A Janus Moment

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“A wandering fire at a terrible height –

can it be a star shining like that? ~ Osip Mandelstam (Poem 101)

A walking path bordered by the sea and a bit of lawn with few struggling saplings; a ‘marina’ sans yacht or boat (like that airport with no planes). Port City Marina Promenade, inaugurated in January 2022 by President Gotabaya, PM Mahinda and Chinese foreign minister, became an instant wonder. Almost 90,000 people visited it one week.

In January 2022, as masses thronged a sea-path masquerading as a marina, the economy was crumbling, gas and milk powder queues had begun, and poverty and unemployment were accelerating. Yet there was no demand for the Rajapaksas to go. According to an IHP tracking poll, Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s favourability ratings were high still, higher than Sajith Premadasa’s or Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s. If the anonymous social media campaign which kicked off one of the most successful popular resistance movements of the century had begun in January instead of April, it would have flopped.

Struggles and seasons. Gangodawila Soma Thero, who unleashed two waves of noxious majoritarian-supremacism, against Muslims and Christians, died because he was imprudent enough to visit St. Petersburg in the dead of winter without warm clothes. Sometimes, timing is everything. A few months can mean the difference between success and failure, life and death. When Gota-go-home demand premiered in late March, a majority of Lankans were experiencing the economic calamity and knew who its authors were. According to a CPA survey, 90% said their income or income of an immediate family member has been affected and almost 90% wanted President Gotabaya and his family gone.

Newton’s third law says there’s an equal and opposite reaction to every action. In politics too, though the reaction is rarely equal. When Mahinda Rajapaksa’s thugs attacked Gota-go-gama, there was an outpouring of public outrage which turned violent within hours. The murder and the arson sprouted from the ground, an execrable yet popular reaction to an unbearable economic reality. The JVP and the FSP are not known for their love for animals; only an authentic mob would have spared SB Dissanayake’s house because they found his dog’s antics cute.

After the May upheavals, the public mood took an opposite turn settling into a wait-and-see attitude. Had the call to descend on Colombo been on June 9th, it would drawn a few thousands, not a million. By July 9th the faint hope generated by the facile changes of May days was dead. The time was right.

The president’s house was occupied. The president fled. Had the protesters stopped with that, today would have been a different – and a better – day. The occupation of the Temple Trees was unnecessary; the occupation of the presidential secretariat and the prime minister’s office wrong. The burning of Ranil Wickremesinghe private residence was a horrendous crime; anyone who loves books would know what was lost in that fire. The leading figures of the Aragalaya should have codenamed that crime immediately and unequivocally. They didn’t, anymore than they condemned the reactive-violence of May days, including the brutal lynching of two men in Nittambuwa. A disturbing sign of what the Aragalaya shares with the Rajapaksas: a belief in one’s infallibility, intolerance of criticism, equation of disagreement with betrayal. Not a formula for greater democracy.

From those avoidable crimes another avoidable crime was born, the pre-dawn attack by police and armed-to-the-teeth military on unarmed Galle Face protestors. An act of brutal repression that tarnishes national image and bodes ill for the future.

In his essay collection, The King and the Ants, Zbigkniew Herbert compares Atlas to our world’s suffering masses who endure in immoveable anger up to a point, until they move. On the 9th of April, May, and July, the people moved. That was why the Rajapaksas couldn’t unleash brute force. Now, people are back to the Atlas mode, enduring. With the semi-restoration of gas supply, they see a silver lining. They’d wait and watch to determine whether that line brings dawn or not. If not, they will move again in their anger. But that time is not now. This is the wrong season for A las barricadas.

Any organised reaction to the brutal attack on Galle Face protestors must bear this reality in mind. Attempts to rouse the masses will fail. Only a small group of committed protestors will heed the call. They will find themselves alone without popular support facing a military well-versed in turning guns on unarmed civilians.

Stability or Chaos?

The American ambassador called the attack on unarmed protestors unnecessary and she was spot on. The protestors had agreed to leave the next day. They should have been given time to do so. If they didn’t honour their promise, the judicial path should have been taken, via a court order. Instead the military was sent in with enough of a free-hand to re-enact a tiny bit of their wartime modus operandi. Media personnel were attacked, including a BBC journalist. Even Suwaseriya ambulances were banned from coming in. Like taking a meat cleaver where a scalpel was needed.

Now the Nandikadal Man has been reappointed as defence secretary, another bad omen. But a repeat performance is likely to cost the government and the country dear. The EU is on record warning that the 70million euro GSP facility is at stake. Since wanton displays of force breed not stability but its opposite, even a delay in the IMF deal is possible. And no, China can’t (given its own mounting financial woes) and won’t fill the gap. The most Beijing would do is to lend us enough money to service their loans. Not a dollar extra.

If there is a lesson to be learnt from the Rajapaksas’ fall, it’s the danger of unenlightened self-interest. The Rajapaksas didn’t know when to stop, even to save themselves. When July 9th burst in on President Gotabaya he was busy with plans to replace tactical ally Ranil Wickremesinghe with a reliable pawn. On June 9th, while announcing his resignation, Basil Rajapaksa publicly asked the president to appoint a SLPP member as the PM. Within days, oligarch Dhammika Perera paid his back taxes and joined the SLPP. On June 22nd he became a member of parliament. On June 24th he was given the super-ministry tailor-made for him, complete with seven key institutions, including BOI, Port City Commission, and the immigration and emigration department. On July 6th, he called a press conference and read out a prepared statement titled, Sri Lanka’s finance minister’s plan for disaster, and demanded Ranil Wickremesinghe resignation from finance ministry. On July 8th, President Gotabaya presented Mr. Perera with three more institutions, including Rakna Lanka and Selendiva.

