The Saffron Googly – A Challenge To Yahapālanaya

By Granville Perera

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” ~ His Holiness the Dalai Lama – Spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhists

Gnanasara‘s spittoon filling Mahanayakes have come out to dabble in politics and governance. Now, there is no need for a government, cabinet, or a parliament. They can dictate terms to the President and H E Maithripala Sirisena would bend backwards, oblige and implement their dictates. They have become dictators overnight to the government on policy issues that they do not posses an iota of knowledge of. Is it the Avant Garde funds of Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe that is doing the trick or a threat of a Sinhala military coup by Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa? The President turned chicken by this threat, rushed to Kandy and assured the head prelates that he will bow down and get their approval for any government action on constitutional reforms. Another of his January 8 hypocritical promises thrown in to the dustbin. It’s unprecedented in the history of Sri Lanka that the Mahanayakes have exerted such pressure and a government with 2/3 majority in Parliament has conceded. This may be the beginning of the dominance of the saffron robe in every aspect of our lives that needs to be censured by all citizens, the Buddhists included.  Should we regret that Mahinda Rajapaksa is not sitting in the Presidential chair to bomb them as he threatened to do when they wanted to convene a Sanga Sabha meeting and issue a proclamation against the arrest of Sarath Fonseka. Remember that, anyone?? Where is Gota? Yahapalanaya needs him as a consultant for twisting arms or hold the gun to the head.

The Asgiriya Mahanayake, with his Sanga Sabha meeting on June 20, 2017, set the stage by censuring the Government’s efforts to rein in Galagoda Atte Gnanasara’s violent behaviour against the minorities. This gave Mahinda’s Joint Opposition another slogan to scream on arresting Buddhist priests and conspiring to change the unitary state of the country.  This was also another opportunity to launch a campaign to destabilize the Government claiming the constitution would be amended to favour the minorities. This is similar to the call made by the founder of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), S W R D Bandaranaike with the Sinhala only declaration. Ironically, a Sinhala Buddhist Bhikku took his life. Former President, Madam Chandrika Kumaratunga who now heads the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR), I’m sure, must be ashamed when she is reminded of her father’s racism. If the current SLFP leader, President Maithripala Sirisena is to follow the saffron robed dictates, there is no need of a Legislature, Judiciary or any other governance mechanism. Earlier, the Asgiriya Mahanayake’s accolade of Gnanasara’s action against minorities is as good as killing the noble Buddhist precept of Maithri in Lord Buddha’s teachings. Today, some of the Saffron robed thugs are worse than the Sicilian Mafia. Even the Sicilian Mafiosos who are ardent followers of the Catholic faith and the Pope will not promote such hate and intimidation against Christians or other faiths. When there are hundreds of videos as evidence of rogue monks violently attacking Christian churches, the guardians of Buddhism are threatening human rights defender Lakshan Dias for bringing such atrocities to the public forum. With the European Union and other like-minded ambassadors censuring the Government on the hate against the Muslims, the Buddhist extremist stand is exposed to the world. The evangelical Christians too have also met the EU ambassadors and briefed them on the continued harassment of the Christian faith. These will become the initial scrutiny for the UNHRC to decide whether the Government of Sri Lanka is abiding by its commitments. The Government’s two year grace is not to dance the devil. The Asgiriya declarations certainly are not going to be of help. The strong Tamil Diaspora will dance the devil during the next UNHRC sessions in September. The Christians and the Muslims will no doubt join them in Geneva.

These Prelates who are providing the manna for extremism don’t seem to have an iota of Buddhism in them. We also have a Cardinal who is using his cassock to create tension amongst the Christians, Tamils and the Sinhalese. He managed to get in to Sirisena’s inner circle by making public announcements that Buddhism should have primary status in the constitution. Has anyone challenged or denied this status? This is his cassock politics that has brought him immediate results with Sirisena and the extremist Buddhists towards the Catholic Church. This is an extension of his politics during the Rajapaksa era.

