Appeal Court Judge Abrew Verbally Abused And Attacked Fellow Judges

Appeal Court Judge Sarath de Abrew caused havoc in Bangalore airport when he verbally abused his colleagues and even attacked one with a bottle of water, while returning home after a judges’ conference.

Sri Lankan newspaper Dailly Mirror reported the story without naming the judge as follows;

A Sri Lankan Appeal Court Judge allegedly caused havoc in an Indian airport when he verbally abused his colleagues and even attacked one with a bottle of water, while returning home after a judges’ conference. The incident was reported to the President, the Daily Mirror learns.

Creating a huge scene at the Business Lounge of the Bangalore and shocking many foreign onlookers the senior judge, had allegedly berated several judges in language that shocked the foreign passengers who heard his profanity. The individual who went on scolding his colleagues both in Sinhala and English for more than 10 minutes had later hit one of them with a water bottle.

The Daily Mirror reliably learns that the affected judge had made a complaint to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the appointing authority of judges through the Chief Justice and also to Chief Justice Mohan Pieris, Head of the Judiciary, and the other Supreme Court judges. The newspaper also came to know that the complaint had already reached the President.

The embarrassing incident had taken place when a ten-judge squad comprising Appeal Court Judges from Sri Lanka had participated at a conference held from April 17 to 24. On April 23 night, seven judges including the judge involved in the incident had been dropped of by the organisers at the Bangalore Airport while three others had taken different routes.

As soon as the bus reached the airport, the suspected judge had outrun the others to pick up a trolley but mistakenly left one of his bags behind. Being aware of the nature and temperament of the judge, the others had not touched or taken out the bag. Later, on realizing this he had gone off in verbally abusive parlance at the other judges which ended up in the bottle-attack.

However, it is learnt that none of the judges – including the victim of the bottle-attack – had retaliated in any manner. Yet, considering the massive damage caused to the reputation of the Sri Lankan judges and judiciary at an international public location, he had brought the incident to the President’s notice – By Susitha R. Fernando

Correction: The first version of this story mistakenly named the judge as Justice Sisira de Abrew when it should have been Sarath de Abrew. We apologise to Justice Sisira de Abrew unreservedly for the error.

This is not surprising at all. When the Judiciary is headed by a Cheap Justice who replaced the Chief Justice we expected this and more to happen. Further why should a judge report to the President about the incident and not to the Cheap Justice or even Minister of Justice? By the way where is the Cheap Justice, he is not seen anywhere? An acting Cheap Justice was appointed and what happened to the original Cheap Justice? Judiciary in Sri Lanka is going to dogs. I am even surprised that the international Judges forums even send invitation to Sri Lankan judges after condemning the action of the President on the sacking of the Chief Justice.

International Judiciary forum is another spineless organization. They can lot for International Judiciary. If they pass the motion will not accept the Sri lanka courts judgments. All over the game.

In a nutshell, there is no law and order in Sri Lanka…. Is this the kind of ‘justice’ he dishes out in his own court-room? The judge has brought disgrace for our country’s judiciary in a foreign land. Lets impeach the judge!

Probably he taught the forum.. Judgement Sl style….The airport will provide the CCTV footage if requested. Usually these My Lords go strictly by evidence. How can people repose confidence in his judgments….? How can a judge like him could have adorned a primary court leave aside the supreme court?

Disgrace !! ? Just wait and see, he shall be promoted to Supreme court. That is the order of the day. This is the kind of judges required to protect the monarch!! not the masses and may Justice R.I.P.

Sarath De Abrew is MR’s batch mate at Law College. There were many complaints against him and the then President of the Court of Appeal even asked him not to sit in court. MR was informed by the Judicial Service Commission but took no notice. He has a history of abuse- to his court arachchi, his former wife, domestic servants. He also had brushes with Mt. Lavinia Police.

Can anyone recommend a judge who does not sling bottles please! I am looking for a chap who is all of the following. An articulate and intellectual man who is very capable in leading others in business and life. A mentor or elder statesman. This man is a good politician as well as a good candidate for the priesthood. Possessing a Solomon-like wisdom and commanding authority. A man of high moral standards and principles. This is someone you can trust in all things. A rule follower. Committed to the greater good of all. I was thinking of GL Peiris :)

As in all professions its briefless lawyers who become judges in general or professors.
GL Pears is a down right opportunist like bLiar. One of your schoolmates who entered the Colombo campus might enlighten you. Lanaka is an amma nathan tatha governance so what more can you expect from a society where 90% of the population have an IQ below 60 while 90% of Caucasians have an IQ below 120.

