This is about our ‘Leftist’ President who has made a turn to the ‘Right’. His ‘Opponents’ claim “they know better and could perform better’. So, this essay is about Political Hypocrisy.
The ‘Global Economy’ is where the ‘Left’ and ‘Right’ finally meet. Adam Smith’s invisible hand is best used for reaching into someone else’s pocket or as the War in West Asia has shown, a global hegemons ability to seize confiscate another sovereign nation’s natural resources.
Aura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) has chosen pragmatism over ideology. Once a vocal critic of the IMF and its “painful” austerity, his administration has largely, meticulously, gingerly, maintained the existing IMF deal to ensure economic stability.
His opponents – Parties such as the SJB now criticize current austerity and tax hikes while their own economic blueprints once promoted similar IMF-backed reforms.
AKD running to be President focused on ethical governance. Despite his anti-corruption platform his government is now being accused of delaying reports on probes completed and irregularities on high level appointments. The opposition has discovered new moral high ground. Port irregularities are regularly highlighted. The Prevention of Terrorism law continues to be applied.
Some Opposition leaders who were integral parties of ousted administrations blamed for our 2022 collapse now preach good governance and integrity while attacking AKD’s policy missteps. AKD too has made a few policy errors.
First, a brief explanation.
Recently, I had an appointment with my appealingly genial Consultant Physician. Apart from being a very good Physician He is a ‘Royalist’ and very much anti JVP. At the last Presidential, he Voted for RW while I voted for AKD.
We had many debates then. While performing his meticulous examination he asked me, “Now don’t you regret your vote?
It is this patronizing sophistry of upper echelons of the middle class that prompts this essay. My Physician insisted that AKD was a hypocrite!
I conceded that there was some truth to it. My response was that perhaps AKD is a hypocrite, but he is a good hypocrite! To justify my claim, I relied on Cambridge Political Science professor David Runciman’s treatise on “Political Hypocrisy”. His thesis on hypocrisy in politics is disarmingly precise and accurate.
Confined to my home, I find revisiting books on my shelves sheds much light on current complexities in both our domestic politics and beyond our shores. Following my encounter with the good doctor I picked up my copy of David Runciman’s seminal work on Political Hypocrisy. The subtitle of this definitive study of Political Hypocrisy sets indicates its ample scope. “The Mask of Power, from Hobbes to Orwell and Beyond.”
Runciman has chosen Hobbs and Orwell to cover his subject of hypocrisy for a purpose. Hobbs defined power. Orwell defined truth. Philosopher Thomas Hobbes believed that maintaining public order called for a strong, absolute government. Otherwise, our lives would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short”. Politics therefore was a kind of perpetual war.
Orwell was essentially a writer and commentator. He made political commentary into a timeless art. The word ‘Orwellian’ attests to his impact. Orwell insisted that “True freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”
Revisiting this book offered deep, sharp insights into the current landscape of Sri Lanka’s present leadership and wannabe leaders.
Hypocrisy is an inescapable and necessary fact of political life. It is cynical to pretend politics can be completely sincere. Instead of searching for “authentic” politicians, voters should learn to distinguish between different types of hypocrisy.
There are Harmless Hypocrites and Harmful Hypocrites. Instead of wasting time trying to pontificate double standards, we must identify the good and better hypocrite of them all. We must assess which hypocrisies are harmless and which are truly damaging to our so-called ‘liberal democracy.
Technology has changed today’s political landscape. YouTubers and social media influencers using a variety of platforms have transitioned from innocuous commentators to powerful political actors. They run the race faster than traditional media both in reach and engagement.
They are also used by our main political actors to bypass the learned and not so learned journalistic gatekeepers to reach out to the ‘Aragalaya’ generation.
The ‘Gal Anguru’ controversy where the Minister has now decided to stepdown is the clearest and immediate example. The constant attempt by rivals to expose each other’s inevitable double standards makes effective governance a highwire circus act.
Let us have a closer look. We are ultimately left with a choice between different kinds of lies and different kinds of truth, often requiring “principled pragmatism” over rigid honesty.
For a democracy to function, leaders must often use “masks” to manage conflicting interests, making some level of hypocritical deception embedded in political language and survival.
I used Professor David Runciman’s lens of Political Hypocrisy to understand AKD the Leftist who pivoted to the right as elected Executive President.
The adoption of the IMF roadmap by President AKD
is a textbook example of what David Runciman’s conceptual frame of principled pragmatism in real time business of politics.
In his book – Political Hypocrisy: The Mask of Power, from Hobbes to Orwell and Beyond, Runciman argues that “the most dangerous form of political hypocrisy is to claim to have a politics without hypocrisy”.
