The “Terminator” Was Chosen For A Different Reason

By Mangala Samaraweera

Mangala Samaraweera | Finance Minister

Earlier today, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced the presidential candidate for his family’s new political party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). For weeks he refused to confirm the circulating rumours about who the candidate would be. I have known Mahinda Rajapaksa for many years. We worked together side-by-side in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) under President Kumaratunga. We fought campaigns together and we won elections together. I have served in his Cabinet.

When I left Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government in 2006, he was a different man than I had once known. As President, his priority had become enriching, protecting and empowering his own family, not his country. Once upon a time, he was a true son of the soil, and a man whose heart beat as one with the ordinary citizens of Sri Lanka.

I wondered, after he was defeated in January 2015 by over 400,000 votes, and retreated to Medamulane, whether he had reflected and learnt a lesson from the error of his ways. I wondered if he regretted putting his family in charge of the state machinery and standing idly by as the nation’s coffers were robbed dry, and our journalists were bundled into white vans never to be seen again. I wondered if he regretted buttressing his political position by inciting racial hatred across Sri Lanka, first against Tamils, and later against Muslims.

In October 2018, when he conspired to orchestrate a coup d’état and illegally seize power, I realized that these were not the lessons he learned. The rule of law meant nothing to him. Democracy was only a buzzword to thunder from a stage. When Parliament stood against him, he had his minions try to destroy Parliament. It was only when the courts had the courage to stand up to him that Mahinda Rajapaksa finally aborted his coup and backed down.

Today I realized the terrible truth about what Mahinda Rajapaksa has really learned during his time in opposition. He does not feel that he gave his family too much power. He clearly believes that he did not give his family enough power. He does not feel that his merry men pilfered one too many million rupees or public money. He believes there is more left to milk dry. He does not feel that he terrorized this country too much. He clearly believes that he did not terrorize this country enough. He is not worried that he overly threatened the independence of the judiciary. He believes he should not have allowed any independence in the judiciary at all.

He does not regret the disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda, the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge or the abduction and torture of Keith Noyahr and countless other journalists. He wants any remaining independent journalists to know that if they cross the man who committed those crimes, they will be next.

These are the lessons that Mahinda Rajapaksa has learnt. If not, he would not have announced today as his presidential candidate, a man who is on trial in two courts, one for corruption of over Rs 11 billion, and another for stealing over Rs 33 million in our taxpayer rupees to build a statue of his parents. He would not have announced as his chosen successor the man who has gloated about the murders of journalists, who has jailed real war heroes like Sarath Fonseka, and who has tried to bend the judiciary to his will.

After nearly five years in opposition, if Mahinda Rajapaksa’s message to the people is that one of his brothers should be president, he himself should be prime minister, another brother should be Speaker, a fourth brother put in charge of the economy and his son put in place as his chosen successor, that tells us all we need to know: in the mind of Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka, its land and its people are destined to be the private property of the Rajapaksa family.

Sadly, there are many Sri Lankans, whose hatred for certain segments of our country, in particular religious and ethnic minorities, lead them to gravitate towards the vision of the Rajapaksa family. They will gladly be second class citizens in a Rajapaksa family dynasty, so long as Tamils, Muslims, Christians and others are forced to live as third-class citizens. Others will support the Rajapaksas out of greed, or to escape prosecution for the sins of their part.

From an electoral standpoint, it never mattered who the Rajapaksa candidate for president was. That is my feeling about the announcement of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. I am personally ashamed on behalf of my country to have to concede that for the first time in our history, a serious frontrunner for president is an alleged criminal whose very citizenship of this country is in question. But the question never was “will it be a Rajapsaksa?”. No. It was always “which Rajapaksa will it be?”.

Truth be told, the entire family represents thuggery, corruption, deception and a flagrant disdain for democratic values and independent institutions. The candidate is a figurehead. The choice of Gotabaya had nothing to do with trying to win more votes. If at all, such a choice would diminish their electoral prospects among liberal voters and minorities. The “terminator” was chosen for a different reason: to terrify the media, police officers, judges and public servants with a simple message: cross us at your peril.

It is a desperate tactic. It will fail. Politics is a distance runner’s race, not a sprint. The person at the front of the pack in a marathon rarely wins the race. Only amateurs jump up in front. What Mahinda Rajapaksa has done is shown the entire country, many months before an election, what his priorities are, what his assets are, and where his loyalties lie. The answers? Rajapaksas, Rajapaksas and Rajapaksas.

