“In Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, an anti-Rajapaksa wave” – Meera Srinivasan, the Hindu

“When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn…?” – Where Have All the Flowers Gone

It may seem patronizing on my part, to suggest to the minorities how they should vote. It isn’t. I am a member of the minorities. I am also a member of the majority. As a (non-practicing) Catholic I am a member of one of Sri Lanka’s minorities. As a Sinhalese I am a member of the majority ethnic community.

The Christian community in Ceylon was heavily identified with the West and the UNP. It was a prominent, visible part of the pro-west, urban, anti-nationalist, pro-UNP social bloc (to use a Gramscian term). 1962 was the high point or rather the nadir of this trajectory and identity. The Christian churches and lay community paid for this in spades, three times over i.e. in 1956, 1960 and 1970. The Catholics paid for it more, because they had something more important to lose, which for the most part, they did—their schools.

It took Bishops Leo Nanayakkara and Lakshman Wickremesinghe, and scholar-priests like Monsignor WLA Don Peter, the Rector of my old school, St Joseph’s, to repair the damage, rectify the ‘line’ and bring the churches into the national mainstream. This was sealed by the Catholic vote for Sirimavo Bandaranaike and the center-left United Front in 1970.

The Tamils made exactly the same mistake of identification, most especially as a conspicuous component of Dudley Senanayake’s ‘Hath Havula’, and suffered a discourse and policy backlash in 1956, 1960 and 1970.

Today the minorities are poised to make the same mistake as in the post-independence decades.

Why oh why repeat a ghastly historical pattern? If the minorities all vote for one side, especially if that side is already seen as more pro-Western than the other, then that side is not only branded as minoritarian, but when the cycle turns, the inevitable backlash sets in, and the erstwhile opposition returns to office with a majoritarian ideology and agenda.

That’s what happened in 1956 and 1970. Most dramatic were the ultranationalist backlashes of the late ’80s and during the CBK–RW years. With the exception of CBK, it is almost always the UNP that appears minoritarian and pro-Western. Today the opposition is a bloc of the UNP of Ranil (the CFA UNP) and the SLFP of CBK (‘package’- PTOMS), and therefore the profile is clear. It is compounded by the anti-China, pro-West signaling from Opposition platforms and at Joint Opposition forums. Having a gentleman in a Modi vest as human shield or front office manager doesn’t alter the optics significantly.

Going by received wisdom, the incumbent is doomed at the Presidential election because of the arithmetic. The minorities which account for 25%-30% of the vote, depending on whether you count only the Tamils and Muslims or also the Sinhala Catholics/Christians, are counted as solidly against Mahinda Rajapaksa. Then there is the biggie, the UNP base vote, calculated at 35%-40%. The opposition strategists put these together and conclude that Mahinda Rajapaksa is already dead in the water. Add the SLFP vote that the rebel, Maithripala Sirisena will break off, and a defeat of the President is guaranteed, according to this calculation. I have also been walked through a far more detailed crunching of the numbers which points to a defeat for the incumbent.

It took a young Stanford graduate in philosophy, my wife Sanja’s nephew, to punch a hole below the waterline of the calculation at my celebratory dinner on my 58th birthday at rebel MP Vasantha Senanayake’s restaurant Ellen’s Place early last month. He pointed out that a significant percentage of the minority vote was already included in the UNP vote, and that there was a clear case of double counting in the calculation.

My own contribution to the discussion was more of a question than a conclusion. Does the arithmetic count quite as much at a Presidential election at which the country elects its leader, as it does at a parliamentary election? Don’t all these figures pertain far more to a parliamentary rather than a presidential election at which the collective psychological dynamics are significantly different? Wasn’t Leon Trotsky right when he drew a distinction between arithmetic and “the higher algebra” of politics—and doesn’t the latter prove more relevant than the former at a Presidential election while it is the other way around at a parliamentary one? Do the citizens actually vote primarily according to their party identities and affiliations at a presidential election?

