‘Eelam Dream’ And Tamil Elitism

By Sanjeewa Ranaweera

Sanjeewa Ranaweera

The LTTE was crushed. The face of the LTTE, Prabhakaran was eliminated. We celebrated, ate kiribath’, and even ignored the relentless abuses and excesses of our leaders just to show our gratitude. The prolonged curse of war was finally at an end. Yet, the voice of the LTTE was howling with pain. And this howls of pain seem to be continuing! No, it is not the pain of the crushing defeat. The real pain lies somewhere else!

The LTTE waged war for a separate country for Tamils, which they called ‘Tamil Eelam’. And the north and east of Sri Lanka was earmarked for this task. However, Prabhakaran’s dream was not just the independent state of Tamil Eelam. He dreamt of ruling the Tamil Eelam. And Tamil Eelam was not his dream anyway. It was the brainchild of the elite Tamil politicos. The late Chelvanayakam was perhaps the first to demand for it openly.

Well, to my mind, Tamil Eelam was more or less a notion of convenience or rather, an invention of convenience. Because, with the emergence of this notional Tamil country, the entire Tamil community was taken for a ride by its elite. Tamil Eelam was shown to be the cure for all the economic and social ills of the Tamils. Sinhalese leaders also, in their unthinking struggle for political power, contributed immensely to the broadening of the reach of this misconception. And eventually, Tamil Eelam became the foremost aspiration of the Tamils across the world. They, in the hope of achieving this flimsy objective, resolved to strengthen the weaponry of Prabhakaran’s ruthless terrorist outfit. Thousands of Sinhalese and Tamils were killed, tortured and left incapacitated. And the elite Tamil leaders became cult figures who espoused the great Tamil cause (Tamil Eelam) locally and internationally. In the circumstances, the burning issues of the masses [of the Tamil community] remained overlooked!

Well, one cannot blame the Tamils for supporting, directly or otherwise, the separatist agenda of the barbaric LTTE and of the so-called Tamil leaders. As human beings, we all have an inherent inclination to think of our race, religion and country preferentially. And that is why at the last General Election, we preferred the candidates who convincingly pretended to be nationalists and patriots. In fact, more the pretended patriotism, more the number of preferential votes! And now we see the veracity of their professed patriotism as they embezzle public money openly.

Similarly, Tamils were convinced that they were being treated differently because of their race. Our Sinhalese leaders too were generous enough to ensure that their Tamil counterparts’ game plan goes according to the plan. They (Sinhalese leaders) orchestrated the horrendous Black July and also, took many a short-sighted decision just for the sake of enhancing their vote bank. Sadly, Buddhist priests also commenced preaching ‘Sinhala Buddhism’ which is not known to Lord Buddha’s teachings. According to them, Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country! And the insinuation is obvious – “Tamils in this country are living on a foreign land”. When such outspoken comments were made publicly, it is hardly surprising that Tamils were under the delusion that Tamil Eelam was a cause to die for.

However, quite unexpectedly, Prabhakaran’s de facto Tamil Eelam collapsed as one Sri Lankan leader thought that the elimination of the LTTE was a better political option. And of course, his political calculation was proved overwhelmingly fruitful. He cleverly secured his and his descendants’ political future against all foreseeable obstacles. However, Prabhakaran’s lifeless body shattered the meticulously designed ‘Eelam Dream’ into pieces. The dream State of the Tamils was reduced to a permanent daydream. And the most wounded in this turn of events were the elite Tamil leaders, including the domestic mouthpiece of the LTTE. Because all of a sudden they lost their fashion statement, i.e. Tamil Eelam !

Nonetheless, after the initial gasp of astonishment, the Tamil elitists were back in business. Rumour mills were activated. And the most noteworthy rumour so produced was that “Prabhakaran, the undisputed leader of the notional Tamil Eelam was alive and was making preparations to revive the struggle for Tamil Eelam”. Several local Tamil politicos also echoed this ridiculous rumour in a desperate attempt to restore the shattered ‘Eelam dream’. But this laughable tactic failed miserably for obvious reasons.

And then came the ‘Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE)’ which is supposed to be a government in exile amongst the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora. Let alone the practicalities of the TGTE, it is doubtful whether the common Tamil man has at least a vague idea of what it is.