He amplifies principled hypocrisy! It is principled pragmatism. For a leader to be effective in a liberal democracy, he must often adopt a “mask” that balances ideological commitments with the “brute facts about power” and the immediate needs of the state.
AKD’s core political identity is rooted in a left-leaning, anti-neoliberal platform that historically viewed IMF interventions as “corrupt” or “harmful” to national sovereignty.
As President he has made a Pragmatic Pivot. On assuming office AKD acknowledged that “deviating from the current path would be irresponsible” and that Sri Lanka “cannot seek options outside the IMF basket” without risking total economic collapse.
So, he resorted to Karl Marx’s teacher Hegel. The thesis and the antithesis resulting in a Synthesis that made him to abandon his ideological principles! Now, AKD is attempting to implement the IMF objectives through “alternative means” that prioritize social welfare and “relieve the burden off the people”.
This is also the essence of Runciman’s “principled pragmatism “a form of ‘benign self-deception’ where the leader maintains his moral authority (his perch in Pelawatte) while doing what is necessary to keep the nation functioning- his “pragmatism.”
AKD’s IMF “mask” will remain “virtuous” as long as his pragmatic cooperation with the IMF is used as a tool to achieve his broader social goals, rather than becoming an end that betrays his original mandate.
Now we turn to AKD’s opposition or more precisely his opponents who claim to possess the requisites to replace him.
Sajith’s ‘Insignificant Language ploy’
Lost in verbose forays, Sajith Premadasa offers a chaotic contrast. His frequent excursions in to ‘Strategic Planning’, ‘Scenario Planning’ are best described as learned non-essentials. They appear to be a desperate bid to remain relevant in a post-Aragalaya world that has moved on. Runciman quotes the thinker Jeremy Bentham on Insignificant Language of hypocrisy.
Bentham despised ‘Insignificant Language’ that concealed glaringly demonstrable social facts. Facts are not mere babbles. Meaningless jabber of professional jargon as Bentham points out qualifies as ‘verbose forays’ into learned non-essentials! Now, the SJB has turned in to a ‘Sing Song” consolations party that has disenchanted its own ranks.
Dilith Jayaweera’s Entrepreneurial Mask
Dilith Jayaweera is the quintessential marketeer. Runciman in his study of political hypocrisy cites the Dutch Philosopher and Satirist Bernard Mandeville. Mandeville has famously observed that in a commercial society, people must “sham” and present their motives in a “more favorable light” to succeed.
Precisely for that purpose Dilith Jayaweera the master craftsman in “manufacturing of consent” has resorted to a mix of nationalism and cosmopolitan marketing to produce a classic ‘Sham Mask’.
He is the Master of Manufacturing with his consent. He brews a hotchpotch of Sinhala-Buddhist supremacy and urbane marketing sophistry to create his “entrepreneurial state.”
Namal Rajapaksa – inheritor of Systemic Misrule
More than such being inherited, he is the dynastic successor and scion of the Rajapakse misrule. He is shackled by the legacy of a family dynasty burdened by the allegation of untold riches his family has supposedly siphoned away. Namal Rajapakse has displayed remarkable dexterity in portraying his sincerity of purpose- rehabilitating the family halo. He now denounces political patronage and suppression of dissent. His hypocrisy is of the most damaging type. He seems to have narrowed the gap between his party’s past performance and current rhetoric sizable percentage! Rajapaksas have since the end of the civil conflict crafted a distinctive confidence trap for the electorate. By accusing NPP’ of hypocrisy Rajapaksa uses the “anti-hypocrisy” card, which Runciman notes is a classic tool used by politicians to delegitimize rivals, even if the user themselves is perceived as hypocritical!
The most dangerous form of political hypocrisy is to claim a politics without it. We should stop searching for “authentic” leaders. Instead, we must distinguish between “harmless and harmful hypocrisies”.
To me, President AKD’s hypocrisy appears to be principled pragmatism. He may have kept it in reserve while making his bid for the Presidency. It was a mask of power as David Ranciman defines it.
But AKD must be careful. His principled pragmatism can turn into self-deception. With two years into the Presidency his principled hypocrisy has begun to lose its virtue and there are signs of it turning ‘Toxic’.
Our “Orwellian” Reality
What Aragalaya did was to expose the Orwellian concept of “benign self-deception”. We close liquor shops on full moon days and the regime uses liquor shop permits and distilleries as means of fattening party coffers. Orwell in his ‘Animal Farm’ novel says ‘no animal shall drink alcohol to excesses. The collective “trapeze act” of the opposition contenders demonstrate the depth width, and breadth of the “messy and murky compromises of domestic politics” that Orwell tellingly described in his novel ‘Animal Farm.’ Orwell’s advice was that we must not seek non-existent “sincerity”.
In this assessment Anura Kumara Dissanayake our current President emerges as the “Good Hypocrite” truly and rightly aligning with Runciman’s core thesis: that the most effective and least dangerous leaders are those who recognize the necessity of the “mask” for the sake of stability.

