Sirisena’s Triple Betrayal – Nation In Danger

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Three Betrayals

Gamaralalage Maitripala Sirisena, it seems, is a specialist in betrayal. He first betrayed his former leader and former President, Mahinda Rajapaksa. He had a hopper feed with Mahinda the very morning of that act of deception and was, soon after, seen at Sirikotha announcing his “sacrifice… for the sake of the nation.” Over 6.2 million people didn’t mind that because the beneficial outcome could not have  been achieved without that

Next, he betrayed his principal coalition partner and its leader-the UNP and Ranil Wickremsinghe. During the local government elections, Sirisena went round after doing a U-turn and attacking the UNP and Prime Minister. He waved a metaphorical sword against what he pretended was corruption. “I want a government free of corruption,” Sirisena cried,” and “I will not hesitate to use my sword against anybody, including those in the UNP.”  After all the effort campaigning heavily throughout the island, Sirisena managed to get a measly 4% of the electoral vote-although, by his acts of vilification he reduced the UNP votes, too. Since that experience he is called “the 4% man.”

The third betrayal is what is now going on in dastardly and shameless manner with the help of his former enemy, Mahinda Rajapakse. He has “sacked” the sitting Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremsinghe, and “appointed” Mahinda Rajapakse  to replace the former.

Serious Repercussions of the Third Betrayal

This betrayal has serious repercussions for the country and its people because it clearly constitutes the undermining of the constitution. A constitution in any country is the basic and fundamental law of the land. Citizens treat that with sanctity. This is why one needs a special and rigorous procedure to make changes to a constitution unlike in the case of ordinary legislation.

A constitution embodies the fundamental democratic right of citizens. It is the ultimate bulwark of freedom. The fair rules of the  broad political game  is set out in a constitution. It must never be touched unless it needs be and even then an ironclad procedure has to be followed-ofetn requiring a referendum.

One can imagine how serious it is  when the highest in the land takes it upon himself to violate the constitution. It is never done. However, Gamaralalage Sirisena has been brazen enough to do that. National confusion follows. International censure is passed. This is what is happening now. Not a single foreign country leader has conveyed the routine  congrats to Mahinda. I am informed the deposed Male leader has. Well, not even Swaziland. Normal civil order is seriously disrupted. Sri Lanka becomes a pariah nation in the face of foreign countries. This can have a negative impact on foreign aid.

Furthermore, lesser men take the law unto their hands. We have already seen how the Rupavahini Corporation was attacked allegedly by some Minsters of the former regime. Rupavahini went off the air. Lake House was taken over. Public fears of further contravention spreads. The stable environment is rendered unstable. Foreign investors and travellers get cold feet. The economy cracks and the burden of living of ordinary persons is threatened, as uncertainty expands.

Unconstitutional

With regard to the legality of what has occurred, I quote an authority: “The 19th Amendment to the Constitution took away the discretionary powers of the President to remove a residing Prime Minister. (For those who’s justifying it saying the 19th Amendment  gives the President the right to appoint a PM as he wants, my god, learn to read.) This is found in article 46 (2).

The Prime Minister can only be dismissed if:

1. Cabinet is dismissed (also the cabinet cannot be dismissed by the President FYI)

2. She/He resigns

3. She/He stops being a member of the parliament.

(Again, 46 (2))

The President can appoint a PM under Section 42 (4), only if the above has happened.” That hasn’t happened in this instance. Hence the President cannot appoint a Prime Minister at all.

The above means that President’s sacking of the standing Prime Minister and his appointing a new individual are both prohibited under the constitution. President Sirisena has pathetically violated the constitution which he has upholded at swearing in to keep. Mahinda Rajapakse, too, by collaborating has violated the constitution. There is a strong case to impeach both individuals in one blow.

In doing so, the President and Mahinda cannot plead ignorance because there was precedence a year ago when Sirisena tried to sack Ranil Wickremasinghe and install someone else. At that time, Mahinda wasn’t willing because he felt he was strong enough to recover power on his own merits at a campaign. Those days, Mahinda Rajapakse was perceived as a lion who could walk with head held high in stately confidence.

Mahinda’s Self-confidence Shaken

By now, Mahinda’s self-confidence has shaken. Why? Because, with the setting up of the new Special Courts the fate of his family members and his ruffian cronies are imminently in the balance. Mahinda’s private secretary, Senerath, will be taken up in a few days over charges of embezzling 500 million. Mahinda’s former powerful brother, Gotabhaya, will be next taken up. Others are on line including Mahinda’s wife, Basil, Namal, Yoshitha, his several cronies like Prasanna and so on. Mahinda himself is saved because of the legalimmunity that the constitution gave the President. The charges are serious- embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, bribery, murder. The sceptres of Lasantha Wickrematunge, Ekneligoda, Raviraj and the many journalists who met with death at the hands of  hit squads. A sordid story was Mahinda Rajapakse’s ten year old regime.