Galagoda Atte Gnanasara continues on a racist anti Muslim and Christian campaign at the behest of the powers that are trying to destabilize and topple the incumbent government. He has managed to hype up anti Christian and Muslim sentiment through a campaign of hate and terror. He is ably supported by other racists in Yahapalanaya, namely Champika Ranawaka, Wijeyadasa Rajapakhe, Athuraliye Ratana Thero and of course President Maithripala Sirisena himself. Are they having a nexus with Mahinda Rajapaksa and his Joint Opposition cabal? Their primary objective is to drive the minority votes away from the UNP showing that Yahapalanaya has done sweet nothing to protect them before the 2020 General Elections. The coordinator of this group is none other than one time NGO KAAKKA Shiral Lakthilaka, now turned Buddhist extremist. He sits in President Maithripala Sirisena’s office and provides the administrative support needed for Buddhist extremism. It really baffles me how Dilanthe Withanage, stooge and a wheeler-dealer of the famous Norwegian/CIA spook Arni Fejatoft and Shiral Lakthilaka who kissed the as…s of the Swiss-German entity, Bergoff Foundation could turn out to be such racists. Wonder what Shiral’s former colleagues at Bergoff Foundation including his boss Norbert Ropers has to say about the sudden turn around of their friend as a racist. Do not forget, Shiral Lakthilake was once the pet of senile G L Peries.

The Asgiriya Mahanayaka’s political declaration has shocked the Buddhist more than any other; yet neither the Government nor any other recognised institution has protested this extreme racist comment from one of the most respected Buddhist chapters in Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition, the title Mahanayaka is held by the heads of the chapters of all three main sects, Siam Nikaya (Estd.1753), Amarapura Nikaya (Estd. 1803) and Ramanna Nikaya (Estd. 1864). Appointment of senior Buddhist monks to the Mahanayaka position in Sri Lanka began with the establishment of Upasampada higher ordination in 1753 on the initiatives taken by Sangharaja Weliwita Sri Saranankara Thero during the reign of King Kirti Sri Rajasinha of Kandy. The deputies of Mahanayaka theros are known as Anunayaka theros who generally succeed the Mahanayaka position, after the death of an incumbent monk.  Next in the hierarchy are Chief Sanghanayaka theros who have the jurisdiction over monks in a region, province, or a district, while the Nayaka theros have the precedence in a temple or a group of connected temples.

It is regrettable that a person who is so high in the Buddhist order comes down so low to the level of a street thug and recognizes a hate campaign against Sri Lankan minority groups by this fascist Gnanasara. It is even more regrettable that they have now banded together to declare that the Constitution need not be changed as promised by Maithripala Sirisena in his run up to the Presidency. It is rumoured that former President and architect of the presidential system of government in Sri Lanka, Junius (Genius) Richard Jayewardene quipped that “No one sitting on the presidential chair would want to get up” when some moderate politicians tried to convince him against the executive presidency. It was proved beyond any doubt by Chandrika  Kumaratunga, Mahinda Rajapaksa and now Maithripala Sirisena that the presidential chair is very comfortable. The only ones who didn’t attempt were Ranasinghe Premadasa, (the LTTE made sure that he didn’t get those ideas) and D B Wijetunga – a president who was deaf and blind to the world.

Maithripala’s ambitious attempt at a second term is being well positioned by Wijeyadasa, Champika and Athuraliye camps through the Buddhist hierarchy. Outwardly, Maithripala is showing disgust at the Mahinda led joint opposition, but in reality they are working on a 2020 come together strategy where Maithripala will attempt a second term and Mahinda Rajapaksa will lead as the Prime Minister until his Namal baby is ready for some serious politics. God Shave Sri Lanka. As a prelude to this, attempts are being made to portray constitutional reforms as sacrificing the sovereignty of the nation.

The Asgiriya Chapter through its Karaka Sangha Sabhawa has declared that a new Constitution was not the need of the hour. They convened the Sanga Sabhawa which is headed by the Asgiriya Mahanayake the Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanaratana Thera and declared that there are more important issues than an amendment to the constitution. They have not specified the more important issues. The Council had also resolved that the foremost place accorded to Buddhism and the unitary character of the country should be retained and the executive powers of the President should not be scrapped.  No one has spoken about down grading the position of Buddhism in the constitution. The Opposition’s rabbit pops out of the hat and exposes it’s nakedness.  The need for electoral reforms has been accepted by the Sanga Sabha and advised that reforms could be introduced in the form of a constitutional amendment. These electoral reforms proposed are to ensure that they could demarcate districts where the minorities become insignificant. They also accused that the draft proposals for constitutional changes had been discussed with the involvement of NGO representatives who were advocating power devolution. They complained that the Buddhist hierarchy (Maha sanga) was not invited for any meeting.

There is no doubt that the Buddhist Prelates have decided to dictate terms on how this country is to be governed. This does not auger well for the future of the nation. The Government must take the bull by the horns and resolve this once and for all. Ranil must not allow Sirisena to scheme any more. We have experienced violence for 30 years and we should avoid another hundred years of violence.

