We have a very interesting position in Sri Lanka in respect of the country’s ethnic problem, a perpetual killer force that raged throughout the north and east and now trying to emerge in some parts outside of this region.
This ghastly position prevailed for thirty years because there were two main forces, a terrorist and a dodgy company of petty, prevaricating politicians. While the need of the hour is a resolution to this problem, the two main players did not want to resolve it with one seeking a mafia state and the other unwilling to recognize the just rights of the minority communities. The mafia state was fortunately defeated by 2009.
There was terrorist horror on one side with an entire region under threat and on the other side, blatant racial and religious chauvinism that ignores that all the people of Sri Lanka irrespective of their cultural diversities, have a common heritage rooted in India.
The right kind of solution based on the country’s historical governmental systems would have been an ideal solution but both extreme players did not want it and together they had turned the guns not so much on each other but on the people, all innocent, all helpless and all pawns in the hands of leaders who have no compassion, are utterly corrupt and employ weapons of destruction to assert their power by abusing the rights and will of the people; not even children are exempted.
More and more outside interests are sneaking in and certain powers that crave for global domination have already gained some foothold in Sri Lanka. It appears Sri Lankan politicians have been a breed without a sense of commitment, service and with a total lack of vision.
If only the country would free itself from its racial and religious chauvinism which Buddhist principles will never support, terrorism will scream its way out of the country like a horrendous ghost exorcised. But the politicians are far too small and mean for such an honourable undertaking. It is a country where terrorism and racism fuel each other and are interdependent.
As a pavement wit in Wellawatte once commented, the Sri Lankan politicians can talk the talk and walk the walk but cannot communicate or even get anywhere. Fake and fraud form their false façade. Sri Lanka is certainly a land where brigands and bigots are are bizarre buddies and bedfellows.

The Govigama Mafia yet trying to fool the masses by fielding the ‘corrupt to the core’, infamous criminal Gotabhaya for the Presidential candidature, without any fear nor regret of the treacherous nature of its collective nature that the people who are being knowledgeable about who wants the justice be served on this animal for his unpardonable crimes. The Govi Mafia fears that someone who is not from their clan is ever becoming taking control of the state and its controls. So, Gota is projected as the ultimate choice of the Evil Govigama clan.

You write about terrorism but failed to mention the role of state terrorists in 1956 1958 1977 1981 & 1983 pogroms. Why are you so blind?
Tell us why do state still illegally occupying private lands owned by Tamils by stationing its armed forces? Why do armed forces involve in local administration of education farming and fishing in North and East? Why can’t they allow the local people to run their own affairs?
Please read Ceylon history from 1920s to learn how actions of southern mafia state and its politicians pushed Tamils to a corner and eventually to take up arms against the state. There was no other option given for Tamils at that time. Think of JVP uprising in 1971 against the state and not 1980s. You could find similarities.
Open your eyes Udara, you are surrounded by second and third generation of

The following comment is made with good intention and is not nit-picking. The part ~ “……turned the guns not so much on each other…….” needs a closer look. Who used the guns first? Till the July 1983 pogrom, one side never considered using guns.

Young Udara Soysa’s intention is laudable. But there is no reference to the Elephant in the Room. If the post-1950 period is unanimously accepted as the raison d’etre for our main problem of racial-religious conflict then the deleterious role of the politicised monkhood, going riotous outside the tranquil Daboga, should not only be acknowledged but vigorously condemned. There cannot be an elected Govt and a politicised monkhood that competes for the role of governance. Take the case of the appointment of the Governor to the Central Province. The Govt rationally chooses Reginald Cooray. But the powerful monks audaciously reject his appointment on the base of caste and religion – and they have the day!!!!!!! In the circumstances, justice and fair play to the Tamil Nation under this reality is a pipe-dream.
Sinhala Buddhist Sri Lanka is fated to suffer until that day history will render to the Tamils their part of their Nation in this 2 Nation island (I realise the Muslims want it to be a 3 Nation Island with their claim of being here for 1,000 years. Or is it more?) Many serious analysts believe that day is coming – may be not too soon but come it will.
