The China Story Can Bring In A Tide Against Former President; Will The Government Use This?

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Weak Response of Government

The New york Times’s story about Mahindsa Rajapaksa having got millions of dollars as election money off the China Harbour Company account offers the yahapalanaya government and the broad civil support movement for good governance a wonderful opportunity to torpedo forever the febrile campaign of the Rajapakses to return to power ever since the family lost in 2015. This campaign we call ‘Mahinda Sulanaga,’ because that is what the organisers wanted it to be. The weak response from the government is unbelievable!

It is so surprising that one wonders whether the government is either secretly backing the former dictator for reasons best known to it. It also may be that key persons in this government are also having dirt-soil in their hands that have to be covered up. Silence in response is sometimes a good strategy; but not when a glorious political opportunity is missed thereby.

Mahinda Defenders Pummel the Messenger

On the other hand, we have had many backers of the Rajapaksa regime like former Central Bank Governer Cabral and Viyathmaga organizer Dr  Nalaka Godahewa swiftly slaying the messenger. The latter want us to believe that the New York Times is a ragtag publication (kele paththare). Please Google “New York Times,” and this is what you will find:

“The New York Times is an American newspaper based in New York City with worldwide influence and readership. Founded in 1851, the paper has won 125 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other newspaper. The New York Times is ranked 17th in the world by circulation.”

An impressive achievement isn’t it? And a great-looking bit of investigative journalism by that team has given us this story, which is full of specific facts, allegations and  verifiable evidence. The story claims to have copies of transactions that the Chartered bank had over the transfer of dollars deposited by cheque to this bank. The story also says that Mahinda had given a portion of that money to a prominent Bhikku in order to round up the respected Sanga for the campaign.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Statement

In a statement issued today by Mahinda the former President denies the charge of having got 7.3 million dollars from the China Harbour Company for his election campaign. Although it is his job to deny, it is the task of this government to have this seriously investigated. The onus is now in the hands of  President Sirisena to use his famed sword.

Mahinda makes a number of illogical assertions in this statement. He states that the fact that the Prime Minister has accepted giving the the Port City Project back to the China Harbour Company proves that that Company is cleared of charges like this. Worse still, Mahinda also goes on to defend the Hambantota Project in a preposterous manner: “There was never any problem about meeting the payments for the Hambantota port because it was paid out of the profits of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). The Auditor General’s report for 2014 states that the profit of the SLPA in 2014 after paying all loans and taxes was Rs. 8.8 billion.” What logic is that? To pay Peter we rob Paul. Hence, no problem in paying the port dues!

Serious Implications

For three distinct reasons this China story is too serious to be ignored by the government. In the first place, if it is correct, the suspicions become credible about Mahinda Rajapaksa having been hand-in- glove with Chinese firms  in order to earn illicit money for favours over a range of projects. A China loan given this way carries a precondition that the recipient country must give the job to Beijing’s preferred Chinese Company. Such a precondition also creates a special close nexus with political leaders in the recipient countries and the Beijing parties. No tenders to be called for. Hence, plenty of room for politicians to build in commissions into the award. Another condition is that construction work is to be executed by Chinese labour-thus denying any flow-on employment benefits to the recipient country’s labour.

The practice is thus ridden with holes.

It is said that China’s method of subjugation is to give loans for any project without scrutiny. When it comes to payaback time, Beijing plays hardball and ends up owning a portion of the country’s land or owning special rights to facilities. An ABC documentary I saw recently in Australia, detailed this alleged game plan of China now going on in the Pacific island of Vanuvatu. The New York Times story refers to a diplomat called Rogdrigo who stated that  in the case of the Hambantota Project one of the guarantees that Beijing extracted out of our government was that we promise to let China know who comes into the port and who goes out.

Foreign Influence?

In the second place, the story if proven  shows that a foreign power has influenced our local politics in order to get a result they want.  This is serious, too. In that event, Mahinda Rajapakse has bartered away our country encouraging foreign interference for his personal gain much like the then reigning Kings of Sri Lanka who compromised with invading foreign powers. Mahinda’s self-claimed nationalism then becomes a hoax.

In today’s context, polticians and political parties do need a lot of funds to fight an election. This must be admitted. In Australia, the government reimburses election costs to some extent on a computation formula that is based on the number of votes obtained by the recipients. On the other hand, there are laws in Australia that require the declaration of sources of electoral funding and their deployment. In the case of foreign fund flows, the law requires that they be declared immediately.

It is urgent that the government of Sri Lanka bring in similar legislation.

