Arresting Salley And Duminda’s Ceremonial Welcome At The Presidential Palace

By Karu Jayasuriya

Karu Jayasuriya MP

It is in the strongest possible terms that the arrest of former UNP Deputy Mayor Azath Salley must be condemned by all right thinking peoples of this country. His arrest – for allegedly inciting communal hatred under the prevention of terrorism act, is further proof that the Government continues to retain these repressive war time laws to hunt political opponents in peace time.

Mr. Salley’s arrest must not come as a surprise to any observer who has been witnessing the dismal levels to which law enforcement in this country has descended. Mr. Salley’s offence has been to warn of the dire consequences this country could —face if hate campaigns against a single community continue to grow.

Mr. Salley should in fact be saluted for speaking out against hate groups targeting one community of people in this country, when the Government continues to watch from the sidelines as another conflict brews in our island. In terms of battling racial hatred and calling for unity in Sri Lanka, all of us stand beside Mr. Salley. Many of us would fight to the end to prevent Sri Lanka from taking another dangerous turn down the road to a repeat of a 1983 type conflagration. The crime Mr. Salley has purportedly committed by an increasingly tyrannical regime should be work like a badge of honour by all patriotic Sri Lankans who do not believe in ethnic or religious divisions or hatred.

The arrest of Mr. Salley for alleged statements to a newspaper comes at the same time when a politician who is accused of a quadruple murder including that of a ruling party leader was granted bail. Sri Lankans are intelligent enough to see not only the irony of these events but the sheer shamelessness and the disgusting impunity with which the current regime governs. An alleged murder suspect is given police protection and a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential palace soon after receiving bail while an activist calling for unity and warning against an impending division is arrested for being a terrorist.

With the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting due to be held in Sri lanka in November 2013 the world’s attention is drawn to our country. It is sad that our government continues to  demonstrate that it does not adhere to any Commonwealth values that prescribe good governance, freedom of expression, democracy and the rule of law. While Sri Lanka has lost its standing as a shining democracy this regime seems determined to further tarnish our country’s image as a lawless land where goons rule and injustice prevails.

I call upon all freedom loving Sri Lankans to recognize the grave injustices being carried out by the ruling regime. The intimidation of Mr. Azath Salley is not just aimed at an individual. It is aimed at an idea, an idea that all Sri Lankans can live as one, an idea that there will be justice in this land and above all an idea that Sri Lanka need not be consumed once again by the flames of hatred and war. It is an idea that is worth preserving and fighting for, even against the mightiest odds.

Azad Sally is a Muslim extremist and he can not recognize the fact that Buddhist allowed Muslims to establish and live while none of the mislim societies in the world allows other religions and oppresses other religions.

On the other hand, Duminda had different kinds of charges such as Rapes, and drug distributing and dealings. Yet he was supported by the powerful people of the govt AND when he was hospitalized( while he had murder-charges) He was looked after by the govt.

JimSofty, you are an idiot too and joins Karu who got less preferential votes than Paba in the largest populated Gampaha district in the last election of parliament.

You can’t say that all the Muslim countries are extremist countries. Muslim countries are Muslim countries as English and Christian countries. Christian countries do not allow Muslims to practice some of their acts in their countries either as so identified in their respective constitutions.

Asath Saly who is one of the western agent like MS and RW who are paid for implementing western plans locally has been arrested by SL law enforcing offices on legitimate complains and clear evidences in provocation of violent acts between Muslims and Buddhists using popular media.

On the other hand Duminda is yet a suspect only. He was supported by his rich family to get recover from his fatal injuries. It is the governments duty to protect and look after all equally either in health or in legal grounds and yet Duminda is an elected MP of parliament with vast people support.

Another pro-Rajapaksa fooltalking rubbish without knowing facts. Salley’s only accusation or crime was that he had spoken openly against the BBS in public. He was talking for his community againt the despot. Rajapksas are a bunch of luntics so those who support them are critically ill hate mongers.

