Road to Dictatorship Paved With Three Triumphs

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

Gotabaya Rajapaksa has scored three wins and his march to dictatorship has gained ground. The biggest triumph was the first when he swept to the presidency in a rally of 72% of the Sinhala-Buddhist (SB) electorate. This is a defining event; its consequences will endure. Though liberals and pluralists bleat the merits of racial and religious equality, they inhabit not Lanka but cloud cuckoo land. In truth the consciousness of the majority in this land is a Sinhala-Buddhist ethos. The deep inscrutable emotional wellspring of this nation’s psyche is that it is the land of the Lion-people and the Dagoba-worshiper. Whether you think this good or bad, right or mistaken is worthy of discourse, but that it is so cannot be disputed. As one R.R. Wasala ecstatically proclaims “the dominant Sinhala Buddhist civilizational foundation of this island nation” will persist. The proclamation of a pan Sinhala-Buddhist Archaeology Task Force surely is cause for further delight!

The groundswell of SB empathy identifies itself with Gota and his presidency. It will be firmer and longer lasting than Trump’s Base because its foundations lie in historically consolidated ethno-religious substance. I cannot predict whether 60% or what number of SBs will stick with Gota at first if he unveils an undisguised dictatorship, but many will. The gift his people bestowed on Gota in November 2019 will not be deflated quickly.

Two lesser victories have consolidated Gota’s grip – the government’s success (underpinned by the military) in containing corona-virus and the Supreme Court rejection of challenges to Gota’s right to rule sans parliament beyond three months. It is universally believed that had the Aappaya-Sevalaya squad still been in office it would have made a cock-up of the crisis. Though draconian curfew and the pain inflicted on the poorer classes were unnecessary the fact nevertheless is that Gota’s image has gained. Third, the SC’s flawed judgement reinforced Gota’s hand to the point where he promptly set up more task forces including one to build a “Secure Country, Disciplined, Virtuous and Lawful Society”. Language typical of military rulers.

The first item in the ToR reads:

“Taking necessary immediate steps to curb illegal activities of social groups violating the law and harmful to the free and peaceful existence of society”. Deliberately vague and undoubtedly dangerous.

The second is a Duterte style instruction to stamp out drug cartels and the drug trade.

The third is:

“Take legal action against persons responsible for illegal and antisocial acts in Sri Lanka while located abroad”.

Don’t miss that the wording palpably includes anti-Gota, anti-military, anti-government and anti-fascist acts.

The authorisation says, “the Task Force may issue instructions to Government Officers and others. They shall comply. I instruct Government Officers and others to provide all possible assistance and full information”.

If I were Professor Gloom I would say the dice is heavily weighted in favour of authoritarianism. The three advantages that Gota holds also ensure election victory, but I hope not 2/3rds. All who want democracy will have to steel themselves for a long fight. This is no time to slacken but to gird-up and draw upon reserves of strength that will be needed when the dictatorship comes unhinged as the economy goes into free fall in the context of global recession. Strengthening the JVP in the next parliament will fortify a force that can oppose Gota’s authoritarian moves. The UNP and the Sajith Group do not have the backbone to stand against Gota.

I am dismayed by frequent thoughtless comments I hear that a Gota dictatorship will make Lanka prosperous “like Singapore”. Rubbish! Singapore was built on strong institutions – a renowned public service, one of Asia’s best educational systems, familiarity with English, abolishing corruption, a judiciary admired for competence in commercial law and elected parliaments that kept the military firmly in place and on a short leash. Most of all, Lee Kwan Yue repudiated racism and created a plural society. In every one of these respects Singapore is the opposite of what a Gota dictatorship will be.

The response of the American people to the murder of George Floyd demonstrates the rugged strength of democracy in that country. It is vastly different from our experiences in Sri Lanka. There has been an outpouring of anger among whites; demonstrations sometimes more white than black; everyone stood up against racial brutality. Over here, contrast the 1983 riots. With the exception of a few brave Sinhalese who stuck their necks out to protect friends and neighbours the disparity is stark. Anything like “Tamil Lives Matter” would have been an unimaginable. And right now, the middle-classes and the masses enjoy and encourage the abominable treatment handed out to Muslims by professionals and the state. We have a long way to go before rejection of racism reaches anything comparable to the mature democracies. There is much racism over there too, of course Floyd’s murder itself shows how bad it still is, but there is gigantic disapproval among the people; not so in Lanka. The boldness of the NY Times headline “Minneapolis Will Dismantle Its Police Force, Council Members Pledge” and the proposal before the American Congress to restructure, defund and reform the police across the country, though eventually less than a third will get done, simply takes one’s breath away.

