Unheard Sounds And Faint Memories Of ‘Bloody’ White Vans

By Vishwamithra

“All faults may be forgiven of him who has perfect candor” ~Walt Whitman

Gotabaya and Mahinda

In the questionable days of the Rajapaksa regime, the most dreadful sound, amongst many a sound of shooting in Rathupaswala, Katunayake and post-war Jaffna, was the one that you did not hear: a white van parked outside your home. How many men and women were forcibly shoved into the van and taken away and threatened, their bones smashed, and spirit drained, one may never know. Among those countless shrieks and screams and unbridled impunity to those who hurt innocent men and women who happened to hold a different view from that of those in power, their broken noses and shattered bones might yet be bleeding.

Those who wrote a different story, different from the garbage thrown out by the state-owned media and sycophants of the regime garbed in officials’ dress, had vanished. The heart-wrenching saga of a wife going from one government desk to another is still being written in many a newspaper page, yet she doesn’t seem to get any plausible answer. Prageeth Eknaligoda was no ordinary journalist who happened to write the Rajapaksa-fed flattering stories about the glories of the First Family’s far-fetched and exaggerated triumphs. Eknaligoda’s disappearance has been in the realm of news stories that would haunt the reader’s curiosity for many an year. Those government politicians at the time either maintained a muted demeanor or those in the then Opposition tried hard to bring forth this unbelievable tragedy to the attention of a placid public, invariably and tragically fell short. Prageeth Ekneligoda was supposed to have written some investigative piece which was allegedly devastating to the collective personality of the First Family. It is more akin to a mad dictator’s reaction to an unfavorable account of a nasty act committed by the Family.

Prageeth Ekneligoda’s disappearance cannot be rotting away in an empty, socio-political quarry forever. Evan in the unlikely event of a Rajapaksa comeback into governance-territory, the body of Prageeth, still breathing or not, has to be produced (habeas corpus) to reach a finality. Otherwise the rule of law is absent; investigative arms of the basic governing body of any society cannot just be cut off in order to conceal the evil deeds of a democratically elected Mafia bosses. The ‘fixers’ of a greedy and power-hungry members of a ‘Family’ need to be exposed but how can that elementary distinction of the rule of law be made to exercise its basic function if the present-day rulers turn their eyes and ears the other way? One can still remember how the infamous Alfred de Zoysa of the Kalattewa fame was convicted of murder when the bodies of those who were murdered were missing. Neither State-sponsored terrorism nor an impotent non-response of the State is any answer to legitimate grievances of a wailing public.

But the irony of the situation is even more heartbreaking. A government that was ushered in on a podium of eradication of corruption, nepotism and impunity from the rule of law, seems to be even more entrenched in its own mass of lethargy, indecision and saliva for money. While a sad cloud of the Prageeth Ekneligoda saga is still hovering over a docile and ineffective government, those who are accused of executing this dreadful deed on a freelancing journalist and his family are still free. And the answers don’t seem to be forthcoming. That is not a complementary commentary on a Yahapalanaya government. The net-effect of such placidity and indifference to the real world is the likelihood of the return of the villain- the Rajapaksas.

On top of the Prageeth Eknaligoda case, the incident of the daytime murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge, Editor of the Sunday Leader, the premier newspaper that went after the corrupt practices of the Rajapaksas, too weighs heavily on the those who are charged with the investigation and pursuit to an end of its legal process. Two and half years is long enough time for the investigations to produce a result, one way or the other. The snail’s pace at which the judicial processes are meandering gives room for suspicion and distrust in the totality of the process. Is someone deliberately instructing the investigators to go slow or not to proceed along the lines which are getting too close for comfort for some close members of the former First Family? The inquisitive public is getting weary of this disgustingly sluggish and tortuous snaking.

Lasantha Wickrematunge had friends in high places. The then circle of diplomats and foreign envoys, especially those representing neo-liberal Western and North Western Europe, exhibited and adopted a curious, keen and encouraging stance and embraced Lasantha’s fearless attitude towards going after the corrupt and degenerate. In the eyes of the public, reading or otherwise, there was only one party that had the motive to silence Lasantha Wickrematunge. That was the regime of the Rajapaksas. Into whose closets Lasantha looked and what degradation or decomposition their contents were in, we are not able to see. Lasantha Wickrematunge’s murder is a gruesome reminder of what political power, gone to the fringe, could do not only to a worthy man, it is even more of a reminder of that power that could be mustered to thwart the freedom of expression of a people, a fundamental right of human society.