We shall know the answer in 48 hours. As for me, I hope Mahinda Rajapaksa will win. I expect him to.

There is a big difference in “finding a hole” and “punching a hole”. You are hoping that MR will win when the the whole country is waiting for him to fall in 48hrs. So rightly you are trying to “punch” a hole below the waterline instead of finding one.

I hope we will not hear your foolish theories after the 8th. Your theory will only prove right if MR rigs and cheats as he did in 2005. As a learned man do you agree with his methodology of cheating. I haven’t come across one person on CT or Social Media who agrees with your views.

        Oh, [Edited out] DJ….

He is not a fool. He is playing a different kind of a tactics like the Lankan Juda’s of Catholics.

Many Catholics have had a second thought of backing the Rogue Mahinda even though they know that he is an anti-minority crack pot and also at a time the country most needed hour of change just because that he arranged the visit of the Pope.

Just because of POPE they are trying to COPE with Mahinda for his latest bloody ROPE laid as a trap for these untrustworthy few dashing our HOPE of a change.

Many months ago I challenged in a CT article of Mahinda reaching to a climax of this nature with a noose hanging over his head. There is something called the GOD Almighty phenomenon encompassing all the DJ’s tongue twisting, stomach churning garbage articles with fake pro-Mahinda plots and twists.

I wrote that like the Zionists met a deadlock in Putin’s Russia the heaven intervened and produced a situation where his own satanic astrology leading to his own destruction.

Astrology is part of a Jewish Kabbala Satanism which is practiced by the Zionist West and all those who affiliated to its ideology. Even the Pope is a Kabbala priest dsiguised as a representative god of the Christians on earth in the absence of the Sun God or most famously twisted Son of god, Jesus. The Babylonian, and Mesopotamian god of the Pharoahs and Nimrods are the Sun god RA….

So, DJ and the few or most Catholics have to take on the Zionist plot in destabilising any nation that yearning for a self sufficiency. NO…Zionist IMF/WOrld Bank and the Zionist UN will not allow any country to live peacefully. Wars are declared on false premises and the rest of their tricks and traps is explained in the following videos.

DJ is a Western product, and a Zionist messenger designed to rope a dumb ass like Mahinda and trap them in western designs in collaborating with Israel (He is a Pro-Israel nut) and then go crazy with Power and plunging the economy and then borrowing money from the Zionist mouse traps of IMF/World Bank loans and even introducing models like Las Vegas Casinos, Prostitution….etc,etc.

Everything that needs for a country and a society to go corrupt and then bankrupt, is supplied and aided to attain it and they will promote such govt., which is under their evil spell to do all undemocratic and uncivilized acts on its citizens. WAR is a major business venture of the Zionist masters. They will supply weapons and technical assistance to all the parties involved in such wars, to the protagonists and to the antagonists as well. So, their goals of de-population projects and divide and rule concepts are achieved in one go.

Dayan played well and still plays well for his hidden Zionist masters. Dayan is a secret agent of the Zionist Rothschild plans of divide and rule.

You are dead right alone when looking at the manner they treated those victims of Aluthgama lately ?

But all these they continue by telling something else – which is
we Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims are all SRILANKENs and we all have equal rights.

  • 15

It does not need a graduate from Stanford to project election results. Foolish DJ has forgotten the Muslims. Thanks to Bodubalasena being linked to government 90% of Muslims will vote MS. Actually that is why SLMC were compelled to leave the government , because they could not face a parliamentary election if they supported MR at this time.