Prof.Kumar David is absolutely correct. Gota is no where to Lee Kuan Yue. So long as Gota continues to arrest politicians on various pretext for petty matters, he cannot be a Statesman. A true national leader will never allow room for democracy or judiciary in crisis. Here is a case where Gota relies on military officers as a Task Team and criminal Governors as military officers with records of fraud, all of which symbolize a path toward dictatorship. Discipline is only a slogan to mesmerize the Sinhalese. Is there any economic advantage in just building Buddhist Viharas on a site after destroying a Hindu temple, other than living on racism? It is a million dollar question whether Gota allow room for civic liberties and transparency. All what he knows is threat through military officers. As far as his knowledge on economic development is concerned, it is nil.

      Dearest Prof. KD,
      .
thank you for your article. Thank you for your courage.
      :
Whatever being said and done, but the very people voted for buggers seem to be not realizing the little. Meaning this struggle of helping open their eyes can take few more decades.
      :
If any high crimes would be the case from the site of Rajakashes – are painted as ” it should be the way” while anyone stands against RAJAPAKSHES and their actiivities would be considered as – violaters of the prevailing laws –

But I believe, people will have to realize it in the days to come, how DEVIOIUS, MALICIOUS, ABUSIVE these men really are, that will occure for sure, is my wish::: WAIT AND see.

      AYATHURAY RAJASINGAM,
“Gota is no where to Lee Kuan Yue.”
People in Sri Lanka who voted for President Gotabhaya Rajapakshe do not want him to become another Lee Kuan Yue. They want him to be Gotabhaya Rajapakshe of Sri Lanka.

Lee Kuan Yue’s son is protecting ‘Maha Benku Hora’.

Gotabhaya is protecting the biggest ‘Maha Benku Hora’ Nivard Cabraal. I think 21,000 signatures placed by Sirisena is not enough to get Arjuna Mahendran extradited. Ask Gota to put 25,000 signatures and send begging letter and not demanding letter. What a shame when wonder of Asia has to fall at the feet of a tiny country.

“…do not want him to become another Lee Kuan Yue…”
no one can emulate Lee Kuan who built Singapore from scratch to be one of the most sort after country for manufacturing, financial services, logistics and ports, etc etc

People in Sri Lanka have no ambition or aspirations as long as they have a Buddha statue at every street corner and live off the hands of the saffron robed thugs. People of Sri Lanka are being blinded by bright yellow colours.

Gota’s arrogance demonstrates that he has achieved massive heights, but that is because of the lies and deceptions to the Sinhalese which brought an illusion that he is the hero, have protected him. But for how long. Even Sir Winston Churchill appeared as a hero after the 2nd World Ward, but at the election he defeated. Therefore, Gota will have to prove his guarantee in the civic liberties enshrined in the constitution as well as his economic wisdom at the coming election. Lee Kuan Yue’s son is still praised by the Singaporeans if you would have watched his humble address to the Public after the Corona virus in Singapore. But Rajapaksas are having a separate laws for themselves and separate laws for others. Their evil motive has become a question mark in the eyes of the public.

        Eagle Eye ultra BP,

that was the reason why we those stood against BPs repeated that you would never be able to expect apple from a mango tree. So, to this day, just passing 8 months since bps are in power, all is turning out to be bankrupt:
No transparency and accountablity in whatever they step forward.
My grand ma was used to say ” you would never be able to straighten the dog’s tail, even making an effort to do so is so stupid”:
        .
How dare these men to compare great Lee Kuan Yue with that of HIGH CRIMINAL who was about to be convicted by the time, stupid people elected him. Not for anything else, their cry was to return and stop the crime investigations.
        :
Today, the very same BPs lick the balls of Americans for some reasons. I have no doubt, there will be sorta of an insurgency rise up in the months to come, if CRIMINAL gotabay led groups would treat the people the way they treated those women and men that were about to protest, day before yesteray.

      AYATHURAY RAJASINGAM,
According to ‘Para’ Demalu Sri Lanka failed to produce someone like Lee Kuan Yue because of racist Sinhala Buddhist supremacists. Why India failed to produce a person like Lee Kuan Yue?

      • 4
        1

India failed to produce someone like Lee Kwan Yew, because of racist North Indian supremacists. Despite discrimination, South Indian states are prospering. Do you know that GDP of every South Indian state is higher than that of Sri Lanka. Now that Sinhala toilet cleaners in Europe, middle east and far east are out of employment, why not send them to South India to demonstrate their expertise. By this Sri Lanka will earn valuable Indian currency independently, without begging Indian government for money.

Nothing new from the sad prof. He has been singing the SB racist tune over and over again. Can’t he wait for a single resist incident from this Govt till he shouts his all too familiar tune. Sadly this type of rhetoric only helps to breed racial rancor not peace and harmony.

