Anura Kumara Dissanayake Comes To The Helm At A Vital Time For The JVP

By Kumar David

Prof Kumar David

Prof Kumar David

The JVP has made a good choice in Anura Kumara Dissanayake, not least because he shares with this columnist an excellent set of initials, AKD! He is known for his meticulous work and preparation on issues he raises in public or parliament, he is young (45) and promises stability for 15 to 20 years, and is said to represent the middle position in the party, (as NM did most of the time), so he will be able to bridge internal debates. By all reports he is prepared to rethink past mistakes and the brief reference he made to the national question in his acceptance speech (“We have failed to reach the Tamil people”) may signal better things to come.

A friend quipped to me that he would make a better Leader of the Opposition than the current one! There was a time when parliament was a forum of great tribunes, NM, Colvin, Pieter and SWRD; when they stood up, the chamber hushed; when they spoke, the nation listened. For decades thereafter it was a fish-market whose cacophony dismayed even schoolchildren. Recently Sumanthiran, Anura Kumara and a few others have begun to regain lost ground; in time they too may emerge as worthy tribunes. But I do not know the chap personally – JVP types are reluctant to enter into extended conversations with outsiders – so my impressions are superficial.

It will be better if I use this essay to think aloud about the party and the challenges it faces. To put it straight upfront: The crucial challenge is the interleaved issue of identity and role going into the 21-st Century. The JVP still retains a clear identity (the identities of the LSSP and CP have withered); but should it rigidly hold on to an ideology derived and inherited from the past or are there fundamental issues to rethink (parliamentary democracy, revolution, socialism, globalisation, and 21-Century world order)? As for its role, the JVP has had three distinct personas, ultra-left adventurism up to the early 1970s, Pol-Pottian cannibalism in the late 1980s, and from late-1990 to now, a democratic, left and parliamentary phase. Despite role transitions, the party has sustained a high degree of identity in its own mind and in the minds of the people. It is these two sides (identity and role) that the party will be forced to re-examine during the course of this year.

Old leader and the new leader

Old leader and the new leader

The leadership transition comes at a time when the JVP is going through a period of extended quietus and loss of parliamentary support. It has also suffered two heavy splits, one a welcome cleaning of the stables, the other a great pity; mad racist Weerawansa, and Frontline Socialists (Peratugami), respectively. The split with Peratugami is not fundamental and can be overcome IF good sense prevails; I say this with great confidence as I have talked a lot with these excellent young comrades. What do they want? (a) A greater degree of internal democracy and transparency in decision making; (b) a candid review of the mistakes made in the democratic period – was in right to enter Cahndrika’s government, was it right to support General Fonseka, what about the national question, and so on. Unless the new leadership makes a sweep towards internal democracy, and unless it opens up a discussion of the last 15 years (the errors of 1971 and 1989-90 have already been discussed internally) the party will not go forward, Peratugami or no-Peratugami.

The other matter on which I wish to make a brief comment is a life and death theoretical issue for modern Marxism and 21-Century socialism. This is not yesterday’s world, this is not 1917 which was probably a unique event, this is not pre-1949 Maoist China. On the other hand neo-liberalism has crumbled; it was been defeated by people all over the world. Global capitalism is going through its greatest structural crisis since the Great Depression and there are no signs of a sustained recovery – if at all we only see a Wobble-U effect, sporadic spurts and spluttering downturns. Income and wealth inequality has never been so great at any previous time in human history. Marx will say “I told you so”; but the old bugger was unforgiving in his demand for intellectual honesty. So he will kick all of us, and the JVP, in our butts and thunder: “Get off your arses you thick headed mutts; don’t repeat what I said as though it was the Bible; think, look at your times, open your eyes”.  That then is the theoretical frontier facing the JVP as it goes forward into this century. It is too big a topic for me to say anymore within the few miserable words that the CT Editor permits me.

Lastly, I will get my point across on political role, or action, in as few words as possible; an example helps. The LSSP ran into a midlife crisis when it reached the age of, say 40, if we count from the early 1930s. The crucial issue was the relationship to state power. The LSSP and CP made the fateful decision to carry through the transition to socialism by alliances, intervention through parliamentary mechanisms, a Republican Constitution, land reform and takeover of the commanding heights of the economy (estates), reform of tenant-landlord relations in housing, and most significant of all NM’s budgets to put the economy on a new keel. This was the grand, indeed colossal project the Old Left (not the pigmy caricatures of the Dead-Left) set itself. The project failed for two reasons; the outside world had changed dramatically and the second reason flowed from this; this method of reaching socialism was undoable. Not only China, but also social change ongoing in the West, shows us that more complex pathways of class and international alliances and statist tracks have to be pursued to reach a better world.

