Anti-Muslim Measures In The Name Of National Security

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Never in the history of Sri Lanka, since the arrival of Muslims in circa 8th century, did this entrepreneurial community experience such a stressful period of existence as it is experiencing today. The community is essentially facing an existential crisis. Politicised Buddhism in bed with Islamophobia has metamorphosed into an anti-Muslim ideology especially since 2009, that it has no tolerance for anything that is Islamic or Muslim in this country. The One-Country-One-Law (OCOL) slogan is that ideology’s newly discovered propaganda weapon to mislead the Sinhala Buddhists, trap power hungry politicians, and confront and eliminate eventually all socio-economic, cultural and political phenomena that bear any Islamic or Muslim semblance. Buddhist supremacists. married to this ideology, are on an ethnic cleansing mission. This is the reason why Muslims are facing an existentialist crisis today, after living cheek by jowl with Buddhists, Christians, Hindus and other religious and non-religious groups for more than a millennium. Unless an enlightened leadership emerges to warn and educate the Buddhist masses in particular about the dangers inherent in this poisonous ideology the future of this nation will not be one of “prosperity and splendour” as the President promised, but more realistically, of misery and gloom.

The latest set of measures announced by the Minister of Public Security, in the wake of the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI), and which is yet to be released to the public in its entirety, are intended to accomplish at least three objectives. Firstly, those measures would go to some extent to appease the supremacists and satisfy their Islamophobic appetite so that they would continue to back the ruling regime. Secondly, by picking only those recommendations that deal with the philosophy, objectives and methodology of the killers and their supportive organizations, by ignoring those recommendations that call for the ban on extremist Buddhist groups like Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), and by recommending some ill-thought out preventive measures such as the banning of burqa and madrasas, the regime shows no interest in the larger question of bringing to justice those who masterminded the Easter massacre, and funded and facilitated the operation. The entire Kattankudy and those who knew Zahran personally would vouch for the fact that he was absolutely incapable of planning and executing such a complex operation, even though he had the motive. The government’s lackadaisical approach to this vital question has obviously angered the Catholic church, and the Archbishop has every reason to argue that the report is incomplete and he may even go international and plead for justice. And thirdly, by focusing on Muslims, the regime is trying to deflect the rising criticism and opposition against its own failure to deliver what it promised to the people before coming to power. The economy is contracting, country is facing financial bankruptcy, households are finding it extremely hard to make both ends meet, foreign relations are in shamble and uncoordinated and ad hoc infrastructural development has destroyed the nation’s ecological balance. It is to hide these facts from the public and divert its attack on the regime, Muslims have become the scapegoats.

What will the proposed measures by the minister going to achieve? Consider the issue of banning burqa and niqab, which is yet to be approved by the cabinet. If those two pieces of female attire is a security threat then the yellow robe of a Buddhist monk should have been banned in 1957, because it was a monk Somarama Thera, who concealed his gun under that robe and assassinated Prime Minister Bandaranaike. Today’s weapons of mass destruction are produced in so many shapes and sizes that they don’t need a burqa or niqab to hide them.

However, these two pieces of cloth are novelties introduced only after 1980 as a result of the “Black Wave” that spread to many parts of the Muslim world after the Islamised Revolution of Iran in 1979. They are alien to the cultural climate of multicultural Sri Lanka. Yet, it is an individual’s choice and wearers may argue quite rightly that is their human right that has been invaded by this ban. That argument must be confronted and defeated. Although an individual has a right to wear what he or she wants, that individual is a member of a society, which is multicultural in Sri Lanka. Humans are social animals. If what I wear becomes a hindrance to my social relations and keep me isolated then I am forced to choose between my dress and preference for isolation. This is the dilemma the Muslim community faced when these novelties entered the community decades ago. Does Islam encourage social isolation of Muslims? In other words, does Islam promote self-alienation? Had Muslim leadership at that time initiated a dialogue with the community on these questions and educated the fashion seekers the community could have avoided the ban by government today. At least this writer raised that issue almost 20 years ago. The failure of leadership has created numerous problems to Muslims and female attire is one of them. The minister should withdraw his proposal and encourage the community to solve it from within.

