Appeal Not To Cremate Muslim Coronavirus Dead. But To Allow Proper Religious Burial

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

The island’s Muslim community has appealed to the government to reconsider its decision to cremate Muslim corona virus dead but to allow burial according to their religious rites. Many pointed out that the living Muslims have their obligation towards the dead such as cleaning, clothing conducting special funeral prayer before the burial.

According to Daily Financial Times of March 26 the Muslim community along with all other communities fully supports the efforts made by the Government and public health professionals to combat this pandemic.

While acknowledging the much-needed steps taken by the Government, we are alarmed by the recent decision to cremate the bodies of the deceased due to COVID-19 mandatorily, fearing the spread of the virus and health hazard it may present.

The Islamic faith requires the deceased to be buried in accordance with religious guidelines and it is forbidden to cremate the deceased as long as there is no proven threat to the living.

In recent days we witnessed similar bill passed by British Parliament and after intense consultation and the demand by the Muslim and Jewish faith communities, the Government amended the bill to respect the religious beliefs and sensitivities by recognizing the importance of ensuring the faith communities are able to bury the deceased instead of cremating in the event of deaths due to COVID-19.

There is no scientific evidence of spread of disease after the body has been sealed in a body bag from respiratory or gastrointestinal fluids and therefore there is no difference in cremation or burial with regard to spreading of the virus. Countries like United Kingdom, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Iran and Italy too had permitted to bury the dead bodies of those infected with COVID-19.

Emphasizing the need for religious burial columnist Haaris Mhmud had this to state;

Sri Lanka has devised plans to cremate bodies so affected. It is a matter of regret that these plans have been taken without due consultation with the religious communities adversely affected by this ruling.

This largely affects and cause concern to the Muslim community which constitute 10% of the population. The basis of objection is religious and does not in any way reflect negatively on the preparedness of the Muslims to cooperate with the authorities by putting a cog in the wheel in the process of controlling the pandemic.

In fact, the Muslims have been cooperating with the government authorities fully. They even closed mosques, suspended Jumma weekly prayers and even the daily congregational prayers too. But, the subject of cremation is a very sensitive issue which cannot be considered as one which can be compromised or ignored as a first resort.

Relatives watching the funeral ceremony in Philippines.

For Muslims   cremation is forbidden. Funeral rites for followers of Islam are prescribed by divine law, and they must bury their dead as quickly as possible – preferably within a day of death. The body should be treated with equal respect in both life and death. Burning the dead is considered a form of mutilation, forbidden by Allah. The sanctity of the dead body and the importance of religious burial is therefore an integral component of religious practice for Muslims, as well as Jews as well.

Hence cremation is forbidden in Islam and Judaism. It is therefore insensitive for a government to impose a cremation upon the loved ones of these communities, thus adding further anguish and trauma to bereaved families, who themselves may be in self-isolation at the time of cremation. The body of a dead Muslim is as sacred as the body of a living Muslim. Handling should be gentle and respectful. To them, once the soul has gone and the body is dead, they still feel pained if it is not treated properly.

The Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) should respect the wishes of religious minorities in line with international and constitutional obligations that protects freedom of thought, belief and religion, and amend the proposed ruling to ensure no Muslim family is forced to undergo the trauma of seeing their loved one cremated.

There is a point of view emerging in Sri Lanka promoted by some hate groups, especially after the Easter Sunday that Muslims seems to enjoy special privileges in Sri Lanka, not afforded by the other communities. This is a warped view to say the least.  It is a right of any community to defend their cultural identity and rights; so are the Muslims.

Muslim corona dead were given the same funeral in several parts of the world. For example in Philippines the government gave Muslim coronavirus victims religious exemptions from cremation.

Dimapuno Datu Ramos Jr., chief of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, said the exemption was approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease in Manila.

The IATF agreed to put in place strict procedures to prevent the virus from spreading. The burial must also be done within 12 hours or half the period normally allowed in Islamic rites.”They must be placed in an airtight sealed cadaver bag and must be buried in the nearest Muslim cemetery within 12 hours in the presence of an imam wearing  personal protective equipment  for the brief Muslim burial rites,” Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año told  .

the government should consult its chief medical officer on this.If he says it is okay to bury then the muslims who die of coronavirus can be buried. This is not a state issue but a medical issue.Since no muslims have died due to this virus and may not die in the future,it is premature to discuss this now.The author is just jumping the gun as only 2 have died so far and they are sinhalese.

ps.as for me i feel i will die in a far off country in a remote place due to my penchant to travel and explore the world.I will tell the people around to just burn my body and throw it away anywhere they wish to without informing any next of kin or friends. As far as i am concerned it is just a carcass only, not worth bothering about. It is my soul that i want in pristine condition to go off to wherever god knows where it should go.My soul has to be cleaned up due to my sins.