For a start the control of the Covid 19 Pandemic. Something that most govts. (US and UK in particular) couldn’t achieve. This was not a small task to accomplish and shows Gota organizational skills and leadership. Please compare with Trump (a total disaster) and Boris J (who got wiser only when he fell down with CV19). Now I am waiting for Gota to handle the drug menace -he has made a bold start which no SL politician has done to date. People in SL now needs a stable Govt which can perform well. Prof KD clearly realizes that Gota can perform but he cannot bring himself to accept him as Gota vanquished his ‘great leader’ the terrorist and racist Prabakaran.
Sad to see this Blog so partition – with supposedly educated folks. People must open their eyes criticize what is wrong with facts and praise what is good. The common Sri Lankan seems to be much more reasonable -they threw out the Rajapakshas when they failed to perform after the war ended and then threw out the Yahapalana after the mess they created -particularly the Bond Scam and the sordid response to Easter attacks when intelligence information was brought to them by the Indians repeatedly.

Can we compare srilanken statistics with that of the US and UK in terms of the containment of COVID 19 within our island nation ?

          Srilanka
A tropical country with one entry point to the country with 22-mio. Nepal is subtropical and Vietnam and the like countries and their statistics should go closely that of srilanka. And tropical countries in tribal africa where the disease spread is for some reasons similar to that of tropical geographical locations across the world.

At the time, COVID 19 outbreak was started, it was high winter across Europe, US, and the like minded countries. Most of them have higher levels in health related achievements according to the statistics. But SUPER-SPREADER events brought many of them to the manner, if a glass would be poured more the volume of glass… so that the rest should overflow… Hospitals were overloaded. The situation heard from LOMBADI in Italy was so tragic, all other EU and US locations followed.
To the POV of the virologists, the spread of COVID-19 strains are multi-factorial.-
          To be continued.

More of the seniors of your nature, should come forward else, today s generations would be short of some knowledge about the past of this country and the background for tamil srilankens to go for CIVIL war which held over 3 decades. I really get to know more about our royalists, through your comments.

Leelagemalli, in trying to protect Rajapakse brothers for the crime of organizing Easter bombing, Cardian Malcolm has become a liar. Unfortunately for him, the Catholic flock is not allowing him to cover it up. In order to satisfy them, he makes statements like “I am not satisfied with the inquiry about Easter bombing”. Catholics had wanted to start agitating from the first anniversary of bombing to bring culprits to book, but this pandemic has made them to postpone it, and when the pandemic is over they will start their campaign. Cardinal Malcolm will try to hoodwink Catholics saying that not to agitate and he will get the government to act and prevent them from agitating. If Cardinal Malcolm continues to support Rajapakse brothers in covering up the crime of Easter massacre, he is sure to receive abuse.

Paving stones to interlock integrally for a path to authoritarianism are well selected. To nourish wishes that rivers of milk and rivulets of honey will mingle is just folly. The writer is fully alive to realities, but never will the readership be.

I can understand the writer’s dismay and anguish. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka is an under-developed country in terms of social maturity. This borders on entrenched tribalism and related mind-set. The rulers know this well, and manipulate matters to suit. That is why the so-called victories are so glaring and stark. Attempts at democracy Western-style were roundly rejected by the mass of voters. We, who can analyse the many aspects of life in SL are a minute minority that rulers don’t even bother to address.

      Dear Lasantha,

Agree with you ” nfortunately, Sri Lanka is an under-developed country in terms of social maturity”

But to my surprise yet today, why do the university dons (sociologists, psychologists, historians and other experts ) stay mum not having realized it ?
      .
If not EXPERTs who to help with that ? Why Dr Dewarsiri et al is now made to silent mode ?

Why do untruths become PEOPLE’s breaking news of the day while the facts and figures being not known to them ?
      .
Alone that formular on OIL prices – is very common in the west, and adjusted to every minute. We enjoy it in the west today, while SRILANKENs not:: but not even is caught by the MAIN STREAM media yet today why ?What is happening with the collossal amounts being saved by charging the people further on oil prices. As i got to know they the state save over 100% today not having given the oil price reduction to the consumers. Oil is connected with almost everything of a country is the reason me to raise this issue here.

      Lasantha Pethiyadoda ,

When Ravi Karunanayaka was the minister of Finance , he was the
best of Finance Ministers in South Asia ! Rajitha Senarathna was
one of the best Health Ministers in the world ! Present rulers , according
to some reports , warned world bodies of withdrawal of memberships if
the country was wrongly accused of bad performance ! Wimalo was
very brave to protest against the U N with a hunger strike when Mara
was the president ! Mervin went a step further proposing to marry U N
human right chief during the same period ! Now my question is , why do
you say we are under-developed ? Do you want to discredit Gnanasara
and Athuraliye of their claim of 2500 year old rich Buddhist culture that is
second to none ? Didn’t we reach social maturity with that 2500 year
teachings ? I think it is a serious note my friend and make sure nobody
      knows your where about !

