Our Rotten Pillars, Politicians & Bureaucrats

By Ravi Perera

Ravi Perera

A cyclone of unusual strength has sent the nation reeling.

In a good part of the island, violent winds and gushing waters left a scene of utter destruction; bridges blown away, roads damaged, buildings brought down, rail lines swept aside, houses destroyed and much of the farmland left in ruins. Many a family have lost a dear one while many more are left destitute. A poor nation sees its hopes and aspirations receding further into the horizon.

We are inclined to see the earth as bountiful, custom-made for human needs. Occasionally we are given a sobering reminder that an evolved primate, undeniably versatile as he is, is yet a tiny creature in the larger scheme of things. A creature who has entered the stage only recently relative to other species of much longer histories on earth, but whose activities have impacted the planet like no other. Nature is indifferent to the tragicomedy enacted on her stage. Natural calamities hit virtually every country in the world

His capabilities have enabled man to assault our life sustaining earth with a savagery no other creature can match. As their numbers multiply, humans continually claim more land, jungles are cleared, other animals inhabiting the earth are pushed into small reservations to live only as a tourist attraction; resources are tapped relentlessly, water is polluted and the globe is dangerously heated.

Man will reap the whirlwind for what he sows.

After the 2004 tsunami we on this island were told that living near the shoreline was not wise. Now we learn that living above a certain elevation can be injurious to your well-being as well. Thus restricted, the twenty something million humans in Sri Lanka must make their homes in the balance part of the land. What a relief that we have toy homes in the form of condominiums now!

Travelling on our congested roads, in an uncomfortable bus, you might begin to think that Sri Lanka is a large country. It takes so many hours to get from one point to another! But unlike light years, we should not measure distances on our island based on time. Sri Lanka is small; in fact, the size of a few large Australian farms added together; then that is   a truly large country.

Not only the size of their land, in many other ways too there are noticeable differences between various peoples. Obvious differences in their physical features apart, people’s attitudes, habits, customs, beliefs and values vary considerably. So goes their social, economic and even intellectual performance. Clearly, certain nations will get the trophy for attaining Developed country status; for their capacities for establishing large and complex economic processes and most importantly, the high living standards they have provided for their citizens.

Having deep pockets, resources and capabilities, the Developed countries cope with the occasional natural disaster much better than other countries. What is only a temporary inconvenience to a rich and powerful nation becomes a crippling blow to a poor nation.

The baffling question is why some nations remain poor and weak, while others march ahead. If it is the size, limited resources or the hot climate, there are several countries which have overcome these disadvantages, Singapore being a striking example.

In the case of Sri Lanka, we had an early start, having gained independence more than seventy years ago. Many of Asia’s shining stars became self-governing only decades later. Relative to the Asian dynamos, lack of distinction is what stands out in our performance this lengthy period. We are a slow-growing economy; in terms of Gross Domestic Product or Per Capita Income we are among the underachievers. There are no great expectations among the young today, especially the more cosmopolitan; before the Western embassies they line up in their thousands looking for a better life.

Why a nation performs in a particular way is a complex matter. The answer would necessarily be an amalgam; history, culture, outlook, attitudes, values, skill and energy levels of that people; even their language could play a role. Egypt of ancient was formidable, Egypt now is a different story. Performing to the requirements of the modern world is another celestial sphere altogether, the methods and mind-set of the high priests of a Pharo will not deliver in the 21st Century.

A nation like ours could find the findings of an objective performance appraisal, unflattering.

We like to consider ourselves an agricultural country, claiming a history going back centuries. Both Israel and Netherlands are substantially smaller than Sri Lanka in size. Yet, they are agricultural powerhouses, huge exporters of fruits and vegetables. In our cultivations, tea, rubber, even rice, the per acre yield is below global standards. In industrial products it is only the most basic things we manufacture, value adding is minimal. Where human hands must intervene, our weaknesses show.

Trapped in an endless karmic web, the average Sri Lankan can do little about his human condition. It is to the political leaders, the high bureaucrats and the business community that a nation looks for leadership.

Here, we look in vain!

Politicians

If an alternate history were to be imagined, we cannot resist the hypothesis that had men of a different timbre held our leadership roles since independence, it would have made all the difference to the country.

Sri Lankans have been electing their representatives even from before independence. The vote could be the only common factor between advanced democracies and us. Despite this evident freedom to choose the leaders through the ballot, a few families, perhaps four, have dominated the country’s power structure in the preceding seventy years: the Senanayake, Bandaranaike, Jayewardene and Rajapaksa. In addition to these families, many electorates also have a history of family dominance, perhaps families of a lesser order. Reducing the base even further, nearly all of them are from one or two Colombo schools, declared by the locals to be elite.

It is not as if Sri Lanka is a success story or a great achiever. In truth it is the opposite, a mediocrity and a slowcoach. Either the nation is woefully deficit in leadership skills, or, by some miraculous process all leadership DNA has been gifted to these handful of families and the old boys of these schools. Karma works in mysterious ways!

The world sees the joke but is too polite to call it!

Of course, the blatancy of family dominance is obscured by the crisis of the moment, if there is none, one could be created. A time of crisis is not the moment to conduct analysis of the prevailing power structure. These families realize the game is fixed in their favour, so resort to guises and ruses to obscure the truth. The basic method of dominance is by having a stranglehold on the party leadership, in Sri Lanka, in all but name, a limited liability company of the leading family. In a two-party system, sooner or later, the pendulum will swing their way. When it does, the leader of the winning party is declared a mastermind in the political game.

Invariably, the common narrative is made use of to elevate the founding family member to near celestial heights, liberator, visionary, patriot or even genius. The pathetic state of the country is not explained.  A people of doubtful maturity are further confused and confounded.

Periodically, various family members alight on the stage with a new slogan, righteousness, vision, corruption fighter, modernizer and liberator.  All surveys point to a country abysmally deficient in these virtues, a laggard among the Asian success stories, yet the next family member will come up with another catchy slogan.