Yahapalanaya accepts that Buddhism should be ‘protected and fostered’ while allowing foreign funded evangelicals to plant churches everywhere. Will there not be a reaction to such hypocrisy? The Mahanayakas are telling the Government to carry out its constitutional duty. The writer though has expanded all this to claim that they have become dictators. The Pope is a dictator Sir, the Mahanayakas are not.

The real problem of this country is nothing comes from the head of states and so called most respect Mahanayaka theros about the harm being done by Ghanasara the most abusive pseudo monk.
Not just mild statements on the prevailing racial activities directly being carried out by Ghanasara et al, there should be a loud discussion on the topic on and on through TV and other media.
It is high time to stand against these racists that have been making every effort to prove the buddhists in general would represent their thoughts.
Truthfully saying, not even many monks would back Ghanasara or MEGALOMANIAC Rajaakshes:
Gentle buddhists would only respect peaceful life styles.
These men hidden behind the SIVURU- Sangaya Costumes, being unable to keep control their testesterone mirror, have been creating new form of communal violence.
If anything would NOT work, the bugger Ghansara should be warned to wear a MAULKORB- around his mouth, not allowing him spouting any sharp words.
This ballige putha has almost tarnished the buddhist image this country maintained for the last few centuries.
Until the bugger would have been hung by his balls nothing towards the peace will be easy.

RC Church has left it to the free will of individuals, this has given rise to many Evangelical churches and RC are not concerned because they believe in their own faith and not threatened by it.
Its the Buddhist skin heads that are making a major fuss about it.

Buddhism is not a religion but a way of life as Lord Buddha never said that he was god. Now it has turned to be a fad, in the west Buddha image is used to decorate the house not to venerate.

Religion should not be a constitutional responsibility. To follow a religion, change ones religion or be an atheist is ones individual right that right is what has to be protected, not religions which are businesses and in Sri Lanka its where politicians and drug dealers launder their ill gotten funds through.
Who are the main contributors to these temples without any records: Politicians and Drug dealers.

Sri lanka politicians are one of the most crooked and corrupted lot in the world, the state of the country tells how well governments of all types have been able to protect anything other than the bank balances of politicians.

This Pope is no dictator. Am I right in calculating that the No. 3 in the Catholic Hierarchy is paying almost Rs 2 million a day to defend himself in a common Magistrate’s Court in Melbourne, Australia?

      http://www.9news.com.au/national/2017/07/11/14/04/cardinal-pell-hires-rolls-royce-silk-and-art-of-war-aficionado-to-defend-alleged-sex-abuse-charges

The money is NOT coming from the Catholic Church. Pope Francis has refused it.

The Anglican Church in England has also decided to be transparent:

      http://www.9news.com.au/national/2017/07/11/14/04/cardinal-pell-hires-rolls-royce-silk-and-art-of-war-aficionado-to-defend-alleged-sex-abuse-charges

From there, you’ll get a link to an article from the Guardian newspaper.

Such transparency is not found among the Christian churches in Sri Lanka. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith tries to outdo the Mahanayakes in his racism. For that blame yourself – not me, I’ve done my bit:

      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/the-thomian-pharisees-are-unrepentant-why-this-matters-to-all-sri-lankans/

Yes, that’s by me. The reward I get is being hounded by the semi-educated of the school in which I was born; more casual readers think that I’m really a Tamil – probably some truth if we go back 600 years or more in genetic analysis – which is what DNA testing has now made possible.

For God’s sake limit religions to the very important role it has to play in personal lives. Let the State be SECULAR!

But Muhammed, those leaders should do some good work for achiving peace among all folks. We dont get to see any fearless acts being carried out by muslim leaders in this country.
Just leaving it on few ,ministers, who are crooks of former BRUTAL Rajaakshes, they just enjoy their life. Not just allah would help in every struggle, so long you would stay lethargic. This attitude should change.

        You are dead right Samuel.

We wish Muslims leaders to strengthen their backbone not being servile to Rajapakshes any further.

Even at tthe time, Ryzanna under age girl was beheaded, their leader behaves as if he has no balls. Some of the Rajaakshe cabinet ministers just went for Shoping in Dubai instead of doing the due for saving that poor life.
In the end, Rajapkashe offered shelters to the victimized family Ryzanna, but none of them can get them the life of the young girl.
So is the case with Thadjudeen killers. We perfectly know with rumours being air, former JMO who let EVEN body parts to be toys of the hands of SAITM students, but the investigators not to have interrogated the bugger Professor on that matter or all the malpractices occured in that post mortem investigations…..
MUSLIMS but stay silent why ?

