What Is To Be Done? Where To Begin?

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath De Alwis

The only way of catching a train I have ever discovered is to miss the train before.” ― G.K. Chesterton

When Lenin wrote his celebrated pamphlet ‘What is to be done?’ it was a reiteration and an amplification of an earlier tract titled ‘Where to Begin?’

Minister Rajitha Senaratne Dentist and Bullshit artist exceptional and preeminent has described it as a defeat for Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Minster Mangla Samaraweera the only present time minister anchored to the present has described the LG polls setback as a timely wake up call.

Wake up call, it certainly is. Its timeliness will be determined by unfolding events. Where to begin the remedial process after the wakeup call?

First things first

First things first. Mangala Samaraweera finds himself in the UNP not because he is a neoliberal in disguise. He is in the UNP because he was sacked from the SLFP after Mahinda and brother Basil hijacked it and made the party of the common man and the turf of the Bandaranaike clan in to the fiefdom of the Rajapaksa clan. It is our misfortune that the war ended while the Rajapaksa clan was in control and now the title to the liberated land is theirs.

There is no SLFP. Our elected President has been pissing against the wind and wetting himself mercilessly in a vain bid to rescue a party maimed beyond recognition.

The two brothers have interpreted the LG polls results with rare innocence. Gotabaya on arrival said that the people have realized that they were duped in 2015. The people want Mahinda Rajapaksa at the helm of the realm.

Participating in a lengthy political discussion on Hiru TV owned by the family of Duminda Silva now incarcerated on a murder conviction, Basil said that the people have roundly condemned legal witch hunts of political opponents. The obliging TV anchors did not probe the subject of free and fair franchise expressed by the people of Biyagama bestowing title to the Malwana mansion on him.

Where to begin?

Where to begin? We begin by requesting Ranil to stepdown. If he does not stepdown, dump him. This writer has said this before. Once Ranil held tremendous promise. He lost the presidency by a whisker in 2005. Since then, he has lost his marbles. He has convinced, himself that he is an expert economist and the Lankan version of a hybrid of Lee Kwan Yew and Mahathir Mohamed. He remains in politics to redeem himself and not to redeem us.

He is in a cloud cuckoo land of his own. He has little patience for elected members with proven track records. The unelected Malik Samarawickrama and Tilak Marapana are his main crutches. Paskeralingam and Charitha Ratwatte push his wheel chair behind the curtain.

This writer was horrified when a managing director of a quoted public company and one of our top blue-chip conglomerates said ‘I don’t mind announcing that I voted for the ‘Pohottuwa. He/she explained Mahinda allowed us to do our business. He left us alone.  Now under the guise of one window clearance we are told what to do, when to do and how to do business by busybodies and mentioned ‘you know who.’

No Sobhitha thero, No President Sirisena

The Supreme Court has advised the president the precise span of his presidency. The time past is more than the time that is left. He must complete what is half done and attend to what that needs to be done and completed.

Without Sobitha Thero there would have been no common candidate and there would be no President Sirisena. Had Ranil Wickremesinghe contested, Mahinda Rajapaksa would be in the fourth year of his third presidential term. The Chinese would have written off our loans to offset the impact of western sanctions. Mohan Pieris would be administering justice. Cabraal and Jayasundera would be dueling to decide the growth rate, GDP and Per Capita Income. The maker of Urban Marvels would have introduced a Mass Rapid Transit system linking Basil’s Malwana with Lanza’s Negombo. We would be relishing Malwana Rambutan laced with Ecstasy from the Lagoon in Negombo.

This writer voted for this President on 8th January 2015 and has no regrets for doing so.

This writer is no supporter of Mahinda Rajapaksa. This writer does not wish to see Mahinda Rajapaksa anywhere near state power.

Mahinda Rajapakse is a Believable Leader

That said, this writer is not hesitant to concede that he is a believable leader to a near half of the voting population. In believability he is miles ahead of any of his political opponents. Prevention of his return to power is a far too serious matter that should not be left to the advisers who inhabit the crevices in the corridors of presidential power. Half-witted Lawyers and fake Rupert Murdochs   with personal grudges against Ranil Wickremesinghe and Ghost Writers pretending to be Eco Geeks are the humbugs responsible for the current political cul-de-sac that has made the would-be reformer in to a lame duck.

Egg on the face

Thanks to Sobitha thero, Maithtripala Sirisena was  a believable leader in 2015. Today he is not. Since his election, he has slipped rapidly downwards. He has overstepped his mandate. His task was to facilitate reform of the political process. Instead he opted to manipulate the process. Now, he has ended with egg on his ‘vandaneeya poojaniya’ mug.

So, he should spare us the sermons and undertake to do what he promised to Venerable Sobitha thero. Dante Gabrielle Rosetti was an English poet. This rare pearl of wisdom is attributed to him. Look in my face; my name is Might-have-been; I am also call’d No-more, Too-late, Farewell”

I used to read this guy’s stuff… but he’s since become very predictable, like many of the others of his ilk.

