A Film Of Alleged War Crimes … How I Became Sri Lanka’s Most Hated Man

By Callum Macrae –

Callum Macrae

They haunt our every move, on their motorbikes in their silver hatchback and on their tuk tuks. Sri Lanka’s intelligence officers are a tenacious lot, but there’s another group perhaps even more tenacious in their pursuit of us: “spontaneous”, pro-government demonstrators.

They were there when the Channel 4 news team and I arrived at the airport. They turned up outside our hotel that night – and when we set off by train to travel north to the former war zone, there they were again. There were a few hundred of them with hurriedly written posters, denouncing us as Tamil Tiger supporters. They blockaded our train and eventually forced us to return to Colombo.

So here’s the issue. There are two versions of the situation in the traumatised north-east of the island, where perhaps 40,000 or even more, innocent Tamil civilians died in the horrific last few months of Sri Lanka’s civil war that lasted a quarter of a century.

The government and its supporters say the place is transformed: there are new roads, they say, new schools, former fighters “rehabilitated”, hotels being built and elections held.

But the Tamils who live there tell another story. They speak of continuing misery, of military occupation, of a climate of fear. A place where thousands remain homeless while army land-grabs continue unabated. Where thousands are still missing – and many women who remain are subject to the systematic use of sexual violence as a weapon of repression.

Of course, the way for journalists to get to the truth is to go there and see for themselves. But despite assurances from the president himself that we would be free to travel, it was not to be; several hundred noisy government supporters made sure of that.

That’s the problem for those who would try to hide the truth. If you want to work out which side is telling lies, you just have to work out who is trying to stop you seeing things with your own eyes. Here’s a clue: it wasn’t the Tamils.

This meeting of the Commonwealth heads of government is rapidly turning into a PR catastrophe for both the government of Sri Lanka and the Commonwealth itself. The extraordinary prospect of a Commonwealth committed to core principles of democracy, human rights and freedom of expression being hosted by a government which routinely flouts every one of those values is bad enough. But if this same government is also made the subject of a call by the UN Human Rights Council for an international investigation into alleged war crimes and alleged crimes against humanity (as might well happen next March), then this could be terminal for the Commonwealth’s credibility.

For Sri Lanka’s president, what he hoped would be the golden chalice of the Commonwealth summit is rapidly changing into a poisoned one – and the problem is that Colombo’s supporters blame that process almost entirely on Channel 4. In particular, Channel 4 News and – with extra, added venom – me.

We were gratified when, in something of a first for international diplomacy, David Cameron tweeted last week that he’d watched my most recent film, No Fire Zone, broadcast two week ago, and that as a result he had serious questions to ask President Mahinda Rajapaksa about what happened. It was a significant and surprisingly straightforward pledge. The downside is that it didn’t make us any more popular.

Every night Sri Lankan television carries stories stating quite unequivocally that I am a Tiger supporter. These sentiments are echoed by government spokesmen who suggest I – and Channel 4 – are funded by the defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The fact that we have accused the Tigers, too, of war crimes, of using suicide bombers and targeting civilians, counts for nothing. These wild denunciations are pretty unpleasant – and a direct act of incitement which has inevitably translated into a number of death threats. I am probably the most hated man in Sri Lanka at the moment. I am a celebrity and they want me out of here.

But look behind these threats and hysteria – beyond the front page banner headlines that read “End of the road for Callum Macrae” and you detect a different current underneath. It was Jonathan Miller of Channel 4 News who first noticed it. As a tuk tuk drove past, the passenger inside saw us and gave a furtive, discreet little thumbs-up. Then it happened again. And others, when no one is looking, came up and asked for a photograph with us.

It is very clear there are a lot of people in Sri Lanka who are very happy to see their increasingly despotic ruling family coming under pressure.

      Callum Macrae

You became most hatred man in Sri Lanka , because of your partial reporting & worst ever by any body calling himself a Journalist.

Can you tell How many films did you make on following on war crimes ?
1.Killing of tens of thousands innocent by LTTE during 26 years long war ??

2.Of thousands poorest of poor fresh born babies/ children/ pregnant mothers/men hacked to death in border villages in their sleeping mat by LTTE?

3.Of 378 suicide explosions by LTTE in Sri Lanka out of some 425 in the whole world up to 19 th May 2009 ??

4.Of hundreds bomb explosions in Buses / Trains/ Railway stations/bus terminals /market places/public gatherings/religious places by LTTE, killing thousands of civilians ?

5.Taking some 250,000 innocent Tamils as “Human Shield” in last 03 months of war to protect LTTE “Terrorist heroes” & killing hundreds of them mercilessly when they tried to escape & exposing them to danger of being killed in cross fire, by LTTE ?? knowing very well death & destruction were about to come.

6.Killing thousands of members of other Tamil militant groups in day light.?

7.Killing dozens of Democratically elected Tamil politicians by LTTE?

No Channel -4 never did films on those , so any wonder you guys are most hated by Sri Lankans ?

Sinahalese people suffered death & destruction silently for 26 long years, with no any Channel 4 or any body making their plight known to international community.

Why don’t you or any body US/UK/UN etc. talk about those ??
No doubt C-4 are on LTTE payroll , with millions of US$ getting in to you guys’ wallets.

On International scene, have you done films on following ?

8.Continuing killings of Arabs by Israel , from 1967 todate, courtesy USA ? with 05 million Palestinians chased out from Jerusalem ??making them stateless ?? with over 21 UN security council resolutions vetoed by USA??

9.Killings of 1.2 million innocent Iraqis by US/UK in search of WMD they never found. ? & not a single US/UK soldier being court-martialled over those crimes against humanity ?? having no moral right for UK/US/West to ask smaller countries accountability ??

Why the hell you C 4 guys bring war crimes allegations against ONE Party in a war & against ONE country ??,

Does Channel 4 think, Rich & powerful countries have license to kill hundred times more & ask other smaller countries accountability ?? because it’s tiny ??

What moral right West have in doing so, whilst keeping millions of skeletons in their own cupboard ?? & C4 on LTTE payroll has ??

C-4 is dammed , there should be one rule & fairness, or better you stop damned thing for good or expect hatred for ever.