Along with a the disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda and the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge came the Rathupaswala and Katunayake murders of innocent civilians who chose to exercise their fundamental right, protesting against the government policies. The murder of a Tamil journalist attached to the ‘Udayan’ newspaper has been swept under the carpet. All these are among a crowded field of journalists such as Upali Tennakoon, Keith Noyahr, and Poddala Jayantha against whom violation of human rights had been committed.

But what stands out like a brutal reminder of ignobility of a ‘Power Family’ is the mysterious killing of Thajudeen on unbelievably personal grounds. The evidence has emerged connecting very high-up personalities at the time to this murder and the public is still awaiting finality, not to mention  the Prison Riots that claimed more than twenty five lives of inmates.

These are all crimes, plain and simple. Killing is a crime. It is the principal and most horrendous crime one can commit. If the criminals are not found and convicted and punished, the rule of law, upon which every civilized societal structure is founded, collapses. Either anarchy spreads or authoritarianism of a ‘Family Junta’ would begin its heinous grip on a docile and totally breakable society. The battle for such a choice between two revolting options has been fought by the Joint Opposition (JO). Theirs is ostensibly for a faster-developing and a more orderly society. Faster-developing yes, but more orderly is loaded with frightening potential for the control of our basic rights; for control of minds and of every aspect of our lives. That is certainly not an enchanting prospect.

Every member of the Joint Opposition and every financier of that movement, if left to his or her own devices and demeanor, would be a dangerous parasite in our midst. Bringing back a democratically defeated political force that is controlled at the center by corrupt and evil predators of one single family is no option for the civil sustenance of our society.

But what is even more disheartening and depressing is what lies at the end these arguments and debate. A government that is purported to be founded on Yahapalanaya is sadly lacking in focus and seems unaccustomed to the vagaries of political storms. Yet overcoming a potentially damaging no-confidence motion, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe is basking in a false sense of relief. If he fails to pursue the wrong-doers of the last regime and bring them before the rule of law and justice, if he once again fails in that crucial task, then he might as well say good bye to power, come next elections. If, on the other hand, he does succeed in bringing the Rajapaksas before the rule of law and secures unforgiving sentences that go with it, Ranil Wickremasinghe might have a fighting chance, that again if he manages to contain a squabbling Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and a league of Muslim parties.

The choice before Ranil Wickremesinghe is, to use a worn-out cliché, as clear as crystal. However, it could be extremely unpleasant, not to others but to himself. If he intends to remain as leader of the United National Party and also is infatuated with idea of contesting the forthcoming Presidential Elections in 2020 as its candidate, he has only one single choice: vigorously go after the Rajapaksas and their henchmen and pursue that judicial process to a successful conclusion. If, on the other hand, Ranil Wickremasinghe opts to stay out of the said Presidential Elections and yet continue as the UNP leader, then that might offer a more pliable leverage to would-be contestants such as Sajith Premadasa and Navin Dissanayake.

These barbaric Rajafucksas will be back in power unless legally eradicated soon. If they ever come back to power (god forbid) they will go killing all those who investigated them and contested against them.

More than 32 journalists were killed during their horror regime. Over 5 Tamil MPs were killed.

These Rajafucksas are an eye sore.

We want the Rajapaksas Criminal Network to be sent to the Hage for trial for their crimes against humanity…

How about reopening the 1989 Bheeshanaya file? Will go by the chronological order. You may come and go, but Ranil has a life after 2025 – at least like all moartals he believes so (and we hope so).

          Please stop this nonsense.
You have been portraying yourself as a clever dick than a man who is concerned about human rights violations, war crimes and whole sale looting.

Ask yourself a simple question why has Sri Lanka very often needed human sacrifice since its independence when the powers were vested in a tiny minority of the people (Sinhala/Buddhist and it seems the fascists are desperately trying to wrest it from the racists and crooks)?

It appears you have become one of the leading apologist who justifies human sacrifies by commission and omission.

When white van strikes you or your grand children there would be no one left to question it except those of us who value life than loyalty to crooks, murderers, looters, racists, fascists,…………………rapists.

We know by raising other human rights violations ( Sri Lanka 1987 – 91, UK, USA, in their entire history, Hitler, Musolini, …. Roman, Persian, Muhal, ……Genghis Khan.. ) you think you can absolve the crimes committed by Dr Gota & Dr Mahinda. You have failed in your attempts and you will fail in your every future attempts.