President Sirisena had announced he wanted a government that is not corrupt. He has, indeed, got it!

M&s is famous now for his political coup and trick ..
He is changing his mind as and when he wants to ..
6.2 million voted for him to stop all corrupt ..
He won his election in 2015 with UNP votes ..
Now he is behaving bad and he did not act in the national interest but his one personal interest ..
All what he wanted is to get next term ..with MR support..
That is why he did it .
Now .if both of you can not rule give it to JVP

I don’t blame Maithiripala Sirisena or Mahinda Rajapakse. I blame Ranil Wickermasinghe. If Ranil would taken the rule of law effectfully, now Mahinda Rajapakse and his family should have inside the jail for life or death sentance for the crimes they committed over the 10 year period. Ranil has to face the consequence.Secondly, it was a mistake to find a man for a common candidate who was slave of former Prersident Mahinda Rajapakse. Opportnism is nothing new, buying and selling MPs for billions is nothing new to Srilanka. The country is fully corrupted from top to bottom and our politicians are even sell their loved ones (not Real) for money. The country now almost going to be Chinese island. Our people are used to live with such politicians and no one save this island from these butchers

        You are right!
Ranil has proved beyond any doubt that he is a first class idiot.

Inside the 6.2 million votes which was casted to Maithree only 2.6 million votes are from unp (22%). Other 3.6 million. Votes came from other anti Mahinda parties as JVP 6 lacks , TNA 6lacks , slmc 5 lacks ,digambaram 3 lacks rishard 1 lack , hela urumaya one lack other parties like Mano ganeshan and fonseka and civil society and Maithree brought 3 lacks and 1 million floating votes. So unp is also a small partner of their victory, but in mahindas case 5.7 million votes only owns to his single party called slfp. It is very stupid to compare a huge business party like slfp with small party like unp. If the anti Mahinda parties divided mahindas slfp are easy winners in any election. But iam very dissapointed when I saw the way the unp MPs was harrased infornt of rupavahini, unp is obviously a pathola party which led by leaders like Jr or premadasa. Slfp is the authontorian super powers. Slfp please consider even unp is a pathola party please consider they are also humans. To face this tough rule of slfp a pathola party like unp is not suitable so we have bring JVP as main opposition since we are unable to defeat a business party like slfp because they have a vote base more than 47% as a single party and mainly their vote base are 80% of middle class and upper middle class the high ranking business class who are addicted for the business liberal top class capital policy of mahibdas slfp. JVP is the best choice for main opposition since innocent pathola parties like unp does not suit to face the tough rule of slfp governments.

I think “The Gamarala” – the President MY3 has taken the “Madamulana Bull” MR, who was roaming around the country by the “HORN” . This uncontrollable and untamed “BULL” has been made to SURRENDER to the REALITY of the county’s situation and DELIVER and MEET the expectations of the PEOPLE. He has only a limited time to do it. Can he do that?

We knew it would only be a matter of hours before PUK Hamu’s lick asses would be crying shock, horror, because this removes their walking stick from them.

But President Sirisena has done the utmost to save the country from this ‘gaththa’ to America (and India now to stay in power) by sacking his miserable ass. He had no energy to do anything and the country was going down the drain.

Why doesn’t the old foggy go somewhere and retire without ruining the country., and take all the Saimons with him to retirement?

President Sirisena has saved the country from India & US???

It is actually the opposite, now nobody can save the country from India & US. Uneducated and illinformed Gamarala does not know the future consequences of this stupid act. The country will remain as the poor begging third world pariah state forever. Knowing very well that it is unconstitutional, Mahinda accepted this in a hurry to save his family members and cronies from going to jail.

I dont know why this guy (Shy Man) spitting his verbal venom from a distance land. Is that because none of his paid writing made any mark on Sri Lankan politics, which most of us know is a unique phenomenon of its own. Never the predictable.

MR has been given the reins of the government and as such the charade of FCID, special courts etc will now come to an end. I too expected initially that FCID was meant to find the crooks and prosecute them, but to my disappointment it turned out to be a game played by RW along with Rajitha to deceive the public. So are these special courts that have been much hyped. They will be dead along with the hyped cases within the week, and Shy Man could, if he liked it, pick up the pieces.

      This is wrong.

Thrisu,… Sirisena himself was the person who stood against those investigations.

Sirisena showed one face but his real face came to surface only yestreday.

You too have been adding your 2 cts worth from a distance place. Why not you guys line up to go back tothe rascals-dominated paradise and beg for your titles ?