The bottom line of this story for the JVP is that its principal role in this historical period is an oppositional one – Oh if only the LSSP had remained an opposition party all along, right up to now! Brief spells in governments are another matter, but the JVP’s main role in this historical period is long term work among the people to expose and keep the swine (UPFA, UNP and Fonseka) in check. Making and breaking short-term links for tactical reasons is of course essential, but that’s another story.

I close by congratulating Comrade Anura Kumara Dissanayake and wishing the JVP success.

Yes Anna. He is the only hope.

Ranil is a puswedilla, Chandrika is a gasbag, Fonseka is a ganu hora and Sobhita is a yellow millionaire.

All AKDs are such brilliant people, he is the only hope.

Anura Disanayake (AD) is seen to be a good representative of the rural folks. I wish we had more of them – to stand against highly corrupted politicians. People in this country perhaps can keep hopes on AD. Most of the time – he addresses every aspects of an issue – that is what matters. He is not purchasable as was the case with Wimal Buruwanse.Nor would AD betray his principles. Lately the issue raised against Bribery commission, I found was a great reveal brought to surface by JVP.

SRI Lanka needs a NEW and UN-CORRUPT YOUNGER GENERATION of CLEAN political leaders today.
JVP should become the ALTERNATIVE to the 2 corrupt political parties and their DICTATORIAL leaders – the UNP and SLFP – that have dominated and ruined Sri Lanka since independence in 1948.
Today Sri Lanka is NOT ECONOMICALLY independent. It is highly dependent on China and corrupt and cleaning up CORRUPTION should be the top priority of the JVP now. The UNP with its infighting and NO one in sight to take over from the dictator Ranil is finished in the short term and the time is right for the JVP to lead Lanka’s opposition together with TNA’s Sumanthiran.
SRI Lanka needs a NEW and UN-CORRUPT YOUNGER GENERATION of CLEAN political leaders and NOT the CORRUPT sons and dauaghters of corrupt crony politicians of the SLFP, UNP, Dead left parties..

          Dodo You are so right!

Sajith Premadasa who thinks that it is his birthright to lead UNP even after his lies about getting a degree from LSE were exposed, and all the other sons and daughters of corrupt politicians are a curse on the land..

Unfortunately Sinhalaya Modayas are living in cloud cuckoo land and think that Sinhala Buddhist Jarapassa with his Balu Sena and military business development model is their GOD-KING, and saviour of the moda Sinhala race! Jarapassa’s sons – Namal and his brothers and cousins are all on the make as a result Name of game: MONEY POLITICS!

why should he ? RW is not JVPer.

It is the radical group within UNP that should realize the current situation. Why RW should be accoutable for all the problems that fated the party during the 30 year old war time ?

Only problem I see in RW is – he is more into laws AND justices – people and ruling egoists are not very much into law and order.

      Good one KD!
Yes, indeed Anura Kumara would make a better opposition leader than UNP’s Ranil Wickramasinghe, Karu and Moron Sajith put together in the Diya-wenna parliament of uneducated crooks and vermin..
CONGRATULATIONS to AK and all the best to this young man and the JVP!

The challenges are many at this time and the JVP should rise to the occasion and build an Anna Hazare style political and social movement to clean the rotten political and governance culture of Sri Lanka which is the ROOT CAUSE of ALL CURRENT PROBLEMS in Lanka.