And now 88-year-old Karunanidhi says that ‘Tamil Eelam’ is the dream of his life and he will endeavour to achieve it together with like-minded people. He suddenly sought to revive the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) which was founded in 1985 and in fact, held a conference followed by a public rally. Clearly, the whole exercise was just another farce similar to the fast unto death staged or rather, exhibited by Karunanidhi during the final stages of the war. And incidentally, TESO was the name used to identify a well-known hacker group originated in Austria. Hence the name, TESO amply fits Karunanidhi’s pseudo-conference, because the prime objective of that media circus was to hack into the minds of the Tamils so that the ‘Eelam dream’ could be effectively re-planted. And no matter how unrealistic and far-fetched this ‘Eelam Dream’, it will secure Karunanidhi’s son, M.K. Stalin’s and other family members’ political as well as financial future.

Hopefully, there will be more farcical attempts to keep the ‘Eelam Dream’ alive as that will keep these hopeless elitist Tamil leaders alive in politics. However, at the end of the day, ‘Tamil Eelam’ is no different to the widely touted ‘Miracle of Asia’. Both are catchy, yet utterly ornamental political promises!

“And Tamil Eelam was not his dream anyway. It was the brainchild of the elite Tamil politicos. The late Chelvanayakam was perhaps the first to demand for it openly.”

V Navaratnam former Kayts MP started Tamilar Suyatchy Kazgagham or Tamil Self – Rule Movement, after quitting Federal Party. According to sources in the know he planted the idea of Eelam among the Tamil youth for which he received lot of flake from his former fellow party members. Navaratnam campaign organ “Viduthalai” (Liberation) was popular among Tamil youth since late sixties.

TULF took up the call for Tamil Eelam only after 1976. The LTTE was formed in 1972.

    Sanjeewa Ranaweera types:

“The late Chelvanayakam was perhaps the first to demand for it openly.”

Tamil youth demanded Tamil Eelam. The demand had reached a point of no return hence Chelvanayakam & Co had to relent to the youth.

Sanjeewa Ranaweera should check his facts particularly when he writes recent Tamil history.

    Sanjeewa Ranaweera types:

“In the circumstances, the burning issues of the masses [of the Tamil community] remained overlooked!”

Could he now explain what were these burning issues?

    Sanjeewa Ranaweera types:

“And the most wounded in this turn of events were the elite Tamil leaders, including the domestic mouthpiece of the LTTE. Because all of a sudden they lost their fashion statement, i.e. Tamil Eelam !”

The “fashion statement, i.e. Tamil Eelam !” was dead on arrival in 1976. Federal party knew it, TULF knew it, all 31 or so Tamil Eelam groups knew it, above all LTTE and its un-elected leader Mahinda Prabaharan knew it except Sanjeewa Ranaweera.

In the pre LTTE A Amirthalingam and his

Finding a political solution was indefinitely postponed because LTTE was the root cause of all evil.

In the post LTTE era, finding a political solution was indefinitely postponed because LTTE rump and Tamil Diaspora are the root cause of all evil.

In the future finding a political solution would be indefinitely postponed because Karunanithy and his TESO would be the root cause of all evil.

You can find as many Tamil evil doers whose political activities continue hinder “finding a solution to the Tamil problem”.

“The “fashion statement, i.e. Tamil Eelam !” was dead on arrival in 1976”

Yes, it was dead but the need for it was just about to get started, for those who thought it as “dead”, ’83 made them think and Mullivaikal made T.E as the only possible way out of this mess.

Sanjeeva needs to probe further about what happened long before the infamous Black July.
He appears ignorant of events which led to tamils taking up arms, unable to suffer the many massacres of tamils any longer, simply because they were tamils, without any provocation whatsoever.
    http://nesohr.org/hrr/?show=all
These were all massacres by the armed forces,of tamil civilians, without any rhyme or reason, and are convenianly forgotten, but are seared into the memory of tamils.
Without these, the 30 year war would not have happened, with the loss of tens of thousands of lives of both sinhalese and tamils.
This idea of an autonomous region which some called “tamil eelam” would not have been born.

What is the use of writing and rewriting of this same racial issue over and over again? Is it an exercise to display the literacy eloquences of the writers to satisfy the literacy taste of the readers??
It is very sad that no one is focusing on the real issue to come out with a viable Action Plan for Nation Building.
The best of brain our mother land ever produced was that of Late SWARD Bandaranayake. Had he been not gun down by a very senior Buddhist Monk we would have by now gone far ahead of Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore and they would still be tailing behind us. The force which motivated the killer to gun down the first non white President of Debate Society of Oxford University remains still at large.
The real issue in not racial! Singhalese are as good or better than Tamil in every respect from my own experience but we, the writers, the readers, the MPs, the Ministers and even the President is unable to or not willing to distinguish this force and mistakenly label it as racial. We are treating the patient without diagnosing the ailment. That is why we remain sick for over half a centenary.
We will continue go down the drain as we have been since the PM was gunned down by writing and rewriting this stuff over and over again!!!!!!
Do we have a way forward? Mr. Ranaweera please come out with one if you can diagnose the true ailment.

