Trump, the king now suspects that “rogue killers” may have carried out this grotesque act. In saying so Trump is either putting his own words into King Salman’s mouth or acting like a mnemonist to trigger the Saudi ruler’s mind to grab those words and use them to escape from guilt. At the same time, Trump has also warned of unspecified but “severe punishment” if allegations against Saudi Arabia were to be proved.  What a drama! On the one hand he is trying to let the Saudi King and his Crown Prince Muhammad off the hook while on the other he is trying to pacify an angry public. Meanwhile, Turkish authorities, in cooperation with Saudi government, are apparently searching for clues with a team of forensic experts and snipper dogs. Lately, the have discovered some ‘toxic’ material from the scene.

The fifteen member squad that arrived in Turkey was not from any Saudi intelligence gathering unit but a mixed bunch of body guards who protect the Saudi Crown Prince, Muhammad bin Salman, and army officials. Obviously, the body guards would not have come without the knowledge of their master, whose rise to power itself has left many questions unanswered. (Coincidentally, number fifteen was also the number of Saudis involved in the S11 infamy in America.) The world is outraged by the disappearance of yet another journalist in the hands of Saudi Arabians. In 2004, Simon Cumbers attached to BBC was shot and killed by an Al-Qaeda gunman, in As-Swaidi in Riyadh, for photographing the house of an Al-Qaeda member who was shot by the Saudi police a year earlier. Journalists are becoming an endangered species in tyrannical regimes. Sri Lankans would remember very well the mysterious death of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga under the previous regime.

Even if the Saudis were to be found guilty of Khashoggi’s murder what possible “punishment” would US and its allies inflict on Saudi authorities? US has, in the words of George W. Bush, an “eternal friendship” that actually started in 1945 when American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, while returning from the Yalta Conference, met the “robed, resplendent” King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud aboard the USS Quincy cruiser in the Suez Canal. It was not a friendship between two innocent hearts but a marriage of convenience to achieve one’s global aspirations as an emerging imperial power and the other’s desire for world recognition for an artificially created country with a tribal monarch.

Historically, Saudi Arabia owes its origin as a distinct geographical and political entity to Colonial Britain. It was this former imperial power, with its imperialist agenda to weaken, split and destroy the Ottoman Empire created Saudi Arabia as a wrecker of that Muslim caliphate. From that time onwards the desert kingdom has always remained a loyal agent of Western hegemons. When the seat of imperialism shifted from London to Washington, comprador Saudi Arabia, with its vast oil wealth discovered by foreigners and a contractual commitment to uphold, protect and promote the ultra-orthodox Salafi religious doctrine became an in indispensable US ally.

In return for this so called “eternal friendship”, which, realistically, can only last as long as oil remains the lifeblood of modern industries, the super power is determined to ignore any call from any quarter for intervention in the tyrannous governance of Saudi monarchy, but instead, resolved to supply the Saudi government for cash unlimited quantities of modern weapons to kill dissidents and keep the masses under permanent control. What those weapons are now doing to tens of thousands of innocent children and women in Yemen is public knowledge. US foreign policy rooted in advancing freedom, democracy and human rights has lost all credibility in its relations with Saudi Arabia. US’s merchants of death, with their control over the media and powerful lobby in the Congress have no qualms in supporting this marriage of convenience.  The US military-industrial-congress complex is happily in bed with Saudi tyrants. One can gauge the closeness of this diabolical friendship from one single fact, that when fifteen of the Saudi citizens hijacked and crashed two jumbos on the Twin Towers in New York and killed 2996 innocent civilians, US took its revenge not by bombing Riyadh or Jeddah but Baghdad and Kabul on false pretentions.  Also, after the FBI investigation into the New York disaster, 28 pages of its report, said to have implicated Saudi Arabia, were censored and still not released.

It is behind this cosy relationship with the superpower, which puts profit before principle, that Saudi rulers are conducting their surveillance over recalcitrant scholars, thinkers, journalists and activists who are agitating for democracy and constitutional change in that country. Professor Madawi al-Rasheed, an authority on Saudi Arabia, whose writings and views are also closely monitored by Saudi rulers, call these agitators “Muted Modernists” (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2015).  The professor has analysed in detail about some of the activities of the modernists. What follows is a brief note from her study:

From the several militant Islamist groups that metamorphosed into Al-Qaeda and which led to the 9/11 villainy was born the Saudi Association for Civil and political Rights (ACPRA)  in 2009, which agitated through petitioning the government for political representation, elected government, accountability and respect for citizens. It called for the transformation of the absolute monarchy into a constitutional one.  In 2013, the government responded to its call by imprisoning most of its founding members. In 2010, Muhammad al-Abd al-Karim, an assistant professor of Islamic jurisprudence was thrown into jail for a couple of months for posting an article questioning the legitimacy or otherwise of the succession struggle within the royal family. When he was released he was suspended from his teaching job.

