An Open Letter To The Chinese Ambassador In Sri Lanka

By Liyanage Amarakeerthi

Prof. Liyanage Amarakeerthi

His Excellency, Mr. Yi Xianliang

Ambassador,

Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka

Dear Mr. Xianliang,

I hope this finds you well. I hope very much that you are extremely happy about Sri Lankan political mess to whose making you have contributed as well. I am a Sri Lankan citizen, a university professor and an honest tax payer and, by extension, a committed contributor to the huge repayment installments of the loans we have taken from your country.

I have seen the Hambantota Harbour from where you are able to launch military-naval activities of the Indian Ocean. You know what? I am extremely grateful to you for holding India at bay – I mean quite literally at ‘the Bay of Bengal.’ I have also seen the Shangri-La Hotel by the Galle Face Green – an imposing building that belittles the statue of our beloved former Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike. Recently, our equally beloved former secretary of defense, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa held one of his political meetings at Shangri-la. Our villagers praise you to the sky for letting him have that epoch-making meeting at Shangri-La. Since those villagers sing your praise in Sinhala you might not understand it. Here I am reporting the facts to you. You know what your Excellency- if you help our hero GR to come to power you are certainly opening a crucial niche in the market for another Chinese product: White Van. Make them reliable, and user-friendly at night. Slightly narrower with better ground clearance would be better so that those vans can traverse narrow and pot-holed streets on which normally under-paid journalists live.

Speaking of Shangri-La, your excellency, we did not bother about who owns that prime piece of land because you have come here to save us from the West and also from the North – the immediate north-India. India gave us Buddhism. But now, in order to protect that Buddhism, even from India, we need China. I know that you have brought us nothing but China. For example, even a little toy that my daughter plays with is from China. They are very good. For one thing, they break quickly so that my daughter does not have to play with a single set of toys for a long time. I go shopping in my own home town and buy some other toys which are also from China.

Apart from my daughter’s toys and the white vans I want you to export to us in future, I have another attachment to China. I am a big fan of Chinese literature. In my courses in comparative literature I often use Chinese literary works in Sinhala translations and Chinese literary theory in English translations. I do not read Chinese. But I am familiar with scholarly books by Stephen Owen, Earl Minor and others who have written wonderfully about Chinese literature and theory. I use some Chinese films in my classes, and To Raise the Red Lantern, Red shogun, and Farewell My Concubine are my all-time favorites.  And there are many others that you might not particularly like because, as any good art work does, they are critical of the status quo of the society of their origin, i.e. the China you are ‘ambassadoring’ here.

So, your Excellency, you can see that I am more than qualified to write this letter to you. I am reporting a certain sentiment prevalent in my country these days. Following observations are not necessarily mine. Thus I have heard – to use a phrase found in canonical Buddhist texts:

Rumour has it that you are behind some of the political dealings taking place in our country today. You must have seen, if you have good Sinhala translators in the embassy, our beloved former minister SB Dissanayake trying to cut a deal with a parliamentarian on the opposite side. Did you see the number? I do not know how to write that number here. It is about RS 500 millions. How did they get that kind of money? India is known to be stingy even though she wants to be the regional super power. The US is an already an imperialist in her retirement- at least she pretends to be so. For many Sri Lankans you are the only source of political bribe-money circulated in my country today. People claim that that your Port-city, the other half of Hambantota harbour, a part of Colombo harbour, and other stuff, known and unknown, are at stake, and you are required to throw in a bit of cash. That much I have heard both in august assemblies and on the street.

Prompted by those rumours, here I am writing to you. In addition to being a university professor, I am working to build a truly democratic society that respects the rule of law. “Democracy” and “the rule of law” might not mean much in China. Over there, perhaps “rule by law” matters the most (That is also an argument heard everywhere in Sri Lanka.) But here, in my country, we have a long history of democracy- no matter how flawed that democracy is. If “democracy” sounds like something “crazy” to you, let me tell you this: some of us are working to build a socialist Sri Lanka. Does “socialist” sound familiar to you, your Excellency? Or is it already archaic in China? To achieve that (socialist Sri Lanka) I am working with a group of left parties. But if you throw in insane amount of Chinese money to our political scene, how can we practice principled politics? And you know very well that Embassies such as the US would not tolerate at least mildly socialist regimes. They are the ones who created the mass murderers such as Pinochets nearly everywhere. Now, despite your socialist history and the legacy of great Mao Zedong, you are bringing corrupted despots to power or supporting them to stay in power.

