Suspicion Of Muslim Community Is Politically Fueled

By Jehan Perera

Jehan Perera

The bombai-mutai seller said that sales were poor. People who once bought his sweets were today treating him differently because he was Muslim. He was a poor man trying to make his living while carrying candy floss on the streets of Colombo. My wife bought three packets, asked him to keep the change, and told our children that he too would have a family at home waiting for his return.

The panic of the first three weeks after the Easter Sunday bombings has reduced significantly. There is a visible restoration of normalcy. This is at it should be. I was happy to attend one of the reconciliation events organized last week. This was an Ifthar, or breaking fast event, organized by the Muslim Civil Society committee which took place at the grounds of the Colombo Municipal Council. There was large participation from the Muslim community. There were fewer from the other communities perhaps reflecting the polarization within society, each imbibing the fears, concerns and suspicions within their own communities. There was remembrance of the tragedy of Easter Sunday. Youth from all communities each gave their message of reconciliation drawn from their religions.

Coming a little late to the event, I had to locate myself near to the entrance to the Ifthar event. It was difficult for me to find a place to sit as I was in the most crowded place near the entrance. However, there were a few vacant spaces where members of the security forces were seated as participants at the Ifthar ceremony. I felt a bit out of place sitting with uniformed personnel. Fortunately, one of the officers had been with me in one of the university classes I had taken on peacebuilding. He introduced himself to me. He also reminded me of our last meeting where the security forces personnel present had cautioned that there was a problem of radicalization growing in the Muslim community of the east. The east is also the place from which the leader of the suicide bomb squad came from.

However, the point that this military officer made was that those who took to violence were not necessarily known to the larger Muslim community. At best they knew that these were radicals and behaved like thugs towards them. But they would not know that they planned to kill others outside of their own community. My mind went back to 1971 when violence on a much larger and more organized scale was launched against the government. The JVP insurrection of 1971 caught the government so much by surprise that in a matter of two weeks, over 90 police stations had fallen to the rebels. It is therefore, neither fair nor constructive to blame the larger Muslim community for keeping the secret to themselves and conniving with the suicide bombers. On the other hand, they did warn the government and civil society several times, from 2012 onwards, about the radicalization of sections of the community.

Sober refection

Despite the improvement on the ground, there is a lag effect with regard to the restoration of relations between the communities. There continues to be suspicion and prejudice towards the Muslim community. The propaganda barrage to make it seem that many if not most Muslims are acting in a way adverse to the other communities contributes to this phenomenon. Most recently there is the news story of a Muslim doctor who is reported to have sterilized over 4000 women with the figure now upped to 8000 while delivering babies. Those who work in the area say it is impossible that one man can do this unknown to the several-member teams who are present when such surgeries take place. Another example that did much damage was the issue of swords found in mosques which has had a tremendous negative impact on the psychology of members of the Sinhala community in particular.

During the first three weeks of panic, the media contributed substantially to the consternation of people by repeatedly showing pictures of piles of swords in mosques, which created an impression that swords were being found in a large number of mosques. This generated a fear in people of an assault on them by sword-wielding Muslims. One such news item stated, that “UPFA MP Mahinda Amaraweera questioned as to why a single Muslim MP has not come forward in voicing their objections against the many swords discovered from mosques and the reason behind keeping them. UPFA MP Thenuka Vidanagamage said that with around 5.2 million houses in the country that if a sword is found from each house that it will amount up to a total of 5.2 million swords.”

The same news item went on to say that “Meanwhile convening a media briefing Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thero said that it is normal for a nation who is afraid of the recent terror attacks to contemplate on the accuracy of the statements made by the Muslim leaders. He continued to say that the statements made on swords being kept at homes to protect women or to cut shrubs are complete lies because it is discovered in hundreds everywhere.” More sober reflection is that keeping swords in homes is not an uncommon practice in households of all communities. The impression was created that mosques had become the collecting point for swords for a likely Muslim attack on their fellow citizens. But the fact was that swords were only found in two out of over 2000 mosques in the country.