Mahinda is a person, if you would go on licking his ass, you would be godded by offering your perks. Plesae do THrisu… no need to attack only UNPrs for the great blunder made by GOOD governance govt.
Media mafia was still hadnely bey Rajakshes rascals, no mearsures against them were possible. since MS had been a caricature of JO.

All those highly abusive and unpredictable -16 memeber group had been waiting to mislead Sirisena since they had to be away from the ruling govt.
As we know President sirisena is not a respecatable and educated leader – even if hand-picked nomiation to be the common canddiate for last PE came up not having any other better choice to that moment., he had no enough expeirence about taking favourable decisions.
UNP leadership sacrificed a lot in the process of making him the president. People remind all these if they are born yestreday. Sirisena had been going through all the life threatening risks to that time. Rajapakshes were after him and criticised and looked down upon him attacking him personally. If he is not a Alzheimer patient today, he should be able to recall all the incidents one behind the other. Buddhists in general believe – repay should be a part of our human qualities.

Has this man Sirisena – any good qualities as a human being ?

To our eye – yes there had been frictions between RW and MS on and on. But both knew from the day one the duo had to get on with each other until end of their term.

I do believe it was the media made this in to reality. No matter most of the time, regardless of the accuracy of contents, news items about bad performances of UNPrs were repeated by PVT but Rajapkshe proxy media institution. Some asked as to why the govt just allowed those media men to abuse the freedom of expression guranteered by the govt.
Sirasa worked 100% biased to Sirisena, and Derana/Hiru abused their telecasting time promoting anything about Rajapkshes.

How can any decent person do this ?

Sirisena dug his own grave, fell in the shit bucket, and got into MR’s and his cronies’ trap. Now no way for him to extricate himself out of it. The civilised world is watching and they wouldn’t let both of them go scot free for demaging the democratic principles and the right of the people whose solemn mandate was attacked by them into pieces. So there going to be a lot of consequences to face. MR not that happy, and looks a troubled man, and it’s been seen in the picture in today’s Daily Mirror when the Chinese Embassidor met him. The saying is a picture says thousands words.

Why don’t you for a change speak about sordid story was Ranil from 1986 to 1990. 67000 youths were killed by UNP and JVP. Many at Batalanda killing fields run by your mate RW. Are their lives not important as Lasantha Wickrematunge, Ekneligoda, Raviraj. Stop licking man.

Some feel that MS was blackmailed. Maybe or maybe not.
Are we as a nation, in danger? Certainly not. We lived and jived dangerously for seventy years
Why this urgency? Well well well. The skeleton releasing season has started. The number from one side like for example the SriLankan Airlines cupboard out number those emerging from the other side.

Oh what a circus …… (with apologies to David Essex & the musical ‘Avita’) This is going to be more entertaining than the best sitcoms on TV.

What a slimy yob we have as President & now we have another yob, albeit a dangerous thug, as PM as well. I always thought Premadasa was an unrefined, uneducated politician with a gutter mouth of fish vendor, unfit to hold a high position, & Wijethunga, as another uneducated but harmless puppet (there are others who were marginally better, therefore, does not worth a mention) but Sirisena takes the biscuit as the most stupidest, dumbest, gutless yob who is not only unashamedly corrupt but treacherous as well.

No doubt the likes of Gnanasara, Duminda Silva, Sajin Vaas, etc, etc are rejoicing at the prospect of bright futures with their slates wiped clean. Roll on the good times.

Your handpicked Ambassador to Russia believes he saved Sri Lanka from LTTE loving UN world governance, Channa Masala Jayasumana believes he single handedly saved this island from UNHRC last month in Geneva. Dr Go, Sarath Weerasekere, Chagi, Svendra, Kamal, …………………………….. Fonseka, Karuna, …. believe/claim they single handedly won the war.

You think you have cleverly covered up truth.
I still believe you together with your local thugs, policemen, saffron clad thugs, thugs imported from outside, thugs affiliated to Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) under Cyril Mathew, … actively participated in 1983 riots against minorities. I also believe you also participated in 1977, 1958, …. 1915, ….

Why did former President Mahinda Rajapakshe sacrifice his reputation, dignity, and self-respect by stooping to such a low level and grabbing the premiership knowing very well it is unconstitutional?

I think it is the new special courts which has started to function. When sirisena asks him to do something he has no choice but to do it to keep sirisena happy and on his side.Even though he knew that the no confidence motion will fail he did to satisfy sirisena.Because of the criminal charges he will do anything that sirisena wants so that hoping sirisena will block the arrests.he knows this may fail too,but no choice for him.basil does not like this but gota also wants because he too is desperate with all these charges.By doing this he thinks the courts will get scared.

