Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi once again signaled the priority India places on Sri Lanka by swiftly dispatching a shipload of petrol following a telephone conversation with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The Indian Prime Minister’s gesture came at a cost to India, where there have been periodic supply constraints and regional imbalances in fuel distribution, even if not a countrywide shortage. Under Prime Minister Modi, India has demonstrated to Sri Lanka an abundance of goodwill, whether it be the USD 4 billion it extended in assistance to Sri Lanka when it faced international bankruptcy in 2022 or its support in the aftermath of the Ditwah cyclone disaster that affected large parts of the country four months ago. India’s assistance in 2022 was widely acknowledged as critical in stabilising Sri Lanka at a moment of acute crisis.
This record of assistance suggests that India sees Sri Lanka not merely as a neighbour but as a partner whose stability is in its own interest. In contrast to Sri Lanka’s roughly USD 90 billion economy, India’s USD 4,500 billion economy, growing at over 6 percent, underlines the vast asymmetry in economic scale and the importance of Sri Lanka engaging India. A study by the Germany-based Kiel Institute for the World Economy identifies Sri Lanka as the second most vulnerable country in the world to severe food price surges due to its heavy reliance on imported energy and fertilisers. Income per capita remains around the 2018 level after the economic collapse of 2022. The poverty level has risen sharply and includes a quarter of the population. These indicators underline the urgency of sustained economic recovery and the importance of external partnerships, especially with India.
It is, however, important for Sri Lanka not to abdicate its own responsibilities for improving the lives of its people or become dependent and take this Indian assistance for granted. A long unresolved issue that Sri Lanka has been content to leave the burden to India concerns the approximately 90,000 Sri Lankan refugees who continue to live in India, many of them for over three decades. Only recently has a government leader, Minister Bimal Rathnayake, publicly acknowledged their existence and called on them to return. This is a reminder that even as Sri Lanka receives support, it must also take ownership of its own unfinished responsibilities.
Missing Investment
A missing factor in Sri Lanka’s economic development has long been the paucity of foreign investment. In the past this was due to political instability caused by internal conflict, weaknesses in the rule of law, and high levels of corruption. There are now significant improvements in this regard and a window to attract investment from development partners, including India. In his discussions with President Dissanayake, Prime Minister Modi is reported to have referred to the British era oil storage tanks in Trincomalee. These were originally constructed to service the British naval fleet in the Indian Ocean. In 1987, under the Indo Lanka Peace Accord, Sri Lanka agreed to develop these tanks in partnership with India. A further agreement was signed in 2022 involving the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and the Lanka Indian Oil Corporation to jointly develop the facility.
However, progress has been slow and the project remains only partially implemented. The value of these oil storage tanks has become clearer in the context of global energy uncertainty and tensions in the Middle East. Energy analysts have pointed out that strategic storage facilities can provide countries with greater resilience in times of supply disruption. The Trincomalee tanks could become a significant strategic asset not only for Sri Lanka but also for regional energy security. However, historical baggage continues to stand in the way of Sri Lanka’s deeper economic linkage with India. Both ancient and modern history shape perceptions.
The asymmetry in size and power between the two countries is a persistent concern within Sri Lanka. India is a regional power, while Sri Lanka is a small country. This imbalance creates both opportunities for partnership and anxieties about overdependence. The present government has entered into economic and infrastructure agreements with India, but many of these have yet to move beyond initial stages. This has caused frustration to the Indian government, which sees its efforts to support Sri Lanka’s development as not being sufficiently appreciated or effectively utilised. From India’s perspective, delays and hesitation can appear as a lack of commitment. From Sri Lanka’s perspective, caution is often driven by domestic political sensitivities and concerns about sovereignty.
Power Imbalance
Global developments offer a cautionary lesson. What is being seen in the world today is that past friendships and commitments can be abandoned if a bigger and more powerful country can see an opportunity for itself. The plight of Denmark (Greenland) and Canada (51st state) give disturbing messages. Analysts in the field of International Relations frequently point out that power asymmetries shape outcomes in bilateral relations. A widely cited observation by Lord Parlmeston, a 19th century prime minister of Great Britain is that “nations have no permanent friends or allies, they only have permanent interests.” This statement captures an underlying reality that small states must navigate carefully.
For Sri Lanka, this means maintaining a balance. It needs to clearly acknowledge the partnership that India is offering in the area of economic development, as well as in education, connectivity, and technological advancement. India has extended scholarships, supported digital infrastructure, and promoted cross border links that can contribute to Sri Lanka’s long term growth. These are tangible benefits that should not be undervalued. At the same time, Sri Lanka needs to ensure that it does not become overly dependent on Indian largesse or drift into a position where it functions as an appendage of its much larger neighbour. Economic dependence can translate into political vulnerability if not carefully managed. The appropriate response is not to distance itself from India, but to broaden its partnerships.
A hard headed assessment would recognise that India’s support is both genuine and interest driven. India has a clear stake in ensuring that Sri Lanka remains stable, prosperous, and aligned with its broader regional outlook. Sri Lanka needs to move forward with agreed projects such as the Trincomalee oil tanks, improve implementation capacity, and demonstrate reliability as a partner. This does not preclude it from actively seeking investment and cooperation from other partners in Asia and beyond. The path ahead is therefore one of balanced engagement. Sri Lanka can and should welcome India’s partnership while strengthening its own institutions, fulfilling its domestic responsibilities, and diversifying its external relations. This approach can transform a relationship shaped by asymmetry into one defined by mutual benefit and confidence.