Sullying our Sanga?

Thirdly, the specific allegation about giving millions to a high profile Buddhist monk for rounding up other monks needs digging in, too. If this be true, then Mahinda Rajapakse’s perceived image of being a “true Buddhist leader,” is dashed to the ground as a hopeless illusion. In the same manner and conversely, the current deterioration of the once glorious Sanga and Sasana becomes evident and something needs urgently to be done in order to reinstate that image.

It is very unlikely that Ranil will use this issue to batter the Rajapaksas. Ranil is well known for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Just look at the way he handled the “bond scam”. A clear explanation would have deflated all the pompous experts on Sirasa, but it wasn’t forthcoming, and the issue snowballed.
Sira will not use his blunt sword either. Nowadays everybody is buying insurance for the future. Gota on the horizon?

Old Codger, Ranil and Maithree openly displayed the Secret Agenda of the GOVIGAMA MAFIA Ruling Elite plans and the workings through DELIBERATE INACTION on the horrendous crimes the previous regime (Yet a GOVI rule) committed against the TAX PAYING population of this country. As the GOVI EVIL would naturally have it, they professed, confirmed by oath that it is they who are protecting the GOVI Brethren Rajapakse family members by HOOK and CROOK. Maithripala is the most treacherous of all the GOVI lot who ruled over us for the last 70+ years from the fake independence. It is Govigama Politics which is criminally preventing them from doing anything good to this country. They Deliberately enforcing RACIST ideology in the governance through which the DIVIDE and RULE mechanics work. Govi owned Media ( Lankadeepa, Divaina, Mawbima, Rivira, TNL, Derana, Swarnavahini, Hiru etc, etc) have a policy of being first Anti Muslim and then being Anti Minority to engineer the minds of the majority Sinhala population be always kept under their evil spell in focussing their attention on the BOOGIEMAN they create out of thin air with unfounded allegation aired through vindictive articles that appears in their publishings. ITS THE GOVI AGENDA which is the No.1 enemy of the people.

Sometime ago srilankan educated people realized that caste system in Srilanka cannot be erased from the minds of many people. The reason being, if there is actually a caste system it coluld be erased. But infact caste system is man made idea in his wiered mind. so it is a fiction. because it is not a real thing. That is why we cannot erased Caste system.
It is high time all srilankans come together and take action to remove all signs such as Siam Nikaya , Amarapura and Ramanna Nikayas and all ge names with their Wasagams.
Then we will not be able to say this man /Or woman is from this caste or that .
We can take cue from West. their names are like Elton John, rock Hudson Mary Agnes etc.

How China Got Sri Lanka to Cough Up a Port

      https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/25/world/asia/china-sri-lanka-port.html

HAMBANTOTA, Sri Lanka — Every time Sri Lanka’s president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, turned to his Chinese allies for loans and assistance with an ambitious port project, the answer was yes.

Yes, though feasibility studies said the port wouldn’t work. Yes, though other frequent lenders like India had refused. Yes, though Sri Lanka’s debt was ballooning rapidly under Mr. Rajapaksa.

Over years of construction and renegotiation with China Harbor Engineering Company, one of Beijing’s largest state-owned enterprises, the Hambantota Port Development Project distinguished itself mostly by failing, as predicted. With tens of thousands of ships passing by along one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, the port drew only 34 ships in 2012.

And then the port became China’s.

“The weak response from the government is unbelievable!”
This story is a product from ‘Spin Doctor’ mangala. Government knows that it is not true. Just a part of the mud-slinging campaign to counter checks from Alosius to UNP guys. Same like 18 billion Dollar story made up by mangala.[edited out]

Let’s be fair by all sides . JRJ’s open economy was praised to the skies by
Reagan and Europe . Aids ,grants , loans came flooding in . The West gave
its full weight for the first time to a stable economy that withstood 17 yrs
of storms from Marx, Mao and Gandhi ! Lalith was a thief , Gamini was a
thief and Prema was a rogue in their eyes ! JRJ was a dictator for them
even before he went for election ! Country slipped to China from Uncle Sam
heavily since 2005 with the arrival of MARA & Co . Civil war was a god given
bonus for China to step in with strong ambitions .The West gave money and
the East gave peace and both together gave us thieves as far as the allegations
go at the blues and greens ! Is it clearly not a power struggle of global giants
that we are caught up in between ? Look at this NY Times revelation . The
reporter India based . Journal , New York . Donor China , the recipient its puppet
MARA and the beneficiary of all this hullabaloo ? My question , as always is ,
ARE WE TRULY INDEPPENDENT ? I had always maintained a resounding NO !