      1. Sri Lankans needs the JVP to play the role of the Aam Aadmi Party in India and call for a clean up of POLITICAL CULTURE and CORRUPTION.
The JVP has a far better analysis of political and economic corruption than does the UNP.
      2. Jarapassa’s secretary Lalith Weeratunge promised CHAOS if there is a war crimes investigation on the Mahinda Rajapakse or JARAPASSA regime. The allusion is of course to SIRIYA’s dictator – Bashar Al Azard and the unholy mess there which has turned 2 million Siriyans into refugees. Rajapaksa will not give up power in Sri Lanka. HE WILL DESTROY SRL LANKA FIRST as Assad is doing at this time in Siriya. The post-war militarization of Sri Lanka by Goon Gota is precisely for this reason. LET THERE BE NO MISTAKE – the Jarapassa regime has delusions of grandeur.
      3. Partnerships are another challenge for a renewed JVP: best to encourage the Frontline Socialists to rejoin the JVP.
      4. Read the external scenario wisely and use it for internal change in Sri Lanka. The US is today far more interested in South and East Asia than in the Mid East now that its energy future is assured with all the new shale oil and gas in north America and China is moving. Also, India will not let what is happening in Siriya happen in its back yard in Lanka so Lalith’s threat of chaos will back fire on the Jarapassa regime..
      5. Jarapassa’s days are numbered and the Jarapassa RATS are squirming in their hole but JVP needs to strategize and ensure a QUICK EXIT STRATEGY for the corrupt and criminal Mahinda Rajapaksa regime!

    POLPOT KILLED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS
JVP COULD NOT EVEN MANAGE A 1000

THERE WERE POLPOIST CANIBALS; IN THE FORM OF THE GOVERNMENT THAT CULLED 40 000 YOUTH TO EXTINGUISH THE UNSEEN ‘ENEMY’.

THE VAST MAJORITY WERE INNOCENT AND HAD NEXT TO NOTHING TO DO WITH THE UPRISING, THE ”GOVERNMENT’S” (RATHER THE CANNIBALS) ATTITUDE WAS WITH EVERY 10 KILLED, IT WOULD ELIMINATE ONE TRUE JVPER.

Both the Government and the Tigers were true polpots, not sure who killed the most. Both of them are said to have ’causes’.

Unfortunately AKD will have to play by the rules – MR’s rules. MR’s rule is the only rule in Sri Lanka now. If AKD begins to rock MR’s boat, rest assured the white van will come a calling.

A simple and lucid analysis that has, generally, generated responses in similar vein.
The albatross that the JVP seems unable to shed is its history of violence from the late eighties that still appears fresh in the minds of rural Sri Lankans, particularly those of the majority Govigama caste who were often targeted purely because they belonged to that caste, it seems.

    • 0
      0

      That is some RUBBISH
Many rural youth happen to be Govi
President Premadasa was Dobi, Kumaratunga was Dura (JVP denying killing him)

We’ll, should have allowed some others to the top, then they would have got killed instead.
So the Matale mass grave is govigams killing bathgams.
So, the Govis killed 40 000 youth ?!??
      Dung theory !!

    • 0

How did the Govigama become the majority ??

The poor Vaddhas should have evicted them instead.

Marx and Lenin were never able to implement their ideologies and therefore never saw the disasters they brought on the masses. Its not the ruling classes ever sacrificed or were in want at anytime.

The UF reforms were implemented in a vacuum and we had no clue why we had to eat Kurakkan or stand in the bread line at 5 in the morning before going to school. We knew Anura Bandaranaiyake was not standing in any line and Chandrika was in Paris!

Each society and nation should be blessed with leaders who can think beyond their noses. We have been cursed, atleast for a few decades now.

Congratulations comrade Anura, you are a good choice made by the JVP. I hope you will have a broader vision to guide the party. You must also accept that you can’t do this battle alone. You were mislead by Chandrika and also Mahinda. If you want to win you can’t do this alone. You must go in for a wider and broader coalition,or else you will give another chance to this muderer and lier to continue with the family bandisam. Good luck to you and the party.

Among the wannabes this Kumara looks different in the sense that he has some appeal to the great majority of the inhabitant population which makes the ultimate decision.

To start with, he looks like one of this great majority.

Hopefully he has no blood on his hands from their killing spree in the eighties.

Other than that he doesn’t carry any baggage unlike CBK. SF, ex CJ Sobitha, or anyone else.

But the problem is would the great majority of our inhabitants who are living in peace and harmony after three decades of TNA supported Terrorism and earning a few Dollars want to go back to a Cuba style future?……

Will Ranil’s LC pick him and tick him, although Ranil would love to get another lease..

One thing good is if the US , Cameron, Harper and Pillai roll Rakapaksa with the help of the UNP and the TNA, the country will be better off in the Hands of the JVP.

At least they won’t hand over the War Heroes to the Yanks and the British to hold War crime Trials in Hague.