“A study by the Germany-based Kiel Institute for the World Economy identifies Sri Lanka as the second most vulnerable country in the world to severe food price surges due to its heavy reliance on imported energy and fertilisers.”
Organic fertilizer could fix the fertilizer problem. Not in the manner implemented by GR, but a more gradual approach with expert guidance. It would also resolve the problems associated with kidney disease.
Nearly one-fifth of global CKD patients are located in China.
In 2024, Sri Lanka imported Fertilizers primarily from: China ($29.8M), Qatar ($29.5M), Russia ($21.8M), Saudi Arabia ($20M), and United Arab Emirates ($18.2M).
Floating nuclear is the way to go for energy. A full-on nuclear power plant is a risky proposition, given that a suicide bomber (what the country has no shortage of) could cause significant damage.

I know people who do organic farming (small-scale), including in Sri Lanka. Not only is the vegetable or meat vastly superior, the health benefits are also discernible.
The pharmaceutical industry wants people to be sick. This is a multi-billion USD industry.
“There’s a lot of money to be made from telling healthy people they’re sick. Some forms of medicalising ordinary life may now be better described as disease mongering: widening the boundaries of treatable illness in order to expand markets for those who sell and deliver treatments.1,2 Pharmaceutical companies are actively involved in sponsoring the definition of diseases and promoting them to both prescribers and consumers. The social construction of illness is being replaced by the corporate construction of disease.”
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1122833/
The pharmaceutical industry works hand-in-hand with the food industry to promote the idea that organic farming has few benefits.
“Lobbying and Policy: Large agribusinesses and related chemical industries often work together to lobby for legislation that protects conventional farming methods, making it difficult for stricter, organic-focused environmental regulations to pass.”
As usual, 79 IQ CT posters will fail to grasp the implications. So, another thumbs down before the water cut.

“At the same time, Sri Lanka needs to ensure that it does not become overly dependent on Indian largesse or drift into a position where it functions as an appendage of its much larger neighbour. “
It is too late to talk about that. Our transport system is Indian-manufactured. A million able-bodied men drive Indian tuk tuks., a larger proportion than in India itself. Our people want easy money, not factory work.
Becoming an appendage might not be such a bad thing given our record in economic mismanagement. Why do we struggle to grow staples like ginger or turmeric at several times the Indian price? A bridge, a power cable and gas pipeline, with a common currency to cushion economic mismanagement, to start with.