Since Sri Lankan citizens have to foot the MEGA bill of the Colombo Commonwealth circus to boost the Rajapakse dictatorship, in the form of greater NATIONAL DEBT and rising cost of Living, the people of the country have the right and civil society the duty to focus on holding Kamlesh Sharma and the Commonwealth of Nations as much as Rajapakse, ACCOUNTABLE through a well thought out campaign.

It is time to hold Kamlesh Sharma and the Common poverty of Nations ACCOUNTABLE to the common citizens and peoples that it claims to benefit. There should be a transparent and comprehensive EVALUATION of the Commonwealth of Clowns which violates its own core values of “democracy and rule of law” and promotes dictators. No organization is above MONITORING, EVALUATION and results measurement. Given its track record a TRANSPARENT EVALUATION of the organization and its RESULTS is required and should be the HIGHEST PRIORITY. Otherwise this British Colonial relic should be shut down.

An EVALUATION of this British colonial relic organization’s performance and the CHOGM which leaves a massive Carbon Foot prince should evaluation if it has helped reduce poverty and inequality in the 60 years of its existence or made it worse? Why is its agenda a poor imitation of the UNDP agenda? Why does it boost human rights violators like Mahinda Rajapakse? etc.
Time to hold Commonwealth and Rajapakse ACCOUNTABLE or SHUT THEM BOTH DOWN!

We ordinary citizens of Sri Lanka, very much appreciate your commitment to ACCOUNTABILITY and human rights and exposure of the crimes of the Rajapakse brothers regime in Sri Lanka Mr Macrae, and would like you to also shine the same light on the British Commonwealth which should be held ACCOUNTABLE in terms of the Civil and Political and Economic and Social Rights it claims to uphold of ordinary people.
Indeed Mr. Macrae, Please do a film that assesses and EVALUATED the performance of the Commonwealth of Nation’s from a historical and cost-benefit analysis perspective.. including the massive Carbon Footprint of CHOGM which is essentially a hot air carnival for third world dictators and their former white masters.. It may be that you would conclude like I have the Commonwealth actually promotes the common poverty of nations and really is an obsolete and irrelevant colonial outfit that would be shut down… The British people have a right to know that this is what many educated people in the global south think!

              0

Indeed BBC and Chanel 4 should do some objective reporting on the BIG PICTURE of the Commonwealth and train critical eye on the organization…

              0

Yes Chanel 4 appreciate your excellent critical and path breaking film on Sri Lanka and war crimes but also the Commonwealth of Clowns is a British Holy COW that must be evaluated dispassionately by the critical press, English intellectuals and development industry including DIFID that is very good at preaching monitoring and evaluation of organizations and development projects in the third world!

Shine the torch inward as well!

              • 0
                0

CHOGM leaves a massive CARBON FOOTPRINT and is a hot aid talk shop with NO results to show. We need a COST BENEFIT analysis of this and the whole Commonwealth Circus and its projects which do not seem to have any logical frameworks or result monitoring and measurement..

Seems this is a massive waste of funds which would be better spent on poverty eradication through the UN system which is far more professional and ACCOUNTABLE that this British colonial relic that is neither fish flesh nor fowl and lacks dicection, focus and ACCOUNTABILITY to its purported BENEFICIARIES!

        John, before you blame CH4 address the following issues that concern all Sri Lankans;
1- Who was responsible for the tamil problem and LTTE taking up arms? – Sri Lanka’s politicians, especially the SLFP with SWRD’s ‘Sinhala only’ stance.
2- Who contributed most to fight the terrorism? – Armed forces and Police, and Sri lanka’s tax payers.
3- Who has benefited from the end of the war ? MR and family. The people only have the freedom to travel to the north and east.
4- Who has benefited from LTTE funds? ask KP how he has bought his freedom. A front man of the LTTE and VP’s arms procurement man walks free, without any charges of HR violations, terrorism. Lesser offenders are still lying in jail without a hope of getting out.
5- Who has benefited from LTTE paramilitary? Look at Karuna Amman, the man accused of cold blooded slaughter of 800+ policemen, now govt’s representative in the east with police and army guard. No charges against this monster.
6- Who has got rich or super rich after the war?, who got the LTTE gold?, who gets commissions still for buying weapons for a military in barracks?, who flouts the law?, whoa acts with impunity?, who attacks christian churches, muslim mosques, hindu temples??…..the bloody list goes on.
CH4 are not being paid by LTTE it is our lot that got richer, thanks to the LTTE.
John or whoever you are CH4 has done Sri Lankans a justice which they are not getting in their own country. I ask CH4 to investigate the above issues which is post war and ongoing.

BRAVO CHANNEL 4 ALL EDUCATED CULTURED SRI LANKANS WHO ARE NOT HANGING ON TO THE LOIN CLOTH OF THE RAJAPAKSES ARE WITH YOU.

I addressed it to C-4 on their journalism, which they should answer.

You talk about ethnic issue hanging around from 1920’s, days we were not even born., completely a different issue. We’ll discuss it some other day. Don’t mix it up here.

That is the real “Tamil” problem. The so called Tamil champions cannot understand ch4 and Sri lanka.

When Sinhala was declared the Official language of Sri lanka in 1956, the Banda government imported Tamil type writers too. Why? The Official language act stipulates every state corrospondance must accompany a TAMIL translation also.

S J V Selvanayakam never asked to implement the law with all provisions but he opposed and wanted ENGLISH back.

I think the Tamil fools are mislead by the CHRISTIAN selvanayakam. The Christian/Catholic Churches are still unpatriotic and boot lickers of WHITEs even today.

you are the fool. They imported Tamil typewriters to type the Sinhala words in Tamil. Not the Tamil Transaltion of the Sinhala word.

i dont think you have the brain to undertand it, so here it is

Banner across the CHOGM 2013 speaker’s podium exemplifies what Sri Lanka means by ‘reconciliation’ and its famous ‘tri-lingual policy’.
              ආයුඛෝවන් – (“ayubowan” – Sinhala for ‘welcome’)
ஆயுபோவன் – (“ayubowan” again, not “வணக்கம்” or “vanakkam” – Tamil for ‘welcome’)
Ayubowan – (written in English, just in case it wasn’t clear the first two times who is host and who does the welcoming)

              You couldn’t make this up..”