UNP does have a bloc vote of at least 35 percent in the deep Sinhala heartland as well. MS CBK as well as all the other crossovers from parliament, provincial councils & Pradeshiya sabhas which numbered more than 500 will definitely rip off some of the UPFA vote. Besides only an ostrich adamant to hide its head in the sand will disagree that there is a very visible “Maithree wave.”& many people are disenchanted about the high cost of living , corruption , lack of law & order etc.
MS will get a sizable share of the estate vote as well in spite of Thondaman campainging for MR. & also MS is expected to win Polonnaruwa as well as Anuradha pura or at least come very close to winning which UNP have lost badly in recent times. MR cannot depend on the Sinhala buddhist vote like he did in 2005 & 2010 with JHU on MS ‘s side even if the JHU is now split.

95% OF UNIVERSITY LECTURERS including highly respected ppl like Sarath Wijesuriya support MS this time & it was vice versa earlier. Also several reputed artists who were either silent all this time or supportive of MR have come out to support MS.

If MR does not succeed in masterminding a boycott of Northeastern votes like he did in 2005 THERE IS NO WAY MS CAN LOSE.

I feel the win will be much bigger than any of us anticipate- unless of course there is absolute mayhem on election day .

Pls everyone who agree we need a change, We don’t need 8 more years of this despot so go out as early as possible on election day & cast yr vote so that the verdict of the people cannot be plundered by fraud & violence.

& DJ pls confine yr stupid comments to state media & don’t comment on respected websites like CT which have been blocked by your idol.

One simple question for you, Dayan, if you uncharacteristically choose to answer:

To what further depths must the Rajapaksa regime fall in order for you to critically reassess your anti RW bias and your commitment to a dictatorial state?

State theory has advanced in leaps and bounds since Marx, the Frankfurt school etc. If you insist on defending tyranny while equating that to a defense of the sovereign state, then please get to grips with some of the more recent work on the relationship between power and the formation of states as cultural products.

I must disagree with Dayan J. Sinhala Christians and Catholics, in the warped reality of the current political milieu, are considered by the majority and also view themselves as part of the minorities in the divided land. There is no Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story here.

The undoing of the Rajapakses was in calling the PE 2 years before time. Such a step is normally taken in the interest of the country in particular circumstances for the wider good of the nation. But in our case it was taken in the personal interest of the Rajapakses to continue to inflict their profligate familial rule. Making an enemy of Champika R in removing the Power Ministry from him that went to eventually divide the demagogic JHU and the widely acceptable and popular Anura Dissanayake taking over the helm of affairs in the JVP with his two likeable younger colleagues – where they took the trouble to explain the political nuances to the country – were features that weakened the Rajapakse base. Both these features provided a strong
Sinhala Buddhist platform for political parties that carefully nursed them against a better performing (economy and governance) of UNP lead regimes. And, of course, Maithripala S, at least for the record, son of humble farmer from rural Polonnaruwa. This vital Sinhala Buddhist political base breaking away, with MS as the SLFP GenSec on grounds of criminal corruption and wholesale robbery, are the other features that are likely to do the Royal Family in – not to forget the joining of forces of CBK and the good thinking Mangala – all of which that may see a repeat of CPde Silva’s cross-over in Parliament (1964) his action was to “feel the free air in a free country”

If a change is to come, please remember it was the Tamils – para demalu, for many jaundiced, to once again save the entire country. In the present case, the role of the Muslims also should be given credit to. But let us not lull ourselves into complacency. The Rajapakses, with sections of a much pampered and rogue army, can be expected to resort to the vilest of means to subvert the democratic process.

It is when you hear stories like this that your blood boils,

    http://www.sundaytimes.lk/150104/news/ministers-evidence-raises-more-questions-on-crash-129727.html

One jeep with two owners or two jeeps with the same numberplate?
    Absurd explanations galore in deadly
    hit-and-run mystery

Mahinda, What would you do if this happened to your son?

Can you imagine the pain and agony going through these parents,

The only consolation these parents have is seeing justice happens!

Mahinda Natural Justice will prevail, unless you fix this law and order problem.

Even Premadasa/Ranjan Wijeratne could not escape the mourning of the mothers for their loved ones. How can a decent police officer go to sleep seeing these things.