For a Sri Lankan with the American passport holder to create a terrorism scenario after fully wiping out the terrorism that arose from the suppression of the minorities in SL, was THE most HEINOUS act that could not be pardoned. I refer to the 21/4/19 Easter Bombings. AKD should bring the master mind behind it to JUSTICE asap. Lots of foreigners too sacriced their lives. I am not sure WHY the Foreign Governments are not interested in finding out the truth. At present, AKD should not lose the powers granted by the PTA. He needs it to bring those crooked murderous thieves to justice.
AKD is lucky to have a friendly neighbour to cushion various external & natural disasters that has been happening since he took the reins.

“Crooked murderous….” may be a description of what the JVP did in1971 and in 1987-1999, wiping out over 50 thousand young people and then government counter terror adding more to it.

The biggest hypocrite was Karl Marx himself! Read how he treated the family: a man should first look after the children he brought into the world …….. before trying to look after anything else.

Name a single Lankan Leftist that wasn’t a hypocrite? …… Perhaps with the exception of that Edmond some guy.
–
If you look at it from the viewpoint of human-condition ……. you guys won’t get trapped in this silly nonsense.

“ a global hegemons”
Are the curse for the inhabitants of the wonderful that was shown to us from beyond the moon!
They bring on poverty destruction &deaths to so many innocent civilians.
Their greed or craving to possess other sovereign countries resources and wealth is totally not justified. What kind of world order is this.
Luckily we have an American Pope in Vatican to counter the lies of Donald Trump. UK should not have allowed the war mongers to use their bases to attack Iran. Who allowed Israel to possess the Nuclear Power?
/
SebastianSR / April 25, 2026
“Luckily we have an American Pope in the Vatican to counter the lies ….”
Unfortunately, do we have anybody sufficiently strong to counter the reactionary policies of the Vatican? In Sri Lanka the Archibishop is cofounding the Easter Bombing investigation by refusing to acknowledge that it was done by ISIS zealots. The father of a Catholic MP (an old ex diplomat and devout Catholic) already knew of the impending Easter attacks and warned his son to not to attend Church. The MP says that the father said he would warn the church as well. In all probability, the Church fathers also regarded the warning as far-fetched and did nothing, just as was done by Maithreepala’s defence secretary. To hide this faux pas the church is shouting for a “Big-Brain” behind the crime. Why was the Catholic MP’s father NOT QUESTIONED by the Shani Abesekera and other investigators to find out the names of Church fathers warned by the MP’s father?
If the Pope looks a great guy in contrast to Trump, we see how far we have gone back in morality and progress. We need a new Voltaire. Meanwhile, let us sing out Psalm 91