Leadership Failure

There has also been a deliberate fostering of fear amongst the people of further bomb attacks. The discovery last week of a parcel of bombs inside a school could have created another wave of panic, just as children are returning to their schools after staying away for fear of being subjected to violent attacks. In this case, it was fortunate that the school security guard had noticed a man running away in a suspicious manner who has subsequently been taken into police custody. He is reported to be a political activist belonging to the opposition. If this bomb had exploded by some chance and caused injury to the school children this would have set off another wave of panic and perhaps even have led to another round of organised rioting as occurred in the North West Province two weeks ago.

There is a campaign by opposition politicians to exploit the current fears in society to keep the uncertainty going. They may believe that this is advantageous to them as it will lead people to want to reject a government that cannot restore stability and law and order. The anti-Muslim riots that spread through the Northwest Province provide ample evidence to show that the riots were organized. Many of those arrested were affiliated to the opposition political parties. Opposition politicians were seen fearlessly mingling with the mobs even as they took the law into their own hand. It is common knowledge since the anti-Tamil pogrom of 1983 that riots in Sri Lanka are organized. But the government leaders appear to be balking at pointing the finger up the chain of command.

The government’s commitment to giving free rein to the freedom of expression is commendable as one important aspect of democracy. However, the government’s failure to take action against those who are spreading rumours and misinformation, and deliberately doing things that foster fear amongst the people is a failure of leadership. As the present is a state of national emergency, the government needs to consider adopting a media and communication strategy in which a segment of news regularly counters the false propaganda and disinformation put out by politically motivated actors on the media. There is also a need for leadership that can transcend the barriers of mistrust, suspicion and prejudice while reassuring the people about their commitment to the national interest and to the wellbeing of all.

There is no national interest but self interest that is driving this country to the dogs. Read the statements made by politicians (mainly from the previous regime), religious leaders also joining the fray, the serious example set by the President in releasing a monk from prison, ordinary folk taking the law into their own hands while the law enforcement turn a blind eye. Where is the Leadership going to come from ?

No need for Dr Jehan to get stress ulcers worrying about the Opposition.

Catholic Minister and UNP Stalwart Rajan Ramanyaka said that stock of bombs found near the School was deposited by the SLPP.
Ranjan Ramanayaka also told the Media that Bathudeen is totally innocent.
And Ranjan has proof that the Army Commander lied about Bathudeen’s Call .
And Ranjan has proof in his Mobile..

I don’t think the Bombay Motai dealers are broke.
Bathudeen apparently came to Mannar with his clothes in a Shopping Bag.
Now he is not only the all Powerful Yahapalanay Minister but also the proud owner of 3000 Acres of Lagoon Front Land there.

Best of all Minister Bathudeen has told the Opposition Party leaders that he will keep them at bay for the next years . .

By then Dr Jehan and his mates will be well and truly entrenched in their comfortable Federal Homelands with Double Digit Growth, courtesy of Dr Ranil .
But our Sinhala Buddhists and Catholics will be still struggling to earn a few crumbs in their Homelands run by Bathudeen’s mates..

        North Tamil Bro,

Your Vellala Idol Sampthar must rue the day when Sampathaer told Rajapaksa to get lost after Nanthikadal.
And asked Rajapaksa to leave the Muslims to him.

Sampathar hedged all his bets on Dr Ranil to give Sampathar both Jaffna and Batticolao to make up his Federal Homeland aka mini Thamil Eelaam-

Now even UN comes to divide our country, Sampathar won’t get Batti forsure.
Sampathar will be struggling to get even his own seat Trinco.

Wonder who Sampathar will back this time ..
Will it be Dr Ranil, Keslwatta Kid, Mangala Samare , or the Pawn Shop Mudalali ?…

wring articles like this is of no use because political leadership does not read them
civil society has to beard them in the lions den
get an appointment and go and see them and ask hard questions
for some reason or other neither the television or print media ever ask hard questions from the president why are they so afraid of him?

I think that the whole Muslim community In Sri Lanka is going through an APALA Period and they have become prey to the third class hunting strategies of the majority Sinhalese extremists while the extremists are enjoying a RAAJA YOGA where they taste the success in every third class strategies against the minority Muslims.
However, There is one above us whom we call the Almighty who is JUST though we cannot comprehend his justice with our human mindset.
The Ditta Dhamma that’s preached in Buddhism will definitely fall upon the oppressors and perprators irrespective of race or religion.
We will leave it to the TIME AND the GoD

Why blame only Sinhala extremists? Your own Muslim politicians are largely responsible for this situation. Look at how almost all Muslim mp in parliament defend Rishard who is obviously connected to the Easter Sunday terrorists. Look at how Muslims at large defend Hisbulla. If your Muslim politicians aka politico businessmen put 50 percent of the effort they put to protect Rishard and such to form an alliance and pressured the Sinhala political leaders to work towards ridding this country of Islamophobia they would have succeeded.