“…Buddhists allowed Muslims to establish and live…..”
This is a positive event that took place in the history Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, a lot of Sri Lankan Buddhists relate this to mentally subjugate and feel indebted with their own very existence to the Buddhists. Ancient kings welcomed and asked Arab traders to settle down in Sri Lanka in exchange for their experience and expertise in various matters. Arab traders did not come to Sri Lanka as economic refugees or as conquerors. This is a timing issue. Sinhalese came first, Tamils came after (there are historical claims to the contrary) and the Muslims came last.

Muslims are the youngest sibling in the big, ancient Sri Lankan family. And, it is a shame, the way the eldest brother is treating their youngest sibling – the Muslims. Arab traders did not bring their wives during their trade missions. Therefore, they took Sinhalese women as wives. Sri Lankan Muslims have Sinhala blood.

“…..while none of the Muslim societies in the world allow other religions and oppress other religions.…”
Why not? Think about Malaysia. Chinese came there in the 15th century. Today the Chinese population is over 25%. Then about Indonesia and the Chinese population there is about 3%.

Sri Lankan Muslims cannot be held responsible if anything happen to followers of different faiths in other Muslim countries. Sri Lankan Muslims are unable to help their suffering co-religionists in other Muslim countries. Similarly, Sri Lankan Muslims cannot hold the Sinhala Buddhists responsible for atrocities committed against the Muslims in Myanmar or any other Buddhist country.

Why to see it in that way – not only sinhalese are srilankens but also muslims, tamils and other minorities. So, just being the predominant majority in the country, one cant say that sinhalese establish everything for them. That is their rights as SRILANKENS. This is common to us to while living in Europe. Though we the foreigners are minority – we enjoy the same rights as the indegenous people do.

I am glad you raised this concern about the asymmetry of law enforcement or rather partial abuse of law enforcement that will corner the country among civilized Nations. Please table a well articulated protest in the parliament so that it will be recorded on Hanzard archives for future generations to see if they ever wish to understand what caused the demise of Sri Lankan moral values. But I am appalled by the silence of your party leader Ranil Wickremasingha. Due to some reason, he consistently failed to make credible arguments in the parliament. Unlike good old days, we are watching what all politicians do in the parliament, where they put our intentions into action.

RW is more cunning than anybody. He knows very well that quickest way to send this regime home is leave it alone. They will do the damage themself

      • 0
        0

Yes but he also leaves the regime free to manipulate and hoodwink the masses. he odes not take up issues. RW’s personal likes and dislikes take first place. A good example is the impeachment. Because he does not like Shirani B he did not take up the issue. MR is a thousand times shrewd and can wriggle out of very bad situations. So Ranil’s “let MR hang himself” theory won’t work. RW thinks power will fall on to his lap and he has only to hold the sarong so that the mango will fall into it. That is not going to happen. RW must catalyse change. He must reach out to potential dissidents from the SLFP. How can he do that when he does not even speak to his own MPs? RW is modern in his thinking and has a broad outlook, I agree. But with a guy like MR, that itself is not enough.

        Newton,

We don’t need an opposition leader to passively watch present Govt crap. Just send a robot with a camcorder for that. There have been times when only about eight opposition members gave valuable resistance to nepotism and corruption. The manpower of the current opposition is more than enough to give a difficult time to the vicious moves of the Government. They don’t have to aim to defeat Government bills, but use their time to leave valuable records. At present, the only MP who comes with prepared arguments is MP Sumanthiran. Single ha deadly he gives sharp resistance in the way we aspire. Most UNP MPs are either interested in in-fighting or just waiting till some miracle happens. Or they will readily cross over if a sumptuous offer is made. We wish to see otherwise from a party like UNP. Honorable Karu Jayasuriya, please don’t take offense, but seriously think about a credible plan to be effective in the parliament as a team.

Problem with RW is similar to that of some members of the Govt. and opp. He does not remember what he gas spoken immediately after speaking. The records of the hansard will make a good reading if, his speeches are compiled.

The Hansard is full of recent report of such stupid protests the UNP made in parliament. Remember ‘Alimankad-Pamankada’, ‘Any bull can fight a war’, in support of ex CJ and, candle lighting for Electricity bill …..

Mean time your asking of them to protest against the legal proceedings of a country would put them nowhere but in the same pit again.