After the recent cyclone and the ensuing flooding an idea was mooted by interested parties that old politicians with “experience”, although completely rejected by the voter, must be brought in to handle the crisis. Repeatedly rejected by the voter, they continue to cast around for an opportunity to jump on the national stage. No example was given of their virtuoso handling of a disaster in the past. As we understand Sri Lanka has been hit by every conceivable calamity, natural as well as man-made.  There was no masterful avoidance of any disaster or a sterling rehabilitation after the event. The country performed as it always has, ineptly. Every disaster left us waiting abjectly for aid and sympathy from the world. Obtaining a foreign loan became an achievement, a matter of pride.

The family based political power structure is an anachronism. In the early years our voters had no idea of the inherent corruption of the system. Imagining their leaders to be well meaning and capable, they participated in the electoral process with gusto. However, their lives today are not as insular as before; many Sri Lankans now have travelled overseas, there is the television bringing the world to their sitting rooms, there is the internet, they can compare as well as contrast; their eyes have opened, their expectations have widened.

In recent years reality has bitten hard, people’s illusions have turned to disillusionment. The one desperate demand at the watershed ‘aragalaya’ was ‘system change’.

Bureaucracy

Seventy years is sufficient time for us to appraise the performance capabilities of the bureaucracy the nation has brought forth, their inherent attitudes and skills when placed as administrators. The administrative structure is now manned entirely by products of our post -independence education system (many of the higher bureaucrats proudly boast of further education and training overseas on account of the taxpayers of those countries) In the feudal era, high office devolved based on birth and caste; there was no proper yardstick to measure their competence. Their officiousness, corruption or tardiness mattered not; only the King’s goodwill mattered. As a result, they oppressed the people and toadied the king.

Modern times we live in a very competitive world; how well we educate our children, how our health services perform, how good our infrastructure is, how productive our industries are, how honest our systems are; these measurable factors are compared with other countries, development happens based on our relative performance. We can lull ourselves with a faulty assessment of our capabilities, ignore the evident limitations of the personnel, and even deny glaring realities.

Nevertheless, the truth is in our face, a mediocre country lurching from crisis to crisis.

Almost everything about us, the policies, structures, institutions and even the laws can ultimately be traced back to the political establishment and the high bureaucracy. It is they who conceived of and adopted them. Any institution is defined by its workforce, the individual personalities manning it. Without exception every public institution in Sri Lanka has been abused as well as diminished, standing presently   only as a masquerade of what they were meant to be.

There are similar institutions in Singapore. They work very differently. The personnel matter, they could make an institution great or diminish it.

When there is a natural disaster we run around like headless chickens, crying and mourning, pleading for help

We do not realize the inevitability of the tragedies that hit us, for seventy years we have sowed the winds….

Wish you all a happy new year with a hope of that the violent brutal political, social and religious culture come to an end in the near future.
The responsibility now lies on the AKD/NPP government and the so called educated people to lead the people with the understanding of equality is the fundamental truth and there is no place for any other principle. The purpose of education to understand the need of equality and justice is based on the equality.

      There are several issues here.
Tsunamis aren’t very common. The last one was Krakatoa in 1883, which apparently caused few casualties, because our population at the time was very low, and the wave surge was only 1 m. But it is said that the sky was dark for a week.
On balance, it seems pointless to tell people to avoid the shoreline to guard against an event which may not happen in their lifetime.
Cyclones of the intensity of Ditwah are more common than tsunamis. But population increases force people to build houses in vulnerable places. Good locations will, unsurprisingly, cost more. I suspect many will prefer to take on the risk of flooding/landslides in return for low cost.

        OC,

To be honest, don’t you believe Ditwah isn’t as strong as Namal Baby’s and AKD’s brainwashing of the islanders?
        .
I do not believe that misleading the foolish and rigid with blatant falsehoods is any worse than Ditwah or the Tsunami. Furthermore, while those disasters cause physical and human losses, abusive politicians and their agendas damage the mentality of millions of naive individuals who have been dreaming of a better life in their lifetime. ANURATHWA, also known as AKD (patcha), has had a far worse impact on this island’s population than Ditwah did last month.

Will you now request Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya who is planning to reform the entire educational system (establishment?) to look for experts outside the island so that they could have a fresh look at the state of education and recommend a comprehensive reform.

One such person is Professor Sir Nishan Canagarajah.

Excerpt from High Commission of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom congratulatory message:

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom warmly congratulates Professor Sir Nishan Canagarajah, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, on being conferred a knighthood by His Majesty King Charles III in the New Year Honours 2026.

Lamenting about how the Ceylonese/Sri Lankan citizens have behaved since the Independence is not going to do any good.
The authors of the majority race find it difficult to put the BLAME on how they have treated the minority population.
They packed off lots of Up-Country Tamils who were hard working to India following the Srimavo-Sasthri pact. In order to win the elections they whipped up the racial hatred. The STATE itself assisted the killings and destruction of minorities Properties and businesses. Scared of the STATE Machinery the Tamil youths left the isle whereby other developed countries benefited.
First step to salvage the country is to put a stop the rulers going behind the CLERGIES and to stop clergies getting involved in politics. Monks & other religious dignitaries should not be allowed to get into the parliament.
Thuggish behaviour by the CLERGIES should NOT be tolerated.
When the above happens we can talk about on developing the Country.
AKD /NPP should have clear policies and plans to show that they can bring about the REAL SYSTEM/SYSTEMIC change that the Aragalakarayos wanted

You are right that if these “Thugs” take over the power the violent Buddhism will destroy this country. But if the AKD/NPP government will continue with the same violent Buddhism, where will it take this country again? The behaviour of the police clearly proves that NPP government to follow the same violent Buddhism. The AKDs visit to Daladha maligawa in the new year also proves that violent Buddhism is greater than Buddhism and they are avove the law.

Was Unawatuna one of the intense hotspots where violent Jeppos murdered innocent classmates and sent the flesh and bone to the owners of the dead, claiming it was pig meat? A good segment of Jaffna people are not actually Tamil by origin, they are Malayalees. That is why on DNA tests, Sri Lankan Tamils and estate (Indian Tamils) have a significantly different result.

Some in Tamil Nadu do mistake them for Malayalees and their dialect for Malayalam. I’ve observed such confusions recently from TN Tamils as many Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora personalities have now started to post videos on social media. I’m not sure why some TN Tamils think in such a way.

Very simple. If Sri Lankan Tamils are Dravidian as you claim, they should have the same DNA result as Indian Tamils. But this is not the case.