Muhammad al-Ahmari, is a Saudi scholar trained in Britain. He is a prolific writer who appears in the popular media regularly to advance his thoughts on democracy and need for constitutional reforms. For a while, the Saudi government, because of his media charisma, tried to buy his loyalty to the regime, but al-Ahmari, being an honest intellectual, chose to migrate to Qatar and become a Qatari citizen. He continues to write from his adopted country that honours him as an intellectual. The Salafi establishment in Saudi Arabia however, is carrying on a campaign of character assassination against him. Sheik Salman al-Awdah, a veteran of the religio-political movement known as Sahwa in Saudi Arabia is an admirer of the Arab Spring. Through a new interpretation of Salafism and its theological grounding he has come to justify even a revolution to bring about political changes. He is banned from travelling abroad and his writings and movements are under close surveillance. Similarly, Abdullah al-Maliki, another controversial intellectual is questioning the established assumptions about the application of sharia in contemporary society. The writings, lectures and discussions of these intellectuals and activists are reaching a wider audience through foreign and social media. Journalist like Khashoggi, a Royal insider, who may have gathered more sensitive information about the regime and with his connection to internationally respected media was becoming a source of embarrassment and politically dangerous. Hence, he had to be neutralised. This may be the reason why he mysteriously disappeared. However, the question now is what will the US do if the regime is found guilty? The short answer is NOTHING that would jeopardise the “eternal friendship” built on cash and carbon. To the superpower profit is more important than principle.

There is also another immediate reason why US will not take any action against the desert kingdom. With sanctions on Iran about to begin shortly and winter approaches northern hemisphere, US needs Saudi Arabia to pump more oil into the market to keep oil prices down.  Punishing Saudi regime will jeopardise the situation and will add to Trump’s waning popularity before the mid-term elections. Regrettably, the ultimate losers in this saga however, are the people of Saudi Arabia who will have to endure the monarchical tyranny at least in the short and medium terms.

Dr thank you for bringing up this issue and staying unbiased as possible in presenting. Now you can be rest assured , in response, there will lot of foul smelling fart coming out of pseudo nationalist/pseudo patriots in the name of religion. I will like to remind them this incident is about a journalist killed by an psychopath. In Lanka we had more than 40 of them murdered by the regime and world did not react the way they do now. If so we will not me staring at the menace all over again. This is not about religion. This is about psychopaths who are curse to human kind. The irony is we already have witnessed plenty and still there is more in the making.

Thanks Dr. Ali. During the Cold War the Americans encouraged Saudi Arabia to spread Wahabi ideology in South and South East Asia and Afghanistan in order fight the Communists who were in power in Russia and China. Sri Lanka has seen this ultra conservative Islam gain hold in the eastern province where women have to be fully covered now.
US and Saudi weaponized Islam to fight communism and hence in Afghanistan the Taliban was formed and 9/11 was a classic case of blow-back.
The US also set up the Asia foundation in South east Asia to weaponize Buddhism in order to fight communism. This history of how US and its allies weaponized religion is also in the book “Cold War Monks: Buddhism and Americas’ Secret Strategy in South East Asia” published by Eugene Ford , Yale University Press.

        Right on Laxmi,
A lot of the religious conflicts in South and Southeast Asian countries which are historically multi-religious societies, were set up during the Cold war when religion (Islam and Buddhism) was Weaponised by CIA during the Cold war fight against Communism.

The world is reaping the fall out of the US weaponization and militarization of religion in its wars against Russia and China today..

      Dr. Amir Ali,

Thanks for the write up. The latest news is that he was in the Istanbul Saudi Embassy, and 15 of the Saudi Desth dead tortured him, by chopping him and finally beheading him. What was his crime? What was the crime of well over 40 Sri Lankan journalists to were killed and disappeared? So, the US and the West do not care so much about them? Maniacs do not like people who oppose them, both in Ssudi Arabia and Sri Lanka.

first they had torn off his fingers one by one, then while still alive they had used a saw to cut him up into pieces.Decent people should have nothing to do with such savages like prince salman. They should be shunned by everybody.

one of the killers has been silenced in a road ‘accident’in saudi.he had been identified and wanted for questioning by the turks.