WhyWhy, you got the bull by its horn. Excellent depiction of the current status quo we are facing. Your explanation falls short from identifying the GOVIGAMA Ruling Elite Mafia factor that drives all of these evil schemings that bled this country of its humanity, its economy and now lost its vital TERRITORY to the foreign and modern invaders. The dumb Sinhala population is the weakest link that is preventing from rescuing this country from the Govigama Zionist Agents who destroying this country bit by bit…

Lanka is owned by a cartel. Minor stoush occur but when it comes to the crunch, the cartel protect each other.
Remember our former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga. He is a first cousin of MR. Udayanga is wanted in Ukraine has been on the run. Tired of life as a fugitive he is keen to return.
Dayan’s appointment as Ambassador to Russia (if true) looks like a deal.
    .
MR claims he could ‘get down’ Udayanga to face charges in a Lankan court smells dealish!.
Was the Gotler episode a distraction? Basil pooh poohs?
The cartel win win and Lankans lose lose.

      K. Pillai, A good comment. The rational thinking person knows exactly what you imply. The cartel that owns and runs the Lankan territory is none other than the GOVIGAMA MAFIA RULING ELITE gangsters. They have all the Media houses under their control and ownership. So, with full ease they are manipulating everything by inciting one against the other, stealing the coffer, allowing their minions to rob right, left and under.

Instead of worrying about “stories” the government should do its job. Has this government initiated any new development projects other than continue or disrupt what MR started? The last time Ranil was PM his term ended abruptly because he couldn’t manage the economy. It looks as if this term would be no different.

CCCC is a Chinese corporation. Chinese Government has to reimburse every cents of the money spent on election. All checks written to election from loan account must be repaid with Lankawe prevailing interest. The Lankan rupee’s fast devaluation feature has to be taken into account. So, Chinese government should replace at 2014 rupee value. In addition to that, all loan accounts’ Bank statements must be audited for Chinese government’s frauds and bribes.

Ranil doesn’t want to hear Udayanga coming back to Lankawe. Then he has to reciprocate it with bring back Mahendran. So he will not bother Old Royals with NYT, story.

We have been telling Ranil is the worst crook, worse than Old Royals. Shaymon Jayasinge has been holding the snake on the tail. It seem now only he is feeling the mouth of the snake has been biting him.

By mistake people have been calling Ranil a cunning fox. That Afghani Donkey Ranil is good for nothing. That imbecile is talking about saving the country. So, he will not prosecute Old Royals. He thinks that Old Royals having a problem with America to place a candidate. So, he will not go to harass them on this too.

New King has already claimed that people have been trying to find some other ways to punish war heroes and he foiled all of it.

Anyway Modaya voters don’t deserve anything better than this.

NY Times article is based on the growing anti-China sentiments of the world. It happened that the story was based on Sri Lanka and the former regime. It is not easy to dispute articles by NY times as they conduct thorough research with proof before publishing an article of this nature. According to a later tweet by the correspondent Maria Abi-Habib, had tried to contact MR for three months to get his side of the story with no success, and she went ahead as in the US they do not wait beyond a reasonable time for anything.

Growing anti-China sentiments in the world can be found in articles in many recent news papers and magazines across the world. Although Trump is a president out of the norm, he is trying to control the Chinese influence in the US and hence the world by increasing tariff. Chinese businesses in the world can be compared to Walmart in the US. They drown the local manufactures by cheap low quality products and then squeeze the victim when vulnerable. Chinese are masters of forgery not only on electronics, but also in products such as high end shoes, bags, clothes and even works of art such as pottery and sculpture. All these are indirectly supported by the Chinese government. Sri Lanka happened to be such a victim along with other countries that harbour corrupt politicians in Asia and Africa mostly.

Gamini must be living in his own dream world to be witnessing a “growing anti-China sentiment”. He s clearly deluded.

Could it be that D. Sivaram is playing tricks at his Moda Master from beyond the grave? Just a possibility!

We, the general public, are at dilemma as to what’s happening to SL. Sick of hearing these things. Our politicians never think that they also die one day like others. Whether the story is true or not I am not interested as I have no faith in any of the politicians as none of them love the country wholeheartedly.

