On The TNA’s Post-Election Statement

By Malinda Seneviratne

Malinda Seneviratne

R. Sampanthan, leader of the Tamil National Alliance, has offered the party’s reading of the recently concluded elections for the Eastern Provincial Council.  As the party with the backing of the majority of Tamils, the TNA’s analysis warrants comment.

The TNA claims that the elections were neither free nor fair, lists numerous illegal and corrupt practices and blames the repeal of the 17th Amendment of the Constitution for this state of affairs.  There were indeed several incidents which scarred the entire process.  On the other hand, even the TNA would admit that immediate action was taken by the Elections Commissioner on each and every occasion.  There were independent election monitors on the ground and even a cursory glance at reports from such entities from earlier elections would show that the incidence of wrongdoing was comparatively low.

The overall margin, a mere 6217 votes, gave the ruling party 2 extra seats, which goes to show that even a minor tweaking of the law can have a huge bearing on outcome; all the more reason for further tweaking the system to eliminate error and loophole.  To be fair, the repeal of the 17th did not take us back to anything like the 1999 Wayamba elections, but democracies are never perfect and for this reason can always be made better.

It is heartening that the TNA has decided to speak of systemic flaws and chosen to list all the violations, especially since the TNA’s constituent parties and their representatives, especially R. Sampanthan, were not only silent about the body blows to the democratic process delivered by the LTTE but actually benefited from these same violations to enter Parliament!  This about-change then can also be read as a positive outcome of taking the LTTE out of the political equation.  For that, the TNA, Sampanthan, as well as the Tamils who voted for the TNA and the TNA can thank the President and the security forces.

Sampanthan has blasted the Government for trying to intimidate and/or purchase those elected on the TNA ticket.  Which country has Sampanthan being living in?  Was he not intimidated and/or purchased by the LTTE?  Weren’t those who didn’t toe the line murdered in cold blood?  That said, he is spot in objecting to such despicable moves, even though he demonstrates an unfortunate degree of memory loss.  It’s wrong of course, but his case would be stronger if it was preceded by a confession.

The TNA takes pains to claim that the result showed that the majority was against the Government.  Sampanthan forgets that the SLMC is a constituent member of the ruling coalition.  A regional preference for a communalist party does not indicate general antipathy to the ruling party at the political center.  Sampanthan’s ‘logic’ can be turned against the TNA, SLMC, UNP and JVP as well.  It can be said that the majority of the people rejected all four parties.  Today, for convenient, Sampanthan concocts an artificial solidarity among all parties excluding the UPFA.  He does not mention the fact that all four contested SEPARATELY.  If there was solidarity and commonality in political platform the four could have contested TOGETHER.  The ‘mandate’ was not to ‘function against the UPFA’, as Sampanthan likes to read it.  The mandate given the TNA was different from that given to the SLMC, JVP and UNP.  It is sophomoric to aggregate these and posit a re-reading of mandate that alleviates one’s political angst of the particular political moment.

Another strange element of the TNA statement is its tired lament about the SLMC’s decision to back the UPFA to set up the Eastern Provincial Council.  Sampanthan is upset that the SLMC chose to play second fiddle to the UPFA in the East even after the TNA offered the SLMC the Chief Minister post.  Well, it seems that the SLMC or at least its leadership had done a cost-benefit analysis before making a decision.  Sampanthan, of all people, should not be surprised, for he has played that kind of politics for years.

What is really disconcerting is the cheap attempt to tag the TNA to the SLMC using the language-string.  The commonality seeker ‘Tamil Speaking People’ is straight out of the LTTE book and the larger archive of Eelamism.  At best, it was a convenience.  The way it got played out over time is a history lesson the Muslims are not likely to forget anytime soon.  They were slaughtered by the LTTE who were not bothered about language commonality when the blood-letting was planned and executed. And Sampanthan should know that ‘language’ was not an issue when Duraiappah was murdered, or when his own leader A. Amirthalingam was shot dead.  He probably has a list of all Tamil-speaking Tamils assassinated by the LTTE and he should know better than anyone else how long it is. It constitutes the ‘final word’ of this kind of cheap, racist politics.