LET US STOP ARGUING ABOUT THE PAST, AND START BUILDING THE BRIDGES BETWEEN NORTH, SOUTH, EAST & WEST, AND GET ALL SRI LANKANS TO UNITE AND GO FORWARD,
GET RID OF THE WORDS “SINHALA BUDDHIST NATION” AND “TAMIL EELAM”.
RACE, RELIGION, CASTE & CREED ARE THE WORDS THAT DESTROYS A NATION.
WE ARE ALL CITIZENS OF “CEYLON”, “SRI LANKA”, “LAND LIKE NO OTHER”, “PEARL OF THE INDIAN OCEAN”, “WONDER OF ASIA”, “SERENDIB” OR ANYTHING YOU WISH TO CALL.
THIS “ISLAND PARADISE” OF OURS IS THE ENVY OF MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. WE SHOULD ALL BE PROUD OF IT.
WE SHOULD UNITE AND GET RID OF ALL THOSE WHO ARE BRINGING BAD REPUTATION
    TO THIS ISLAND.
BRING BACK “CAPITAL PUNISHMENT” AND START HANGING THE CONVICTED, MURDERERS, RAPISTS, MOLESTERS, THIEVES, PEDOPHILES.
THIS CONVICTION & PUNISHMENT, SHOULD START FROM WITHIN THE SO CALLED ELECTED LEADERS OF THIS ISLAND.

What I do not understand is that why Sam is ignorant on the fact that most ,if not all, of the Tamil Issues are due to poverty and other related hard ships. This is the same for Sinhalese, which is the most true historical base for the Sri lankan Civil wars. Probing to the past is not the point in this article. It is about how Eelaam was and still being used by total foreign context to secure their political status, and that creates havoc among local community.

DO NOT blame others for the mistakes people locally have made, I think

what happens more regionally over time gets internationalized, if for a

moment had the past leaders who exercised power not worried “changing a

man to woman” but instead for the people “locally” there would be NO

      foreign interference.

The Eelam Dream is neither a Tamil Elitist Dream nor a pipe dream. It’s Real. The day the rest of you come to terms with it the better. Eelam bashing may be one of your pet peeves, but why don’t you try digging deep within your heart and consider the real possibility of Eelam, not as a “notion” or an “invention” or in our imagination but as a nation deserving of recognition, the proclamation of which is actually the restoration of a nation that was “separate and sovereign, existing side by side with the Sinhalese nation from the dawn of history dividing between them the possession of the island of Ceylon.” (now Sri Lanka)
The idiom: When ignorance is bliss tis folly to be wise was made exactly for people like you. Don’t fool us that you are not a racist but a pragmatist.

      Dear Usha,

Let me assure you that, just like your Elaam dream is so dear for you and so real, we proud Sri Lankans also have a precious dream. That is to cut off the head of the Elaam monster everytime it raises its ugly head. AT ANY COST. We will lay down our lives not just to protect MotherLanka, but to BBQ the flesh of the Elaam monster. We have been so good at it, because we have been doing it for ages.

So my dear, it is your dream against ours. Are you ready? Let’s play.

          Kana,

Full blooded, proud Sri Lankans always put aside their ethnicities, religions and cheap politics when MotherLanka is threatened. They don’t forget where they took their first breath of life and walked first steps when they arrived from nowhere.

Be informed that we mastered the art (and science) of “BBQ” from none other that the Tamil Terrorists who have been viciously attacking us for centuries.

We are very seriously aware that the Tamil Terrorist Diaspora, assuming numerous causes and labels are busy, planning day and night how to rape MotherLanka at the first given opportunity. Because, this threat is in the birth certificate of MotherLanka.

So, join me in singing our motivational song… “Nee Waanga Machaan….”

The reference to ‘Tamil elite’ begs the question – what about the part of the ‘Sinhala elite’ of yesteryear who overwhelmingly propagated racial venom in their endeavour to jeopardize the impended inevitable reforms after independence. The residue of them and the imitators of their mindset still stalks the land, some of them enticed by the peace vendors of the West.