A compromise solution is first burn the body to conform to health reason of eradicating virus from the body and then bury the remains. If the body is buried with virus still inside, the worms which feed on the buried body, when they come to the surface could be eaten by poultry and pass the virus to humans. There is a stupid suggestion that burning will pollute the air by releasing toxic gases. For the information of those idiots, from the time man invented fire, toxic gases has been released into the air. Cremation of infected dead body during pandemics of dangerous diseases is a scientific method. Those who want to be buried, please take the next flight to a Muslim country and die there.

        Lanka Perera,

“If the body is buried with virus still inside, the worms which feed on the buried body, when they come to the surface could be eaten by poultry and pass the virus to humans”

Viruses of corona family can’t survive for more than a few hours outside a host organism unless kept under carefully controlled conditions like labs. Asking again, god forbid, if number of cases go up like Italy, what we do? It can take 2 to 3 hours to burn a body.

It may take 2-3 hours to burn a body. Do you know, in most areas in this country, you hit the water table at less than eight feet? Any suggestions what to do?

          fathima

the host organism is the worm which could eat the body within a few hours.also as the worms will be underground when eating it they won’t be affected by the sunlight. What about the compromise?burn the body a bit,not to become ashes, but to kill only the germs. Then bury it.sounds okay to me.

ps.compromises are the best way of solving problems including our big one which is the animosity of majority vs minoriries.Unfortunately it is the hardliners in both camps who never allow a compromise and even kill the people who advocate such a course of action. That is why problems remain unsolved.

“burn the body a bit,not to become ashes, but to kill only the germs.”
It sounds like how to toast bread!
Why not suggest microwave to 90 deg C, as the germs can be deep inside. That will be less daft.

i know, but it is a compromise to keep the peace.Anyway it is lanka perera’s idea not mine.Burn the body for a few minutes.the sinhalese are happy but not totally happy, because the burning is only for 10 minutes. Then bury the body and the muslims are happy but not totally happy because it has been burned to a toast as another commentator says here.So both parties are not totally happy but are not totally unhappy either.that is what is called a compromise.

ps.main thing is by now the corpse does not care what is done to it.

Already two Muslim bodies were cremated forcefully in Sri Lanka against their relatives wishes. On Mar 31 & Apr 2.
And WHO clearly says that both burial & cremation allowed for COVID19 deaths.

This is absolute nonsense and is a Sharia View of this issue which this author any many like him have made into a racial and religious one! Nowhere does it say in the Koran what this man has interpreted like absolute fact. In fact Islam is a very flexible religion. It certainly does NOT advocate for religion to be above the State’s laws. That kind of wrongful interpretation is that of the extremist fundamentalist types like the Wahabbis, who are found in places like Saudi Arabia and also in the Eastern province that practice Sharia, which they insist is above the local law of the land! Prophet Muhammad has in fact gone on to advocate that a starving man on the verge of dying can even eat pork if he needs to survive! So I would like to call out this writer for the false narratives that he has put out here merely to get special privileges and to play on the emotions of Muslims in this country to create disharmony and religious tensions!

The virus is airborne delivered by droplets. Performing Muslim burial requires washing of the body by relatives. Washing – droplets – virus. And most Muslims don’t really like to follow rules set by governments. No other way but to keep it simple and cremate them all.

Hence cremation is forbidden in Islam and Judaism. It is therefore insensitive for a government to impose a cremation upon the loved ones of these communities

When religion and science are in conflict, science and common sense should always take precedence over religion and other beliefs. I’m sure Allah has common sense and compassion that he won’t hold it against any good Muslim or anyone else for that matter for cremating the body of a diseased to avoid risk of transmission. Its the stupid followers who bring shame to their own god.

There are many instances of government aggression and ignorance in this country particularly against minorities but this clearly is not one of those cases.

Also please remember there are lot of non-Muslims living in this country as well. While you are free to practice your religion in anyway you want, you have no right to put the lives of other people in danger especially those of us who are not Muslims while doing so. By taking the body of an infected person into the community for solely religious purposes you are doing exactly that. All freedoms have their limits.