We are glad that AKD did not ditch the IMF’s help to get over the credit crunch of SL. AKD needs to get OUT of the clutches of the Sinhala Supremacists…. Be it the laypeople or the clergy.
Tamils need to feel that they are part and parcel of SL society. Progress of SL depends totally on it.
/
SebastianSR / April 25, 2026
The economic failure of Sri Lanka is to blame for much of the problems of Sri Lanka. This is not because of Sinhala Supemacists claiming a “Sinhale” or Tamil Supremacists claiming an “Eelam”, as the decline had already began by 1970. The Marxist rhetoric drove out foreign investments coming to Sri Lanka. The Marixst actions to forment worker revolutions destroyed any success of nascent industries- to vit constant strikes at Velona faactory.
We see from the example of Malasiya that the Bhumiputra Malay supemicist politics di NOT affect Malasiya’s rise to improved economic standing or ethnic peace. So, while many older Tamil-speaking analysts like to see “Sinhala Suprecist polcies” as the “cause” of evils in Sri Lanka. I think that is a shallow analysis. Both Elamist terror and State counter-terror came subsequent to JVP terror which came in within the first year of the LSSP-CP left moving into bed with the Sirima SLFP to form the ULF. The economy stagnated under the draconian controls of the ULF regime, with any outgoing traveler given only 3GBP and three shillings as FEEXs.

The SJB as such was never in power. The Ranil-led UNP was the proponent of tax hikes and reforms. Sajith has stolen the NPP playback and now talks about some nebulous “social economics” rather like the NPP ‘s “system change”.
Corruption? Sri Lankans are corrupt . From birth one is taught to placate the gods. Feed the guys in the temple. Feed the whole village when your grandmother dies. Hand the policeman a few hundred.
Perhaps AKD isn’t corrupt, but I wouldn’t certify the others, especially union leaders. They are as corrupt as any other politician.
But in my opinion, corruption isn’t a problem. If it is, how come places like India , Bangladesh, Indonesia, even the Philippines, are doing better than us? So, forget corruption. Just get things to work. Hire guys who can tell fake coal from real coal. Hire real IT guys who can tell the Treasury when it’s being hacked. Stop importing 20 million rupee cars istead of 50 rupee onions. And last but not least, provide spittoons in newly opened bus stations. This is not Singapore.

“…..But in my opinion, corruption isn’t a problem….”
Then why “Hire guys who can tell fake coal from real coal….” ??
Let bad coal flow in and corruption thrive in this land!!
Because corruption and good governance are natural enemies so mutually exclusive.
/
old codger / April 24, 2026
Jit,
As far as I know, there are no corruption allegations re coal. Just incompetence, ie inability to recognise bad coal.
The corruption allegations are from earlier, when this minister was a functionary at Lanka Fertilizer. Now AKD has appointed a commission to probe coal purchases since 2009. But to what purpose? Even if commissions were made, there was no threat to the power supply. Now, be honest, if corruption gets us good coal, why not? Rather like the situation at the RMV, where registrations take longer and number plates aren’t available since the “elimination of corruption “.
As I pointed out, there are countries which are more corrupt than us, but they aren’t bankrupt.