In case if you have forgotten I am the only one genuinely setting the timeline for investigation into all war crimes committed by all parties from 5th April 1971 to date.

Not just the perpetrators but the war crime deniers such eminent people like yourself, Dayan, ……………………………….. should be prosecuted and made to account for your crimes.

Chill mate Native you going to stroke out one of these days. Me on the other hand support anyone who is for saving the sovereignty and integrity of this island, dignity of its people (Sinhalese included) , and the lack of stupidity of its politicians and so far mate only Rajapakshas fit that profile even remotely.

“Me on the other hand support anyone who is for saving the sovereignty and integrity of this island,”

What exactly is the sovereignty that you think whomsoever is going to save. What is the integrity when none of you know about it.
            .
Integrity – The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles or the state of being whole and undivided.

Tell us how these definitions relate to you, your leaders, your Mahasangha, your state institutions, bureaucracy, judiciary, armed forces, media, historians, businessmen, teachers, political parties ……………………………….. police, ……………. the parliament, the presidency, local governments, ……………………..?

Don’t forget it was India’s independence that made Sri Lankan freedom possible.
It was Hindia which as promised prevented the division of this island.
Rather than wagging your tail tuck it between your legs and pray to your mother Hindia to be the guardian angel forever.

Remind yourself the creation of Bangladesh. Hindia against of all odds created a new country. You should advise your little islander mates to often remember 26 March 1971. Make sure you don’t annoy Hindians to the extent forcing them to reconsider your sham sovereignty and integrity.

People have voluntarily forfeited their dignity because they keep voting for the crooks, war criminals, murderers, thieves, their descendants, racists, bigots, thugs, wife barterers, rapists ……………………….. May be Dr Mahinda fits all these categories.

You will do well to remember it was your brethren VP the psychopath who fought the last war to reclaim your imagined sovereignty (another well worn out myth of the Sinhala/Buddhists) of the island while the cowards full time members of the armed forces were hiding behind their women’s/VP’s back.

Watch the coward on this clip who was the conduit who arranged the interview with then 1988 JVP terrorists whom you regard as the person who protected Sri Lanka’s imagined sovereignty (another well worn out myth of the Sinhala/Buddhists).
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs8KHEpTuR8

Look at the coward who was shaking and shivering at just the thought of Hindian IPKF marching towards south. While he was fighting to save the imagined sovereignty of the island at the home front along with JVP terrorists he also went all the way to Geneva to sell it to the west at UNHRC.

What a hypocrites you and your leader Dr Rajapaksass are.
If anything the enemy is within, you, the clan, their b***s carriers, crooks political or otherwise, ………… Sinhala/Buddhist noisy minority (now evolving into fascists) ……… the so called smart ass patriots, Ranavirus, ………….

Treat your own people well otherwise strangers and neighbours will use the opportunity to grope your wife, daughters, granddaughters, mother, mothers in law, sisters, grandmas, aunts, daughter in laws, great grandmas, daughters in law, …………. over a period of time they will start enjoying the company of them.

“those deliberate killings of innocent people and wiping out of all Tamil representatives an intelegentia”

The only difference is VP did it in much larger scale than the JVP or the state.
As I often say, two stupid people were competing each other to hit the bottom. Indeed both did hit the bottom many many moons ago. Brigadier Priyankara was still celebrating his victory in London as if he was the one to hit the bottom first.

If it is Ranil conduct a massive propaganda campaign on Batalanda toture murders, if it is Navin remind the Tamils of the Jaffna library and his father , if it is Sajith, it is Bheeshanaya again and his father. Navin and Sajith will also have to explain their present wealth. Mr Vishvamitra has given the lead for his side.

I’m horrified to read your comment. Sorry to say this but if you are a Buddhist I’m not surprised.

The solution to 60,000 deaths is not killing 32 more people. If a previous UNP regime did those crimes, why weren’t they punished by 17 years of SLFP rule after that?

If these barbarians come back to power they will kill hundreds of thousands. Their thirst for blood knows no limit.