Just like the LTTE supporters feeling bitter about their demise; you on the other hand cannot handle any blemish on King MR! You and the LTTE supporters are two sides of the same coin. You cannot have a moral high ground without the truth; the truth is exactly what Callum is about. When this is over he will start on another one; I for one am extremely happy that people like him are about otherwise voiceless have no voice even though sometime it may go against my view.

            John

            Callum’s major work:

“Several of his documentaries were investigations on war crimes.
Unreported World (2003) (Directed and filmed) – on the Civil war in Uganda
A Day of War (War coverage) – Covered the war in Northern Uganda for BBC. Filmed a massacre on the Sudan/Uganda border.
Iraq’s Mission Billions (2006) – On the Coalition’s alleged misuse of billions of Iraqi fund during the Iraq War.
On Whose Orders – A Panorama series investigation on the allegations of unlawful killings in Iraq by the British troops.
No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka (2013)
Apart from war documentaries, he has directed documentaries on other subjects such as on sex workers and child wedding practice among Romani people in Romania.”

Be honest with yourself and think even if he had only produced a programme about Sri Lanka why should that matter. It is obvious you have not challenged the authenticity of the evidence but questioning his choice. It is a bit pathetic isn’t it?

I’m talking about C-4 journalism, how come they ignore atrocities of the other party in the war they were reporting ?? Knowing very well they were the most ruthless terror out fit in the world, banned in so many countries including UK, with more than enough
evidence & video material available for them or anybody ?

You say they did film on billion corruption in Iraqi war , not over a Million deaths at the hands of UK/US forces & more over, not a single war crime charges against US/UK soldiers or their political masters ( Blair & Bush) Further as journalists from UK itself why don’t they ask what moral right UK/US have in asking for accountability from other countries for lesser offences ?? Is this right ??

                John,

Please do not make moronic utterances on public forums. All you will do is to manifest your stupidity and ignorance.

Obviously, you have access to the net and you should do extensive research before putting pen to paper.

Can you point me to a single instance where, the UK or US for that matter, failed to investigate and punish those who committed war crimes and crimes against humanity?

Can you show me anywhere in the world where a sovereign government, set up no-fire zones and allegedly deliberately fired and killed thousands of civilians?

Can you also show on this forum that the Blaire/Bush Iraq/Afghanistan missions were illegal?

Almost all western countries banned the LTTE; assisted the GOSL; supplied arms in quest of fighting the LTTE. In return, MR assured the western leaders that, he will resolve the Tamil question amicably. What did he do? Instead, he weakened the democratic institutions to his advantage; he surrounded himself with bigots, murderers; racketeers and fools building an empire. You need to get real for a change.

The Channel 4 has been producing a programme called Despatches; do some research on this. If anything, you need to congratulate Channel 4 for taking an interest in Sri Lanka in order that their focus will improve democratic rights to her subjects. With this international spotlight, Sri Lanka will have no option but to align with the international standards. Be honest with yourself; your turn will come to oppose a regime and if your dissent were to brutally suppressed, then you will know what I am talking about!

Are you a donkey ?? Killing people of Iraq does not amount to crime against humanity ??

                  Because they were Muslims ??

Are you monkey paid for by US/West NGO’s to turn truth upside down ??

It is no good you calling names that will not prove anything but your ignorance! You need a lot of growing up to do I am afraid; the sooner you do this it is better for all concerned.

Your irrational outbursts will not do good to heart; I suggest you take a deep breath and try and understand things logically. Read information more than once as it appears that you have problems decipher information in conjunction with other factors! Good luck.

C4 was embraced and mobbed where ever they went. On their way to Killinochi they were give a red carpet welcome and refreshment at Anuradhapura, the Sri Lankan Govt twisted it as a protest and sent them back to Colombo fearing their popularity.

Even local journalists were giving them thumbs up and a wink in a discrete manner not to get caught in the filming of the secret police.

Oh, look… the regime propaganda machine has pulled up the big guns, with fact lists and all; and capable of constructing comprehensible sentences too.

Back in the 90s and 00s we too prepared similar lists to counter LTTE propaganda and were frequently on ‘soc.culture.sri lanka’, BBSes and Internet forums. You probably got hold of one of those old lists.

You know the difference between your list and ours, John? Yours is outdated and irrelevant. People who committed those heinous crimes are now dead and gone.

Today the problem is a world recognized government in the hands of a character worse than Prahakaran (he at least didn’t tolerate sexual violence, booze, gambling and corruption) surrounded by criminals worse than Pottu Amman, Soosai and Thamilchelvan. In their futile attempt to “rule forever” they will kill a lot of innocent people and ruin a country socially and economically for generations to come. If not for the destruction we all could have just watched it and laughed about the stupid clown show. So a list of atrocities by a dead group of terrorists is not relevant at all today.

KATMAL, ” SO A LIST OF ATROCITIES BY A DEAD GROUP OF TERRORISTS IS NOT RELEVANT”

HOW ABOUT A LIST OF ATROCITIES BY THREE TOP TERRORIST LEADERS SUCH AS KP, KARUNA AND DOUGLAS DEVANANDA” FUGITIVES FROM JUSTICE SHELTERED BY THE PREZ AND THE COUTRY’S DS.

THEY WANT A FILM OF LTTE ATROCITIES ? WELL, GIVE IT TO EM CALLUM. CAN MASS MURDERERS TURN STATE WITNESSES? WE KNOW THAT IT’S PERMITTED IN CASES OF MINOR CIVILIAN CRIME. ANY LEGAL LIGHT ON THIS FROM ANYONE?

IN ANY CASE, IT WILL BE QUITE A FILM.

        John
There is a sea of difference between a terrorist organisation killing innocent beople and a sovereign state killing its innocent people in thousands. Why do you find it so difficult to grasp this very basic fact?!!

Channel 4 has repeatedly said that the LTTE also commuted war crimes, but to a lessor extend than the SL regime.