Anyway, when Sampanthan describes the SLMC as ‘opportunistic’ and ‘unprincipled’, he conjures images of pots and kettles and their relative blackness!

Sampanthan has also kept silent on the fact that the result laid to rest all claims of ‘Tamil Homeland’.  The vast majority rejected the concept (and this, following Sampanthan-TNA logic).  Those numbers seem to have escaped his mind.  Not surprising.

Overall, it’s time for the TNA to do a re-think and amend this post-election analysis.  It would be good for the TNA and good for the Tamil people too.  For us all, one might add.

Sambanthan is an old coot who made the TNA irrelevent in the East by turning up his nose at the elections there in 2006 so Pillayan had a cake walk.. But why don’t you write about Hakeem who takes the frigging cake?!
Hakeem has sold out the Muslims of the East to the Sinhala Buddhist nationalists at the centre to keep his perks and now the SLMC is cosy with the UPFA that was threatening to move its mosque in Dambulla.. and is distracting the foolish Muslims by protesting big time some idiotic film made god knows where at the US embassy in Colombo. How’s that for a brilliant strategy of distraction from the main issue which is local, eastern province and national politics in Lanka and not films made in the US..
Clearly the huge protest today at Galle Road has massive State patronage..
This is bread and circuses all right! Mahinda has fired a warning shot that he will not only use Sinhala Buddhist nationalism but also Muslims to deflect critique of the Tamil issue by the US!

Another bloody [Edited out] article by Malinda who [Edited out]. Ha ha ha.

This [Edited out] forgets that Rajapakses party boss and founder Bandaranayake was murdered by a Sinhalese Buddhist monk.
How many thousands did the JVP Sinhala terrorist kill of their own people in 1971 and 1987-1990. Has Malinda forget that the terrorist murdered Sinhalese planters, bankers, policeman, and those selling Indian medicine and Parripu??

Has Malinda forgotten how MP Mahinda Rajapakse hit a policeman in Katunayake airport on his way to Geneva to complain against the GOSL and President Premadasa, and meeting Tamara Kunanayagam in Geneva!!!!

How many Tamil MP’s Rajapakse’s murdered in the first 3 years of their regime?? 5 Tamil MP’s.

How many journalist were murdered including Lasantha?

How many hundreds have been white vanned and how about the Grease Devils sucking blood out of the breasy of young Muslim women?

100,000 Tamil civilians were massacred and slaughtered in 2009, using chemical weapons, cluster bombs and phosphorus bombs. 310,000 Tamil civilians were incarcerated in concentrations camps and were under cruel and inhuman conditions. Many went missing, raped and tortured..

Now 80,000 widows and young children are complaining of rape and molestation on a regular basis. (Under 18 are children)

Even young male children are sodomized by these sex starved maniacs.

Rajapakses have the dubious distinction of making 500,000 Tamils homeless in the North and the East, and stealing their property as well as other land to give it to the military and Sinhala fisherman and colonist..
India is still struggling to build the 50,000 homes for the Tamil homeless and now Muslims and Sinhalese want some of those houses as well. In 3 years only 1,000 homes have been constructed…

All development in the North is related with benefits to the military or the 100,000 Sinhalese visitors and colonist.

Tamils are aware that Rajapakses stole the EP PC elections. Even the UNP and some Muslims are aware. It was the computer Jilmart during the 30 minute power cut brought in the additional votes to Pillaiyan suddenly…There was enough and more election violations and Rajapakses cannot behave like the LTTE or Malinda has to be so damn stupid to compare what an organization like the LTTE did in 30 years and what the Rajapakse has done in 7 years of state terror..

Malinda has forgotten that before he was born the Sinhalese attacked Tamil homes, offices businesses, women and looted and stole from 1958, 1961 (Satyagraha) 1977, and 1983.. That gave rise to armed resistance to state terror and some offensive actions to remind the Sinhalese that violence is not the monopoly of the Sinhala military and racist…

Nobody talks about the tens of thosands of innocent Tamils who were maimed, killed, tortured and raped by the Sinhalese and the military for 30 years. Arbitrary arrest, beatings and incarceration without trial for years. It is still happening NOW and Malinda dreams that Sri Lanka is a democracy with fraudulent elections..

