A Picture’s Worth A Thousand Words!

By Emil van der Poorten

Having failed to thwart the SLFP-led UPFA move to impeach Chief Justice Dr. Srirani Bandaranayake, the UNP parliamentary group joined government members for dinner at the official residence of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa. President Mahinda Rajapaksa shares a light moment with Chief Opposition Whip, John Amaratunga, MP, who quit the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) investigating the conduct of the CJ last Friday. Another vociferous critic of the government, MP Dayasiri Jayasekera and National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Minister Wimal Weerawansa, too are seen in a jovial mood. (Pic by Chandana Perera)”

“Divided in fighting, united in feasting

This picture and the caption which accompanied it which appeared in The Island newspaper of December 10th says it all in the matter of the government being six of one and the (UNP) opposition half a dozen of the other!  Look at the line up in celebration of jollity: Dayasiri  Jayasekera, “Long” John Amaratunge, Wimal Weerawansa, Neomal Perera(?) and that’s without the photographer using a wide-angle lens to capture those not able to nestle as close as they would have liked to the President at a lavish dinner party hosted by Chamal Rajapaksa, the Speaker of the House (not in the picture) at his residence.

While pictures (and captions) like this do nothing but encourage the anti-democratic impulse not to vote, one cannot but pay grudging respect to that old admonition which goes, “Don’t vote, it only encourages the rascals.”

While it might sound repetitious to do so, I have to remind anyone reading this piece of the circumstances of this photograph taken on the occasion of a dinner party thrown by the Speaker of our legislature who only hours before had presided over probably the single most egregious blow delivered to democracy in this country by anyone.

While some might welcome this show of bonhomie from our MPs who are better known for unrivalled boorishness both inside and out of the legislature, what this depicts, most graphically is the cant and humbug of people who are presiding over the daily diminution of our democratic rights and, in fact, our very right to exist as dignified human beings in this country.

This is proof, if proof be needed, of the rank hypocrisy of the vast majority of our legislators.  That ALL of them appear, in the last resort, to be beholden to a Sri Lankan Machiavelli (or is it Svengali?) of unrivalled proportions is one of the less well-kept secrets among those who have an interest in this country’s political affairs.  If you are not beholden to the Maharajananwahanse, it could constitute playing with fire because not to hand such a sword to our All-Powerful One might well make one vulnerable to the ultimate in risks. How does it go? “If you can’t bribe or blackmail them, pick them up in a white van, throw them in jail or simply kill them” isn’t it?  The anthem for those in that small and diminishing category could well be, “Here come de white vans, boys!”

Any investigative political journal worth its salt needs to get the guest list for this occasion and publish it so that the people of this country will have confirmation, if confirmation is needed, of the duplicity of those we elect to represent us, paying them most handsomely for that privilege.  It seems, in fact, that one does not, any longer, even need to cross the floor to be clasped to the bosom of Mahinda Rajapaksa and have bestowed upon one all the goodies hitherto reserved for those who betrayed their party and those who put them in Parliament to represent policies opposed to those of Mahinda Rajapaksa and his stooges.  Now it is far simpler and easier: all one needs to do is break bread with The Royal Family or parts thereof!

In the context of a malnourished population on one hand and a Member of Parliament demanding that prime cuts of pork be served (significantly discounted below the price that Citizen Banda has to pay in the market) in the legislature’s restaurant, this makes for more than the usual Theatre of the Absurd.  One might, in fact, be forgiven if one were to suggest that this IS the ultimate in theatre of the absurd!

Don’t forget my friend D.M. Swaminathan MP standing tall there (in his
favourite dark-blue shirt/pants) The popular Swami is sure of a Cabinet Post if Ranil manages it, eventually. From good stock, lawyer and old UNP faithful. Once UNP Treasurer and now in the House via the National List.

