Oh! What A Nation!

By Helasingha Bandara

In the West we are known as a short, fat, black and ugly nation. Now we have lost our dignity, pride, self-respect, spines, ethics and morals. What are we left with? Nothing! What a nation we have become! A ‘nothing nation’!

Indeed our country is beautiful. The world admires its natural splendour, magnanimity and hospitality of at least some of its people. We have a glorious history to talk about and be proud of. But then, what has happened to us.

Are there any signs left in us to claim that we are the decedents of the people of the caliber of Wariyapola Sumangala, Maddumabanda Ehalepola, Puran Appu, and Keppitipola and so on?  Hardly! Some recent examples I may bring in to highlight the despicable and undignified state that we have descended to.

Sarath Kumara

The school teacher who was threatened, abused and forced to kneel down did not have any reason to lie. The entire school, the teachers and the students saw it. The whole country knows that it is true that this rogue did what the teacher claimed that he did. I myself caned one student at D.S Senanayaka Vidyalaya a long time ago. His father happened to be an MP from Gampaha district. The father came to the school the following day. As a very young and inexperienced teacher I was afraid that I would be in trouble. To my relief I later learnt that he only came to report his son’s absence on that day, nothing to do with the caning. Sadly that era is long gone. Today’s teacher has to learn from the politician’s son or daughter instead of teaching them.

Our law is as such that it needs eye witness accounts to prove that this beast has done it. The police are powerless, ignorant and corrupt. In a developed country the circumstantial evidence that the police gather and/or other evidence that the police can get hold of through espionage, scientific and technological means are more than sufficient to nail a perpetrator in a court of justice. In Sri Lanka, the whole system and the people are so stupid that the court cases are still won or lost on flimsy evidence or legal arguments such as “Goyam Kolayata wehila wedi Thibba”, shot from behind a paddy stack.  Only in a country full of idiots a lawyer can win a case on the ground that the leaf of a rice plant is too thin for a man to hide behind it. Only a moron of a prosecuting lawyer fails to prove that, that the witness meant a paddy stack not a leaf of a rice plant both of which are called ‘Goyam Kolaya’ in the vernacular.

Making things even worse, we have created a monstrous political system in which the witnesses can be easily intimidated. The Director and the other high-ranking officials of the education department who seek favours from the politicians either for survival or for little perks can threaten other teachers with unwarranted transfers or possible hindrances to promotion to shut them up. The local hooligans can be bought to intimidate the students. Who will then come forward to give evidence? None but Sarath Kumara with a few garlands around his neck, surrounded by thousands of people.  He will reiterate that he was never there, he had never seen this teacher before but the teacher knelt down before a hologram of this politician on her free will. The funny reality is that a Sri Lanka court will accept that explanation in the absence of eye witnesses. The matter would be brought to the parliament by the ruling party as the final decision of the court of law, absolves the monster and thus the case be swept under the carpet.

The irony is that, the very same people who came to receive Sarath Kumara when he was given bail, the very same people who shouted slogans for his good health and political resurrection, if given a presidential decree to finish him off, will eat him alive, only metaphorically. Look at him! He personifies thuggery, ignorance and evil. The grandfather lie that he spewed out to the effect that he had not even seen this teacher before would be sufficient for the law abiding, ethical, dignified and just people to eat him alive.

The nation

The nation has descended into such an indecent depth that people come forward to defend even such rogues perfectly knowing what the truth is.  Hundreds of people marched along to welcome Duminda Silva. Some women at TV interviews said that it is only a miracle performed by God that they could get their semi-god back alive.  It had been the same in the cases of suspected murderer politicians such as Sampath Chandrapushpa Vidanapathirana, Mervin Silva and a few others. How come people condone murder under whatever circumstances? How come the politicians such as Arundika Fernando, Indrani Dassanayaka went to the court to support such a criminal like Sarath Kumara in public, only because they know the nation has become a nothing nation without a spine, only because condoning evil is welcome by the regime. The ability of the nation to call spade a spade is long gone. Of course, Fernando is making a habit of manifesting his tomfoolery. He is the one who recently said that Ekneligoda is living in France while it is perfectly clear that he is in a solitary grave, six feet under, like the rest who were buried in the Matale mass grave and other graves around the island without receiving natural or man-made justice. Tissa Ballale was quoted as supporting Sarath Kumra. Tissa is far too old to make a sensible judgment and he deserves to be retired.