“Why dont they speak about the drone strikes,”

They have drones and you don’t. They don’t kill their own people and you do.

When push comes to shove you know the people will not be on despot’s side.

So treat the people with respect and allow them to exercise their democratic rights, they will be prepared to sacrifice their life for their leaders.

              Native Vedda,

“They have drones and you don’t. They don’t kill their own people and you do.”

Other than Sinhala Buddhists (and Christians?) and Tamil Hindus (and Christians), are there many others who do? Just curious.

        Well done John.

LTTE killed more than twenty thousands TAMIL people because they questioned the LTTE.

All the Tamil/Sinhala/Indian leaders were perished at the hands of LTTE.

LTTE is not for any Tamil issues. LTTE is a mercenary force of Britain. That is why Britain is still harboring Adele Balasingam who is the notorious WHITE devil. She was in-charge of six torture camps for women. After IPKF left LTTE went on hunting women from the homes of other groups. They arrested mothers, wives, sisters, and other females from those homes.

Those women were tortured, raped and killed. When Gen.Janaka Perera chased out the LTTE from Jaffna in 1995, few old women were able to go away from those camps.

Some of them are still alive to tell the horror of Adele Balasingam.

Will this Macrae make film on the torture, rape and killings of LTTE? I will provide details and contacts.

Minister Douglas Devananda is alive to tell how he escaped from the 11 murder attempts of LTTE. 13 LTTE suicide bombers were perished.

Douglas Devananda’s own brother was kidnapped and burnt alive by LTTE.

Macrae’s cartoons are proven as lies and cooked up ones. No court will accept but created “sensations” only. USA simply threw this guys bogus stories in the garbage.

Brits created LTTE and lost but their intimidation continues. Sri lankan government must go to Hague and file a case of war crimes against Britain.

TAMIL was used by LTTE to kill many political leaders in the region for the interest of Brits and their allies.

But Brits must know, Thatchar era intimidation never work in Sri Lanka.

Now Brits become the saviours of LTTE criminals.

True, West took control of LTTE after Rajiv Gandhi was killed in 1991 & used it for their own ulterior motives,to destabilize not only Sri Lanka but whole South Asian region including India, financed by US/West NGO’s, supplying them with high-tech , logistical, moral, political support.

After terror struck US, they played a double role, nominally banning LTTE but allowing fronts to operate but under surveillance, to be used if & when necessary,or to destroy in case of disobedience.(ex. Osama Bin laden & Al-Queida /Teliban , creations of US/west)

That was the very reason US attempted to sent 7th fleet to evacuate LTTE leadership at 11th hour unsuccessfully,to be used again, but SL forces decimated them, without trace, so the anger of US/West ,so much so within weeks of war victory brought resolution against Lanka at UNHRC & continuing.

EELAM fiasco is a creation of USA under the policy of Reagan-Margarat Thatchar.

When the pro-US governemnt of JRJ came to power, hundreds of NGOs swarmed Sri Lanka. CIA operatives too arrived under the garb of NGOs. Two of them stationed in Chavakachcheri and supply money to LTTE and others.

Douglas Devananda, then the military commander of the EPRLF arrested them and exposed them to the world. Then only many Tamils started to feel this EELAM is not for the benefit of the Tamils. Leftists among Tamils started to inform the public. LTTE killed all the Tamil leftists at their first round of killings. Barrister Annamalai, Vijayaanandan and many leftists were simply killed by LTTE.

Catholic/Anglican churches became partners of the terror. The priests of these churches opnly involved in Bank robberies.

Catholic Church was with LTTE till the last days at Mulli Vaykkal.

LTTE was the chosen as the BEST slave mercenary by the UK/USA interests and supplied the LTTE lavishly.

When LTTE started to log horns with India, not only me but many astonished. Why and how?

One thing is sure. The same forces are still lurking to force Sri lanka to get what they want even today. Cameron’s threat proves it.

True, West had a master plan to carve out a separate state comprising N&E of Lanka & parts of Kerala & Tamil Nadu of India, this was lengthily discussed by Indian intellectuals / think tanks in some prestigious Indian websites & exposed, during last 03-04 years & they recon the plan was busted by SL military victory decimating LTTE once & for all.

West always have A or B or C plans, but I guess all those were over as far as that separate state is concerned.

          Siva,

KP (LTTE Chief of Arms Procurement), Karuna (LTTE eastern commander and cold blooded murderer of 800+ policemen who surrendered), Day Master, etc are too alive. They in fact have bought their freedom in Sri Lanka. So why the heck should the British Govt or any other govt act against Adele Balasingham, the LTTE or the Tamil diaspora in their countries?????

If the government of Sri Lanka is honest then they will charge the above under terrorism and punish them to the full extent of the law. If you can’t do that then shut-up.

          • 0
            0

They gave up LTTE and changed their minds in another direction but Adele is not. KP and others got the pardon from the Sri Lankan state. 12,000 surrendered LTTE members are also on the same boat. There is no law to punish the people who got the pardon.

So UK has a duty to charge her first. If UK cannot do so, it must shutup and leave the matter.

I think your shallow knowledge of law make you to bark!

CAN YOU ALSO TELL US HOW THIS PARDON WAS WON, WAS IT JUST BY SAYING I AM NOW A GOOD BOY OR WAS THERE MORE MOTIVATING CIRCUMSTANCES, SUCH AS MONEY,MONEY, MONEY AND GOLD, GOLD, GOLD?

What C4 saying is some of the Lankan soldiers were involved in war crimes and therefore they need to investigated and punished.

        John

I can not comment about your intellectual ability but I can comment on your lies you are trying to peddle here.LTTE killed only little over ten thousand Sinhala armed forces not Sinhala civilians. Where as Sinhala armed forces killed over 150000 innocent Tamil civilians including women, children and elderly. You are bullshitting again by saying thousands of fresh born babies were killed in the border villages. Utter nonsense the people in the Kent and dollar farms were not Ordinary Sinhala civilians but criminals who were planted there with guns to kill Tamil civilians by the Sinhala govt. A Sinhala criminal who was the then deputy defence minister ie Lalith Athlath muthali was responsible for setting up these Sinhala thugs in border villages to kill Tamil civilians . They were a legitimate target for the LTTE.