Author I assume write with very partial to Tamil race. He conclude all Sinhalese favours Gota. He tells us western countries always treat brown sahibs like brothers. He sees wrong in restrictions imposed for COVID. Does not see the sense of not calling old corrupt parliament till election. He only see wrong of controlling drug menace.
He can’t see rule of Singapore is passed from farther to son. Educated Sri Lankan when they went to green pastures of western countries, don’t mind working as taxi drivers or working in petrol stations. Majority of Tamils in Sri Lanka lives in south of the country and they live harmoniously with other races. Truth is Tamil ethnic group is originated in India and distributed now all over by willingly or unwillingly migrating to other countries.
Elite group of Northern Tamils prevent there poor disadvantaged people living in harmony with rest of the country. They do not contribute to make changes that will benefit total population unless they can sell it with racial agenda. They should join forces with anti Gota forces in the south to make better country which will respect law and order like their promised lands of western countries.

    Prof. David
Did you pay attention to the words “… illegal activities of social groups violating the law” and “…
Take legal action against persons responsible for illegal and antisocial acts…”? What are the meanings of the terms “illegal and legal action”? A government has every right to seek legal avenues, if anyone breaks the law. Also people who think innocent can seek legal help to fight. This is how a democratic society should work. When a country has wild donkey freedom, enforcement of disciplined behaviour is viewed as dictatorship. That is how professionals like you manipulate and poison people’s minds with toxic terms. I would say it is prostitution of learned subject. You are talking about now having had a movement like “Tamil lives matter” in Sri Lanka in 1983. That was the price Tamils had to pay self-isolation, self-segregation and kindling an armed struggle. They behaved like “Sinhala lives do not matter”. Black people never waged an arms struggle against whites. Blacks were really discriminated. Don’t equate Tamils in Sri Lanka to blacks in USA as it is an insult to Blacks.

  • 9
    12

In Sri Lanka, there was and is a problem due to rich and poor, powerful and not-so powerful, disciplined and undisciplined, ethical and unethical, empowered and not empowered etc. etc. However, these problems are not specifically for the minority but common for all ethnicities. When the minority people label the above problems as problems specifically for them, the majority who are Sinhalese have an added problem specifically against with the minority due to mis-interpretation to seek advantage. When the minority ethnic people started separation from the majority and ask for independence to deal with those problems, the majority becomes suspicious, what the minority would ask next. When the minority becomes violent and armed, attacking innocent majority and own dissidents, the problem resolution becomes much harder and harder. This is why the end became so ugly. Such a war had innocent victims from both the minority and the majority.

  • 8
    12

At the outset, the problem sufferers of the minority and the majority should have got together and fought against the common enemy. If they did that, the history might have been written differently. Segregation and separation would never win in a democratic society. Still the minority has not learned this lesson. Professionals like you advise them to continue that by twisting the truth. Sadly, the process initiated by GR cannot be stopped. Only you can do is to join it and paddle sideways to change the direction This is how crabs walk against mighty sea-waves. Move side ways but forward.

    • 9

      Atu,
      .
Segregation and separation would never win in a democratic society. Are u sure ?
      :
What about Turkish community in Germany
Paksitan, Indian, Srilanken, Bangali, Chinese communities in UK?
      – To my eyes, so far they ve been doing well with it.

To your eyes aforementioned communities are not doing well in such societies ?
      .
Their getto life styles are MORE connected with their community culture and traditions than anything else.

Chinese and Indians where they are.. they live their own traditions but in compliance with the national laws mostly.

    • 8
      1

      Atu,
Segregation and Separation win in a dictatorship. Segregation and Separation win when the majority is one ethnic group. 75% of the population is Sinhala Buddhists in Srilanka. Buddhists Sinhala wants a separate nation for Sinhala Buddhist Sinhala. That is why 72% of Buddhist Sinhala voted for candidate who represent Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism. In other words, 72% of Buddhist Sinhala prefers dictatorship against democracy. However, Mahinda family’s focus was not about country or people. Their focus is power, popularity, and wealth accumulation.

However, Mahinda Family is in doubt about how can they get two third majority in parliament to change the constitution. They need 100% of Buddhist Sinhala to support to get that two-third majority. But unfortunately they have reached their maximum with Buddhist Sinhala voters. That is why, now Mahinda Rajapaksa is asking TNA to support them and they can solve all the problem. It looks like Mahinda is leaning towards Tamils for help. Is he going to agree for a federalism? Is he going to cheat Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalists including Monks? So far, they are successful in cheating.