“A recent local study has shown that all Sri Lankan ethnicities, except Indian Tamils clustered closely with populations from the Indian Bhil tribe, Bangladesh, and Europe, reflecting their shared Indo-Aryan ancestry.”

Lester, the fool on the CT forum, should learn to respect the “facts”.

How Sri Lankan Tamils differ slightly

Sri Lankan Tamils show minor genetic differences, not major ones.

              Main reasons:

              Geographic separation

The Palk Strait reduced (but did not stop) movement between Sri Lanka and South India.

              Local mixing

              Some gene flow with:

              Sinhalese populations

              Earlier Sri Lankan inhabitants

              Founder effects

Smaller, more isolated communities over long periods can develop subtle genetic shifts.

👉 These differences are small, similar to differences between regions within Tamil Nadu.

This stupid argument is which came first, the egg or the chicken, and the daughter now stating the mother looks like her instead of stating I look like my mother. Malayalis are descended from ancient and medieval Tamils from the ancient Tamil Chera kingdom that existed until at least 12AD. Some Malayali communities, like the Nairs, the Syrian Christians and the Muslim Mapplilas, have mixed respectively with the Namboothiri Brahmins, the Syrian Christians, who fled to then Tamil Chera Nadu after the Islamic conquest of Syria and Jews who converted to Christianity, like the Kananiya sect amongst the Syrian Christians of Kerala, modern day Syrian Christians of Kerala or a mixture of ancient Tamil St. Thomas Christians, ancient Syrian Christians refugees who fled Islamic persecution and sections of ancient Jews domiciled in Kerala who converted to Christianity. The Muslims, with some Arab traders and settlers, but they are predominantly and overwhelmingly of ancient and Medieval Chera Tamil descent, especially their masses. So, calling a Tamil from anywhere a descendant of a Malayali is a joke, as the Eelam Tamil identity existed for over 2300 years, and the modern Malayali identity is just a few centuries old.

The modern Malayalam language is again a few centuries old, and it only came into proper existence from around 16TH century, and only became the language of the vast majority in Kerala after 1820, when the British banned the use of old Malayalam or Malabar Tamil, which was the language of the majority, even after modern Malayalam came into existence as it was largely confined to the Namboothiris and their half case Nair offspring. Modern Malayalam started to break off from the local middle Tamil western Chera Tamil dialect( old Malayalam or Malabar Tamil) from around 9AD, but was still considered a dialect of Tamil even until 14AD, a highly Sanskritised dialect, a mixture of ancient Tamil, Malayalam and Sanskrit called Mannipiralavalam. It was distancing itself from its Tamil mother but was still very close. It is only after 16AD that it came on its own as a separate language from Tamil, and from the 18Th century it developed a very rich, vibrant literature. Tamil has been spoken in Jaffna, the north east, the north west coast, for over 2300 years and has a very ancient history on the island and was there long before a language called Malayalam was born.

        • 2
          0

The Sri Lankan Tamil dialect is more archaic and is a mixture of the ancient western Chera Tamil dialect and the eastern Tamil dialects, which came with the Chola/Pandian invasions and some settlements that came later. The connection between the Eelam Tamils and the modern day Malayalis is far more ancient, when all these people shared a common ancient Tamil identity and not recent, most of the native Sri Lankan Tamils are descended from the indigenous Dravidian Naga and most people of Kerala are also of Naga origin, The Nairs of Kerala are of Naga descent and this is the reason ancient Kerala was called Chera Nadu and the island was called Cheran Theevu in Tamil, as Cheran is another word for Naga and you can see lots of common culture amongst the Jaffna Tamils and Nairs of Kerala, like the worshipping of cobra or snakes, the food habbits the matriarchical system, and many words that are still used from old and middle Tamil, common in modern Malayalam and Eelam Tamil.

        • 2
          0

But it has gone out of usage in the Indian Tamil dialects. Sri Lankan Tamil is definitely Tamil, and not Malayalam. However, the intonation and the nasal way of singing common amongst many Eelam Tamils is very similar to Malayalam, as well as many of their food habits. Saying this if the Sri Lankan or Eelam Tamils have a connection to Kerala, ancient at times modern, what about the Sinhalese? Their connection to Tamil Nadu and even to ancient Kerala is far more significant, despite speaking an Indo Aryan language, as they are predominantly and overwhelmingly descended from ancient, medieval and modern Tamils, from what is modern-day Kerala and Tamil Nadu and over 50% of them are descended from 15Th century immigrants from these two southern Indian states.

        • 3
          0

See how close many modern-day Sinhalese are to the masses of Kerala. The Malayalam dialect of these Mukkuva fisherfolk is almost Tamil, a very archaic form of Tamil, but look at their looks and dress, just like Sinhalese, reminds one of Negombo, Matara, Galle, Hambantota, especially the Karawa. This is typical rural Kerala, the Kerala of its ancient Chera Tamil masses.

            Read carefully:

            G. Raghavan

“To think that Malayalis came from today’s Tamil Nadu is a perversion. They did not migrate from Tamil Nadu. The Malayalis stay where they were. The state of Kerala belongs them. They have a distinct culture and language, quite different from the Tamilians’.

In the 1940s and 1950s some narrow- minded Tamil scholars like Maraimalai Adigal and Devaneya Paavanar spread the myth that Malayalam originated from Tamil and the Malayalees were actually Tamilians. Why did they say so ? This is because they were aligned to the Dravidian movement which demanded a nationhood for Tamil people. When Nehru threatened them to put them behind the bars, they changed their rhetoric. They started saying that Tamil is the mother of all South Indian languages. In this way they wanted to assert the superiority of Tamil over other South Indian languages. These Tamil fanatics have no national spirit. Tamil and Tamil Nadu alone matter to them. They were habituated to denigrate everything other than Tamil. In this manner, they instilled a narrow-minded outlook among Tamilians. They would conveniently hide the fact that Tamil Nadu was ruled by Telugu and Maratha kings for four centuries.”