      Quoting from:

“Due to some reason, he consistently failed to make credible arguments in the parliament. Unlike good old days, we are watching what all politicians do in the parliament, where they put our intentions into action”

If anyone could find out these reasons, no doubt that can save the future of our people/country.

I strongly believe as you also say- in good old days, there wwere a majority of candidates to do their job properly putting the thoughts and minds of the people into action.

Mr. Karu Jayasooriya may be a good humanitarian. But, he is not a Leader and he does not understand even Sri Lankan issues.

for example, If Asad Sally is not an Muslim – Extremist, he should have talked against the Sinhala – buddhist who was punished because he practised while he was in Saudi Arabia.

Yet, Azad Sallly wants more muslims in in the regional and world minority of Sinhala Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

I question Mr. KAru Jayasooriya’s humanitarianism when he supports extremists.

Stupid, don’t write things which u do not know. Asad Sally raised his voice for the community he represents… U know what is meant by extremism.

It was the response to Extremism, negative attitude by BBS. Those who are w/ Govt kept silence and Asad Sally took the opportunity to speak and so that he hat get his vote later. That is reality….

Are you been to Saudi Arabia… U know the law in Saudi.. U know how all the sri Lankans are living in Saudi… How much doller they are sending to the Govt till…

Are u talking about the propaganda created ….that was a lie and drama

Wake up….WAKE UP…. leave your dirt behind…. stand up as a patriotic Sri Lankan who wants SL to prosper for tomorrow children.

He has been a hard critique but dont you guys feel that the questions he raises are almost the same that we discuss on CT almost following many articles today.

For many in SL, if they come forward for their issues – are extremists. But reality as it is – Gota is an extremist to his manner. He does not even care or respect the opinions of others. Alone the fact that the way they handle Duminda´s release and very many other issues that general public of this country have to stay puzzeled, have not been clarrified yet by none of the autohrities:neither Gota fraction or authorities from the department of Justice.

I feel just looking at all these – that Azath and his voice should be a must when representing his community. I listened to his questions lately, but his counterpart from BBS completely failed to leave any response to them.

Fyi I am born buddhist, but neither BBS supporter or MR supporter.

      • 0
        0

But I have my own questions why Azath also behaved as if he was blind at the time innocient muslim girl was to be beheaded by Saudi.
Why they the muslims did not pay due attention in saving her life, this they could have done if they were worked on that collectively.

I read somewhere, those who were sent to Middleeast for Rizzana´s process only enjoyed their tours.

Above all minster of Justice as a muslim had not reacted adequately. If anybody have any reliable reference to prove their wholehearted mediation in this regard please add references.

Jim,Karu undoubtedly is a leader unlike MARA&CO who are
followers of JRJ&RP.Can’t you see why war mentality of
this regime not allowed to die off and instead being
oxygenated? Not for clean Buddhism.Clean Sinhala buddhist
vote is the target at the cost of Muslims. That’s why power
greedy Muslim leaders don’t open their mouths and even if
      they did,it’s stinking.Don’t forget,the silence of vice
president RW reasonably has a good share of partnership.

We have heard this before but then other than a few Sinhalese of conscence and NGO’s the rest of the country considered it a Tamil issue. Today the same unethical and unlawful measures are used against anyone that dares to speak against the govt.

“JS Tissainayagam was arrested in 2008 and charged with inciting violence in articles for his magazine.

He was also accused of receiving funds from Tamil Tiger rebels. He has denied supporting violence.”

PTA is very restrictive any thing and everything could be a offense and people will have to live in the military state they helped to create.

Mr.Sumanthiran should take note and take all precautions, he could be a target as people even out side the Tamil community support him which wont be to the liking of Raja Inc.

Karu Jayasooriya at least spoken about this arrest under the old draconian law. Where is the Leader of the UNP, Ranil Wickramasingha who is caught between the devil Rajapaksa and KP. Creating Duminda as a hero and Sally as a terrorist is a GR drama. We all must wait and see who will be arrested under this Law next?

yep, pretty soon those who oppose anything what the current govt does will be arrested including the people who protest against a price hike in Electricity. Now the police as started performing the role of the Media by recording events and meetings to target people of “Interest…”

Don’t be surprised if BBS is soon unleashed on the roads again to bolster the issue. Muslims beware!!!