As DBS Jeyaraj wrote using the fable of frog and scorpion, the scorpion was about to strike the frog dead. Then came the wave, sweeping away the scorpion and saving the frog.

The people wanted Rajapaksas gone because the family was responsible for our economic calamity. The Ranil-go-home demand came not from the masses, but from protest-activists and opposition parties. That demand, however popular in the political circles, never gained traction with the people because Mr. Wickremesinghe bears no responsibility for the current economic tsunami. While his performance as President Gotabaya PM was far from inspiring, it was obvious to anyone not blinded by Ranil-phobia that the Rajapaksas were undermining their supposed saviour at every turn.

Now Mr. Wickremesinghe is on his own. He is on probation. If he manages to ensure continued supply of fuel and gas, he will survive. But if any more unwarranted display of force causes an international backlash, such as the loss of GSP facility, the general public will begin to see him not as an asset but a liability. As international reactions worsen economic woes, Ranil-go-home cry will gain in popularity.

The attack on Galle Face protestors worked because the people are back in the Atlas mode, holding their anger in check, waiting to see how the new president performs. But if he fails, Atlas will begin to move again. When that happens, brute force will not work. The SLPP part of the administration will side with the protestors, the Nandikadal Man will rein in the military, and Ranil Wickremesinghe will be faced with his own July 9th. That confirmed Rajapaksa acolyte, Dinesh Gunawardane, will become the interim president. The return of the Rajapaksas will begin, just months after their ignominious departure.

None of this is inevitable, not yet. President Wickremesinghe can allow emergency to lapse and ensure that force is not reused against peaceful protestors. The best response to his critics would be to keep his own public promises. Abolish the 20th Amendment, reinstate the 19th Amendment; appoint a new PM and a cabinet consisting of the most competent and least toxic parliamentarians, and begin the process of abolishing the executive presidency. In tandem, implement the new social safety net that has been “drawn up by a diverse group of activists and policy wonks (and) enjoys broad support even among members of the opposition,” according to The Economist.

Opposition, Aragalaya and the Executive Presidency

When he took oaths as president in 2015, Maithripala Sirisena pledged to the nation that he will be the last executive president of Sri Lanka. Had that promise been kept, there would have been no presidential election in 2019 and no President Gotabaya to unleash his economic blitzkrieg on Sri Lanka.

44 years of executive presidency has failed to deliver on any of its promises. Now, 70% of Lankans want the executive presidency gone, according to a survey by Verite Research. Only 15% want its retention. This gives the opposition a genuinely popular demand to centre its actions around. Instead of asking President Wickremesinghe to go home, which he can afford to ignore as it has no popular support yet, the opposition can hold hum to his own promises. Defang the presidency with the reinstitution of the 19th Amendment; drive a stake through its heart with the 21st Amendment. If a two-thirds majority in parliament is in doubt, go for a referendum first, coupling it with the next national level election be it local government, provincial or parliamentary. Once the abolition is approved by the people, the parliamentarians will have to go along.

Clinging to Ranil-phobia is bad tactics. It has already caused enough damage – to the opposition. It enabled the obscene travesty of making Dulles Alahapperuma – a Rajapaksa acolyte for over 25 years, candidate Gotabaya’s chief media spokesman, and a minister in the regime that brought Sri Lanka to this pass – the standard bearer of the anti-Rajapaksa camp. A man who didn’t utter a whimper about tax cuts, money printing, fertiliser fiasco, or 20th Amendment became more anti-Rajapaksa than Ranil Wickremesinghe who had opposed every one of those disasters. And if Ranil Wickremesinghe was backed by Basil Rajapaksa, Dulles Alahapperuma was backed by Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the former president revealed. The dice was loaded as it would be in any Rajapaksa game.

Once Gotabaya fled, the opposition should have used a national list slot to bring a reputable outsider into parliament as a common presidential candidate. That person might have still lost, yet the fight would have been a genuine one not a sham.

The rehabilitation of the Rajapaksas by their onetime acolytes has already got off the ground with Omalpe Sobhita Thero praising Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s restraint towards the protestors. The Rajapaksas practiced restraint only because the swelling tide of mass opposition left them with little choice. And while at it, let us remember how Rajapaksas responded to protests in the south when they not hated. Like Rathupaswala; the military firing on peaceful villagers protesting about the polluting practices of a factory owned by a company owned by Dhammika Perera. Three people died including a school student watching from the sidelines. That was what the Rajapaksas would have done had Gota-go-home protests begun prematurely in January instead of April, before long power cuts and fuel queues impacted on lives and changed minds.

In Book One of Fasti, Ovid, introducing Janus, says, “Every doorway has two sides…” July 9th opened such a doorway which can lead either to a kind of recovery or unmitigated disaster. According to the World Food Programme, more than a quarter of Lankan people lack enough to eat and millions more do not eat enough. Even an all-party government may not be able to reverse this trend before it wipes out even single health, educational, and social achievements of the last 74 years. Without such a united effort that monumental task cannot even be undertaken. This means restraint on all sides, government, first and foremost, and the opposition.