As a nation today we are prepared to lie while the truth is crystal clear, as a nation we are prepared to pardon the most ruthless killers, as a nation we are prepared to march in favour of the powerful despite that they commit heinous crimes against ourselves, as a nation we are prepared to let the politicians, their sons and supporters, abuse our mothers, daughters and wives, steal the wealth of the nation, terrorise and intimidate the public and pervert the course of justice. What can we call ourselves other than a ‘nothing nation’?

His gedi walata hena gahalada Sihalunne (S .Mahinda Himi). Are the heads of the Singhalese thunder struck?

You also have go the same mental illness that many more from that region get. Only thing is you had some guts, probably you are unaware about it, to express that you love everything western and you don’t even the way look. That IS INFERIORITY COMPLEX.

Forget Sri Lanka. Just criticize and help to develop your naturalized country.

      Dear Jim Softy,
When western white Christian found malpractices in their churches , it was the white Christians who came forward and forced Gov, Bishops, Police to dig deep into issues and fix them. It wasn’t Muslims or Buddhists showed them what was wrong with their priests, it was Christian who came forward with their love and believe in Christianity seek justice.
What people like Helasinghe trying to do here is the same.

Jim Softy, Reduce your egoistic attachment to your tribe and religion, then you should see reality and believe in power of goodness/wisdom of your own religion and tribe/nation. Don’t wait till minority Tamils, Muslims, UN, AI come forward to fix your issues.
With the wisdom through detachment, you will realize that “Short, Fat, and Black” is as beautiful as “White,Tall and Slim”.
      With love,
      Anura

Agree with you totally. It is very difficult to get to the Sinhala mind which is conditioned by the myths of of over 20 centuries. I have seen similar closed minds amongst many Jews, Muslims, and Fundamentalist Christians. Sadly the Sinhala Buddhist uses Buddhism as a tool to propagate their racist Sinhala beliefs whilst ignoring Buddhist teaching, but they would be the first to say they are protecting Buddhism when they are merely asserting their Sinhala beliefs. The present government uses this weakness of the Sinhala people to control them. To my reckoning the Sinhala people are unconsciously(say ignorantly if you like) destroying Buddhism.

No point going back in time and blaming anybody. You and I must speak up on good and bad, right and wrong NOW. We are the present.

In the West we are known as a short, fat, black and ugly nation.

In the author’s imagination, perhaps. All that matters for reputation in the West is $$$. 30% of all UK doctors are Indians, and 1 in 20 American doctors are Indian… a similar result is there for Sri Lankans (overwhelming number of doctors). So the “native” populations in these countries have an image of “Asians” as rather clever and a threat to their jobs.

      Helasingha Bandara,
      Thank you for writing this
timely piece explaining what a pathatic situation
we have in SL, in terms of upholding
the rule of law. It is utterly disgusting
      how Rajapakshas protect scumbags
      like duminda, mervin
and others who repeatedly commit crimes
time and time again with absolute impunity.
      Pseudo patriots perpetuate this corrupted
immoral Rajapaksha family rule by pointing
fingers at the west. I know for a fact how
Rajapaksha crony port authority chief discarded
SNC Lavallin report which indicated the Rock
issue with regard to devopment of Hambanthota
harbour, and paid millions of dollars to Chinese
      engineering company produce another
report omitting the rock issue. Sad part is SL
government got the SNC report free as it was
funded by CIDA. Now we have to barrow millions
of dollars agin from china to solve this problem.
More loans from china means more dollars
in commission for corrupt Rajapaksha family.
This is how Rajapaksha patriotism works in
      SL.

