Yahapālana Goalpost Disappears As Intimidatory Forces Grab UNP

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

‘With Ranil going off the field retired hurt and the party engulfed by hopeless, ignorant men that intimidate, what hope have we Sri Lankans? I ask AKD and his JVP to brace itself up fast to try and fill the gaps and complete the unfinished Yahapalanaya revolution. AKD is well-educated, knows his economics and is thorough in parliamentary participation. The JVP has a record of being the clean party with hands unbruised-and never racist.

Resurrection of a Monster

It is sad to announce! I hope I am wrong. But I see the end of the Grand Old Party. The Sajith Premadasa faction wouldn’t stop at getting nomination to a position that is only a shade of what it had been after 19A. The presidential executive is, today, a monster that has been only half-killed. Yet, being a monster, it can astonishingly revive  and resurrect by an evil resilience.

The faction that has proven its capacity for physical intimidation will move headlong ,manipulating the power it derives from a presidential electoral triumph. If they win the elections, Sajith and his pals will keep pushing the boundaries until they oust the respected, visionary and venerable leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. One cannot think of the United National Party sans Wickremesinghe. Without the latter having legitimately and sanctimoniously passed on the mantle of leadership to a suitable successor, the party lies in the dark doldrums. Remnants will continue to struggle, as we observe  in the tragic happenings of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party that keep unfolding before our eyes. There being no hereditary line of succession, the end will come. I give Ranil Wickremesinghe just one year and he will be gone if he is not made to go.

Ranil’s Historic Role

The Wickremesinghe era of the UNP had been crucial for the party’s survival under the stressful and traumatic conditions  imposed upon it during the heavy-handed, lawless, and corrupt regime of the Rajapaksas. Wickremesinghe brought the party back to power and has been firmly in the seat of governance despite the Sirisena let-down. The mandate that was won in 2015 was not merely for Maitripala Sirisena; Wickremesinghe, shared hat mandate since the main slogan of the 2015 campaign was that Sirisena will be president and Ranil, the Prime Minister. Ranil’s critics haven’t acknowledged that electoral triumph since it is not in their slant to do that. Ranil himself clinched a personal historical record of achieving more than 500,000 majority votes from his electoral district. That is a personal record that no MP would ever reach in a hurry. Yet, the much maligned hero of our politics is ignored on that score, too.

Wickremesinghe is a virtuous Buddhist who has mastered detachment. Hence, these things don’t ruffle him. His emotional management, derived as it is through an embedded Buddhist philosophy, has been extraordinary. He wasn’t actually happy about Sajith; yet, he embraced the idea as one of those inevitable events that come and go in our lives. The way he faced the no-confidence motions and the constitutional coup proves my point about Wickremesinghe’s deep Buddhist attitudes.

In this sense, Ranil Wickremesinghe has been the first true Buddhist leader in Sri Lanka. The downside of that detachment is that he cannot push himself beyond limits.

Sajith and his Faction

On the other hand, Sajith Premadasa’s faction are capable of physical  attack and intimidation. The latter made threats to attack Sirikotha. They once stoned the party headquarters.  One guy, state minister Ajith P Perera, wanted to go on a fast-unto death – in Wimal Weerawansa’s style. Nobody stopped him but he did not execute that threat although the country would have, probably, benefited from that move. Sajith himself threatened many a time that he would, disregarding his party, contest. That was party-law violation unsuitable for an aspiring leader. Hence, it was all an instance of success by intimidation. There isn’t any pretence possible and the kind of servile and supine statements of the controversial party Chairman, Kabir Hashim, make no sense.

Achievements of the Wickremesinghe Era

Ranil Wickremesinghe gave leadership to restoring democratic freedoms, to the restoring of judicial independence and rule of law, to public access of  official information and so on. He recreated the right legal environment for private investment. He was on the path to restructuring our economy from an import-dependent one to an export oriented one. In the latter effort, many successes have been on record. Our trade gap is narrowing and narrowing; our net foreign investments are positive; tourism is at its heights, a promising ‘Private Enterprise Sri Lanka,’project is on. The Gam pearly project has a lot of local development to its credit. No white vans coming to our doors in the dead of the night; no hit squads. Protestors are free from state terror and not a single such protestor has been shot at as we saw in Rathupaswala and Katunayake. Wickremesinghe’s record of reconciliation with the Tamil community has been exemplary. Even in the worst of times for the party, Ranil never allowed his men to resort to racism.

