AKD & NPP: Think BIG

By Vishwamithra

Common man’s patience will bring him more happiness than common man’s power.”  ~ Amit Kalantri

Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) was comfortably voted in as President by a plurality of our voters. Parliamentary Elections that followed was a resounding victory for the National People’s Power (NPP), with a four fifths majority. There should be no reason for apology for their victory. Not only were the greater majority of those who voted AKD and the NPP into power looked down upon by those so-called elites in our society, even the leaders of the party themselves were, time and time again, were subjected to ridicule, intimidation, torture and even murder.

Yet, Colombo and all other big cities, where those elites roam and satiate their esoteric pleasures, come nightfall, overwhelmingly voted for AKD and his party. They, AKD and NPP, may be not experienced; nor could they be called consummately equipped to handle state affairs with ease and the comfort of seasoned civil servants. But those seasoned and experienced civil servants and other officials and the political leaders who were charged with the responsibility of crafting and designing and implementing people-friendly policies and principles with the sole intention of ‘serving the people’ had left a legacy of absolute shame, mental torture and financial bankruptcy.

Those civil servants and political leaders, Presidents, Prime Monsters, Cabinet Ministers and all and sundry parliamentarians were quite comfortable in communicating in the English language. Most of them had been elected to parliament time after time and their comfort and ease with which they executed their work orders was, sometimes, the envy of those who were looking from outside into the parliamentary corridors and inner meeting rooms. Yet they all failed the country miserably.

The verdict of the people was not questionable; nor was it obscure or with conditions. The two absolute judgments that were delivered last year in September followed by November elections had no nuanced attachments; they did not carry some enigmatic innuendos. Both Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the National People’s Party received a mandate to change the country’s path to development. Period.

SWRD Bandaranaike’s victory in 1956, at the base of which was the so-called ‘common man’ led by the Maha Sanga, ultimately placed Bandaranaike, a quintessential representative of the then elite of society in Ceylon, at the helm and it was starkly different from the AKD/NPP victories in 2024. Along with Bandaranaike, the Cabinet of Minsters who were appointed too were distinctive products of the system that accepted the mercantile cum foreign-educated class and rejected the common man’s existence. Approach to governance of SWRD, the ‘Expedient Utopian’, as described by James Manor, Bandaranaike’s biographer, was never founded on the service of man. On the contrary, his mission was to stamp his kind of liberalism with anger and dislike towards the then UNP-led elite class.

When the common man placed his destiny on the shoulders of one of the most uncommon men in society, SWRD Bandaranaike, the voters rejoiced, not because he had any personal knowledge of or any abstract compassion for Bandaranaike. He rejoiced because his expectations and aspirations reached an unprecedented high and the privileges that were enjoyed exclusively by the English-speaking elites in the big cities, whether in the Deep South or way up North, would be available for him and his family.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. The very condescending attitude adopted not only by the bureaucracy, but vicariously backed by the common man’s politicians began eating into the fondly draped fabric of his sociopolitical environment. His fondly held fidelity towards his political leaders gradually began its escape; what is apparent and what is real, that blurry space between illusionary and manifestly tangible could not be deciphered by the unsophisticated mind of the average Appuhamy or Natarajah or Mohamed. That tragic reality paved the way for unusual suspicion, outright dislike and growing hatred towards our elites of society.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake did not have to face this dislike, hatred or suspicion. Unlike R Premadasa who recreated his own history by discarding his humble beginnings and portrayed himself along the decadent lines of the rural elite in the Ambalangoda area, AKD did not hide his ancestry. He used his parents’ humble and poverty-level beginnings as an advantage in his election campaign. The people at large, for the first time in their electioneering experience in making choices, saw an authentic leader who could identify himself with them. That alone was a great advantage AKD had. AKD promised the common man a common platform atop which was another common man in AKD.