    Simple questions
    ‘===============

    1) It has been widely accecpted that cremation pollute the Enviorment heavily .
    2) Waste of foreign exchange on fuel and an unneasry added burden on the already debt ridden country .
    3) Burials are more practical , The body decomposes extremely fast and leaves only the skeleton.
    4) Muslim burials do not even use coffins added benefit for the Enviorment .
In case of Corvid 19 deaths best to burry ( without washing but not using any disinfection as it might effect the natural decompossing process) bury the body with no coffin but rapped in a material that will seal the body well and will perish fast .
It will save the country from waste of foreign exchange and benefit the Enviorment .
Shun prejudice and please accept whatever is beneficial no matter from which religion it comes from

          in Anguththara Nikaya (https://tipitaka.fandom.com/wiki/AN3.The_Book_of_Threes-ver2) [3.2.3.10] / Chulanika Suththa, Buddha says;

“A thousand times the world in which the sun and moon revolve and light up the quarters with their brightness is called a thousandfold minor world system. In that thousandfold world system there are a thousand moons, a thousand suns, a thousand Sinerus kings of mountains… and a thousand four great oceans…
“a thousandfold world system” is something consists of thousand suns and worlds. We know that galaxies are consist of thousands of stars like our sun.
Even in the 500 BC, he knew about the galaxies! Not only that he said “the sun revolves around the thousandfold world system.” (Galaxy)
here’s a quote from an article from a site monitored by NASA. (https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/solar-system/sun/in-depth/)
“Sun orbits the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, bringing the planets, asteroids, comets and other objects along with it. Our solar system is moving with an average velocity of 450,000 miles per hour (720,000 kilometers per hour). But even at this speed, it takes us about 230 million years to make one complete orbit around the Milky Way.”
So if a person who lived 2500 years ago have acquired such an unbelievable astronomical knowledge, what do you think about it? Have you any doubt regarding “higher spiritual state and wisdom” attained by such a one?
And compare this with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s knowledge (https://sunnah.com/bukhari/59/10)

        • 0
          0

some information (including what I removed to ensure word count) in that quote from the Buddha is to indicate that there’re many planets like ours in a galaxy. Buddha may have just told that “there’re many planets like this” and to make it more understandable, those who wrote discourses may have added contemporary beliefs also. (It’s after about 500 years discourses of Buddha was written in books. Until then it came in oral tradition.)
It’s not my nature/desire to fight over religious beliefs. But since you’re trying to prove your religion using a very insensitive method, I think it’s my duty to challenge your superstition. That’s why above comment.
Muslim countries have low corona deaths because they’re not open to the world, tourists/others who come to these countries are very low, and Iran isn’t unIslamic country, and there’re many other countries not so affected by corona or have low deaths which aren’t Islamic. Our own country is an example. Sinhala-Buddhists have done may riots against Muslims, so why Allah (SWT) don’t kill them in thousands?
How can you compare deaths by an earthquake and an epidemic? The two calamities are very different. Earthquake will kill almost everyone in the area, while deaths by a virus depend on how many affected by it. Tibet is in an area which more earthquakes happen, and if such a earthquake happened in Saudi (this is impossible since it’s not in an area which plates are conflicting) then Muslims will die just like in Tibet.
(Why Allah SWT don’t make Muslim countries free of conflicts and extremism? Compare age expectancy, GDP, education etc of Muslim and European nations instead to know Allah SWT really love Muslims)
Why Allah don’t kill more from Myanmar? (only 3 now)

The burial or cremation of corona infected dead bodies must be purely based on hygienic reasons according to the international and local health regulations taking the general wellbeing of the entire population. Religious traditions and beliefs cannot override rules and regulations which are for the benefit of all. Not only Jews and Muslins but Catholics and Christians too traditionally bury their dead according to their beliefs. But they are not protesting considering the situation.. Why should only one group protest?

I am shocked to see this article. A small country like Lanka cannot afford to have special terms for the disposal of Covid 19 virus infected cadavers. In the process of handling the cadaver so many people can be infected and burial does not eliminate the virus, which stays in the ground and can re-infect people at a later stage. Regardless of faith, for the sake of the poor country and its people, the corpses of all dying from this virus MUST be incinerated and cremated. There should be absolutely no exceptions. Any other method of disposal must be treated as crimes against humanity and terrorism and should be treated that way. Meanwhile It is possible that Moslems who applauded the barbarians who blew themselves up last year around this time at Easter Sunday will now resort to infecting people with the virus. The government must use military force against the Moslems who resist cremations because these combative elements will obtain a fatwa and act like the Easter Sunday killers and try to kill Kaffirs by spreading the virus among them.

    Well, here we go again:

This is 2020 (not the year 500 AD)!

Disclaimer: I am from a large family with very close Muslim relatives and friends, including Jews. I am Roman Catholic.

    1. Burying the body means the COVID-19 can FREELY reproduce in the carcass (I am, NOT going to mince my words here). It CONTINUES to grow even after the victim is DEAD!
    2. It can/may then grow into a colony of super-viruses six feet below.
    3. When another person dies (a year later) and the same or an adjacent grave is dug up the virus can infect the diggers and become exposed to the air.
    4. Respectfully, please exhume the grave of a faithful who died about 3 or 4 months ago and you will see that the carcass is still there – in a not so pleasant state.

We know NOTHING about this virus, the best is to burn it and make sure it cannot morph into the DEVIL!

    Peace!