Similarly, is his decision to abolish over 1000 elementary Quranic schools that teaches the kids nothing more than to read the Holy text in Arabic, and memorize certain essential recitations required for performing the obligatory duties in Islam. If that part of teaching is considered by the minster as fundamentalism and extremism then the minister’s cerebral capacity should be re-examined. He seems to have a confused notion about madrasas. Madrasas are all not of the same category. It is true that even the more structurally modern and prestigious ones in Sri Lanka need reforms in their curriculum and methods of teaching. Sri Lanka does not need foreigners to come and teach in their madrasas. There are adequate number of local scholars who could perform even a better job than foreigners who come from a mono-cultural environment. But, once again these are internal matters to be left to the community. What the minister’s highhanded approach would accomplish will be to start parents to impart Quranic teaching to their kids at home with private tutors. Many tutors would obviously volunteer to teach freely and expect to be rewarded in the Hereafter. The minster should understand that Muslims under no circumstances would sacrifice Quranic education.

The most dangerous of the government measures is to open rehabilitation centres to brainwash those the authorities would consider extremists, fundamentalists and terrorists. One is not sure whether the minster concerned understands the difference among these groups. Leaving that aside, the idea of ‘moulding’ the Muslims was first put forward soon after that public rally organised in Kandy by the Secretary of BBS, Galagoda Atte Gnanasara on 7 June 2019. He was obviously modelling his plan on China’s experiment with Uyghurs. The government, which is not going to ban BBS, as publicly announced by the Minister of Education, Professor G. L. Peiris, is making Gnanasara’s wish a reality. Accordingly, the security forces could arrest any Muslim under any pretext, deem that person an extremist, fundamentalist or terrorist and throw him or her inside that camp. When they come out alive after a few years will they remain a Muslim? The government following its ‘predator friend’ China is engaging in institutional brain washing.

The country needs an enlightened leadership that believes in the plural nature of Sri Lankan society. Pluralism is the country’s destiny. The ancient Buddhist monarchs understood this and managed it so magnificently that the country prospered and even became an exemplary model for others to follow. The supremacists of today are no doubt leading the nation along a suicidal path. The anti-Muslim measures and their anti-minority stance are under international watch. We hope the UNHCR Council resolution would send a clear message to the rulers that they would be made accountable and cannot shelve their crime against minorities under the domestic matter cupboard.

The words multicultural comes from the New school in New York city and took off in the 1980’s. All societies are based on the winner takes it all mentality. Specifically in the Muslim ones where if your not a follower of camel jockey muhammad your treated like a dog. Jews came to America and wanted to destroy WASP (White Anglo Saxon protestant ) hegemony hence introduced multiculturalism. They were successful in their goal.

Mr. Ameen, You are being distracted from the big question as to who was behind behind the ISIS claimed Easter Crime in 2019 in Sri Lanka and it GEOPOLITICS. We know that there is a hybrid war in the Indian Ocean region by the US against China and the rise of Asia as the hub of the world economy
Why did Zaharan and another bomber bomb China’s Shangri La Hotel if their real target was Christians and Buddhists? Chinese are communists! The book “ISIS is US: the Shocking truth behind the army of Terror” by Wayne Madson et al. Details how Saudi Arabia funded a flood of Quranic schools in Pakistan during the Cold War on the instructions of the CIA which was occuying Afghanistan. CIA which was weaponizing Islam and Buddhism to fight Godless Communism and socialism and National Liberation movements in the Third World.

Mr. Ameen: Please see the book “Cold War Monks: Buddhism and America’s Secret Strategy in Southeast Asia”. (Yale University Press 2017).
Muslims should hold their corrupt politicians who got massive funds from Saudi for Kathankudi Zahara to stage the Easter attacks so US could get MCC and SOFA signed and set up a military base in Sri Lanka purportedly to fight IS terror and defend Christians!
Why is the corrupt politician M.L.M HIzbullah who got billions fron Saudi Govt. which murdered Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, not in Prison, He met Saudi operatives soon after the bombings in Passikudha. while another Hijaz Hizbullah is in Prison. Is this a joke? RIshad Bathudeed and Hakeem all got massive funds from Saudi to protect Zaharan and sit with Corrupt Bondscam Ranil and US puppet Mangala and now we have the cover up PCoI report! Please hold your corrupt and Greedy US-Saudi funded leaders accountable for the plight of the Muslims instead of constantly whinging about Buddhism!
And protest outside the US and Saudi Embassy that is using the ISIS narrative to spread Islamophobia globally!