Now the challenge AKD faces is proving to the people at large that he is a commoner who could understand and implement policies and programs that serve the greater needs of the common man. But statecraft is not only serving the domestic needs of the common man. Being President of the country means much more than pontificating to the converted; the growing geopolitical demands need to be met by the government on time and in a given global context.

The crazy demands of Trump’s tariffs, uncertainty on the diplomatic stance on India and China, that brag of their respective one plus billion populations, purchase of petrol and diesel from Russia, search for new markets in Europe for the garment industry, developing stories of Israel’s involvement in Arugmbay and Potuvil area, require focused attention and the resultant issues could be rightly resolved only by a strategic approach as against impulsive responses.

These uncommon issues too are subjects that the government led by AKD and the NPP has to deal with. Such global-level issues cannot be resolved by thinking ‘small’. AKD and his Cabinet of Ministers need to ‘think big’ not in the abstract, but in tangible terms indeed. The power they were given by the people in successive elections in 2024 cannot be understated. Nor could it be expressed in terms of the common man’s needs alone. It’s undeniably true that the main purpose of their journey is to serve the man and woman who voted for them. But by attempting to resolve their needs exclusively in preference over the growing international demands would only deem the country to a more horrendous fate. The government’s treasury being the source of all our monetary assets and treasures can allure many a disciplined man or woman to the selfish ends of enriching themselves who are charged with the disbursements of such funds which lie in those assets.

The Rajapaksas engaged in politics with the sole aim of making money for themselves and their henchmen. And they succeeded in that dubious endeavor. But they were soundly defeated at both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections. But the unfortunate feature of the current administration seems to be their preoccupation with a sense of inferiority in the presence of the battering intelligentsia who have always opted to sit in their Cinnamon Gardens armchairs and pass verdicts on the abilities, capacities and experience of AKD, his Cabinet and parliamentarians.

Lack of ‘thinking big’ may have contributed to this negative and debilitating condition. However, if ‘thinking big’ leads to arrogance and unruly conduct on the part of the power-holders, then that new condition would be surely more dangerous than being humble and ‘thinking small’. Can they strike a moving equilibrium between these two fringes. That, in fact, seems to be the dominating factor that the present government has to address.

The common man led by another set of common men and women is a spectacular phenomenon and one must indeed be proud for generating such a social dynamic. Politics is the art of the possible. What one would have concluded as impossible could be realistically possible if the enormous powers invested in the politicians is well directed and managed with reasonable care. AKD, for all purposes, seems to be well equipped to manage a diverse set of men and women and motivate them towards achieving their common goal. But by caging themselves in a self-made cocoon would not get them there.

Given the diverse and uncommon global economic and political environment, AKD’s mission has become so much more complex and challenging. When seated in an airconditioned room in the Presidential Secretariat with his cabinet colleagues and friends-in-arms, he should be able to instill in them that notion of self-confidence which he himself has displayed time and time again. Would his friends-in-arms be able to take the lead as much as AKD himself has shown in the six months he has been in power?

There is a vast difference between ‘thinking small’ and ‘thinking big’. One cannot achieve big things if time after time one is bogged down in ‘thinking small’, getting involved in matters that could be resolved by a chief clerk of the Secretariat or a Ministry. A small beginning does not necessarily lead to ‘thinking small’. One great example is R Premadasa. He was one man who was born traditionally small, yet smart and capable enough to ‘think big’. But where Premadasa went wrong was that he did not know where to stop being big. AKD has to be smart enough to apply constraints when brakes are required without ever abandoning his need and capability to ‘think big’.

Please view this in full. THIS is EXTREMELY relevant. You may NEVER hear or see this from the VERY CORRUPT MSM in Sri Lanka. Now it appears they too are part of the deep state.

Now you may realise there is NO LAW AND ORDER IN SRI LANKA.

Make up your own mind as to WHO IS RUNNING Sri Lanka!!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2aX0BDA0KU&ab_channel=MeeMassooTV

AKD has been caught lying MANY times. You only have to view his statements before the election and after.