      • 0
        3

You are misguided. Sinhalese are not bold or an aggressive race. Actually they are weak but only become aggressive when they are pushed to a corner. Also they are decent and discrimination is not in their blood. However, when they are pushed too much the react discriminatory manner. I had so many Tamil gentlemen as my bosses in my public sector career. I respected the, served them with utmost respect. Also I had Tamil subordinates and treated them respectfully, They respected me well. Separation and segregation is never in Sinhalese people’s mind as they tolerate coexistence. However, they hate other who try to separate and segregate because it undermine the co-existence. It is the minority push majority towards Rajapaksha leadership. What GR and MR is trying to say to TNA is that TNA has no option rather than openly support SLPP because TNA or Minority will just be idle, insignificant forces in political arena if chose to be operated independent and isolated. If TNA and Minority wants any progres, join SLPP with a principled stand but forget about asking an independent Eelam. It will never be achieved as Sinhalese has no other land than this small island. Either live together happy or live separated miserably. Choice is with TNA and Minority.

          Atu,
There is nothing to misguide. I have lived through the period of independence until now. Sinhalese are not pushed by any Tamil or Tamil politicians. You may be right that they are weak and they have been pushed by few racist Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalists. That is why they mercilessly massacred hundreds of Tamils in 1958 and Tamils were shipped to North. They dragged their neighbours who lived as a good neighbours for many years and burnt them. I never seen such brutality in my life. Mahinda Rajapkse Family (SLPP) is a cheat, actor and a murderers. They murdered their long time friend Lasantha who told the truth. I don’t think Tamils will never ever support Mahinda even Mahinda family massacre whole Tamil community.

      Rajash,
At the time British colonial rulers returned freedom taken away from Sinhalayo and Vedda Eththo who are the Native people in Sinhale in 1948, Demalu who were aliens in Sinhale had the choice either to live in this country or return to their ancestral land in Hindusthan. Sinhalayo neither invite Demalu to Sinhale nor force them to stay in Sinhale. Demalu who like to stay with Sinhalayo as Sri Lankans without grumbling are welcome to stay. Others should find some other place where they feel comfortable.

Eagle Eye – why don’t you go back to where you came from…(or don’t you know where you came form?)…so that Tamils can get their country Eelam now AKA modern day Sri Lanka back.

          Rajash,
The North and East of the country that the descendants of Dravida slaves from Malabar brought to Sinhale by Portuguese after 1505 are squatting and claim as their ‘Traditional Homeland’ is where two Kingdoms of Native Sinhalayo; Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa flourished. Those Kingdoms were destroyed by your ancestors who invaded this country. Please return that land to rightful owners and get lost to the cesspool across the Palk Strait.

            Dear Eagle,
The North and East of the country that the descendants of Dravida slaves from Malabar brought to Sinhale by Portuguese
These same colonial parasites allowed your female ancestors to wear blouses. They allowed your people to do work in other trades than drumming or hakuru making. What’s more, they helped in the ordination of your Salagama or Durawe people as hamuduruwos. Otherwise you wouldn’t be talking about Sinhala Buddhism today. Give credit where it’s due.

Gota is trying to reform a country that grew in a democratic environment. He never mixed with people or the Media, He carried the gin on one hand with the help of his brother Ngainda became secretary to defense and did many HR violations calling his leaf a strong Buddhist. I am not sure how the writer derived at the figure of 72@% of Singhala Buddhist voters voted for him. Gota polled 52.5 % of votes polled. The setting of 20% of minority voted aginst him the balance 32,5% vote he polled came from Siggahls Buddhist Voters. There are intelligent professional educated Singhala Buddhist Voters who are digested with GOTAs attitude and the way he is handling with vindictive policy. T. Ranil has secret pact with Gota to save him April attack case and CB Bons scandal

Gota’s dictatorship will be cemented by the Saffron Brigade which is working behind the scenes and is responsible for his progress so far.
He does not name them now as they are his reserves in the political maelstrom brewing to climax after the election, to cement the coming politico/military regime.
The future is bleak and dangerous for minorities – racial & religious.

There is nothing as Prof. Gloom or Doomed as long as the analysis follow logical path. I do not believe in optimistic-pessimistic theories. I stay with logic and science Vs Hypocrisy and cunning propaganda. We proved we are different by naming White Flag murderer on Jan 9th as New King.
So what is going to be the output of the current turn of events is, just as the snowball reaches base it the picks up speed and momentum, Lankawe going to roll down faster. Care, this rolling started in 1948. The tricky question is when the ball hits the base and explodes in Big Bang. For a sense, it might have happened with somewhere in 2010-2015, with the 18A. But the foreign interests, like China, India America, postponed the Big Bank, wondering for a possibility of dam the flood and irrigate to their fields. This is leaving it as anybody who can accurately predict the Individual and combined actions of India, China & America only can predict the Big Bank day of Lankawe. Until that, only ball accolades. So more time it takes, higher the spectacular of the Big Bang. A possible war could be fought in Lankawe by the superpowers.