For your information unlike the Sinhala army and the Sinhala thugs LtTE did not systematically kill civilians. There may have been civilian deaths when LTTE targeted military targets and the civilians would have been killed that way . In any event after the central bank bombing in Colombo some time in the early 1990’s LTTe stopped targeting civilians . They only attacked military targets. Sinhala army’s atrocities. Can only be brought out if an internationally supervised investigation is carried out. If the Sinhalese want let them level their accusation against the LTTE also in that war crimes tribunal. The Tamils have nothing to hide but the Sinhalayas are trying to obstruct such a move by the international communnity hence their vitriolic attack on Chanel 4 journalists. We stand by Callum macare. We will support him. He need not fear anyone to expose all the war criminals from this god forsaken little dipstick of a piece of land called srilunatic Lanka.

Unfortunately C4 missed the precursor to all this – the massacre of our JVP boys by the GOSL in 1971. Then again C4 can be excused for obvious reasons.

This shitty November was waiting to happen from ever since the last of the colonial masters left and the tribes resumed their suspended internecine massacres. Blame the gods of our ancestors who placed us side by side on this magical island for this whole

unwholesome mess. We Sri Lankans are indeed a feral lot. Jealous. Vengeful. Devious. And inexplicably; If you live amongst us you will hear the daily unceasing blaming of the colonial master for all this. Yet succesive governments of SL never took the most logical step of getting out of the embrace of the old white chief. There is an indelible streak in the Sri Lankan, the brown sahib, who wants to educate his sprog in the west and wants to be seen sucking up to the white man. We just seem unable to let go. Now our unholy business has spilt over onto to streets of the west and we rile at you people for coming to check things out.

It was never our intention that you help us with our dirty laundry. But you must see that not all of us subscribe to the blind sycophancy that blights our political life. Our political state is a classic text book case of when the lunatics take over the asylum. Democracy is regularly touted as our licence but what we have is a bastardisation of the democratic ideal. Still, the parvenu’s, thugs and crooks who run our country hold the upper hand and their tribal supporters are happy to let them. No wonder the steady drip of our people to other lands.

For us who witnessed the brutal put down of the JVP in 1971 (thank you to the British government and others for helping our socialist-marxist goverment of the time with arms and anti-terrorist advice) and then again the brutal annhilation of the second JVP uprising of 1987-89 (again, thank you to the British government and others for helping our right-wing goverment of the time with arms and anti-terrorist advice), we marvel that no one in the west made any documentaries of the widely practised extrajudicial killings of the time. What happened C4? Let’s just say the GOSL got lucky that no one noticed. Never mind, the JVP were all Sinhalese anyway – and we have many of them. When the time came to take out the odious and misguided Tigers, our old boys thought that they will get away with it again. They are most peeved that someone ran away to tell tales and worse still, mobile cameras stored the evidence. How inconvenient!

I am confident that our persevering and resourceful Tamil brethren will find peace, happiness and success in the lands that gave them sanctuary.

Here, in our tropical paradise there will be new roads and other long-overdue developments but alas until we lay the ghosts of our sinhalese and tamil victims to rest we shall be tormented by the ever restless curse of the dead as they haunt our beautiful hills and valleys and our golden shores.

Callum, Jonathan and indeed all your team, Thank You for coming, have a safe journey home

      Callum McRae,

Sri Lanka has learned a few lessons from your Country and its Allies.

Sri Lanka takes steps beforehand, to stop people like You, from being blown up by LTTE Land Mines and LTTE Terrorists.

Yes, there are some still left in the North, and they will stop at nothing to bring discredit to Sri Lanka! You would not be writing this crap today, if the Police had not intervened (while you were distracted, listening to the ‘Wailing Widows’), and kept the Terrorists at Bay.

Your Country’s Secret Police were not efficient enough to stop Julian Assange and Edward Snowdon from airing all your classified information to the outside World.

Have you been to Iraq and Afghanistan to report on the Human Rights Violations by your Country, on those unfortunate people? No, because they do not have a defeated and disgruntled Diaspora whispering in your ears for the last 4 years!

Also, Because you know that those Countries would not take steps to safeguard outsiders like you, bent on interfering in their Internal Affairs.

      Callum Mcrae,
If you happen to read CT, please disregard this man called ‘John’ who is a paid nitwit of this horrendous regime, who is here to white wash Rajapaksas from dawn to dusk 24/7.

This John is the only guy who writes pro regime comments here in dozens of different Pseudonym. Here he already used a few of his stupid stage names such as Max Silva, M Sivanandan, Hadagamba, Banda, The professional, KAS Sumanasekara, Fathima Fukushima.

He is basically one of those Dobi (soiled Linen cleaner) of the fake King. So please ignore him, its not the view of majority of the Sri Lankans. We want a just society. We want our CEYLON back.

WE hated the LTTE and we now hate the BBS. We got rid one Terrorist but unfortunately its been replaced with a state sponsored terrorism.

      Dear Mr. Callum Macrae,

Only a very small fraction of the Sri Lankan’s hate you. The majority wants the truth, bring this to a conclusion and be done with, except those who are culpable and guilty. ( By the way, the USA and the UK follow double standards, you must be aware of)

“That’s the problem for those who would try to hide the truth. If you want to work out which side is telling lies, you just have to work out who is trying to stop you seeing things with your own eyes. Here’s a clue: it wasn’t the Tamils.”

“it wasn’t the Tamils.” because it was the Sinhala who did the war crimes this time, even though the Tamils have done their war crimes earlier.

Now only after 2009, but before that the LTTE and the Tamils did try to hide unsuccessfully the many crimes they committed, such as killing of Rajiv Gandhi, Sinhala and Muslim Villages, expulsion of Muslims and Sinhala etc.

You became hated, ONLY FOR THOSE WHO WANTED TO HIDE THE TRUTH, in Sri Lanka, as it was in their Self-Interest. Martin Luther was hated in Europe in 1521, Galileo in 1600 etc., because of SELF-INTERRST OF THOSE IN POWER. Same here in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Macrae, it is in your self-interest to ride this as a journalist, the the Macrae Brand, and the Chanel 4 Brand, irrespective of whatever the outcome is going to be. You will be a winner.