How can you hope for a better future when Maithreepala did the same thing when his son and goons attacked a man in the beach?

When shall we see a just society in SL?

MR got two chances to prove himself.
      But MS has not yet.
So now – it is the term of MS.
Is this that difficult to get ?
Besides, as any other predecessors MR ruled 2 terms. Why to give him an another mandate knowing the man is beyond all ethics and morals when it goes to YAHA PALANAYA – of the nation blessed with higher social indicators in the region.

Samuel Jayaweera, MS was MR’s minister. when his son and his friends beat up that DIG’s nephew, it was all hushed up.

How did MS’s character change overnight?

That’s what I mean when I say there is no difference between MR and My3. All they want is power. The rotten society stays the same. The vulture politicos fly from one side to the other. An MR ministerial thug yesterday is treated like a national saviour today.

When shall we see a just society in SL? When the people are so sickened that they replace their leaders with upright men.

I have it from very reliable first hand sources that the whole assault on the DIGs son scenario was a preplanned exercise to create a skeleton in Maithri’s closet.
Like most people I too lamented that justice had not been served etc etc and that Maithri’s son gets to go scot free… I was pretty surprised when I was told that this was indeed a ploy.. unfortunately however, even if true, this one incident pales into insignificance the excesses of the son’s of rajapakse cronies i.e drunken inflight antics of keheliya.. Namal actually denying ‘carlton sports network’ or other ‘carlton’ branded things are actually HIS operations- when in relaity they blatantly are!

I flew 9000 miles to vote in this election.
The reason is I don’t want to feel sorry rest of my life for not doing my duty at this critical juncture of my country.
I consider this to be the very last election of my life if MR wins this election.
I have invited most of my friends and relations to my house on the 08th night and we will play cards, have drinks, talk politics like in good old times when my father was living, last memorable election night I remember was the 1977 when JR won handsomely. We will listen to the radio or watch TV till the last ballot is counted and results announced, a true “Nuit Blanche ” of an election night.
why ? Because……this can be the LAST election of this country for a long time to come if MR win. We are not just voting for a president, we may be inserting the last ballot of our life if MR comes out as the winner.
I arrived home on the 1st Jan, I am still to find a single person who will vote for MR, from the young man who changed the tires of my truck to my grocery “mudalali” to Nihal,my Gardner to all my family and divers friends, non said they will vote for MR. This is worrisome as I have never see such one sided voting pattern, it doesn’t seems right.
I’wonder whether this is an urban phenomenon or is this trend a countrywide thing.
Yes, 48 hours!!! MR DJ, let’s wait and see. I’m not a political scientist like You but I have a feeling that MS is going to win, and it may be a landslide win like the UNP in 77!

The Tamil speaking muslim religious minority voted in favor of 18 th amendment had 2 major Political parities in the Government, one was the cabinet justice minister and several other ministers.

Yet what was the reward the community got, Aluthgama and Beruwala Pogroms.

There is no reward or loyality from Majority Hegemonic Sinhala Supremacist.

Tamil Speaking minority has taken a principled stand in the coming presidential Election.

Intimidation and bullying doesn’t work at any level.

DJ [Edited out]. A confused mind with a bloated ego who was able to con the Mara until he was found out and got kicked out. The poor imbecile has no place to go now – note that his tongue has got a bit longer which he is now using for another attempt of last resort to curry favour with the king who will have no kingdom soon. Some of the bankrupt socialist republics like North Korea might be able to use his services – the Korean leader will I am sure get some good advice from this joker. Surprised that his nephew went to Stanford, a US university that is hatching up international conspiracies with the White House to get rid of our exemplary leader.

    DJ,
I was at that Rotary meeting when you first came out with your theory about your nephew punching a hole.
You sounded such a hypocrite standing there pretending to appear that you were confused as to whom to vote!
To the last man in that room everyone knew that once again you have been bought over and you were standing there singing for your supper.
With all your elaborate journey of learning I despair as to when you will really learn some common sense. Can’t you see that the whole country is aware how MR and his brothers are raping this beautiful island. They are all screaming out for a change. One thing I am certain. Your illustrious father will be rolling in his grave!