OC, We were engaged in a long battle some time ago to challenge each other on this subject, though we failed to get anywhere and stuck to our own views in the end. “…Hire real IT guys who can tell the Treasury when it’s being hacked….”
You have any idea when those guys were hired…???
Don’t we have train loads of such guys currently holding senior roles in the state sector – those recruited through ‘merit based, very clean and transparent’ processes in the past three decades by our ex politicians???
/
old codger / April 24, 2026
Jit,
“Don’t we have train loads of such guys currently holding senior roles in the state sector?”
No we don’t.
Since you don’t live here, I doubt you know much about IT guys in Sri Lanka. I know, but don’t ask me how, because that would give away things I want to keep under wraps.
IT people might start with base pay around 50k nowadays with a basic degree. Even someone halfway through their course can get hired, and, depending on ability, might be bossing MSc holders. Again depending on ability, pay can rise to upwards of a million in 8 years. An European salary here, in fact.
Now, would someone with those skills work for the government with its peanuts pay scales and fixed increments? Probably that’s why Dialog Hans and PickMe Jiffry aren’t asking for a salary. But those two can’t monitor everything.
/
Jit / April 25, 2026
I was referring to all senior bureaucrats in the state sector, not particularly IT guys. I agree with the pay scales are not competitive but there are so many other reasons why people join the state sector. For job security, scholarships, desire to hob-nob with the senior politicians and get ‘things’ done esily, pensions, free vehicles, free petrol…there is a long list of benefits OC.
/
old codger / April 25, 2026
Jit,
I mentioned IT guys because only good IT guys (or gals) can spot attacks before they’re successful. No Permanent Secretary can do that.
It’s a different world.

Hello OC,
Since I moved here to Central Province I was surprised at the number of Holidays (Public and Religious) and wondered if this had any effect on Productivity Nationally. It would seem so – “Impact of Excessive Holidays: Countries with very high numbers of public holidays—such as Sri Lanka (25+), India, and Nepal (30+)—often face downward pressure on GDP and manufacturing productivity due to frequent operational disruptions”.
When’s the next Poya Day? I won’t mention Vesak, Poson and Esela. Having at least 4 Major Religions in the Country doesn’t help. By the way Singapore has around 11.
Here is a European Map of Public Holidays. https://jakubmarian.com/number-of-public-holidays-by-country-in-europe/
Paid Annual leave is a different Topic.
Best regards
/
old codger / April 25, 2026
LS,
It isn’t just declared public holidays. There is this habit of declaring the next weekday a holiday if a major festival falls on a weekend, as with this coming Wesak. Then there are the undeclared but real holidays like the weeks after New Year.
India has 10 to 14 depending on state, with a dozen religions. Saudi has the same with only one religion (but they can afford it)

We can see Sinhalese who thrive on these Mahawansha stories are just following his wish word by word…yeah right..!!
Only the Mahawamsa mentions the king Ellalan. No Tamil literary text or inscription in India mentions anything about a king Ellalan (“Elara”). Given how the political movements like the LTTE, TELO, EPRLF had substantial links in Tamil Nadu, it is surprising that Elara was not regarded as being sufficiently important to be mentioned anywhere in the Tamilakam literary works or in its folklore. It is quite possible that both DutuGaemunu and Ellalan were small trible chieftans whose stature was blown up by the Mahawamsa writer who wanted to write an epic poem and needed two heoric figures. Jaffna itself had no enduring independent Tamil literary or folklore tradition prior to 18th century, and what ever exists is derived from the Mahawamsa. Tamil traditions link Ellalan with Manu Needhi Cholan (the Chola who follows the Manu Dharma). Yalpana Vaipava Malai (18th-mentions early Chola figures related to his lineage, linking the just rule of monarchs like Kulakkottan (restorer of the Koneswaram temple) to Manu Needhi Cholan (recast as Ellalan). Konesar Kalvettu inscription also follows the mahawamsa, framing Ellalan as a pious and fair ruler. (continued)