Your Excellency, if your money is used in the political game played here today, would you mind taking it back and holding onto it at least until the parliament of Sri Lanka resolves the crisis? After that you can invest that money in our country and bribe your way into winning huge development projects as you usually do (another fact heard on our streets), after the power struggles are settled domestically.

Please let us settle this issue ourselves and take your bribe-money back. If you happen to know other embassies that throw money into this insane game please forward this letter to them as well.

Thank you

Sincerely yours

Liyanage Amarakeerthi

Here’s to the hope that Professor Amarakeerthi writes an article about the money the US/UK/EU spent on regime change in 2015. Perhaps, the Professor can also talk about the money the MCC spreads on all the NGO’s that peddle their agenda.

Prof Amarakeerthi, the best way to keep China or India for that matter USA or any other is to settle Tamil problem by sharing power and territory in a fair and effective manner. All your efforts in attacking them is of no use with a disgruntled Tamil population demanding legitimate rights to rule themselves in their homeland. Please impress upon your Sinhala community to execute this as a priority as otherwise due to struggle between super powers for dominance in the island, sovereignty is going to be eroded with disgrace to Sinhalese as what happened in 1987. If Nandikadal lagoon was a disaster for Tamils, Hambantota lagoon will be no different for Sinhalese.

        Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam
Demalu live in five pockets in the country: Yapanaya, Tirikunamalaya, Madakalapuwa, Kandu Rata and Colomba. Can you tell us how we share power and territory in an effective manner?
        ————————————
Why should Sinhalayo share power and territory with descendants of invaders from Hindusthan and slaves brought from Hindusthan and dumped by Parangi, Olanda and Ingirisi bastards.
        ———————————
“Tamil population demanding legitimate rights to rule themselves in their homeland.”
Your real homeland is Tamil Nadu. Tamils cannot have two Homelands. Go there and fight against New Delhi to gain independence. Then you can rule anyway you like. The problem is Tamils are cowards and do not have guts to fight against New Delhi. They thought it will be possible to fight with Sinhalayo and grab a piece of land and tell the world that Tamils have a separate country but that attempt failed.

Eekel Guy, why are you frightened to write your racist rubbish in your name. Is it because you are living in a western country where you could be charged for hate. Have you not heard that it has been proved geologically that Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka were single land mass before being separated by sea upheaval confirming Tamil belief that they were part of ancient Tamil homeland of Kumari Kandam. Therefore what Tamils are demanding is the return of their lands which have been appropriated by Sinhalese. Also discovery of several urn burial sites in north western parts of the Island, last being at Ibbankatuwa near Galewela, and finding of potshards in northern province similar to those found in Tamil Nadu prove that it is the same people who lived in both sides of the divide and that they were of Dravidian ethnicity. It is confirmed by linguists that at one time all Dravidians spoke either Tamil or some form of Tamils. Elu is considered as proto-Tamil and not as proto-Sinhala. Two recent genetic studies have shown that the core genetic material of Sinhalese is south Indian. All these go to show that first immigrants to Sri Lanka were Tamil speakers of whom a section had evolved into Sinhala ethnicity with input from other south Indians, Bengalis etc. When Sinhala claim of Aryan connection had been blown to pieces now they are trying to link them with Balangoda man who is genetically different and the iron and stone tools unearthed showing similarity to those found in Africa suggesting that original inhabitants had moved to Sri Lanka from Africa. So please stop your racist claim that Tamils are invaders and Sinhalese are natives. Your arguments will hold only in a bigoted Sinhala gathering and not in an intellectual forum.

            Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam,
“All these go to show that first immigrants to Sri Lanka were Tamil speakers of whom a section had evolved into Sinhala ethnicity”
            ——————-
BS! Sinhala language has nothing in common with Tamil. Look at counting:
Sinhala: Eka, Deka. Thuna, Hathara, Paha
Tamil: Endu, Rendu, Moonu, Nalu, Anchi

Sinhala language is a mix of Tamil and Sanskrit. Always Sinhalese had the habit of aligning themselves with Aryans in music, dance etc though they were following Dravidian (Kerala and Tamil) customs in dress, food etc. In Sanskrit it is eyka, divi, thri, sadur, pancha, sada, saptha, ashta, nava, dasa etc. In Hindi it is ek, du, theen, char, panch etc. Do you not see a similarity between Sinhala and Sanskrit/Hindi. If you take Sinhala words at least 50% are similar to Tamil words either with same meaning or in few different meaning. Sinhlala script is copied from Malayalam. Do not try to distort the truth.

      Dear Professor,
I also would like to write to my fellow citizens of this very small beautiful island which inherited a wealth of human civilzation, human culture and human values for many centuries. We people have to realise that there is a danger to our country, to our people, to our wealth of human culture. We may have slight difference in our believes of god, religions, language and cultures but we are united that every one in this land should have their basic rights, and common that we should be respect the law and our law makers and our political and religious leadership should be honest, truthful and the justice should be respected. Unfortunately, both political and religious leadership are failed to guide the people in the right direction. So, it is the people you have a responsibility to correct our political and religious leadership towards the right path that we got through our civilzation. People should march to each of their Parliament members and force them to the principles and the political party they were elected. Similarly go to the President office and ask the president to remove the illegal appointment of new PM and the appointment of new ministers without the consent of parliament and take actin against those who bribed to get parliament members.

A classic satirical on the stalemate country is faced with. Same satirical shows(play) were seen at Lionel Wendt theatre during MARA regime. Enjoyed every bit on white van culture we have seen in the past and surplus money in circulation following the 26th October revolution. For what ? To buy Srilankan MP’s, Ministers, Deputy Ministers for rupees in hundreds of millions at auction house owned by B.R.

It would be nice if this letter were accompanied– better still, had been preceded– by letters of remonstrance to the diplomatic representatives of those external actors who have demonstrably and blatantly interfered over the past few days, going to the extent of specific political prescription and freezing/cutting funds.

Dear Dayan, please read what I wrote above to Prof Laksiri, which applies to you also. Do you want Sri Lanka to antagonise economically and militarily powerful nations and be reduced to a sorry state as in 1970-1977, where people searched dust bins for food.

More than the Chinese Yuan, it is more likely US Dollars that is doing the most damage. Hoarded money from atrocities committed by the previous (MR’s) regime. Probably embezzled money stacked away in foreign banks earning compounding interest, now time to invest to regain power the illegitimate way.Someday the truth will be out.

SL’s population is only 22 mil. whereas China’s is over a billion. All it takes is to get our lazy buggers to work hard and emulate them in their push to succeed. Study their business strategies and their people’s lifestyle. If they (the Chinese) can become a world power even whilst having with such a large population, certainly we too can learn a few tricks on how to succeed. I am sure they will be willing to share their knowledge. All it takes is a great yearning to get out of this economic mess. through sheer hard work and training in specialized fields, solidarity amongst all people rather than division, and a stable government with intelligent and selfless people to govern us. Our entire work attitude must change, no strikes in workplaces, increased productivity, and less holidays. Anyone willing?

All the money robbed by the known politicians had been deposited in western banks, definitely not in China. If western nations like to end these stalemate, they should help us in tracking these illegal Blackmoney. It is bit difficult to believe that China pump money to these rogues as Chinese President Xi Jingping is an anti corruption crusader. If someone from China help robbers to come back to power, Professor Amarakeerthi should report it to Chinese President directly.

I love your description and comparative narratives …..
China is doing business with weak countires with their mighty economic powers ..
Money can buy anything and any one .
Mahinda fell in love with china ..
    Why ?
He made a lot out of china in commissions.