  • 3
    3

King is Hitler, no Lee Kwan Yew. But, as Prof. Kumar is saying, Lankawe is neither Germany nor Singapore. So nothing happened in them both could be drawn here for parallel comparison. Lankawe is one and only, comparable to it only. So, in short, I expect for near future is sped up white vans, mass murders of media personals and rapist army brutality on minorities. Rice will not come from moos. The time is changed. Home gardening is not going to be as success as Siri Mao’s time.
This is one of a those rare pieces that I agree with Prof. Kumar. It is worth for CT to put his last Para in bold.

KD is right to a point. but Gota is not loved because he is Sinhala Buddhist . He has proven himself over and over as capable even brooking no-nonsense from anyone. That is part of his appeal.

Even the Covid crisis has proven it.

in the years I lived in SL there has rarely ever been a president like him . people who love the country want the country to be developed for the common man to improve his lot . They dont care about this so-called freedom for journalists or saboteurs to have the wild donkey freedom to destroy the country. One feels that there is hope in a lot of like minded people.

unfortunately CT ‘s mission and the ones who flock to it do not care for all this. Most live overseas and are there because they hate the country.

    Kumar David,
It is not the land of the Lion-people and the Dagoba-worshiper. It is the Land of Sinhalayo and Vedda Eththo who are the Native people in Sinhale. All the others are aliens who were given citizenship by Sinhalayo without imposing conditions as Americans do.

“…it is the land of the Lion-people and the Dagoba-worshiper.”

Archaeologically there were only Dravidians and Veddhas in prehistoric times when the it was a contiguous land mass with India. This is why a pan Sinhala gang has been formed consisting of murderer Kamal Gunaratne and intellectually bankrupt racist archaeologist Raj Somadeva to destroy all evidence of Dravidian Saivite ancestry. All problems arose due to giving citizenship to alien Bengali criminals by Dravidians without imposing any conditions.

        Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam,
Evidences are emerging that Sinhalayo had few settlements in Southern part of India before Dravidians who were chased away by Moghuls from Northern India moved to the south (Source: Champakalakshmi R. (2003), Trade, Ideology and Urbanization: South India, 300 BC to AD 1300.).
According to scientifically validated archaeological evidences Sinhalayo evolved in the land that was called Sinhale (Ela Nadu by Tamils) at later stages from Homo sapiens who lived in the southern coastal areas about 125,000 years ago. As they moved away from hunting and gathering and started farming they have moved to the northern part which is more conducive for rice farming based on irrigation. It could be that Sinhalayo moved all the way to the southern part of the sub-continent when the two lands were separated by shallow sea.
Probably Dravidians might have massacred those Sinhalayo before they invaded Sinhale and plundered this country.

It will help if we have even a scrap of credible archaeological evidence in support of this thesis on what was there when this island was a contiguous land mass with India?
        *
Was the concept of citizenship in existence when ‘alien Bengali criminals’ arrived to a land held by ‘Dravidians’?

If you cannot understand sarcastic comment, then blame your intellect. Eagle Eye AKA Mahindapala can only comprehend replies in his style of expression. NASA and Indian Institute of oceanography have produced pictures of structures lying buried between India and Sri Lanka suggestive of a land link between them, and computer simulated diagram shows a possible connection between western coast of India and Kalpitiya peninsula and between eastern coast of India and Jaffna peninsula. This will be proved in the future with advancing technology.

“Archaeologically there were only Dravidians and Veddhas in prehistoric times when the it was a contiguous land mass with India.”
If this is sarcastic, many of your earlier comments without scientific basis (to repeat them is trolling I guess) would be in that category.
Your ‘sarcasm’ will escape anybody’s intellect. Be proud.
You can be nasty, but rarely have I come across sarcasm.
            *
I have seen the NASA image long ago. NASA does not say when the link existed. It could have been there an order of a millennium before Christian era.
‘Dravidians’ certainly did not start in the South of the sub-continent. And evidence of civilization there does not go back many centuries. Literature, far less.
What evidence is there that they coexisted with the Attho.
Even prehistoric existence offers tangible evidence. Produce some if possible.
            *
“This will be proved in the future with advancing technology.” Why don’t you wait until then than speculating here.

The talk of the Town and Village is: Get rid of 225 and bring “Educated” to the Legislature. The other day I saw an interview given by Dr, Nalaka Godahewa, a contestant from SLPP nominated to Gampaha District. The interview was by “Darshana Hadunge” of “Vlog”. In answer to a question, this “Educated” candidate, said: “I admit religion plays a prominent role in the election. In that context, I have much to gain, because I am a Buddhist and my wife is a Catholic. That “Advantage” is on me. I recently converted my house to a “Political Office” and in the opening, an “Alms” giving was arranged. A record number of “Buddhist Monks” numbering 141 attended. They were from the “Temples” of Kelaniya to Attanagalla”. That shows the huge “Backing” I have from the “Buddhist and I am sure to win”. This “Candidate” is a “Ph.D.”, a “Chartered Accountant” and holds a host of other “Educational” qualifications and above all the “Head” of “Viyathmaga” that claims credit for bringing “GR” as President. So, is this the “TYPE” of “Educated” to replace that “225” the voters of Gampaha District are going to vote and the SLPP that had nominated him? Just imagine where the “WIND” is blowing and what is in stock for Sri Lanka. These are the “Ground Realities” and the “Grass Roots” have already been well “Nourished” towards the “Determined” goal of “WINNING”.