    Usha S Sri-Skanda-Rajah:

“The Eelam Dream is neither a Tamil Elitist Dream nor a pipe dream. It’s Real”

No it was and is a nightmare albeit a prolonged one. It could have been a sweet dream, had VP used his brain instead of sitting on it.

By the way where is VP, his family and his Pottu Amman. Does Pottu live at Gota’s house?

When are you going to accept the death of VP and remember him as your sun god leader?

His birth day is being celebrated as Martyr’s day. His death should be celebrated as day of partial liberation.

Could you elucidate me on the idea of “Nation” and link it to your experience and conditions that is prevailing in your imagined Tamil Eelam, supported by sound political theories and practices that you find common in the study of Nation.

    • 0

“It could have been a sweet dream, had VP used his brain instead of sitting on it”

Tamil Eelam is not for VP to do all the thinking, he fought against the military establishment the instruments of sinhala chauvinists who secretly planned to destroy the identity of tamils in eelam(tamil word for srilanka).

It is up to the tamils in their millions to fight the economic
establishment which depends heavily on consumers, has its roots in Delhi and sponsors the Sinhala chauvinists.Economic victories impact politics than the military ones do.

        Jegath

        is confident:

“he fought against the military establishment the instruments of sinhala chauvinists”.

He also fought for the military establishment Sinhala/Buddhist one of course. It could have been a sweet dream, had VP used his brain instead of sitting on it when he decided to take on the IPKF and sacrificed Tamil youth.

        You say:

” sinhala chauvinists who secretly planned to destroy the identity of tamils in eelam(tamil word for srilanka)”

Come on it was never been a secret plan.

        You say:

“It is up to the tamils in their millions to fight the economic
establishment which depends heavily on consumers,”

Even after sacrificing so many young lives you do not seem to have learned anything at all. It is really Tamil stupidity, which always looks for ways and means of self destruction.

I am more inclined to feel the LTTE (8,000-15,000 youth according to GoSL estimates at the time of this pyrrhic victory) were defeated after many decades of battle – many non-Tamils, including those in foreign lands, were certain they would win) They lost against a modern, well-equipped force of nearly 400,000 (Army, Police,Navy, Air Force pummeling them from the ground, air and sea with no regard to civilian or collateral damage of life and property)
By any account this was no war of two sides of equal strength. By sheer numbers alone the Govt side should have won years ago. But, as we now learn, the war was big business for many in the South – the politician, men in the army and the other 3 froces. Many have huge assets in the West, in North America, Australia and Singapore. Huge fortunes were made in the South even by the lesser cadres in the forces . It is not an exxageration to state keeping the war going benefitted a whole lot of VVIPs, VIPs – both uniformed and civil. Just to satisfy the pseduo-nationalists in the readership here, it was soalso in Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan – though for slightly different reasons. War brings misery to many and fortunes to a chosen few.

But I agree with the Writer’s notion the defeat of the LTTE was not merely good for the Sinhalese – but for the Tamils as well. Because,
VP, who began as a passionate and romantic freedom fighter in the mid-1970s, transmogrified into a one-track despot. He was not the first and neither will he be the last in world history. He ruthlessly killed those even close to him who did not share his views. He destroyed the present and future of millions of Tamils. Yet his original dream and of many other youth who made the supreme sacrifice for the battle for justice for the Tamils remains and the struggle continues – in different theatres, forms and players outside the battle-field. The answer lies in the Sinhalese finally coming to terms with the ground reality.

What TGTE is today is what the ANC was in the 1970s functioning from Lusaka in Zambia. S. African President Verwoerd and later the Botha Brothers mocked at the ANC as some do the TGTE today. And so it was
when Yasser Arafat and the PLO were laughed at by the Israelis. I am no TGTE fan although I am not against them in their fight for justice for the Lankan Tamils; their agitation for a Tamil Homeland that was lost in 1505. I suggest people don’t laugh at the diaspora. They mean no mischief from the comfort of their homes in wealthier lands. They have no intention to harm the territorial integrity of the country. They feel for their near and dear – who suffered so much in the recent past and who saw hell on earth during the war. Their quarrel is against the Sinhala supremacists of today who refuse to
concede justice and reason – inspite of the entire region and world
sympathising with the Tamil cause for justice.

You say you voted “for nationalists and patriots” in the previous elections. Are you wiser now? They are neither – but blood-suckers who came to power cheating the Sinhala people. There is one who lived in a
near wooden shack at Kadawatha (suburn of Colombo on rent – only a few years ago. He fooled the young and the new leftists with his swaying Sinhala oratory. This sycophant is said to be now living in a Palace in the Maharagama area – to the shock of the poor people of the area
who admit they have been taken for a ride. He is only one of many hundreds who profited from turning politics into a business by using the anti-Tamil card. The country’s economy was not ruined by the LTTE or much by the war but by traitors in national garb of this variety.