Wake up all the Sinhala racist-chauvinist and do not think the Tamils and the whole world are deaf, dumb and blind… Just talking about LTTE’s violence or undemocratic actions will cleanse the war criminals and state terrorist…

Malinda has forgotten how the Rajapakses and Tiran Alles bribed Emilkanthan and the LTTE to boycott the 2005 Presidential elections and cheat Ranil Wickramasinghe and the UNP of the Presidency.

    What Temerity!!!!!

      [Edited out]

Please note that the Rape, Molestation, and repression of the Tamil women, and children (Under 18) by the Sinhala Buddhist is not a SEX story or Porno stuff. This is very close, near and dear to the Tamil hearts and minds.. The Rajapakse M -F…………s, think they can reconcile with the Tamils and win their heart, minds and votes???

They and their servile supporters like Malinda need to get their heads examined and check into Angoda… These writings are not just for fun, but serious stuff, and will end up in US courts for the War Criminals sooner than later…. I agree it has taken a little too long…

UNP and Fonseka supporters as well as the JVP who do F……… All, but simply want a free ride.. and even change of administration… That won’t happen in a hurry, if they all wait looking up for something to happen… This includes CT, SLG, LNW,LEN as well.

What matters is on the streets, courts and halls of power and not Cyber Space.. That applies to TGTE, GTF and TAG as well.

      I agree with you.

However, have you ever talked about LTTE killing Tamils, Muslims and the Sinhalese? Ethnic cleansing of Muslims from the North is not a subject that the Tamils want to discuss.

Whenever I raise this subject most Tamils reject it swiftly : “That was then, lets talk about the future”.

The Tamils and Sinhalese have a selective ethical, moral, legal,…..memories and policies which they think will take their people to liberation.

I don’t expect you to comment on your idea of reasonableness.

Having no fair means to stop the increasing popularity of the TNA, the Govt tries desperately to assassinate the political character of its leader – the senior Parliamentarian/Lawyer R. Sampanthan. One sees this recently in many spheres – jerks like Rambukwella, Ranawaka, Weerawansa and sections of the Kept-Press repeat this parrot-like.
Malinda S is trying what he can do to satisfy the Rajapkse diktat – which only goes to lower the standards of servile journalism in the country today.

Rambukwella in yesterday’s Press Conference says “TNA is welcome to return to The Talks” As usual this blabbering Minister has not understood the issue. The “talks” TNA refers is that between (1) the Presidents nominees of his senior Ministers ()2) the TNA team – that was arbitrarily called off by the Govt side -as announced by the Rajapakse Wonder Boy Sajin Vaas? There is no way of the TNA being suckered into another Rajapakse trick of yet another Parliamentary Tamasha – merely to buy time. Ask Prof Tissa Vitharna.

      @Senguttavan.
      I agree with your sentiments.
And these hypocrites talk about reconciliation???
Cheating even on the powerless and fund less small EPC.
So greedy for Power and Money…

Same with the Northern Province PC. They cannot have elections even 4 years after the LTTE is not there? Is that the freaking democracy and reconciliation these bastards are talking about…

They want the Tamils to be like the spineless, gutless Sinhala Buddhist Major who was attacked by some friends of Malinda’s political idols like a pack of wolves… Now the victim is being punished, humiliated, and would have to ask for forgiveness from the drug dealers and crooks.

That is exactly what the Jingoist want the Tamil voters and politicians to behave.. Be apologist and accept some guilt, as if the TNA and Tamils started the riots from 1958 to 1983 and they deserve the concentration camps, rapes, torture and be massacred. All the LTTE fault and also the current rapes, and molestation, land grabbing and stealing of the poor people’s homes/land, motor cycles, vans, and push cycles.

When the NGO and India replaces some these Pariahs are waiting to steal.
      GREED…

Until and unless Free & Fair elections are held, citizens cannot democratically elect their representatives.
The EP elections were massively flawed – nearly 280 violations recorded by independent monitors.
A government which flouts its own election laws is the lowest “democracy” ever.
Anyone who justifies such an election belongs to the lowest ‘grade’ in what is called “journalism”.
After 64 years of “independence”, this “dharmadwipa” is yet unable to hold flawless elections.