Thanks Colombo telegraph for this picture! NERO FIDDLING WHILE ROME BURNS..
What an insult to the people by these politicians!
The Rajapass political culture of COLOMBO NIGHT RACES AND TAMASHAS while institutions and people are being destroyed has to stop and the dictator held ACCOUNTABLE by the people. But,
The politicians in the pic. are celebrating the destruction and disrepute they have brought to institutions that ensure justice and fairness for the people and are using our tax money to fatten themselevs!
These unprincipled clowns who sit in the Diya-wenna parliament are a national disgrace and an INSULT TO THE PEOPLE OF LANKA.
Ranil Wickramasinge’s Stooge, Amartunge, and Dayasiri should have BOYCOTTED the Rajapassa brothers orgy to celebrate a Kangaroo court that insults the people of Lanka. The politicians must be held accountable!

There are no women in this picture – women have better sense than to celebrate when the people and the judiciary of Lanka have been insulted by the Rajapassa family dictatorship and their cronies shown here..
The politicians of Lanka – govt and opposition alike are the scum of the earth with a few exceptions.

I am about to throw up after seeing this dispicable photograph. Taken just a few hours after PSC clowns abused nation’s CJ. Sri Lankans who elect these self-serving thieves to Parliament again and again are idiots.

This picture is an INSULT AND AFFRONT TO THE PEOPLE OF LANKA BY THE UNP AND SLFP POLITICIANS. The impunity of politicians of the Diyawenn parliament of thugs and fools must end!
Of all the members of the Kangaroo Court called the PSC, it was ONLY JVP’s Vijith Hearth who stood out and DID THE RIGHT THING – by exposing the muck within the Diyawenna parliament’s culture and mode of operation. The UNP members of the PSC in particular, Ranil’s favorite Amaratunge, should be ashamed of themselves!
To have been present at the BOORISH and UNCOUTH Chamal Rajapassa’s house to fatten themselves once again, after attempting to destroy the judiciary and principles of NATURAL JUSTICE AND DUE PROCESS by Chamal against Sri Lanka’s first woman CJ.
The people of Lanka have been insulted and degraded by the politicians and thank fully are finally speaking out against the UNP and Rajapassa regime.
The Kangaroo Court called the PSC was not just an INSULT to the CJ and the judiciary but the people of Lanka. Thanks to the BASL standing firm on the principles of NATURAL JUSTICE AND DUE PROCESS, Mahinda Rajapassa who set up and REMOTE CONTROLLED THE KANGAROO COURT run by a bunch of uneducated and MORONIC POLITICIANS in the Diyawenna Parliament is now feeling the heat and has tried to distance himself from the PSC panel of clowns and thugs who performed Chamal Rajapassas dirty work.
MR now wants to set up another commission – having exposed his own clownish Ministers who operated the Kangaroo Court called the PSC on his instructions as a bunch of morons – the likes of Weerawansa, Dilan Perera, the Adam with many Eves, Senaratne, Yapa etc.
Rajapassa’s and the regime’s IMPUNITY AND IMMUNITY MUST END. The regime has INSULTED THE PEOPLE OF SRI LANKA and he must be held accountable for bringing the Judiciary and legislature into disrepute and making the SOVEREIGN PEOPLE of Lanka the laughing stock of the world.
The CJ should sue the members of the Kangaroo Court in the Diyawenna Oya who insulted her since they are on record and there a witnesses.

cooperate with all good works done by the govt.I remember Ranil
said the same thing to Chandrika but restricted it to two yrs.
That’s what John A also did by joining the UN trip. This govt is
not doing anything bad and that saves Ranil from being busy! But
      remember,no jokes with Ranil!

I believe one should maintain decorum with one’s adversaries in Politics with restraint. But when you over do yourself, it sends a different message and also you subject yourself to ridicule. A classic case of such is displayed in the photo. One need not be rude to one’s opponents but it is important to maintain one’s dignity and Principles. One need not bow and fall at the feet of this bugger, merely because he is the President. Afterall everything boils down to breeding. How distasteful to see these UNP buggers standing in attention to this Scum Bag. They should have been mindful to respect themselves, before respecting others.

Srilal – Right or wrong John A has remained faithful to Ranil/UNP.
MR and he have been friends for a long time. Close friends are aware
he demured on several moves made to him to join the Jumbo Cabinet.
I don’t know of the future. Decent family man, somewhat reticent and
has not been involved in any tasteless affairs. I am sorry he has lost
8 years already and is entering his 70s.