Ancient Chera Nadu, a major Tamil kingdom from the Sangam period (c. 3rd Century BCE–12th Century CE), encompassed parts of modern-day Kerala and western Tamil Nadu (like Karur, Coimbatore), ruling the lucrative Malabar Coast spice trade; while it was a Tamil kingdom, its distinct western region gradually developed into what is now Kerala, with its own language, Malayalam, evolving from Tamil and Sanskrit, and its people eventually forming the distinct Malayali identity seen today. The famous Tamil epic Chilapathikaram was written around 6CE by a Jain Tamil Chera monk, Illankovadikal, who was the brother of the Chera King, Illanko, meaning young king or prince in Tamil. The Chera kings and the Chera kingdom were staunch and ardent supporters of Tamil

The Cheras were one of the three crowned Tamil dynasties (along with Cholas and Pandyas) ruling ancient Tamilakam (the Tamil country)in India
Geography: Their kingdom included the fertile western coast (Malabar) and inland areas, now split between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Language: The Early Chera language was Old Tamil, but over centuries, the western dialect evolved into modern Malayalam, influenced by Sanskrit, leading to the distinct Malayali identity. It started to break away from Middle Tamil from 9AD, but only became a distinct language with its own identity from 16AD. Until 13-14 AD, it was still considered a dialect of Tamil. By the early 19Th century, it became the language of the majority. The first eastern or Indian language to be published by modern print was published in Tamil in 1578 in Quilon, Kerala, and it is Doctrina Christiani or Thambiran Vannakam in Tamil. Even the Malabar English dictionary published in 1779 and 1786 by Fabricius is a Tamil-English dictionary and not in modern Malayalam, as Tamil was still largely the language of Kerala.

Identity: While culturally connected, the Chera lands diverged; Kerala’s unique culture, influenced by its geography and later linguistic changes, developed separately from mainland Tamil culture.
Modern States: Kerala was essentially Chera Nadu until around the 14th century, with later kingdoms like the Cochin Rajas being Chera descendants; the modern state of Kerala was formed much later (1956) based on language. They did not fall from heaven; they originated from the ancient and medieval Chera Nadu Tamils, with some communities like the Nairs, the ancient Chera Tamil St. Thomas Christians or modern-day Syrian Christians and the Muslim Malyali Mappilas( from the Tamil word Mapplai, meaning son-in-law) have got mixed with later immigrants like the Namboothirs Brahmins, Christian refugees from ancient Syria or Aram, and local Jews who converted to Christianity and Arab traders or immigrants but this mixture is minor their masses are essentially Dravidian Tamils and so are these mixed communities.

You can see a typical traditional Muslim Mapila wedding; their traditional wedding dances are still heavily influenced by Hindu culture. In essence, modern Kerala is the direct descendant of the western part of the ancient Tamil Chera kingdom. The eastern parts of the Chera kingdom, such as Kanniya Kumari, Nagar Kovil, and Coimbatore, where the Tamil language was preserved, became part of modern Tamil Nadu. preserving many Chera traditions but now possessing its own distinct language and cultural identity. You can see the Muslim Mappila women wearing their traditional dress. The whits cloth jacket, like all women in Kerala, but with the head dress.

Here are some links. It is after the decline of the once powerful Tamil Cheras around 15 century AD due to infighting amongst the Tamil kings ( the Cholas, Pandians and Cheras) and the immigration of Namboothiri Brahmins from the north vial Tulu Nadu to modern day Kerala, a new language and identity gradually started to form in the western part of ancient Tamil Chera kingdom, modern day Kerala, that was seperated by a mountain range. The Namboothiris used the decline of the Tamil Chera kings to their advantage, to gain economic and political advantage for themselves and make them the top dogs of modern day Kerala, using the Nairs as a tool by a so called abominal sexual union called Sambantham, which lasted until the 1950s, where the Nair and other related caste women were used as sexual tools by the younger Namboothiri sons to produces thousands of half caste bastards, who did their bidding, From outside immigrants they became the top dogs within a few centureis, with their cunning and sly ways.

In the eastern Tamil country of the decline of the Cholas and Pandians, outsiders like the Telugu Naickers and some Maratha rulers started to rule from around the 14Th to 15TH century, but the only difference is that they failed to create a new language or identity like in the western Tamil country, but gradually got Tamilised and became Tamils themselves. Like the Naickers of Madurai who ruled Kandy

Your argument is that anyone (or group) who speaks a Tamil related language must be descended from Tamils. This argument (false equivalence) is flawed on many levels.

People of Sri Lanka brought grief upon themselves. For seventy years, they lived on Sinhala Only. They took the teachings of Gautama Buddha and made it the basis for hatred and oppression. They drove away many Tamils from the country who are now contributing to the progress of other states Nishan Canagarajah recently knighted is one example. Arulkumaran, earlier knighted, is another. Still, the spectre of communalism hangs over us. The prospect of it being ignited is ever present with the lands of the Tamils being appropriated for the building of more Buddhist temples. We will stagger along with our benighted Sinhala friends in a perpetual state of moral decay. There was hope when the NPP and JVP won but they do not seem to be any different.

Ravi Perera: Thank you. You have referred to the ‘Tsunami’ in 2004 and said: ” After the 2004 tsunami, living near the shoreline was not wise. Now we learn that living above a certain elevation…….not good for well-being.

Absolutely. But have we learned anything, or have our ‘Politicians’ and the ‘Bureaucrats’ made us learn and change our attitudes, customs, beliefs, and values? Absolutely not. Take a walk on the shoreline from Galle Face Green down South. How many ‘Unauthorized.’ eating houses and pubs have been built despite the laid-down rule that no structures must be permitted within a radius of ‘100 meters? Who are the owners of these illegally built hotels and pubs? Some belong to very ‘Prominent Elites’ and ‘Business Tycoons’ who finance political parties. Come down South, say shoreline running all the way passing Hambantota. Do all those structures comply with the rules? Who authorized and patronized those structures, and to whom do those belong? Have we learned or made us to learn the hazards and adhere to the rules? No.
I hope this will not be repeated after ‘Ditwah’. The present Government has pledged that it will take strict measures to prevent such social patterns and behaviour. Hopefully, the people will change their attitudes, customs, beliefs, and values to attain a meaningful and comfortable living.

and values to attain a more meaningful and comfortable living.