Dil,
There are ongoing public discussions and criticisms in Sri Lanka regarding transparency and accountability under the current government, with some pointing to a gap between political slogans such as being “cleaner than anyone” and accusations that, while projecting such an image, opponents are simultaneously being targeted through character attacks for political advantage.
–
Critics also argue that access to information from certain state institutions has not been fully forthcoming despite RTI (Right to Information) requests, including concerns about parts of the Presidential Media Division. Are u aware of this ?
–
Some further claim that oversight bodies have been relatively quiet in responding to these issues, while government supporters counter that many of these narratives are politically driven and selectively framed. Controversy has also been raised around incidents such as the reported loss of approximately USD 2.5 million, which authorities have attributed to a possible cyber or hacking incident, as well as public events like the “walk for peace” involving visiting Vietnamese monks and a dog, which some critics argue have been used to divert attention from more serious governance concerns.
/
leelagemalli / April 25, 2026
cont.
Opposition figures and commentators further argue that despite being in office for around 16 months, the current administration has not yet produced conclusive evidence in relation to corruption cases it previously highlighted, and they claim that the government tends to deflect criticism rather than address shortcomings with clear policy responses.
–
Supporters of the administration reject these interpretations, arguing that institutional reform takes time and that many allegations remain politically motivated or unverified. At the same time, there is also ongoing public debate about the treatment of dissenting voices and the broader political climate, including concerns about how criticism is handled and whether responses are focused on engagement or rebuttal.
–
Separately, media discussions have also referenced the health of a former president, including reports of treatment abroad and recovery, which have themselves become part of broader political discourse and differing interpretations among supporters and critics alike

Then one has to answer for the appointment of Deshabandu, Bond-scam, the appointment of Arjun Mahendran over Indrajit Coomaraswamy, 82 “advisors” with perks, 37 + 2 ministers, 39 foreign jaunts with entourages of sycophants, the committee that exonerated Nimal Siripala de Silva in just one day to hand back his old ministry, ……….. handing out large sums from the President’s Fund to pols ……….
–
So ….. Ranil’s supporters wouldn’t dare to say Ranil’s government was better. Mahinda’s supporters wouldn’t dare to say Mahinda’s government was better.

“Aura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) has chosen pragmatism over ideology.”
One man’s pragmatism is another’s opportunism.
By 1994 the JVP had become a party hell bent on parliamentary political power.
It failed. The failure was compounded by an opportunistic alliance with MR.
Its popularity was on the decline until 2022 and did not rise significantly even until the elections.
Both elections (presidential and parliamentary) were won at the expense of the SLFP, SLPP, UNP and SJB whose credibility was destroyed by the Aragalaya, for which the input of the JVP was only marginal.
The JVP was unprepared for power, ha no plans (as clearly visible from its education reforms and ‘resistance to IMF’). Its inability control corruption is slowly transforming into becoming as corrupt as the ones who were rejected for heir corruption.

In any society there are certain people who are outliers. Sorry, but they are also human. Do they have any compassion for others whom they consider as hypocrites?

Dear Readers,
.
The images emerging from Sri Lanka of the “Walk for Peace,” accompanied by visiting Vietnamese monks and the dog Aloka, are truly striking. The quiet devotion of people gathered along the roadside reflects a deep sense of mindfulness and spiritual respect that is admirable.