The next president of Sri Lanka will not be Gotabaya Rajapaksa or any Rajapaksa. The next president of this country will not be an alleged criminal who has the blood of countless journalists and innocents on their hands. Our next president will be a Sri Lankan citizen, born in Sri Lanka who never fled this country or swore allegiance to another land. The next president of Sri Lanka will be the person democratically selected by the United National Party and its allies to stand on a platform of democracy, safeguarding the judiciary, public service and other independent institutions and putting ordinary citizens before any family. Our candidate will be the next president of Sri Lanka. Who is our candidate?

He is the man who will unite the forces of transparent, secular, liberal democracy across our country, who will go toe-to-toe with any number of Rajapaksas and their white vans, will rally the people of Sri Lanka against tyranny and oppression, and will win.

People are very happy hearing this announcement, why? During this four & a half year, people didn’t feel there is a leader, so now they don’t care who it is, but they desperately need a leader. This was exactly the situation during last presidential election where people didn’t care who, but wanted a change from MR. Ranil is a curse for not just UNP, but the whole nation

        Fathima,
Your accusation against Ranil is like blaming the specialist for putting a seriously ill patient on a very unpleasant but necessary treatment schedule after taking over from an inexperienced doctor. What would you do except cutting expenses where ever possible & find a way to increase income to pay down debts if you suddenly realize that family budget is in a serious trouble by borrowing & overspending?

Considering the huge challenges in front of him since he took over the Gvt – not having enough income to pay down annual loan plus interest instalments on time; at the same time, meeting the monthly Gvt expenses along with so much subsidies; facing natural disasters such as two years of droughts that caused crop failures & flood hazards; Rising $ values causing debt services & imports more expensive; and, at the same time rifts within UNP & SLFP putting the majority of the Gvt at a serious risk – I honestly think that Ranil proved to have excellent leadership skills in managing them for four years.

Why not appreciate the achievements on the democratic & judiciary front? Also, why not appreciate the regaining of international respect that was ruined under MaRa? I think you are angry b’cos you are influenced by the negative media that kept attacking Ranil for losing their expectations- Hiru wants Duminda Silva out of life imprisonment; Derana wants stock market swindling back; Sirasa wants its agents in the national lists; etc. This media went so far as to put the blame of Easter bombing also on Ranil when it was very clear that the president is to take full blame!

I think that sensible citizens should be careful not to be swayed by Goebbel’s law – if repeated enough, even obvious lies could sway people’s mind!

          D. P. – R. Premadasa said 10 thousands houses for the needy, and people said he was going to bring rice from the moon. But he achieved it successfully. RW can’t fulfill some simple things; where is VW factory? What happened to free WiFi? Tabs for students? Then what about other serious promises made in 2015? What about destroying UNP? Why not wanting to give up UNP’s leadership despite record number of election losses?

Election madness. Sri Lanka is slipping into dictatorship….If goata come to power, what will happen next. he will make his family rule in Sri Lanka for ever.. Sri Lanka will become monarch soon: Mahinda will be made as a king soon..His statue will erected all over the coutnry. Goata will pass on his power to his son. Mahinda wife will become second lady in Sri Lanka. One more time Mahinda family will loot all public money with or without immunity. All journalists will go out of the country except his cohorts and stooges.. Academic freedom will be wiped out,, Drug kings will mushroom once again… Military and army officials will be posted into diplomatic posts.. All his cohorts and friends will earn PHDs from national universities as they like.. Judges and lawyers will take their table over up and down. Because, they will not be able to do legal reasoning… Their heads and brains will be bought and sold by Mahinda families.. yet, Sri Lanka will be turned in to little China.. More parts of Sri Lanka will be sold to China.. wait and see more of this. If you are happy for this vote for him.. otherwise, vote for someone else but not for Ranil..

    My dear friend Mangala,
“The next president of Sri Lanka will not be Gotabaya Rajapaksa or any Rajapaksa. The next president of this country will not be an alleged criminal who has the blood of countless journalists and innocents on their hands. Our next president will be a Sri Lankan citizen, born in Sri Lanka who never fled this country or swore allegiance to another land.”
I agree with on the above statements but,
“The next president of Sri Lanka will be the person democratically selected by the United National Party and its allies”, Hmmm….. I have my doubts & do not agree with you at all.