I thought DJ is too busy presenting his campaign to support the incumbent president through Rupavahini, Derana Tv etc. and he will not write in the CT and waste the readers’ valuable time.
One can see from the largest number of negative responses his article above has received in a very short period of few hours.
He pretends to know-it-all and expects the readers to believe them. Until about 6-7 weeks ago, (before nomination was finalised) he was very interested in the nominee of the UNP and was promoting Sajith and when this failed according to one of his articles he was trying to catch Maithre
which did not succeed and from then onwards he was behind MR. So much for a principled man.
He may be dreaming of a lucrative overseas appointment when/if MR wins and probably in a dreamworld.

    DJ,

I genuinely think that the reason you have veered off the right path is because you stopped practicing your religion. If you had faith in your God you would not defend the thieving murderous despot Rajapaksa.

Your reasoning is flawed and your warped ideas have no takers in the Sri Lanka of today except for those die hard worshippers of Dutapaksha. The man must go and will be gone in 48hours for the good of the country and all its peoples including the catholics, other Christians, tamils, Muslims and of course the long starving sinhala masses.

      Piranha,

I became an agnostic-atheist 30 years ago but that hasn’t affected my morality, my sense of right and wrong, and my sense of justice.

Indeed, one could provide as counter examples many religious people who are utterly depraved.

Character and morality have more to do with the culture and upbringing that shapes it, as well as the amount of self-discipline one is willing to exercise in choosing morality over expediency. Religions might help with this for some people, but with so many internal contradictions, religions can just as well encourage sophistry and immorality.

DJ became pure evil a long time ago, when he realized that being a Marxist academic wasn’t exciting enough, and he would need political patronage to get the things he needed, under the guise of championing the “ordinary” people, the same way every thug in Sri Lanka wants to come to power.

DJ – Sri Lankans have to be lunatics if they vote MR in for a 3rd term, after reading this Statement by your faternity – T e a c h e r s:-