The Muslims are indeed being discriminated, targeted, and deliberately made to feel they are not welcome in their own nation. I refer to the innocent Muslims, who had nothing to do with the terrorists, had no knowledge of them, and did not belong to to any radicalized group. From the humble man who sells bombai-mutai on the street, to the shop owners who work long hours serving his community, they are all facing the brunt of the anger of the nation. Trishaw drivers and Uber drivers are now refusing to take them on a fare, and Muslims are now rudely rejected, and expected to take that anger without complaint.

The majority of Muslims in this country, are no different to others, and many of them have lived for generations among the majority, sharing food during religious celebrations, helping their neighbors, and the wealthy Muslim businessmen, have been extremely generous in their contributions towards the progress of this country, with the well known Maharagama Cancer Hospital getting a new building and state of the art equipment, generously donated by a Muslim, among others.
These hospitals are being frequented mostly by the majority in Sri Lanka, but of course at a time when there is a lot of anger, it is easy to forget the good, and people only focus on petty reasons, some because of racism, some because of jealousy of people doing better than them, and some because they believe the anti Muslim propaganda going around in social media. Those who are behind the ugly mobs that attack, burn, steal, and loot, do not realize that to attack the Muslims, is only going to take the entire country backwards, the economy can never recover until there is peace, and people can live without fear. Tourism has taken a big hit, because of the unrest and anger. The terrorists have achieved what they intended to do – unleashed anger and make the country a chaotic place, where citizens have turned against each other.

100% accurate. I would like to add one more fact about the mistrust towards Muslims: It has been growing more than a decade now. 4/21 incident only buttressed what has been already growing. MaRa politics supported by extremist grass-root elements such as Ven Madagoda Sumanathissa, BBS, Ravana Balaya may have been instrumental in building this mistrust. During the last PC election for the E province, MaRa devised a strategy of allowing SLMC , a partner of the then MaRa Gvt, to run a campaign solely on racism & then to share power after the election. His power strategy worked but it left unmendable chasm among ethnically divergent community. If there ever was an “Appointment in Kaththankudi” this should have been the one!
Sadly enough, the main strategy MaRa politics is still the racism. They couldn’t even wait till the burial of bombing victims to announce GoRa’s candidacy. Ever since the attack, they & their supporting media never stopped attempts instigate clashes between Muslims & non-Muslims. This suggests, very strongly, that, apart from the containment of Jihadi terrorism, there is an urgency in SL in constraining further violence instigated by MaRa politics!

Dear Writer As usual please do not try to earn few dollars out of this trouble. Each & every Muslims knew about this in Advance. May be not exact time, Date & places. They were in full alert with small fire arms ready with swords in case of reprisal. Now ISIS losing ground in Middle east. They may be looking new grounds in Asia. Local ISIS gang tried here to test local reactions. Their next target may be south India. If fail They have no options but to go to East Indies or Indonesia I suppose. To prevent trying again here we have to dislocate entire Muslim community here like Myanmar people did.We should forced them to go back to their original places south part of India. Looking after them well will be disaster for Lanka. I feel. They may try again to have separate location in South East part of Lanka very closer to Sumathra Island.Like LTTE did same kind of thing.

This my friends, is an Islamaphobe, who deliberately makes trouble in this country. I don’t know where he/she/it comes from, or who fed the poison, but the ignorance and hatred shows. He/she/It wants the Muslims “dislocated” from their own country. Perhaps in that Islamaphobic mind, the attacks on thousands of Muslims, raped, babies thrown into the fire, men lined up and killed, is justified. It is people like this who adds fuel to the fire already raging in this country. Disgraceful.