The reason for Ranil evading the prison sentence was that Chandrika is his best friend. Furthermore, I never said that the solution for killing 60,000 is 32 more kills. No matter white vans or anything would have been excercised, but media men in SL stay calm and quiet not revealing the brutal past of the Rajapakshes not giving a credit to current govt.
Today each and every high man is being criticised, but the days of Rajathuma if anyone criticised the rascal made royal family was subjected to White vanning.
Or missing, even that mad dog of the outfit Mervin silva was in the view that it had been like that, even if his voice has been changed favouring Rajapakshes today.
People protest against not seeing Rajaakshes are caught by the law – is what people cant digest today.
That is seen as spineless govt which is in power.
Had they given the orders to get them – things would have been much nicer for the current govt.
Now the way it moves forward, not easy to achieve anyhting as I see it, it is just killing time only.
Rajapakshes should be taken by law should be the top of Agenda to relieve this nation.
      If anyone commited high crimes,
there should be no barrier in the law and order when taking them.
Journos make it not easy to the current men, not spreading the views right.
Lately I heard Neth fm I thought would be a good Radio sender stood against Sarath fonseka …

Many of the commentators highlighted the importance of taking a proper legal action for the crimes committed against humanity by the previous regime and so far the President or Prime Minister did not bother to even to utter a word about those crimes during the past 3 years. The life of 6.2 million voters who braved to get rid of those criminals is now at risk of their lives. A large number of Tamil political activists were arrested and kept in the jail without any charges with false accusations. But the true terrorists who terrorized the people and the whole nation for the period of 10 years purely for the interest of their family benefits are still have the backing of the 45% voters not because of their love on them but because of the failure of the current government’s to take action against those criminals.

All what 6.2 millon voter eligible wanted was to stand against high corruption and abuses and higher crimes that commited by Rajapakshe men.

If the current DUO cant find a way to go for it, they should either leave office or let any new leaders to come up and lead this nation.

We need someone who would not be biased to party politics but to the country and nation.

Welcome. Good 30,000 cases had already been identified and the reports and evidences are gathering dust at the National Archive. Make sure the serving and retired members of armed forces do not obstruct your pursuit of justice. By the way there are elected MPs on both sides of the parliament who may not like serving justice to the ordinary people.

Tamil tigers of LTTE and other ruthless Tamil chauvinist of outfits has uprooted all values and norms of Sri Lankan that Democracy societies by the blessing of TNA. Its save for that anti-establishment political road Maps of TNA.
The LTTE was key player of responsibility and accountability of assassinations of Sajith’s father of R.Premapala and Navin’s father of Gamanie Dissnayake by wish of TNA grand political agenda?

Surely Saman, are you suggesting that what the goons did in the various pogrom before LTTE are ‘values and norms’ of Lankans? Do the white-vans?
      Saman says ~ “………..TNA saved 10Febuary 2018 Ranil W… “.

vishvamithra is advising how to promote Ranil’s chances to beocme the president. On the other hand, voters are sayng something different. I heard sri lankan fishermen are complaining that if they can migrate overseas where there is particular employment. they expected higher prices for their fish. Yet the Ultra Liberal, right wing PM has promoted businessmen and brokers over the others, that fishermen are getting very low prices that they say they can not live with. So, expect the win with a higher voter margin.

Mr Vishvamitra, like many other contributors and commentators here seem to be in possession of very valuable information in regard to some high profile murders and abductions. Strangely none of them are prepared to assist investigation authorities by revealing their sources. They fear the almost certain return of Rajapaksas.

He’s just a waste…good for nothing pathetic guy. Wait and see, he will not do anything for sure, to take any action against these killers and parasites.
So, there won’t be anything to prevent those rascals coming back to power and go with the killing and revenge taking spree ! Sri Lanlka is a shit hole for some time now and people are paying very dearly for all their stupidity of electing these thugs to lead the country. What a moronic people are we ?
The unbelievable thing is that many idiots still wants those rascals to get back the ruling power, for whatever the reasons are ! Even god cannot save us all..
Just wondering whether lord Buddha cursed this land or blessed it thrice !(Thrice blessed or cursed ?)
Is Sinhala Buddhism the cause for all these evil things happening ?
Can any one tell us all about any good thing happened after Ceylon became Sri Lanka ?
Can any one show us a Buddhist attained Nirvana/Nibbana in this sacred country ?
Is there any real religious prelate in this country ?
It’s all bogus show business, selfish politics, using show Sinhala Buddhism…cheating all …
We are all stupid people …and so we reap the benefits of some crazy people…
Abolish English altogether, and all other languages from Lanka

“The net-effect of such placidity and indifference to the real world is the likelihood of the return of the villain- the Rajapaksas.”
For you, Tamil Diaspora, LTTE cadres, TNA, Rajapakses could be villains but for the people (including 300,000 Demala civilians kept as a human shield) who suffered under Tamil terrorists they are not villains. Sirisena is a traitor who brought ‘Batalanda Wadakaya’, guy who gave one third of the country on a platter to Pol Pot in Sri Lanka Prabhakaran, guy who is working like a poodle of western countries and Hindia.