At least we know how lasantha died.He was not tortured.Wasim thajudeen was tortured and i can imagine what ekneligoda would have gone through.that is the worst part, the torture more than the death itself, when someone has a grudge.

Jamal Khashoggi’s This Interview in Turkey Pushed Saudi Crown Prince MBS To Take Action Against him

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s3A27EqoXw

These tyrants aren’t sufficiently advanced to tolerate any criticism whatever. They follow Satan per Hadith of Najd.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UDy_apXW3E

Scholar from al-Azhar: Wahhabism is a Satanic Faith, the Horn of the Devil that Muhammad Predicted.

The SaudI Kings kills many Muslims and they were doing that for a long time. They also beheaded the innocent Sri Lankan maid, Rizana.

From Anonymous: The Saudi consulate was a butcher shop. A meat grinder. They brought a bone saw and a pathologist. Probably harvested his organs right there in the reception area. They aren’t human. They follow Satan per Hadith of Najd.

This is worse than the horror slasher scene from Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” Bates Motel. Wait til the CCTV clips from Turkey get aired of the killing. Sawing him to pieces while still alive. The shock and horror has only started,

Why does the US want to morally contaminate and prostitute itself with such lunatics? They are going to slowly drag us down the same psychopathic road as they took, as blow-back. They don’t belong in the civilized world. They are trying to drag our boys into fighting their medieval Shi’a enemy and Russian ally Iran, for money. Super bad idea leading to WWIII. Violates every norm of international law. We are on the wrong side, the side of the butchers. Run away!

This interview makes it clear to see why these assholes wanted to kill him. US apologists for Saudis said he wasn’t really a “critic?” Bullshit. He was a very good critic. These tyrants aren’t sufficiently advanced to tolerate any criticism whatever.

Did principle ever enter relations between the worst imperialist power known and a very loyal (and very rich) client?
Prof. Ameer Ali should know like any intelligent person what the eventual outcome would be: business as usual.

Turkey confirmed already it was a brutal killing done by these hit-men from Saudi. They dismembered the journalist alive and screaming audio recording evidence sent to Saudi and US. Now there are reports saying the remains were dissolve using acid

Everything is happening as per a plan that Saudi is expecting to accept the crime and forward an scapegoat to come out of it. Will see what the media, HR, Qatar and Turkey one side and US and Saudi other side – How US will react will have an impact on Trump’s political future.

      Lankan,

There are so many more interesting fact you did not get it right.

450 Billions USD arms order. not a quotation even from US. Trump said in American history this is the biggest amount (perhaps in the world history too) American has ever received an order. Trump clearly said, even if he is going to punish Saudis, it will not affect the deal since US wants that deal or Saudis will go to China or Russia.

I am not sure why you even have to link Saudi with Islam, but in Saudi, there had never been a religion. They just used religion through Religious Police to protect a monarchy. What is best about present prince is that he even ignores such police, “Mutawwas” and many are in the jail now.

Everything run as under a pure dictator now and that is better than being in-between

    Dear Amaeasiri .
Where is logics and rational thinking of Ibn Rushd among Muslim today ..
Is it Islam of Ibn taymiah thst rules Saudi now ?
I think that ibn Rishd and ibn Taymiah would not accept these raidical rulers..
When logic; rational: wisdom and common sense goes away ; we see this all this ..
It is shame to the entire Muslim world ..
It’s shame to all Arab world..
    To behave like this ..
All done with Donald trump is ready to defend Saudi…
Today; money could buy any thing ; any one and any country ..US is gone down in its moral principal..

Today’s So-called Muslims are Iblisis, who follow Wahhabi-Salafisml, with its roots going back to Ibn-Taymiah, Abdul Wahab and other Devil, Satan followers per the prescient Hadith of Najd. Just Google and U tube on Wahhabism Salagism is a Satanic faith from the Horn of the Devil, in Nsjd. The Devil is now the zKeeper of the Keyd of the two holy Mosques. Have you heard about the great Satan and the two minor Satans? Anyway, all those will end in in Hell-Fire per Islamic Theology, and those who follow them, Wahhabis, Salafis, Tauhidis And other pretenders. Istanbul Chop is just one example. 200 years ago the Wahhabis killed 5,000in Karabala. Just Google the sack of Karabsla by Wahhabis.

