Prof (Emeritus) Lasantha Pethiyagoda
Ever since foreign tourism was introduced to Sri Lanka, this epithet developed in scope and regularity with the ever-depreciating rupee against hard currencies. For poor people along the coastline tourist areas, this was what parents wished for the children.
Most luxury homes in fishing villages are either owned or funded by white foreigners or offspring through their often-dubious relationships with local boys, girls, women or men. No longer did fishermen, sculptors or mask-workers train their kids to follow their own trade or seek educational qualifications. Latching onto a white-skinned foreigner became the life goal.
It did not matter to poor parents if their boys offered their derrières to ageing gay white men or their adolescent girls to foreign paedophiles. Boys fare better as they do not get pregnant. AIDS and rectal tears or prolapses notwithstanding, as long as the foreigner is willing to set up their lives locally, even if only during the Northern winter season, all is kosher.
Wrinkled old hags with bellies protruding and everything else sagging are made happy by virile young studs who vigorously service them. The same goes for impotent old men who relish the local flavours in pubescent girls who they would never even dream of having in developed Western societies without risking long jail terms.
The villagers whose families manage to net white foreigners jealously guard their catch, not allowing other would-be suitors to approach them with their wares, saying “this is our white (may apey sudda)” almost as if he or she “belonged” to them. They are often treated like kings or queens, everyone deferring to them, constantly addressing them as Sir or Madam regardless of their lowly status back home.
Another common aspect of latching onto a white foreigner is to leave with him or her to the gold-lined glittering western cities they see on television, away from the sweat, dust or mud and mosquitos, traffic and daily struggles. Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, even America become halal for the star-spangled banner glowing in their starry eyes.
It is common knowledge that with these opportunistic paedophiles also come the latest most vile psychotic and hallucinatory drugs that ultimately destroy whole families. Until a few years ago, there was political patronage at the highest levels for the lucrative narcotic trade.
The sex trade is unfortunately not limited to the tourism industry. It is rife in garment factories where especially poor girls and women work for a pittance. Their major income is often derived from offering up their bodies on the streets at night, to rich merchants or other nocturnal blackguards.
In recent times, yet another avenue of illegitimacy and sex crime was exposed with the chief monk of the eight holy worship places in the north-central province. As another thug in robes recently remarked, it is a very common occurrence to service paedophile monks or priests with the often-coerced consent of parents. Although his remarks intended to dilute the gravity of the crime, it has been a norm that no one dared expose publicly as the saffron robe seemed to be above the law. It has been clear for decades that hypocrisy reigns supreme in our resplendent isle, where certain crimes are taboo while the most tragic ones are ignored.
With the momentous and revolutionary change of government from ruling class to working class power, it was expected that paradigm changes to long-held malpractices, unethical and grossly illegal practices would be severely curtailed using state power, which has been democratically and legally conferred to the people’s party.
Yet, there seem to be internal forces that pull against the progressive features of official policy. The future generations are the precious stones that lie hidden in the deep mines of society in our blessed motherland. That treasure should not be squandered.

Mr. Pethiyagoda should have put this at the start of his article. The depravities he’s writing about have been happening long before any “suddas” came here. But the practices were cloaked in religious sanctimony. Will even the NPP government lift a finger against child “ordination”? Certainly not, because its members are as devout in their “Buddhism” as anyone else. From childhood, they are brainwashed that it is an unforgivable sin to criticize the Sangha. Any reform must start from the schools. Why is it necessary for students in State schools to chant Buddhist gathas at assembly?

Oii Bhante Pallegamahemaratana
You are not against child abuse, are you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t take pride in impersonating an abuser’s name.
I wonder why people like you, who are against child ordination in Buddhist monasteries, weren’t against recruitment of children as young as 7 years old as LTTE child soldiers, adoption of children including infants permanently ending the legal right to their birth families and underage child marriages. Isn’t it the hatred against Buddhists that makes people like you target Buddhist monastic practices?
Unlike in the case of irreversible legal adoptions and illegal recruitments of child soldiers, child novice monks or “Samaneras” in Buddhist monasteries have daily access to their family homes, parents, siblings, friends and relatives.
If adoption is regarded as a noble act (Ref: ResearchGate), there is nothing wrong in accepting child ordination, which is also a type of adoption, as a meritorious deed. Maybe Buddhist monasteries should change the term “child ordination” to “child adoption plus ordination” to shut up anti-Buddhists and Buddhist haters.