As a famous person pointed out, few people are good at reasoning backwards . But that is exactly what helps to clarify the solution. If Sri Lanka had no minorities, if there had been no colonialism, what would the island resemble today? Now you can argue that these things happened anyway, and cannot be undone (or can only partially be undone), which is also a valid argument. What happened is that Tamils played a zero-sum game and lost. From this POV, there is no surprise.

Namal makes every attempt to overtake Sajith and claim any tom and jerry on his side. There is a massive campaign going on right now, and SJB and UNP are planning to reunite.

Nobody could have been elected president by parliament without the clan’s backing.
Ranil badly wanted to become President and he grabbed the opportunity when it came.

Is that OK ? The decent thing to do was to have held a election immediately without hogging that office and going to London so many times including when the wife gets a honorary degree !

                    Deepthi aka The Truth,

Let us stick to the facts. Was there really a bond swindle perpetrated by RW?
Or was that a retaliatory deed by SIRASA TV Maharja on the UNP and Mr Wickramasinghe?
Furthermore, analysts indicated that Mara and his WANDIBATTTAAYA Cabral architected the bond-related scandel as early as 2008.
SRILANKENS, in general, do not care about facts, but have been brainwashed to believe anything thanks to the “Sadu Sadu effect”. That is in their genes and blood.
                    .
RW has never been detected by corruption scanners. MaRa and his siblings were world champions at this, and he spread tales about RW because he was then known as “Mr Clean”. With anyone’s opinions aside, we should at least be honest and recognize facts as facts. Mr Wickramsasginhe is said to have donated his own salary to charities for the past five decades, and he and his adored wife (who I know in person) have worked to help over 40 houses around the country. She is recognized as the most innocent first lady or Prime Minister’s wife, and she has never exploited any of the privileges bestowed upon her. However, in a country comparable to the “WANATHAMULLA garbage dumps” composition, all types of criminals are intertwined.

                    The research is very interesting.

While there’s no simple “yes,” research suggests tropical regions face unique mental health challenges, with high heat increasing risks for conditions like depression and anxiety, and tropical diseases causing direct brain issues, though some data also points to higher rates near the poles, highlighting complex interactions between climate, disease, and socioeconomic factors.
Why tropical climates can affect mental health:

Extreme Heat & Climate Events: Higher temperatures are linked to increased hospital visits for mental health issues, mood disorders, anxiety, and even suicide, with tropical zones showing particular vulnerability.

For example, when “LankaScot” first came to CT, he was perfectly normal. But the cognitive decline, combined with alcoholism, is obvious. The others, such as the one in Germany (originally Wanni) and Old Pervert, are lifelong degenerates. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but this is the norm. An engineering professor once told us that cold weather has contributed to the success of Nordic peoples, while tropical weather makes people lazy. I once read a book about Native’s cousins in Africa. Why work at all? Eat fruit from the tree, sleep all day, and enjoy the quibbles of the wives.

According to South Asian customs and mythological and mystical beliefs, being persistently racial, self-centered, and self-proclaimed about one’s own education—even if one hasn’t ended up becoming a professor like Lester has—can even result in anyone losing a body part meeting with Karmic retributions. For instance, Lester was made to have an orchiectomy, sometimes known as an orchidectomy, which is a medical operation that involves the removal of one or both testicles.
There are several reasons why the operation could be done.
He is calling me a Tamil for no apparent reason and disparaging our Sri Lankan Tamil people because they are from Wanni. My foot, the type of men who brag about their scientific endeavors!

                    Pigs might fly!

To break Deepthi’s or other harmful men, women, or eunachs’ mindsets, we need to bring forth a true social revolution. For doctoral theses based on Lanken’s typical attitude (similar to Deepthi’s) and how they may be changed for the better, we need to find some students in Colombo/South Asia (MSc students in psychology/sociology looking for doctoral theses to complete). Experts feel that colonialism spawned these kind of pseudo-intellectuals, and we’ve been arguing this topic while keeping Deepthi’s gaslighting methods in mind.

Ironically, SIRASA whores are now backing Thambuththegama pachoris. Why? Truth be told, there is no future without the return of former President RW: Take my word! Premier Dr. Amarasooriya had spilled the ASUCHI can on her, preventing her from moving forward easily.

    Naman

You’ve hit the nail on the head.

Since independence, this country has been ruled by mediocrities who deliberately exploited race, religion, and language to divide the people and cling to power. The present JVP/NPP government is no exception. Its history is steeped in the same cynical manipulation of identity politics. They are not Marxists; they are chauvinists masquerading as revolutionaries—hiding their true face behind red shirts and portraits of Marx, Lenin, and Engels.

What Sri Lanka needs above all is a secular state, where every citizen is equal in law and in practice. Granting a “foremost place” to Buddhism directly violates the principles of the rule of law and equality before the law. It is an affront to genuine democracy, no matter how it is justified.

Look at Canada. English and French speakers form the majority, and both languages are recognized officially. Yet there is no systemic discrimination in employment, education, or healthcare. It is an inclusive society where merit matters. If you are honest and hardworking, opportunities are real. Three of my grandchildren are currently in medical school and will soon qualify as doctors. Could such a future have been realistically possible for Tamil children in Ceylon?

        Hello Nimal,
Latest news is that the US (Trump) has detained (illegally) Madura and his wife. Is Ayatollah Khamenei next? Followed by Macron, Carney, Mette Frederiksen and Tamim Al Thani?

Latest news in the North of Sri Lanka is that NPP sent its Sinhala police to protect a Buddhist Temple built illegally in peoples land without the permission of the local government by Military Commander Chavendra de Silva and his military who supported the past regime (war criminal) along with a Monk who was promoted by NPP government for his braveness to illegally build that Buddhist temple during Corona period under the same old governments which robbed the country. Do you think violent Buddhism to be above the law?

                Hello, LS.
Have you been to Venezeula before? I haven’t visited any of the nations in LA, but in recent years, we’ve seen an increase in the number of Latino medical graduates (Honduara and Colombia), researchers, and nurses from the continent. They learn German rapidly and get positions in German hospitals.
What do you think of the US invasion and the EU nations’ deafening silence on the breach of international law and order?

I believe they have been targeting Venezuela for quite some time, and they are now equating Maduro’s politics and reactions to those of Pakistan’s Bin Laden. According to several news reports, the CIA has been working on this for quite some time.