I’m surprised how people can trust him anymore? The fact that the same status quo is maintained by him. How come Parinda Ranasinghe as AG, Weerasinge(was deputy to Mahendran) head of Central Bank and Nonis is in charge of customs still? Many of their misgivings have been brought to light NOT by the MSM but via social media. Also they were appointments of the previous regime.

No point going on, question AKD’s link with RW and many nefarious characters of the previous regime!

All these SELECTIVE arrest and RELEASE are just a diversion to HOODWINK the nation when all the BIG SHARKS are still at large.

    Who is fooling whom??

    That says it all!!

Justice 1 – You posted this link in another comment. I watched it live before your post.
I say again – ‘ Mun Okkoma Yaaluwo Malli’.

This outspoken man has already been barred from practicing in any court of Law in S/L by a decision of the Supreme Court. Now he is hired by ‘YouTubers’ now and then to sling mud and come up with varying opinions on public issues. Good! We need this type to remind us now and then to recollect our memories, as otherwise, they could lead us to a different path. Possibly, he will be a recruit for the campaign – ‘Million to Namal’

      Justice 1,
“AKD has been caught lying MANY times. You only have to view his statements before the election and after.”
AKD is a politician. All politicians lie, because it is integral to their trade. Would anyone vote for a candidate if he was old and ugly, and promised results only by 2048? You know the answer. If anyone thought AKD is godly and different, I extend my deepest sympathies to them.

      Justice 1,
I wouldn’t put much faith in this opportunist Nagananda. Now he’s trying to “defend ” our sovereignty. There is no such thing as absolute sovereignty, especially if you are living next to a giant. If you accept free food and fuel when it is given, and loans to buy some more stuff, there is a quid pro quo. Making self-important noises on YouTube doesn’t change that.

OC -Well said. Most of our self-proclaimed patriots and ‘Cultural Gurus’ are refusing to accept that we are one more member of the Global network who are compelled to accept universal connectedness.

Did any of these ‘Patriots’ voice their objection when S/L was given US$3 billion by India at a time we couldn’t import the bare minimum requirements of medicine, food, etc. for our survival?

“AKD has been caught lying MANY times. You only have to view his statements before the election and after.”
There is no doubt that AKD’s many of the promises are for winning elections. That does not mean that the former regimes and political parties and political leaders for the past 77 years have more responsibility for not only the crimes of the past but also for the destruction of the rule of law and violence and genocide of Tamils, corruption and bring economic bankruptcy. As it is Sinhalese are more than two third of the Population of this island. It is Sinhalese who has the power to decide what is good for this island. They have military power, They have Religious power. They have the power to govern this island. In a unitary and electoral democratic system you have the power to get rid other communities who follow different religion, speak different language. Unfortunately, this island is in bankruptcy and over 100 Billion dollars in debt. It may go up to even 200 Billion dollars.

I’m certain that AKD lacks Ranil’s and the Rajapakse’s honesty ……… he is surely lying here ……… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8FsEYD8V-M …….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFvUpMCNv6k

Please can someone expose his dirty lies and deceptions with the true facts and figures …….. taking each lie at a time.

So far, I’ve only encountered platitudes ……. not the real facts/figures ……

Surely there’s even one Lankan …… who is up to the task.

Hi LM. nimal fernando has asked a question: ‘ Please can someone expose his (referring to AKD, I believe) dirty lies and deceptions with facts and figures….taking each lie at a time’.

You are the best commentator on this page who accuses ‘AKD’ (better known to you as Thabuthegama Burampi) of all the lies and deceptions in his political career.

Now you have a grand opportunity to enumerate all those lies and deceptions of ‘AKD’ alias ‘Thambuthegama Burampi’. Jump at it.