Until about the middle of seventies , our roads were flying with European cars .
One hundred percent ! We had Canadian engine trains and UK made Buses .
The open economy brought down cars from Japan , class and quality were still
there . Market slowly ,slowly started to shift from Europe , Japan to India and
China ! But still , Big wigs of the government import Mercedez , Peugeot and Land
rover from Germany , France and UK although they are assembled somewhere
else ! The question now in front of us is , why have we shifted from Western Europe
to India and China for our vehicle needs ? The correct answer will put us where we
are today and why ! There were Mercedez cars all over the country , one or two in
every electorate at least ! My brief answer is , the situation changed not because new
markets emerged but because of our affordability crashing down forcing us to go
for cheaper versions ! The bitter truth ! Same in politics ! From high to low !

      whywhy,
Same thing happened in USA and Europe. The cars they produced were drinking gasoline. When Japanese came out with energy efficient cars, Americans and Europeans preferred those cars.

During financial crisis there was a thing called ‘Japan Bashing’ in USA. When millions of Americans and Europeans lose their jobs after COVID-19, racism will raise its head in these countries. That is the experience in the past.

        Eagle Eye ,

After a long time Eagle Eye ! The point I was making was simple with
an easy digestible example . The car issue was just one such example .
Even our foot rulers were made in England once upon a time ! We still
import them but not from the West ! All our medicines came either
from England or Germany . And Now much of our medicines come from
India,Pakistan and Bangladesh . My point is not about East and West
but the reason for the shift and that in my view is , affordability . We can
not afford to pay the prices once we we did pay ! And I blame the ever
declining quality of our leaderships which has now made history by
bringing in a POLITICAL INFANT that is G R to the Presidency which is
the worst ever accident in Srilankan politics . I am saying this purely as
a neutral man about our politics . I hate to see someone leading
depending on someone else’s dictation ! I have the experience of proposing
people to leaderships and then sit and watch what they are doing without
ever advising them on their moves ! Is that the situation about G R ? The
        whole world knows it !

          Why why,
This may sound strange to you, but our living standards have improved over the years. How?
In 1970, most people couldn’t afford a bicycle at 275 rupees. Now the same people buy scooters and small cars.
In 1980, you had to wait 5 years for a not very useful phone. Now you can buy one on the pavement.
In the past, electricity was a rare thing, gas even rarer. A simple radio was a luxury. Please remember that a US Dollar was 14 rupees in 1970 and it’s pushing 200 now. A Benz will always be expensive even if it’s made in India. But a Maruti will always be cheap.
I am not writing this to support GR.

            old codger ,

No , it does not sound strange and you sound reasonably right from
your angle . And even from your point of view , the foundation for
this improvement of our standard of living is now forty three years
old ! In 1970 we still had Raleigh , Humber and Rudge Bicycles and
many couldn’t afford as you said ! Yes between J R J and now , we
have seen our living standard climbed up ! But that standard we
reached thanks to the false economy and the bad management of it
is , now facing hardships for about ten or fifteen years giving signs
of no return ! Dear old codger , my real point about where you took
me is , we are right at the moment going through tough times
managing whatever ‘living standards’ we achieved ! Just read this
latest updates : G R orders police to stop Leasing companies
harassing customers with hired thugs after the Chairman of Three
Wheel Association was assaulted to death ! One popular figure who
has written on C T too , has reportedly shot himself to death in
Independent square ! I am not reading news but just warning about
the false standards we have established !

              Why why,
Yes, living is tough for the non-elite like us. But it has always been tough for us, don’t you think? I suspect it will always be tough.
I wouldn’t mind living in the 80’s with a 2020 income, but that can’t be done, can it?

              • 0

                old codger ,

Nice to see you back but this time around with a little pleasant
disagreement I reckon . If I would say we have only THIEVES
and not ELITES , I don’t know how you will take it but this what
my feelings tell me ! And I love the idea of living in the 80’s with
2020 income if that makes you happy because I believe happiness
is not always found in money or your career ! Let’s look at one
very simple example ! Just look at the age of MARA , GORA and
RANIL ! You can add Sambanthan , CBK and another few more to
the list if you wan to ! Now match it with the country’s lawful
and accepted retirement age ! What do they want out of life ?
Compare them now with , Bill Clinton , George Bush and Obama
and Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron of Great Britain
who have truly retired to live in full peace of mind !