        Problems lie somewhere else.

The bunch that are in lanken cabinet today should raise the question. None of them seem to have guts to react against him. Though few like Rajitha seems to have changed his way to some extent. Why the majority among the ministers do so as if they have been paralyzed letting their leader to do what he think is always right. President seem to have no good advisers. That is glass clear. Looking back to any issues in the last 3 months for example, has the leader taken any good step against even solving any of them. He pays the blind eye usually fooling the same folks by his sorta rhetorics. So, Chinese relationship is made boomed because they the brutal chinese are merciless while abusing others. This is comparable to a parasitical disease. MR administration has no policy – just getting deceived by Chinese to this date.

Yes Lester…but the only problem is that all the fellow Doctors/Engineers/IT people know that SL people came to America/UK because it is also hell hole and has implemented discriminatory policies towards it minority population.
Let alone the accusations of war crimes!

That is the sad truth Lester. You and your ilk would get hurt easily, but this is merely the truth…. about our people.

At the time Dulip Mendis was the playing cricket, this was how lankens were called. There, this writer is fully correct. Now the picture has been changed since tamils refugees are scattered across the europe. The truth as it is, 99% of the tamils that got to these countries as refugees are not educated people. Average people in Europe cant distinguish the differene between two folks. Dark skinned tamils – they call as srilankens. I dont think that they can even read and write their mother tongue well. But human smuggling agencies have brought them somehow to european destination. People over here call them “srilankens” not as tamils. Only few states called them tamils. For not providing school education for them, our former govts have gone on records -provable discriminations against the tamils. Like or not this is the truth about the tamil community. Guilty lies on the previous govts. They are not even good enough to live in lanken metropolitan cities so how can they get on with european cultures. Many of them work as all kind of low levels jobs to run their families. If you travel through EUrope, you will get to see the SLtamils everywhere.

Yes Abaya, we are the kindest of the nations.Through the last 50 years we have roasted the youth of our country alive,we took a blank cheque to eliminate thousands of youth in order to prevent them rising up in the future, we are a kind nation that at a village off Kandy, even children being suckkled by their mother were killed, either shot at point blank range or taken by their legs and slammed against the culvert. We are a kind nation that allow Budhist pirests to sodomise children and attack the mother when she cries we are a kind nation that allow a Buddhist priest to rape a young girl few days before she attained age.We are akind nation where, father does the same thing to his daughter.Budu saranai, Devi saranai

Yeah, we were somewhat a lovely nation. And now, we are ruled by a bunch of villagemen with chronic inferiority complex, overshadowed by a sense of insecurity that usually follows it. Sadly, many of us have yet to realize the severe detriment we are in. Soon, others would have capitalized and pillaged this country. Be taken over by a western country … We will at least have rights and freedom along with justice and an established system along with education and opportunities…..China!! What a country to be dominated by!!

This is the sad reality… read it below.. todate nothing has been changed with HR issues thought it took several months after UN imposed the second UN resolution… not even few months left to begin with CHOGUM summit.

    ——————–
The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka has been summoned by the External Affairs Ministry to seek a clarification on a travel note issued by the US State Department to US citizens visiting Sri Lanka.

An External Affairs Ministry official said that Ambassador Michele J. Sison is to be asked why such a travel note had been issued.

The US State Department had, in the travel note, cautioned it’s citizens when visiting Sri Lanka of crimes targeting foreigners.

As was first reported in the Colombo Gazette on Saturday, the travel information for US citizens visiting Sri Lanka said that while most violent crime occur within the local community reports of violent crime and sexual assaults directed at foreigners have been increasing in recent months.

In response to this rise in crime, the Sri Lankan government now requires that all foreign tourists provide their passport information to hotel staff when registering at local hotels and guest houses so that this data can be used by local law enforcement for the monitoring of foreign tourists.

U.S. citizens have also been advised against travel on public buses in Sri Lanka, as passengers can be targets of criminal activity and bus drivers do not all obey driving regulations.