No matter that Azath Salley is a rascal with so many fraud allegations hanging over his head, it is obvious that the regime is selective in the application of the Rule of Law.

Although Azath Salley is only a minor thorn on the Regime’s side, the arrest is merely to set an example and warn other dissidents not to get too big for their boots.

Azath Salley is, of course, very small fish compared to Sarath Fonseka.

The message to dissidents: SHUT UP OR WE WILL LOCK YOU UP!

Dear K..J the lost boy of politics. Whay aren’t you, RW, MU, SP, JJ, LK, DJ, and rest of the guys who are in your folds not been arrested. Do you mean to say they are not oppornants of the Regime or MR? Well I am with you on voicing out on the release of the DS. Well you have to understand that he had his reasons to get in to the folds of MR to avoid his issues with law & order of the country similar to you had in a time to need to avvoid a case against you as per the cope report. DS has proved that judges are better doctors than real docs that we know working at hospitals. Bail is more powerful than any medicine DS has ever given. It can do miracals. However, AS is a racist and an A*** H*** and a half. He deserves where he has benn taken to. Unfortunately he has fallen sick and hospitalised like every other politician get arrested. Now no medicine but bail note will be his only micaculous medicine for cure. SF had to take the same bail medi for his cure too. He had to be taken to the hospital everyday to give a voice cut to media & now the man is well & doesn’t get in to critical conditions as he regularly used to get. You all are in the same stupid bunch & buddled up an thrown to the bermuda triangle. Anyother place would be too good. Now why don’t you campaigne to arrest all in BBS & Ravana Balaya under same PTA so you can fight for justice and against all means of rasism??? You are the main reason for UNP to be what is is today. You are also responsible for lawlessness of the country as you were part of who destryed the opposition. Now don’t try to act as a saint lost boy. You too are a disgrace to our country.

Why dont your party send Ranil to London, New York, Ottawa, and Brussels to complain? That is your UNP usual solution since JR Jayawardena’s time Isn’t it?

Thanks for bringing us to this position.

Rajapaksa goons don’t know who is good and bad. They don’t know the meaning of the good and the bad. What they understand is staying in power by any means and any how. That’s all matters to them, nothing else and want to enjoy it to the best. No people and no country matters, only their arrogance and ego matters to them. For all these ends, simply they are using every one and every thing.

Any one who wants human right and freedom wouldn’t submit to all these. They purse and persevere until they get it for all.

They couldn’t break him when Abe Lincoln was struggling to set the blacks from slavery. They couldn’t do it for Martin Luther King when he struggled against the segregation. White couldn’t do it for Nelson Mandela when he struggled against apartheid. British Empire couldn’t stop Gandhi from getting the Freedom for the Indians.

Gota, Mhahindha & Co are soon doom to fail and have to face the consequences of these injustices.

Minorities are targetted and arrested under the draconian PTA without any evidence whatsoever. On the other hand the thugs in yellow robes are allowed to defame and attack minorities untouched by the law. This is the state of human rights in this country.

Latest target is TNA MP Sritharan. The Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) has requested the TNA MP, S. Sritharan, to appear at the TID headquarters over the comments he has made to the press on alleged land acquisition in the Kilinochchi District. Apparently talking about the legal rights of minorities is taboo in this country.

Misuse of the PTA is rampant and is being used to suppress the media and harrass legitimate members of the opposition. High time the misuse of this draconian legislation is challenged in courts.

Karu Jayasuriya has spoken sense. If Sri Lanka to continue with this hate-programme country will be divided into three sooner than expected. When one looks into the integrety and/or otherwise of the present day politicians, one can without any hesitation come to the conclusion that Karu Jayasuriya is the only front-line politician who is acceptable to all the communities in the country. He is honest and his political integtrity is beyond reprehension. He is the only present-day politician who can redeem this country from anarchy.