What a disgusting comment. Shows how much hatred you sinhala buddhist racists have been indoctrinated with by your racist politicians and backward monks. I truly have no expectations from criminals like you. I can insult your buddah, but I’m glad I’m a muslim and Islam prohibits me from insulting (not disagreeing) the idols and objects worshipped by others as their deities. No wonder this country is ever in a perpetual state of hopelessness and loss.

    Dear Dr Ali

    Thank you.

    What you suggesting by saying
“This is the reason why Muslims are facing an existentialist crisis today, after living cheek by jowl with Buddhists, Christians, Hindus and other religious and non-religious groups for more than a millennium”.

Did you recently check with the TNA that you have permission to speak Tamil let alone practice religion your own way in “their” spaces?…ending land powers in the North and East…then all make sense..but then included others as well???????

What did the SL Christians do to you??

I am an atheist/a person who do not discuss religions and what we do to you personally?? I may refuse to work with your wife/daughter/sister/grand children if they turn up to my work place with full face coverings because I believe is not right for human interactions??

I may pray Allah should I get permission from you?? any membership issues?? no one owns religions??

I think you as a person prejudiced to others and defending your prejudice / non compliance to the law and order with all other artificial barriers? but you live amongst all of us every sec??

Have you sought help on this subject of non conformity….we all do where we go to respect others too not just limited to SL.

    Rumble 2021,
I ask you the same question “What did the SL Christians do to you??” What did the SL Muslims do to you? What is the SL Hindus do to you? What did the Colombo Tamils do to you to drag them and burn them in Colombo streets in 1958? What did the upcountry Tamils do to you when you kill them in 1983?
What did the Jaffna library do to you to burn the library?
Every one is asking who funded and organised Saharan to target Christians but not Buddhists?

    • 5
      3

Zaharan is not so dumb like LTTE to attack Buddhists. They don’t want to end up like them.

If the attack on Katuwapitiya church didn’t happen the ethnicity of most victims of the attack would be ….let’s say……..different. Apparently it was not the target. The target was a Tamil mass in a Negombo church. Unfortunately there were army checkpoints along the way (Sirisena and family flew overseas and were expected back anytime) so the bomber went to a near-by church.

        4

        GATAM,
Where is Saharan living now? Saharan did not bomb churches on behalf of Muslims but on behalf of a powerful Buddhist politician.

        GATAM
Whether Zaharan’s target was Tamil Christians or Sinhala Christians or both, who retaliated against the Muslims after the attack? Neither Tamil Christians nor Sinhala Christians, it was the Sinhala-Buddhists. Sinhala & Tamil Christians were attacked and the Sinhala Buddhists reacted. Dumb Zaharan may have never expected that.

      • 2
        4

        Fathima,

You are absolutely correct; the Targets were only Tamil Churches (& tourist hotels). But remember, Saharan cannot get credit for selecting non Sinhala Churches. List were selected by both, Yahapalanaya Aanduwa and the Joint Comedy Club. Saharan was only a doll on the thread, in bombing. Irrelevant of who picked the targets, he is spending his life there as “Onanclass Suladal Manan(Minor No.1 )” with his 72. ” Earlier he was on the thread of Aanduwas, now his chicks are on his leash.

Whether it is denying minorities the right to bury their dead, as advised by international organizations, and medical and scientific institutions, implementing policies targeting Muslims, imprisoning Muslim professionals without valid reason, because pro Rajapaksa media reported unsubstantiated lies, looking the other way when anti Muslim hate is being spread about wanda pethi, and charmed toffees to make the Sinhala women barren, leading to mob violence against Muslims, anyone with half a brain can see the consistent pattern here, see that only Muslims are the target of the RAJAPAKSA RACIST POLICIES AND HATE CAMPAIGN.
The Muslims have been the scapegoats to win elections, and distract an easily distracted population, from failed policies, corruption, and the eroding of our democratic rights. It is so serious that international human rights bodies have been bringing focus to it, and international media have reported it from every corner of the world.
It is all an organized effort by those who want divisions in this country. From racist Ministers to trained anti Muslim trolls you see appear like cockroaches in some of these articles, some pretending to be Muslim scholars citing violent verses, mostly a load of BS to influence like minded Islamphobes, it is part of a larger hate campaign waged by the Rajapaksa’s and they are in collaboration with the others with similar intent around the world.