I am shocked to see this letter from an academic. Amarakeerthi has not given any evidence to the accusation. People who accuse some Western governments or organizations in pressurizing the President, or interfering in Sri Lanka’s internal crisis at present, at least they cite those governments/organizations statements, threats and actions as evidence. If Amarakeerthi has some suspicions about China, of course he can express them, but addressing an open letter to the Ambassador by name is quite unacademic and absurd.

I was also intrigued by another matter. In his first paragraph, he introduces himself as a citizen, a professor and an ‘honest’ taxpayer. That’s all. Then in his seventh paragraph, he also says he is working with ‘a group of left parties’ to achieve a (socialist Sri Lanka) within brackets! Let me ask you Amarakeethi, on whose behalf and for what purpose are you working with these left groups. Is this the network that the CPA has launched? Do you or your affiliated organizations get any money from external sources?

“Amarakeerthi has not given any evidence”

      Dr Laksiri,

Before you conferred PhDs on Mahinda and Gotabaya ………… a murder and a crazed serial-killer ……. did you stop to gather evidence?

I don’t feel anger at what you – and Dayan – have been reduced to at this late stage in your life …….. to find some means of sustenance …………. but I feel pity

That you are fallen in to this plight ……… where you cannot even maintain a modicum of self-respect

      It’s just painful to watch

You should be commending Prof Liyanage Amarakeerthi for his bravery ………. and not taking pot shots at him ………….. to get into the good books of the Rajapakses

Prof Laksiri, by your puerile attempts, you are only bastardising yourself. It is well known about Chinese strategy worldwide of getting round corrupt heads of state by bribes and making them to agree to projects which only boosts their ego with little or no economic benefit, and subsequently when they are unable to repay the loan to demand for real estate for military and economic activity to benefit China. Recently Malaysia exposed this by confiscating the bribes taken by former head of state and cancelling projects started by China saying that they cannot afford it. If Malaysia can do it why not Sri Lanka. Problem is, Sri Lanka is playing a double game of telling India one thing and doing the opposite to counter Indian influence. This type of cheating game will not go for long and at one point Sri Lanka will have to face the consequence and be reduced to a pathetic position in disgrace.

Two learned academic professinals Dr. Dayan and Dr. Laksiri is defending the appointment of a Criminal (This is what President Sirisena said about Mahinda Rajapakse in 2015) is constitutional. One of them is an ambassdor and other one is an Australian citizen interfering our internal matters. These two are worse than Mahinda & Sirisena. What a Joke? Still they believe that 500 million to crossover to Sirisena is constitutional. The author has all the right to defend his country. None other than China recognised this appointment. It is an open invasion in our Matters by China.

    Dr Amarakeerthi,

//I have seen the Hambantota Harbour from where you are able to launch military-naval activities of the Indian Ocean.//

If Ranil was successful in selling the East Terminal to India, India too will be able to launch military-naval activities.

But I am sure, you do not have any issue with such a deal.

Note that it is Ranil who gave the Hambanthota harbour to China, not Mahinda. The previous government was able to pay more than 500 million US$ from 1600 million US$ loan.

  • 1
    2

Did you know that Ranil allowed selling prime land, in particular along the south coast and within the Galle port to foreigners during his 2001-2004 regime? Did you bother to write any diplomat in such instances?

If you failed to do so during the past, can I assume that you show a great degree of hypocrisy?

  • 1
    2

//….by extension, a committed contributor to the huge repayment installments of the loans we have taken from your country.//

You know that Chinese foreign loans are only 10% of our total foreign debt.

Would you write to other diplomats to inform them that you are a committed contributor to the huge repayment instalments of the loans we have taken from countries other than China?

    Dear Author, and all Participants,
The Learned elites, the opportunist politicians, and the racist ethnic citizens,
It is now too late to learn from Literature of China, of India, and of the United Kingdom that was taught in all schools in your region. It is a pity you all missed the lessons learnt reading these valuable Literature. At least if you are lazy to read or you are not interested in reading Literature, you should have watched some good movies that are produced for the benefit of the young how a villain gets vanquished! Non of the reading nor the movies seems to have produced any good effect in any of the responsible Leaders in Sri Lanka. But one thing is for sure, you Sri Lankans have developed the role of the villain very well and accepted it as the best role for your Leaders!