Why not call for protest marchs on that GRAVE issue ? Former prez wife and his son were both alleged to have made that MURDER…
All gods should finally punish these buggers Else the life for us would be no easy with them in the future

I was born a Buddhist & remain a Buddhist because I respect a religion that was never forced upon people & no wars were fought to spread the doctrine but most of all, I think it was very courageous of Buddha to accept everybody as equal, without discriminating on grounds of cast or gender, at a time when the social structure was based on a strict hierarchical cast system & females had no place. Even in the 21st century, there is still gender discrimination in some religions & societies, therefore, Buddha, in my opinion, was far ahead of his time. However, in SL, Buddhism seems to be interpreted differently. I can understand rhetoric of less educated & misguided village monks but even the hierarchy of the Buddhist clergy, the Sanga Saba, also do not seem to understand the basic principals of Buddhism. Since SWRD’s blatant exploitation of Buddhist Sinhala sentiments, Buddhist monks have dabbled in politics, & for some, a full time occupation, enjoying the luxuries & perks, including a salary, forgetting that a monk’s primary responsibility is spiritual guidance & leading an austere life style. After all, they are supposed to have become monks by giving up materiel wealth to end the cycle of life & attain Nirvana. I wonder if there are any ‘patriotic’ monks who have waived off their Govt. salaries & perks as MPs or as high Govt. officials, as a gesture to the burdened poor people of SL, true to the life style suggested by Buddha?

Buddhist is a person with wisdom, there is no doubt you lack a lot of it, though claim to be a Buddhist.
      1. Any religion will create a related culture when a society accepts that belief system. So the cultural practices in a society would not hundred percent tally with the fundamentals. For example in Buddhism, even having funeral rights is also not necessary, but in Buddhist societies we have funeral rights because it is a societal requirement. So what we have is Buddhist culture which is unique in every Buddhist majority society.

      2. Buddhist temples in east ( Thoppur yesterday) are vandalized by Muslims. but the government does not do anything because they need to maintain fake peace in those areas. So this is an issue which create problems.

What is all the fuss about protecting Buddhism? If the Buddhist philosophy is good, and it is, people must be free to embrace it or any other philosophy, be it Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Atheism.

The unscrupulous Buddhist bhikkus are not needed to protect any religion. More over what worldly education do they have, other than learning to recite some mantras of the past? They don’t posssess any real knowlege like science, technolgy, etc. What they practice is not Buddhism. They have become an obstruction to justice, good governance, rights of other communities and religions and democracy.

Trouble making religious extremists, be they Buddhist or others should be tried in courts and locked up like what the British did during their rule in Sri Lanka.

All the ruling politicians since independence are crooks with no moral values, let aloe democratic or social values.

Sri Lankan people are trapped in a prison of Buddhist religious bigotry and Sinhalese majoritarian supremacist racism.

While the Buddha has actively discouraged the formation of Nikaryers or sects in teaching people the right way of life and how to end the cycle of rebirth, the chief priests in Sri Lanka claim (absurdly) that they have protected the land from being over-run by foreign infidels.

It is true that they have advised ancient kings on good governance, but forcible entry into national politics on whatever pretexts should be discouraged, as they lack the kind of competence that government advisors (for example) would possess.

It will be appropriate if these Sinhala Buddhist bigots read one of the tales of Aesop’s Fables:

The story of The Eagle and the Arrow is about an eagle that is killed by an archer as he watches a hare, preparing to claim it as its prey. The arrow used is made from feathers from the eagle. As the eagle dies, he tells himself, depending on the translation: “We often give our enemies the means for our own destruction.”

Grmil Perera, you say “There is no doubt that the Buddhist Prelates have decided to dictate terms on how this country is to be governed. This does not auger well for the future of the nation” Didn’t you know that for nearly 2000 years until the Potuguese invasion, the country was run by kings under the prelates advice? Do you think all Sri Lankans converted to catholicism and other foreign faiths under coercian or financial inducement should revert back to their original faith? Like to start the process?

When the Sanga Saba insist on getting a special place for Buddhism in the constitution, in reality they are bargaining their share from the treasury. The negotiator is WR and the facilitator is MS and RW. Sanga knows that all three of them have access to the funds by devious means.

