A Response To Kumar David: Where Are You?

By Vasudeva Nanayakkara

Vasudeva Nanayakkara

Dear Professor Kumar David,

I read my name amongst two, three others in one of your writings. No doubt you have your own skewed conclusions about the UPFA government. But when you had in your article refered to me as one who will not leave the UPFA government until the last of the goblet is empty and you further go to explain that the perks and pleasures of office are too much for me to exit from the government, I could not resist but respond. If this statement is to be taken as yours and as your understanding of our political purpose then I feel sorry for your poverty of politics. We have our reasons with which you will agree or not for being with the UPFA government. At least you will remember some of it. Why did not you tare them in to pieces with your analytical wisdom and political wit and then go on to say what you said. If our reasoning is bogus you should unmask it, or in the least dismiss them with contempt. I invite you to comment on the following and show that you can be not malicious and not frivolous. You were in our DLF from it’s inception as against the sectarianism of the NSSP.

Of course you did not agree with some of our positions such as self government instead of NSSP’S self determination. We carried on with the dissent of many like you particularly on the questions of our inclusion in the government of the UPFA. You agreed that MR was a reasonable platform on which we can join UPFA and press our positions without playing in to the hands of UNP or militarism.  We had continued differences about how much and to what extent we should raise our opposition within the UPFA government. Basically we agreed that MR and UPFA represented the “Critical Block” as against UNP the militarists and the anarchists who were patently serving imperialism, in the 2010 Presidential election. Our theoretical position that the main contradiction lies between imperialism and the  people required us to back UPFA and you did not differ.

But, when MR regime went on to a decisive offensive on the LTTE and decimated its military might your antagonism to the government too came to a decisive point of a break with us and our positions. DLF did not ever condone triumphalism of the government after the war.

In fact comrade Vasudeva wrote to the President that he declines the invitation to celebrate the victory of the war saying that it was only an inevitable choice about which we could not rejoice.

Since then you had treated the UPFA as the main enemy. We know that you were never comfortable supporting Fonseka in 2010. You were looking out for that progressive needle in the JVP haystack. When the FSP emerged you cheered as if to say “At last here is that mass left”. Your cheers have paled since then.

You agreed that the objective conditions do not warrant a major socio economic transformation into a post capitalist stage. You had agreed that we could push for social democratic reforms corresponding to the level of the mass consciousness and our subjective capacity to mobilize sizable sections of the working people. You had agreed with us that the social forces who have inherited the tradition of the anti-imperialist and social democratic struggle have moved  as a single coloumn in the path of our history. Did not we really regret the coming of JR due to the break up of our camp. You had also recognized the task of the left to work among these forces with appropriate transitional demands.

You had acknowledged that MR is responsive to the aspirations of these forces. MR’s external policies of close ties with China and friendship with Iran and his – unequivocal stand in favour of a Palestine state are not entirely disjointed from his domestic policy of a national economy and development in the rural sector.

The global context – determines much of what could happen within the present political parameters. But, this should not lead us to come to impressionist conclusions about the character of the MR regime which is dependent on the camp of national democratic progressive forces. We opposed the 18th amendment in the parliament and gave out clearly the reasons for it. At the same time we did not want to be isolated from the progressive masses by breaking with the UPFA and lend an advantage to the reactionary enemies of the government.

There are large numbers of progressive activists with the UPFA. Our mission is to encourage them and bring there consciousness   to bare on the UPFA government and thus help in resisting moves like the call to abolish the 13th amendment. Also demand higher revenue for the government from high incomes for larger amounts of public expenditure including for rural roads, electrification and drinking water. If we had a surplus state revenue like in Venezuela welfare policies would have been no less. The base of our welfare is ahead, of other countries.

We need to propose measures of state revenue like recommencement of bunkering by the Petroleum Corp., or expanding the state enterprises into profit making fields such as we have already done with the Litro gas or Graphite. In fact the graphite company was pulled out of the rut by the state since 2005.

We should next point out and raise a strong pressure to reacquire state’s lucrative ventures like SAGT (Elizabeth Jetty) and the Distilleries Corporation etc. We also propose elected  employees’ Councils in state and semi state institutions to curb corruption and waste. Insurance Corporation back with the state is now the leader of the industry.

Democracy is not in peril as you imagine. Your comparison of UPFA to a Corporate state like that of Mussolini is to miss the whole point about the historical  character of the UPFA. The government of UPFA is engaged in an effort to restructure the political economy from what it has been since 1977 within the bounds of numerous constraints and besieged by the local rightwing and global imperialism. Where are you?

Your sincerely,

Vasudeva Nanayakkara

Minister of National Languages and Social Integration

I lost faith on you the day you raise your hand in support of the 18th Amendment was passed in Parliament. You really proved that you are not the past Vasu who really fought for the rights but another cheap politician who raises the hand for any dirty things the government wanted. I used to list you with great politicians like Ganini Jayasooriya who left the parliament for what he believe was right but with this time of you in parliament I realized you are not even closer to that but just another cheap politician who raise hand for your own survival and for the perks and pleasures like all others in 113 who voted for the impeachment of the CJ. Shame on you, comrade!