These are all leadership achievements to be celebrated.

However, inasmuch as Sajith Premadasa has been the most overrated leader Wickremesinghe has, all along, been underrated. The point is the latter does’t care to  sing his praise.

“Be unruffled in the face of praise or blame,” said the Buddha. That is Ranil

Last Hope: AKD and JVP?

‘With Ranil going off the field retired hurt and the party engulfed by hopeless, ignorant men that intimidate, what hope have we Sri Lankans? I ask AKD and his JVP to brace itself up fast to try and fill the gaps and complete the unfinished Yahapalanaya revolution. AKD is well-educated, knows his economics and  is thorough in parliamentary participation. The JVP has a record of being the clean party with hands unbruised-and never racist.

      nalmen,
I don’t think that Shyamon has any idea of what he is talking about! His first worry is about YP goals. If so, on what basis can he recommend Marxist to replace a UNP er? Does Shyamon has any idea what the difference between Marxists & UNP is?

This is the main reason I’m so happy that Sajith won; these people like Shyamon think that SL voters can be deceived to believe anything they say. How does he explain Ravi K’s close relationships with Arjun family? How come Ravi K, an expert in finance system in SL, didn’t know anything about Arjun’s involvement in the Bond Scam? What is the reason behind Ravi & Ranil close relationship? If they are not forthcoming with right answers, then we as the public have the right to suspect that something is not right.

I’m certain that many who hold cabinet posts thanks to Ranil went against him due mainly to embarrassment from Ravi’s involvement with Arjun family. That is not going against YP expectations!

I know for certain that there is no way to change the mind of Shyamon; for, he knows perfectly well what he is up to. What else is there to say if TNL could go so far as to side with MaRa/GoRa camp to retaliate Sajith? Do we need to support this kind of politics at all?

Shaymon, Sajith did it for UNP. Ranil did for himself. You are such a low level observer still sticking up for the most incompetent UNP leader ever. You are a shame.

Ranil has given in to thuggery and that is sad. Elder Preme did the first damage to the party even though the statesman JRJ gave in to him. The damage done then was never regained. This man Sajith has no vision and he is backed by Mariyakade thugs who are also rogues. We watch all this with sadness.. Sajith will be worse than Sirisena. So let us all face that.

      Shaymon Jayasinghe,

Everybody is replaceable. Ranil, Sirisena, Mahinda, CBK, Premadasa, JR, Srima, Dudley,Srima, Dahanayaka, SWRD, John Kotalawala, DS , all Paras, were replaced it are replaceable. However, many will try to hang on as long as they can.

There needs to be a generational change. Don’t need leaders who may spend half their time on hospital check ups.

The way UNP and the other parties are set up is that there is no primary election to select the most suitable candidate to be president, unlike in the US and other countries, and decided by the insiders.

So , the Sajith group took it to the People. The rallies were well attended. They had no other option.

Is AKD a better candidate than Sajith. Yes, in all areas, including intelligence. Is AKD the most suitable candidate ? Yes.

But in a Land where the mean IQ is 79, where the imbecile with an IQ of 49 gets one vote, and the voter with a common sense and IQ 109, also gets one vote, the best candidate does not always win.

I am undecided to whom to vote, I feel like I am lost. It is really disappointing grabbing the power by some thuggish group and the party seniors giving in.

      Kamal Silva,
It is very clear that your conclusion is based on SL system of selecting candidates. But, our’s is not the true democratic way. In the US, for example, selection for 2020 is already on like another election by itself. Party members are given an opportunity evaluate each candidate who must prove their strengths to be selected. Bill Clinton who was nick named Slick Willy & Barack Obama who was a black who became very good presidents wouldn’t have had a slightest chance if the US system is like our’s!

Sajith got selected b’cos a vast majority within the party supported him. I think that you are absolutely wrong to condemn the process. Instead, what you, me and the country should do is to make this election a pulpit to demand to make candidate selection process at all levels an open system. As I pointed earlier as well, such a competitive process will help to eliminate corruptions to a large degree. The current system of giving nominations to family members or to close friends encourages corruption even before power begins.

Shyamon’s worry that YP goals might be changed is utterly meaningless. YP came to end corruption but, instead, ended up with Bond Scam accusation. This made it necessary for a leadership change. In politics or in any social affair for that matter, changing tactics to accomplish larger goals is a time bound necessity; not a sign of a loss. For a detail discussion on this important management topic, pls read, “Built To Last”; James C Collins & Jerry I Porras; Harper Business, 1997.