However, these moments of calm stand in sharp contrast to troubling developments in the country’s governance and financial management. Recent reports about a cyberattack on the Treasury—allegedly involving a transaction of around USD 2.5 million routed to Australia—raise serious concerns about the capacity of state institutions to handle financial security at an international standard. Even more worrying is that the public has reportedly been kept in the dark for months following the incident.
/
leelagemalli / April 24, 2026
cont.
.COPE Chairman Dr. Harsha de Silva has stated that responsible officials failed to appear before oversight committees for several consecutive months, and that this has now been escalated to the Minister of Finance, who is also the President. Such lapses suggest not just technical vulnerability, but a breakdown in accountability.
–
Alongside this, recent controversies such as the coal procurement issue further erode confidence. Taken together, these incidents create the impression of a government struggling to manage critical responsibilities at a time when the country is still recovering from economic collapse.
–
The broader concern is the impact on ordinary citizens. Failures in financial governance and national cybersecurity ultimately translate into a heavier burden on taxpayers—many of whom are already facing severe hardship. Strengthening institutional competence, transparency, and accountability is no longer optional; it is essential for rebuilding trust and ensuring the country’s recovery.
/
DIL / April 24, 2026
This is true for ones in dreamland who enjoyed governments that managed critical responsibilities and financial governance so fantastically, that the country debt spiralled out of control leading to bankruptcy.

May my country be blessed with strength and resilience, guided by the peace mission carried out by visiting Vietnamese monks along with Dog Aloka. This country needs far greater strength to overcome its ongoing challenges, which continue to arise one after another. One of the most pressing concerns is that Sri Lankans, in recent years, have repeatedly been misled by hollow promises and unreliable leadership.
–

–
The highly rhetorical promises made by NPP leaders have, over time, proven to be increasingly hollow. There has not been just one scandal, but a series of them, suggesting that serious issues can arise when those responsible lack the necessary experience to manage their portfolios effectively. Among these is the controversial release of over 323 harbour containers despite reports that they were red-labeled, with the public still left in the dark more than a year later. In addition, the coal procurement process has reportedly caused significant losses to the country, as highlighted in the Auditor General’s report.
/
leelagemalli / April 24, 2026
cont.
Now, a further troubling development has emerged: the reported loss of 2.5 million USD, believed to have been stolen by cybercriminals. This incident places yet another burden on the state treasury—one that is particularly difficult for a nation still recovering from economic collapse. At a time when financial discipline and institutional strength are critical, such failures raise serious concerns about oversight and governance.
As members of the opposition, these same individuals were once relentless in their criticism of those in power, leaving little room for counterargument. Yet now, as the current rulers, their actions appear to be contributing to the country’s decline. If hackers have indeed managed to infiltrate Sri Lankan ministries without the knowledge of those responsible, it is deeply concerning and borders on a national tragedy

$2.5M in a $100B economy is miniscule but still shouldn’t have happened, and those responsible must be punished. So should those who stole $Bs and bankrupted the country.

Dil,
I am not aligned with any political party, but based on the factual information currently available, this is how I understand the reported cyber incident involving Sri Lanka’s Treasury.
–
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IwbnXMSE4Q
–
Sri Lanka’s government has consistently claimed strong cybersecurity, especially during election periods.
–
Yet recent reports suggest that a January 2026 debt repayment transfer to Australia may have been compromised, raising serious questions about those assurances. The issue only came to light weeks later through a lawyer, not an official disclosure, before the government acknowledged it while citing investigative reasons for the delay.
–
Based on what has been described, along with expert opinions and available information online, the real concern is the communication gap. When a government that projects confidence withholds critical information, it naturally fuels doubt;whether the cause is an external cyberattack or internal shortcomings. Either way, the incident highlights how transparency and genuine technical capacity are essential to maintaining public trust.

The Truth/Deepthi/Lester,
Doctorates are not based on gaslighting and low-level hypocrisy, but rather on life science (DNA and RNA technology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry). The only candidates who can speak are Mr SJ, NV, Chiv, OC, MF and HT.
Alas! I doubt you or the low-lifes would ever view it correctly.

Almost everyone respects our dear Lankascot. We have learned a great deal from him. Unlike yours, his meaningful comments constantly enhance us. What we were compelled to read from you was nothing but gaslighting and other foolish methods. That conveys practically everything about who you are.
By the way, don’t you think it’s about time you had an anatomist check you out? You are the type of man or woman who was stifled during human progress. Even hybrids in Boston labs don’t behave like you.

