NPC Elections: Jaffna Commander Interviewed And Selected Candidates For SLFP

Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and Northern Province Major General  G.A. Chandrasiri have jointly interviewed and selected about 20 candidates for the Northern Provincial Council Election and the Army is in the process of transporting them to Colombo today.

Maj Gen Mahinda Hathurusinghe

Colombo Telegraph learns that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is conducting the interviews to select their candidates for the Northern Provincial Council Election. The Interview panel consists of Ministers Susil Premajayantha, Hahindananda Aluthgamage, C.B. Ratnayaka, Karaliyadde and Fouzie.

In response to their newspaper advertisements they have not received sufficient number of applications and therefore the SLFP has decided to engage in alternative course of actions. In respect of each of the Districts in the Northern Province, only the following number of applications have been received:

Jaffna – 21 (including Daya Master and Remadius)

Mulaitive – 00

Vavuniya – 02

Mannar – 03

Kilinochchi – 06

In the mean time, the SLFP leadership has been informed that Major General Haturusingha and Major Geneal Chandrasiri (Governor) have jointly interviewed and selected about 20 others, who will also be interviewed today. Army is in the process of transporting them to Colombo now.  The President has already decided to put forward Daya Master as the Chief Ministerial Candidate with full military backing. Meanwhile, the EPDP and Rishard Bathurdeen have been sidelined for the time being due to their differences of opinion on the 13th Amendment issues.  Muslim Congress has already informed the SLFP leadership that they would contest the Northern polls on their own.

According to the election commission sources, confirmed by the the SLFP leadership, the declaration of the election is scheduled to be made on 5th July while the election day will be 21st of September, which date has been suggested by the President’s astrologers.

Was’nt Sarath Fonseka charged for doing politics while on active duty?
    So what is Chandarasiri doing?

This does not surprise me as military is doing everything:
    Farming
    Tourism
    Hospital
These are known ones: the unknown could be
    Murder
    Kidnapping
Brothels and even drugs so politics should not surprise.

          “Still under control of Terrorists”

The less educated citizens of Northern Province might be confused as to whether the LTTE truly went away once they see people like Daya Master, KP and Col Karuna going around the place like VIPs but this time with sinhala boys to escort them as opposed to tamil ones.

So,an army regime is to be officially installed in the north.
This must be first instance worldwide of armed forces selecting candidates for provincial legislatures.
This confirms that the army rules in the north even now.
    Devananda’s opinion should be interesting.
With all his support to the repressive regime,EPDP too is not going to get seats nor the Chief Minister’s post!
This is planned intimidation of voters in the north,as the army will “canvass” votes and none will dare to show preference for other candidates, on pain of what will happen to them.
Will the army also select officials for the polling booths, and for counting of ballots?
The regime is worried that if the normal process is allowed,TNA candidates may win the majority of seats.

Will the army also dare to select candidates for elections to the other two provincial councils where elections are to be held?
    If not,WHY?
    P.S
We are the only country where the head of state plans his politcal future according to “astrologers”!

It seems like a slow slide to a Pakistan like situation, where the army’s position is over represented in the affairs of the country. I only hope the regime realizes the danger of going down this road as it is not always so easy to control the thing you create.

SO this shows how popular is the present Govt in the North, even to select a candidate. When the real election comes who is going to vote for them ( I mean these selected candidates) The ARMY itself. Good grief.

The army in Sri Lanka should be considered a patriotic association of people who defend the country and not consisting of people aggressive out of touch with the people.

Sri Lanka army has not only contributed to defend it against terrorism but has contributed in its development process and is vital for the unity of communities and promote peace and security. They are of the people and are not against any Community.

Our security or peaceful existence, depends on the Sri Lanka Armed Forces

“Our security or peaceful existence, depends on the Sri Lanka Armed Forces”

Yes dear chap and who controls the Armed Forces? I’ll give you a clue (as a patriotic lankan)- this person’s name begins with a ‘G’ and he spent much of the 1990s as an economic refugee in USA. Therefore forgive us if we are skeptical on hearing news that another of Prabha’s old boys Daya Master is being hoisted onto the Tamil political scene with full military backing of the patriotic lankan army whilst EPDP Douglas mama gets shifted to the sidelines

MR,GR,BR are all people who have given to Sri Lanka and its people what they never had before and no one will ever be able to give Sri Lanka and its people what they have given.

If they accumulate wealth as you say, they perhaps have a right to to do and they will one day give it back to the people. It is not the separatist diaspora Tamils and NGOs living on blood money of the terrorists who will give any thing to Sri Lanka or its people. They can only partake their hatred and non productive hateful vituperations.

The most idiotic comment I have seen on this forum.

Rajapaksa may have ended the thirty year scourge of war but the sixty year ethnic problem remains and is likely to lead to war again. Charles Perera, like many of his Rajapaksa arselicking ilk, are hero worshipping Rajapaksa and are blind to what is happening around them. The country has been made into a hell hole of vice, criminality, corruption, lawlessness, fear and dictatorship by the Rajapaksa brothers. Sri Lanka and its people will be indebted to the Chinese for generations for the enormous amount of money Rajapaksa has borrowed from China to create unwanted edifices to remember him by. His government he runs comprise drug kingpins, rapists, murderers and other unsavoury characters that is giving the country a very bad name. The sooner this corrupt and criminal Rajapaksa family is removed from power the better for the country and its people.