Aha!! Simon – beloved Ranil buddy – do not worry — your hero cannot take any action against anybody — even if this allegation is true – because he is accused of allowing his Royal buddies to rob the CB in daylight — and allowing those robbers to runaway or move freely in the country

    Dear Mr. Jayasinghe

The government will not use this NY times article for anything.
Reason: this is not news to our government, they have been aware of these facts for very long.
In fact since the day Mara and Co. left power in 2015, this government has been battling China for control of this port. In the process they got blamed by Sri Lankans for transferring ownership to China.
At first this Government thought it was a simple thing, but having read the fine print they were out of options.
Yes the Chinese had done their homework and done it well, it was going to happen, come what may.
So, don’t you think they knew what had happened, yet they didn’t comeout and blame Mara for the blunder.
The blunder: You simply don’t go asking for loans to fund un-profitable ventures, it is suicide.
The same goes for the Colombo port city, this government cancelled it at ground level, what happend, fine print!, we had to pay compensation and restart.
Like ‘oneshot’ has claimed, ‘all the info is with FCID’. I believe it is true. But Ranil won’t use that, that and soooooo many other accusations that are there against Rajapaksha’s.
If the government wanted to do something serious against the Rajapaksha’s they could have done it with all the Intel they have gathered at FCID on numerous cases against the Rajapaksha’s, some of which is very obvious and glaring to say the least.
The question is why Ranil won’t act against Rajapaksha’s, while on the other hand, Rajapaksha’s point fingers at Ranil for everything, all their mistakes too.
Rajapaksha propaganda machine is in full swing, likes of Derana and Sirasa instance, from morning till night are chipping away at this government with all manner of devious tactics and pure brain washing in some instances.
Yet Ranil is there minding his own. I can only wonder! Just wonder…
And Gamarala, I don’t even know where to start with that one???

Retarded Lankans are masters of “the theory of nothing “, You can provide any thing and every thing with facts and it takes only few minutes to discard it as absolute trash. That is the power of Lankan. I always find this hilarious when people go into heated arguments and debates about “who stole more than the other”.If some one took RS 1000 and another took Rs 990 then he must be innocent. The joke does not end there. They go on in high pitch to defend the so called innocent and make sure elect him/her as a leader to lead the nation. Now whether these facts are told by NY Times/Al Jazeera or Einstein/Newton does not matter to the Lankans. That is why we are known as country/citizens like no other”.

To conclude, The chines are known for their theory of ” there is some thing in nothing”, which is quite opposite to Lankans. They are always ready to fund our start ups without any questions. That is to say if someone wanted a yacht to be build when there is no water, they still encourage and fund with out reservations.Once completed they will sell that back to you with hefty interest (after all no one else is encouraging these extra ordinary ideas), Now the small print is very clear that the product cannot be returned/refunded.But if you want to built a mega harbor to dock??? your luxury yacht you are most welcome. So the Chinese go around the globe scanning for such start ups. No wonder all the people with right amount of white and gray matter have left the island to work on others start ups. And left overs will need such support because no one else is willing to invest or encourage our genius Lankans. But when it is for their own use the Chinese simply transfer?? the technology from western start ups.The next noble prize for start ups go to ?????

America is going to take Old Royals into its side. Ranil is too smart and cunning to manage for America. Further Ranil is talking about “saving country”. That could mean he would become as dangerous like as a wounded lion. He would attack anybody come in contact with him. He showed his nature to Ambassador Atul Keshap. So, America is going to take a turn.

Three Brother Princes are in America’s net, already. It needs the King. King did some work in America through PR agencies. That was suspected with Chinese funds, but nobody satisfactorily explained how the funds were handled. New York Times’ Clean through explanation brings some suspicions if just a media has all that ability to trace those transactions. Even Rajitha exclaimed that “ NYT has done something even CID or F word CID couldn’t do”. America has some tapes about Lankawe too. Now this Election case! Only time can tell which bird will be in which cage.

Mad , every time MR’s is mentioned all the politician can’t handle their bladder .

The latest news is everyone in Parliament are wearing Adult pampers ,this includes JO too, except Mahinda ,includes his brothers too , none of them can hold it when walks in to the house.

Mahinda must be seated and holding the tummy laughing at the news .

The present government are run by scared man &women children ,unga ,unga , give them some soothers, from day one complaining and criticizing The Rajapakhas with not an atom of evidence to prove a thing ,they could not even avoid a racial attack ,not one but two.

Other than them and families and friends no one has gained anything ,a family of approx four adults lived well with Rs.20,000 PM ,even in a rented house 3 years ago ,today one person need 25,000 PM ,that too just to manage .

    Ugly ,Horrible shameful

The very Government that was trusted by the people to eradicate wastage , racism ,bigotry , protect the environment ,stop theft have in fact increased it in ten folds more.