When dictatorship is a fact, Revolution becomes a right! ;)

Multimillionaire Sri Lankan swine ostensibly “run” for President of Sri Lanka as a form of buying their way to official power. The average Sri Lankan fool actually falls for the ploy. No poor or even average Sri Lankan has enough money to “run” for President. It’s a rich man’s game. It’s a con-man’s game. It’s a duping game. It’s a game of SHAME. And the masses eat it up because they know they have no other real options, certainly no real choices.

Buying political office in Sri Lanka is the oldest and the only game in town: It’s a form of sociopolitical deception the mechanics of which are nothing more than a charade in the person of casting a worthless “vote” dressed in the myth of empowerment and enfranchisement of “the working stiff”.

The rich always “run”; the rich always win; the rich always have power; the rich always get the best; and, most of all, the rich always break their promises to the poor fools who voted for them. :) :) :)

The current rich gang is reported to amassed 1.2 to 1.8 Billion USD
by way of commissions within the family – they are bound to use it all
in building a very firm and lasting Dictatorship that surpasses Korea,
Myanmmar, Libiya etc., They are already exihibiting the wealth…

These guys are yet to learn the Medamulana Doctrine which is the carrot(Bribe).. and stick (white van) policy.

This is the same crook Who won all the elections by rigging the UNP and other party votes……..and who Bought over 100 UNP’s and others to cross into his party by giving unknown amount of bribery ……..and constantly tear gassed, water cannoned, batton charged and sent many UNP/JVP/TNA supporters to hospitals during the past protest marches….and…who sent the world renouned army commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka to prison without any reason and finally firing Mr. Kariyawasam and impeaching the honest and hardworking CJ to be sent into jail…. now putting the arm round the shoulder of a UNP member and taking photoes.

I will never ever trust this medamulana crook and staying close is very risky. Already the 117 plus 7 are in trouble and we will see who is going to have the last laugh.

I am still confused as to say if this is Birds of feather….or…..
    real wolf in sheep cloth.

    Anybody’s guess.

Yes, we should keep blaming and denigrating the fools who do not follow our line.

All this is happening because the stupid public in this country is keeping on supporting this government just because they ended thirty years of terrorism.

They cant see how our salvation could come only from foreign interests in this country, from our friends who work in the embassies. They forget the last minute effort by US, UK and France to save the life of Prabhakaran at the last minutes of the war, as per best Buddhis traditions.

Why dont they go to USAID and ask for more aid projects? Why dont they go to Transpaency International? Recall Robert O. Blake and vote against Palestine at the UN.

Reading Emil, I am reminded of the saying Sinahalaya Modaya again and again. Next year in J’slam Emil.

After the rejection of reasonable requests of the opposition was rejected by the PSC and by the Speaker, and PSC calling for witnesses after it rejected CJ’s request and hurriedly presenting a report to the Speaker, I expected the opposition to boycott the Budget voting and the Speaker’s dinner. That’s what the opposition should have done. I am very much disappointed.

People are weary of the present set of jokers in the Parliament be it the Govt or the UNP.The hilarious part is the pricipled approach to the PSC by the UNP and then dining in secrecy at the Speaker’s house. The disgust of poltics in this country is shown by this photo which shows the disgusting opportunists in the guise of heros and dogooders,People rise up rally round honest leaders who are in plenty in the Judiciary like the CJ, University academics who could not be bought over wth MR’s billions of rupees, Lawyers of repute, women leaders etc. Chase these opportunists other than the TNA and JVP.1994 brought to power Chandrika Bandaranayaka to redeem the Nation,it is time to bring in CJ Shirani Banadaranayake to save SL and it;s people.

Based on Mr Sengutuan’s revelations there seem to be a few descent, guys from the Opposition here.

Surely such people must have some sort of affection for the motherland and her poor inhabitants.

They also must know that this great majority have now got a once in a lifetime opportunity to get ahead in the current Economic Boom resulting from the visionary mega development programs that have been put in place by this once in a life time leader.

So their conscience must be compelling them to at least lend a helping hand if they can’t join .