I have to respect Prof. Kum’s right to unleash his verbiage. Time and again I have told that whether it is Gota (Now His Excellency and let us hope it won’t be His Oxcellency) or Sajith the approach to issues are authoritarian. In fact what the voters were asked in Nov 2019 to choose was a side of the same coin. So all the victories that Prof. Kum writes is true for Sajith as well had he become the Excellency. Again Prof. Kum drags the comparison of Gota with Singapore diluted and qualified by the position that he so hears people making thoughtless comments, unlike last time. Singapore in general and Lee Kuan Yew in particular are examples of nation building, starting from the scratch and out of nothing, except its people, disunited at the start. Gota has a record of a crisis manager and putting things to order. The two are different and should never be a comparison even in one’s wildest dreams.

When we were young my Grand Mother use to tell us kids a story. In that story there was a beggar who was appointed as the king for one day. He was so taken up with his position he wanted some one to hold a Golden Parasol (an umbrella ) over his head for 24 hours, even at night. This is whats happening in Sri Lanka. Gotabaya who was the black sheep of the family with no political achievements to show unlike his brothers Chamal, Mahinda, or Basil, accidentally became the President only because of the inability of Mahinda to contest again and Namal not being of age.
Some readers may argue that Gota as the Defense Secretary won the war. I do not agree to that statement. All he did was to direct murderers to kill and assault people who were innocent or who exposed his thievery. If he is such a ‘Ranaviruwa” he would not have run away to USA at the peak when the war between LTTE and the Govt was on. Like the beggar in my Grand Mother’s story, Gota too wants a Golden Parasol for 24 hours of Police and Armed Forces men around him to salute him and say “yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir”, that would make his day.

I can understand your limitations of knowledge. None of the other Rajapakshas’ other than GR would have won the Presidential race as people wanted GR only. Just accept it whether you like it or not. While I don’t want to reveal who I am, what I know or where I am, I personally know GR’s role, abilities and character which is completely the opposite prostrated by his enemies. This is why I say he was behind the elimination of LTTE and without that contribution, the war could not have been won. He will succeed in the present mission as well. You guys talked about him retiring and going to USA. Do you know it was a family decision rather than his own selfish decision? He is a good family man and he has an adorable family. he left country for a purpose and he achieved it. he returned back at the correct time when conditions are suitable to unleash his full potential. The rest is history. Just leave him alone. Guys like you in this forum are just irritant flies for him and he will just wave his hand to distract the flies and move on with a grin.

Prof showing three advantage points. Covid-19 is the only one i would say advantage point. The court case is one, partly, like Journalists’ murders, threatened the court and taken away from Court. This is the way they do things, rather than it is an advantage to them. 7M votes of last election was the worst one, People didn’t vote for him that way. They used Muslims extremists to attack Tamils churches and started a Muslim-Sinhalese Riot. One may not consider these as advantage points to them, rather they keep doing crimes to make the wind to blow on their side.

    Dr.KD,

Unlike in previous cases of police violence against black citizens in the U.S., the George Floyd case is unambiguous in showing how racism affects black communities. That has caused a real awakening among white liberals and there has been a groundswell of support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Despite the lies of capitalism, this progressive attitude among a large number of whites is genuine, and that is what makes this country livable even in the face of the racism and inanities of Trump’s base.

A similar awakening in SL won’t happen anytime soon. It will take decades before that level of maturity is reached.

There is going to be an interesting turn of events. The army and the so called special task force group will only take orders or will adjust and co-operate with MAHINDA,CHAMAL,AND TO SOME EXTENT WITH BASIL AND NAMAL.Other than that they will ignore all other ministers and take direct order from GOTHA.Ministers like WIAMAL,GONPULLE,PARASANA,PAVITHRA,NIMALSRIBAALA,And many others will find it difficult to carry out there duties if any thing allocated to them with out the co-operation of the TASK FORCE.Before long we can watch a very interesting HOME AND HOME MATCH-

GR is pursuing populist policies to achieve landslide win in the parliamentary election. It is easy in Sri Lanka because ethnoreligious nationalist policies win votes. At the moment Sinhalese believe that he is the guardian of these policies. Therefore he will get a large chunk of Sinhalese Buddhist votes. A landslide win will give him absolute power. This absolute power will be achieved via popular support of the people( consisting almost entirely of Sinhala Buddhists). Can you call it dictatorship; Probably not. Will it lead to dictatorship; Perhaps yes. As the saying goes “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.
All the above may be within the law. He is now bent on breaking the law to create fake news using the obedient armed forces, police and some monks. He is resurrecting the LTTE and organising attacks on army and police. Further a number of news items which evoke anti-Muslim feeling are also being released. He expects to polarise the Sri Lankans to help him win more Sinhalese Buddhist votes. This is very very worrying to the minority ethnic communities.