Sampanthan and TNA cannot take the moral high ground in accusing SLMC of a Muslim sell-out. It is true that SLMC carried out communal propaganda to win seats in the Eastern provincial council. They campaigned for a Muslim Chief Minister. Using their bargainng power they have now succeeded in installing a Muslim as the new Chief Minister. Their nominee will become the next Chief Minister in two and half years time if Mahinda Rajapakse honours his promise. SLMC and muslims in UPFA have also succeeded in getting four out of the five Ministerial positions plus the Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship allocated to Muslims.

Stupid Eastern Tamils missed out this time. It is their own making. If TNA wanted power in Eastern Province they should have gone for an all-Tamil parties alliance in the East like what Thondaman and other hill country Tamils did in the Sabragamuwa province. They should have put forward such a proposal to Pillaiyan and he might have agreed. Instead TNA carried out a vicious campaign against Pillaiyan. Despite that Pillaiyan showed he is someone to be recognised by winning nearly 23000 preference votes from the Tamils.

Muslims have right from the beginning identified themselves as a separate ethnic group. They identified themselves as Muslims not as Tamils like the Tamil Nadu Muslims. They never wanted to be identified as Tamil speaking people although their mother tongue is Tamil. Sampanthan and TNA cannot be heard to say that Muslims are Tamil speaking people having the same issues and problems. Muslims never associated themselves with the struggle of the Tamils though in the past some individual politicians came forward to contest under the Federal Party and TULF symbols. Even those individual Muslims who got elected as candidates of these Tamil parties later disassociated themselves from the Tamil parties. Masoor Moulana of Kalmunai and Mohamed Ali of Mutur are good examples.

Sampanthan and TNA instead of crying foul should sit down with the government and seriously engage with President Mahinda Rajapakse. They cannot expect the international community or India to get them their rights. Instead of laying pre-conditions, TNA should agree to participate in the Parliamentary Select Committee proposed by the President. Let them go to the Select Committee and put forward their demands and see what happens. If President Mahinda Rajapakse is not serious about finding a solution through the Select Committee he will be exposed. They can then tell the so-called international community that the SL government cannot be trusted any more to agree to the just demands of the Tamils.

Excellent analysis of FACTS??? My foot!!!

This kind of “Excellent analysis of FACTS” is good only for the insane and the mentally retarded (racists). If Malinda Seneviratne visits Angoda with such articles he may be well received with a loud applause.

BTW, American Lanka Lover, are you anywhere closer to a mental institute??? If not, it is right time for you to visit one, you will find many Malinda Seneviratnes there.

I am with blogger Naga TNA should have gone for a Tamil alliance to come with a Tamil EP Chairman. I have no information if the TNA did make an attempt in this regard. Whatever, the result of the conspiratorial machinations by those concerned, the reality is the EP – with the larger Tamil population despite State-aided colonisation and other crimes to reduce the Tamil numbers – should ideally be chaired by a Tamil (I hate to sound communal here) with sufficient space created to satisfy the Tamil-speaking Muslims in the District – now in increasingly larger numbers. The other undeniable fact is the TNA, as a single Party, scored more votes than others although the 193,000 that went to embelish the Election Commissioner’s statistics is merely a story for the Marines. Speculation is rife in the District Pillaiyan could not have secured that large number of Preferential Votes despite the engineered power-cut late in the noon and the sudden surge of
    votes for him.

Sampanthan and Co cannot make unsubstantiated allegations that a power black out resulted in Pillaiyan getting the highest preferential votes among the UPFA candidates in the Batticaloa district. If they suspected foul play TNA counting agents could have objected to the tally and called for recount at that time. Why didn’t they do it? Even now it is not too late, TNA can file an election petition challenging Pillaiyan’s election.