There is enough evidence of this fake marxists like Waasi-deva who like Weerasansa, thinks that having a beard will make them a revolutionary or a marxist to fool the poor masses.

Asking the masses to survice on Rs2,500 for a 4 member family, these guys are living a luxury lifestyle and see Waasi-deva’s 3 children profiles in US of A – the very same country that Waasi-Deva and Weerawansa want us liberated in day in and day out.

Vasu(VESA) sahodaraya has became a enemy of the people who takes the side of the regime but not the side of the suffering masses. He voted for 18th amendment to obtain a ministerial post to feed himself and his colleagues. He even runs behind HORA NGOs for money. Why people waste time to talk about this traitor who washes MRs cloths.I don’t see any differences between him and the well known Joker Dilan Perera who does any thing and every thing for his own survival.Vasu is no more a “Sahodaraya’ as in the case of all other former left “Sahodarayas” who have became suckers of the regime. These “Sahodarayas” are compel to support and protect the MRs regime ,no alternative other than the streets for them. But they definitely will go to “Apaya” for their “POWs”

Not only VASIDEVA, respectable, honest and honourable Philip Gunawardena’s sons are also playing the same drum beat. All of them are corrupted. How can they sign the petition of impeachment against CJ WHEN THEY ARE MORE CORRUPTED THAN HER? She is a well educated and respectable lady. She might have done some mistake in the past, but she could stand against this money collecting “Divi Naguma” (family business).

Former chief justice blames “SOMEBODY” for stealing “Tsunami” funds. If it is not true, “SOMEBODY” can go to courts and sue former CJ for lying. If that “SOMEBODY” has done that, how can he bring this impeachment against CJ? How can he investigate her accounts? How can he talk about her “Wathkam-Barakam”

There are 117 Moda Pancho (MPs) signed that petition. We need to investigate their bank accounts and “Wathkam-Barakam” too.

We also need to investigate the properties of Speaker of the parliament and committee members of the selected committee of the impeachment. How about Rajitha? I know a person in this committee, who previously related to the health sector of the country, has sent “Commis money” to his brothers living in France. Witness: JVP head.

Criticisms leveled at Comrade Vasu for his entering broad front politics with the mainstream left-off-centre UPFA governments did not start in 2005. In fact they started in 1994. But they acquired a new distinctive character when Com. Vasu decided to back then P.M. Mahinda Rajapakse in his Presidential Election campaign towards the latter part of 2005. The most prominent hallmarks of this new distinctive character were frivolousness, malice, hatred, hypocrisy and pseudo-intellectual obscurantism. We were at times impatient about Com. Vasu’s patience in tolerating them. In fact this had a demoralizing impact on us to such an extent that we found ourselves embarrassed in the face of criticisms of our political friends regarding Com. Vasu and his politics and our association with it.

But recently we found ourselves to be wrong. Com. Vasu has been adopting a strategic position of waiting till the most suitable person acquires the correct form in his criticisms for countering them in such a way that it will reach and engage all the other critics in a comprehensive manner thereby settling the matters in the most effective way. Prof. Kumar David’s suitability here is that he continued to share many of the views of the Democratic Left Front on some vital matters relating to politics associated with the UPFA government. Comrade Vasu’s assertion on their points of agreement in backing the UPFA candidate in the presidential election in 2010 and Prof. KD’s silence in that matter in his response as well as many other claims of agreement made by Com. Vasu in his response that were answered in the affirmative through silence by Prof. KD in his short response convince us about the fact of his suitability to be the most appropriate critic to be countered for this purpose.

Prof. Kumar David’s brief and evasive reply carries the sentence “There is no need for me to reply to Vasu; the discussants above has said it all”. Comrade Vasu will be feeling really sorry for losing a valued colleague in politics since this tantamount to a declaration by Prof. KD of his renouncing Marxist-Leninist politics. Identification, to what ever degree, of the comments of over 80% of the discussants above (“Bolsheviks”) with anybody still adhering to Marxist – Leninist politics would no doubt be a gross insult to him. (Here we would take in to consideration the fact that even though Com. Vasudeva, the Secretary and the leader of the Democratic Left Front, has adopted a social democratic stance in explaining the party position in the current political affairs, Comrade Vasu as a leftist politician has not yet made a solemn declaration about his lack of faith in Marxist-Leninist politics) Very clearly less than 20% of the discussants above who expressed themselves with some sense, for sure do not show much similarity in their line of thinking to politics of Prof. KD and therefore we are well justified in arriving at this conclusion.

Prof. KD’s answer in the affirmative through silence to the following point referred to in Com. Vasu’s response is especially noteworthy.

“You agreed that the objective conditions do not warrant a major socio economic transformation into a post capitalist stage. You had agreed that we could push for social democratic reforms corresponding to the level of the mass consciousness and our objective capacity to mobilize sizable sections of the working people”