Artist Sujith Ratnayake (who ran the art gallery in Gota-go-gama), in an illuminating commentary states that the youthful protestors clung on to presidential secretariat because they didn’t understand the difference between state and government, and thought state meant Rajapaksas or Ranil Wickremesinghe. At the same time a terrifying revelation of the political illiteracy of these young rebels and a sad reflection on their political innocence. They deserve life, not an early grave and a brief

“The Ranil-go-home demand came not from the masses, but from protest-activists and opposition parties….A man (Dullas) who didn’t utter a whimper about tax cuts, money printing, fertiliser fiasco, or 20th Amendment became more anti-Rajapaksa than Ranil Wickremesinghe who had opposed every one of those disasters.
I don’t the above reasoning would satisfy the sentimental souls who wanted Dullas to win.
“(If protests go on) Ranil Wickremesinghe will be faced with his own July 9th. That confirmed Rajapaksa acolyte, Dinesh Gunawardane, will become the interim president.”
Is that really what the Aragalaya (or those who claim to be) want? Think again, people. I suggest you hold your noses and take what’s available. A bird in the hand……

Aragalaya is not a political constant.
It was set in motion by serious concerns, and ‘Go home Gota’ was only a catchphrase. Corruption and abuse of power by the family were matters around which people rallied.
Realization that the parliament itself is flawed came next. Subsequent demands for changes to the constitution etc. were to be expected. But quick delivery was another matter.
May 9th exposed those seeking a free ride on Aragalaya to gain power. They wanted Aragalaya to stop at bringing them to power but keeping all else the same.
There was all along doubts about the credentials of the big sponsors as well. Events since May 9th began to transform the Aragalaya, and the changes are ongoing.
It could spread across the country and become a force for radical change. But that is a slow process that require politicization of the masses.
To expect quick delivery of any major goal even short of a system change is not being clever.
Dislodging the Rajapaksas is not easy. It demands sustained hard work.
Those who wanted quick fixes are frustrated and bitter.

Thisaranee: Which planet are you living on?! Ranil Rajapakse is the name of the US -backed Regime that came to power in a Regime Change operation to deliver Sri Lanka to the IMF which works for the Global 1 percent and bails out US-EU Vulture Funds like BlackRock . US-based BlackRock has the biggest portion of Sri Lanka’s International Sovereign Bonds (ISB) debt and cause the DEFAULT and currency depreciation- all staged!
The protestors know that Ranil and Rajapakse are collaborators and the US game is “heads I win, tails, you loose”. The CIA and NED have spread their tentacles through the body politic of the island including well funded paid for Civil Society ! It is an American Virus manufactured through Gain of Function research and deadlier than Covid-19 that has enabled US backed Dictator RW to cease power!

        old codger,
How easy is it to get the wrong impression of a man … .
My judgement of you is now proved to be wrong.
Your judgement of Ranil will be not any different!

Aragalaya is a demand to arrest the collapse of our country. IT was not against a particular individual or two. It was against a their practices.

Ranil needs a good riot, in order to prove his machismo.

It is quite easy to recruit Cyrils, Duttas, …. among the 225.

          What is he waiting for?

I have always been consistent. RW is the best of a bad lot. Who else has as much experience in government? Only the Rajapaksas and their clownish acolytes. Many of the other likely leaders are not Buddhist or even Sinhala, so they would face even more opposition than RW. Sarath Fonseka and Champika Ranawaka are opportunistic racists. Premadasa Jr. Is an empty windbag. If you have better candidates, please feel free to suggest. My position is that perfection is unattainable. RW with all his warts is much preferable to the Rajapaksas.

            Dear old codger,
            .
I have always had the highest respect for you. I have been willing to accept your argument that the Bond Scam wasn’t as bad as some thought it was.
            .
However, what Ranil has been doing during the past three months is loathsome.
            .
We still have with us some pretty disgusting fellows: S.B. Dissanayake, Wimal Weerawansa, and Mervyn Silva. Thankfully, this guy, who sold Mervyn his PhD, is no more, but I’ve been finding that his followers are continuing to defraud:

        Ranil is the accidental president.
Could he not find and appoint untainted MPs to ministry or a non racist as Prime minister??

In fact is it so difficult to appoint a civilian to the post of Defense Secretary. Does Ranil believe a bigoted thug could do a better job as Defense Secretary than civilian?

Well Ranil had an opportunity to reverse all what has been happening in this island. No leader has the b***s to stop digging.

I think these guys will be much less racist under Ranil. It depends who is leading. When there was an “organic” idiot at the top, they were all organic to a man. When the idiot wanted to cremate Muslims, nobody demurred. Now they’ll do anything that Ranil says.

            I doubt it.
Please study carefully every statement emanating from SLPP camp.
The Prince of Darkness Weerasekere wants to deny protesters the opportunity to apply for government jobs and will be banned from travelling abroad ( SJ’s golden Era, during Siri Mao’s Exit Visa regime).

Wimal Sangili Karuppan Weerawansa has information which points to the facts that Diaspora is going to send an Army to divide the country, working towards a mother of all riots against Tamils and Sinhalese.

Some SLPP MPs and ministers believe ear ring wearing protesters are dealing in drugs and too dangerous.
Some of them also want to re-empower the crooks with power.