      Continued:

The Sri Lankan economy is once again in poor shape, no more revenue from those Arab Muslim nations, we are scraping the bottom of the barrel, but our leaders keep distracting the people with anti Muslim policies.

The Village idiots are running this country, and their small minded racist tactics are keeping their extremist Buddhist base happy. This has been going on for a while, and the question is HAVE THESE RACIST POLICIES HELPED OUR NATION PROGRESS AND PROSPER? We are still a third world broke nation with corrupt leaders, and constantly putting out our begging bowls for hand outs, from nations we dislike and refuse to cooperate with.

Is this the Rajapaksa formula for successful governance?

        Dear Ashan

It was the rural Majority Sinhalese, Tamils (rural caste and estate) who were oppressed by the ghetto makers such as FP/TULF and Muslim parities pre-post Independence.

When we design policies that will bring justice to all is when the Ghetto makers went about their mischiefs landed where we are…now the Sinhalese have said they had enough…is unfortunate we all have to pay a price for it……even though we were not party to this..if we ever were that was because this was done at gun point in Jaffna by these thugs.

There are various schools of thought on ISIS caliphate in SL, Saudi funding etc etc but it has also come to light that Zaharan & his ragtag band had dealings with GR & even in the payroll of the Defence Ministry. The fact, whether this friendship developed during the fight against the LTTE & for some reason the funding continued after the war, is uncertain but it appears GR did associate Zaharan & it was Zaharan who got screwed in the end (not vice versa) because the only person to benefit from the bombing was GR. Then there is also the fact that while the average Muslim is at the receiving end of the Sinhala Buddhist wrath, Muslim politicians have also been benefitting & ignoring the plight of their brethren.

At the end of the day, racial bigotry & divisions affect the average citizen, irrespective of race & religion, while for rich Muslim politicians & oligarchs, life has always been better. Certainly, there is no racial discrimination when it comes to corruption.

Agreed with Dr. Amir’s point. But we need to look at the reality too; Aanduwas thrived with divide and rule for nearly a century in its democratic history, from 1931. To look from Tamils’ side alone, Anduwas used Citizenship, Tamils’ Call Federal Sates, Sinhala Only,………,LTTE, Sovereignty etc. to win elections. What I am telling is Aanduwa’s inventions are unlimited to divide and rule. It is Corona Virus; quickly mutate to survive the situation. The man, who went to UNCHR with the call of Human Rights for the JVP girls he appeared in courts, set the Sinhala Buddhists against the 32 nations who earned the victory for him against LTTE with call of “Sovereignty”. Now his sovereignty call has superseded his Human Right call, when the Human right is no longer for the JVP girls, but for the 90 thousand widowed Tamil war victims. As long as the Sinhala Buddhists are majority, this near a century divide rule cannot be reversed. What we have seen is only progress, but not in anytime of Lankawe Democratic history this nature has enshrined or dormant, but always rampant and explosive.

“Vaerumayil Orrumai Kaanpaum”. (Let us all be who we are; then let us unite for our common progress). Becoming “Singapore” is only a mirage for us all. But “Malaysia – Singapore” is a realistic approach. We all have to go to the Independent judge……… UNRC. Let us get our self-determinations recognized. Then we return home and make pacts among us & grow.

Agree with division but NO to Malaysia-Singapore. It must be mono ethnic. Otherwise it is the same problem in two countries.

If Sri Lanka is truly multi ethnic and multi religious country, then one country, one law is not practical.

As the writer rightly points out any offending or dissenting practices or views should be solved by that community from within.

That is in a nutshell, ‘”What celebrating diversity” really means!