These selfish pricks could not care less if non-Muslims (aka infidels in their own terminology) lived or died. Whether there was a pandemic or not, their goal was always to reduce the headcount of non-muslims.

As a matter of fact, with this new Pandemic they must be secretively rejoicing everytime a non-Muslim succumbs to death. Otherwise, who on earth at such a catastrophic time would worry about what the hell Allah said more than listening to sound medical advice.

The author of this essay, being a Muslim (assumed from the name) should go to his community to campaign safe practices of communal behaviour. These inconsiderate buffoons have their conferences with Allah, and contract a disease everybody in the world is trying to control. I wish that they all went to Mecca instead of returning to SL after their conference. This has become a huge problem for India as we speak. Collective rights are more important at this juncture. The method the SL health department has adopted is the same as they use to control Ebola, then and now. We do not need conferences to decide what to do with dead Muslim bodies, especially of traitors. You may have a right to your opinion. It is best at this moment, to keep them to yourself. More you speak, more ‘Gnanasaras ‘ will be born.

Look at the third picture. The body was buried few yards away from the a home. People in the house too were watching the scene. In the South, neither Sinhalese nor Muslims wanted anything near their living places. In Negombo even Muslim didn’t wanted it to be buried anywhere near to their places, so they went and dug a hole at the beach, a very bad precedent. Muslim earlier don’t wanted to bury Zaharn’s body in their cemeteries, but forced to bury in Tamils’ living area though Tamils always cremate their bodies. Same way many Tamil places were selected for safe houses by Aanduwa to keep infected ones. After SLMC was created Muslim leaders and writers puff too much their religious balloon for Muslim votes. So Sinhalese got united and taught a lesson in the last election. If Muslim leaders and writer wants the body, they take it to their home and keep it there, but then live life long in self isolation. Otherwise they should live along with the world without keep inventing every day something new out of a 1500 years old unwritten manuscript and winding their population for nothing.

Yes, Sri Lanka knows MORE THAN WHO! The WHO/UN is a U.S. funded TERRORIST supporting organisation!

Yeah. the Sri Lankan authorities also KNOW more than those in the UK, Europe, US, Singapore, Australia and many other developed countries. No wonder, we are where we are, 72 years After independence.

I can also see that the LTTE diaspora is out in FULL SWING to capitalize on the situation. You failed on Easter Sunday now you are trying with COVID-19 to destabilize SL. You are playing a dangerous game!

I doubt the SL government is afraid or cares what terrorist/U.S. funded – CIA controlled organisations think!

SL does what is good dor SL!

Please read my comment above. It is NOT the washing that is the problem, the virus can/will CONTINUE to grow in the carcass six feet below (just like the Yeast can stay dormant for years, or some plants like Mukunuwenna can stay dormant for years, etc).

Then when a grave is dug out in the future that virus can start all over again, MUCH STRONGER!

Please try to understand. The WHO has other priorities… Sri Lanka has its own…

This is not racism, if at all is the MUSLIMS who are being RACIST!

Did I say that Washing is a problem?

For the rest of your Claims, please provide Reliable Sources, if you have any.

Muhandiram, Do you know that the WHO colluded with China to hide the coronavirus epidemic when it initially appeared in Wuhan? Sri Lankan government has decided to cremate its dead, which is the most suitable thing to do. If you don’t like this, please leave this country before you are dead.

“Do you know that the WHO colluded with China to hide the coronavirus epidemic when it initially appeared in Wuhan? “

Really? What is the source for this?

“If you don’t like this, please leave this country before you are dead.”

None of your business. I am born here. I will die here and be buried here. I was working in the Far East and the Middle East for more than 12 years and when my contract ended in the mid-eighties, I had the option of going to any country of my choice in the West to settle down. But I decided to return to Sri Lanka, my country. That was the time when the country was in the grip of JVP and LTTE Terror when almost all Sinhala Card board patriots like you were trying All possibilities to flee Sri Lanka. Almost all my friends, Sinhalese included, advised me against returning to Sri Lanka and called me a fool when I did return. They must have known about people like you. When I read comments from the likes of you, I do wonder whether I did the right thing by returning to Sri Lanka.

The religious leaders should agree on a scheme by which risk of infection is eliminated.
Crowding is a big issue. Touching the body is another.
Come up with some sensible proposals rather than simply protesting

These ignorant fools believing in Allah, seems to be hurting the country every year! If the learned in the Islamic community would not address the issue and teach them to be good citizens, all hell will break lose. At the moment they are trying to protect their ‘Rights’? What a joke. Simply follow what is happening in India as a result of these fools’ selfish acts believing in Allah. Allah would do you sweet bugger-all!

All Muslims and others live in Sri Lanka should know that the government has decided to cremate all Coronavirus infected dead bodies. If someone is not agreed to this, please leave our shores before you are dead.