Lord Buddha left everything to invent the Buddhist philosophy. Sanga is seeking to control the kingdom to get more luxuries.Plain rouges.

What is the Sanga Saba really insisting: a special place for Buddhism or a specials place for the monks to accumulate wealth and take the total population for a ride with the protection of the state.

Granville Perera has spoken somewhat loudly. The no beating-about-the-bush stance shows his (and the silent majority’s) concerns.
Lankan Buddhist traditions has survived before and after the Siam, Amarapura and the Ramanna Nikaya were formed in 1753, 1803 and 1864 respectively. The colonial periods were the most trying.
We have entered an era when in all religions, priesthood is getting business oriented which will lead to active political inroads. This may lead to formation of sects – like in Islam and in Christianity.
Lankan Buddhism is facing the biggest challenge now and it is the duty of the heads of the Nikayas to bridle wayward monks.

There is no smoke without fire. One should analyse deeply, the reasons for the actions of Gnanasara Thero. He is against receiving huge amount of money from wahabists and converting people because of their poverty. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the culprit who is making the whole world in turmoil.

      Dear Singing Fish,

If he has issues aren’t there legal ways to handle those instead of threats, intimidation, and violence? How can you explain the allegation by your thero about the undergarments of women , or the free toffees issues. And why is it that Muslim businesses are targeted? And why disparage Islam and all Muslims in Sri Lanka?

This is not about the Saudi Money. This is Sinhala Chauvinism. This happened after independence against the Tamils. As the Sinhalese won the war now they are targeting Muslims. The idea seems to be we taught a lesson to Tamils now we are going to teach a lesson to the Muslims. Simple as that.

I wonder whether this situation would have arisen if the LTTE was till ruling the roost.

Bring back LTTE. We will teach them a better lesson than what they got last time at Nandikadal. Tamil terrorists bombed Dalada Maligawa and Sri Maha Bodhiya but Mahanayake’s did not run.

Geopolitics have changed. China, India, Pakistan, USA are not going to arm Sri Lanka to the teeth again and provide manpower and intelligence,

Granville Perera: Tell me why Ven. ghanasara can not talk about what is happening to Sinhala buddhists in Sri lanka and why you christians criticize a monk who talks his mind. As you people talk about Democracy and freedom of expresion, tell me why when a monk talks it is HATE SPeeh, when Tamils fight for eelam you people scream for federal solution ?. christian Hate speech has now extended even to Mahanayakes, tell me why they should not talk only christians and muslim should run Sri lanka the way they want. I hope you won’t be chicken out.

Granville Perera: As a christian you quote Dalai Lama for your survival. Why did not you use a quote from Your Creator god ? I know even the Humanitarian Jesus who supposed to be Greeek buddhist monk is also you god’s messenger. You people are fully against the monk who talks about christian and muslims subversive activities, now you have extended it to Buddhist prelates Too, YOu want to dismantle buddhism and spread Evangelical christianity which is, As I have seen use booze, women and half naked bodies to spread the religion. It is all business. Tell me Have not buddhists allowed too much to you guys wreck the country and to destroy buddhism. Don’t you think, it is time getting late to address the issue ? One good point is, In europe, Some parts of North america, christianity is extinct. Huge Cathedrals are tourist hotels, housing schmes etc., So, we know how it ends in Sri lanka. When the tide turns, you wont believe it. YOu think can be given a rupee value. YOu don’t understand what Standards Sri lanka enjoy. The best thing is go to North america and see how they are suffering because of the lack of spiritual values. There churches think showing womens half naked bodies, dancing and booze is for god’s awakening.

      Dumb Jimmy,
“The best thing is go to North america and see how they are suffering because of the lack of spiritual values. “
Why are you living there then? Why you don’t come here and yoin your Mahanayakes?

Jimmy, you fight a lost cause. Buddhism is getting defunct (out of fashion) day by day. and the temples drying up with less and less people attending.. These monks are setting bad example by getting involved in politics. A very bad image is also being created due to wanted thugs wrapped in Saffron robes (Monks clothing), whose only grim get ready to set fire, kill, destroy and capture land belonging to Muslims, and the way it is being promoted and practiced in this country. It is the cast system which first corrupted Buddhism (started with SWRD) and it is this same mindset that will ultimately destroy Buddhism at its core level. Temple Monks should keep out of politics and have their own personal views, that’s alright.