Ali Sabry seems to be after another crooked deal. Earlier, he tried to appoint Muslim lawyers as Police-Inspectors. This time he laments about Sri Lanka’s judge-population ratio compared to developed countries.
    .
Sri Lanka – 15 judges per one million inhabitants. (population: 21.8 million)
    Number of cases pending: 800,000
Number of cases filed a year: not-known to me
    .
    Let’s take India.
India – 20 judges per one million inhabitants (population: 1.3 billion)
Number of cases pending: 40 million (4-crore)
Number of cases filed a year: 50 million (5-crore)
    .
Given the (ill)reputation of Sri Lanka’s judiciary due to its close links with top politicians, I have a few productive suggestions to reduce pendency without increasing the number of judges.
    1) Judges have a tendency to drag cases involving politicians for years and years before finally acquitting them. This is a sheer waste of time. Therefore, the judges should be instructed to acquit politicians, their kith & kin, friends, politically backed minorities, police officers & government officials, after 3 adjournments, maximum. Don’t worry. “Justice hurried isn’t justice buried”.
    2) Police should be encouraged to not file cases against cricketers, lawyers, doctors and businessmen, as in any case, judges consider them above the law.
    3) The Attorney General should be charged Rs. 1 million each time he withdraws or loses a case.

I think the Rajapaksas and their hooligans are sad to have missed their “annual ethnic riot” last year. As a result, last year Muslims couldn’t receive their annual ethnic compensations from the government. Every year, Muslim houses, Estate Tamil houses and at least 2 to 3 Muslim business establishments are burnt by fire. I have no idea who is responsible for these fires.
The Rajapaksas have successfully internationalized race and religion-based false accusations by Tamils and Muslims against Sinhalese Buddhists.
They are now trying to stir up racial and religious hatred this year too, by pitting Muslims, Catholics and Tamils against Sinhalese Buddhists.
When the President and the PM allowed burials as requested by Muslims, I guess they expected Sinhalese Buddhists to come to streets protesting against their decision. It didn’t happen. Then they tried to misuse Kekille recommendations of the SPCoI to create a rift between Sinhalese Buddhists and Muslims. It didn’t happen. Then they arrested Asath Sally expecting a big excitement from the Sinhalese Buddhists. It didn’t happen either.
Open your eyes Sinhalese people and correctly identify your actual enemy. You must understand that you have elected your NEMESES as rulers.

“an anti-Muslim ideology especially since 2009”, is like letting the cat out of the bag!
    .
I tell this with sadness, though I am happy to have heard it from an ardent Muslim guardian.
    .
Look at the date: 2009. Does this ring a bell. Yes, 2009 was the date LTTE was crucified for defending Tamils.
    .
Tamils were being marginalised since 1948. Muslims were happy reaping the benefits of ‘divide and rule’ skillfully employed by the unscrupulous Sinhalese.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“no interest in the larger question of bringing to justice’.
Hope that the call for justice is not too late. Has justice ever prevailed in our country. Why the cry for justice only now.
(I would concede that it is never too late to call for justice.)

“The country needs an enlightened leadership”.
Sorry, Ameer Ali. Are you asking us to wait till Lord Buddha is re-born. Can’t it be achieved by the lesser mortals we have among us today.

    My take on this..

    Part 1:
    1. There is no clear proof before and after the Easter Sunday attack what is the ideology, belief or motive for a targeted mission on selected religious places
    2. The financial support, training and operational leadership for the whole mission from outside the country (with or without foreign intelligent services involvement) is clear.
    3. The makeshift training camps found in deep south is a clear indication SL intelligence services main focus in north & east leave the rest of the country free for any clandestine operations is a utter failure of the security arrangement.

    • 0
      0

      Part 2:
      4. India not part of this game plan as it is sharing intelligent report with Sri Lankan authorities
      5. The government not taken any preventive action based on intelligent sharing of a vital piece of information still puzzling me whether Govt of SL itself part of the game plan
      6. How they radicalized (even the educated ones) more than one person to commit for a suicide mission? How these attackers convince, and belief attack is appropriate for the Muslim community and their family members?