Our elders warned us that if we let inexperienced people handle things, the results would be unprecedented. However, Sri Lankans are readily addicted to lies motivated by hatred.Ironically, the country is referred to as “predominately Buddhist.”
–
Why on earth did our people put their trust in a man whose profile plainly showed that he had no accomplishments in his entire political career till 2024, but who had a noisy mouth and was quick to make pompous charges against any of his opponent party members. As of today, no one in the country has generated as many clear lies as AKD et al. These were entirely motivated by trivial (but significant to them) political gains, which misled the innocent, immensely vulnerable majority.

It’s not the personalities ……… but the truth they sometimes write …….. if one is capable of disregarding the personalities and focusing on the truth ……..
–
To borrow from whoever writes as ‘The Truth’ ………. “I think this historian (in this case the writer) also began with a premise and looked for arguments to establish that premise.”
–
What AKD has done for the common poor Lankans – and what he is constantly striving to do – in his brief tenure …… is conveniently forgotten by this writer.
–
AKD has gone against several dictates of the IMF that Ranil agreed to …….. to give some relief to the poorest Lankans that were overlooked by all the previous leaders/governments. Those leaders/governments could overlook them because their leaders/representatives delivered their vote as a block-vote to the highest bidder for ministerial positions and perks.
–
The hard-working poor went along with it ……… because there was no viable choice. …… The choice was always tweedle dee or tweedle dum.
–
Until in a rare stroke of luck for the nation/people ………. AKD appeared and offered/presented an alternative.
–
The great shape the economy is in and the hard work AKD has done to put things right …… has been noted by the IMF and the WB.
–
Local pundits didn’t have a clue then ……. don’t have a clue now.
–
They just persevere in the same mindset …… pushing the boulder up the hill ……… over and over and over ……….

(continued from comment on Ellalan). If Ellalan or Manu Needhi Cholan were noted for their impositions of the Manu Dharma, they are NOT just rulers in modern terms where the Caste system is seen as an abominable form of slavery. Given the lack of a Tamil history written prior to 18th century, what is written about figures like Ellalan are derived from the Mahwamsa, the Rajavaliya and other Sinhalese/Pali Budhhist texts and not from Tamil sources. Thambimuttu’s Tamil Nationalist history book written in 1940 stresses this lacuna and claimed to write a history of the “Dravida” of Lanka from prehistoric times. Prof. Pathmanathan’s new book is a more professional attempt in this direction. Interestingly, no noted historians of Sinhalese ethnicity were invited to the recent book launch!
So, it is not only sinhalese who thrive on Mahawamsa stories, but also Tamils and Tamil history writers. Similarly, neither Tamils, nor Sinhalese follow the wish of DutuGemunu as stated in the Mahawamsa.
Why is it that our community commentators fail to see the beam in our eyes while always seeing it in the eye of the other community? This is why there is ethnic strife in this land. Usually, what aspects are true of the Sinhalese (in bigotry, jingoism etc.,) are equally found among the Tamils, but further exacerbated by the negative vestiges of Manu Dharma that are still pervasive in Tamil culture.

The execution of the son of Ellalan when the cow rang the Bell is extolled in Hindu literature, in honouring Manu Needhi Cholan (and Ellalan who is often identified with the Cholan), as an exapmple of the strict application of the Manu Dharma. The execution of the prince is presented as consistent with Manu Dharma because it is claimed to fulfill the king’s highest duty to provide absolute and impartial justice (Sama Needhi), which required a life to be paid for with a life under the law.
However, Vedic literature and Hindu law generally place a much higher value on human life than on animal life. In the Manusmriti, the penalty for accidentally killing an animal is typically a fine or a religious penance (prayaschitta), not execution.
So, the story of the Bell and the Hindu king executing the heir to the thrown are in fact NOT consistent with Manu Dharma and Hindu Lore. More probably, the king wanted to eliminate his son who had become too ambitious and was seen by him as a threat to him and the crown.