      Sudu Banda:
Your anti-Semitism (the reference to Jerusalem and previous threats to wave a Swastika at me) seems to have emerged here again as it did in a comment you made in a previous column of mine. However, it might do some good to the interests of truth to realise that it is the same Superpower(the U.S.) that is shielding the Zionists of Israel that is providing support to the current Sri Lanka regime, inclusive of providing special dispensations with regard to their trade embargo on Iran, among other things. Many of us have long seen the likes of Robert O. Blake as the principal apologists for your gurus, the Rajapaksas. Facts speak louder than all the Nazi rhetoric you keep trotting out, my friend, and I use the last term very loosely, indeed. IF THE USA DIDN’T WANT THE RAJAPAKSA JUNTA IN POWER THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN LONG GONE BY NOW. That is a FACT and you should put it in your pipe and smoke it after you take out whatever you’ve been using up to now!
Just for your (racist record:I don’t even have any Jewish or Zionist relations and if I did I would neither be ashamed or proud of them.

He (John)didn’t join officially but,has benefited including a family appointment…and Ranil hopes to come to power?? Ranil too has allowed state media (together with photos) to give image that he is close to the powers and will run to the big house at the drop of a hat.

Ranil should have nurtured this crisis (oppurtunity) and developed public opinion from the very begining. No opposition leader can send mixed messeges and hope to build up the national electrorate.Ranil’s “Knowledge” is of no use if you don’t know how to come to power.

The picture tells so many stories to us. I am not saying you have to be enemies all the time. This is not the time for you all to feast and be in a jolly mood. Suppose the budget was passed in the House a little while ago, would have been a people friendly one, we could have excused you. Or the Impeachment you are trying to get through would have been a correct one we could have excused you! Or if cost of living is low, we could have excused you! Or if you are not violating human rights, we could have excused you! or your ministers are well behaved and serving people accordingly, we could have excused you! There is only one reason we could accept your jolly mood, that because you ended that bloody war. For only that reason we have to bear all other garbage. For how long we have to bear the war victory. By the time we realize, it will be too late! God Save Sri Lanka!

Mr Senguttuvan, John A. may be a “decent family man” but I remember the days when his presence (standing up in a jeep opposite, not far from Lake House Bookshop originally, was bel;eved to have been seminal in the killing that day of a striker in an anti (UNP) government protest. I wonder if anyone else recalls that whole episode. we have such short memories. It must have been around the time JR sacked 80,000 (?) workers.
Does anyone know who exactly signed the motion to impeach the CJ? It is surely our right to know. Maybe we should just asked the president. When he denied us a Right to information bill, he said, no need for one, just ask him!
I think a real effort should be made to find out who signed.

Senguttuvan says John A is a “decent family man”. Am I the only one ho recalls a certain unhappy incident which it was believed at the time that John A had a seminal role in? During the era of massive strikes against the UNP goverment in the 1980s, when about 80,000 workers were sacked, Mr A was seen standing up in a police jeep just opposite a buidling near lakeHouse bookshop’s old location, urging on the anti strikers against the strikers. on that occasions one striker lost his life. Does anyone even recall his name?

It is high time we had a list of those who signed the impeachment motion. Who will help to compile it?

Kumi – In and around the 1980s John A was not in Parliament. I did not know him then. The politics of the Wattala-Kandana-JaEla area then was dominated by the late Shelton Jayasinghe, Paris Perera et al. John was, as I recall, Chairman of the Leather Corporation around that time.

But then, you and I know there is no such thing as a politician of consequence in our part of the world with a lilly-white cupboard. Virtually all of them have at least some shades of skeletons in their tainted furniture.

As far as I know, John, the former Josephian and Lawyer, has conducted himself as a gentlemen in and out of Parliament.
His close friendship with MR and some of us in a non-political recreational outfit goes back many years. When John celebrated his 25 years in politics in 2008/2009, MR volunteered to be there. The original venue was changed to accommodate the request of MRs security considerations.

I have a different take on the pic. One can oppose the policies or the practice of the person. yet, the person must receive all respect as a fellow traveler in our journey of continuity. Meaning, separate the policies from the person.