        SM,
I am a realist. Who are the alternatives? The most obvious guy, with the best team, Sajith, is pussy-footing.
Many do NOT understand the situation the country is in. We are bankrupt. Revolutions are very nice, and it would be very nice to “sweep away the 225”. But what next?
There are worse things than what is happening now. Do we want to be like Libya, with a different government in every city? With warlords telling us what to do? Do we want mass starvation as in Sudan? Do we want millions of refugees fleeing? I don’t think you do.
Basically, nobody will give us money unless there is stability. Ranil is not the one who bankrupted the country in two years with utter stupidity. It was the Rajapakses. This is not the time for idealism. It is not Ranil I am supporting. It is the country’s future. Perhaps I have too much foresight, not a lack of it.
As someone wrote, “when my child is dying, I will seek help even from my worst enemy “

Political coups are now very frequent and no one is able to predict what will happen even tomorrow in this island. Even Gota may come tomorrow and take over again because now all the anger is against Ranil. One thing that didn’t change is the parliament still got the majority by SLPP and Ranil is the President for those SLPP members who are Mahinda’s favourits. Even Ranils life is under their control. Ranil told us he had 45 years of experience but Mahinda has 50 years of experience. Today, there was a news item that is in 2007 Ranil asked Japan to not help this country when he was a opposition leader.
One thing We can predict that the country was never in peace and it will never in peace.

Ranil W had been playing nasty politics for nearly 5 decades. 1977 & 1983 Riots happened during the UNP regime. In 2015, He could have brought court cases against all the Rajapaksas. But he failed to do so.
Since 2015 a new constitution has been drafted. It’s TIME to put it for referendum. Citizens of SL can not hope to get out of the current economic and political crises as long as the corrupted SLPP members are in the Parliament /Government

Naman: “He could have brought court cases against all the Rajapaksas. But he failed to do so”. NO. You are wrong. Not that he failed, but very scrumptiously and by design saw to that all cases would fail in courts. Remember, how several cases numbering 44 or so were “Withdrawn” by the AG and the Bribery Commission because of “TECHNICAL ERRORS” made in filing those cases. Have you ever heard of such a number of “Technical Errors” being made by “Top Notch” Law Enforcement Divisions in a country? All those “Technical Errors” were made deliberately to get the Rajapaksas off the hook by Ranil W during the “Yahapalanaya”. Now the Rajapaksas are compensating Ranil W for all the favors. Simple as that.

“1977 & 1983 Riots happened during the UNP regime. “
Would it implicate Ranil? Then it should implicate many more more deservedly.
You don’t even remember when he was really bad, and I will let you have a guess.
Are you sure that Ranil was solely responsible for not bringing cases against all the Rajapaksas. I am not exonerating him of his faults, but the Yahapalanaya was an alliance in which one partner had much to lose by any such step.
Also, we forget that parliamentary politics is somewhat like a friendly game of cricket. Nobody means to hurt another— exception being the vindictive JRJ.

Summary truth of the matter is: Sri Lanka was born as a Sinhalese Buddhist Majoritarian ‘democracy’ handed over to the wretched incompetent Sinhalese leaders on a platter and they kept the Sinhalese Buddhist hegemony over the island rolling for 74 years, and it is alive and kicking.

Gota slashed the taxes of the wealthy, who are his buddies. Worldwide inflation is taking the toll on the poor worldwide. Sinhalese leaders borrowed abroad to the hilt to spite by cutting the (Tamil) nose: They never realized that it will turn out to be the noose around their necks! They celebrated killing innocent Tamils with milk-rice.

Open inflation is sky high in Sri Lanka, aggravated by hidden inflation like standing in queues, waiting for fuel, electricity, water etc. for days: These are burdensome regressive taxes on the the poor, while the rich are enjoying the tax cuts with some minor inconvenience with Gota’s blessing.

It’s a pity that this beautiful island cannot produce an enlightened Sinhalese leader to bring peace, prosperity and progress to its peoples.

So, Sri Lanka is ‘fated’ to muddle along as an underdeveloped country for ever.

Does CT publish a secret edition for select readers? If so, very naughty,

      Dear Thiru,
      .
I’m happy that you are honest about your dislikes; you are entitled to harbour them.
      .
However, I do pay careful attention to what Kumar David, Rajan Philips and Ameer Ali say. I also found the late Izzeth Hussain very interesting. I have contact details for all, but I have yet to meet Ameer.
      .
I’ve known about Tisaranee for a long time, but I’ve been reading her only for about ten years. Wonderful writing. I wish I knew what she looks like, though. No consistency in CT policy in this regard. It doesn’t depend on how distinguished a person is. Kumar David is so even tempered and tolerant, he’d accede to almost any request.
      .
With mention of Gnana Akka’s prophecies, I lose respect for Thiru! The others make worthwhile predictions on worthwhile matters. So does Dayan Jayatilaka, but he changes tack so often that I don’t read him usually. I haven’t ever met him, but when I was travelling week-ends to Aquinas for GAQ, I used to stay in an upstairs flat that my sisters were running in Ward Place. Dayan’s parents were downstairs; I’d have liked to meet them, but Colombo folk observe strange taboos.

I am reminded of the massive election poster by the Tories of Tony Blair with a pair of demonic red eyes and the slogan “New Labour New Danger” (produced by Maurice Saatchi’s advertising agency), when faced with the threat of a Labour landslide in 1997 and the end of Tory rule in Britain, .
It was then denounced as the “most notorious political advertisements of recent times”
    *
I am no admirer of Blair or Ranil W, but think that the author has more than matched Maurice Saatchi for bad taste.

      SJ,

I have seen this picture posted on Twitter by others belonging to the Aragalaya. So I think CT editors might have taken it from somewhere; you are jumping the gun on blaming TG. Anyway, in the prevailing situation where RW acts as an extension of MR/GR and their SLPP gang, angry youths producing such visuals is hardly comparable to old right-wing propaganda in the UK.

Has she objected to CT about the image and the caption?
Decency demands so if it was not her intention.
        Have you protested to CT?
I objected to an uncouth act– not about anyone.
That may be because I, unlike someone who you and I know well, am not in the habit of ruling on who should be lynched.