                  Hello Leelgemalli,
I have never been to Venezuela, however in a way it (along with David Attenborough) gave me an interest in Zoology and Paleontology. My Father’s friend worked in Venezuela (Oil Industry late 1950s) for a few years and brought back an Armadillo Shell which he gave to me. I thought it was a small Dinosaur Fossil, but soon found out what it really was.
Trump wants to re-enact the Monroe Doctrine and establish US Hegemony in the Region. It also helps divert attention from the Epstein Files. It may also give him the opportunity to declare a State of Emergency and bring in some Draconian Laws that he wants, so that he can continue as President for longer than the Constitution allows. Personally I think he has mentally and physically declined more than Biden and might not be able to continue. His Father died of Altzheimers, however he still lived to 93.

LS, I believe affluent nations are like “wearing a sarong but standing on their heads- fully naked.” Whatever injustice they have inflicted on other nations, they hold together.
Consider today’s EU and American attitudes regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, as well as the Venesula.

Destructive internal politics caused hyperinflation not just in Venezuela but also in Sri Lanka by July 2022. It was read at more than 70%. It is believed that Venezula was a wealthy country ten years ago; however, internal political crises similar to those in Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh, as well as political turmoil, have destroyed each of the countries and caused each to hang on the last straw, as SRILANKENs did on September 21, 2024. Sri Lanka plainly modified the cushion to relieve its headache. Elected leaders are not mature enough to manage or maintain external relations balanced; as a result, SL, for example, has been stalled by eveymeans since the former President and his little cabinet were overthrown, despite the fact that inflation was cut to zero levels during his leadership.

                cont.
We, the Sri Lankans, as a very vulnerable nation, should learn a valuable lesson at least today, because we should not allow external forces to interfere with our sovereignty-related concerns. This can only be accomplished by uniting the nation – under AKD, this would not be possible; he is more divided among Sinhalayas, Muslims, and Tamils than excellent leaders who behave prudently in public. Either he should be instructed by the clergy to behave correctly, or he should be replaced as quickly as possible by a competent leader.

                    Ajith, remain cool.
Can you govern Hindu priests in the North-East of Sri Lanka, or do Indians do so in that country?
South Asia has far more religious and cultural influences than any other region.
The majority of lanken people would not ask “why” and would instead get bashful. That might be in their DNA. You can’t blame everything on lanken safronists for Sri Lanka’s situation. It is just incorrect. Consider how individuals who rushed to elect Gotabaya joined forces to support a man whose profile showed that he had achieved nothing in his life other than public lying and hate mongering against other politicians, with no regard for reality. So far, AKD has been elected by really ignorant folks.

Not only religion, but also a variety of other factors, have hampered Sri Lanka’s ability to progress as a tiny nation. Their psyches need be completely altered for a healthy and constructive nature, especially if our economy is to develop dramatically. If war-torn Vietnam can swiftly grow its economy, why can’t a little nation that makes up less than a quarter of Vietnam fight so hard to even come close to achieving its economic goals? It lingers like Tantalus’ torments for an extended length of time.

                  Hello Leelagemalli,
Neither the US nor the UK are (in my reasoning) affluent Countries. I consider that the extremely uneven distribution of wealth in both Countries negates their claims to affluence.
Apart from that there is a growing slide towards Authoritarianism in both these Countries. The Technocrats want a Corporate style Government with a “Strong Man” leadership. Read a little about Mussolini – “Mussolini’s corporatism was a fascist economic model merging state and corporate power”. Project 2025 could have been written by Giovanni Gentile who wrote much of Mussolini’s “The Doctrine of Fascism”. To give a quote “Fascism is therefore opposed to that form of democracy which equates a nation to the majority, lowering it to the level of the largest number; but it is the purest form of democracy if the nation be considered as it should be from the point of view of quality rather than quantity”.
The Modern equivalent is espoused by the Tech Oligarchs like Peter Thiel.
Have a look at what Trump has implemented so far – https://www.politico.com/interactives/2025/trump-executive-orders-project-2025/
The old “Rules Based Order” is being dismantled. The UN is impotent and bypassed constantly by the US (and others). Orwell’s 1984 is close.

We used to have a saying in the UK “When the US sneezes the UK (or the World) catches a Cold”. Many countries are very aware of the power that the USA has. With a mentally impaired narcissist at the helm, who knows what will happen. The latest US poll on Venezuela showed 70% against intervention.. He now threatens Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and even Greenland.

Thanga and the rest of the expats are trying to paint a rosy picture for ignorant Lankans ……. who have not experienced the outside world much.

Specialists can find work in Canada …… but how selections are made for plum positions.

Now they are calling him to the University I said do not go”

“…why an “interview” was brought in to enter Medical School ……… and not for the other faculties…”
Nimal, interviews are an essential part of the medical school admissions process because to be a professional who is “directly meddling with human bodies and minds” must need to hold a unique blend of academic intelligence with specific non-academic personal qualities aka soft skills as well, such as compassion, tolerance, empathy, communication, and ethical judgment. Those are characteristics not possible to assess through ABCD grades or standardized tests alone. Not only medical faculties but there are mandatory interviews in Arts faculty too, when they train social workers, psychologists ets., who deal with human minds directly rather than an engineer designing a bridge. Of course, my opinion is that there should be more interviews to filter craps when they train other professionals too, such as lawyers, civil servants etc., but at least we have the process in place for doctors. This practice is only maintained in the western schools of medicine, and we don’t have the system in SL and that may be the reason why we a fair number of s-bags in the profession. Now you will ask me why they all are not angels in the western medical field and all I can say is, sometimes it is hard to suppress human ‘qualities’ 😉

            • 10
              0

              Jit,

The reasoning for the “interview” was …….. if selection criteria was based solely on marks/grades …….. the medical professionals (doctors) would be mainly Asians (Indian-subcontinent, Chinese, …… ) who will be treating a mainly White population.

I understand the reasoning/logic …… but also know how it is abused.

100% would say in an “interview” they are taking up Medicine to serve the people …….. I can count on the fingers of just one hand, the number I know, who have taken up Medicine for reasons other than for money or prestige.

Is it possible to devise a method of selection based on the reality of a situation …….. leaving out all the rest of the crap?