… A Special Relationship With India Without Dependence.
Sri Lanka is too poor to speak of no dependence. Period.
We may employ a facade of no dependence; but, the facade will be too flimsy!
India has grown so much, so rapidly, better we shelter.
/
SJ / March 31, 2026
But India is seeking shelter under the US, and even Israel (?).
/
Rohan25 / April 1, 2026
India is not “seeking shelter” from the US and Israel in the sense of requiring protection, but rather is deepening a strategic, military, and economic alliance with them, particularly in the context of the ongoing 2026 Middle East conflict. While some opposition leaders in India have criticised this alignment as an abandonment of India’s traditional impartiality, the Modi government has positioned India firmly within the US-Israel camp, driven by shared geopolitical interests. Strategic Realignment: India has been strengthening ties with the U.S. and Israel to counterbalance regional challenges.
/
SJ / April 1, 2026
Really,
So when will India rush to protect its two clients?
/
Rohan25 / April 1, 2026
Military Partnership: Israel is a major defence supplier to India, and the two countries frequently collaborate on security, technology, and intelligence.
Economic Interdependence: The India-Middle East-European Economic Corridor (IMEC) is designed to strengthen trade routes connecting India to the Middle East and Europe.
2026 Iran War Position: While the U.S. and Israel have conducted strikes against Iran, India has tried to balance its interests in the region with its partnerships. However, there has been significant engagement between the US and India on energy, particularly as India seeks to manage disruptions in the Middle Eastern oil supply.
Diplomatic Pressure: India has faced calls to take a firmer stance in the region, with some debates over its alignment with the U.S.-Israel approach.
In summary, India is pursuing a proactive, interest-driven foreign policy of building closer partnerships with the US and Israel rather than seeking shelter from them

Using AI is fine, as long as you fact-check to see what it spits out is correct, and you should know how to use it properly, as AI also many times gives incorrect information and parrots out what interested parties want to state.

Hello OC,
On the few occasions that I have used AI (usually illustratively) I always put it in Quotes. And if I modify someone else’s quote I put it in a Square Bracket.
As an example here from AI –
“Square brackets [ ] within a quotation signify that the editor, writer, or publisher has added or changed text that was not in the original, often for clarification, grammatical consistency, or privacy”.
We were taught at Secondary School that to do otherwise is Plagiarism or at best misleading.
Best regards

When one uses AI writing, there is this monotonous style it has, rather like the AI voice-overs on YouTube. A lot of words but few core ideas.A “maalu paang ” with a sprat inside. 😁

Did you get that accusation from a bargain-bin insult generator, or did you come up with it all by yourself? However, this accusation coming from you is laughable and the biggest joke, as we all know that you are a Tamil Quisling and a well-known supporter and admirer of Sinhalese Buddhist extremism and Fasism and will leap and attack anyone, especially a Tamil, who speaks against this, China or your nasty racist South Indian origin Kandyan heroine.

I’m trying to be better than I was yesterday, but given the competition, ‘better’ is a pretty low bar, isn’t it? As for my DNA rants, your DNA called, it said it needs a rest from being expressed so loudly. Will try to oblige as long as you lot behave. I feel like I’m 99% identical to you. except for the 1% that wants to stop talking about genetics. Oh, Chromosom-stop me before I turn into an RNA messenger and run away. Then all the fake Aryans, Arabs, all the hoity toities and quislings who come here and pretend to be so very superior, to the very same people whom they poke fun at, will be very happy, as I do not remind them of this, maybe even you. Sorry, I forgot that facts are considered a ‘rant’ if they make you and many here uncomfortable.