Sri Lanka is beautiful with some great people and lots of evil racist low level people. How do we get this country to move forward and think with an open mind? It got to start with the education system and the books which teaches about how Gemnunu could not sleep because of the Tamils. At the age of 5 they are teaching the hatred of Tamils. That got to stop. The teaching should be how we all can get together and how we all can live together, This will bring unity is 20 years from now. Its a long process. One the Sinhalese stop the hate and teach the Tamils to stop the hate. Sl will become a great nation. 2nd part is never elect a politician with out a degree from the university. Politicians should give 5 solid points they promise to get done. In 5 years its not done do not vote for him. All 5 points should be betterment of the nation not a sector of people or person. Do you think we can do this? I talked to many people they say it is not possible because we do not have an open minded leader in Sri Lanka. Ranil and all 225 should not be re elected. They should be sent home. WIll SL people vote for good smart open minded people?

      Kalay,
      .
I agree that the Gemunu story should not be taught to kids. Teach something based on this (which I have not read, because I can’ get hold of it.)
      .
      https://tamilnation.org/books/eelam/indrapala
      .
Only don’t talk about the evolution of the Tamils alone, but how the people living in Lanka (let both the diaspora also be included) evolved. Examination of the contents of that review shows that Indrapala has, in fact, done that.
      .
It will be “a long process.”
      .
After agreeing to that what are these things that you stipulate should happen? Don’t sloganise, please. Are you going to legislate to keep out all 225+1? You’re being lazy. I have a university degree, but are you really going to prescribe that? A degree is no qualification that a person is competent, and there are other qualifications. We have to accept those who are elected. Certainly suggest to all voters that they should give deep “THOUGHT“. Do you really give such advice to all whom you meet? I do, whenever there is a captive audience. I don’t prescribe people, but I reveal my preferences. Insist on transparency; be strict about lies!
      .
I’m sure that there are suitable people. How to make them electable?

        SM,
You are right. A degree is not an assurance of integrity or even intelligence.
G.L. Pieris has an Oxford degree, as SWRD did. JR, and even SB Dissanayake and many of the Viyathmaga have degrees.
A degree counts for nothing if, from the age of 5, children are brainwashed with racism. The Mahavamsa can be taught at University level if necessary. Why should such a racist tract be taught to innocent children when the spicy bits of the Vinaya Pitakaya are not known even to many adults? The education system has to change first, and that includes the Dhamma schools. But all this will meet a lot of resistance and take a generation.

Many people did not agree with requiring University degree. You must have one way to measure the candidate. The people who have a degree always ( 60%) willing to listen and engage. If a person who is a drop out and did not finish the S School Certificate might not be the best to represent due to high level documents to be red, analyzed and debated. Think about people must have the ability to read and comprehend and respond. Other wise they will be following the party leader and close their eyes and vote. That is where we fail. We need all 225 to engage.
Current 225+1 must go. I am sure there is a young Sri Lankan who can speak very eloquently and convince the people. This person should be able to speak in 3 languages. Give the people a solid path what can be done and how can it be done. Only a well-educated person can do this.
Talking about three languages, get rid of all the road signs in Chinese and replace with Tamil. We should only have three language signs (Sinhala, Tamil, and English). Why do we have to have Chinese signs? Gotta wants to please the Chinese so they can give more loan so he can get 20% cut of it. That’s how he owns 3 houses in California.

The worth of a person ought never to be reduced to qualifications flaunted. However, for some jobs qualifications ought to be stipulated; once that is done, such qualifications must be insisted upon.
          .
OTOH, if people are elected to office, then what has to be insisted upon has to be clean and fair election; all gets muddled if a qualification is also asked for. But listing disqualifications is rational enough. Convicted murderers ought not to be employed by the State until their sentence has been served; after that such people ought to be rehabilitated. If sentenced to death, and pardoned (Duminda Silva or Jayamaha)? Set at liberty is generous, but give them plum jobs? Free on appeal? Can still be MP for Ratnapura.
          .
Qualifications? How can quality be maintained when Gota ordered upping University intake by 10,000 a year without thinking of the availability of lecturers. Cheating can take various forms:

          Dear Kalay and Mahila,
          .
The above were random jottings, but some tongue in cheek things have got said. Some of it may be interesting/ shocking if you have the time.
          .
But oddities aside Mahila, this answers something you once asked me.
          .
We have three languages in this country, and our policy must be to promote trilingualism. However, nothing will get done if we decide to say “off with their heads” if certain standards aren’t reached. What we should be concerned about is the ability to use languages.
          .
In England only one language is relevant. How well Rishi Sunak uses it. Prime Ministership almost within his reach, but September will reveal him to be second:
          .
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pf-WPsYE1s
          .
In Lanka, we need three: Shanakiyan Rasamanikkam, our Prime Minister some day, with Executive Presidency abolished? Accents are controversial things, but I’d risk saying his Sinhala and English are flawless. I was wondering about R Sampanthan. Found a minute here:

Perfect. Sumanthiran is commendable and effective, but his Sinhalese sounds Tamil! Many Muslims are trilingual, but the Sinhalese, pathetic! I have heard AKD use only Sinhalese; but I’m happy with his attitudes.

“I have never found anything to excite the people in quite the way this language issue does”–– Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike to a journalist.

The above approach was why Sunethra was Candid enough to say recently in an interview that her father was wrong. Right now the nation’s future is more than ever in the past.
Yes, the country is beautiful with lots of lovely people who also mix well when left alone.