Now, even the judges are thugs! Mother Lanka is weeping. What has happened to our once beautiful country with smiling people since “Mahinda Chinthanaya”. From Mahinda to Mervyn are all thugs, criminals, rapists, looters, extortionists, murderers, child molesters, fraudsters, human smugglers, drug dealers, etc. etc.

11 piti mutta coolies? When I was young I used to see people like this in Pitakotuwa. They wear a dirty blanket over their shoulders, and then wear a jute goni pandanguwa on their head and draped down their backside. The line up of these 11 only brings me those happy impressions of my excursions to the side streets (lanes) of Pitakotuwa where coolies used to manhandle heavy sacks of rice, flour, parippu and mungeta that were being offloaded from lorries into the grocers’ stock rooms. With people like Abrew, and politcial judges, what is the difference between gunny bag wearing coolies and our judges? They carry similiar burdens, and they are protecting their backsides!

I am a legal practitioner of the Court of Appeal. Your initial news report wherein it was mentioned that Appeal Court Judge Justice Sisira de Abrew was involved in the alleged incident was appalling and preposterous for the simple fact that at the time of the said incident Justice Sisira De Abrew was in Sri Lanka functioning in the capacity of Acting President of the Court of Appeal. Even though the said news report was subsequently edited I fervently hope that in future you would take steps to verify the authenticity of such reports prior to publishing such false news items against such an esteemed judge.

Oh what a shame, the country has gone to the dogs! A well respected nation and well respected people in the past who won international accolades and brought glory to the country. Now all we hear are bad things that tarnish and destroy the good image of the country. We are now called a country of uncivilized people because of the blunders of our political leadership. The people at grassroots level are really stupid and have no political wisdom to elect good people to power. Instead they have elected a bunch of thugs and hooligans and now we see the result. Everything has gone in the wrong direction and all we hear are wrongdoings, misrule, killings, rapes, thuggery, corruption, the law of the jungle, politicized judiciary, administrative blunders and generally mayhem everywhere. On top of these comes the news of a court of appeal judge bringing shame to Lanka by behaving like a bully in a foreign country. We are amazed that such people found their way into the judiciary. That’s the miracle of Sri Lanka, nothing else. Apata Wechcha Day

This News report is not clear.some times Little incidents we show as a big incident. According to the reports it is very natural even though he is a judges he is a human being. Some time he may behave over this particular occasion.Let disciplinary inquiry in to this matter will resolve this matter in future. when his bag left, other judges should informed then and their at that time. I believe all of them act like typical Sri Lankan idiots “Molgus” at this point. This is natural behavior from most of Sri Lankan at the Airports when they are going abroad..Why are we blaming to him and wasting our voluble time for this.

Sarath Abrew is obviously not suitable to be a judge. How about the rest of them , enjoying all the comforts that the government offers them ? Why do they copy judges in England and wear robes and wigs ?Is it to show they are like the best in the world ? Hardly!.The former CJ got a job for her husband from people who are interested parties.A lot of judger get benefits from infliential people including lawyers. I understand that the quality of our judgments is very low. They are never reported in internationaql law journals etc. Everything is very mediocre . But they get huge perks from government which wants to soften and corrupt these judges. We must sympathize with litigants and lawyers who have to appear before this type of justices.

I am a President’s Counsel of the Republic of Sri Lanka and a senior practitioner in the Court of Criminal Appeal. The original article alleged that Justice Sisira de Abrew was involved in an incident in Bangalore. At the time and date of the alleged incident Justice Sisira de Abrew was acting President of the Court of Appeal and he was in Colombo. He did not go to bangalore. You have tendered your unconditional apology to Justice Sisira de Abrew for your error. But unfortunately many other websites carry his name in their headers. It is your responsibility to have these headers removed or altered. Justice Sisira de Abrew is an eminent Judge of the Court of Appeal and he has been embarrassed and defamed by this. I urge you to take remedial steps immediately. Tirantha Walaliyadde, President’s Counsel. Tel 3144336