About LLTE, and its remnants, GTF, Global Tamil Forum. They should be correctly depicted as:

GTTF, Global Tamil Terrorist Forum or

      FTTG, Former Tamil Terrorists, Global.

      Callum Macrae,

      Thanks for visiting.

Too bad you were not really welcome. I do not approve harassment of you guys. It was a bit silly of us. However, Sri Lankans are not very fond of your journalism.

You have reported major crimes. That is good. But, your reports rekindle ethnic hatred. So totally lacks context. And smacks of relentless Sri Lanka bashing.

On your return flight, please look at following clip. A massacre of Sri Lankan soldiers by LTTE killers after a battle. Soldiers who should have been POWs. We have forgotten the nightmare Sri Lanka has just overcome. Content warning:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uphj8Vohec

Looking forward to you documentary on LTTE crimes. which includes footage from above mentioned horrific clip.

Please note a large portion of funding required for LTTE crimes came from the UK.

Agree with you Sri Lanka’s despotic, lawless ruling family should be pressured out of Colombo. Your support for that project is welcome.

Stand with the whole of Sri Lanka and all her people. Not with cunning LTTE despots in the die-ass-pora.

      Bon Voyage!

          fund raising in the west,
          Child recruitment,
          murder of 700 surendered policemen,
how Karuna’s cadres dealt with ethnic cleansing of Muslims in the North,………

Yes, McRae is brave to the extent that he used to wake up at 3 am to do his garbage run in and around freezing condition in London before he suddenly became a celebrity among the Sri Lankan NGOs, LTTE leftovers and other saboteurs.

He is not a permanent employee of C4 in Britain and they buy some of his videos for telecast. That is the connection – that too because Jonathan Miller is friendly with him. He is over the moon it looks like that David Cameron mentioned his piece of garbage by name. That is only because it served Cameron’s purpose – He is looking for a place to bomb.

India, an undisputed land of press freedom refused him a visa. Why? Because he is no journalist of repute.

He refused to pay the van that transported him too. The man is a fraud who revels in his celebrity status among the partisans in Sri Lanka.

This man is unknown in the UK and he is a ‘journalist’ scrounging for grants from various shadowy US groups.
      He can’t fool everyone.

It seem that by embracing a CHOGM WHITE ELEPHANT, Mahinda Rajapakse, has put the noose around his own head: the call for an international investigations into war crimes and rights violations has hit the roof!

During the PR disaster that CHOGM was the whole world (except some Sinhala village idiots impressed by the abundance of gyrating dancing girls and elephants to greet a few world leaders), came to understand the extent of the Rajapakse DEEP STATE and military dictatorship’s facade of democracy in Sri Lanka.
The call of an international war crimes trial has now reached a crescendo and with the US the UK and Canada and others in the Commonwealth pushing hard to hold regime accountable. They know that if this does not happen the future of the Commonwealth and its legitimacy is at stake!

        Brilliant.

As a politician Cameron deserves it. In fact all politicians deserve abuse without exception.

I’m not too surprised. Just like in Australia and other well to do countries there are many with NIMBY attitude in Britain too. Australians are all for helping refugees as long as they don’t come to Australia. Brits are all for helping as long as its them who are being helped.

It is very rare to find people who are genuinely interested in helping others. That is why I liked Lady Diana; she was one genuinely kind hearted individual. In today’s materialistic and overcrowded world you are even less likely to come across these kinds of people.

“It is very clear there are a lot of people in Sri Lanka who are very happy to see their increasingly despotic ruling family coming under pressure.”

RW and MS of the UNP will be very happy to hear this. Fortunately both of them have not sired successors but have enough followers of their biological tradition.

    Callum Macrae

You became most hatred man in Sri Lanka , because of your partial reporting ,

Can you tell How many films did you make on following on war crimes ?
1.Killing of tens of thousands innocent by LTTE during 26 years long war ??

2.Of thousands poorest of poor fresh born babies/ children/ pregnant mothers/men hacked to death in border villages in their sleeping mat by LTTE?

3.Of 378 suicide explosions by LTTE in Sri Lanka out of some 425 in the whole world up to May, 19, 2009 ??

4.Of hundreds bomb explosions in Buses / Trains/ railway stations/bus terminals /market places/public gatherings/religious places by LTTE killing thousands of civilians ?

5.Taking some 250,000 innocent Tamils as “Human Shield” in last 03 months of war to protect LTTE “heroes” & killing hundreds of them mercilessly when they tried to escape & exposing them to danger of being killed in cross fire, by LTTE ??

      Idiot John,

Why should Callum Macrae make movies on a Terrorist organization that is banned in many countries including UK and is not in existance anymore other than a few leaders who are sleeping with the Rajapakshes?

Macrae hadn’t made any documentary on pathetic killing of unarmed Bin Laden and shooting his unarmed woman by the US seals. He hasn’t made any film on Al Quada suspects being held in Guantanamo Bay without charges after years of arrest. Bugger must be totally bias.

From Tsunami Jackpot to 10% 50% 100% Commission to Kasippu and Drug Mafia, Brothel and Casino Cartel to KP’s Gold everything comes down to Greenbacks.

Oh Callum, when you have gone through the long list that our JOHN has given you, could you also please find some time to tackle a few other episodes in our recent rich history…..

1 The JVP UPRISING of 1971. This was an uprising of disenchanted young men ‘taking matters into the own hands’ against the socialist-marxist government of Sirima Bandaranaike. Sirima turned to the old colonial master and other friends who promptly came to her aid (how to refuse a damsel in distress?) and the result was one almighty slaughter – thousandssss’ – of the lambs. All was very hush hush and nobody asked any damn impertinent questions. That was the GOSL’s FIRST taste of blood with no questions asked. Unfortunately NO mobile cameras were available to record those historic massacres.