I am not anybody’s fan. It is no secret that I voted for the MS + RW combine in Jan 8, 2015, basically due to perceived plundering of the economy, kleptocracy and the insensitive display of grandeur of the ruling elite at that time. But what happened? The Bond Scam and so many others proved the undoing of this partnership. “Yahapalanaya”! My Foot! Both partners meddling with the law etc. shows that it was US, the PEOPLE, whose BACKS WERE STABBED. The economy was mismanaged to the extent that we have to recourse to some of the 1970-1977 import control strategies which was roundly rejected in elections of 1977. It is reasonable to conclude from actions that RW was greedy for power just as much as MY3 or MR is. The greed knows no bounds. Just as much as snippets of the story are being released of the Khashoggi killing in Istanbul, latest being the suppose telephone conversation of MBS with Khashoggi requiring him to return to Saudi Arabia prior to his butchering, all kinds of snippets do are coming out with the alleged assassination of MY3 and GR implicating RW. MY3 cannot be considered an innocent lamb and so is MR and MY3 cannot escape some responsibility of the Hotel Car park Bribery Case. So, the increase of paranoia of MY3 of a possible assassination attempt cannot be discounted with an increasing mistrust against RW, particularly when RW gets the chance of becoming the President to cover the remaining period of MY3 and contesting the Presidential elections as the sitting President. Not bad eh! Sum and substance is that these political jokers are playing with the sovereign power of the people.

“There is a strong case to impeach both individuals in one blow.”

You need 75 members to do it.That is the easy part and can be got ,but what about the rest. The constitution states many steps are needed for impeachment. Shyamon why don’t you show us those steps here one by one.You have not done that because you know it is difficult. Also what is to stop sirisena form dissolving parliament and calling for fresh elections once impeachment proceeding s are commenced.I agree with you ranil has no choice but to try impeachment, which is the only hope, but like in a game of chess you have to be prepared for the opponents next move.

i think sirisena cannot dissolve parliamnt till march 2020;he has to give it 4.5 years i believe from august 2015.So ranil has some time to fight back against this clearly unconstitutional move.Sirisena’s disdain for the constitution which clearly lays out the procedures for a prime minister to be removed will come back to bite him i believe. He could be impeached i believe.

  • 0
    0

again, further to my comment,if impeachment is an onerous process, then it would be faster to get the supreme court to give a verdict.Even a layman can read the constitution and see the illegality.

    ‘Sirisena’s Triple Betrayal’

Shyamon Jayasinghe, You missed to mention the fourth (4th) betrayal, the betrayal to the 6.2 million who voted him to power promising he will never allow the murderer, swindler, abuser, criminal Rajapakse to raise his ugly head again. But now he has again made the same person whom he accused to the prestigious post of Prime Minister.

I know next to nothing of SL style politics. What do I do? I read. Yes, I read anything and everything what the learned write. Shyamon Jayasinghe has written. I have read it. He maintains that 19A to the Constitution took away any discretionary powers the President had to remove an incumbent Prime Minister. Do I believe him. I wish I could. But, only yesterday, I had read what Laksiri Fernando, the other learned, had to say on the same subject. He ‘boldly’ said that Ranil Wickremasinghe cannot hold on to power, it is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Now Gentlemen, Why not the two of you thrash it out and make a joint declaration. Thanks a million. No, I’ll make it more attractive. Thanks a 6.2 million!

      thappu

laksiri is talking about how a prime minister can be appointed.he does not look at the section that deals with how a prime minister can be removed. That section is very clear and ranil cannot be removed by sirisena unless ranil himself gives his resignation in his own handwriting. These fellows are just trying to stir things up before just like the no confidence motion it fizzles out.Start with a big bang and end with a whimper.

Today 20+ Millions of Sri Lankans and the entire world is witnessing how Democracy is showcased by the Political Arena in the Island. One person with esteem power in hand throws away all normalcy, disrespects the Oath he took that he will never go against the Constitution of Sri Lanka, removed the country’s Prime Minister like a Stray Dog without a Proven Base, just like how Once A War Winning General Was arrested and remanded.

This clearly shows the power hungry politicians have no Self-respect or dignity. This will be written as the Darkest Era and the Biggest Betrayal by the Power Hungry Powerhouse and Marks the Murder of Democracy. This is a clear example of how the politicians treat the Voting Rights of the Public of Sri Lanka. How can they call themselves Buddhists and then grab the power illegitimately?

I am not against anyone being appointed to a position as there’s a saying “There is no Permanent Enemy or Friends in Politics”, but the manner it was done was absolutely uncalled for.

*This country could very soon be known as (Anti) Socialist (Un) Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka.*

Welcome to Sri Lanka, A Land like No other…