One and only option available to prime Minister is to use his legitimate powers to bring justice to the victims of these heinous crimes which are crying to heaven for vengeance. These are test cases of crimes against humanity. One cannot imagine how the President and the Prime Minister could remain subversive to these gaping murders. Your silence is loud enough and it’s echo is in the air calling relentlessly for natural justice. You don’t deserve to hold your present positions and your political deals will not make you safe either. If you cannot do justice to the vast majority of people who put you in power, for heaven’s sake hand over your position to a person of courage and honesty.

A well written piece. Tells us everything that is wrong with our politicians. Those who think it is democracy that would pull us through and ones who think otherwise.
The Rajapakse family had their time at the helm and what an Ars…le job they did of ruling our country. The horrendous murder of Lasantha, Thajudeen, Eknalogoda (his body is still to be found), the 27 inmates at Welikada are MURDERS committed with utter impunity.
One may ask whether the Rajapakses thought that they would not be asked to answer for all these crimes probably it was their upbringing.
We see the same with the offspring of this family, so there is nothing but murderous intent in them.
The Sirisena / Ranil government has got about another 18 months to get their act together. They could start with the Welikada massacre, then onto the abduction of Keith Noyahr, and the Thajudeen murder as there is ample evidnce stacked against the former first family and its sibling and offspring.
Now is the right time to bring them to task and thwart them from ever gaining power again.
If complacency prevails they would be back, because Sri Lankans are gullible like most humans anywhere, if not why would we still still follow religions that were professed, 2500, 2000 and 1400 years ago.
We humans don’t have the capacity to reason, and that is why we still follow religions when we could just FOLLOW THE LAW OF THE LAND WE LIVE.
We don’t do that but worship idols with flowers, and stoop down five times daily when our hearts and minds are as dirty as the sewer taking our Sh..t down to the pit.

The basic rule MR did not learn was that when laws fail, the natural laws will take over. GR and others are as good as rubbish. If the system worked correctly, the professionals would have done very very much better to propel the country to highly competitive levels. Instead these rascals of politicians caused losses after losses, chased peace loving citizens to foreign climes and built an idiots hub. Hope sense will prevail at least from now on for people to recover from the economic stress that has been caused by these swindlers.

One should understand that whoever killed Ekneligoda and Lasantha is living among us and will go to the cemetery in a white or a black van when they die..When my grandfather died 70 years back we took him to the cemetery and left him there and came back home. Did not keep his body at home. Similarly during the past 70 years we took our grand mother father mother and a sister to the cemetery and left them there. White van killings were made to attain personal gains of the perpetrators and they know that one day they will die and when they die we will not keep them at home but take them to the cemetery possibly in a white van. Its better for the perpetrators to come forward and meet the due punishment than dyeing daily.

White Van, whoever does it is very, very bad. One can even be executed after due process of the law and fair trial. But this is kidnapping, extortion, murder, everything in one go. Even in 1988, this white van was in operation. The Batalanda report is in the public domain and anyone who reads that has to come to an understanding that all this extra-judicial activities in the guise of quelling lawlessness is indeed a farce. It does not in any way foster the public interest but the private interest. How many were killed for nothing? The only offence was that there was an enmity with a chap who could lift you. The report identifies the politician responsible for setting up the notorious outfit. It is ironical that his government, to day, caused the enactment of the Office of the Missing Persons Act. I too, then as a public servant who did not yield into corrupt motives in awarding tenders at that time nearly missed death because a white van came to my house at that time in search of me while I was out of the country. White van has a long history. In my view, the previous regime merely copied the mechanism of its predecessors. In contrast, during the 1915 riots, many were executed before the end of the day but after a summary trial and there is a record. I believe that the current Philippine Government is practicing this kind of thing in the name of controlling lawlessness. Perhaps they may have copied the technique from Sri Lanka.