If you are not an Islamist you can not be Islamophobe. As Only Islamist or followers of Islam know the repercussions not adhering to basics of Islam.I am a Buddhists as such I can not be Islamiphobe. I can be critic of Islam. First get to know the definition of Phobia & critics. Critics are not adding fuel to fire already ranging. that is not our duty. My duty is to make my fellow buddhists aware of brutalities brutalities Islamic lunatics can be committed. If Doctor can make such brutalities in operation theater on a patient who are under the influence of anesthetic drugs. How our society can trust Islamist who are said to have committed every thing as per their God or so called almighty’s revelation looking for 72 virgins in heaven. These lunatics should punished.. capital punishment is the suitable one I suppose.

    Jehan P

For the last 10 years, right after the war ended in 2008, section of the buddhist with vested interest, and buddhists monk led mobs have been spreading hatred against the muslims, destroying their livelihood, destroying their properties, businesses, this has been happening every year continuously.

Why doesn’t the government, or the law enforcement authorities doesn’t do anything about it, i mean for 10 long years, has the country gone to the Dogs?

when the police and security forces doesn’t do anything whilst the mobs destroy with total impunity, what options does the people have, minimum self defence, a knife, a stick, a sword, how difficult is it for the people to understand this.

why does the Buddhist people keep on lying as lying is a virtue for them –

This is what the 16th century British traveler Robert Knox has to say about the Cingulaya in his book —

“For they make no account nor conscience of lying, neither is it any shame or disgrace to them, if they be watched in telling lyes: it is so customary.

In their Promises very unfaithful, approving lying in themselves, but misliking it in others;”

Even after 380 years, the case with the Buddhist is the same, the order of the day is ” just lie”

Jehan, who organized the anti-Tamil pogrom in 1983? UNP with Bondscam Ranils uncle
Who organize the anti-Muslim riots in 2019? The CIA planned, Saudi funded, ISIS which claimed the Easter Sunday Attacks with local politicians.
IS is a Global Islamophobic narrative to spread by CIA to promote fear and distrust of Muslims, which the racist opposition capitalized on. As Cardinal Malcom said behind the local politicians is the foreign hidden hand that wants to set up its logistic hub or military base in Trincomalee and build that supply corridor between BIA Katunayake and Trinco port.
The USA wants a lot of land in the areas where the riots happened fand no doubt has agent provocators on the ground

You forgot to mention the third partner to the axis of evil – Israel.
Saudi Arabia’s new buddy, and the nation the US arms and sends billions of aid too. Wherever you find wars, civilians casualties, leaders toppled, nations bombed into rubble, radicalization, and assassins going into other countries to kill others, even using stolen passports, you can bet you will find the fingerprints of one of these nations.

Truth lies between the offense and defense. Yin and yang as per Chinese philosophy.
    ..
When money replace religion, truth is close to money.
    ..
Ideology replace religion, then truth is close to that specific idea.
    ..
When hate replace love, then truth is close to hate.
    ..
When greed replace morality, then truth is close to greed.
    ..
We are all different but human, hence truth will always be relative.
    ..
Embrace the diversity to find unity, rather than trying to achieve uniformity and losing our unity.

There is terrorism yielding from religious extremism. There’s also rather subtle expansonism yielding from extremism.

Unlike any other religions, islam is not an inclusive religion. Either you are part of it (its specific sect that holds the power) or you are an outsider. Just like a cult. For Muslims Islam is not just a religion you follow to better yourself and prepare for the afterlife, but a perfect system that defines every aspect of life overriding everything else, including the law, economy, education & knowledge, and everything else. Since a single ancient book cannot do all that they interpret it differently. That put them in a broader spectrum.

While the terrorism is the turning point in the old normalcy that allowed racist and separatist movement within the Muslim community led by expanist, what Sinhalese and Tamils doing is resisting tmtge Muslim Islamist expanism!

The majority Sinhalese do not understand how divided the Muslim community is and that the expanists are against the terrorists. The terrorist attack led the expanism to reverse at least a few years. However, the majority population resisting Muslim Islamist expanism is a good trend.

Jehan Perera: Ranil Wicramasinghe and Managla humiliated army and questioned/ Arrested and jailed 500 Intelligence officers. You people wanted to cut down the Army strength. You people uncomfortable when Uniformed people are near by. but, you talk about Security too.
It says, there were 17 places of JIHADI training. Ranil says only 80 terrorists are there and 79 have been arrested. Maithripala Says there about 150 terrorists and 120 have been captured. Army/Navy say that 15 terrorists are trying to escape Sri lanka via the sea. Police say, there are 1000, terrorists have been trained. 40,000 have attended the Wahhabi lectures. Zaharan has warrants in Kathankudy. There are videos that Sufi Muslim youth had been attacked with Swords (it was in the news too). Two containers of Swords had come. Five people of Rishad Bathiuddin have been caught as Terrorist supporters.