Travelers, especially women, should consider travelling with other people when possible, the travel information notice said.

It further adds that organized and armed gangs are known to operate in Sri Lanka and have been responsible for targeted kidnappings and violence, although there is no evidence to suggest that U.S. citizens are at particular risk.

It also says the Sri Lankan justice system can be slower than in the United States and there are a number of outstanding cases of crimes against foreign nationals, including the murder of the British national noted above, which have yet to be prosecuted.

“Western women continue to report incidents of verbal and physical harassment by groups of men. Such harassment can occur anytime or anywhere, but most frequently has taken place in crowded areas such as marketplaces, train stations, buses, public streets and sporting events. The harassment ranges from sexually suggestive or lewd comments to physical advances, and sexual assaults have occurred as well. While most victims of sexual assault have been local residents, an upswing in sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas in the southern beaches underlines the fact that foreign women should exercise vigilance,” the notice said.

    Abhaya Premawardena
You criticize Helasingha’s name. I don’t think you even know the meaning of your own name. Look at the hatred you piss out using filthy language on people far better than you are. How can you be a premawardena? Your parents have got it all wrong. You should be called “Vairawardena”, a hate monger. Abhaya? You have no sense of mercy in your clogged up head. I feel sorry for people like Helasingha wasting their valuable time to inculcate some sense into your stupid heads. Indeed they write such articles for people like you because the country is in this state because of people like you who cannot think. Your blind patriotism (rather stupidity or ignorance) makes you pretty much oblivious to the truth. I have read most of what Helasingha had written. He is more Singhalese than all your family put together. He is more patriotic than 7 generations of your family put together. Have you read his articles such as “Prabhakaran Personifies Racism”. He has done a tremendous silent service to our nation that an idiot like you can never think of. You are the type that even the murder of the British Tourist will be OK by you because it is committed by a Sri Lankan (Ape ekkek). I believe Colombo Telegraph should not waste its space on blinkered fools like you. I would like you to send your photograph to Colombo Telegraph for us to judge why you are so upset about this article. Do you not see that Helasingha is telling what other people say , not what he thinks idiot? Read lines not between!

More than the short and ugly it is the cultural traits that make us unattractive. The lack of respect for each other, unfaithful, unreliable, shodiness, and narrow mindedness come to my mind.No embassy will accept the various declerations we make on our visa applications. WE love to live in first world countries. Also we are poor workers , very rare to come across good professionalism. In fact we have a culture which looks down on any work.Even women have shrill voices and are rude and crudly acquisitve. They will go to any extend to promote their children, and will generally jump a line without any consideration for those standing there. We will suck up to big guys and also to foreigners. Our business is based on bribery , commissions and influence.I think in general it is a crude culture which admires foolish things.

If President is law abiding in his performance Sarath Kumara would have not done this to lady teacher. Because President is so soft for his members they do things as they think right. So we have to assume these incidents as part of Mahinda Chintanaya administration. So far has President fired a single SLFP member for any wrong doing at least for Murders? This clearly shows President’s in-direct approval for his members’ born wild behaviour. I dont blame Sarath Kumara but such characters are given ample freedom to do what they want by the leadership. That is the reason we cannot expect good governance or miracle of Asia under Mahinda Chintanaya.

As long as the leaders of the country strive to maintain Sinhala Buddhist supremacy the educated and the uneducated, the politicians and the bhikkhus, the people who are in public life and the common man will keep supporting the Rajapaksa regime regardless of its indiscretions, criminality, corruption and other vile habits.

The only situation that could turn the people against the Rajapaksa regime is economic hardship as is happening at the present time in Egypt. The regime is trying its best to distract the people from their economic woes by stirring up the time tested anti minority hate campaign but the deteriorating economic conditions will one day topple the regime. The government’s attempts at militarisation of society appears to be an attempt at preventing such an eventuality.

There aren’t any politicians with a backbone on the government side to openly question the Rajapaksa regime about its criminal and corrupt activities. Shameless criminals the people have chosen to rule them!