Kumar David the sensible professor always come up with a sensible idea. He thinks Maduluwave Sobhitha Thera is the ideal common candidate for the presidency. In this article he does not say that Anura Kumara Dissanayake is suitable to run for the presidency but says that Anura is a capable person. I hope Anura will follow Prof. David’s advice and make the JVP more popular amongst all people not only Sinhalese. Anura being a Science Graduate will be the only educated person leading a political party in Sri Lanka at present. I do not for a moment think that Ranil’s Arts degree can be considered as a real degree. He entered the Asva Vidyalaya of the Colombo University which was a makeshift place to accommodate 1000s of arts students admitted to make Gopallawa’s Son Monty to be eligible to enter the university by the Sirima Government.

    Very good analysis Kumar David.
AKD is the right choice to lead the party.
Having said that we all know that JVP comrades are not
hungry or greedy for power. Provided a little more democratic
change in the party this party can give a bloody good fight to any popular leader simply because of their integrity and thier hard work. Anura Dissanayake has the charm and art of talking to the poor and middle calss alike. Probably the only politician who can talk facts with much humor. When he delivers a speach in the parliament no one dares to disturb him.
As the writer correctly mentioned there are only a handful of members such as AKD, Sumanthiran, RW, Karu J, in the parliament who got some qualities, knowledge and respect.
Congratulations to comrade Anura Kumara Dissanayake/JVP!

I think all fair minded people will join Prof. David in wishing Anura Kumara Dissanayake well. He has shown himself to be well prepared, thorough, capable and deserving of the position; AND he is young. He could be the leader to expunge the wrong turnings of the eighties and to make the party truly national and inclusive. The road will be long and winding; let us hope he gets the support he deserves.

JVP has to settle of accounts of History, that lost of one Hundred thousands youth in 1971 April and 1988/89 of our nation. What about accountability of JVP political CATASTROPHE in past 45 years since 1965?
Is Hon Anura Dissanayake MP-(master policyman) , going undertake responsibility and that give reply to Sri Lankan public, after he succeed by Dr Somawansa Amarsnighe outgoing Leader?
Sri Lankan Theoretical Professional elites are blind on ground reality of Political class bases and social forces. They unable realized which political class appear by JVP and dependency on which foreign powers?
JVP was political party shifting one position to other by the vested interest of WHICH RULING CLASS PARTIES IN POWER! AND SUPERPOWER IN GOLABL POWER!
The heinous act by past 45 years since 1965 in JVP past and present only aimed to undermine foundation of Sri Lanka democratic system.
And its party policies discredit the peoples democratic institutions of Sri Lanka.
It is party without principle-policies and integrity are lead to suspicion and party leaders in NOT firm commitments to ANY ISM.!
The party leaders are elected or Not, that leaders are from the very(Wijeweera) inception NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF MASSES.

It is too “early” to send congratulations to this newly elected leader of the JVP, because my assessment is always based on “performance” rather than getting “elected” to leadership. Anyway, I congratulate him being the first leader of the JVP to be in Parliament.

So far as I have seen, he has done well in Parliament compared to most or all of the other so called “leaders” in the Opposition. We have been deprived of a “charismatic” and a “vibrant” Leader of the Opposition for so many, many years and it is not a healthy sign to continue that way. Excepting perhaps for one or two the most, we do not see a single in the main Opposition Party (UNP) who could measure up to the expectations of the people. Also with the present trends in that party, we cannot see any “Leader” being emerging as that of the JVP. In that context, Mr.Ranil Wickramasinghe must emulate Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe sooner better than late. But I am doubtful, because he is “unable” or “disregard” to assess himself in the eye of the voter and mostly concerned of holding on to the “Leadership” position.

So let us be “hopeful” and wait to see how Mr. Anura Kurmara Dissanayake will measure up to the expectations of the public.

The JVP is a political party with radical views but not a Marxist party.Until 1980 it believed in internationalism but Rohana Wijeweera discarded it together with true marxists it had into the Indian Ocean and embraced nationalism as a short cut to power. Racists like Weerawansa and Champika Ranawaka would have never joined the JVP had it been a Marxist political party. The JVP was never able to reach the Tamils and Muslims and it will never be unless the JVP abandons its current stand on the National Question.
Until it decides to discard Wijeweeraism, the JVP cannot become a true Marxist party

I would call – the menioned WW, CR are not only racists but rabble rousers appointed by president himself to keep his reign. And WW has been suffering from huge inferiority complex not being able to get anything being passed by any non-sinhalese forms. As some psychoanalysts make clear, inferiority complex can make person so sick even turning him a amok runner. The popular wording that WW has been using were not considered as civilized spoken sinhala few years ago inthe country.