The writer is trying to conceal some facts. It is good if there is a reconciliation among the communities. But this mad President is still facilitating Hisbullah with more powers on the pretext of development. Now look at a news item that mentions of a Muslim teacher by the name Buhary Mohamed Lafir Khan, who has pretended to be an assistant to a Hindu priest at Kiliveddi Mariamman Temple. The detectives have discovered that he a Muslim when he entered into a mosque with Quaran in his hand. He was arrested when he was selling Sim cards to a shop by the Police. It was alleged that he was mixing contraceptive pills in the Pacha amirtham which was served to the devotees in the temples. He was a teacher but married three times – First a Muslim woman, Second a Tamil Hindu Woman and Third a Muslim woman. What was surprising there are cases against this person on charges of rape of women. Unfortunately, the second marriage with a Tamil Hindu woman was arranged by a notorious Tam man by the name Mohan who could have been bribed & we will have wait till the investigation is over.

    Jahan Perera

Suspicion in Muslim community isn’t politically fueled.

It’s fueled by actions of Muslims.

The general belief that a handful of Muslims only responsible for that isn’t accepted now by non-Muslims because how can a handful of Muslims can cause such a destruction to life & property?

It’s amazing that some argue that every household has a sabre for protection.

I bet that 99% of households don’t have a sabre (may be except Muslim houses).

Why should any citizen has a sabre for protection when we have police stations every nook & corner of the country & for those rich can ask for a license to use an arm?

A sword in the present day context relates to tribalism rather than for bravery.

When the information that Mosques & Muslim houses keep them triggered they dumped them into wells & lakes.

    That’s the truth.

    Stop pampering Muslim community.

Give them a task to adapt to Sri Lankan lifestyle

Gotabaya Rajapaksa wanted become the next president, he wants all the votes from the sinhala buddhists community, to do that he need to create a situation, (like racial and religious divide). Most buddhists don’t practice(in Sri Lanka) the Buddha’s philosophy they just make it a religion.Monks (again not all of them).wanted political power and more people around them. For the time being creating fear, racial and religious divide, May be a next Black July this time against muslims are the main target of the opposition, .Earlier they targeted the tamils now this is on muslims and next all christians.

It is true that all Muslims are not terrorists but almost all ISIS members and their affiliates are Muslims. Thus it is natural to look at Muslims with suspicion. This is not just limit to SL but all over the world. I think rather than listing to preaching by so call reconciliation groups it is better to take every possible step to make the country safe. Threat is not yet gone. It need to be crushed once and for all for the safety of everybody.

The most to gain from this is MR because he plays the Race Caed to perfection but if he is elected he will be a liabilty and will be a lame duck leader. MR complained about RAW being behind his defeat at the last election but even if he wins this time he wont have a free hand and his wings will be cut.

No country is truly safe from terrorism. The difference in Sri Lanka is that elected politicians and others with power, misuse it to create hatred among ethnic communities who have in the main nothing to do with acts of terror.
Terrorism in the US, Paris, London, Manchester, didn’t result in mobs burning down mosks, and Muslim owned shops. These countries also did not have to resorts to curfews, for months on end.

In a country like Sri Lanka, all you need is a very small percentage of the primitive minded locals and you have enough to cause a riot. And many of these people claim to be Buddhists. Please….
If at the least these people educated themselves on the teachings of Lord Buddha, then the country will have some chance of progress. Until that day, Sri Lanka will continue to be a third world country.
Sure, Port Cities, Highways, Harbours will come online, but many people will remain ‘third-world’ in terms of their intelligence and mindset.

Real Revolutionist, you should not be called this, but Real ignorant dump idiot —

What did the Police and Army do during the last 5 years of MOB mayhem in different places of the country, conniving with the mob or turning a blind eye.

Yes, every nook and corner have a place station, but they only serve the majority community and not anyone else. the best part is the 3000 strong roaming mob is still free even after CCTV evidence.

You dumb stupid ignorant idiot, stop lying like all the others of your kind