India is doing what it thinks is best for itself. At times, it goes against Israel’s and Netanyahu’s interests but sides with them when it suits India, but I have been neutral and given both sides of the story. Don’t worry, I am not a fan of India as it used the Tamils in Eelam to gain a foothold and then discarded them, when it suited India’s interests, but the LTTE’s stupidity of assassination of Rajiv also played a big role in this

India is arming Christian Armenia to counter the Turkey-Pakistan-Azerbaijan axis and secure a Caucasus foothold, while Israel provides significant military technology to Shia Azerbaijan to secure oil supplies and monitor Iran. These moves highlight that regional security, arms exports, and anti-Iran geopolitics outweigh religious alignments in Caucasus conflicts. Armenia has signed deals worth roughly. A billion for Indian-made weapons, including Akash anti-aircraft systems, Pinaka artillery, and anti-drone systems.
Motivation: India aims to strengthen its presence in the Caucasus and directly counter the support provided to Azerbaijan by Turkey and Pakistan, the latter having strained ties with India.
Diversification: Armenia is reducing its reliance on Russia and seeking new security partners, resulting in a deeper strategic partnership with India.
/
Rohan25 / April 1, 2026
Israel is one of Azerbaijan’s top arms suppliers, with roughly 69% of Azerbaijan’s major arms imports coming from Israel between 2016 and 2020, including drones, missiles, and defense systems.
Regional Rivalry: Azerbaijan shares a border with Iran (Israel’s primary regional rival), making it a key strategic partner for Israeli intelligence and defence operations.
Energy Security: Azerbaijan supplies a large portion (up to 40%) of Israel’s oil needs.
Israel-Iran Conflict: Israel maintains its support for Azerbaijan to keep pressure on Iran.
The Nuance: Despite Iran’s ideological stance, it has historically maintained pragmatic relations with ArmeniaThis alignment shows that the India-Armenia and Israel-Azerbaijan pairings are based on national interests, economic ties, and security strategies rather than religious solidarity.

Now let all these local fake Arab South Indian Tamil origin local Muslims, who call themselves Moors instead of Tamil Muslims, to feel close to their Arab masters, cry and howl no Islamic Ummah or Ammah, which is largely in their brainwashed fake Arab head, to justify their fake ethnic identity. Despite being a predominantly Shia Muslim nation ( Not Sunni but a fellow Shia but Turkic speaking ), Azerbaijan maintains a strong strategic, military, and economic alliance with Israel against Iran. This partnership, driven by security cooperation, defence technology, and energy, has made Azerbaijan a key partner for Israel in the Caucasus, often putting Baku at odds with Tehran. Proving nation, ethnicity and national interests are all far more important than the spiritual Ummah, which these local pathetics want to justify for their fake pathetic ethnic identity, deliberately encouraged by the Sinhalese state and ruling class, to divide the Tamils.

No dependence! What a joke. Everything about us is Indian. 99.99% of all our ancestors migrated from India, from prehistoric to recent times. The languages we speak, our writing, history, our culture, our food, the religion we practice, the festivals we celebrate, our dress, and dances are all made in India. Nothing homegrown or independent, very dependent on mother India, so why not economically, it will be far more beneficial for a little puffed-up bankrupt nation that always runs to mother India whenever it is in trouble for handouts and help, crying mommy, mommy or Amma, Amma, as all children do.

“Globalization” has started the ‘COLLAPSE’.
The world sees it happening right now. It started with the USA under Donald Trump. He triggered the first salvo by introducing the ‘Tariff” structure in a punishing mode. He said: ” You come to terms with us, if not, no change in the tariff rates. If you violate our terms and orders, the tariffs will be 100%. We can live without your inputs. If the USA wants, it will make you surrender to our domain”. He demonstrated that with the invasion of Venezuela and threatened to ‘Buy’ Iceland – a “piece of ice” as he sees that country. He isolated Cuba and disconnected it from the outside supply chain.
So we see and are experiencing the complexities of the ‘Supply Chain’ breakdown that would lead to catastrophic and irrecoverable ‘END’ of the world order. This ‘Globalization’ has to end.
A new chapter of ‘Cooperation’ and ‘Coexistence’ has to start.
The present ‘War’ against Iran by the USA and Israel has started to show the entire world the ‘PATH’ to that ‘Beginning’.