As an educated and articulate Sinhalese think about this. If the Govt and the Sinhala people are fair why are only the majority Tamils in the Northern Province denied their right to elect their own Councillors even today? Many are beginning to. Even the JVP, who reached political heights on the anti-Tamil platform, are now in Jaffna “to be with our Tamil brothers and sisers” I welcome this as I welcomed the change of attitude of that extremist communalist semi-literate Sarath Fonseka – when he bowed down in prayer at Nallur Kandasamy Kovil. His attack of good sense and intelligence, if you will allow me, seems to have come after he did much damage to the Tamils while in uniform and in another avatar.

So, my friend – the Attorney at Law, be wary of the use of your language. Even the ANC and PLO were considered to be pursuing “flimsy objectives” at one stage. They are now members of the community of nations today with their seats in the UNO. Unless the Sinhalese wake up the best option you will end up soon with will be AN UNDIVIDED ISLAND OF TWO NATIONS IN ONE COUNTRY – a reality that is now engaging the interest of many thinking citizens in both sides of the divide.

Tamils and Sinhalese have over played this card “if you are not with us you are against us”

For them “if you can’t play the ball play the man” is basically the tool with which they destroy any discussion, as you know they cannot articulate a cohesive argument for or against the discussions as they do not seem the need to (“gather information, read it, process it and get those ideas across to your opponent”) spend time on analysing as you know both the Tamils and Sinhalese are………………….

We are drifting again to where we have been for decades. Singhalese and Tamils! No Sri Lankans?
Sri Lankan Tamils did not gain Independence in 1948 as Singhalese did. British colonizers English language was replaced by Singhalese’s’ Sinhala and the cloudy state since independent was cleared with ‘Sinhala Only’ legislation subsequently. The reality is Sri Lankan Tamils remain under a ‘Singhalese Colony’ to date and their desire to be librated is natural. VP or not.
Once we devise an Action Plan to liberate them instead of intensifying the colonization process, sky will be the limit for Sri Lankan as we were better than Indians, Pakistanis, Malaysian or any one you name it as the Queen parents, the rulers of most of the nations in the Globe then, choose a Sri Lankan as Her tutor. Well… Well… Well.

I am not surprised to see that the Tamil terrorism topic still draws a crowd. There are so many theories, Sri Lanka ‘experts’ from Arctic to Antarctic, propaganda from channel 4 to BBC and demonstrations from London to Tamilnadu.

But I have a question. In this new era for Sri Lankans, who has time and wants to analyze who actually were the Tamil terrorists?

The bottom line we have to bitterly accept is that the Tamil Terrorist Diaspora, the TTD*, has been killing Sri Lankans since donkeys age and definitely WILL ATTEMPT TO DO IT AGAIN, in liaison with their foreign sponsors. That is the cardinal truth.

Instead of reading every Tom, Dick and Harry’s opinion, lets prepare ourselves to the task at hand, which is to take country to the next level of prosperity while sharpening the lion’s sword to give a taste of it to the deadly TTD, when the request is made.

We had Black July and India had a far worse Black October when thousands and thousands of innocent Sikhs were raped and massacred in N.India in October-November 1984 by Hindu goon squads. In India the Right wing RSS Hindus continuously perpetrate violence against Muslims. At the Babri mosque gory violence was perpetrated by Hindus against Muslims.

The demolition of the Babri mosque triggered a wave of religious violence that claimed 2,000 lives. For 17 years, the destruction of the Babri mosque by a Hindu mob in the northern town of Ayodhya has marked one of the darkest days in the history of independent India.

The demolition, on December 6, 1992, is making headlines once again after the official inquiry into the razing of the 16th-century mosque – an event that triggered a wave of religious violence across India that claimed 2,000, mostly Muslim, lives.
Several senior figures in the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – including the former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were implicated for inciting Hindus to commit violence while giving outward assurances that they were doing their best to maintain calm.

If marketing is deception would it matter who uses it and for what purpose? The state, the rulers and their supporters always have marketed their deceptions through campaign, propaganda, electioneering, etc, cynics call it spin otherwise it is known as public relation.

      So what is your problem.