Very frightening future if the criminal mobs win the election. But as long as Slimy Ranil is there the outcome is equally bleak too. Ranil too must go as early as possible. I pray people of this country think carefully and intelligently instead on their stupid racial and bogus historical claims and vote for a very much lesser evil. As a nation we are in a big mess and hardly any decent person to become a president. Thanks to majority ignorance and stupidity they have got rid of all the sane people and now we have left behind with garbage and garbage surrounded by garbage collectors. It is tragic. What is the future for this pathetic country. Why Kuveni’s curse is still haunting us. Even if they don’t kill us and abduct us they are going to suck this country dry and make all beggars. We will be surrounded by third grade goons like Johnston, Weeramonkey and Gnanasara. Is SL coming to an end. I cry for you mother Lanka. But it is all your creation.

How can a man against whom there are many cases pending in courts regarding alleged murders, of opponents, journalists and members of ethnic minorities and even ordinary blokes such as Wasim Thajudeen get away and contest election for the highest office without knowing the verdicts. If he gets elected those cases can be withdrawn and he be allowed to restart the state machinery to take revenge on those investigated his alleged criminal activities.

    Dear Mangala,
it is not worth to spend time in responding to your words. We have brought the present government in to power not with many hopes but we sincerely believed that at least you will send those criminals to the prison. Thanks to your government now they are to rule the country again. you and your leaders will be cursed forever and ever for breaking the trust we placed on you. We won’t vote you again. Get lost!

If any one is responsible for what happened today,.it is Ranil and No one else
If he has let Lacile de Siva do his job, Rajspakse family would have been behind bars.
If transitional justice was allowed to take place with international assistance, they would have been tried for genocide and crime against humanity
Ranil thought he was smart to check Sirisena using Rajspakse family
They outsmarted him and.he is crying like a baby

“THE MUSLIM VOICE” is fully with Gotabaya Rajapaksa (THE PEOPLES CHOICE) in his political journey to be the next President of Sri Lanka. The Muslims have begun to act on their own politically and have started to support Gotabaya, Insha Allah. “THE MUSLIM VOICE” will do all it is possible within it’s ability to make Gotabaya’s victory a success.
The Muslim Youth and the young professionals of the community have begun to use “SOCIAL MEDIA” to challenge these scroundels. In the next elections, surely the Muslims are contemplating to vote the “Joint Opposition” to power. THEY WILL VOTE GOTABAYA RAJAPAKSA TO BECOME THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF SRI LANKA BECAUSE THEY CAN TRUST HIM TO SOLVE THE MUSLIM FACTOR ISSUES TOO, Insha Allah.

      Noor Nizam,

You are another run away from Angoda Hospital just like New King. Next time, when New King goes to Thailand, you too go and get treatment for your pissu.

Muslims did not support Old Royals in 2015, though all Muslim comedian writers and leaders with Old Royals. Unlike Tamils, who just did what Sampanthar asked them to do, Muslims did not vote for Old Royals, listening to the corrupted leadership. There is nowhere any indication that Muslims are going to do what you say. But it is true Muslims are disappointed with Yahapalanaya, who used Muslim extremists to bomb Tamil Churches.

White vans !!! just another fake slogan that is now expired. How come you never wrote any articles about the 60,000+ killed by RW and his gang back in the 80″s or when when the Central Bank was robbed in broad daylight ??

What is important is not who the president or who the Prime minister will be. All of those should be friendly to say yes to ACSA, SOFA-VFA, MCC Compact and to IMF and WB loans. All the Presidents and all the PMs say yes to IMF loans in installments. that comes with a package of other things. that is a long list of demands asking how to make Sri lanka grow. the ultimate result is Sri lanka is progressing as a Neo-liberal economy. IMF loans had worked for the Lending country and the multinationals or contractors who came with the loan. Sri lanka and the People are in bad shape. I think, Mangala is the best suited to be either the President or the PM. Because, during the last four years or so Mangala as the Foreign minister signing and promoting all those agreements then as the Finance minister sold high interests T bills when So many Developed countries are selling their money at negative interest rates. So, European Insurance firms and American financial firms are very happy with the Sri lankan way. In order to support that, American Credit Rating agencies too lowered the Sri lankan Credit rating, so those firms can ask higher interest rates. After Ranil, Penthouse RAVI and his BOnd Scam gang, Mangala is the best candidate.
How about since the day Maithripala declared that this would be the Election year, MANGALA is throwing MCC Grants money to Srilankans. aLL THE AMERICAN PROJECTS ARE IN FULL GEAR AND billions are thrown at people. As Sri lankan is multi everything country, it is christmus and Edul peethar are the most important. SRI LANKA IS NOT A BUDDHIST COUNTRY. but, Now UNP govt has so many Buddha Sasana minister. they everybody try to support buddhist temples.