Dear Vishwa I had asked this question before to all CT readers which I am posting again. Can any one please name one politician who was found guilty and had served time. Not the BS of having commission,Taking away civic rights so that person can be re elected again as a leader, going to hospital instead of prison, getting anticipatory bail …etc….etc.At least there is enough to quote starting from Asia( enough and above in the west). Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal,S.Korea,India and Malaysia. Also in Brazil,Argentina,UK,US. As long I remember never in Lankawe. That goes to explain how stupid our people are who are fully drunk on communalism/racism. It not the politicians alone who has public?? immunity. When the law and order situation is such what o people hope for??. All you see is when an article appears viewers coming out in groups to argue Who/When/Where/Which party blah…blah…blah. Do not blame the politicians for the apathetic, self centered, racial minded public who consciously prefer to keep the eye closed and accept these as norm.

The proof of the pudding was the 2015 election results. Wannihamy & co lost.
The ineffective Justice System and the Ineffectiveness of the President and the Primeminister is the cause of not able to punish the culprits.

That’s the reason these 2 leaders should leave after the next election.

You are being nasty to our truth seeking commentators.
Why do you think those who question Dr Rajapaksa’s (LLD + 3 PhD) integrity automatically fall into the category of clan haters?

      Fear mongers:-
The Public Racist Dayan Jayatilleka, Mahasangha, saffron clad thug Gnanasara, Wimal Sangili Karuppan, ……………………… Taraki, you, Johnny Baby, ………………. Nalin De Silva, …………….

The agencies that is suppose to deal with law and order, justice, fraud, war crimes, ….. are scared of the Sinhala/Buddhist president Sirisena who on many occasions pissed off with the officials who pursued with investigation, filing cases against the crooks and war criminals, .. As a Sinhala/Buddhist patriot Sirisena would not allow officials to take the glorified “war heroes” to courts and charge them even if they raped his wife, daughter and son or looted the treasury.

The humble “functionaries” are also scared of their future in case if Dr Gota (DSc) is back on the driving seat of white vans.

I also mentioned a few days after the election of 8 Jan 2015 that Ranil would never charge the clan and cronies as they had a deal with him.

Vishwamithra says ~ “………Ranil Wickremasinghe might have a fighting chance, that again if he manages to contain a squabbling Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and a league of Muslim parties”.
How short can memory get to? The language/religion-divide was used by SWRD B to get to be PM. ITAK highlighted the injustice here and TNA is continuing this seventy years later. It is clear that the power grab is mainly to increase personal wealth and two teams have emerged. One team through SLPP used the divide card in the recent LG election.
Vishwamithra: Do you think TNA must keep quiet till the “Gun fight at OK coral” is over?
    .
We have been reduced to choose between two very bad teams. The reason is not addressing the grievances of minorities)
Vishwamithra: Are you seriously suggesting ~ “………..then that might offer a more pliable leverage to would-be contestants such as Sajith Premadasa and Navin Dissanayake”.
From frying pan into the mouth of a demon?

I suppose govt. sponsored hit squads originated to combat JVP terror in the past. Thereafter, it’s known that Premadasa had his own goon squad roaming in green Pajeros with no number plates, as well as CBK, who had her own private ‘body guards’ to do her bidding but it was the Rajapakse regime, drunk with power after a grateful nation elevated him to demi god status, that, he & his family, as well as, his cronies, blatantly used mercenaries to permanently silence any one who opposed them or incurred their displeasure. Yet, the average bloke on the street turned a blind eye, possibly brainwashed into thinking the Rajapakses as the saviors of the Sinhala nation & Buddhism, therefore, should be excused for apparent vigilantist ‘justice’ for ‘traitors’. The apparent Rajapakse’s tough talk to the UN & the western world about not letting the perpetrators of war crimes in the guise of ‘ranawiru’ soldiers to be hung out dry while he is prepared to go to the (non existent) electric chair in their place, took him to new heights in popularity. Despite the efforts of Mangala Samareweera as the Foreign Minister, trying to reconcile the issue, Sirisena too, sought to gain cheap popularity by emulating the Rajapakse rhetoric. So it is obvious that those in high places are not keen to enforce law & order to ensure justice is done when the out come would be opening a can of worms, therefore, not in their best interest.

The extension of war crimes to human rights violations on civil society is just another short step. Threats & intimidation, whether at personal level or against minorities, is the result of ignoring the fundamental rights of citizens to protection by the state in the form of law & order, as well as, access to justice.