Mahinda Rajapakshe is a very good actor/humbug. Even though he is genuinely not patriotic/nationalist (we have seen how he, his close relatives and his cohorts abused the country’s wealth), he knows very well how to act like one (very crooked). He is also known as the people’s president/leader because he knows the art of fooling the masses (carrying the children, extending both hands to appease the old people, etc.), he is extremely good at acting like a real father of the nation and an expert in hoodwinking not only the masses but to all those whom he gives promises (false promises). He is a double tonged leader who can never be trusted.

On the other hand, Ranil Wickramasinghe is straight forward (not an actor) and does not know anything about public relations or rather, he does not know how to fool the masses. Even on a stage, he will wear his western attire and sit with the legs crossed (don’t care type) showing disrespect to the public (not intentionally). He may be cunning at politics but he does not know how to appease/attract the people. Even after losing around 30 odd times, Ranil has never learned how to hoodwink the masses. UNP desperately needs not only cunning but also a crooked leader who knows how to be a good actor in front of the masses (an expert in fooling the masses), an expert in playing to the gallery. Either Ranil should learn these crooked tricks from Mahinda and apply it in full scale or quit giving the UNP leadership to a genuinely patriotic/nationalist looking actor/crook.

The greatest service Sirisena can do to the country is,
Make our courts and police really independent,
Let people elect the top judges and top police officers!
Remove political interference from courts and police!
Make governance more trans parent, Audit bill!
So it will be not possible to play havoc even if he wins future election!

President Sirisena, If you can make this possible, Nation will forgive you! and will remember you, this is why you came to power, this is your legacy, Give the SLFP back to Mahinda.

Best solution for this crisis is Ranil should resign for many reasons ..
People do not have confidence on him at all….
Now M&s has to ask to UNP to elect a good PM from.it ..
So that this government could for another 2years .
karu or Sajith are two best options UNP has got …
As long as Ranil is PM it is not good for the country ..
A man who failed 25 times still does not have self respect to go with dignity..
May he has learned this from MR ..
MR should have gone with respect long time ago ..
He wants to.establish family rules in Sri Lanka ..
That is why he keeps hanging around .
GOATS AND MR dispute is bigger that what we see.
So; for sake of Sri Lanka we need a good political leader not these PEOPLE..
Ranil never produce or guide young leaders to grow ..

      Question is who in UNP!
Karu: lost his credibility as the speaker
      Sajith Premadasa is another moron!
      Harsha : Moron, Folkeswagen
Eran: Cheap not trustworthy, justified the car permit sales.
      Ravi: no comments
      Malik: no comments
      Any suggestions?

Any country must be governed by wise men as Plato pointed out. Modern democracy takes another point of view – that the patient knows where it pains and so is a better judge of a cure and governing involves pain. We need a compromise. While the people must have the last say and be able to throw out its rulers yet the rulers must be chosen from among the wise.and those eligible to be leaders must have some qualifications to show they are wise and honest.
Let us work out a compromise by specifying qualifications for leaders.

I cannot understand why so many coolies asking Ranil to resign.. As mangala once rightly said they write for money and wine.
They could turn side immediately. No shame . no integrity This is the same way JO and Sira asked Dilrukshi to resign.
Dear P M. put your foot down and tell these humbugs to go to hell . You have two more years. to Run a UNP Government. Honour Rev Sobitha and Asked President to be a neutral politician. If you ask a vote from your party members they will still prefer you to any other in the UNP except vultures in your party. If you really analyse the election results you have not lost. You have more local councils under you than before.Country needs you. leave aside the opinion of people write for money

    Dear Sarath,

All of these new activists coming to the foray after three years of virtual non-existence in hiding, makes me to awaken myself, and also triggers me to send some awakening signals to some of the sleeping members of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) , of which only Sarath W has become the front line at present.

In fact, I am at times baffled by what Sarath W speaks of when some facts are totally skewing the the image of the NMSJ of what it is today in-front of the media.

When the NMSJ was formed initially, with Dr. Cabral, and Mr. Sisira Jayakody leading the way, REv Sobitha Thero was not quite confident in the way that things were leading up to. The Rev Thero then send Dr. Cabral to the US and Europe on a mission to collect funds to strengthen the organization.
The “white vans” were a definite deterrent at that time, but we batted on regardless.

Thus we created a payment gateway for Dr. Cabral to send in donations from various donors living outside of Sri Lanka and thus strengthening the effort of the NMSJ.
Sarath W is totally unaware of all these activities, that triggered the NMSJ, since he became an activist later.

This is just to make everybody aware of the background of the NMSJ which is the root and the main catalyst of the civil society movement that ultimately enabled the electoral result on the 9th of January-2015. (9th-since it was the day that the results were annoounced)

As Vasu has stated, appoint a caretaker government.
I say dissolve parliament and appoint a cross section of person and forma coalition to overlook the day to day work of the government until elections.
No government must formed by the loosers.

All big wigs in the government has lost their electorate including that Hamu from Attanagalla.

