  1. I am against censoring of any type, but that is me. The question this episode really raises is if humanity is ready for freedoms and responsibilities. To that extent, I think Google has acted responsibly, by removing material that they saw as potentially causing further violence. What use is free speech, if it leads to murder? Murder completely misses the point of free speech.

Free speech is indeed great. It is a fantastic tool for solving many of our problems. However for it to work, we need to overcome a bigger hurdle. Human ignorance.

The creators of the video show in their video itself, what they expected the outcome to be. So to that effect, they are using free speech in an opportunistic and hurtful way. They have just as much blood in their hands, as the retaliating mobs.

Islamic society that has retaliated with violence, together with some others who have commented here, show a clear lack of understanding of how free speech work. Mixed with some of their hate towards the west, they show little interesting in finding out about the principles of free speech, and why it is held in such high regard by so many in the west.

Looking at the failures of most religions, and even other political ideologies such as democracy, I can’t see human rights or free speech achieving anything more than other great human philosophies and ideas have managed. Which is very little!

Humanity will always produce the odd person with wisdom who craves independence and responsibility. But the masses will always simply demand instructions. Taking responsibility, without the promise of rewards, or the threat of punishment, is simply asking too much of mass society. So perhaps it is time we accept that humanity itself will never be ready for freedom. As such, human rights and free speech are just as much a waste on humanity as Buddhism, Islam and Christianity.