Thank you Ameer Ali for the well researched article. A ‘researched’ article has got to be unbiased which it is. Michael Roberts please note.
    .
A lateral thought: The Saudi Royals may not know that the real owners of the oil wealth are elsewhere. The Royal Family are glorified shop keepers, disposable anytime.
Some cocky owners of oil wealth like Saddam, Gaddafi have been death with. The oil keeps flowing but Iraqis and Libyans are killing themselves.
Iran is on the card. Not much success with Russia but is on the ‘try and try again’ list.
As a lesson to ‘other oil wealth owners’ there is oil rich Nigeria and Venezuela manipulated into a ‘starving corner’.

    What next? Currency war?

Srilanka was then a place where the world thought lankens are masters regarding let dissappearence s to continue but as a state not to have taken any actions under the leadership of most known Mr Madamulana.
In retrospect, we count them today as a known number 40 that were abducted by the underground network of Gotabaya Rajakshes.
At the time, successor editor to SUNDAY leader – Janzi left for USA, she had been threatened by most abusive Defence secretary louding that anyone could kill her.
Lasantha W the editor of Sunday leader was gunned down on broad day light, and all was planned to hang it on former Army commander Sarath Fonseker ended up in vain. Even today, the bugger et al make every effort to paint the picture in favour of Gotabaya- as he would not have been that barbaric to take lives of the people.
ALL IS CLEAR, human flesh would have been available in MARKETs for sure, if Gotabaya would be the Leader for this nation.

I have a question. Why is Turkey not taking measures against Saudi Arabia for the murder? Their response has been remarkably muted. Apart from drip feeding the media with fragments of information they have taken no action. Are they trying to use this incident as a bargaining chip? [Turkey’s record on dealing with dissent has not been any different either].

    • 4

      T. Rajah,
Turkey’s handling of the issue cannot be faulted much.
They know the Saudis had US support and that Saudi is a major middle-eastern power, roughly equal to Turkey. They have trade ties with Saudi Arabia when they are in a different alliance with Qatar and Iran, more sympathetic to the Islamic Brotherhood. They are also facing economic pressures with the fall of the Turkish Lira and sanctions from the the US.

So they are taking a dual-track: 1) having their own investigation 2) through selective leaks force SA and USA to address the issue without covering it up. In the process, if they seek leverage to have the US look at Turkey more positively, as a more democratic country and a real ally, despite Erdogan’s authoritarian tendencies, it is a position that cannot be faulted.

I am normally sympathetic to the Kurds and have previously condemned Turkey for their mistreatment of Kurds and their past genocide in Armenia. But on this issue, Turkey cannot be faulted.

The Khashoggi affair is making one’s stomach turn at the hypocrisy displayed by the leaders of the western world. Pushed into a corner, the clown prince of KSA had no alternative but to put the blame on overzealous supporters of the regime – “a rogue operation”. My foot!

Now some of the leading operatives have been “sacked” and the clown prince has appointed himself as the head of the unit investigating this cold blooded murder. Nobody in the western world seems to have heard of that saying “Set a thief to catch a thief”.

The fact remains that an interrogation unit had come to Turkey. So, it was premeditated. Nobody seems to ask that vital question “what happened to the body?” Turkey is also playing a dirty game. As for the US, Trump is thrilled at the actions taken by the Great Reformer of this century – the clown prince of Saudi Arabia. What a charade being played out in the international arena by the so-called human rights champions of the western world!

The sad truth is that as long as billion-dollar arms contracts are coming its way, the United States will turn a blind eye to the atrocities being brazenly committed by a savage brutal kingdom which is a blot in the face of the civilized world, We are living in strange times.

If anyone thinks the US is going to impose sanctions on the Saudis over some dead journalist think again.

    One word the Petro dollar.

The US is a exporter of oil. it does not need oil from SA.
Petro dollar: All crude oil. LNG etc are traded in USD.

So the whole world needs USD to buy oil and the USD value is high.

If countries stop using USD for oil, dollar value fall and funding US debt will become expensive and imported baubles to keep the citizenry distracted and happy will not be affordable.

Two countries tried to trade oil in gold and other currencies. Iraq and Libya.

Iran (and Russia) does trade oil in other currencies. Thats why they are evil.

Under the Magnitsky Act, Congress has triggered a process that can indeed lead to sanctions even if Trump does not want to do it. Your analysis of US opposition to Russia and Iran is laughable. But can one expect anything better from a Trump-loving punk?

So Agnos what say the Generals whom you high five.

Just to remind you I predicted that Trump would win and decent percentage of the Latino and womens vote, i.e. better than Romney.

Just as much as Obama sold arms to the Saudis to kill Yemenis.
U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration has offered Saudi Arabia more than $115 billion in weapons, other military equipment and training, the most of any U.S. administration in the 71-year U.S.-Saudi alliance,

Magnitsky Act my foot. The Saudis will concoct some story, throw some money around around, then Congress and Trump will bend over and say deeper please. And while preaching morality you will continue to lick up what spills on the ground.