I am happy that at least Mr. Karu Jayasuriya spoke on these issues. I do not know whether the Sinhala media would carry these news.
Azath Sally spoke against BBS and NEVER against the Sinhalese. I have listened to him in the TV interviews. BBS had carried anti Muslim campaign inciting communal hatred after we have had enough of the 30 year old war. All of us know BBS never gets pulled up by the ruling party and Ranil Wickramsinge. Has RW ever made a public speech against BBS. RW is deaf and dumb to Muslim issues
RW made a statement in the Parliament which was not given that publicity. He knows that. He was quite concerned about the attack on Udayan newspaper which I also condemn, but he never seem to be worried about the attack on Muslim establishments nor against incitement. If he had listened to the BBS speech in Kandy in March, it was obvious incitement.
During the Dambulla mosque issue, he never made a statement and he let the two Muslim MPs deal with it. So many incidents happened to the Muslims, but he kept quiet.
My guess is that he is sure of the Muslim votes so he is not bothered, but with all the problems Muslims should vote for MR, because majority of the Muslims did not vote for him that he does not care for the Muslims. Muslims must decide to vote for MR despite the short comings. Violence was started by the UNP, judges were stoned and workers were hit by cycle chains, corruption was rampant- remember the stories of Mr. 2 % and how JR pardoned the rapist Gonawela Sunil. These are forgotten tales of the UNP and when they talk like sudda vanthayas, they and the people must be reminded.

The Daily Mirror of Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th have published some photos of Duminda Silva supplied by the family to prove that he had been in fact subject to head surgery. Please note in the photo where the head is shaven fully, there is a circular cut mark at the back of his head. The other photo where the hair has slightly grown shows a cut over the skull from the front to the back, which is not present in the other photo of the circular cut. In this photo the circular cut at the back should also have been visible on the sides, but it is not there. I wonder from which Medical magazine they have picked these photos to prove what is not? Shaving the head and being bandaged, does not necessarily mean surgery has been performed. With digital technology surely they could have done a better job.

How the Rule of Law in action in the country under MR regime:

    a) Duminda Silva (DS) was to everyone´s eye the key candidate among to have murdered Baratha – Prima fasie evidence available though they did not consider them – now with growing speculations are there, DS was at all head injured and had been undergoing all the reported surgeries – TRUTH is to be revealed by INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS soon, people are PUZZELED – let waiting for the truth
Once a criminal should NOT be life long criminal, but THE CASE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED by responsible courts to a clean manner – IC is pointing their fingers at us – but MR and fully ignorant authorities stay calm and quiet L
    b) BBS leaders – for many they are an extremist group dressed in safron robes – funded believed to be by Norway, attack all innocent Muslims (SRILANKENS), GOTA and all other authorities are accountable to investigate, but not even the ones that vandalized pvt and public propered were investigated to a free and fair manner
If HALAL should be the real cause, why not responsible state authorities (e.g food and beverages dept or the like) just ignored it handing over it to the begotted mind sets (BBS).
    c) Muslim activists – former mayor candidate for CMBO has NOW been remanded – though his charges COULD BE not even 1% of what BBS perpetrated lately – but BBS is suported by all mighty GR with the same genetics but one of the most dangerous person that sinhalese community ever produced.
    d) CJ Dr. SB was dissmissed through an illegal process by night car race speed, not respecting the relevant provisions as given in the consitution – but to PURPOSEFULLY revenge her – and replacing the vacancy with one of his henchman (MOHAN PERIS)– with on going crime investigations against him. Ms Eknaligoda (wife of one of missing journalists) herself reiterate MOHAN PERIS not even suitable to be CJ, but who cares, it is the RULE of Rajapakse
    e) British tourist was murdered by a friend of the son of president – Prima fasie evidence available though the main candidate is now set to be free. Raped girl friend of the murdered british tourist spoke out lately – see how it would finds its end soon.