      • 0
        0

        Part 3:
        7. The mission sole purpose to build growing tension between communities (never mind between which communities). The peace and stability of this island is a hindrance in the world theater for some nations. That is evidently successful with aftermath of the attack and present govt series of measures.
8.After LTTE, if Muslim got involved in any clash can quickly escalated to a full fledged problem and even convert to an arm struggle with the Muslim nations support a reality rather than revive the Tamil militant group as they don’t have a base support system now.
        9. There is no connected mission elsewhere in the world linked to Sri Lanka as a transit place either.

        • 0
          0

          Part4:
          10. Therefore, when there is a reasonable ground to believe foreign intelligent involvement, smaller nations like SL will go silence rather than protest it.
          11. If Christians provoked and started attacking Muslim religious and business places, then it may help western Christian nations to voice support while Muslim nations to help Muslims. This will be an entirely new geo-political problem compare to India& China rivalries in the Asian continent. Luckily this is not happened.
          12. In the middle hard-line Sinhala-Buddhist who is not the affected community came out strongly and dictate terms to the rest is where GR survival depended upon because of the mentality of this group. i.e. We are the sole group own the country and rights to dictate terms to others by force or any other means.

          • 1
            0

            Part 5:
            13. The important reality is SL security aperture can be hoodwinked to create mayhem in this island when there is a foreign hand involved at any given time. This is the fact forgotten when people hand over the leadership to GR and believe he can stop anything and everything when it comes to national security.
            14. What can prevent this island from further disaster a reality is only by ethnic harmonisation and equal rights to all.

On the other hand, a side note to the writer, if you truly belief every country should respect the belief of the individual and the person sentiments then please voice against in public for Muslim nations like Saudi Arabia forcing strict dress code like abaya even to foreigners against the individual belief (which is now considered to relax a bit)

            • 2
              2

              Dayan,
Sri Lanka has given equal rights to all.
In fact, Tamils and Muslims have more than equal rights. Tamils have been allowed to use a Malabari Customary law called ‘Thesawalamei’ that they brought when they came to Sinhale from Malabar which prevents non-Vellala Tamils owning land in Yapanaya and separate marriage laws for Muslims that allow Muslim men to marry more than one woman and marry underage women who are considered as children which is a violation of human rights.
Only a few opportunistic Tamil and Muslim politicians make noise saying that they do not have equal rights to get the sympathy from the International Community.

“14. What can prevent this island from further disaster a reality is only by ethnic harmonisation and equal rights to all.”

At least they do it openly, unlike some Sinhalayo. Don’t forget the Sinhala kings had even 50 wives.
What about Sinhala children who are abandoned in temples with old men ? Why don’t you talk about their human rights?

@ Eagle Eye – What you said is correct and in constitution. but, the problem is what we practice in reality is far from what is there as law. Lets be fair. We introduce Sinhala only and pay the price for it. Then JR for political gain start the black July riot and country back track for more than 30 years, etc. Even in day to day life communities might face issues which is not highlighted as major issues. We don’t know how many more stupid actions politicians going to take in future to take the country backwards.

The Thesawalamai and muslim marriage are issues can be nullified or altered in consultation with concerning parties if required through parliament in conjunction with international laws and treaties we are signed off. But, there is no strong voice to-date unless you are interest to buy a land in north or planning to have a life with more than one wife legally which I find it difficult even with one.

                Dear EE

I did not know one can have 4 wives in SL irrespective of religion. We need to change this law as is u draining woman’s right just as the Buarque does??

What are the chances of all SL’s meeting the Muslim girls and falling in love?

Why no International Woman rights groups shouting for equality and fairness and progress for our Sisters who happened to practice different religion we respect whole heartedly. We need to free them from this men who have access to all others now prohibit our rights?

Are the woman being used as baby making machines?? who are these people taking us and our citizens on a backward journey we do not openly discuss in our Nation…fear/threats…this is what happened to all the Muslim woman who spoke out in the west some got killed??

This is slavery? human rights abuse?? why UNCHR not focused on these issues? wasting time on not so futile matters??

OC we do not follow our kings on anything thank you. There were the biggest crooks/mafias who looted and slaved every human….is exactly what the TNA trying to do now….own Tamil language that belongs to us all.