Mr.Jayasingha says Ranil retires hurt, but isn’t that mostly his own fault? When the going was good in the first 2 years of Yahapalanaya, he should have locked up all the crooks, instead of treating them with Buddhist ahimsa. Instead he shot himself in the foot with the “bond scam” (which really was not as much of a big deal as Sirasa makes out).
In the final analysis , it just may be better to have Killi Maharaja’s puppet running the country (if he wins) than a Rajapaksa Rambo and his gang of “professional” crooks.

It has begun, Ranil’s lackeys are already trying to bring down SP’s campaign. To Ranil, it is better for the UNP to lose and Ranil remain leader of the opposition. Shyamon, there was a point where I agreed with you and respected your opinion. Now I see, you are nothing but the lowest scum. You are the equivalent of Dayan Jayathilleka, except, instead of licking MR’s boot, you lick Ranil’s. You scum

Shyamon, Lankan politicians in general are crooks and criminals with no exceptions. Today it was another “I said so moment”. SLFP released a statment saying they will not be standing in election but will be supporting Gotha. Few days ago Dayasiri and SLFP were promising public of never supporting Gotha. Statment further says, “there is not much difference in SLFP and SLPP in policy, governing and ideology (if there is one )”.???? My question is what took them so long to realize ???? From day one this not so united, government was formed I maintained the position that SLFP/SLPP and united front /opposition, (I am not sure what those bunch of rogues were called ) are all together but pretending, to the retarded public as though different. There main purpose of being in Government was to loot money as before, create road blocks, jeopardize government from functioning and passing inside information to Rajapaksas. Now at the opportunistic moment they all returned back to where they came from. Just to bullshit the public and supporters they were buying time, by saying they may stand independent if not join Sajith (but not RW), JVP, but never Gotha. In the mean time public, so called pundits and the rest (including CT readers) were in heated discussions and in depth analysis , about these parties as though they are different factions. Shyamon, this is all Lankan politics is about. It ain,t rocket science but ” loads and loads of Bull shit” played out for retarded public , since independence.

Every leader as well as every product has a life cycle. It time for Ranil to consider being the Foreign Minister in hopefully a UNF Government. The old brigade must give way to the young party stalwarts, who have a cleaner image than the old politicians.

Well done Shyamon. You have had the courage to say what appeared to be correct to you. Your assessment of Ranil is commendable. The conspirators will learn soon learn the error of their ways. What an irony that AKD is called upon to pick up the mantle of Yahapalana.

Ranil has proved to be spineless. He is not popular among the masses, only among the elite of Colombo. The fact that he has been usurped is his own fault.

When the rancher was lurking to ambush, Ranil was hiding the lion inside his rice pot. The lion is out now; Ranil has to hide. It is not just from Vaalaiththodam Jr, but Ranil will be getting his reward from Old Royals also for having them saved on his own peril. When Old Brother Prince was named as their candidate, UNPyers panicked and thought Ranil wouldn’t be able to compete against them so Ranil needed to be removed. Don Stephen protected Dudley from SWRD. JR stole it from Dudley (death was not a factor here). Richard .P (Vaalaiththodam Sr) stole it from JR. Now Vaalaiththodam Jr is stealing from Ranil. After all it was Ranil brought up Vaalaiththodam Jr in UNP as deputy PM. UNP history is another branch of Mahavamsa Violence for succession of the rulers. This is nothing new for Lankawe. But this was not the case with SLFP until Old King came. It was taken off from Old King without any violence too (; but future may not be same).
It is many times debated that the democracy is not suitable for Lankawe. By the same token, capital economy is also not suitable for Lankawe. So Lankawe has completed converting all parties as socialistic parties. The last liberal economy Mohegan, UNP is dead and reborn into UNCP- United National Communist Party. Thus there is relationship or correlation or connection exist when Shyamon invites JVP to take the leadership from here.
    Jayawewa!