Look at the way the natural resources are legally abused.

Its heart breaking , why can’t the government do a island wide survey of supply demand and control it and protect it.

I beg the readers if you have the time and if you can travel to Matale and checkout the dolomite mines area ,and check some areas where there are cracks in hones and earth.

I assure you (its not my wish) that there will one day be a huge earthquake in that area .

Shaymon, we HAVE to hold the Chinese government fully and absolutely responsible for this fiasco, which in fact they enacted for their benefit. I recall that the idea of a harbour and airport in Hambantota came-up during the JRJ days but every capable Western government said it was a very bd idea. I agree that the Chinese assisted us during the fighting of the LTTE, BUT this penal interest rates as well as getting our politicians to literally “cough-up” a port (and airport) is corrupt and corrupt on their part. Public opinion must rise-up.

Let us not expect at least this bit of patriotism from these two leaders who don’t seem to have even a modicum of shame or honesty. Enlarging on the sinhala wise crack it may be possible to extract feathers from a tortoise than to expect honesty from these putrefied politicians. Wither Sri Lanka Sinhala and Buddhist Identity?
Mother Lanka is in a vale of tears. Thank you, for the write up SJ.

We come to understand that Old Royals will not be suing the NYT. As usual, they made it extremely complex for the Modaya to unknot it. This time I can’t put all the blame on Modayas, because I too am not getting anything of what I read up there.
    This is how it goes:
I don’t know what brake up between Ranjan and NYT reporter, she said Ranjan is wrong and further she could not divulge the source. One cannot dismiss the source simply as some Potato or Tomato because she has the copies of the cancelled checks too, it is said. Rajitha said NYT has done something that even CID or F word CID couldn’t do. That is rubbish because Rajitha knows for 100% sure it is Ranil’s & New King’s iron curtain that the investigative official could not break, but case was already broken by them. Basically many, if not all, reporters of Colombo media would have had a sip of that, but by fear they all immediately wiped off their mouth. We don’t know whether it is Tomato source or Potato Source, but Old King says he knows it. Chappattai Modayas flatly denies that they know nothing. But is from their files the F word CID copied and it is from the F word CID’s files the NYT got the copies, one would guess. Colombo Media says Old Royals are castigating two reporters ( Tamils?) for working with NYT.
Earlier there were reports that Old King has been saying that they all four members were telling stories to two reporters only to confuse them. In that case one might have expected lot of inaccurate info in NYT report; but it is not so. Now it appears that Old King is thinking that beyond all the stories they told to the two, they collected something additional and passed it to NYT; because, it looks like, Old King is recognizing source for sure for a bit, from where this info could have come.

Old King may not believe horoscope reading after the last election, but can we say anything about that two? Pretty much difficult on other matters, but on this, if the question is, would they have asked a horoscope reader “if that kind of documents exist in the world”? – It is not difficult; it is unlikely. But, in reality, the horoscope reader might have told the two that there are some documents like that are available, if they would like to buy. So, now the question is what source the horoscope readers use to make their cooking tasty?
Usually, there is an easy way to deal with the two-i.e. white van. But, here that will only save NYT, but no Old Royals. The complication here is the existence of horoscope readers is true. When one send a White Van, the horoscope readers may waylay it and send that photo also to NYT. One may not know in which hotel, under which garage the horoscope readers are lurking. Because of that unknown devil, Old Royals are not depending on Chappattai Modayas’ flat denial; so not suing!

So, to get the source the two has to be bar-b-queued on the grill in the 4th floor. The other word for bar b queing chicken is, (i.e. hanging the meat above, apply chili powder and burning fire underneath is called) extracting self-confessing. It can take easily 20-25 years under PTA. So it is not easy to turning around the witnesses, so no suing.
So, Old King is leaving the party (?) to sue the NYT (one way to slip out of this mess!). Old Royals are not in GLP’s Slap Party. It is the SLFP placed candidate. Does Old King is suggesting the checks are in favor of SLFP Party? As New King is the SLFP Party Chairman, it looks likes New King would sue Chappattais for bribing against his candidacy, but may not the NYT, who is only breaking out this bribe.

This is a great opportunity for The entire Rajapakshes ,especially Mr.Mahinda being a great supporter of The Palestinian Cause to undo the wrongs done to Muslims by the MPs to tarnish his name and to make him loose the election ,all those MPs were in the present gov and now have come running back to you .

You must reconcile with the entire Muslim community ,you will benefit greatly from it.