Let’s hope at least by now our political leaders realize that if you fail to address a problem and nip it in the bud just because it’s the minority that was getting affected, the same will destroy you sooner or a later.

Earlier it’s was only ganasara they had to deal with- a small fry with enough evidence to put him behind bars, then the nation would have respected the government for the reign of rule of law, but the yahapalana thought this will do no harm but only good at the expense of the minorities, now they have to fight the mahanayakes, a much bigger monster.

Ganasara has accomplished his goal well and would have earned a big bonus from his political and NGO masters, and also would have sent it France to upkeep his illegal family there.

The yahapalana is turning out to be pathetic and utterly stupid

What do monks other than mahanayakes think about the issues mentioned? Do they have a voice?

Now we see the third strand of Buddhism,ie institutional or hierarchical Buddhism.

The first being philosophical, second being Sinhala Buddhism

In 1959 there were only Venarables like Bhuddarahita & Somarama put an end to the founding SLFP leader who did so much to uplift the majority and who aborted his pact that promised to address the minority grievances.

Lord Buddha from up knows there is no place for real Buddhism in SL . Probably that is the reason he called prematurely , for Ven Sobitha Thero to be with him.

Sadly for SL Maha Sangha is heading in the wrong direction again.

Now tell me whether lord Buddha is a god to call sobitha to be with him. Height of Buddhist hypocracy

“Now, there is no need for a government, cabinet, or a parliament. They can dictate terms to the President and H E Maithripala Sirisena would bend backwards, oblige and implement their dictates. They have become dictators overnight to the government on policy issues that they do not posses an iota of knowledge of.”
The Government is representing people of the country. Do you think people have given authority to the Government to do any damn thing? If they are not doing the right thing it is the responsibility of citizens to express their views. That is a Democratic right of the citizens. Monks are citizens of the country. They expressed their concerns over an important issue. They did not dictate as you idiot suggest. How the hell you know they have no iota of knowledge on Constitution. Do you thing Sinhalese should just shut their mouths and wait when Vigneshwaran says he wants land rights and Sinhalese are not welcomed in the North. The problem with Tamil politicians is they think peace should be achieved on their terms. Tamil politicians are not asking equal status. They have been asking for ‘More Than Equal’ status which is not acceptable to majority. If Tamils can demand a new constitution devolving more powers to them Sinhalese also have a right to ask for a constitution scrapping Provincial Councils. PCs are not something Sri Lankans wanted. That is something pushed through the throat of JRJ by that idiot Rajeeev.

“It is even more regrettable that they have now banded together to declare that the Constitution need not be changed as promised by Maithripala Sirisena in his run up to the Presidency.”

President promised many things but he has not fulfilled those promises. There is no harm adding one more to the list.

The bloody monks are eating off us, don’t do any constructive work, engage in all the nefarious activities in their kingdom and now want to dabble in national politics by promoting the sadist Rajapaksa. Its time that we Buddhists robed censured and we live as Sri Lankans

The GOSL is a marriage of convenience to get power there is no govt but factions within and Gnanasara too is a partner . Your christian force is finding it difficult to transform this country to like your god and we thank the safron robes to protect this nation from the likes of you, who were thinkin that there NGO sponsored regime change to deliver a christisn state. From the very start it harrased the buddhist clergy jailing them and rediculing them even thd temple elephants were not spared to propogate your filthy doctrine, as we are fully aware how it was done by trying to distroy the buddhist culture and its people when the portugese arrived. Widraw you filthy article and show respect to the only religion that has existed on this island for 2500 years. Dont generalise as we know the filthy christian priests who supported the LTTE while bodies were hanging on tree tops and masacaring young safron robe priests on their way to worship. The christisn church is upto it again , thougt it had a regime change they could manipulate.

The barrage of derogatory insults thrown at the Venerable Sangha by anti Buddhist extremists is in itself a clear indication that Buddhism must be protected from these fringe fanatical elements who are heavily funded by those with vested interests .

Granville talks about governance and government. Is there any in SL today?

Granville sounds like an evangelical Christian fundamentalist. He doesn’t seem to know even in 1815 when SL was completely came under the British, they still gave special assurances to Buddhism’s status in the 1815 treaty (though the British may not have practiced it). Because they understood the social, cultural significance of it. Now the brown colour lap dogs of those Western imperialists try to bark at the Buddhist clergy thinking they could go past their colonial masters and subjugate the cultural core of Sri Lanka. The Catholic Cardinal seems to possess much better understanding of the cultural core than these mongal fundamentalists.