        Dear Douglas,
I believe that if someone pretends to be sleeping, I do not need to wake them up. Similarly, those who act as if they are dead and blind to the facts about ground realities, why should I bother providing you with a list of “blatant lies” perpetuated by Thambuththegama Buramphi.

Anyway, after watching the following video filled with satirical examples, even my dogs will understand the difference between their practical politics and their pre-election hyperbolic promises.

If the moderator’s satirical expressions are unclear, please refer to your “Kadamanadiya People”. I have no doubt that they are no more advanced than you, Douglas. My experts believe that the current government’s PIRIHIEEMA (downfall) has already spread throughout the country.

            D,
I don’t mean to offend you, but are you kidding? With some of your remarks, Douglas, I hoped you would keep a third eye. I used to respect what you had to say.It appears that you are completely unaware of the facts that are in front of you today.
Furthermore, it should be clear to you that I choose who I respond to. The majority of my comments to CT included links to helpful resources so the reader could see what other people had to say about the subject. In order to save time, please do not ask me to do this. That can only make me think more negatively about Sri Lankans. It is obvious that you will eventually have to face the facts. period !

True or nonsense of a over-rated fool ?

I think his up-bringing in a corrupt but rich ( in Sri Lanka) has given this poof an idea that he is something special !

You think Ranil is special ? Just one another question Leela

            Hello Deepthi,
One of my Colleagues/Friends back in England was from an Aristocratic Huguenot Family. He was one of the very few people who I knew well, that I would describe as an Intellectual. He also happened to be “Gay”, but very unobtrusively.
The only other Educationalist of his standing that I knew was an OBE from Shrewsbury.
My point is that being “Gay” is not a reflection of one’s Intellectual abilities. I am not a fan of Ranil, however I would not cast aspersions on his (or anyone else) Sexual Preferences.
Keep to the “High Road” Deepthi.

What if the sexual preference is with a young boy ? bondage ? violent sex ?

I dont want to go to all these arguments, but humanity has done well when things were less permissive. It is fashionable to say personal choice but I wonder if there is a single wholesome country, political party or organisation that has done well when led by gays

We all know that you have zero knowledge of history, but why make it so obvious?
You think people were less “permissive” 2000 years ago? Have you never heard of the brothels in Pompeii? Or the now-concealed Greek images of buggery (if you what that is).

OC how clever ! You are just like Ranil , a little learning and the Wikipedia makes you think you are a know all ! Ranil is just a lawyer and I think you are just a surface dabbler and may be a wheeler dealer type created by Ranil economics. With your bogus air of learning you must be easily fooling the stupid public servants there like how Paski and Mahendran types manipulated them They both now have Swiss bank accounts.

A brothel here and a naked sculpture there does not make the ancients liberal and permissive. That is fact of history old man

Hitler pardoned many criminals. Is he a liberal ?

Perhaps you don’t know that Hitler lived with his girlfriend for may years without getting married. Is that permissive or not? It has nothing to do with being “liberal “. Now go away, before I make insinuations about you and your marital status if any.

What gives them the right to attack someone in this manner? Given the large number of clients she has served over the years, she may be feeling under the weather, but why should she take it out on former President RW or any of the commenters in this CT?

                  Hello OC,
Queen Victoria was also a Hypocrite. She took full use of what became known as a “Prince Albert”. When Albert died she took up with my distant relation John Brown (on his mother Margaret Leys side) from Deeside. He was a Ghillie at Balmoral before becoming Victoria’s Lover and probable Husband. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/queen-victoria-john-brown-affair-pregnancy
My Brother in Law’s Gt Gt Grandfather was also a Ghillie in Balmoral at the same time as John Brown. The Ghillies were infamous on Deeside for gossiping amongst themselves and Family. Many rumours and stories were passed down the generations.

In feudal Ceylon for expressing your opinion you would have been slapped or even beheaded. In your case the loss of the head would not matter because your ego is anal. Otherwise, why would you think you can slap those that don’t agree with you ?