Opportunism play a major threat to rule of law in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately now muslims are victims of the opportunism game played by there political leaders. It is not secret that Muslims were armed by both UNP and SLFP governments during the past 30 years their war against North East Tamils. It is similar to that United States and its allies gave prohibited arms and chemical weapons to Sadam Hussain to use against Iran and its own kurdish people. The tactics used by MR and Ranil regime was to divide and rule policy which was successful. Muslims were used in most occasions to create divisions between Tamils and Muslims and between Karuna and Pirapakaran.
Buddhists clearly know these arms are still with those opportunistic muslim fundamentalists and it may be used against them.We all know MR gave a free hand to these muslim political leaders and these leaders cannot open their mouth because MR can arrest and charge them under the law (it is necessary and it is a waste paper for this regime)at any time.
It is time for muslim community and muslim civil organisations to think about how their leaders betrayed the trust you gave to them and you should punish them democratically.

I am not sure if the writer can afford to traverse a moral high ground, given that he is a politician in Sri Lanka. His call to arms sounds more like a rallying cry for support to elevate himself to a better career position. His statements will carry credibility only if he qualifies as a better person that his adversaries. Somehow, I am not convinced…

Draconian PTA law was not used when terror was unleashed by Duminda Silva in the triple murder incident in public ..instead he was protected, law was manipulated and finally granted ceremonial police and state patronage. When Mr. Salley was the only politician that spoke out when most have begun to behave like selfish scrotums.. PRA was used, CID and STF were unleashed, rights and personal freedoms infringed upon with impunity.. This country has been hijacked by power hungry thugs from an underclass as indicated in pattern both covert and overtly… The Gods save the tiny “miracle”, rascal island of S.E. Asia!

    Mr. Jayasuriya,
Aren’t you and your party responsible for the current situation in Sri Lanka? You all switched sides for your benefit and now the innocent public has to pay the consequences!
This is what happens when the Govt does not have a strong Opposition.

“In terms of battling racial hatred and calling for unity in Sri Lanka, all of us stand beside Mr. Salley. Many of us would fight to the end to prevent Sri Lanka from taking another dangerous turn down the road to a repeat of a 1983 type conflagration”
Like to see this happening in reality…
It might be possible if you guys let go off the Rajapaksa shawl you all cling to!
    Best of luck!

Is this the same Karu Jayasuriya who walked away from
the UNP as Deputy Leader with 17 others and joined
Mahinda Rajapaksa? Is this the same Karu Jayasuriya who
then dumped MR and returned to RW’s lap to again become
Deputy Leader? Is this the same KJ who stabbed his leader
Ranil Wickremesinghe (not my favourite) in the back?

What a relief, it is you Sir. You now have all the time to
hold weekly news conferences!! You say what you want no matter
whether it the policy of RW or the UNP. Issuing statements have
become even more common than you keep changing your clothes. What
is all this for? You want to become the Presidential candidate?

The BBS should take a close look at what he has said. He may
contradict it in the next statement he issues. For KJ there is
no other champion than Azad Sally, the leader of a three-wheeler
political party. Other than the driver and Sally himself, there
would be no other member. True, he should never have been tried
    under the PTA.

But KJ, you worked for a Government that used the PTA to the highest.
Now you have to sign a different tune. What a shame!!!

Very well Said Gonawala Sunil. Karu Aiya’s English
keeps changing every time he issues a statement. Why
is this? Are people with the government also drafting
    them every now and then?

The long jumper that he is, Karu Jayasuriya will never
again be the deputy leader of the UNP. At his age, he
now has to look for a politcal home for the aged.

On the other hand, there may not be a UNP either. Ranil
    would have seen to it.

It is wrong for Sunil and Tyson to run down
Karu Jayasuriya. Wait and see!! He will become
the leader of this country one day. I know it
and I can vouch for it. Long live Karu

Nobody can be a Leader unless Voicing people’s concerns when they are needed. Many times until now UNP was a silent Lamb doing nothing and I herd it was due to the Leader of the party who restricted other members from criticsing the Government.

I still wonder if the Parliament is a ONE BIB HOAX……A BUNCH OF CROOKS WHO HAVE SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES, PERKS AND RECOGNITION.

I saw only JVP fighting for Peoples rights from the inception….but not others.

Shouting among themselves “both Govt. and the opposition” in the parliament has not brought any results due to Govt. having two third majority.

IT IS TIME TO GET ONTO STREETS, VILLEGES, TRADE UNIONS AND ALL THE MASSES TO EDUCATE THEM ON WHERE THE COUNTRY IS HEADING.