This opportunists is piggy backing Sajith Premadasa to lift his flagging popularity.
Most self serving untrustworthy self seeking selfish and an arrogant individual who should be touched even with a barge pole.
Mangala Samararaweera is the most opportunistic and self serving politician who lives by deceit to further his his own ends. A party hopper & a traitor.
Here is a person who betrayed the country at Geneva UNHRC without any Cabinet or Paliamentary approval by co-sponsoring Resolution 30/1. How does one see such a betrayal?
All this was to further his own ends and dance with Powers, Biswals, Kerriyas, Malonowskis, Keshaps in New York.
If the Democrats continued, SL would have by now would have been torn to pieces.
Fortunately, the democrats were upstaged by the Republicans.
When the Republicans called the the UNHRC a cesspit & pulled out of it, the American poodle UK brought Resolution 40/1 & GOSL co-sponsored it once again..

A Terminator is better than a Weasle like YOU. We will tame the terminator.

    Mangala,
Where is the 18 Billion US$ you said they stole and promised to bring back to SL?

Talking about alleged criminals and murderers, You have been working with one the last 12+ years in Batalanda Ranil.

You committed treason by signing the one sided UN resolution against SL, a forst for any country.

You are a shameless man. Time for you to walk away.

Noor Nazim, man Muslims or Tamils from upcountry and north and east, also the Christians, in other words the minorities would never ever vote for Gota. These block votes are the deciding factor in any election. It’s owing to that MR lost last time. When the majority Sinhalese votes splits into two portions in any proportion which part gets the minorities votes, and they take it all. Man you should keep in mind that Tamil would never vote for them for obvious reason, and Muslims too not vote for Gota and his goons created BBS and all anti Muslim forces.

    • 1
      0

Erm, Sinhala buddhist block is mostly with SLPP, easily close to 70% after the bombings.

up country tamils will vote for SLPP like they did in the last local government election. Diganbaram failed to deliver, and Thondaman has capitalised. Please look at the feb 2018 election result, SLPP controls most of the up country LG councils.

A good portion of the Catholic vote, especially those in the middle to lower income brackets, who faced worst of the UNP economics as well as the sense of betrayal after the bombings will also vote SLPP.

TNA has lost a lot of its voters. If you look at election results from 2015 to 2018, they lost about 35% of their voter base. That’s a huge drop. I’m willing to bet these people are poor tamils who are sick of the elitism of Sumandirans politics which only center around the concept of the seperate state. They may want someone to address their more immediate and dire economic concerns. Once again there is scope here for GR, cause no one is really doubting his ability to deliver results in this department. so even there, he will get some votes.

I can’t say much about the Muslim population but i think they will vote the same way as 2015.

Also, the divisions in the UNP are going to hurt that campaign. if ranil wins, grassroots will be upset. If sajith wins he will face resistance from within the party elites and he will struggle to form the same minority alliance that ranil forms.

With all of that being said, Sinhala buddhist vote is 71% of the total vote. And Sinhala buddhist are mostly pissed and sick of the UNP. if SLPP gets close to 70% of this base, that alone is game over.

So Rohan, maybe you should rethink your silly little calculus.

Skill full lier and genocidal finesse at his job.

Mangala, Ranil, Chandrika, Milinda and all others have arrived at their first mile stone, which is saving the genocidal meniacs, although they themsleves are genocidal maniacs and the difference is they did not flaunt their genicidal fantasies.

After returning from UNHRC 2015, Managala himself said to Singala audience that what he had done a trick to complete the Eezhalam Tamil genocide in long term, without any fanfare and with the complicit of Hindia, UK, and the US. Magala did not use the exact or exterme genociadal words.

Now the final phase of the genocide, as planned, is being unleashed.

Any politician can be most unpopular during his second term as he/she has accumulated more wrongs after the second term than the first term. Even under such conditions, UNP could get only 42 seats. How UNP is going to win a Presidential election. Who will vote, the divided Sinahala buddhsit vote, Catholic vote, Divided tamil vote, Muslims vote or protestants.
I heard, Some UNP protestants are preparing to register their own party. that is where Eran Wickramarathne comes ? I heard, they have talked to Maithripala Sirisena.