Trump’s win was facilitated after Hillary made many unforced errors. She took WI, MI and PA for granted as Democratic bastions and didn’t even campaign in WI. And the last minute action by James Comey to restart the email inquiry reinforced the view, in the minds of some voters, that Hillary had something to hide and was corrupt. But that Trump was even more corrupt and unworthy was lost on those voters.

Until the election turned in the last 3 weeks before the election, the only rational way to predict the election results, based on surveys, was to hold that Trump wouldn’t win. So anyone who “predicted” such a win early on were simply throwing darts. Mano Ratwattte and you had nothing to gloat there.

But what I will concede is that having lived in only in the more urban and highly educated parts of America where the ‘creative class’ lived, I didn’t realize how high a percentage of Americans were ‘racial’ in thinking. The Trump phenomenon has exposed that. I had always maintained that high levels of immigration would create a backlash, but I didn’t realize it would come so soon. I was always aware that most evangelicals ( and a good number of those who call themselves Christians in general) were confused and morally challenged, but I didn’t realize the extent to which they would contort themselves in order to support an utterly immoral man.

Your analysis is still laughable on US v. Russia and US v. Iran.

such a win early on were simply throwing darts. Mano Ratwattte and you had nothing to gloat there.

If you recall I said, by 2006 knew that a crash was coming. Not because I have superior analytical skills, I try to read both sides of the story.

Cant talk about Mano, I did comment that if it was Bernie Sanders it was too close to call. Hillary was no brainer, she was busy calling the mid west deplorables (solid blue working class) and giving speeches to Wall Street.

I have crossed the US three times in a old car, most times fixing it myself when it broke down. I am equally comfortable getting pissed drunk with red neck out in Nebraska as in walking the streets of Camden, NJ (I wouldnt get drunk there though).

Anyway back to current politics I am no Trump lover, all I can say for him, as yet he has not bombed the shit out of some brown country.

To me Bush/Obama/Trump are all the same immoral hypocrites who will go to any length to protect the US economy, starting with selling arms to the Saudis.

Your analysis is still laughable on US v. Russia and US v. Iran.

I seriously suggest you read up about the Petro Dollar.

You know in 2003 Gaddafi gave up Nuclear Weapons. So why did your Peace president and R2P witches bomb the shit out of Libya. Of course the hypocrite Peace president says it was his biggest mistake, no apology though. Whats the odd bomb or too, lets move on was his attitude.

Khashoggi is an idiot. He walked right in to the den and confronted the Lion. What is the Lion supposed to do? Purr?

        Thappu,
        .
Kalavedda says, he went to the Embassy to clear up some paperwork regarding his forthcoming wedding. We cannot ignore this piece of information because it comes from a dirty animal who lives in the ceilings of human dwellings and knows what is going on even in the bedrooms. He may have eavesdropped on a conversation like this between Khashoggi and his Fiancée:
        .
Khashoggi: Baby, we have to go to the embassy to clear up those papers about my birth certificate.
        .
Fiancée: OK. I will come with you. Please don’t go alone.
        .
Khashoggi: OK. We will start around 9.
        .
Fiancée: Hey Jamal. What is that noise in the ceiling?
        .
Khashoggi: That is that dirty Kalavedda who is living in my ceiling.
        .
Fiancée: Oh, Allah! What is this stuff pouring on us? It stinks like hell!
        .
Khashoggi: Run Baby Run. It is the Kalavedda pissing on us before his mating act. Only our Embassy can save us now. They have the antidote for it.
        .
That is how Khashoggi ended up in the embassy and died immediately after. The embassy staff tried to treat him. But they were too scared to go near him. They knew that only Putin’s Nerve Agent is more virulent than Kalavedi piss.

Are you saying it was Dr Go the lion who killed Khashoggi?

Now that you mention it, it could be a dirty Vedi job – not a Kalavedi job – but a Vedi job.

Jamal Khashigi new too much for the discomfort of the Trump administration and the Saudi Royal Family with many under hand deals, to handle. It was a joint effort to silence him for good.

Stop this nonsense. Saudi Arabia has come out with a partial truth after 2 weeks of denials; that he was indeed murdered in the consulate. Turkey will release more details, but the US had nothing to do with it.

In general, temptation to create conspiracy theories is strong.
Despite my dislike of US imperialism, I will not blame it for all things foul that happen in the world.