Fakecultrebug: You say “Sunethra was candid enough to say…….that her father was wrong”. This is yet another “Political Game Culture” recently brought in to hoodwink the people. The Leaders commit all the “Crimes” and when exposed come and tell: “Yes it was a mistake” by which time all the curse has fallen on the people. Wasn’t this “Drama” staged by Gotabaya recently when he said about his decision to stop the use of chemical fertilizer in agriculture? Even Ranil W would say: ” Yes it was a mistake to have used the Armed Forces to bring down the “Aragalaya” as and when confronted by the International Community”. Are we or should we condone and tolerate such “Leaders”? No, they should be seriously dealt with for such “CRIMES”.

“Yes it was a mistake” by which time all the curse has fallen on the people.”
        ====
What is the curse fallen on the people by introducing Sinhala, the language spoken by indigenous Sinhalayo as the official language?
The curse was fallen on Sinhalayo when British discarded Sinhala which has been the official language for thousands of years in this country and introduced English as the official language which was spoken less than 2% of the people.

          Blind eagle!!
True it is 2% of the sri Lankan population (that may be contentious and contestable) wit so many international schools operational for 40+ years in this country!!
Internationally, the percentage of English speakers are more – universally spoken language – and present day research papers and intellectual material??!!
Our ruler’s sent their children overseas financed by ‘corrupt funding’, depriving Sri Lankans the knowledge base to advance in life??!!
          Klept•oc•racy??!!
          No??
Do you have a better word to explain that phenomenon??!!

Simon—Agree in full with you. My point was merely to say that some have the correct thinking at least!
Accountability political and financial is due and tracking money lost to the country is another story if dispersed to proxy asset holders in unregulated countries is a forensic investigators playbook / future leaders political will.
You may have observed even on this site that often thinking has variants.

One lot believes in majoritarian rule while another justifies primacy and claims first arrival of their race themselves living in western democracies. Both are unacceptable to the international community and the island nation can choose to isolate markets. As for the later it is going to be disputed if the pages of history were from a convenient point to the proponent and turned back further by the opponent when this country was part of a southern subcontinent!! Some think a military solution does it, but history proves otherwise. Time alone will tell as shouting at home is a juvenile tantrum.
A Colombo professor once told me that Colonies had to go through this and Singapore learnt faster due to strict legislature.

For avoidance of doubt I do not wish to go backwards but forewrds, being cosmopolitan, I believe unhindered freedom of movement within the country for all. In my view its power, vote catching and a few lackeys who benefit or are skewed with personal hangups who will cause the rift and a downward spiral.

      (Part I)
      Fakeculturebug,
“I have never found anything to excite the people in quite the way this language issue does”–– ‘Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike’
The ‘genie’ captured in the magic bottle was released in 1950’s to win an election by this Oxford educated Genius of a Sinhalese leader, whose only objective was to become the PM of the country, winning over the UNP to self-serve, without consideration of the National Interest??!!
It was very unfortunate that he was killed by an assassin who has lost his mind and the ideals of his pursuit to enlightenment, at which point his spouse came to power, promising to pursue his (SWRDB’s) policies, which I am sure she had no deep understanding, except what was fed to her by her (specifically SWRDB’s Nephew) and others in the party??!!
Left herself, she would have performed better, because as an individual, she was a considerate, selfless person unmatched in quality and outlook, being a ‘Ratwatte’. Not to be because – Politics!!
They mesmerised majoritarian public, continued misdirected policies and actions necessitated to pursue their “ideal and objective”, oppressing protests and enforcing language and religious belief on people, to whom especially the minorities, it was an anathema.

      (Part II)
None was the Majoritarian concern??!! Game plan continued and then came University entrance (50 years ago) on “Standardisation”, originally mooted to overcome limited slots and infrastructure UNDER CAPACITY??!! Minorities, who would have earlier got Uni Slots were marginalised/ discriminated and left the country in ‘droves’ in the 1970’s to overseas locations and plush prospects!!??
Majoritarianism was so highly percolated, during my time in the undergraduate studies, there were many instances, I have heard the gloating by Majoritarian sects that their (Minorities) departing overseas was indeed good??!! Th country would become more belonging to the majoritarian community!!?? Fool hardy!!
None were interested – all the nationalists and particularly ‘Cardboard’ and ‘Cut-out’ pseudo patriots – calling others traitors, if they raised that particular issue at any time??!!
50 years or HALF A CENTURY after the initiation of the project “STANDARDISATION AND DISTRICT BASED” admission to university remain the criteria in this triple blessed country!!! Why??!
Because none want to rectify it because, if they do they would remove the “MESMERISM CREATED BY THE LEGEND OXFORD EDUCATED SWRDB OF CAPTURING POWER” in this country and they lose – I mean the self-serving politicians!!!

      (Part III)
Above proves that Politics in SL is all about the Politicians participating, the politicians interest and furtherance of their prosperity klept•oc•racy, nepotism and power!!
Not about the Community or citizens at large, who they get elected with peoples’ votes to Govern!
SAD STATE OF A VERY PLEASANT COUNTRY AND PEOPLE at the southern tip of the Indian Sub-continent??!!
To accentuate my point on the negatives of Standardisation and District quota system:
Recently, (end of 2021) we had a scenario where the citizens saw the Prime minister limping and unable to stand on his own feet by himself, being helped by 2 others to the chartered plane taking him to Thirupathy and back??!!
2 months or so later, there it was in the grapevine, that he underwent a spinal operation (critical) and performed at nawaloka, because he did not want to go to the UK (Personal reasons whatever), performed by a TOP Orthopaedic Surgeon of repute (not far off if I mention as in the bracket oftop 10 in the world!!)
Low and behold, he happened to be a Sri Lankan, belonging to the minority community (Muslim), whom “the powers that be”