2 Then the sequel JVP 2 – The INSURRECTION of 1987-89
This will be a blockbuster; sinister civil disobedience, assassinations, extra judicial killings, state-sponsored killings, violently-enforced hartals, imprisonment and torture and the dramatic capture and killing of the legendary leader of the JVP. This one will surely win an oscar. The heroic winner of this insurrection, our right-wing president Premadasa sought and obtained invaluable help from the UK and other ‘friends’. That was the GOSL’s SECOND taste of blood with no questions asked. Unfortunately again NO mobile cameras were available to record those historic events.

3 Ofcourse, ‘1958’ and ‘1983’ will be EPICS, bloody, gory and definitely unsuitable for family viewing. But much sadness and misery and truly the departure point for the great 26-YEAR WAR.

4 THE GREAT 26-YEAR WAR. How do you even start on this classic? The true everyman tale of the twisted DON QUIXOTE of our tropical island who won his spurs by intra-tribal killing and then visited mayhem on every part of our tribal paradise before progressive descent into hubris and a sort of undiagnosed insanity that forced him to lead his beleagured people into tribal suicide. The GOSL ended this long-running escapade with the aid of many ‘friends’ who they would rather not name; they closed the doors to nosy foreigners and let the boys loose on one helluva tiger shoot. Didn’t the tigers, tigresses and their cubs run; hither and thither, no fire zone, ceasefire zone, shock and awe zone, no surrender zone, no turning back zone, end-of-story zone. If not for the myriad innocent dead bodies this would have been a comedy. The laughing soldiers seemed to think so. So the GOSL walked away thinking THIRD TIME LUCKY. WRONG? Too much evidence had escaped, mobile phones had been invented and those pesky satellites were filming the evidence from up in the clouds. Worse, some of the evidence escaped to countries with an inquisitive press. DAMN, DAMN, thrice DAMN. But wait CHOGM….our annus mirabilis. This story will run and run……..and run.

Callum, may your cameras stay focussed.

The alleged linchpin of Sri Lanka’s biggest people-smuggling racket is a decorated Sri Lankan naval officer connected to an organisation formed by the son of a VVVVIP. I guess the patrol boats donated by Abbott to the Naval coast guard will come in very useful.

Unless ofcourse the patrol boats are to be used against the USD 2.3 billion Russian built Vikramaditya aircraft carrier inducted into the Indian Navy on Saturday.

“A Film Of Alleged War Crimes … How I Became Sri Lanka’s Most Hated Man”

Here the biggest problem is this Callum Kacrae is thinking that he is a great film Director like our great Film Directors Jackson Anthony, Somaratna Dissanayaka, Renuka Balasuriya and Prof. Sunil Ariyaratna etc.

This Callum Macrae just copied our Rana Viruwos in action and going around the world to get the attention while canvassing for Noble Price. ( For your kind Information next year Noble price for peace is already allocated for our Saddarmadveepa Chacrawarthi. so don’t waste your time on this matter)

He should have made a film like a king Walagamba, King Parakramabahu, king Mahinda the modern Chethiya and King Kakille to get the full attention from the Sri Lankan’s. They will never hate you for that kind of film.

Now your claim about following by our intel,

This is purely because we had some bitter experience with Lasantha Wickramathuna and 32 others as either they get killed themselves or killed by “Arayage Minissu”. Just to avoid that kind of unfortunate things they were following your team because our Intel still trying catch “Arayage Minissu” for that killings.

Also they wanted to make sure that you are not disappearing like Prageeth Eknaligoda and many others.

Our Intel were taking every precautions to avoid Assault from “Arayage Minissu” as they hate your kind of Journalists.

Finally our advise to you is at least from now onward try to follow our Media Giants like Malinda Seneviratna, Rajpal Abenayaka, Karunadasa Suriarachchi, Victor Ivan, Mahinda Abesundara, Gamini Sumanasekara, Thushara Gunaratna, Siri Ranasingha, Champika Liyana Nalawana Arachchi etc. and learn how to become a Independent, unbiased and brave Journalist.

In the Film Industry you are Just like a Baby and get advise from our great Film makers as we mentioned above to be a Great Film Director.

It is correct that CHOGM has become a PR disaster for the Rajapakses.

It is out of the question that the SL government will ever permit an independent international investigation into alleged war crimes.

It is no surprise that Gota’s hounds intimidate the Ch-4 team every step of the way; had this been a local team it would have “disappeared” and the bodies roasted in some remote jungle.

All this gives the show away about Rajapakse “democracy”.

    This statement is somewhat wrong.

You can say you are most hated by Rajapakse regime and its henchmen but not the general public in Sri Lanka, who are crying for justice, restoration of democracy, rule of law, independence of judiciary, press freedom and above all right to life with no fear.

Right now all this have been taken away in an environment where all organs of the government (legislature, judiciary, executive) and medi, are controlled under the firm grip of the tyrant, the great Machiavellian Rajapakse, who fearlessly run the show.

Please be aware that what you are doing cannot be appreciated by the people in public. You saw to your own eyes under what pressure the people of this country is living, under the rule of the despot Rajapakse.

Please take notice that always peoples’ appreciation is always there for the great service you and the BBC crew did for the people whose basic right to free speech also have been taken away with the fear psychosis inflicted in the people.

” Of course, the way for journalists to get to the truth is to go there and see for themselves. “

Macrae produced a docudrama of video clips, at least some of which are adamantly claimed to be fakes, and the originals of which appear on Utube before allegedly being voiced over. The time to seek the truth WAS before the production and release of the same and NOT now, long after it’s release in multiple countries as the ‘truth’. The LTTE rump who helped with the production of this docudrama (a few asylum-seeking Sinhala ‘journalists’ helped too evidently) can’t help but wet their knickers with laughter.
If Macrae, Miller and Snow had expected a different kind of welcome in Sri Lanka they soon realised how utterly disliked they were by the locals. Miller was under the illusion that the Macrae ‘film’ was more important than the terror they had suffered collectively at the hands of the Ch 4 heroes, the LTTE terrorists.
If one describes Jon Snow as a journalist then the assumption must be that he and Judith Miller (of Curveball notoriety) is of the same stock. He is very adept at using the language of the LTTE such as the ‘military occupation’ (within Sri Lanka), a ‘100000 disappeared’ (originating with the terrorist in a cassock), and the fantasy of ‘the homeland’ in parts of the country where they had arrived at and lived for a mere couple of centuries, and make up 30% of the population. True that the attempt was made to make it a 100% Tamil enclave by genocide, and openly ethnically cleansing the area of Muslims and Sinhala by terror, but the result is well known. The security forces long brain-washed by the West into thinking that this was NOT a fight they could win, exerted it’s authority on all of Sri Lanka.
Macrae also asserted on NDTV that he was not part of a Western plot and that he had produced documentaries on the the illegal war on Iraq, but the evidence for this is lacking. The ‘team’ was NOT in Sri Lanka by invitation, but had obtained a visa by coercion, to cover CHOGM, a visa that was denied to them by India. Ch 4 became known as the Voice of the LTTE rump, quite deservedly, in Sri Lanka.