I do not believe in this writers stand, that Ranil should step down. Ranil is needed at the moment to keep the UNP together if not, the UNP will break into pieces. He has sacrificed his time and energy to prevent this country becoming a vasal society under the Rajapaksa rule. It is unkind of all to believe that the UNP can do without Ranil for having fought tooth and nail to usher the Democracy we enjoy today, unlike under MR where this writer could not even have written such an article and more so for the shackles made to bear on the free media by banning this web-site.

One need not be a rocket scientist to understand the dilemma MR have to face in selecting his representatives for the LG bodies from the lot, like the wadai seller CM of Uva with Grade 3 qualifications to run these Councils, not displeasing half the number in the fray. Thereafter the ones who will be selected will start from day one, what the Guru had resorted to, i.e. to rob left right and centre. After a year in office with bickering within the camp, the LG bodies will be in shambles for the Public to see just before the 2020 Elections. In the mean time speedy trials should be executed regards all, barring MR before the Elections in 2020 to uphold Justice, what the right minded yearn for . Then let us see who will contend with RW then, to mislead the country?

Are we expecting too much of our leaders? All human beings are fallible and there is no one good as pointed out in the bible. But we need to build in checks and balances and hold our leaders accountable.I believe we are doing a satisfactory job though there room for much improvement.

Mahinda Rajapakse is not a threat as long as the unitary government is honest in their original goal. Mahinda Rajapakse is still a threat to the unity of this island, democracy, rule of law and justice. He will take revenge against all those who joined to defeat him in 2015. Blood will run on this land and people will loose their freedom of speech, freedom to right, freedom of movement. It is a betrayal of people if both Ranil & Sirisena give up their promises. People who defeated Mahinda are still with you. Trust the people and honest to the people.

Aiyo Sarath, first Aiyo Sirisena and now where is Aiyo Shaymon Maama with his Melbournish comments?

so here is a comment from a friend in Kalutara District. Hope Ravi and RW acolytes read this column. ARROGANCE is something seen in RW’s inner circles a lot.

I was talking to a mason from ratmalana today. Asked him why some UNP voters who voted in 2015 general elections , did not go to vote this time around , based on his watta people. He surprised me by mentioning Ravi K s name , saying that people are fuck mad with him for the pompous way he took everybody for fools , in his cover up story regarding the apartment rent he got from alosious. my mason and his family watches TV in the watta they live in and knew all about bond scam !. I think if he just admitted and said Sorry they may have had more sympathy !!.

After all sri lankans know the rajapakses are rogues but pretty cool with it.

Kusumawathie: You only met the voter from Ratmalana. Ask how the voters in Kotahena voted , where Ravi K is the “Organizer”. For your information UNP won it with Ravi K in control, while most other UNP stalwarts in Kotte, Ratmalana, Boralesgamuwa lost. How come Ravi K “WON” ?

I liked that bit about My3 pissing against the wind and wetting himself. Quite the situation he is in. He must be shivering in his wet pants contemplating what would happen if MR comes to power again. It is time for him to become a ceremonial president and let others do the running of the country rather than run around thinking he has any clout. He has the clout of a grasshopper. Ranil should go. He has sullied the UNP with the bond scandal. Appointing crook Mahendran was a blunder. Having cronies around him was the greater blunder. He, in his suits, are just not the man to lead the country. The JVP is never going to win in any major way. So, the UNP with its block vote is the only party that can stop the murderous Rajapakses from coming back to power. Better start grooming a younger leader leaving out people like Navin Dissanayake, the progeny of a racist plunderer, the inept son of Premadasa. Don’t we have some untainted young leader to take over?

Yes, there are some facts in that statement. But it is not saying by then if both EP and PM will be with either Chinese or Indian, i.e. a single party government, or one of that will be Indians and the other one would be with Chinese, a National Unity government.

The efficiency would be there leaving it with Old Royals so the Indian and Chinese can rule Lankawe under a unitary government, instead of SLFP New King and UNP Ranil. But if somebody wants to go with a proven record, cost of that will be only of typing up a flyer to Theresa, Britain “How about a new brand of Ceylon Tea and a pleasant vacation on beautiful white Sandy beach”. One more alternate option is, Tamils ruling themselves, so that Sinhalese can return to Lankawe and start to concentrate on ruling themselves.

Calls for heads will be solving nothing. Ranil is not the only Grinch, has stolen the Colombo’s Wesak. Ranjan Ramanayake, though not educated, would be the only good one to hold President and Prime Minister Positions simultaneously at this time. He may not know to count that big numbers, but the Treasury still doesn’t need safe box and electronic keypads.

This mob has lost their mandate. Try to drag it further will lead them to oblivion. MR is in no hurry. Put him behind bars, he will return as a much bigger hero and will shatter Sarath’s dream of never allowing MR power. The most prudent action is to seek a fresh mandate. Pundits say that since MR has got only 44% the mob can win. Therefore the legs should not shake at the thought of a general election.

Old King can get 100% but he is not going to take up EP or PM position. If his Royal Families members fill it up, their hands will be twisted out that guy on UN Electric Chair.