Bhante Pallegamahemaratana / June 14, 2026
Oi Champa,
There are almost 300 child abuse cases against Buddhist monks. In May 2026, data revealed that 285 Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka had been accused of child abuse over a recent three-year period. About one case every 4 days. This information came to light through a Freedom of Information request filed by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).
Child protection advocates and the OCCRP Report highlighted that the elevated social, political, and financial status of Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka creates systemic barriers to justice. The NCPA openly criticized local police units, stating they faced significant institutional resistance before successfully executing high-profile arrests. Many local media outlets and political entities originally refused to report on or condemn the allegations due to the immense power wielded by religious leaders
.
Are you suggesting that poor parents should give their children to such people in temples?
What sort of Buddhism are you trying to defend? Did the Buddha teach that monks can get rich and use that money to buy children?
You must be nuts.
/
CChampa / June 14, 2026
Child abuser-impersonator- Bhante Pallegamahemaratana
As I have pointed out recently, there are over 40,000 unresolved child abuse cases in Sri Lanka with cases involving Buddhist monasteries at 0.75%. Why do you only talk about 300? Don’t you think the other 37,000 children deserve justice?
The Attorney General’s Department and the Courts are responsible for the justice gap experienced by the child victims. The culture of political patronage to criminals should be stopped entirely.
The Buddhist hierarchy in Sri Lanka never intervened in the criminal justice system. They have requested the Attorney General to prosecute ex-monks under their birth name. The Pali name given to Buddhist monks is only for religious identity purposes which is often associated with their lay name and the village where they were born.
.
You ask me “Are you suggesting that poor parents should give their children to such people in temples?”
I asked you why you have no objection to poor parents selling their children to locals and foreigners for adoption? You didn’t answer the question.
There were very disturbing illegal baby farms, child trafficking and adoption rackets in Sri Lanka which have nothing to do with Buddhist monasteries.

For decades, hypocrisy has prevailed in our society, where certain issues are treated as taboo while some of the most serious crimes are ignored or hidden from public scrutiny. Cases of sexual abuse and inhumane treatment involving children have been reported in various religious institutions, including temples, churches, and mosques. Yet these matters are often discussed in whispers rather than openly and honestly. Many politicians appear reluctant to address such issues directly, fearing a loss of support from influential religious communities. The reality is that these problems are not confined to any one religion; they can occur wherever power is abused and accountability is absent.
–
Beyond religious institutions, there have also been disturbing allegations involving self-proclaimed sorcerers or witch doctors who exploit vulnerable women and minors under the guise of healing, spiritual treatment, or supernatural practices. In some cases, families may be unaware of the abuse, while in others accusations are not taken seriously enough. In many rural areas, these individuals continue to enjoy significant social respect and influence, making it easier for them to manipulate vulnerable people. Despite the potential harm caused by such practices, politicians and public authorities rarely challenge them openly or subject them to meaningful scrutiny.

The author does not provide data or legitimate sources to back up his claims. So while such incidents do occur, the magnitude (which is what matters the most) is unknown.
On another note, does “devolution” (that great CT panacea) fix any of these problems?
At the end of the article, the author takes a clever jab at Buddhism. Has he not heard of the MMDA (Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act)? The MMDA effectively allows marriage at any age, in addition to the trafficking of underage girls.

At least Sri Lanka is still a popular tourist destination (just watch YT). And is not known as the world’s nastiest s-hole due to being dirty. I saw a video about a poor neighborhood in Venezuela. The faucet in the $10 USD hotel room did not have running water. Someone left this comment:

This is how his judging character has evolved. Regardless of the facts, he or she simply continues to put them down. The individual himself seemed to be unaware that if India had not intervened, Sri Lankans would have died of starvation in July 2022. China did not take it seriously, but India extended a helping hand to the island nation. All of this is obvious to Lester as he begs in Wilpattu today, but he and his mirror image continue to deceive us, the CT readers.