    Mangala,
    *
Lanka doesn’t mind the Rajapaksa kingship…..FOREVER!
    *
What Lanka DOESN’T want is money of the hardworking masses placed on the Tamil Nadu caste-structured conglomerate, to be seen again only when our special thrice-blessed Lanka is part of Tamil Nadu.
    *
What Lanka WANTS is Socialist networking (of which you call theft when the Rajapaksa’s put the money on the alternate global network). Now that Trump is in power, that alternate socialist network is exactly what is needed to balance out the greater global monetary structure.
    *
What Lanka WANTS is our Buddhist United Sovereign Island under ONE Sovereign. That is the only way the Masses of the Sinhalese and Tamils can become fulfilled on the soil of their ancestors.
    *
Also what Lanka wants is tradition and culture away from neo-liberalism. I mean, we cannot be merged with the Greater Indian Conglomerate with LGBTQUIA rights in mind (nothing wrong with LGBTQUIA….but it becomes wrong when fulfillment is only found when that innate propagation-need means merging with other countries away from your own time-honored communities).
    *
And if a few journalists for the TN conglomerate that betray the happiness of the Masses disappear, then justice towards the Masses would have been served.

Gota tells something in front of the public but acts in opposite direction and we know that he is not paragon of virtue. We vividly remember how he acted with the power and licence given by his brother and when the power is directly under him, (if by any chance he wins) we just can’t imagine what would happen. However, what Ranil promises to the people of this country are outdated ‘ chantha gundus’ such as gyms, Tabs to tell a few. He looks funny in front of the people and he never learns. Let him decide at the earliest whether to stay in politics or not. If he doesn’t, UNP will definitely vanish into oblivion, as Gota is a different type of person.

State Secretary John Kerry and his assistant, Nisha Biswas many times pleaded Managala and Ranil to arrest and proceed the pending cases against Old Royals. America promised all necessary helps. But Ranil even went to Temple Tree House and gave assurances to Old Royals. Malaga cheated the whole world with his lies about land releases, OMP ….. and many other tricks. Mangala Personally responsible to have saved Old Royals’ $18B with his Foreign Exchange Fraud Amnesty Act (2017). That is the reason Rs standing at 180 for a dollar. Hands up those who are surprised by Mangy’s crocodile tears over journalists, minorities, etc just before elections.
    /
Mahinda has never been a dictator. Remember, Mahinda lost the third term of presidency AS THE SITTING PRESIDENT, normally, the sitting president never loses when contesting elections: Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Mubarak of Egypt, Ranil of UNP (he’s the leader of UNP for more than 25 year, all by manipulation), etc are dictators. Mahinda is the one who made IDs compulsory at polling stations. So no more vote rigging. Also, Mahinda left the office 2 years before his term ends. Now, Mangala, eat your own word.
    /
Yahapalana retards stupidity is the sole reason for Muslim terrorist attacks and more attacks have been predicted.
    /
Mahinda has done the right thing by revealing the presidential candidate early which is very democratic. Now Yahapalana retards must do the same with in next few days, not just before handing in the nomination.

So Rajapaksa was kicked out with only 400,000 votes.. How sad.

I am sure those 400.000 votes would have come from our Catholic brothers and Sisters in the Bible Belt.
Because a senior Priest in that region told me how bad Rajapaksas were just before the 2015 Election.

If that Priest and his Clan had better wisdom and didn’t buy the Bull Shit which Managala and Clan dished out in bucket loads . 300 Catholic devotees wouldn’t have died at the hands of Muslim Terrorists wearing Suicide Bombs . And many more hundreds wouldn’t have suffered those life threatening injuries.

That Priest who is a close friend will regret what he told me , when I go to see him next time.
Although I am not going to remind him about it.

I looked at the Stats , Catholic Sinhala Population is now 6% And 3/4 of which must have the Voting rights.
That is over 600,000 Votes for Nandasena just to protect themselves from Terrorist Attacks going forward..

Wonder whether Managala Samare will still mount the Stage to canvass for Keselwatta Kid ?.
That is if the Kid can rise up from that debilitating attack from the Colombo Elite Anglican and Vellala Faction which was delivered by Penthouse Resident Galleon Ravi as a preemptive strike on behalf of their leader Dr Ranil…..

Has Mangala Samare apologized to our Brother Cardinal His Highness Dr Malcom for allowing the Muslim Terrorists to kill 300 of his Catholic Parishioners and maim another 500 mainly from the Catholic Belt. while Mangala and his Colleagues in the UNP Cabinet used the” Intelligence” to stay home on Easter Sunday?..?..