(Statement by the United Front Of The Peradeniya University Lectueres and Alumni)
” Friends, time has come to educate one another about the massive corruption that happens in Sri Lanka under the Present Regime. The Executive has taken the lead in this process resulting in massive debt, virtually mortgaging our mother land to foreign countries. Each individual and even the unborn in Sri Lanka owes close to Rs 400,000.00 as debt to China and other lending agencies. Country is in the threshold of bankruptcy. Today more than 50% parliament members have not even passed the O/L examination. Present regime has no respect for education. Country’s development could be achieved only by educating people. We emphasise that more than 6% of the GDP need to be allocated for education, which the emerging new leadership has promised. Hence we strongly feel that the present regime should be removed for a more thoughtful, compassionate and considerate leadership to take reins to spearhead this beautiful nation to be a DEVELOPED NATION devoid of corruption, family favouritism and protected independent Judiciary. This Government ……… 1. Promised that the presidential system will be repealed, in the “Mahinda Chinthanaya”, instead extended the number of times a president could contest from two times to unlimited. 2. Robbed around 95 Million LKR from the “Tsunami” fund ( Helping Hambantota ) donated by the Japanese government. This was his first political robbery apart from what he made as the Minister of Fisheries. 3. Let all the ministers of his cabinet to rob at their will, hence he could blackmail them. He turned a blind eye when his Prime Minister imported Drugs and few members of his cabinet importing illegal ethanol and drugs. 4. Alienated the country towards China resulting in India developing bitterness with Sri Lanka. 5. Obtained loans from China at rates higher than Libor (London Interbank Offered Rate) to earn commissions. These commissions in billions were routed to Swiss bank accounts via Seychelles, where MR opened a branch of Bank of Ceylon and also an Embassy in a country where only 92000 thousand people live. Sri Lankan airline flies to Seychelles. 6. Built a port where no ships come. Air Port where no Airplanes land. He made billions of commissions doing these projects. 7. Made money building Roads : The cost per km of the Outer Circular Highway from Kadawatha to Kerawalapitiya financed by China is US$ 56 m(Rs.7.3billion) This cost is three times higher than the Kottawa Kaduwela extension of the Southern Highway financed by Japan ,which is Rs.2.4 billion per km. 8. The cost per km of Extension of the Southern Highway from Mattala to Hambantota will cost Rs.2.14billion, whereas per km cost of the Southern Highway cost only Rs.975m 9. Bid price of A9 road was Rs.140 m per km when the departmental estimate for an A class road was Rs. 20m. 10. Construction of the Norochchole Coal Power Project was awarded to a well- established Chinese contractor at US$280.00M in 2005 by the previous regime. Soon after present regime came into power it cancelled the contract and awarded it to another inexperienced Chinese firm at US$520 million-almost double the previous price. Plant is inoperative even after 2years of completion. 11. On a dispute between Essential Services Commissioner and Asset Maritime (Pvt) Ltd arbitrator-a retired High Court Judge awarded Rs.600,000.00 as compensation to the company. A Committee appointed by the President on the intervention of the First Lady awarded Rs.180 million to this company owned by Dhammika Perera and Nishantha Wickramasinghe- latter being a brother of First Lady. 12. Due to the ill-conceived Hedging deal of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation headed by Asantha de Mel (a person connected to the political establishment) lost Rs. 230 billion in2007. No one has been held accountable for huge loss of public funds. 13. Failed to initiate investigations on 29 journalists murdered or disappeared. Lasantha W, Pradeep Eknaligoda 14. Failed to initiate investigations into the deaths of Members of Parliament 1. Raviraj and one other. 15. Appointed 38 numbers of the Presidents family and extended family, to diplomatic missions. 16. Turned a blind eye on losses at Mihin Air to the tune of 6-8 Billion, made by his closest buddy Sajin vas Gunawardane who had been criminally charged previously. He appointed his brother in Law Nishantha Wickramasinghe to Sri Lankan Airlines who has no formal education and made losses to the tune of Rs 70 billion to date. 17. Influenced the judiciary to President’s benefit. Impeached the 43rd Chief Justice for no reason. Makes judicial appointments to his benefit. 18. Allows Presidents children to play (Car races) on the streets of Colombo at their will by closing roads. He over ruled Mahanayake Theroes to hold car races for his children in Kandy town. 19. Failed to nominate Election, Police, Public Service and Judicial services commissions. 20. Udayanga Weeratunga – Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia. Cousin of President Rajapakse. Accused of involving in a shady deal to purchase MIG Fighters for the Sri Lankan Air force. 21. Paid 700.00Million rupees to Prabhakaran to purchase weapons to kill innocent Sinhalese using Karuna Amman who is now a deputy Minister and a Vice President of the SLFP. He uses Kumar Pathmanathan alias LTTE arms dealer to his personal benefit. 22. How Karuna was sent to London “ On August 30, 2007 the Department of Immigration and Emigration issued a diplomatic passport number D1944260 in the name of “Kokila Dushmantha Gunawardena” whose occupation on the passport was given as Director General of Wildlife Conservation. The photograph on the passport was that of Karuna Amman. The Department of Immigration, it is pertinent to note, comes under the Ministry of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order of which Gotabaya Rajapakse is Secretary and President Rajapakse the Minister”. 23. Failed to conduct an impartial inquiry into killing of around 43 prisoners at the Welikada Prison. 24. Did nothing to improve the economy and failed to introduce workers charter. Economy in shambles. 25. Arranged for his son to sit for the Law exams in an isolated air-conditioned room, away from the other candidates. 26. Killed protesters in Rathupaswala (8), Free Trade Zone (1) and Chilaw (4). He used maximum force on all protestors.”