      (Part IV) Contd.
have been ridiculing and suffered indignity of cremating their Covid dead in stead of burying them as per tradition??!! LEAVE THAT POINT AS IT MAY!!
My point is, if not for standardisation and district quota system, this individual would have gone thru’ Ceylon Medical College, Borella and joined the Sri Lanka health service??
What and advantage and credit to the SL Health service than giving and attributing that to NHS of Grate Britain??!!
SHORT SIGHTED BRAINLESS IDIOSNCRACY AT IT’S BEST??!!
If this is not as I have stated, then what is foolish, short-sightedness, even after half a century, the emancipated politicians and cardboard heroes and administration, devoid of plans to improve educational infrastructure and dismantle STANDARDISATION??!!
Or, IS THE MESMERISM, OF SWRDB, BEING CONTINUED UNDER COVER??
LEAVE YOU WITH THAT THOUGHT TO PONDER??

      • 0
        0

I hear what you say but politicians are different from statesmen. I really don’t think SWRD was Racist or were his children.(many will differ but sorry). Anura debated in English, drank lots of Scotch and shopped at Selfridges and stared at things whenever he got to UK. The clever Kloggs “nephew” thought it was all beneath him or even his low swung old Bogaward Issballa. I make no comment on Mrs B , but the Rattwattes were largely decent guys who brought credit to a good school on the hills! They all had friends from different races and some even accepted their mixed heritage openly.
The point was none of this language thing was done to really help the people. It was just politically expedient…..and admittedly “exciting “!!!
Later on competition got worse and worse …….and that is perhaps why Samuel Jonson said “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel”

Some found it exciting and modified the word “only” to exclude the “other” along the way and even started a history from a point convenient to them and set it as the timeline of the human race. Herein are the true scoundrels that Jonson spoke of.
Over to you now, backwards Patriots !

The aragalaya is full of incompetent buffoons. Primarily our university stock plus some even more stupid idiots. All they have is anger and rage but no clue as to how to run a country. These are the very same people who voted for the Rajapkashes after they killed 200+ people on Easter Sunday. Look around us what can we do to become like our regional success stories. All of them mastered the art of high tech. What does that mean and can we catch up. THe biggest stumbling block to catching up is our university system which churns out half backed swabasha arts graduates who can barely speak a word of English. This has got to stop. The Aragalaya is full of these types. There is a critical shortage of electronic chips in the world. TSMC the worlds largest chip manufacturer which was established with the backing of the Taiwanese government is under threat and struggling vehemently to diversify and relocate to other countries. There are other types of non silicone chips also in short supply. Do our leaders have a clue about how to tap into this market? Have they ever seen the inside of a foundry? We export the best quality Cinnamon. But the art of packing Cinnamon is dying out because the sons of the existing packers are the Aragala karayas not interested in their fathers trade. This has to change.

“The Rajapaksas practiced restraint only because the swelling tide of mass opposition left them with little choice.”

Would the Rajapaksas practiced restraint if the mass of protestors were Tamils? don’t think so!

      R Kaz,
“Would the Rajapaksas practiced restraint if the mass of protestors were Tamils?”

Rajapakshes did not kill Tamil protestors. They killed Tamil terrorists who massacred Sinhala Buddhists for three decades.

        EE,
45 K of them on V-day plus those killed before??!!!
No wonder your justification of 185,000 army to contend that situation?
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka – genius and legend to have achieved stated goals and results?!

The same Lion flag that was waved to celebrate the defeat of the LTTE in 2009 is now being waved by the aragalaya protestors. For the Tamils, what happened in 2009 was not only the defeat of the LTTE but the killing of thousands of innocent Tamil civilians which was celebrated with waving of the lion flag. Kiilling of innocent Tamils is still being covered up and in addition to that, the Tamil people are still facing some serious grievances and injustices from the war that haven’t been addressed In this scenario, while the dire economic issues facing the country impact all Sri Lankans and the wholescale eviction of the Rajapaksas and their acolytes from the political stage will be welcome by Tamils, the aragalaya movement has not shown any signs of addressing the Tamil grievances which are not months old like the fuel shortages etc., but decades old. When will these grievances get addressed by the aragalaya movement?

Do you expect him to wave a Tiger flag? The selection is rather limited.

      R Kaz,
“Tamil people are still facing some serious grievances and injustices from the war that haven’t been addressed.”

Blame V Tamil politicians in Yapanaya who passed Vaddukoddai Resolution to create a separate State for Tamils in Yapanaya, declared war against the Government of Sri Lanka and Sinhala Buddhists and urged Tamils to take up arms and fight to grab Sinhala land in NE to create Eelam.

        EE,
Why only V Tamil politicians only to be blamed??
What about the renowned Kandyan Goigama Buddhists (KGB) – not the Russian secret service but Sri Lankan counterpart of different sorts, who discerned that glorified “Avenue of Power” as SWRDB, explained well in 1930’s interactions “How language mesmerises the Sinhala Electorate”!!
That is the mesmerism that made the Father of the present day R Bros Inc., to follow SWRDB like a “Shadow” at the cross over – Hunger for Power!!?? Or what else??
Progeny has that ‘hunger’ in plenty and surmounting quantity!!

“The people wanted Rajapaksas gone because the family was responsible for our economic calamity.”