How fitting you replied to CP’s mad comment with one of the best I’ve ever read. The real sad thing about SL is that many of its individual members (be they sinhala, tamil or muslim) are very respected amongst the professions in western countries yet the leadership on the island (for all ethnic groups) is very lacklustre and corrupt. For every idiot like Gotabhaya in the majority community, we have people like Sampanthan making brain-dead comments to senior Congress officials in Delhi that Prabhakaran’s death has weakened the Tamil political position in Sri Lanka when obviously it has improved it (especially post-UN human rights council).

In North there should be permanent Army Camps for the security of the people and to assure them peace. It is up to the Tamils to make the Soldiers more friendly and part of them, treating them as brothers and sisters.

They are more useful to the Tamils in Jaffna than all the Tamils in Diaspora, the Farther Emmanuel and his Tamil Global Forum, and the Mannar Catholic Priest Rayappa.

Not only army camps but also massive colonization schemes.

      That is the only solution.

“Not only army camps but also massive colonization schemes. That is the only solution”

Indeed and it will bring much long-term benefit to Sri Lanka via rock-bottom relations with neighbouring tamil nadu inc. further calls for indian navy intervention to protect fisherman etc, continual activities of united Tamil diaspora in sympathetic western govts leading to further UN human rights council humiliation and in the end of course, western-led economic boycotts, sanctions etc leading to SL becoming the Zimbabwe of south asia

Colombo Telegraph states that “It learns that the Army is interviewing”. Without making such vague statements can you produce solid evidence to prove your news article?

Please state from where and from whom you learnt it, with the names, so that the readers can verify, because no other news agency has any idea about this.

Only some LTTE supporters who are thrilled about this sort of stuff, are going to town with it but not the ordinary people, who are far more intelligent.

TNA Goons who have no political intelligence, but a one track mind of devolution, separatism and Eelam cannot think positively.

They complain against a former Military officer being the Governor of the North. They should be proud that they the TNA and Tamils in Jaffna have a former Military officer as the Governor. He will assure unity of the Communities, prosperity of the people, and provide them security. Because he has fought for the Unity of Sri Lanka, saved the Tamil people from their suffering under terrorism and he knows how to provide security as it had been inculcated to him during his carrier in the Army.

A former Army Officer as the Governor is thousand times better than having TNA PC Councillors, who will not know what to do with their Office as they lack intelligence to reconcile communities and make Tamil people friends of the Sinhala and build together a great Nation of Sri Lankans.

oi ignorant idiot, what a load of crap you are talking about. there is no role for military in a democracy. a civilian government will engage the military only when there is an external threat or internal calamity. i don’t think sri lanka at the moment faces either of the two. therefore sinhala black monkey army should remain in barracks. it’s the norm in democracies. i have never seen army soldiers roaming around in the streets of democracies i have visited. okay there was a conflict but it’s all over now. anyway black chandrasiri should make way for a civilian governor. why should black fat slob hathurasinge gets involved in selection process. in short there has to be a tamil governor for a tamil province. we tamil people don’t want muslims or sinhalas to come and live amongst us. muslims are back stabbers besides killers of our holy cows. sinhalas are criminals, convicts, thieves, rapists and child molesters. you better keep them with you. we don’t want them.

      You idiot Charles Perera
Assume you had some disagreement with your wife and family. Then the village lead (Gota) asked most barbaric, muscular thugs in the village to stay in your house to make sure you and your wife and daughters are safe. How do you feel like it? Actually your initial problem with your wife and children will be resolved. You will concentrate on how to protect your innocent and physically not strong wife and daughters from these Gota’s thugs

When IPKF was there, IPKF handpicked the winners of the northern province – 17 seats to EPRLF and nothing to others without an election!! Only east had an election.

So what is wrong with the SL army doing same now?

    Indian example.

Jaffna Mayor, a TNA Council member and several card carrying members of these opposition parties are among the applicants to contest under UPFA banner.

These people all live and have lived in Jaffna all along and not the weekenders who travel with Sinhala Police escorts.

Current TNA lot in our House of Assembly, were hand picked by the LTTE supremo.

Poor inhabitants were escorted to the polling booths by the LTTE soldiers to ensure their “safety”.

And these inhabitant voters came from one third of the land mass.

It was so peaceful and democratic that none of this lot of Democrats , Human Rightists and Philanthropists who look after the poor war widows never made a even a hum,

“Current TNA lot in our House of Assembly, were hand picked by the LTTE supremo.”

      LTTE hand picked Tamils.

A Sinhalese hand picks Tamil candidates.

A member of armed forces hand picks Tamil candidates.

I hope you see the difference.

Is this Jaffna Commander a party organizer for SLFP? If so please ask him to remove his uniform.