DJ’s support of MR is based on a non existent western threat and totally ignores SL’s increasing dependancy on china even at the cost of antagonizing India.
DJ has no qualms with the rampant corruption, nepotism, politicisation of the judiciary and what not,creating/supporting extremists racist groups like the BBS to name just afew

It is often difficult to hide the bigotry that resides in an individual. Why is that politics in Sri Lanka must always be viewed from an ethnic / race / religious perspective and not as a rivalry between parties / policies / and personalities. If one takes the latter view, the UNP and SLFP have normally polled around 40% in most elections and that leaves about 20% to other parties (e.g., JVP) / individuals. If the UNP vote of 40% (be it from Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, atheists or assorted non-believers)holds up this time, and assuming that the ‘other block’ splits equally, then if MS can take around 5 – 10% of the core SLFP vote, Sirisena would win, despite wishful thinking from MR’s arse-lickers. We will know in four days. In the meanwhile, it is best for your nephew to get back to Palo Alto and avoid getting into matters beyond his comprehension.

Who is this guy? Now I know why he is hated so much here by reading from the comments.
Stanford nephew, celebrity dinners at restaurants owned by rebel MPs. What has that got to do with the election.

The leadership is not the only criteria of a President. Hitler was a leader and he mesmerized the German public and got elected. Yet he did so much damage to the humanity which Germany is still suffering from.

The leadership qualities have to be accompanied by basic human values. Among those are human decency, honesty and care for others who are less powerful in the society. A leader can steal from countries like Libya (Gaddafi), Indonesia (Suharto), Iraq (Saddam)and even Malaysia (Mahathir) and still not do too much damage to its people. These countries are rich and full of natural resources. I am not advocating here that stealing from rich countries is acceptable.

When one steals from Sri Lanka he steal from the poorest of the poor and they have to foot the bill some day.

Dayan, please tell us what you like about the incumbent? Is it his ruthless supression of dissent? Is it the fact that he has enriched his family through corrupt means while neglecting the livelihood of the masses? Is it that he has spent exorbitant amounts and overpaid massively on vanity projects? Or is it that he has installed his incompetent henchmen to run public institutions? Is it that he has politicized and corrupted every facet of public service from the military to the judicial service? Is it that he was so greedy for power that he repealed the two term presidential limit via the 18th amendment, and destroyed the independence of public institutions by repealiing the 17th amendment? Is it that he has fostered and nourished the vile and racist BBS since he is unable to resurrect the head of the LTTE snake to use to rally his extremist supporters around him? Is it because more journalists have been killed or “white-vanned” under his watch that any other president? Please…tell us why you support this incumbent.

He has been suffering from a rare kind of syndrome – that is identified with SELFISHNESS OF HIGHER MAGNITUDE.
He has been dreaming of getting posted to a foreign destination soon after his master – in case he would win the election.
Else, nobody knows why the buggers has been supporting MR in this way.

    Dayan J
You are one sorry apology for mankind, aren’t you? What a dishonest, opportunistic speck of abject analyst are you, if you cannot see the destruction your hero has wreaked in our motherland? You may wish to read Punchinilame’s post above for the litany of misdeeds recorded against this humbug of a politician, who has also had a double murder charge against him dismissed due to ‘disappearance’ of two eye-witnesses. Can you not fathom that such a loser will not stop at anything to get ahead by foul means?

There is a lingering fear amongst the populace, that your hero will, via a mix of twisting the ballot, committing thuggery against ethnic groups, voter intimidation and wilful disenfranchisement, get ahead (as he has done so well in the past), but pray tell me man, if he should win and then appoint you as the External Affairs honcho, would you be happy to serve such a beast in all honesty?

If the answer is yes, then you are no better than that other ‘doctor’ Vermyn Silva and the procurator-general Sajin Vaas Gunda.

What a walking tragedy you are….