Shyamon! What can AKD do without authority? What you are saying from your adopted home is all UNPers who worship Ranil like you fully prostate, must vote for AKD. I am unaware of the true picture of AKD amidst unconfirmed reports that he has a house in the Irish Republic. I have not forgotten the violence of 1988 to 1990 where both the JVP and the Premadasa regime were on a killing spree. Shyamon! You were not anywhere near an Army camp those days to hear the “Toh! Toh!”:noise indicating the carry out of extra judicial executions. I have previously commented about SRP being intolerant to different points of view to the extent of even using white vans. GR is a military man and we all know about white vans during his time, particularly under KH. The true colors of any army officer can only be identified on finding out what he did as one in the 1988 to 1990 era. Today the senior Army Officer who headed the Anuradhapura area those days is a priest in Ampara. During his time his small unit, called the I section used torture techniques to extract confessions. Simple. No bullets. You use a contraption to dislocate your arm from the body and you are just kept there starving to death. Any post mortem conducted years after wards can really reveal nothing. Though the JVPers today are the best participants of democracy today I am still not sure what they would do if and when they get authority. The smell and stain of blood still remain in their hands.

Now that our ex-venerable leader has lost any life that was in him, can ride yo the sunset and watch (would be) President Premadasa II and (would be) PM Karu J lead us to another five years or so of national destruction. Hope all this only would be a dream.

However this Kadey yanna journalist did not mention how Ranil got the CID to visit the former first lady to obtain Statements in respect of a Criminal matter to her residence. In respect of others they have to go to the CID. So much for the Rule of Law during his Governance. He sold Lasantha’s death to come to power and when in power he informs Lasantha’s Daughter that there are more important things than to pursue Lasantha’s Murder.

“Ranil himself clinched a personal historical record of achieving more than 500,000 majority votes from his electoral district. ” This comment of the author is somewhat childish for Ranil started from Biyagama and moved to safest seat in the safest district; Colombo South and Colombo district. What has Sagith done move from the safest seat in the safest district to most difficult district for UNP and kept his head without getting sunk. No president in recent history is a great intellectual in recent years. MR, Chandrika R Premadasa. Yet their achievements were no way proportional to their intellectual capacity.

Sajith Vs Ranil was like rural Vs Urban. The rural won because of numbers. I did not like the way Sajith secured the nomination. What can you say about a politician who said come rain or sun he will run for president. What happened to party discipline? He did not care to canvas his candidature within the four walls of Sri Kotha. In this respect, he is like his infamous father. While remaining in the party he mentally tortured Dudley Senanayake and later JR. Dudley’s premature death was largely due to Premadasa making life difficult for DS. When he went for the funeral of DS at Woodlands people threw stones at Premadasa.
On an intellectual level, Sajith is no match to Ranil. Sajith only knows how to build houses (the same old houses built by RP) and beyond that, he is an illiterate person when it comes to governance. That is why he said scientific studies should be done about abolishing the presidency. Where was he during the last two decades?
I also wonder whether Sinhalese caste system played a role in voting in Sajith and voting out Ranil. When Ranasinghe Premadasa was nominated as Presidential candidate, non-govigama castes all rallied behind him.
Ranil is the most knowledgeable and educated politician, but he never paid serious attention to uplift the rural folks standard of living. Gampereliya came too late in the day.

None of the Srilanka major political institutions has a democratic system to select their leadership whether it is UNP or SLPP or SLFP or TNA or MC. These political parties do not have policies or programmes. In many developed countries once a leader lost he just leaves the office and never come back. In the past 70 years we had Senanayaka family, Bandaranaiyake family, Mahinda Family,Jeyawardena family, Premadasa family(exception). Over 75% of national wealth own by these families. Except Premadasa family, all other families are converted Buddhists from Christianity.

Bad luck sucker. I feel sorry for you and your buddy RW. This is retribution.

Now what you can do is to make your buddy executive hangman.

  • 0
    0

    Shyamon,

In terms of education and temperament, RW may be better than SP, but you served under the elder Premadasa and also know that RW was a cabinet minister at a very young age when his uncle JRJ was President. Neither JRJ nor the senior Premadasa had any clean record; both committed atrocities; JRJ presided over July 1983.

In the end, the reality in SL is that voting will have to be strategic and not based purely on ideology; people will need to evaluate who among the candidates comes close to meeting their goals while having a decent chance of winning. And who, given their authoritarian past, should be stopped from becoming President by all means.

I suspect that the TNA and the Tamil people at large will end up voting for Sajith Premadasa even though they have many questions about where he stands on the ethnic question. Some may prefer AKD, but does he have a reasonable chance of winning? If not it will make no strategic sense to vote for him, except as a second preference.