Ranil-phobia, murunga, and curry flavour. So, who does she see herself as?
Her stupid elders have instilled in her that she is special, but the wicked person cannot be without insulting RANIL, who is now the country’s saviour. We can’t stop solar eclipses, sun rises and sun sets; similarly, we can’t stop a person’s intelligence and pragmatism from shining through. You must accept it, no matter how stupid or malicious you are. This could be the reason why this bitch lost her REFUGEE application and is currently in Wilpattu.

Ironically, even though they have opposed expansions related to tourism, the head of state is forced to open opulent hotel complexes (City of Dreams with Casinos), as if their previous discussions were no longer pertinent. That is what the real criminals in this country will end up doing. All of these things, however, were accurately predicted by former President RW.

Saffronistas regularly bless the killers yet they ritually call the island as being Sinhala/Buddhist country.

Do you recommend both the Saffronistas and the killers attained Nibbana?

Looking through the archives, OC, what has Deepthi—the person without a gender—added to the CT forum over the years? Do you not believe that this individual was hired primarily to counterbalance the comments? This vulgar woman is truly helping the stupid majority by playing on their gullible mindset as the “stupid Namal baby” makes every attempt to seize power.
She only adds things that aren’t relevant to the conversation. She should have a pathological tendency to attack Ranil, Leela, OC, NV, and HT whenever she feels hurt.

I don’t usually hate humans, but you’re the kind of beasts in human disguise who won’t let us live in peace. Deepthi could be a synonym for Sri Lanka’s hatreds. Even a victim who has been raped repeatedly would not behave in this manner, but she does.
I have gotten along with many nationalities, but the kind of low iifes that Sri Lanka generated should be considered a failure beyond the “production of Frankenstein”:

            Deepthi the desperate,
.We’ve been looking for patients for a clinical trial, and you could definitely be eligible. What do you think?

Btw, After Rajapakse made former President RW look foolish, RW was eventually asked to save Rajapkse. Rajapkskehs’ lack of shame was revealed. The fact is that we don’t require any more arguments. He is exceptional in my opinion because of that and the fact that his 26-month presidency also saved this country. The current leadership further demonstrated today that they have failed to accomplish even 5% of what Mr. RW accomplished during their 26 months in office. Like it or not, he has the experience and intelligence of no other politician in the nation right now to save Sri Lanka’s economy from further collapse. Regardless of whether I am a synthesizer or not, I don’t need to conceal this any longer.

“Please can someone expose his dirty lies and deceptions with the true facts and figures …….. taking each lie at a time.”
I think there is a difference between lies and promises. I hope that we are only talking about the Presidential or Parliament election of 2024/25. These elections happened only less than nine months of the five year period. So we have to wait to see another four years to prove whether AKD lied or not. But we can prove undoubtedly that all Presidents and Parliaments lied continuously. SWRD Family, JRJ Family, Premadasa Family and Rajapaksa family was in power from the 1978 as Presidents and Governments. It is useless to talk that NPP follows just RW policies because RW was in Politics over five decades.

In 1986, the then Political Authority (JRJ & Team) thought “BIG” and dished out a handsome package to retiring Presidents and Spouses through the Legislation Act No. 4 of 1986. That package includes – housing, vehicles, petrol, utilities, secretarial allowances, security, etc…etc..

Now “AKD & Team” has thought ‘SMALL’ and decided to ‘REPEAL’ that Act No. 4 of 1986 and withdraw all those perks that are costing nearly Rs. 100 million per year. AKD (Thambuthegama Burampi), why can’t you think ‘BIG’ and amend that legislation to include more perks not only to spouses but also to extend it to the surviving children? You, AKD (team) have set up a “Stolen Asset Recovery Team’ (SART) to work with the International Investigative Team to recover US$7 billion stolen wealth from the politicians of past regimes. Why do you think so ‘SMALL’? Is it because you are ‘Thambuthegama Burampi’? Man, think ‘BIG” and follow the steps of those in the previous regimes.