TNA and its constituent parties are well known for making this type of allegations. First they said their candidates were intimidated and could not move freely. They made all sorts of allegations against the government to win the Tamil votes. When the SLFP cadres wearing blue shirts went about canvassing for UPFA that silly fellow Ariyanenthiran MP made statements to the Tamil web-based media that “Grease Devils” have come back to Batticaloa. In every election platform they said a vote for Pillaiyan will be a vote to install a non-Tamil as the Chief Minister of Eastern Province. They told the Eastern Tamils they should vote for TNA if they wanted a Tamil Chief Minister. They changed the tune once the results and it became apparent that they cannot form the new administration. Now Sampanthan and Co who canvassed for a Tamil Chief Minister playing the communal card said they are prepared to make a Muslim the next Chief Minisster of the East and went begging behind the SLMC leader soliciting his support to form the new administration. When Rauf Hakeem rebuffed their overtures Sampanthan went hysterical and cried foul about a Muslim sell-out to Mahinda Rajapakse. This very same Sampanthan who accused Rauf Hakeem of selling out the Muslims to Mahinda Rajapakse became a pussy cat and gleefully met the President without even telling his TNA colleagues. Even his close confidante and power broker Sumanthiran MP was not there when he met the President whereas the latter was accompanied by some of his cabinet ministers. Suresh Premachandran in a recent press release has levelled a series of allegations against Sampanthan.

TNA was the brain-child of a couple of pro-LTTE Tamil journalists based in Batticaloa. The chief architect was Taraki Sivaram. They were LTTE agents who created a political organisation to represent LTTE in Sri Lankan Parliamentary elections. Even India considered TNA as the agents of LTTE. I still recall the image of Sampanthan holding a set of files and walking behind LTTE’s Political Commissar Tamilselvan after a meeting with him in his LTTE headquarters. TNA and Sampanthan recognised LTTE as sole representative of the Tamils. They made this as their election slogan at that time. This very same Sampanthan who was taking instructions from Tamilselvan is now critical of the LTTE.

Sampanthan and Co went to India in mid April 2009 at a time the fighting in Vanni intensified and over 300,000 Tamils were kept as human sheild by the LTTE. They made an appointment to meet the then India’s National Security Advisor M.K.Narayanan in the Indian Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi. Sampanthan was accompanied by Mavai Senathirajah and Suresh Premachandran. At this meeting Narayanan had asked Sampanthan & Co to tell LTTE to lay down arms and asked TNA leaders to join with other Tamil parties like ENDLF and issue a statement calling for India’s intervention if they really wanted to save the innoncent Tamils. Sampanthan’s reply was that they will consider it after the Indian Lok Sabha eletions are completed. He need not have asked Pirapaharan to lay down arms. But,had Sampanthan been a true leader of the Tamils and had the interests of the Tamils in his heart he should have at least asked Pirapaharan to release all those Tamils he kept as hostages and as human shield. He never uttered a word.

Sampanthan like all other TNA fellows wants to be an MP. He is not a leader and he has no leadership qualities. He was an LTTE puppet then and he is now the puppet of the pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora. With people like Sampanthan masquerading as Tamil leaders, only god can save the Tamils.

It is a pity we keep on thinking and acting in ethnic terms. If any minority ethnic group keeps, acts and try to propagate its ethnic identity through a political organisation or party it is doomed to remain ouitside the possibility of obtaining political power. It will be playing second fiddle to the majority party all the time and continue to be frustrated all the time.Ethnic identity should be maintained and developed, accepted and respected not through adversary political activities but through cultural exposure and development. The present Indian priminister would never have reached that position if he headed an ethnic party of his ethnic group. What the minority ethnic groups should do is to form non ethnic parties or join non ethnic parties and through them propergate national policies which are beneficial to all groups and are non discrininatary. The first step I belive is to do away with names of political parties denoting ethnic identies. Will any member of an ethic group vote or support a political party carrying an ethnic name or tile of a diffrent ethnic group. When parties givie ethnic title it restric itself to a particula ethnic group and if the group is a minority group they will never be able to gain power. This leads to permanent political fragmentation of the society. So if while having poilitical division(a healthy democratic feature}which are flexsible we should try and avoid political division on ethnic basis. So let us start by not giving ethnic identifiying names to political parties. Then make it a requirement to include a certain minimum mumber of member from each of the major ethnic groups for obtaining recognition as political party.Little such step may go a long way in creating ethnic harmony.