Rajapakses were in power from 2005-2015 and 2019-2022. According to the Wikipedia, ” The country had experienced an annual growth of 6.4 percent from 2003 to 2012, well above its regional peers.” Gothabaya was in power for less than 3 full years, not enough time to bankrupt a country. One has to begin to look at other factors as the primary source of the economic problem. Three good candidates: bond scam, Easter Attacks and Covid-19. Collectively, these wiped out GDP, foreign remittances, and forex reserves. Rajapakses are not responsible for any of them. The reality is that Gothabaya probably inherited an economy on the brink after the Easter Attacks and bond scam. COVID-19 was the nail in the coffin.

If a government could not anticipate financial trouble ahead even after warnings in early 2020, can you call it competent?
Name one wise move GR made to avert crisis. If at all he and his advisors aggravated the situation.

      Lester,
      1. “Gothabaya was in power for less than 3 full years, not enough time to bankrupt a country.
      2. One has to begin to look at other factors as the primary source of the economic problem.”
      The load of Bull ‘S’!!
      A. Gota was in power and control -2.5 years! He did not know what was happening around him? He didn’t recognise the signals of downturn? Failing remittance of expatriates over 2 years causing dearth of USD reserves shrinking – cause, PEGGING OF THE DOLLAR AT UNREALISTIC, EGOISTIC LOW FIGURE OF SL Rs. 203.00 PER USD, DESPITE OMINOUS WARNINGS FROM OPPOSITION MPS’ in parliament and outside of impending disaster!
Significantly, Harsha de Silva’s speech in parliament around end September 2020??!! Was it deep slumber, Ignorance of economics, fool hardy contempt for best of advice given by economist of the opposition!! They had a central bank chief who was a professor (W D Luxman) but suspect his warnings and advise too if given were ignored!!
Very difficult to educate and convert Idiots with low IQ to high potential Intelligentsia!??
      Near impossible, if not Futile??!!

      (Part II)
Gota had 1½ clear years to correct the flaw of USD rate pegging, did nothing but the “Accountant” Governor CBSL, kept on filibustering and spraying USD reserves of 6 Billion like confetti at a wedding trying to defend the ‘unrealistic’ USD rate with no effect??!!
      B. Find excuses now to palm it on to some previous administration???
      C. Remember PBJ warned that it is better that MaRa lost 8th January 2015 election to MS, because of looming economic crisis due extraordinary borrowings (very high borrowings and Loans/GDP Ratios) mostly due to the
      a. Chinese funding at high commercial interest and
      b. short repayment period for
      c. Hambantota Port,
      d. Mattala Airport,
      e. Sooriyawewa Stadium,
      f. ‘Matara to Tangalle and beyond’ railway line,
      g. All of which had “suspect low or NO return on Investments” (RoI)??!!
Now you have the reasons for the conundrum and the cause for the downfall??
We have high repayment of loans to what we earn regularly by services and Goods??!!
Unfortunately all these happenings go back to 2009 post war to December 2014??!!
Your efforts are undone, pity you, the person responsible is none other – your Messiah!?
Then, President/Finance Minister – your Paymaster!!??

Just one of your bogus points, “bond scam”.
I know you have no answer, but kindly explain how borrowing 10 Billion RUPEES can wipe out USD reserves of 7 Billion??
if you have to lie, at least make it convincing.

The GoSL will be now try to target the main activists in the ARAGALAYA in order to weakened it. Aragalaya still has NOT achieved its purpose. The CORRUPT SYSTEM still exists and the parliamentarians are still spending the ‘ PEOPLE’S MONEY’ wastefully. The MPs and the Rajapaksas + acolytes who got affected by damage to their properties should not be compensated from national coffers. Tamils weren’t compensated by state after its sponsored terrorism [1958, 1977, 1983]
    Aragalaya needs to strengthen itself.

This article from Tisaranee Gunasekara is no surprise looking back at her track record. She along with Dayan Jayatilake and HLD Mahindapala handled the Fourth Estate when Premadasa was in Power. They covered up all misdoings and excesses of Premadasa during his rule. Then when in 2001 December UNP won the General Election with the cross overs of Rajitha Senaratne, SB Dissanayake et al. The Trio, expected Ranil Wickremasinghe to appoint them to be in charge of the Fourth Estate once again. This did not happen because them being ardent supporters of Premadasa covering his extrajudicial killings of Richard De Zoysa Ranil Wickremasinghe had to sail with the lot, to free the UNP from these Unscrupulous. Another reason was the attempt of Sirisena Cooray, Premadasa’s Comrade in Crime, who was trying to re-enter the UNP. Sirisena Cooray with these Media Journalists would have been a deadly combine to have Ranil Wickremasinghe to face the same fate that befell Premadasa. Therefore Ranil kept the three out. This infuriated the lot. Dayan and HLD soon began to attack Ranil Wickremasinghe and his Policies. Tisaranee Gunasekara was silent for a while and started to expose the Rajapaksas and many in this forum hailed her. Occasionally she had a dig at Ranil Wickremasinghe but she did not overdo. Now it appears she has come out with all her guns firing at Ranil Wickremasinghe.

Those who howl that Aragalaya is finished are far sillier than those who thought that it would soon achieve total victory.

Gotta master minded this whole thing by appointing Ranil. Now he is coming back. He cannot go to California USA due to no visa issued. Well Gotta and Mahinda will be back in power. Be ready people. They are coming. I am sure the voters will vote because they forget the past and not well educated with short memory.

You are attributing skills to someone who blundered through two and a half years of power.
He offered the post to two others before he opted for RW, on whose guidance we may not know for certain yet.
Why voters, many commentators here seem to have very short memories.