      D
Do you think that all the perks offered to former presidents an spouses justified?
How many Third World countries offer such things?
Support for sustenance of life in fair comfort (not luxury) and security (adequate against reasonably likely threat to life) are justified.
All else is a waste of public funds.

      • 7
        5

SJ: Agree that some reasonable comforts must be provided.

The question here is, why do people demand that these perks be removed? The simple answer is: The people saw and felt the agony that these political leaders brought upon them. If these leaders and their teams did their entrusted job well and looked after the welfare of the country and the people, certainly there would not be any hesitancy to provide them with not reasonable but even exceptional comforts.

This is a good lesson for all the future politicians.

SJ, I don’t think they need security anymore. Because LTTE is dead, local mafia, Karuna and Pillayan are friends of MR, GR, MS etc., so who is going to shoot them? The only security retired presidents need is from the voters they hoodwinked left, right and centre at every election campaign.

          Hello Jit,
In Sri Lanka (and many other Countries) it doesn’t matter who you know that protects your well-being. If there is a chance that you may provide information that would be detrimental to a Powerful Person, then you are a likely target.
Criminals have even been killed in Court Premises here (in Public) possibly to keep them quiet.
It even happens in the US; many have doubts that Jeffrey Epstein committed Suicide in Jail.

LS, it is not possible for a bankrupted country to provide 114 security guards for a discarded president! You know the money to pay their wages food etc., also comes from the plain flour packet peasants so hardly pay to feed their kids. You may have seen the photo MR sent to media with over hundred army and police security people surrounding him on the vast green in his soon to be acquired ‘retirement home’? Why do we need such a gang to protect even an incumbent president??

              Hello Jit,
I met Tony Blair’s Wife while i was teaching IT in the Crown Courts. She had one Close Protection Professional with her, that kept a discrete distance from us.The slight Bulge in his Jacket and the Coiled wire from his Collar to his Ear was a subtle clue. With well trained Professionals, you do not need multiple Security Personnel (let alone more than a hundred).

Wasn’t it AKD who promised the people of Sri Lanka that he would jail criminals like ‘Mara’ and recover the stolen loot? Now the same AKD-led government has given Mara a massive security squad—bigger than the President’s own! We are watching this circus unfold with utter dismay. So much for justice and accountability.

HT, I believe there is a long process to prosecute a former rogue president who stole the nation with brilliant, sophisticated techniques. Just 8 months is not enough – that is my belief. Even obvious daylight robbing by Keheliya is still taking years to finish. Remember he is only in ‘remand prison’.

Also do not to feel so dismayed! There is good news about MR’s security detail. Probably you missed many past news items on the subject matter such as:

                https://www.dailymirror.lk/breaking-news/Security-detail-for-Mahinda-Rajapaksa-reduced-to-60-personnel/108-295007

Compare the numbers in the article with what he had under RW presidency – maybe around 1600 personnel and a platoon of military vehicles.

                  Dear Jit,
                  That’s exactly the problem.
It takes time to bring these individuals to justice — I’m glad you understand that.
                  .
But let’s not forget: when Ranil was taking his time, it was AKD who pointed fingers at him and cried foul.
                  .
                  What goes around comes around.
Now it’s AKD’s turn to face the people and explain why he hasn’t delivered on his promises.
                  .
My point is that AKD/NPP/JVP cried out at everything without knowing the reality on the ground. They cried and complained due to their ignorance.
Now they are experimenting on how to solve the issues, at our expense of time and money. An ignorant man should not be our leader.

In Lanka ……. the security detail is not for protection …… but mostly to show how important a person one is.

That tuition lady teacher for the year-5 scholarship exam ……. also hired a police escort to make a grand entrance.

Her entrance was only a little less impressive than Ranil’s arrival at the CID ……. (sorry, Ranil fans! :)) )