“Macrae produced a docudrama of video clips, at least some of which are adamantly claimed to be fakes,”

      Which part?

“The time to seek the truth WAS before the production and release of the same and NOT now”

The time to seek the truth was before the crime scene was wiped clean by the perpetrators. It was a war without witness, a practice picked up from the Americans.

Even now relatives and victims are banned from telling their stories. Worse they are banned from grieving their lost husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters,……..

I am not talking about just Tamils but the Southern Sinhalese as well.

Pick up your bump from your comfortable sofa and visit North South East and West, speak to the relatives and victims.

You will find out lot more than what you have seen on TV. If you are not mad like Gota by the time you leave this island you will be changed enlightened man/woman.

Except for those who supported the tigers plus a few self loathing Sinhalese plus a very few honestly fooled, majority of Sri Lankans hate you.

Sri Lankans hate you bc we never saw a Callum Macrae when we were suffering from a decades long war and then when we finally ended the conflict ourselves you self righteous bitch had the nerve the question the way we ended the conflict. The hypocrite who never called for war crimes probes against Blair called for the same against our political leaders. The hypocrite who never asked to boycott UK for invading a sovereign nation campaigned to boycott Sri Lanka for self defending. The list could continue but a selfish sadist like this man does not deserve much time.

    Our sincere thanks for channel 4 team for bringing out to the whole world of what was the status of the freedom of speech, freedom of movement and the pathetic state how the affected people in the north ;
Pl read the tamil newspapers from jaffna —
    whole of northern media is full of praise for you on behalf of the people there— you should have visited eastern province and vanni too;

    the people who were evicted from their homes and living wth great hardships in camps for nearly 25 years were doing a protest fast in the north– and they were very upset that the brtish pm could not visit them;

as you have rightly mentioned, if the govt is genuine and has nothing to hide, then why not they let your team to visit anywhere you want to go ?????
rajapakshas with blood stained hands will never do it.

hats off to channel 4 — you were the real heroes of this CHOGM.

Thanks for putting your time to help SL.

If you follow this site, you would notice that, recently Gota or MR axs. lickers with names like, Max, Fukushima, Sumane posting foolish comments in this web site very frequently, simply bombarding with foolish comments. I don’t know whether you are telling the truth, nothing but the truth but……there definitely is some truth in what you are saying.
The proof is how your stay here has been handled by the state and especially M.I.
You can be proud that you made world aware of high handedness of our government by coming here and going through the ordeal .
There is nothing much you can do if the Srilankans don’t want to believe what they see…..proof why people here vote for the scoundrels.
I have no respect for the BTF or TETG or any other LTTE apologists, they are just a bunch of tamils doling out the same treatment to their own people that we the sinhalese are getting from the Rajapaksa Inc.

in a Lighter vein I must tell you that, on top of the tab the poor commoner in Srilanka is taking for hosting CHOGM we also will pay for all those people who demonstrated against you in different parts of the country, the intelligence types who followed you day in day out etc…

So you can say thank you to the poor man on the streets of Srilanka who are eagerly awaiting their 2014 budget proposals on coming Thursday.

Mr. Macrae, by harassing and trying to intimidate you, they are doing exactly what they have been accused of, stifling investigations, silencing the media, and those who bring attention to their crimes, and their actions during CHOGM against any leader, media, or international body, that wants the world to focus on what the regime is trying to get away with, only proves those accusations are valid.
They have this nasty habit of attacking the messenger, accusing everyone who disagrees with them, LTTE sympathizers, and pointing to unconnected reasons as to why they should not speak out.
This is in no way democracy. It is well known that video footages that show the disgusting war crimes, can be ruled out as fake very easily, but it serves them well to keep whining it is fake, and keep the personal attacks going. The world is not ignorant or blind. The rajapaksa regime is cornered, and striking out in desperate attempts. to silence people brave enough to question them.
There are many who agree with you, but too afraid to speak out. If the regime had nothing to hide, I am sure they would have welcomed ANY investigation, but instead we can see them being too defensive, stalling, and getting their servants to attack the messengers.
Good luck, perhaps when the world decides to take measures against human rights abuses, going on even now, you will feel justified in your message.

Everyone knows Man bites dog is news but dog bites man is not. The world media is out to publish matters that they commonly relate to. CH4 has a strong Branch in this aspect in their work. The LTTE or its rump need not be blamed.

The army with its mobile vedio clips took the available opportunity to
make money and the first TV station approached would have gone all out
to make capital of it – to the extent that they were Nobel prize winners in this category. Future output is possible.

If the State wanted the clips relegated as fakes, they should have offered a larger sum and bought them off the army via their PR Agents in UK in secret and tested same and published their independently
verifiable Analysis. Instead of taking this obvious step just ignoring
it or refuting it saying give us the originals to check. CH4 would not
foolishly disclose its source, as the army men who sold them risk
their life for sure. Should an International Inquiry come, these
originals will be gladly presented in addition to so much of
photographic evidence held in secret for 4 years now.

The LLRC knows the truth on this evidence, so much so they had to
be briefed by the SL Expert “in camera”. This alone concludes that
the State has no counter-evidence and the alternative is to “kill”
you – the messanger, in keeping with its local standards of those
involved – the culprits in charge here.
These chilling video scenes will haunt any human for life. Truth and
Justice WILL prevail some time ahead, is my prayers.