The author hits the nail on the head when he says that “Buddhist priests also commenced preaching ‘Sinhala Buddhism’ which is not known to Lord Buddha’s teachings. According to them, Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country!”
This I think is a fundamental flaw in the Sri Lankan culture that will stand in the way of any settlement of the ethnic issue. The longer this issue goes unresolved the country will suffer from the loss of people who are either not “sinhalese buddhists” or who cannot stand the hypocrisy of this buddhist version of ethnic cleansing.

My hopes for the reconciliation in Sri Lanka are not realising after 62 years of waiting …
I was born and bred in this Country long before you.
In 1948, I was of age, I was present with a lot of hope and expectations at the Galle Face Green, when I was one of those who welcomed and greeted Independence.
On that day I was like you, I did not know that there was a majority OR minority.
The happenings of subsequent years which I will tell you briefly opened my vision. I was forced to accept that I was a Christian and from the Minority.
In 1956 I was again at Galle Face, this time to see a new Prime Minister. I was shocked at the events that followed.
The Sinhala crowds were assaulting individuals in Verti and sarong presumably Tamils.
My 2 Catholics brothers were killed for not reciting the “GAHATHA” somewhere near Minneriya.
In two cars the Catholic brothers numbering about seven were fleeing the riots towards Colombo in 1958. The Catholic ladies were sent in the first car.
IN 1958 IT DAWNED ON ME THAT I WAS MINORITY, BY LANGUAGE AND RELIGION.

This situation never got better, I was threatened in 1983 this confirmed that I now belonged to the Minority.

NOW IT STANDS THAT WAY AND I KNOW IT WILL NEVER CHANGE.
Tamil Eelam is the only safe place for Tamils in Sri Lanka

    Since 1948
Massacres of all sorts have taken place in this Country.
Even today the people of all ethnicities are being massacred by the Government. We do not see the spilling of blood nor the loud wailing but we know that many hearts are bleeding.
This is definitely worse in the North and East of this Country.
The barbarians of Africa, the head hunters of Borneo the savages of South America are all blood thirsty, but they did not pretend to be religious or virtuous they enjoyed what they did even today some these Countries are living up to these acts.
But in this Country the Country which has embraced Buddhism one of the greatest philosophies the followers or pretenders are blood thirsty.
The Sinhla Government is a reflection of its people.
A GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE.
    This is the sad irony
How many riots has this Country had since independence?
All the riots were directed towards the minorities.
Such a magnanimous loving charitable Country conducted a historically unknown “humanitarian operation” and that too with zero casualities, killing thousands and thousands and now shamelessly saying there were “only” few thousand casualities.
So you can see the mindset of this Nation comprising 71% Sinhala Buddhist.
Untill there is a total recognition of the frailings of the Sinhala man there can never be true reconciliation.

The more and more the Rajapakse clique chooses to play games and avoid
settling the National Question, the further the already bankrupt country will sink into the mire. Comments in this blog reveal even senior well-meaning Tamils of a liberal inclination are beginning to lose confidence in the hoped for unity and reconciliation. I am sad to say the Rajapakses lack the strength, the honesty, the statesmanship
and the courage to usher in a bold new beginning.

      Senguttuvan says:

” I am sad to say the Rajapakses lack the strength, the honesty, the statesmanship and the courage to usher in a bold new beginning.”

I share your concern however I never had any illusions about both Tamils and Sinhalese ability to see the big picture. If both want to get out of the pit, first they should stop digging.

Sinhala/Buddhist have only one agenda, transform the country into one nation, a Sinhala/Buddhist nation. The process goes on, militarisation, colonisation, assimilation, hoping that in the near future the island turns into “Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer” (One nation, one empire, one leader).

      Please read Gananath Obeysekre’s paper

“Where Have All the Vadas Gone? Buddhism and Aboriginality in Sri Lanka” in The Hybrid Island edited by Neluka Silva

In his introduction this is what he observes:

“In recent times their numbers have shrunk further as a result of the Sri Lankan government’s development proggrams. These recent trends and the apathy of the native Sri Lankan Buddhists have lead to several Eoro American interventionists movements to save the Veddas and ensure their ‘cultural survival’ and cultural revival.

This should be a lesson to all minorities living in this island, including Sinhala speaking people.

@CT There is someone one masquerading under my name.

Ask him to use Rajapakse’s name and not mine and confuse anyone.
    This is fraudulent…

Enough of these bogus names by these freaking cowards.

This is totally an unwanted article at this juncture. Looks like some people have started learning how to write articles to a blog. All what this writer has written is well known (nothing new) and has been repeated several times by many other writers. What a waste of cyber space and our time.