I’ll leave the rest for people to work out for themselves. …… I can’t! :)))

If I may allow to add some facts to the NHS-related discussion, this has a lot to do with the proportion of migratory communities in the UK. In Germany, Turkish people dominate various sectors, including politics. I’ve noticed that the United Kingdom has a large proportion of Indians in higher-level positions in hospitals. I’ve been interacting with some Indian academics and lead physicians in the UK, the majority of whom are migrants from India. My relatives, who have lived in LONDON for over six decades, have told me that the majority of Indians went to the UK in the late 1960s as guest workers, and their second generations are significantly better off today, having become professors, prominent medical physicians, engineers, and other professionals.

            LM,
Indians have a much longer history in UK than even the Turks in Germany. As theoretically British Empire citizens pre-independence, many who could afford the travel moved freely.
Historically, Dadabhai Naoroji was the first Indian MP in the UK Parliament in 1892,
Krishna Menon was a Labour Councillor in London for 14 years.

              .
              Direct comparison

Indians in the UK: continuous presence for 300–400 years

Turks in Germany: large-scale presence for about 60 years
              Turks in Germany

Significant Turkish presence in Germany is much more recent.

It mainly began in the 1960s, when West Germany invited Turkish “Gastarbeiter” (guest workers) to help rebuild the economy.

Before this, there was very little permanent Turkish settlement in Germany.

            Hello Leelagemalli,
I worked with 3rd Generation Indians (and Pakistanis) in the UK IT Industry. Some were Network Engineers, some System Architects and some Server Engineers, but all were very clever and hard working. We were all at least SC Cleared and some higher, so none of them had any Criminal Records and were considered as suitable to handle sensitive Documents etc. In other words they were trusted highly as British Citizens. They considered themselves as British as me (some joked that they were more so).
Their Parents and Grandparents had worked hard and earned enough money to educate their Children and inculcate the importance of that Education, which was passed down the generations.

              LS,
Thank you. I believe it is in the DNA of South Asian parents and grandparents to force their second generations to obtain a solid education. Thanks to my late mother, I was pushed to pursue more education. Even if my start in Europe was difficult as a private student, I was not fooled by anything, even if we were forced to share hostels at times.
Unfortunately, this is not the case for certain other migrants residing in Germany: the density of graduates in various disciplines from migrant communities in the UK is significantly greater than in Germany and France with their migrant populations. I believe it might also be the language challenges and other social and political barriers that immigrants face in Germany and France.
              Here below is the comparision:
              UK:

Indian-origin students: very high university participation (often above national average)

Some African-origin groups also perform strongly

              Germany:

Turkish-origin population: significantly below national average in university attainment

              France:

North African-origin groups: underrepresented in higher education, especially elite institutions

I went to a Chinese restaurant with an Indian guy once. He did not know the fortune cookie had a paper inside. He nearly swallowed the paper. You don’t have to have extensive technical knowledge to defeat a security system, social engineering will often suffice. .

“I went to a Chinese restaurant with an Indian guy once. He did not know the fortune cookie had a paper inside.”

Even if he didn’t know about fortune cookies, his expertise of software development would have been world-class. That is how I learned about my employment at Norvatis eleven years ago in Basel, Switzerland. Most of them are caught up in the laughing of your natural dumb males, but most of them have received their degrees and do not brag about their academic abilities, but they prove themselves when given the opportunity.

Besides, this is nothing compared to what our Sri Lankan counterparts in Bonn and Paris may have done upon joining srilanken embassies in Europe.
Unlike in the home country, can meals for dogs/cats are labeled with a dog/cat image, and some cans include fish or meat. Some Sri Lankan officers had ingested these at European Sri Lankan embassies. These stories, as I learned from my Bonn friends, were real.
And I didn’t laugh at them, but rather explained that in Europe, cat and dog food is packaged in cans. Sri Lankans are more aware of it now than they were some 20 years ago.

Why do people hiding behind filters on a website which they claim is not popular, commenting on stuff they can’t see?
Do they feel left out, ignored? Surely, if they are as rich as they claim, they could hire someone to scratch their whatsits?

“ The baffling question is why some nations remain poor and weak, while others march ahead.”
Why SL remains a poor and weak one in this world could be solely ATTRIBUTED to ETHNIC and RELIGIOUS disharmony.
As long as the mind set of rulers and its subjects have a SINHALA SUPREMACY, SL is not going anywhere. A thorough SHAKE UP of the Education in SL has to happen.
Ethnic and religious based schools should be disbanded/dissolved asap.

SSC grounds are being developed some more and at the same time Oval cricket grounds are being neglected over the last several decades. It was the cricket grounds that had seen Garfield Sobers and Don Bradman playing cricket.
Was it purposefully neglected because it was called Tamil Union.

As if Sri Lanka is a big nation with many more regions where its people may live. How can Sri Lanka be compared to India or any other country that has implemented a federal or similar form of governance? If they can’t function efficiently under provincial councils now, how can they rule after they become federal states? As someone who does not oppose federalism, I do not mind if everything is settled for Tamils once it is done, but I do not believe that federalism will bring success to N/E since their own progress toward equality within their own race is beyond remedy for the next several decades.

Naman, with all due respect to you and our Tamil community, I do not believe the failure is solely the fault of the majority Sinhalese.

Hinduistic views have caused your and our sinhala-buddhist (not true Buddhist) to stagnate. Most Sinhala Buddhists are completely controlled by JATHAKA tales rather than the noble values of real Buddhism.
As far as I know, the south is no more segregated by caste than it was four decades ago. In my younger days, up until the late 1980s in my home country, I despised seeing our parents treat the laundrymen and cinnamon peelers with contempt. However, their sons and daughters may now be seen working as physicians in local hospitals, engineers at regional offices and colleges, and other professionals around the island.
I now think that the differences within the TAMIL community were caused by more the rigid caste and creed system, not by us, the Sinhalese. I got to know some Tamil brethren in Europe, and the majority of them are more divided than Sinhalese. Arun Siddartha, who is trilingual, has exposed a lot about how upper caste Tamils have kept lower caste Tamils beneath them for decades and even today. That, according to him, is a major impediment to N/E improvement. Of course, there are language and other difficulties present. Colombo Tamils, too, are unconcerned with the plight of poor Tamils in the North East.