Yes popular tourist destination for Indians with money and cheapskate mainly young European hippie types who keep running behind Choon -pan Tuk -Tuk’s with spending power of US $3 day to survive during Sri Lankan holiday. Popular? Compared to which country?
“Thailand has long been the top destination for sex tourism overall in Southeast Asia, with a massive, visible industry in places like Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket. Reports (including older estimates from Thailand’s Health System Research Institute) have indicated children made up a significant portion (around 40%) of those in prostitution.
High tourist volumes (tens of millions annually) have fueled both adult and child exploitation. Pattaya in particular has been repeatedly called out by sources like the FBI as a hub with many foreign pedophiles”.
Close Contenders: Cambodia, Phillipines
Of course child exploitation has long been an issue in S Lanka, but the scale is nothing compared to East Asia and SE Asia (Phillipines).

As far back as the early 1990s, Europeans felt Sri Lanka (Gay) and Thailand (Girls) were their sex paradises. This was widely recognised throughout Europe at the time. Germans were crammed on the CONDOR flight to Sri Lanka and Thailand. Knowing all of this as fact, I believe that pointing the finger solely at Pataya/Thailand is selective.
Lester, attempt to respect the facts first before continuing to mislead the CT readership.
I am not ashamed to tell all of this as a Sri Lankan, even if our people say anything similar to that of liar Lester. Lester’s job is to highlight Rajapakshe supporters, while many of us on the CT-forum are not biased toward Lankan politics. This is about Lester the Nutless:
–
The irony is that while he casually throws around insults like “Toilet Nadu,” he also seems to think everyone who disagrees with him is somehow inferior.
–
A public commentator is expected to be neutral and stick to facts, especially on sensitive issues, but that standard appears lost on him.
Instead of making a reasoned argument, he relies on cheap insults and stereotypes.
That says far more about his mindset than it does about the people he targets.

Why should I be obsessed with pornography? I am married and we have a nice marriage. You say, “….who they would never even dream of having in developed Western societies without risking long jail terms.”
No, you are absolutely wrong. Tourists who visit Sri Lanka are not above the law. For your information, S-tourism, including child s-tourism, and organized prostitution are strictly illegal in Sri Lanka. As you seem to have done extensive research on the subject, you can help Sri Lanka Police to combat them and reserve the country for bona-fide tourists.
.
On a separate matter, despite some political parties trying to take credit, for so many decades, bona-fide tourists receive a gratis visa for up to 30 days on arrival in Sri Lanka. Charging them a visa fee is illegal unless there was a change to the above immigration policy.

Ms Champa,
Sri Lanka has significant potential to expand its tourism industry, given its unique geographic location, natural landscapes, rich culture, traditions, and indigenous medical practices. Unlike countries blessed with vast oil reserves or valuable mineral resources, Sri Lanka must rely more heavily on sectors such as tourism to generate foreign exchange and create employment opportunities. Many comparable countries have successfully leveraged their tourism assets through consistent national policies, long-term planning, and effective promotion. As a result, there is a growing view that Sri Lanka should place greater emphasis on developing tourism infrastructure, improving visitor experiences, and maintaining law and order in tourist areas to attract more international visitors.
–
The current administration, led by the NPP/JVP, has also faced the realities and challenges of governing a country with limited financial resources. While many ambitious ideas and promises were discussed before coming to power, tangible progress in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and industrial development has yet to meet public expectations. Many citizens believe that reducing corruption alone is not sufficient to achieve rapid economic growth without substantial investment, revenue generation, sound policy implementation, and experienced leadership. At the same time, public discourse should be based on facts rather than misinformation, as the spread of false narratives can mislead the public, create unnecessary divisions, and undermine constructive national development.
–
cont.
/
leelagemalli / June 14, 2026
cont.
It is also worth noting that many of the expectations surrounding the NPP government were built on ambitious promises and strong public rhetoric. However, governing a nation has proven to be far more complex than campaigning for change. Critics argue that several ministers who were presented as highly capable professionals have yet to demonstrate results that meet public expectations. Some individuals who were once vocal advocates of major reforms have become less visible, while others appear constrained by the practical realities of governance. These developments have reinforced the view among many citizens that effective administration requires not only good intentions and popular support, but also experienced teams, realistic planning, and the ability to deliver measurable outcomes.

The same is true these days for some JVP-NPP sympathisers. That has become a tremendous weapon for spreading their poisonous message to the public. Then it will be simple to create the bogus perception in the stupid-dominated island nation.
You might be getting this slowly after living on the island for over 5 years. Even though I knew Jeppos would never walk the walk because they lacked the necessary expertise and materials, I had little faith that they would enact even tougher rules. We’re all speechless today.