Wimalweerawanses´s slangs (Ai hathilawwe, hathwalame, hakke buduras bokkedadamas) sound as if came from rapper M&M or some popular rappers from Europe. Berlin´s rapper – tunisian origin rapper composes his own songs by using all kind socially cornered event, sometimes exageratingly going that far attacking even ruling politicians in green party froner runners. These compose outreach and polarise to young communities easily. But if sociologists, psychologists, other society experts are in the view these kind of songs can create dangerous society as no seen in the past. Due to the very reason, german parlliament decide sometimes against such rapper´s popular songs to be broadcasted or telecasted in German media.

Now turning to our country. Our politicians rather promote paranoid theories, hate speeches because of the myopia that is infected by leaders in power. To them, brand everyone who advocate their policies are NGO workers, dollar greedy agents, LTTE rump supporter, traitors etc.

Anura Kumara is the man who brought JVP in to the hell. This man drove JVP towards pro LTTE side and now became the leader after successfully removing Wimal from the party under the blessings from the western powers and Tamil separatists. What JVP has achieved so far after Wimal left the party? Nothing. they lost almost all the elections and lost the confidence of the people. We cannot expect nothing other than destruction for the party under the the new leadership who is directly responsible of the destruction of the party.

    “wishing the JVP all success”
Reading this line, I thought to myself I can’t just click on and move to another article without sharing my thoughts.

I for one, will never trust the JVP. Although they try to portray themselves as saviours to the nation. They certainly don’t smell like the attar of roses.

I rememeber 1989 in great detail. The deaths, the trauma. Our newborn daughter who needed specialised hospital care nearly died, when hospitals were ordered to be closed during the reign of terror. Her survival reinforced my belief in a loving God and the kindness of strangers.

Todate the JVP hasn’t uttered a single word of apology for that traumatic period !

I watched a video clip of Mr Dissanayake. It’s in typical mob orator style, just as they all were years ago. The JVP as I recall, preach frugality but practice luxury. When they exile themselves, they go and live in Western countries like U.K. not in North Korea or China or Russia.

I certainly wouldn’t wish them luck.

If they are serious about entering mainstream politics let them transform themselves and as a first step apologise for their past methods, brutal methods of attempting to wrest power.

Exposing the misdeeds of the ruling party and promising to empower the working class by any means is not sufficient and it will certainly not win me over.

I remember the past just too well.

I personally do not agree with the old JVP tactics resulted death and destruction to many lives in the past.Hope they have reflected and learnt from their past mistakes. After listening to few of his speeches it appears like he is one of the few guys who has some grey matter inside the skull. There is a huge vacuum in politics for sincere ,genuine and principled leadership.Hope and wish you are capable enough to fill at least part of that vacuum.Only time will tell that.

As AKD has correctly pointed out Anura Kumara is one of the few persons in the present parliament who prepares himself well and talks sense. In addition he is not your typical ranting and raving platform gasbags such as Wijeweera and Weerawansa.

Many people have even reluctantly (reluctantly, mainly because of the JVP’s barbaric Polpotistism of the 80s’) begun to look at the party as the only one which has principles and is capable of even remotely offering a relatively corruption free administration.

For the JVP to convert this intellectual interest into election winning votes, I believe several things are absolutely necessary.

1/ To honestly examine the party’s descent into the opportunistic and barbaric adventure of the 1980s, if this has not already been done, and to make a complete and public renunciation of this path.

2/ Jettison the rigid and outdated marxist-nationalistic claptrap theories of the cold war days and come out with a realistic socio-economic model, which gives place for private initiative and entrepreneurship which alone ensures economic growth as well as a workable model for fair distribution of the wealth thus created, something on the lines of the Scandinavian approach.

3/ Clearly spell out its stand on the Ethnic issue in terms of the maximum decentralization and sharing of power the party would consider offering to the North and East in particular.

4/ Ensure equal treatment for all under the Law

If Anura Kumar can persuade the JVP to offer a modern social-democratic vision to unite and develop the nation and to convince the vast majority of decent people in this country of their sincerity, then the party can look forward to a much brighter future.