You again. The LTTE supporter. I remember rebutting you many times in the past.
You say, “Since independence, this country has been ruled by mediocrities who deliberately exploited race, religion, and language to divide the people and cling to power.”
Well, well, well, you are accusing your own leaders, aren’t you? Let me tell the truth, you Tamils have been concealing from the world.
    1.. Since Independence in 1948, Sri Lanka has been ruled by ONLY ONE Sinhalese Buddhist President (late President D.B. Wijetunga 1.5 years) while all the other rulers were;
    a) Malabar Christians and Sinhalese Christians who converted to Buddhism to gain political power,
    b) Malabar Muslims, Malabar Christians and Malabar Hindus who never converted to Buddhism but posed as Buddhists for political power, and,
    c) Atheists and a Jain who posed as Buddhists whenever it was convenient.
    1/3

  • 4
    3

2.. In total, there have been 7 Malabar origin Prime Ministers and Presidents who ruled Sri Lanka for 48.6 years. (Three Bandaranaikes 26 years + Jayewardene 11 years + Rajapakses 11.6 years + current PM Amarasuriya 1 year who was implanted to succeed President AKD when he is ousted this year. )
    3. Sinhalese Christian Prime Ministers and a President ruled the country for 16.1 years. (Senanayakes 11 years + Kotelawala 3 years + Ranil Wickremasinghe 2.1 years.)
4.One Jain and two Atheist Presidents ruled the country for 10.1 years. (Premadasa 4.3 years + Sirisena 4.8 years + Dissanayake 1.1 years.)
    5. As obvious, it is the non-Buddhist leaders who are responsible for politically motivated ethnic riots and the spread of terrorism in Sri Lanka.
    6. If the country was ruled by the Sinhalese Buddhists, “Sinhaladvipa” will never be renamed as an unknown “Sri Lanka”, a name that buried the country’s Sinhalese Buddhist history as done in the dominion Ceylon’s first Constitution establìshed in 1972. Apparently, Dr. Colvin R. de Silva has opposed the name change.

    7. The Cultural genocide against the Sinhalese Buddhists which was started by the European settler colonists is continuing even to this date. These are the recent examples.
    i) In 2015, Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremasinghe attacked the country’s Sinhalese Buddhist foundation and tried to declare Sri Lanka a secular country and also attempted to legalize LGBTQ+ and same sex marriages.
ii) In 2020, Gotabhaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa conspired to remove the word “Sinhala” from Sri Lankan Birth Certificates but backed down due to strong backlash.
ii) in 2021, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Ali Sabry tried to make the English language compulsory for Law School examinations to deprive equal opportunities for the Sinhalese students who studied in the Sinhala medium.
iii) President AKD tried to establish a new “Sri Lanka Day” in December 2025 to undermine traditional Sinhalese Buddhist festivals. Anyway, his plan was thwarted by our Rain God (or, was it the US/Indian artificial Rain Gods?)
iv) In 2026, the Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya introduced “Mandatory Educational Reforms” which were funded and drafted by external forces and NGOs to erode the country’s traditional foundation and cultural values.

“The Cultural genocide against the Sinhalese Buddhists which was started by the European settler colonists is continuing even to this date.”
When you say Sinhalese Buddhists it can be interpreted there was another Buddhists were in this country. Can you clarify what is the difference between Sinhalese and Buddhists? I understand Buddhism came from India? Is it true? Did Sinhalese live before Buddhism? What was the religion of Sinhalese before Buddhism?
You talk about genocide against Sinhalese Buddhists after European settlers? But most of your Sinhalese leaders were very friendly with the European rulers. Why? If you think that all of your leaders after independence were Sinhalese how did they do the genocide of Sinhalese Buddhism? You mean that Sinhalese Buddhism practiced by DS to AKD are not real Sinhalese Buddhists?

      • 3
        2

        1. All Sinhalese were Buddhists before the arrival of the European settler colonists. Then, some Sinhalese converted to Christianity. Hence, the particularity.
        2. India does not have any archaeological, epigraphical, architectural, sculptural, documentary or speleological evidence to prove that Buddhism came to Sri Lanka from India whereas Sri Lanka has all the above-mentioned evidence and records of ancient pilgrims and travellers to prove that Buddhism originated in ancient Sri Lanka and spread to other countries.
        3. The architecture in India is called “Greco-Buddhist architecture” as they were constructed by Greek Buddhists.
        4. All Sri Lankan leaders since 1948 were non-Buddhists except only one. They brought anti-Buddhist and anti-Sinhalese laws, orchestrated violent ethnic riots and credited them to Sinhalese Buddhists to discredit Buddhism. Please read my comments 1/3, 2/3 and 3/3 for details.

    Thanga… more
Then, you say “Look at Canada. Three of my grandchildren are currently in medical school and will soon qualify as doctors. Could such a future have been realistically possible for Tamil children in Ceylon?”
    .
This is again factually incorrect and misleading. There is absolutely no discrimination against Tamils in education, employment or healthcare in Sri Lanka.
While congratulating your grandchildren for their success in the highly competitive medical field in Canada, I can prove that Tamils have similar opportunities in medical schools in Sri Lanka too.
Let me compare the two countries.
    1. Sri Lanka has 12 government-run, free medical schools (including one in Jaffna) where approximately 2,049 students have enrolled in 2024. Altogether, around 800-900 medical students graduate each year.
    2. Canada has provincially-run, 18 medical schools with high tuition fees where the 2024/2025 intake was approximately 11,958. Altogether, Canadian medical schools graduate 2,900 students per year.
    1/2

  • 2
    1

    Continuation…..

    3. The selection criteria for medical schools in both Sri Lanka and Canada is merit-based. However, Canadian medical schools give priority to applicants who are residents of the same province whereas Sri Lankan medical schools select applicants based on academic grades as well as on a district quota system in order to grant equal opportunities to all students.
    4. As for Tamils, there is one University in the Tamil-dominant Jaffna area where some programmes are entirely in Tamil. The annual enrollment of its medical college is 200, out of which, 60% are Tamils. This is very much higher than the percentage of the Tamil population in the country which is only 11%. Within its 48-year history, Jaffna medical college has graduated 4,000 medical students which debunk your accusation that Tamils face systematic discrimination in education, employment and healthcare in Sri Lanka.
